皇冠体育在线采用百度引擎4(Baidu 6)they gave their feature film debut, the Oscar-nominated duo are probably a safe bet.Release Date TBDAmazing Stories(Photo by Apple)Talent: Steven Spielberg is on board to revive his 80s anthology series. Bryan Fuller (American Gods) and Hart Hanson (Bones) were originally on board to run the show, which was ordered for 10 episodes, but both departed in February 2018.What it s about: The sci-fi/horror/supernatural anthology series originally ran on NBC.Chances it ll be a Certified Fresh hit: Despite the talent involved, the creative departures could mean there s more behind-the-scenes drama — which can lead to on-screen discord — afoot. Plus, the series sounds more like a pulpy guilty pleasure than prestige awards bait. Still, it was the first new original series Apple teased at its big announcement, so there seems to be plenty of faith in the series.Little Voice(Photo by Apple)Talent: Tony-, Grammy-, and Emmy-nominated singer/songwriter/actress Sara Bareilles is writing the music (and could possibly star) in the J.J. Abrams-produced half-hour show, which received a straight-to-series order in June 2018.What it’s about: Based on the singer’s first album, The Hollywood Reporter described the series as “a love letter to the diverse musicality of New York” that “explores the universal journey of finding your authentic voice in your early 20s.Chances it’ll be a Certified Fresh hit: In addition to Bareilles and Abrams, the series will be run by Bareilles’ Waitress collaborator Jessie Nelson (who will also write and direct the first episode). With Waitress, Bareilles’ six Grammy nominees, and Abrams’ pedigree, this series has all the elements needed for success.Oprah Docuseries(Photo by Apple)Talent: In addition to re-launching her book club for Apple TV+, Oprah Winfrey is producing multiple documentaries for the service. What it s about: The first projects include a documentary on workplace abuse, and a series about mental health.Chances it ll be a Certified Fresh hit: Anyone who s known by single moniker has the star power to pretty much launch anything they want. Come on, it s Oprah! She won t let us down.Time Bandits(Photo by Stefania D'Alessandro/WireImage)Talent: Taika Waititi is set to co-write and direct the pilot for the project, which will also involve the film s original writer/director, Terry Gilliam. What it s about: While still in the development stages, the potential series is an adaptation of Gilliam’s 1981 fantasy film of the same name, about a young boy who joins a group of renegade time-traveling dwarves.Chances it ll be a Certified Fresh hit: Well, the original film is Certified Fresh, and at least five of Waititi s most recent projects are CF or Fresh on the Tomatometer too. The odds are definitely in his favor.Untitled Brie Larson CIA Project(Photo by Elizabeth Goodenough/Everett Collection)Talent: Oscar winner and Marvel superhero Brie Larson is set to star. What it s about: The new series is a look at a young woman s journey in the CIA told through the prism of her closest relationships, per Variety. The series is based on the experiences of real-life undercover CIA operative Amaryllis Fox and her upcoming memoir Life Undercover: Coming of Age in the CIA.Chances it ll be a Certified Fresh hit: Since 2010, Larson s been a part of a whopping 11 Certified Fresh films, with an additional three films sitting at Fresh on the Tomatometer and just a few (okay, four) at Rotten. That s a pretty stunning record. Let s just hope the show is more of a Room than a Basmati Blues.Defending Jacob(Photo by Jef Hernandez/Everett Collection)Talent: Captain America himself, Chris Evans, is starring in and executive producing the new series. What it’s about: Based on the bestselling novel of the same name, this limited series follows assistant district attorney Andy Barber, who’s investigating the murder of a 14-year-old boy and discovers his son is a suspect.Chances it’ll be a Certified Fresh hit: A fellow Hollywood Chris (Pine) had similar success executive producing and starring in the drama I Am the Night, so there’s no reason to think Evans couldn’t do the same.My Glory Was I Had Such Friends(Photo by Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection)Talent: Jennifer Garner and J.J. Abrams are staging an Alias reunion when the actress stars in the megaproducer’s latest TV project. She’ll also executive produce. What it’s about: The series is based on the 2017 memoir of the same name by Amy Silverstein, and according to its official description (via The Hollywood Reporter), “the drama showcases the power of friendship and the resilience of the human spirit as it follows an extraordinary group of women who supported Silverstein as she waited for a second life-saving heart transplant.”Chances it’ll be a Certified Fresh hit: Alias ran for five seasons, and Garner and Abrams are both A-list movie stars (in front of and behind the camera). Chances for success are high.Charlie Day–Rob McElhenney Series, Mythic Quest(Photo by Apple)Talent: It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia stars and creators Charlie Day and Rob McElhenney are writing and executive producing a new half-hour comedy. The series will star McElhenney, F. Murray Abraham, David Hornsby, Danny Pudi, and more. What it’s about: The sitcom follows the diverse group of people who work together in a video game development studio.Chances it’ll be a Certified Fresh hit: Believe it or not, Sunny is one of the longest-running sitcoms of all time. Anyone who can crack the secret to that kind of longevity while still remaining culturally relevant and, most importantly, funny certainly has the potential to do it again.Foundation(Photo by Penguin Random House; Frederick M. Brown/Getty Images)Talent: David S. Goyer (Blade, Christopher Nolan s Batman trilogy) and Josh Friedman (Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, Avatar 2) are developing an adaptation of the iconic novel series from famed sci-fi author Isaac Asimov for Skydance Television, the company behind Netflix s ambitious Altered Carbon. What it s about: The book series inspired plenty of the sci-fi you love, including Star Wars. It follows a mathematician who predicts the collapse of humanity, which is scattered on planets throughout the galaxy and ruled by the Galactic Empire. The first book was published in 1951, followed by sequels in the subsequent years and two more in the 80s, along with two prequels.Chances it ll be a Certified Fresh hit: There have been numerous attempts to turn Foundation into a feature film or a TV series before (including by disaster-movie king Roland Emmerich and Westworld creator Jonathan Nolan). Needless to say, the subject matter is daunting and will require a deft approach to capturing the books rich world. It could go very, very wrong. But if done well, it could enjoy Game of Thrones–level success.Untitled Richard Gere Series(Photo by Carlos Alvarez/Getty Images)Talent: Richard Gere is set to star in and executive produce the drama series. What it’s about: Based on the Israeli series Nevelot, the show will follow two elderly Vietnam vets whose lives are changed when a woman they both loved 50 years prior is killed in a car accident.Chances it’ll be a Certified Fresh hit: Though he’s had a storied film career, this is Gere’s first foray into television — so it’ll definitely be worth checking out.Hilde Lysiak Series, Home Before Dark(Photo by Apple)Talent: The Florida Project’s Brooklynn Prince is set to play the lead in the upcoming series, which is executive produced by Crazy Rich Asians director Jon M. Chu. Jim Sturgess will play her father. What it’s about: Inspired by the real-life story of Hilde Lysiak, a 9-year-old investigative reporter who uncovered a murder in her Pennsylvania hometown and broke the news in a paper she started herself, the 10-episode mystery series “follows a young girl who moves from Brooklyn to the small lakeside town her father left behind. While there, her dogged pursuit of the truth leads her to unearth a cold case that everyone in town, including her own father, tried hard to bury,” per Deadline.Chances it’ll be a Certified Fresh hit: Prince received plenty of great reviews for her film debut, but that’s no guarantee of success in a crowded TV landscape.Damien Chazelle Project(Photo by Frazer Harrison/Getty Images))Talent: La La Land director Damien Chazelle is writing and directing every episode of this straight-to-series drama. What it s about: No details about the series have been released, other than the fact that it s the Oscar winner s second foray into streaming TV (he s also involved in Netflix s musical drama The Eddy).Chances it ll be a Certified Fresh hit: Since there isn t any information on what the show is even about, this isn t a call that can be made quite yet. But Chazelle is batting two for two with his films Whiplash and La La Land, and his upcoming Neil Armstrong biopic First Man looks to be an awards contender.Central Park(Photo by Tim P. Whitby/Getty Images/for 21st Century Fox)Talent: Apple has ordered two seasons of the series, from Bob s Burgers creator Loren Bouchard, actor Josh Gad (pictured), and Nora Smith, which will feature voice talent from Gad, Leslie Odom Jr., Titus Burgess, Kristen Bell, Stanley Tucci, Daveed Diggs, and Kathryn Hahn. What it s about: The animated musical comedy follows a family of caretakers who live and work in Central Park and end up saving the park — and basically the world.Chances it ll be a Certified Fresh hit: Bob s Burgers is Emmy-nominated, so that pedigree plus the voice talent involved means there s certainly the potential for critical acclaim.Swagger(Photo by Cindy Ord/Getty Images for Kevin Durant Charity Foundation)Talent: NBA star Kevin Durant is producing the series along with Brian Grazer and Ron Howard’s Imagine Television, and Reggie Rock Blythewood (Shots Fired, Notorious) is writing. What it s about: Based on the early life and career of Durant, Swagger will explore the world of Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) basketball and the lives of the players, their families, and coaches.Chances it ll be a Certified Fresh hit: Like a jump ball, it s up in the air. The series is still being developed.CallsTalent: This international series has no major Hollywood players attached, but comes from creator Timothée Hochet. What it’s about: The first international co-production for Apple is an English adaptation of the French short-form series of the same name, which allows “audiences to experience short stories through real-life audio sources and minimal visuals,” per Deadline.Chances it’ll be a Certified Fresh hit: This is a format the U.S. hasn’t really seen before, so there’s plenty of potential for a really innovative, groundbreaking series.Talent: Documentarian Matt Tyrnauer (Valentino: The Last Emperor, pictured) will direct all 10 one-hour episodes of the first season. What it s about: Home offers viewers a never-before-seen look inside the world’s most extraordinary homes and delves into the minds of the people who built them.Chances it ll be a Certified Fresh hit: If Tyrnauer serves up the dishy stories behind those gated palaces, the series is sure to be more than simply gorgeous real estate porn.Like this? The Suicide Squad Cast Hails the "Genius" of James Gunn and Geeks Out Over King Shark and Polka-Dot Man Plus, the team behind the acclaimed DC film breaks down some of the movie's most epic scenes and talks about the wildest version of Harley Quinn we've seen on screen yet. by RT Staff | July 29, 2021 | Comments

The documentaries at this year’s Sundance Film Festival shared stories of good versus evil, of hard work and cutting loose, of reflections on life and death, of sharing never-before-seen stories and keeping viewers informed. With so many documentaries to choose from, it can be easy to get lost in all of the options. Fortunately, if you missed the film industry’s annual trek to Park City, many of these award-winning films will soon make it to a streaming platform or screen near you.Boys State (2020) 94%(Photo by Thorsten Thielow courtesy of Sundance Institute)Distributor: Apple TV+, A24First-time director Amanda McBaine made the jump from producing to collaborate with her The Overnighters director Jesse Moss for an incisive look at U.S. politics through the eyes of young boys in Texas. The result is an astonishing documentary that examines how young people are shaping politics and how campaign strategies affect our own views – even on the scale of a boys civics camp. On awards night, Boys State won the U.S. Grand Jury Prize in its category. Jordan Raup wrote in The Film Stage, “This extraordinary portrait of a democratic process in microcosm is both a testament to how Washington, D.C. and the rest of the country could achieve bipartisanship as well as a look at what has led to such a fractured political system.”The Truffle Hunters (2020) 97%(Photo by Courtesy of Sundance Institute)Distributor: Sony Pictures ClassicsDirecting team Michael Dweck and Gregory Kershaw set their sights on Northern Italy, where a secret society of village elders and dogs protect their ritual of hunting for rare Alba Truffles from prying eyes. Although demand for the truffles is high, the group resists giving out their locations and even hunts at night to avoid detection. The documentary is at once a delightful character study and a meditation on greed versus the need to keep the tradition alive. Lee Marshall of Screen International wrote, “A slow-burn watch, The Truffle Hunters is a film as distinctive and lingering as the scent of the rare tuber that inspires it.”The Dissident (2020) 96%(Photo by Jake Swantko courtesy of Sundance Institute)Distributor: N/AOscar-winning documentarian Bryan Fogel investigates the mysteries surrounding the death of Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi after he entered the Saudi Arabian consulate in Turkey and never returned to his fiancée, Hatice Cengiz. The film retraces his steps through new footage and the testimonies of those who knew him for an intimate portrait of a man whose work continues to spurn the Saudi Arabian officials who tried to silence him. Eric Kohn of Indiewire said, “Fogel assembles a sturdy compendium of talking heads to explain how Khashoggi managed to speak truth to power for so long, and why his fate reverberates for other Saudis who share his sentiments.”Mucho Mucho Amor: The Legend of Walter Mercado (2020) 100%(Photo by Giovan Cordero courtesy of Sundance Institute)Distributor: NetflixCristina Costantini and Kareem Tabsch had just finished filming their documentary about famed Puerto Rican astrologer Walter Mercado when he died in November of 2019. At the height of his fame, Mercado reached around 120 million people with his messages of love and hope – before he mysteriously went off the air in the 2000s. The result became Mucho Mucho Amor, a tribute to the man behind many sequined capes that reveals what happened to Mercado before and after his time as one of TV’s most charismatic personalities. Writing for The Wrap, Carlos Aguilar called Much Mucho Amor “a tribute as inspired and jubilant as its majestic subject, a true original.”Bloody Nose, Empty Pockets (2020) 93%(Photo by Courtesy of Sundance Institute)Distributor: N/AIn the waning months of 2016, documentarians Bill Ross IV and Turner Ross filmed the closing night of a local Las Vegas bar, capturing the patrons’ tearful goodbyes and plenty of dazed stares from one too many drinks. Only, the premise was actually a set-up: the bar is still open (and located in New Orleans), and everyone involved was instructed to behave as if the set-up were true. Nevertheless, the film is full of genuine emotions coming from normal people, blurring the lines between documentary film and traditional narrative. Amy Nicholson of Variety wrote, “It s The Bachelorette wed to The Iceman Cometh: the setup is staged, but the tears are real.”Dick Johnson Is Dead (2020) 100%(Photo by John Wakayama Carey courtesy of Sundance Institute)Distributor: NetflixWith her feature debut, Cameraperson, Kirsten Johnson emerged as one of the documentary world’s most exciting new voices. Her next project, Dick Johnson is Dead, is radically different but no less inventive, challenging the way we talk about and imagine faith, aging, death, and the afterlife. As Johnson follows her own father s struggles with memory loss, the two confront the inevitable with plenty of laughs and heartfelt moments. Nick Allen of RogerEbert.com called it “a gorgeous blend of truth and fiction, with a guiding sense of humor that allows her film to always be honest and hilarious.”On the Record (2020) 99%(Photo by Becca Haydu courtesy of Sundance Institute)Distributor: HBO MaxAlthough Kirby Dick and Amy Ziering’s documentary On the Record may have first caught the national spotlight after the departure of one of its top producers and a distributor, they bounced back at the Sundance Film Festival with a rapturous premiere screening. Their movie follows Drew Dixon as she recounts in vivid detail the night Russell Simmons assaulted her and processes the impact it eventually left on her career, wrestling with the pressure of coming forward in the wake of the #MeToo era. Her story was later painfully corroborated by several women who Simmons also harassed or assaulted. Beandrea July wrote in The Hollywood Reporter, “The overall result is an intimate look at what is at stake when rape victims decide whether or not to tell their stories.”Welcome to Chechnya (2020) 100%(Photo by Courtesy of Sundance Institute)Distributor: HBODavid France heads to closed-off Chechnya to meet the LGBTQ activists bravely combating the government-sanctioned violence against their community and helping others escape almost certain death. The documentary captures their struggle against the persecution of LGBTQ individuals and anyone seen supporting them, as the international press is shut out and the Russian government turns a blind eye to the carnage. Alonso Duralde of The Wrap called the film “a chilling examination of both the brutality that the Chechen LGBT community is forced to face on a daily basis and the difficulty of leaving the country for peace and safety.”The Painter and the Thief (2020) 96%(Photo by Barbora Kysilkova courtesy of Sundance Institute)Distributor: N/AAfter two of Barbora Kysilkova’s paintings are stolen from an art gallery in Oslo, the artist approaches one of the men accused of stealing them, Karl-Bertil Nordland, and offers to paint his portrait in the hopes of learning where her still-missing paintings may have gone. Instead, the two strike up an unlikely friendship over several years. Benjamin Ree’s The Painter and the Thief won the World Cinema Documentary Special Jury Award for Creative Storytelling at the Sundance Awards on Saturday. Esther Zuckerman said in Thrillist, “Norwegian documentary filmmaker Ree paints a remarkable portrait of two lives that become intertwined.”The Fight (2020) 99%(Photo by Sabrina Lantos courtesy of Sundance Institute)Distributor: Magnolia PicturesCo-directors Elyse Steinberg, Josh Kriegman, and Eli Despres reunite after their first project together, Weiner, to film the ongoing saga of what it’s like to be an ACLU lawyer in the Age of Trump. It’s a behind-the-scenes look at headlines and the high-stakes battles for freedom behind closed doors. The film won the U.S. Documentary Special Jury Award for Social Impact Filmmaking at the Sundance awards ceremony. Kate Erbland wrote in Indiewire, “The unfussy stuff, the human stuff, is what works best, both for The Fight and the very people it follows.”Feels Good Man (2020) 95%(Photo by Christian Bruno courtesy of Sundance Institute)Distributor: N/AFirst-time filmmaker Arthur Jones follows the riveting transformation of the viral Internet character Pepe the Frog from an innocent comic figure to a symbol for internet trolls and the far right. Pepe’s creator, Matt Furie, now wants him back, but is it too late to save the frog’s reputation on the internet? Feels Good Man explores the unruly nature of internet meme culture and reveals how few rights creators have over their creations once they’re online. Jones won the U.S. Documentary Special Jury Award for Emerging Filmmaker. Angie Han of Mashable wrote, “Jones demonstrates an insatiable curiosity about his subject, speaking with everyone from a former Trump campaign insider to a collector of Rare Pepes to an expert on the occult.”Collective (2019) 99%(Photo by Courtesy of Sundance Institute)Distributor: Magnolia PicturesAs one of the standouts in the festival’s Spotlight section, Collective remained a must-see title, as director Alexander Nanau documents the step-by-step unfolding of a tragedy with in-depth details and breathtaking footage. After a devastating fire at a night club killed many and seriously injured several dozens more, investigative reporters discovered the government blocked survivors from life-saving treatments and covered up health code violations that led to the loss of several more lives. The harrowing account raises questions about who should be held accountable, if anyone will be at all. Vikram Murthi wrote for The Film Stage, “Collective sports a procedural-like pace that keeps the information legible and the action linear. It doesn t preclude a lighthearted touch nor get bogged down in misery to underline its points.”Like this? In the world of Game of Thrones, conventional wisdom would suggest Daenerys Targaryen has proved herself a fair and just leader, powerful, and compassionate, but firm. Others may see it that Jon Snow, aka Aegon Targaryen, truly is the rightful ruler by Westeros tradition, given that his father was the uncrowned king of the land Rhaegar Targaryen, killed before he could reveal his legitimate marriage to Jon s mother, Lyanna Stark. Or maybe possession really is nine-tenths of the law, and Cersei Lannister, who in no other way is the legitimate ruler, should continue to reign. Why bother watching season 8, when you can read our hot takes on who should sit the Iron Throne?Should Take the Throne: Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke)(Photo by Helen Sloan/HBO)Some in Deanery’s shoes would be content to rest on their laurels: She has two dragons and a rightful claim to the throne – case closed. But Daenerys has gone above and beyond to earn her place on the Iron Throne. She’s endured personal losses (her dear dead Drogo, their unborn child, her dear undead dragon) and inspired audiences over and over again with moments of strength and steeliness. Most of all, across seven seasons of city-hopping and army-charring, she’s proven a master strategist and builder of alliances, bringing together groups as disparate as the Dothrakis and the Unsullied to form a formidable force as she moves towards what’s rightfully hers.Should Take the Throne: Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage)(Photo by Helen Sloan/HBO)Don’t dismiss Tyrion Lannister as the Miss Congeniality of Thrones’ remaining contenders. He may be likable and gentle-hearted – at least in Westerosi terms – but he is also the shrewdest political mind left, a key skill to have in a place that gets so stabby. He’s in many ways one of the series’ ultimate survivors, managing to make it to adulthood despite his family’s unbridled hatred of him, and working his way to Daenerys’ side (the likely winning side). It should be noted he’s also part of the reason there’s still a throne for the series’ aspirants’ to sit on at all, stopping the destruction/sacking of King’s Landing not once but twice – and earning his scar in the process.Should Take the Throne: Jaime Lannister (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau)(Photo by Helen Sloan/HBO)One key to good leadership is growth, and few characters have grown quite as much as Jaime. After all, the wounded, chisel-jawed hero who has slowly won your heart over seven seasons was not so long ago the sister-bonking cad who pushed Bran out of a tower in the final moments of Thrones’ first-ever episode. It’s been a “journey.” Throughout that journey, we’ve seen Jaime develop a number of the traits that would steer him well as king (but perhaps make his reign somewhat short): a developing sense of selflessness, a propensity fo

WW84 is at its entertaining best in the early sequences. David Rooney, Hollywood ReporterThis opening scene is everything you want from a Wonder Woman film. Rodrigo Perez, The PlaylistThe first 10 minutes of Wonder Woman 1984 moved me to tears. Germain Lussier, io9.comOr does it just take too long to get going?Once [the opening] sojourn is out of the way, the rest of Wonder Woman 1984‘s whopping two-and-a-half hour runtime flies by. Hoai-Tran Bui, SlashfilmThe pacing does feel a little uneven throughout, with a slow start establishing new characters. Nicola Austin, We Have a HulkIt takes some time to get to the major action set pieces (other than the prologue, which is gorgeous), but it’s too much of a pleasure to live in this well-realized place, populated by a quartet of capable and charismatic stars, to really care. Mary Sollosi, Entertainment WeeklyWonder Woman 1984 is well past its one-hour mark before its various characters and plot points coalesce into a single story, though it’s all so fun and frisky that such issues don’t entirely grate. Kate Erbland, IndieWireThe straightforward premise doesn’t fully justify the elongated run time. Courtney Howard, Fresh Fiction(Photo by Courtesy of Warner Bros. Pictures)How is the 1980s setting? The aesthetics are great, capturing the ‘80s in a way that isn t distracting or overwhelming but instead feels natural to the characters and the world they inhabit. Gabriella Geisinger, Digital SpyThe ’80s decor (courtesy of production designer Aline Bonetto) is by turns cheeky and earnest, celebratory and satirical. Justin Chang, Los Angeles TimesIt provides the satirical underpinnings for Wonder Woman 1984 to mock the rapacious greed of the Reagan era and its ongoing reverberations into the 21st century. Alonso Duralde, The WrapThe period proves a strangely apt lens through which to view Diana, whose unflappable earnestness can never fully avoid registering as slightly cheesy, but it goes down easier coming from an ‘80s flick. Mary Sollosi, Entertainment WeeklyDoes the movie have a good message? The underlying message the film subtly sends – that all it takes is one person to inspire change in a cynical world – is resoundingly poignant. Courtney Howard, Fresh FictionThere s a touching message about togetherness that everyone needs to hear. Emma Simmonds, The ListWonder Woman 1984 is a story that only works because it’s about Diana and her distinct evolution, a superhero movie about, of all wild ideas, being a good person. Kate Erbland, IndieWireWonder Woman 1984 is a movie with a well-intentioned message that has no idea how to put that message into a compelling story. Matt Goldberg, Collider(Photo by Clay Enos/©2020 Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc.)How is it to see Diana and Steve together again? There really is a beautiful love between the two characters, and in a few key scenes, you’ll be swept up in their romance. Nicola Austin, We Have a Hulk[Pine] and Gadot have solid chemistry and play up the obvious I missed 70 years of technology fish-out-of-water bit with great success. Germain Lussier, io9.comThe chemistry that Pine and Gadot had in the first film doesn’t radiate in the same way. Rodrigo Perez, The PlaylistIt feels like a burden in the sequel not simply to the plot but to Diana s entire character. She becomes almost entirely defined by her devotion to Steve. Esther Zuckerman, ThrillistHow is Pedro Pascal as Maxwell Lord?He is DYNAMITE… Pascal knows he’s in a crazy movie and he amps up the craziness of the plot of this film in every scene he’s in. Mike Ryan, UproxxIf there ever was a role that played perfectly to Pascal’s natural charisma, it’s Maxwell Lord. Hoai-Tran Bui, SlashfilmThere will be comic book fans who will not take a liking to certain changes in the Max Lord character. I, for one, love the different take on the villain. John Nguyen, Nerd ReactorThe overt Trumpiness, especially this late in the game, is just too on-the-nose to be amusing. David Rooney, Hollywood ReporterGame as Pascal is, I think he could have been jettisoned and Wiig moved to the center. Richard Lawson, Vanity Fair(Photo by Clay Enos/©2020 Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc.)And what about Kristen Wiig as Cheetah?Wiig masters the role – at first, it’s the dorky comedy star we all recognize; by the end, there’s a fire we’ve never seen before. Clarisse Loughrey, IndependentWiig does a great job in the Cheetah role and is truly hilarious as Barbara in the earlier scenes. Linda Marric, The Jewish ChronicleWiig genuinely surprised me with her performance, particularly in the action sequences… however she does become somewhat underused toward the final act, which is a shame. Nicola Austin, We Have a HulkWiig is terrific, but there s just not enough of her. Fionnuala Halligan, Screen InternationalWiig attempts to stretch her range but just seems miscast. David Rooney, Hollywood ReporterDoes the film work well enough on the small screen?I do wonder if I’d have gotten antsy in a theater, as opposed to sitting on my couch at home where I could have watched another hour of Wonder Woman and Maxwell Lord having a blast. Mike Ryan, UproxxThis reviewer can only assume [the visuals] must’ve looked much cooler on a big screen; on my TV at home, they ranged from fine to excellent. Angie Han, MashableDare we ask if this is the right movie for these times? As trite as it sounds to repeat this far-too repeated phrase, [it’s] a much-needed balm for 2020. Hoai-Tran Bui, SlashfilmAt this point in 2020 it feels trite to label anything as what we need right now, but spending just shy of three hours in the company of such buoyant, heartening storytellers gave me some of the most uncompromising feelings of joy I’ve felt all year. Ella Kemp, WeLoveCinemaEvery brazen beat of Wonder Woman 1984 feels like it’s arrived to pulverize this miserable year into dust. Clarisse Loughrey, IndependentWhat we need right now this movie can’t solve, but just maybe, it will inspire someone who can. Peter Debruge, VarietyWonder Woman 1984 premieres in theaters and on HBO Max on December 25, 2020.Thumbnail image by Warner Bros. PicturesOn an Apple device? Follow Rotten Tomatoes on Apple News.

Ghcxuf ), Hank Hall/Hawk (Alan Ritchson), Dawn Granger/Dove (Minka Kelly), Jason Todd/Robin (Curran Walters), and Donna Troy/Wonder Girl (Conor Leslie) will be joined by a whole slew of new characters. And you might want to know a little bit about them ahead of time.Luckily, we’re here and remember the days when the Teen Titans were a group of sidekicks and that the 1990s Superboy had an odd origin. So let’s take a look at these new characters comic book pasts and what it could mean for the new season of Titans.Superboy(Photo by DC Universe)Aliases: Conner Kent, Kon-ElFirst Appearance: Adventures of Superman #500Created By: Karl Kesel and Tom GrummettPlayed By: Joshua OrpinBackground: Originally “the closest genetic equivalent” of Superman, Superboy was a Project Cadmus experiment to clone the Man of Steel and further the group’s agenda. It later turned out that experiment included using the DNA of Lex Luthor to accomplish Cadmus’s goal. After breaking out of the lab and establishing himself as the Kid of Steel, Superboy eventually received both Earther and Kryptonian names. He also helped found the Young Justice team, where he became good friends with the then-current Robin, Tim Drake.Relevance To Season 2: We expect Superboy’s search for identity will dominate his Titans storyline and maybe even lead to the Luthor connection. We also expect he’ll end up calling himself “Conner” in some roundabout way. Maybe Raven (Teagan Croft) will think of it.Aqualad(Photo by DC Universe)Alias: Garth, TempestFirst Appearance: Adventure Comics #269Created By: Robert Bernstein and Ramona FradonPlayed By: Drew Van AckerBackground: Heir to the throne of an Atlantean colony, Garth was left for dead when the Atlantean ruling class declared him inferior. Saved by both Aquaman and his father, Atlan, Garth became Aquaman s sidekick with very similar powers — though they changed to a mystical origin thanks to subsequent writers. Once Aquaman had his own family, Garth sought out new bonds and found it with the group of teen sidekicks known as the Teen Titans.Relevance To Season 2: On Titans, it easy to see his status as a sidekick remains from the few glimpses of him in the trailer released a few weeks back. But it is unclear if he is still alive in the program’s present-day story. Is it possible his death led Dick Grayson to break up the original team? Considering his moments in the trailers appear to be flashbacks to the original Titans days, his demise is a possibility.Jericho(Photo by DC Universe)Alias: Joseph WilsonFirst Appearance: Tales of the Teen Titans #43Created By: Marv Wolfman and George PérezPlayed By: Chella ManBackground: The youngest son of Slade Wilson, Joseph lost the ability to speak at a young age when he was held for ransom. But he would eventually learn he could control others by establishing eye contact. Discovering his father accepted a contract to kill the Titans, he assumed the identity of Jericho, joined the team, and saved them from Slade’s plot. Unfortunately, souls previously corrupted by Trigon entered Jericho and slowly took possession of his body; leaving Slade little choice but to kill him.Relevance To Season 2: With all that in mind, it is possible Trigon himself will attempt to possess Jericho should the Titans seemingly defeat him in the season premiere. Then again, Jericho may just be running from his infamous father — more on Deathstroke in a bit. Either way, Jericho will not be the new comic relief. That s still Beast Boy s (Ryan Potter) job.Ravager(Photo by DC Universe)Alias: Rose WilsonFirst Appearance: Deathstroke #15Created By: Marv Wolfman and Art NicholsPlayed By: Chelsea ZhangBackground: The daughter of Slade Wilson and Hmong refugee Lillian Worth, Rose was raised not knowing about her father. He also knew nothing about her. Upon discovering the truth, he left her with the Titans believing she would quickly die staying with him. She soon exhibited precognitive abilities while training with the team. But because nothing is simple with Slade, he hired his own half-brother Wade DeFarge to threaten her life so they could bond over the shared trauma. His weird idea worked, though, as she ended up killing DeFarge and taking his costumed identity of Ravager.Relevance To Season 2: And if Titans incorporates even half of the stuff her comic book counterpart has done in the last 30 years, she’ll be the show’s best new character. Judging from the trailer, we ll see her gouge out her own left eye early on — her comic book counterpart did the same thing to prove her devotion to Deathstroke.DeathstrokeAlias: Slade WilsonFirst Appearance: The New Teen Titans #2Created By: Marv Wolfman and George PérezPlayed By: Esai MoralesBackground: You might think from the entries on his kids — or from his many appearances on Arrow and the Teen Titans animated series — that you have a handle on Slade Wilson. But his relationship to the Titans makes for a rather different take on Deathstroke this time around: an unequivocal villain with dubious morals and an ends justify the means philosophy. A gifted soldier, Slade was selected for an Army experiment to create supersoldiers. He received abilities like Captain America, but lost his dedication to the country and became a notorious mercenary. Being gifted in his trade, he was able to hide his real work from his wife and sons. Some years later, his older son Grant took up the family business and accepted a contract to assassinate the Teen Titans. When he failed — dying in the process — Slade picked up the contract, beginning a long enmity with the team.Relevance To Season 2: And from the trailer, we know this enmity already exists on Titans with Dick disbanding the original team after an encounter with Deathstroke. Although it is unclear if the incident with Grant was the underlying cause of Dick s decision. Deathstoke often vacillates between antagonist and antihero, but we hope to see the character thoroughly play the villain and manipulate the Titans as often as he attempts to kill them.Dr. Light(Photo by DC Universe)Aliases: Arthur LightFirst Appearance: Justice League of America #12Created By: Gardner Fox and Mike SekowskiPlayed By: Michael MosleyBackground: After accidentally killing his S.T.A.R. Labs coworker and stealing his light-powered super-suit, Arthur Light became a minor antagonist to the Justice League and a more persistent, if laughable enemy to the Teen Titans. Essentially a comedy villain for many years, the 2004 miniseries Identity Crisis saw his past as a de-fanged children s villain revamped into something more deadly and serious.Relevance To Season 2: Considering the way Identity Crisis changed him, we expect Dr. Light to make a blast from the past appearance, illustrating the way the world has changed since Dick disbanded the team. That said, his light-powered armor glimpsed in a few moments during the trailer sure looks silly. But we wouldn t put it past the show to give a us a big misdirection where Dr. Light is concerned.Shimmer(Photo by DC Universe)Aliases: Selinda FlindersFirst Appearance: New Teen Titans #3Created By: Marv Wolfman and George PérezPlayed By: Hanneke TalbotBackground: An Australian metahuman sent to Markovia (of Black Lightning fame) to get a sense of morality, Shimmer ended up co-founding the Fearsome Five alongside her brother Baran, Dr. Light, and the villains Gizmo and Psimon. The group repeatedly fought the Titans before both Shimmer and her brother retired from their criminal careers. Psimon eventually killed her and Shazam archfoe Dr. Sivana used the promise of resurrecting her to convince Baran to join a new Fearsome Five.Relevance To Season 2: Dr. Light s present-day activities may include forming a Fearsome Five. But with dialogue in the trailer suggesting a past between Donna Troy (Conor Leslie) and Shimmer, we re inclined to think the Titans sudden return will bring all of their old foes out of retirement.Bruce Wayne(Photo by DC Universe)conor leslieAliases: Batman, The Dark Knight, The Caped CrusaderFirst Appearance: Detective Comics #27Created By: Bob Kane and Bill FingerPlayed By: Iain GlenBackground: After the death of his parents, young Bruce Wayne trained his mind and body to wage a one-man war on crime itself. He also eventually adopted Dick Grayson and drafted him into his war.Relevance to Season 2: On Titans, Bruce’s choice to bring Dick into his crusade is treated in the first season as a form of abuse; motivating Dick’s reluctance to protect Rachel from her father or lead the group of new metas he discovered along the way. In the second season, we will see a much older Bruce ready to hand the cowl over to Dick. Considering the way Batman was framed last season, we expect this request to come with a lot of caveats and seem more like a poisoned chalice than the chance of a lifetime. Back in the comics, Dick eventually established his own identity — even if he has taken the mantle of the Bat a couple of times — and we expect his journey to finding that identity on Titans will be dramatized in his encounters with Bruce. Also, thanks to Identity Crisis, Batman and Deathstroke are considered opposite numbers in the DC Universe, so it is always possible they will come to blows as well.Titans season 2 premieres Friday, September 6 on DC Universe. 😈😈

Given this weekend s overall box office bust, domestic audiences appear like they may be saving some of the money for the eventual spend in a couple weeks when Toy Story 4 opens. That film’s pre-sales are already expected to boost its opening weekend into the biggest animated opening of all-time. Because it sure did not happen this week.KING OF THE CROP: Pets Sequel Starts Soft (Photo by Universal Pictures)Just a few weeks ago tracking services had The Secret Life of Pets 2 at million. That was still low for an Illumination summer release, but notably much lower than the first film’s 4.3 million start in July 2016. As with Godzilla: King of the Monsters last week, that initial number proved to be way off: The film opened with just million. That is less than Despicable Me started with nearly a full decade ago (.3 million). Call this more a disappointment than any kind of outright disaster for the animation studio. They keep their productions relatively cheap ( million in this case.) Critics have been disappointed by six of their 10 features , including this one, which currently stands at 53% on the Tomatometer, with only Despicable Me getting above 80%. By comparison, Pixar has only had a single film receive a Rotten score (Cars 2 with 38%) and had 14 of their 20 films score over 90% on the Tomatometer. But Illumination’s films still make money. Seven of the studio’s films have made over a half-billion globally at the box office and two of them (Minions, Despicable Me 3) grossed over a billion. Illumination has not had a film gross less than 0 million domestically since 2012’s The Lorax, however.Only three animated films have ever opened to less than million and gone on to gross that much, and they were The Lion King, Shrek and, well, Illumination’s Sing. It grossed .5 million from Wednesday to Friday and .2 million over Friday to Monday during the 2016 holiday season and just grew and grew albeit with no direct animated competition until its eighth week when The Lego Batman Movie opened.Pets 2 is not going to have that luxury. As mentioned, Toy Story 4 is opening in just two weeks and the first-day pre-sales on May 28 outsold Incredibles 2. The first Pets movie opened three weeks after Finding Dory had already grossed 0 million. Toy Story 4 could gross half of that in its first three days, and Pets 2 could end up looking at a relatively soft domestic number even if its international numbers ( million to date) will no doubt turn it into another solid success for Illumination.Rotten Returns: Dark Phoenix Hits All New Lows for X-Men Franchise(Photo by 20th Century Fox)The X-Men films have not exactly been financial juggernauts. Logan and X-Men; Days of Future Past did very well as did both of the Deadpool films. X-Men: Apocalypse did cross the half-billion mark but barely squeaked out a profit for the studio. The rest of the films failed to cross that line and X-Men Origins: Wolverine, X-Men: First Class, and X-Men: The Last Stand did not even get out of the red while still in theaters. Now, in what is hardly a surprise, Dark Phoenix is setting new lows all around in what appears to be one last gasp before the heroes are repackaged under Disney’s version of Marvel.Starting with the critical response, Dark Phoenix now replaces X-Men Origins: Wolverine (37%) as the worst-scored of the franchise with a 22%. Six of the 11 films (not counting Once Upon a Deadpool) have scored 80% or higher. The Wolverine used to be the low-water mark for the franchise opening with .1 million, but Dark Phoenix scraped up just million this weekend. It is also the only film in the series to have a per-theater-average less than ,000 with an estimated ,869. Phoenix may have started with a reasonable million in Thursday previews, but among films to open on Thursdays between million– million, only Blade Runner 2049 had a lower opening with .7 million. When the final numbers come out Monday, Dark Phoenix may own that distinction. Thanks to extensive reshoots the film’s budget ballooned to 0 million. Days of Future Past survived that number, when it became the highest-grossing non-Deadpool film in the group. Brett Ratner’s The Last Stand failed with a 0-million budget despite still being the highest-grossing domestic entry with X-Men in the title. The last five films (including Logan and the Deadpools) have grossed between 9 million–3 million overseas. Dark Phoenix has made 7 million internationally so far. Seventeen of the 37 films to open between million– million failed to reach 0 million, and Dark Phoenix is likely to be joining that list possibly with million less than what The Wolverine (2.5 million) finished with.Top Ten And Beyond: Aladdin, Godzilla, Rocketman, and Ma(Photo by Warner Bros. Pictures)Warner Bros.’ Godzilla: King of the Monsters could just as easily have been placed in the Rotten Returns section. After the diminishing returns last weekend that ended up with just a .7 million weekend (a little more than half of 2014’s Godzilla million opening), the film dropped 67.5% in weekend two to .5 million. Let’s put that in perspective: First, a film with million or more after 10 days has never failed to reach 0 million, though there are a couple (Fifty Shades Freed, The Cat in the Hat) which came within a couple million of doing so. There is only one film that grossed over million in its opening weekend and then dropped under million the next: The Fault in Our Stars, which opened to million and fell to .7 million. That film still managed to gross 4.8 million, but Godzilla is already behind its pace by million and that is likely to fall off further. The film is up to 2 million globally and 5 million looks to be the magic number it needs to get into the black.Last week’s other releases did not drop quite as bad. Ma did fall 56.8%, which puts it just above Blumhouse’s Truth or Dare (.7 vs. .2 million after 10 days) and ahead in its second weekend gross by ,575 if the estimates hold. That film finished with just .4 million. Elton John musical biopic Rocketman fell 45.6% to million, which puts its final estimate somewhere between million– million domestic. It has grossed 1 million worldwide to date.Pokemon Detective Pikachu has passed 0 million globally, but still needs around another million in order to claim success. John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, at half the cost, has made over 2 million worldwide and is in the win column for Lionsgate. The Keanu Reeves action spectacular is actually right in line with what the first Mission: Impossible had made after 24 days (8.7 million), and it is only .2 million behind what it made in weekend four (.6 million.) That is giving it a final estimate somewhere between 5 million–5 million domestically; enough to pass La La Land for the sixth highest-grossing domestic film in Lionsgate history.Amazon this weekend opened the first of their big Sundance acquisitions this weekend. Late Night (81%) opened in four theaters and grossed 9,654 for a ,414 per-theater-average. That is the best four-theater opening of 2019 so far, besting Sundance surprise screening Fighting With My Family, which made 8,780 before it went wide, as Late Night will be doing next week. That number is better than similar Amazon openings such as Beautiful Boy (8,888) and Don’t Worry He Won’t Get Far on Foot (,339). In 2018, the top four theater openings were The Favourite (2,410), Free Solo (8,288), Eighth Grade (3,797), and Mid90s (8,157). Along with Eighth Grade, some other top Sundance PTAs over the years include The Kids Are All Right (,282) and The Big Sick (,315).Disney has the two biggest successes in the Top 10: Aladdin, which passed 0 million worldwide this weekend and now has a legitimate shot at reaching 0 million domestic, and Avengers: Endgame, which, at .730 billion, is roughly million away from passing Avatar and breaking the all-time record. Next week will be its eighth and likely final week in the Top 10. Avatar spent 14 weeks in the Top 10; seven of those in the No. 1 slot back in 2009.This Time Last Year: New Ocean Crew Stole Record Amount Opening WeekendSandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, and Co. took the top spot with Ocean’s 8 grossing .6 million, higher than any of Steven Soderbergh’s Ocean’s films and ultimately outgrossing both of the sequels. Ari Aster’s Sundance horror sensation, Hereditary, opened in fourth with .5 million behind Solo: A Star Wars Story and Deadpool 2. Global Road (formerly Open Road’s) Hotel Artemis proved to be a bust with just .2 million, while Avengers: Infinity War passed the 0 million line. The Top 10 films grossed 9.66 million and averaged 70.2% on the Tomatometer. This year’s Top 10 grossed an estimated 8.72 million and averaged 66.5% on the Tomatometer. On the Vine: Reboots Hope To Grab Box Office ScrapsA pair of reboots hope to take a small piece of the box office next weekend led by Men In Black International. A new cast, led by MCU buddies Tessa Thompson and Chris Hemsworth and guided by F. Gary Gray, suit up to fight new aliens. There is also a sequel to the 2000 remake of the 1971 original Shaft with Samuel L. Jackson. It is also called Shaft. Son of Shaft may be more appropriate or maybe Shaft: First Blood Part II. But Jackson returns with director Tim Story taking over for the late John Singleton. Finally, Jim Jarmusch takes on the zombie genre with an all-star cast, including Bill Murray and Adam Driver, in The Dead Don’t Die. The film from the indie darling was met with some indifference from Cannes this year and currently sits at 50% on the Tomatometer. The Full Top 10: June 7-9The Secret Life of Pets 2 (2019) 60% – .11 million (.03 million total)Dark Phoenix (2019) 22% – million (.00 million total)Aladdin (2019) 57% – .50 million (2.38 million total)Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019) 42% – .54 million (.59 million total)Rocketman (2019) 89% – million (.49 million total)Ma (2019) 56% – .82 million (.76 million total)John Wick: Chapter 3 -- Parabellum (2019) 89% – .40 million (8.66 million total)Avengers: Endgame (2019) 94% – .80 million (4.36 million total)Pokémon Detective Pikachu (2019) 68% – .98 million (7.40 million total)Booksmart (2019) 96% – .57 million (.81 million total)
