9.30.7 9月喜迎In 2018, in the lead-up to the release of Avengers: Infinity War, Rotten Tomatoes sat down for an extended interview with Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, in which he gave us a complete oral history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s first three phases. This week, as Marvel gets ready to release its first film into theaters in more than two years – the last being the Phase Three-capping Spider-Man: Far From Home – Feige again sat down with us for an exclusive extended chat, this time to reflect on the end of the Infinity Saga, the studio’s move into streaming limited series, and to preview some of the most anticipated titles coming up in a jam-packed Phase Four, from Chloé Zhao’s Eternals to Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.Recommended: Kevin Feige s Oral History of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Phases 1-3At lot had changed since we last spoke. For starters, the COVID-19 pandemic wreaked havoc on Marvel Studios’ release calendar (Black Widow was delayed more than a year) and its shooting schedule; production shutdowns meant that Falcon and the Winter Soldier, once slated to be the studio s first Disney+ series, ultimately had to follow WandaVision. Speaking of series: Disney launched its streaming service, Disney+, in November 2019, and with it came those two Marvel Studios series, plus Loki, currently airing, along with a dual same-day streaming/theatrical release of movies like Black Widow that will test the superhero giant’s box office might.(Photo by ©Marvel Studios)Then there was the corporate stand-off, in mid-2019, between Sony and Disney over deal terms related to their partnership on the Tom Holland Spider-Man movies, an impasse that threatened to pull Holland’s Peter Parker from the MCU together. We asked Feige about that period, one which he describes as “an emotional few months,” as well as other major moments for the studio over the last several years, including the recent acknowledgment that Loki Laufeyson is bisexual – and thus the first openly LGBTQ+ Marvel MCU character we’ve seen on screen – as well as the tragic death of Chadwick Boseman and what that means for the future of Black Panther.Plus, Feige gives us rare insights into what we can expect from Phase Four’s big newcomers, including Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Eternals. But, in this first part of our interview, he takes us up to Black Widow, beginning with a look back at a moment from Phase Three that still brings him chills – and one which gave millions of fans a sense of hope as the world was mired in lockdown. The Viral Clip of Audiences Reacting to Endgame “Took On New Meaning, Even For Me Personally, During Lockdown Last Year” Relatively early on in the pandemic, that clip from inside with audiences at Avengers: Endgame’s first theatrical run, went viral – with the people cheering for the on your left moment and when the portals opened up. It was wonderful because it reminded me of Endgame and the year before – I think I was in one of those theaters where somebody had recorded that – so that feeling was very special. But coming in the midst of this pandemic, when we had spent so much time in our homes, not surrounded by other people, it was a wonderful reminder of community and of a shared experience. We’ve all shared the pandemic experience apart, but that clip did take on, I think, new meaning, even for me personally, during the lockdown last year – not just a memory of the year before and the wonderful achievement that the Russo brothers and our entire cast and everybody at Marvel Studios pulled off with Endgame, but a promise of the future and of being in a theater again and having a shared experience like that someday in the future. I think it gave us hope. pic.twitter.com/gPn8pKchYs https://t.co/PPRp5G6CIA Chip Skylark (@mizzymicole) August 29, 2020“Seeing where people laugh or seeing where people get very quiet and still [in a theater], or where people cheer if we should be so lucky… there’s nothing better.” I’ve sat in theater a number of times with [Black Widow] – some pre-pandemic and some post, tomorrow being the first time that I ll be in a full theater watching the final version of the film with an audience. [Editor’s Note: Feige attended a fan screening in late June the day after this interview was conducted.] But every time we make a film, it is with the expectation of delivering on a promise of an experience, to be experienced together in a theater. And seeing where people laugh or seeing where people get very quiet and still, or where people cheer if we should be so lucky, in moments in the movie… We spend years and years trying to work up to those moments, and being in a theater and seeing it and seeing it happen, there s nothing better. Every decision we make is from the point of view of sitting in a crowded theater experiencing the story. (Photo by Marvel Studios/Disney+)“When Bob Iger told us his desire for us to produce shows for Disney+, it gave us a new avenue, frankly, to do something we hadn t been considering before: a deep dive on characters who deserve a deep dive but hadn t had the chance yet.” What you see now in Phase Four is still the combination of work of five or six years, in some cases. In the case of Shang-Chi, 10 or 15 years in the past – we have been working towards a Shang-Chi movie for many, many years; towards the Black Widow movie, as everybody knows, for many, many years. So those were always set as films. When Bob Iger told us about Disney+ and about his desire for us to produce shows for Disney+, it gave us a new avenue, frankly, to do something we hadn t been considering before, which was really doing a deep dive on characters who deserve a deep dive but hadn t had the chance yet. It took us four or five films to tell even a tiny story of Wanda Maximoff and The Vision.Same thing with Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes. It s a testament to those characters, and particularly to those actors, that the audience fell in love with them in what really amounted to a relatively short amount of screen time and a handful of films. But we knew they were being underutilized, both the characters and the actors, and we really wanted to have a showcase to show off how amazing those characters are and how amazing those actors are – and certainly Tom Hiddleston as Loki, as well. And also to do it in a new medium and do it in a way that couldn t be done in a feature film. (Photo by Marvel Studios/Disney+)“By the first few episodes of WandaVision, people are asking, ‘Where is Agnes going to show up again? What else is she going to do?’… Within the MCU, [Kathryn Hahn’s return]  can’t come soon enough.” We were all fans of [Kathryn Hahn] at Marvel Studios. And she had come in for a general meeting coincidentally right around the time we were trying to cast Agnes-slash-Agatha. It was one of those, Why didn t we think of this before? Louis D Esposito [co-president of Marvel Studios] actually sat down and had a general [meeting] with her. And it very quickly went from that: She s great. What could she do for us someday? Anyway, who s going to play Agatha? We really have to cast this part. Wait a second… It was honestly almost exactly like that.One of the great things in building the MCU is seeing audiences respond to characters that they were not expecting or that they were not asking for. I wouldn t say there was a huge contingency of people banging down the door for Agatha Harkness to appear in the MCU, but she s a great character portrayed by a great actress. And by the first few episodes people are asking, Where is she going to show up again? What else is she going to do? I think the same thing s happening right now with John Walker from The Falcon and Winter Soldier series and certainly with Mobius M. Mobius as portrayed by Owen Wilson in the Loki series. So, that is something that is so important to the MCU: including new characters. The comics are filled with many lifetimes of spectacular characters and when you find the best actors to portray them it can quickly go from an audience never hearing of a character to them upset with us that we haven t already announced their own standalone movie. And that makes us all very happy. Rotten Tomatoes: When will we see Agatha next? Someday. Someday soon. You will see Kathryn Hahn in Knives Out 2 next, then maybe an assortment of other things. But within the MCU, it can t come soon enough. Let s put it that way.(Photo by © Marvel Studios)“For Sam Wilson, wearing the red, white, and blue in America would be complex. That is what we were interested in exploring.” Of primary importance [with the creation of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier] was allowing Anthony Mackie to show the full range of what Anthony Mackie can do. Such an amazing, amazing actor, and same thing with Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes. But when old man Steve Rogers handed the shield to Sam Wilson at the end of Endgame, you could see a complexity in Anthony s performance there. Old man Cap says, How s it feel? And Sam says, Like it belongs to somebody else. And old man Steve says, It doesn t. It s yours. It wouldn t be that simple. It wouldn t be that simple for anyone to step into those shoes that Steve Rogers had worn, but particularly for Sam Wilson, wearing the red, white, and blue in America would be complex. That is what we were interested in exploring. That s what Anthony was interested in exploring – our fellow producers, Zoie Nagelhout and Nate Moore. And thankfully when Malcolm Spellman, our head writer, came on, is really when all of that it turned into the series that you saw.It is a series that he had written with his writing staff before the pandemic. We d started shooting that before lockdown. So [that was] in 2019. Some people have asked, Were you surprised that it become even more relevant after 2020? What we d gone through? And what Malcolm says is, Well it was relevant in 2019 as well, it s been relevant for 100s of years, which is exactly correct. Figuring out a way to both wear the red, white, and blue with pride, and acknowledge the past at the same time, seemed like an interesting needle to thread and one that we needed filmmaker like Kari Skogland and writer like Malcolm Spellman and his team to pull off. That thread will certainly continue into the future [in Captain America 4]. Yes, with our new Captain America. (Photo by © Marvel Studios)The Loki Team has taken “the TVA conceit that we ve loved so much and turned it into an entirely different way of looking at the MCU and looking at the timeline of the MCU.” I think everything we do, I hope, are building blocks towards the bigger MCU while actually just being entertaining pieces of art in and of themselves. The Loki series explores an organization from the comics that we ve been obsessed with for years at Marvel Studios called the Time Variance Authority. And honestly, 15, 20 years ago [we were] going, This is a great idea. I wonder if we could ever do something with this… Honestly, [we were] thinking it was a pipe dream that would never come to fruition. (But Avengers was a pipe dream 20 years ago.) And now that we have this series, our producer Kevin Wright and our director Kate Herron and our head writer Michael Waldron and executive producer Stephen Broussard have taken the TVA conceit that we ve loved so much and turned it into an entirely different way of looking at the MCU and looking at the timeline of the MCU.And yes, the potential of alternate realities that we ve heard whispers of from the Ancient One and from other characters in a few of our movies [is there], but [we re] actually being able to explore it and try to understand it in, again, a rather subversive way – in a very bureaucratic organization that may or may not be telling the truth about the way things work. (Photo by Marvel Studios)“Tom can take that enthusiasm with his immense amount of talent and really rally a crew behind him as well, which is what he did on that show.” Tom [Hiddleston] is as great an actor as they come. He s as charismatic a person as there is, but he also honestly loves that he s been given this chance, from the moment we hired him with Ken Branagh on the first Thor film to the response that episode three [of Loki] got the other week when it debuted on Disney+. Tom is just as enthusiastic from that first call to each episode of Loki coming out. And that is so important. I think all of us at Marvel Studios try to maintain that enthusiasm and acknowledgement and humility of how lucky we are to be in this position. Tom can take that with his immense amount of talent and really rally a crew behind him as well, which is what he did on that show.One of the other things that s personally so exciting about continuing a franchise for this long is getting to evolve your relationship with the cast. Tom started as an actor that Ken Branagh knew who – as people may know – famously auditioned not for Loki, but for Thor, and then felt very thankful to get this job as Loki. I now find myself thankful that he said yes and that he is an executive producer on this Loki series and is helping us make the series what it is. Relationships evolving over the years is one of the other great pleasures of working with spectacular talents like that. All Rights Reserved.)On Loki’s Bisexuality: “Representation is important across the board and the comics chart the path.” Representation is important across the board, and the comics charts the path in almost all ways for what we do in the MCU. And in the comics there are many LGBTQ characters and we want to showcase that on the screen as well. We want to bring those characters to life on the screen. As Stan Lee used to say, Marvel represents the world outside your window. And outside of our window there are all different types of people in all different types of places with all different types of preferences and we want that reflected in the MCU and in our fictional world as it is in our real world. So it is of utmost importance that when people go in and see one of our films, or log on to Disney+ and watch one of our series, that it represents the true world outside their window when it comes to the types of people portraying the heroes and the characters in our world. (Photo by Marvel Studios)“That Scarlett chooses to continue to work and to bring Natasha Romanoff to life is a testament to the character of Natasha and how rich she is in the comics and how much more there was to explore.” Scarlett Johansson is just the perfect representation of an amazing actor lending their talents to our stories for a decade. That is an amazing privilege to have and one that we don t ever take for granted. She was nominated for two Academy Awards in one year, a few years ago! She is spectacular and could do whatever she wants. That she chooses to continue to work and to bring Natasha Romanoff to life is a testament, I think, to the character of Natasha and how rich she is in the comics and how much more there was to explore – and a testament to Scarlett, who likes bringing these complex characters to life. It really is a perfect representation of when you find a perfect actor willing to dedicate their talents to an amazing character from publishing that you can go 10 years on and be on the verge of their first standalone movie – and thankfully our first movie in a theater in almost two years. I just can t wait for people to see in a theater, or on Disney+ if they want. But to get out there and see what Scarlett and the entire team has done. Soon after we cast [Florence], I think she was nominated for Little Women, which was amazing. And again, like Scarlett, being able to traverse these worlds of classic literature like Little Women and moving over to what we consider also classic literature of the Marvel comics – and do both with equal import and with equal pouring of their heart and soul into it, which everybody, all of our filmmakers and writers and the entire team at Marvel Studios do. Florence did that tremendously well.The very first question that often comes out of people seeing Black Widow for the first time is when will Florence Pugh show up again in the MCU? And my answer to that is always “not soon enough,” because she s amazing. It’s another testament to Scarlett – who knew exactly the movie that we were making, who was a part of the development of the movie – [that she chose to] make that film an ensemble and to surround herself with new characters portrayed by new actors entering the MCU and allowing them all to shine, knowing that lifting them up lifts up the whole movie, which is what a smart producer does – which Scarlett is. So every compliment that Florence or David [Harbour] or Rachel [Weisz] or O-T [Fagbenle] get on a movie, I also turn back to Scarlett for being so smart to allow the film to be a showcase for multiple characters, which is what the best of our films can do. The writers won’t work in the same physical space, the series director, Digeo Velasco (Cybergeddon), will direct episodes from his home, and even the showrunner, Kidding’s Graham, will oversee the entire production from home, as the cast members film their performances from their quarantine locations. Disney s first-ever theatrically released princess-movie sequel, Frozen II, is set to light up the box office ahead of the holidays when it hits theaters November 22. Ahead of the movie s release, Rotten Tomatoes correspondent Naz Perez sat down with the key returning cast (Kristen Bell, Idina Menzel, Josh Gad, Jonathan Groff) as well as some newcomers to Arendelle (Sterling K. Ironheart does not yet have a Disney+ release date, but given how many shows are already filming before Ironheart, it probably won t be until 2023 or so. As it turns out, however, we won t have to wait that long to see the character make her debut, as Thorne will first portray Ironheart in next summer s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (7/8/2022). It s unclear how Ironheart will tie into Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, except one possibility is that in the comics, some young engineers have gone to Wakanda to continue their studies, which seems like a logical way to introduce Riri Williams, aka Ironheart, a 15-year-old M.I.T. student and engineering genius.Other Top Headlines1. ANTHONY MACKIE HAS OFFICIALLY SIGNED FOR CAPTAIN AMERICA 4 (Photo by Marvel Studios)Sometimes, the big news of the week isn t particularly news to anyone paying attention. For example, the Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier ended with Anthony Mackie s Falcon character officially taking on the role of Captain America, after a fair number of twists and turns along the way. So it was immediately obvious that Marvel and Disney planned on casting Mackie as the new Captain America in future projects, including Captain America 4, which the series showrunner was confirmed to be writing in April. Even so, Mackie wasn t officially signed to star in the hypothetical Captain America 4 until this week, but the deal is now signed. We still don t know when Captain America 4 might be released (except it likely will not be before 2024, because both 2022 and 2023 are already pretty well scheduled), or what it might specifically be about.2. SCARLETT JOHANSSON LEADS EPIC A-LIST ADDITIONS TO WES ANDERSON S NEXT FILM(Photo by Amy Sussman/Getty Images)Wes Anderson is well-known for his star-studded ensemble comedies, such as this year s The French Dispatch, and his next film, which is currently filming in Spain, seems like more of the same. Just last week, Margot Robbie signed on for Anderson s new project, and Jason Schwartzman and Rupert Friend joined soon after. This week gave us two similar casting announcements, starting with Scarlett Johansson, who was then followed by Bryan Cranston, Hope Davis, Liev Schreiber, and Jeffrey Wright. Other previously announced stars include Adrien Brody, Tom Hanks, and Tilda Swinton. One interesting thing about Johansson signing on is that Wes Anderson s films are usually distributed by Searchlight Pictures, which, as of 2019, is a subsidiary of Walt Disney Pictures, with whom Johansson is currently in the midst of a lawsuit over Black Widow profit participation.3. DENIS VILLENEUVE CONFIRMS ZENDAYA WILL BE PROTAGONIST IN DUNE SEQUEL (Photo by Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures)When David Lynch directed the first film adaptation of Dune (Rotten at 50%) in 1984, there were edits that were over three hours long, and the director s cut of the 2000 TV mini-series was almost five hours long. The reason is that Frank Herbert s original novel (and its sequels) is particularly dense, with dozens of characters and any number of related subplots. Director Denis Villeneuve (Arrival, Blade Runner 2049) apparently knew this would be an issue all along, because the Dune movie we re getting this year only adapts half the novel. Villeneuve confirmed this week that he is currently writing the sequel (if Warner Bros. decides to greenlight it), and that the running time will be 155 minutes. Villeneuve also clarified that the protagonist role in the Dune sequel will shift from Timothée Chalamet s Paul Atreides to Zendaya s Fremen character Chani. Dune is currently scheduled for release on October 9, 2021, pushed back from its original December, 2020 release because of the COVID-19 pandemic.4. EMMA STONE IS INDEED SIGNING ON FOR DISNEY s CRUELLA SEQUEL (Photo by Laurie Sparham/©Disney+)Following the news of Scarlett Johansson s lawsuit against Disney over her Black Widow compensation, there was some speculation that other recent Disney stars like Emma Stone (Cruella, Certified Fresh at 75%) might follow suit. That is now extremely unlikely to happen, as Stone has officially closed a deal with Disney to star in a Cruella sequel. Although many details of the deal haven t been disclosed (which isn t unusual at all), Stone is expected to be earning a sum in the low eight figures, which is more than the million she earned for Cruella. It s also unclear how profit participation (a key dispute in the Black Widow lawsuit) and streaming figure into Stone s new deal. The Cruella sequel will be directed by Craig Gillespie from a screenplay by Tony McNamara, both of whom also worked on the first Cruella.5. RYAN REYNOLDS SAYS DISNEY ALREADY WANTS A FREE GUY SEQUEL (Photo by ©20th Century Studios)Whether blamed on the Delta variant or on streaming options, the movies of the summer of 2021 have regularly opened to disappointing box office. One of the exceptions to this trend was last week s Free Guy (Certified Fresh at 82%), which exceeded predictions of a - million domestic opening with a haul in the million range. Ryan Reynolds took to his Twitter account on Saturday, the day after Free Guy opened, to post that Disney confirmed today they officially want a sequel. Woo hoo!! #irony. It s worth mentioning that Free Guy actually didn t get its start as a Disney movie, as it was one of the final productions of the former 21st Century Fox before Disney acquired Fox in 2019 (which is why Free Guy isn t on Disney+ yet).6. JOHN M. CHU IS PLANNING THE GREAT CHINESE ART HEIST (Photo by Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection)Crazy Rich Asians director Jon M. Chu, whose latest film was the big-screen adaptation of Lin-Manuel Miranda s Broadway musical In the Heights (Certified Fresh at 95%), has a very busy slate of upcoming projects in development, including the two planned Crazy Rich Asians sequels, the Wicked movie, and Disney s live action Lilo Stitch remake. Chu added another project to his schedule this week, as he is attached to direct an adaptation of the 2018 GQ article The Great Chinese Art Heist (which you can read right here), about how great works of Chinese art kept getting stolen from museums around the world. Silicon Valley co-star Jimmy O. Yang will co-write and co-produce along with his Crab Club production company partners.7. BIOPIC OF STAR TREK CREATOR GENE RODDENBERRY IN THE WORKS (Photo by ©Paramount courtesy Everett Collection)Nicole Kidman, Javier Bardem, and director Aaron Sorkin recently wrapped production on the Amazon Studios biopic Being the Ricardos, about the lives of Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, and one has to imagine that the film will address their contribution to science fiction as the co-producers of the original Star Trek. If that whets audiences appetites for more back story about the creation of the seminal television series, then the newly announced Gene Roddenberry biopic should go a long way to filling in those details. The film was announced on August 19, 2021, which would have been Gene Roddenberry s 100th birthday. The as-yet-untitled biopic already has a screenplay by Adam Mazer, who wrote the Jack Kevorkian movie You Don t Know Jack (Certified Fresh at 83%) and co-wrote the espionage drama Breach (Certified Fresh at 84%).8. ANIME HIT MY HERO ACADEMIA GETTING LIVE-ACTION HOLLYWOOD REMAKE (Photo by ©FUNimation)My Hero Academia, a Japanese superhero franchise set in a reality where most people have superpowers, got its start as a manga series in 2014 that was then adapted as an anime series starting in 2016  in the US, you can catch it on Adult Swim. Legendary Entertainment, which is the same company that gave us both Pacific Rim and the recent Godzilla franchise, is now developing an English-language live-action My Hero Academia feature film, and the directing job is going to Japan s Shinsuke Sato, who also adapted the manga-based movies Bleach (Fresh at 71%) and Inuyashiki (Fresh at 100%). My Hero Academia will also be Shinsuke Sato s first English-language feature film.9. THE FAST AND FURIOUS FAMILY WILL RETURN FOR #10 IN 2023 (Photo by Universal Pictures)Not counting any future spinoffs that might still happen someday, the main Fast and Furious franchise is set to have just two more movies, and now we have an idea about when the penultimate movie will come out. Fast and Furious 10 will start filming in January, 2022 for a release on April 7, 2023. There is no release date for the final film, Fast and Furious 11, yet, but it will be filmed back-to-back with F10, so a release date in 2023 is probably most likely. Franchise mainstays like Vin Diesel, Jordana Brewster, Ludacris, and Michelle Rodriguez are all expected to return for the last two films, but it s not yet known if more recent additions like John Cena and Charlize Theron will also return. Other movies currently scheduled for around the same time include Dungeons Dragons (3/3/2023) (which recently wrapped filming), the prequel Wonka (3/17/2023) starring Timothée Chalamet, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (5/5/2023).On an Apple device? This week, that certain kind of moviegoer is in for a treat. In Dream Horse, the feel-good Welsh film that critics say has arrived in theaters – after delays due to COVID-19 – at just the right time for a country in need of some serious uplift, Collette plays real-life small-town hero Jan Vokes, a working-class woman who wakes up one day with a singular ambition: to breed a champion race horse. The film, whose story was told in the 2015 Certified Fresh documentary Dark Horse, follows Vokes as she rallies a disparate group of locals – among them Damian Lewis s initially skeptical local accountant, Howard Davies – to put some money together and make that dream come true.For Collette, who recently wrapped on Guillermo del Toro s upcoming Nightmare Alley and is currently shooting Netflix drama Pieces of Her in Sydney, Australia, it s another critically acclaimed performance as a woman whose circumstances are humble but who should not be underestimated, a trait she says she s been attracted to from the time of her breakout film role as Mariel/Muriel Heslop in Australian comedy classic, Muriel s Wedding. In Vokes, Collette says she found someone to whom she could relate: I am a sucker for an underdog story, Collette says. Feeling out of place, but having a certain amount of faith in oneself, just having this gut feeling of, I have to pursue this. There s no real clear reason why, except that I m backing myself here and I feel it and I have to do it.' Ahead of the movie s release, Collette spoke with Rotten Tomatoes about the pressure to get one of Wales most beloved (true) fairy tales just right, forming a tight bond with her cast and a horse named Bo, and why she can t wait to see what the singular Del Toro has done with the highly anticipated Nightmare Alley.(Photo by Kerry Brown / © Bleecker Street Media / Courtesy Everett Collection)Joel Meares for Rotten Tomatoes: Congratulations on the film – and on mastering the Welsh accent. The whole time I was watching I was thinking, this must have been work! What was your approach to nailing the notoriously difficult accent?Toni Collette: Panic, initially. I mean, it s a very intimidating collection of sounds, and I wasn t very familiar with it. And not only is the Welsh accent on the whole a little scary from the outset, but then this is a very specific area called The Valleys. Thankfully, I had an incredible dialect coach who helped me – she s from there, and it was very, very specific. I can t tell you how helpful she was. Also, just being there and the cast and the crew were the most beautiful group of people, so supportive. So, the familiarity of the accent, it became more and more of something that didn t seem so scary and far away to reach, but I was very intimidated by it. At the beginning, I was like, I ve got to get out of this job. I won t only embarrass myself, but I will let down this entire nation, because this is a true story and I cannot screw it up! Rotten Tomatoes: I mean, it feels like the most Welsh movie ever made and you re at the center of it doing this accent, and look, to my ears – and I m not steeped in the language – it sounded great! The other thing I kept thinking is, the movie is such a feel-good film, and people are saying it s such a treat that it s coming out at this point in time, because we re in need of this kind of film. It actually wasn t supposed to be out right now, but do you think the timing adds something to the movie?Collette: It couldn t be better time. It could not be more perfect. I think the fact that people are able to go and have a communal experience of sitting in the dark together and watching a story unfold and getting emotionally involved is such a special treat. I think all the things we took for granted are now seen so differently. So, to be able to go and do that for a start is amazing, but to be able to watch something as special as this, that is so full of joy, so uplifting, so inspirational and all about hope and realizing your dreams it just couldn t be better.Rotten Tomatoes: The movie is about a woman who wakes up one day with a dream and acts on it. And when I was watching your character Jan, a lot of the time I was thinking abut Muriel [Collette s character in her breakout, Muriel s Wedding]. They re these two women from small communities who have a dream, right? But, Muriel s dream is to run away and get out and Jan s is to pursue her dream within her community and lift up the community as well. Did you see any parallels between these two characters – both chasing dreams, in different ways, at different points of their life?Collette: Absolutely. I think I am a sucker for an underdog story. I just am. And I grew up in Blacktown [a suburb in western Sydney]; I had very humble beginnings and I had this dream of acting, which seemed so distant and unachievable. I very much relate to feeling out of place, but having a certain amount of faith in oneself, just having this gut feeling of, I have to pursue this. There s no real clear reason why, except that I m backing myself here and I feel it and I have to do it – and to succeed is an incredible thing. But really, what I m inspired by in Jan Vokes is that she s so determined and so full of love and passion, and simply looking for some purpose, some meaning in her life. Really, there s that line: I just want something to look forward to when I wake up in the morning – it s such a simple dream. And to be honest, I don t think she really thinks about uplifting the community. I think it s a by-product of her own [dream]. I think that s that thing of, if you live your truth, you can only have a positive knock-on effect and I think that s what happens in this scenario.(Photo by ©Sony Pictures Classics/courtesy Everett Collection)Rotten Tomatoes: Jan (above, from the documentary Dark Horse) is obviously an incredible and inspiring person. To what capacity did you work with her or get to know her in the process of making the film?Collette: I didn t meet her until she visited the set a few weeks into filming actually. I d been living, obviously, with the script and everyone s stories about spending time with her and the documentary that had previously been somewhat successful at Sundance as well. I was kind of steeped in her world, but I didn t really communicate with her directly. When I heard she was coming to set, I was really nervous. I mean, as I said, it s a real responsibility playing someone who exists, but then she s right there. It s like meeting Santa Claus or something, it s quite jarring, but also very exciting. Kind of want to pee your pants and cuddle them and you don t know them at all. And it was a bit stiff and shy and it was a little disjointed, but I just love that there s this normal woman who pursued her dream and now there s a movie made about her. That in itself is an incredible thing. That just blows me away.They all visited the set a couple of times and then obviously at the end of the film they appear, which I think is so great. It s so important for people to see them and it s done in the most fun Welsh way. I mean, they can t stop singing. That s their culture. They will sing at the drop of a hat about anything.(Photo by © Bleecker Street)Rotten Tomatoes: [Laughing] I admit I was watching the movie and thinking, They re going to sing Delilah at some point –  it s going to happen. It has to, it s Wales! And then it does.Collette: Oh yeah baby. And there were songs that we, all the actors, just ad-libbed, that we kind of made up as we went along, which ended up on screen. But not only that, the composer then used what we had made up on the spot and started to compose from that. So, some of the score is actually inspired by us just mucking around on set. I love the organic nature of how that came to be.Rotten Tomatoes: Sounds like a fun shoot, with great people. Director Euros Lyn has said that you formed a particularly close bond with one of your co-stars: Bo, one of the horses who plays Dream. Tell us about that bond.Collette: Well, look, I m not a particularly horsey person. I have had some mind-blowing almost spiritual experiences with horses, but I m not around them often. And yes, there were several horses playing Dream. There were some that did a lot of the running racing, and then Bo was the acting horse. All of my scenes were with Bo, and they were emotionally intimate and I feel so lucky to have had an experience working with a creature like this, because there s no crazy judgment and the mind going round circuitously trying to make sense of things. The horse is just there. The horse is just present and listening, and it s all just energy between us and it was really profound. I loved him and I even looked into flying him back to Sydney. It was highfalutin, it was never going to happen, but I just felt so connected to this horse, and it wasn t just in my mind because the crew could see it. Everyone s like, Oh my God, this is incredible to capture this on film, but they are beautiful, sensitive, perceptive creatures, and it was pretty spesh. It s a beautiful side of this sport. But watching the movie I couldn t help also thinking about some of the conversations around horse-racing, and controversies, which have particularly come up in Australia in the last couple of years every November [the month of nation-stopping horse race the Melbourne Cup] – the debate around how dangerous racing can be for the animals. These owners clearly were incredibly careful and caring about the wellbeing of Dream, but there is another side. Was that conversation ever something that you thought about or was in the back of your mind as you got to know this world?Collette: Absolutely, yeah. I really don t know much about horse racing. Like Jan, it was a real education for me. I think the focus of the story is her relationship with Dream and what it does for herself and her community. Dream is almost like a third child to her. She s so protective of his wellbeing and his health. And it s torture actually for her to watch him do what he is actually very good at. They talk about him being born to do that and she did do that, she did state, I m going to breed a race horse. But she falls so heavily in love with this beautiful animal and they have such a bond that it becomes quite upsetting for her. She can barely watch. I think she feels Look, I don t want to put words in her mouth, but she can t go and visit him [today]. He has a great life. He s out to pasture, he s got beautiful carers and she can t visit him. She can t face it.(Photo by Kerry Hayes/Universal Pictures)Rotten Tomatoes: The last time we spoke was for I m Thinking of Ending Things, and I d asked about shooting Guillermo del Toro s Nightmare Alley, and at that time everything was on pause and you hadn t had a chance to do it. And now it’s done. Collette: Done baby, yeah!Rotten Tomatoes: First of all, how was it doing a production with COVID-safe protocols? And then secondly, what can we expect from your character Zeena and this film?Collette: Well, it was an amazing experience. Guillermo Del Toro is an incredible human being. There is nobody like him, and I m so thankful that I got to work with him and I hope to do it again and again, because it is truly very satisfying and just a huge amount of fun. I love him. I love him as a person. I love him as a director. There is nobody like him. He is singular and incredible.I took my family. We lived in beautiful house in Toronto. There were varying degrees of lockdown. But I ve got to say, I think, you couldn t get any safer than a film set. They re so regimented and disciplined and demanding in terms of having to toe the line and everyone does their best to not get it. You really are in a bubble and the whole of Toronto is in masks and you re just sanitizing your hands a million times a day and trying not to be in big crowds and you just have to be mindful of that. Especially when you re working, because there s a bigger risk there. It s not just you, it s everyone else, you know?Rotten Tomatoes: And finally, is there anything you could tell us about the film? What can we expect genre-wise – is this a big Del Toro fantasy? People are so curious.Collette: It s not fantasy, it s a period drama. It s just as gorgeously saturated visually [as his other films], but it s very much a drama. It s unlike some of his other work and the actors are incredible. It looks incredible. I personally can t wait to see it. I think there s almost four hours of footage, which needs to be whittled down. And I know that he s editing furiously at the moment, but it was a total joy. Between the hybrid release controversies of the summer and the continued lack of attendance for non-IP originals, particularly those aimed at adults, it is still anyone’s guess what we are headed for come the holiday movie season. Halloween Kills’ million weekend is a 33.8% drop from three years ago, but even that can be put in a positive perspective looking at other sequel drops of this stature over the years. Among R-rated sequels to films opening over million, 300: Rise of an Empire (36.4%), Ted 2 (38.4%), Paranormal Activity 4 (44.8%), Sex and the City 2 (45.6%), The Matrix Revolutions (47.1%), and The Hangover Part III (51.5%) all dropped further. Alien: Covenant fell 29.1% from Prometheus but didn’t have nearly as far to fall as Halloween Kills did, leaving It: Chapter 2 (26.2%) and Deadpool 2 (5.23%) as the higher standards. The point is that this is a really terrific number for David Gordon Green’s sequel..4 million is the sixth-best opening of the pandemic. As it marks the third consecutive week of a film opening over million, that statistic may quickly become an afterthought, though it shouldn’t. The first film was a rather frontloaded success story, posting just a 2.09 multiple over its opening weekend. Halloween Kills may be down 34% from the 2018 opening, but it is up 58% from the year’s best hybrid HBO MAX openings, with Godzilla vs. Kong and Space Jam: A New Legacy each in the million realm. Kong already had a two-day head start with .4 million prior to the weekend and to date is the only hybrid release (sans an additional fee) to crack the 0 million barrier. And that was a March 31 release that took over 11 weeks to reach that milestone. Halloween Kills is already halfway there in just three days.Kills also nearly doubled up The Suicide Squad (.2 million) for the best “R”-rated opening of the year in any release strategy. 54 million Peacock subscribers at last count compared to roughly 73 million for HBO MAX. (And those are late July numbers.) The five biggest WB/HBO MAX openings dropped like flies in their second weekends Godzilla vs. Kong (56.9%), The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It (57.1%), Space Jam: A New Legacy (69.1%), The Suicide Squad (71.5%), and Mortal Kombat (73.2%). 2018’s Halloween fell 58.8% to .4 million in weekend two, so there’s a good chance Kills falls below million next weekend, especially if people realize they actually have Peacock on their cable service. Ridley Scott’s The Last Duel was speculated to at least get into eight-digit territory this weekend. Its fate was all but sealed when it opened to just 0,000 in previews Thursday night, and the final numbers were even worse than imagined. The historical drama with a cast boasting Matt Damon, Adam Driver, Jodie Comer, and Ben Affleck grossed a mere .8 million this weekend. That is less than Damon in Stillwater did this summer (.18 million) and the worst start for a Damon-led film opening in over 3,000 theaters. The previous low was We Bought a Zoo (.36 million), which nevertheless went on to gross over million over its 2011 holiday season release.There is a strong chance that The Last Duel will not even be able to leg itself out enough to outgross All the Pretty Horses (.5 million) or Stillwater (.2 million), leaving it as the third-lowest grossing Damon-led film ahead of only Suburbicon (.77 million) and Promised Land (.59 million), both of which were released in fewer than 2,050 theaters. The story is far grimmer than anything surrounding Damon’s perceived star power, though. The Last Duel represents a continuing trend in the pandemic box office for anything other than a sequel, franchise, universe-builder, or Disneyland ride to break out among audiences. Free Guy, Raya and the Last Dragon, and Old are the only films outside of those categories to gross over million this year. With .3 million this weekend (a 56% drop) the 25th James Bond film is just shy of the milestone. That is a slightly better second weekend than F9 had ( million), though Bond is still nearly million behind its pace while also about million ahead of A Quiet Place Part II’s 10-day run. The film has a good chance to stick around the Top Five into just before Thanksgiving (and could hang on enough into that holiday) so we’ll stick with a final gross between 0-170 million domestically. Globally the film is over 7 million and could actually surpass F9’s 6 million to become the highest-grossing film of the pandemic era.Venom: Let There Be Carnage fell to .5 million (the second-best third weekend of the year), bringing its total to just over 8 million, still on a very solid pace for 0 million. That is about million below Shang-Chi’s third weekend and overall about million behind its 17-day pace. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings drove its total to over 8 million and is going to settle into the 5 million territory, suggesting that the Venom sequel will come in somewhere around the original Venom’s total of 3 million.The Addams Family 2, which is also on VOD for .99, is not far behind the pace of The Boss Baby: Family Business, which was also streaming on Peacock s subscription tiers. That animated film finished with over million. Addams looks to be in line to come in between -55 million. A24’s odd folktale, Lamb, managed to stay put in eighth place, falling from just over million to 3,000 and driving its total to million. But once that initial two-minute surprise had happened, then it was seamless. They completely forgot about the cameras. I do remember Pacino in particular. There s a scene where he is talking with Tony Pro (Stephen Graham) in jail, and they re sitting on a bench, and he s eating his ice cream. Tony Pro comes in for his money, and we shot that with three angles simultaneously. So each one of them has to be a three-headed monster, so it was nine cameras shooting the scene at the same time. I do remember Pacino was like, Whoa, what s all this? It was quite a thing. But, yes, as I said, initially he was surprised, but then totally forgot about it. We all hid behind our gear and made ourselves invisible.Helman: The other thing that you have to think about is that this is a brand new thing. This is the first time that we ve ever tried something like this. So from here on, things are going to get better. So the rigs are going to get very, very small. Technology is going to get faster. In visual effects, and I m sure it s everywhere in this business, we kind of stand on each other s shoulders to get to where we need to be. That was still low for an Illumination summer release, but notably much lower than the first film’s 4.3 million start in July 2016. As with Godzilla: King of the Monsters last week, that initial number proved to be way off: The film opened with just million. That is less than Despicable Me started with nearly a full decade ago (.3 million). Call this more a disappointment than any kind of outright disaster for the animation studio. They keep their productions relatively cheap ( million in this case.) Critics have been disappointed by six of their 10 features , including this one, which currently stands at 53% on the Tomatometer, with only Despicable Me getting above 80%. By comparison, Pixar has only had a single film receive a Rotten score (Cars 2 with 38%) and had 14 of their 20 films score over 90% on the Tomatometer.But Illumination’s films still make money. Seven of the studio’s films have made over a half-billion globally at the box office and two of them (Minions, Despicable Me 3) grossed over a billion. Illumination has not had a film gross less than 0 million domestically since 2012’s The Lorax, however.Only three animated films have ever opened to less than million and gone on to gross that much, and they were The Lion King, Shrek and, well, Illumination’s Sing. It grossed .5 million from Wednesday to Friday and .2 million over Friday to Monday during the 2016 holiday season and just grew and grew albeit with no direct animated competition until its eighth week when The Lego Batman Movie opened.Pets 2 is not going to have that luxury. As mentioned, Toy Story 4 is opening in just two weeks and the first-day pre-sales on May 28 outsold Incredibles 2. The first Pets movie opened three weeks after Finding Dory had already grossed 0 million. Toy Story 4 could gross half of that in its first three days, and Pets 2 could end up looking at a relatively soft domestic number even if its international numbers ( million to date) will no doubt turn it into another solid success for Illumination.Rotten Returns: Dark Phoenix Hits All New Lows for X-Men Franchise(Photo by 20th Century Fox)The X-Men films have not exactly been financial juggernauts. Logan and X-Men; Days of Future Past did very well as did both of the Deadpool films. X-Men: Apocalypse did cross the half-billion mark but barely squeaked out a profit for the studio. The rest of the films failed to cross that line and X-Men Origins: Wolverine, X-Men: First Class, and X-Men: The Last Stand did not even get out of the red while still in theaters. Now, in what is hardly a surprise, Dark Phoenix is setting new lows all around in what appears to be one last gasp before the heroes are repackaged under Disney’s version of Marvel.Starting with the critical response, Dark Phoenix now replaces X-Men Origins: Wolverine (37%) as the worst-scored of the franchise with a 22%. Six of the 11 films (not counting Once Upon a Deadpool) have scored 80% or higher. The Wolverine used to be the low-water mark for the franchise opening with .1 million, but Dark Phoenix scraped up just million this weekend. It is also the only film in the series to have a per-theater-average less than ,000 with an estimated ,869. Phoenix may have started with a reasonable million in Thursday previews, but among films to open on Thursdays between million– million, only Blade Runner 2049 had a lower opening with .7 million. When the final numbers come out Monday, Dark Phoenix may own that distinction.Thanks to extensive reshoots the film’s budget ballooned to 0 million. Days of Future Past survived that number, when it became the highest-grossing non-Deadpool film in the group. Brett Ratner’s The Last Stand failed with a 0-million budget despite still being the highest-grossing domestic entry with X-Men in the title. The last five films (including Logan and the Deadpools) have grossed between 9 million–3 million overseas. Dark Phoenix has made 7 million internationally so far. After the diminishing returns last weekend that ended up with just a .7 million weekend (a little more than half of 2014’s Godzilla million opening), the film dropped 67.5% in weekend two to .5 million. Let’s put that in perspective: First, a film with million or more after 10 days has never failed to reach 0 million, though there are a couple (Fifty Shades Freed, The Cat in the Hat) which came within a couple million of doing so. There is only one film that grossed over million in its opening weekend and then dropped under million the next: The Fault in Our Stars, which opened to million and fell to .7 million. That film still managed to gross 4.8 million, but Godzilla is already behind its pace by million and that is likely to fall off further. The film is up to 2 million globally and 5 million looks to be the magic number it needs to get into the black.Last week’s other releases did not drop quite as bad. Ma did fall 56.8%, which puts it just above Blumhouse’s Truth or Dare (.7 vs. .2 million after 10 days) and ahead in its second weekend gross by ,575 if the estimates hold. That film finished with just .4 million. Elton John musical biopic Rocketman fell 45.6% to million, which puts its final estimate somewhere between million– million domestic. It has grossed 1 million worldwide to date.Pokemon Detective Pikachu has passed 0 million globally, but still needs around another million in order to claim success. John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, at half the cost, has made over 2 million worldwide and is in the win column for Lionsgate. The Keanu Reeves action spectacular is actually right in line with what the first Mission: Impossible had made after 24 days (8.7 million), and it is only .2 million behind what it made in weekend four (.6 million.) That is giving it a final estimate somewhere between 5 million–5 million domestically; enough to pass La La Land for the sixth highest-grossing domestic film in Lionsgate history.Amazon this weekend opened the first of their big Sundance acquisitions this weekend. Late Night (81%) opened in four theaters and grossed 9,654 for a ,414 per-theater-average. That is the best four-theater opening of 2019 so far, besting Sundance surprise screening Fighting With My Family, which made 8,780 before it went wide, as Late Night will be doing next week. That number is better than similar Amazon openings such as Beautiful Boy (8,888) and Don’t Worry He Won’t Get Far on Foot (,339). In 2018, the top four theater openings were The Favourite (2,410), Free Solo (8,288), Eighth Grade (3,797), and Mid90s (8,157). Along with Eighth Grade, some other top Sundance PTAs over the years include The Kids Are All Right (,282) and The Big Sick (,315).Disney has the two biggest successes in the Top 10: Aladdin, which passed 0 million worldwide this weekend and now has a legitimate shot at reaching 0 million domestic, and Avengers: Endgame, which, at .730 billion, is roughly million away from passing Avatar and breaking the all-time record. The Top 10 films grossed 9.66 million and averaged 70.2% on the Tomatometer. This year’s Top 10 grossed an estimated 8.72 million and averaged 66.5% on the Tomatometer.On the Vine: Reboots Hope To Grab Box Office ScrapsA pair of reboots hope to take a small piece of the box office next weekend led by Men In Black International. A new cast, led by MCU buddies Tessa Thompson and Chris Hemsworth and guided by F. Gary Gray, suit up to fight new aliens. There is also a sequel to the 2000 remake of the 1971 original Shaft with Samuel L. Jackson. It is also called Shaft. Son of Shaft may be more appropriate or maybe Shaft: First Blood Part II. But Jackson returns with director Tim Story taking over for the late John Singleton. Finally, Jim Jarmusch takes on the zombie genre with an all-star cast, including Bill Murray and Adam Driver, in The Dead Don’t Die.
