He was raised in the Jedi Temple on Coruscant and began his training sometime before or during the Clone Wars. Hidden after the fall of the Old Republic, his memories of the ensuing two decades become hazy. This new intel rewrites our perception of Grogu as he is not quite the infant we assumed him to be. Although younglings were brought to the Order very early in their lives — Ahsoka herself was only 3 when she began training — the longevity of Yoda s species led us to believe Grogu, at age 50, was still, essentially, a newborn. But if the Jedi deemed him old enough to be trained, he has some understanding of the wider galaxy and his place in it.We also think he plays up the childlike innocence as a defense mechanism, much like Ahsoka s suggestion that he hides his powers in order to survive.Back on the rumor front, Dawson was long associated with Ahsoka and this proved to be correct. Biehn, meanwhile, ended up playing a far more minor figure than anyone guessed. Although, we noticed the initial reports of his involvement indicated he would play a bounty hunter. A merc is not far off from that, so those early reports were also more or less true; that said, we would ve liked to see him in a more pivotal role. With the conclusion of this episode, nearly all the credible rumors have been resolved and just about everything anticipated about the season has come to pass. It means next week s episode will be something fresh and surprising. Although, we wonder if the season s established pace means another detour before reaching Tython. As it happens, the planet is nestled in the Deep Core, so it will take the Razor Crest some time to get there.Questions for the Jedi(Photo by John Wilson/© Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)While we ponder how lightspeed travel will affect the pace of the show, there are some other questions to consider. Now that the Jedi have invaded The Mandalorian, it is time to wonder about some other key Star Wars characters.Where is Sabine Wren? Is she still looking for Ezra or did she find him? If things went poorly, is she also on the hunt for Thrawn? And, perhaps more importantly, will Djarin s journey bring him into contact with her? Presumably, she ll want to be part of the Bo-Katan s liberation force. Provided Sabine is still alive, of course.Has Ahsoka Reached Out to Luke Skywalker? While we re happy to never have a Skywalker appear on The Mandalorian, one would think Ahsoka would reach out to him and offer some guidance in rebuilding the Order. Then again, considering how disastrously Luke s attempt to rebuild the Jedi will go, maybe their conversation was ill-fated. He may be the Jedi she alluded to in her parting words with Djarin, but his track record suggests he is not the person to teach Grogu. Is Ezra Fated To Teach Grogu? Considering The Mandalorian wanders in Dave Filoni s quadrant of the galaxy, it is possible Ezra is best suited to aid the child. He may also be one of the Jedi Ahsoka mentioned and his journey to become one — chronicled in Rebels — makes him a far better candidate than Luke. Granted, we always prefer Jedi with more shades of gray to their philosophy than the absolutism Luke was taught. Also, we re assuming Grogu will want to be a Jedi. The visit to Tython may show him a different Way to follow. Is Grogu Related to Yoda? Now that we know he was in the Jedi Temple, the question must be asked. Considering how rare examples of Yoda s species seem to be — Ahoska apparently never met Jedi Master Yaddle, who left the council before the Clone Wars — a direct relationship between Grogu and Yoda is likely. Also, the longevity of the species and their high midi-chlorian counts suggest they may be more directly tied to the will of the Force than anyone suspects. Once again, we look to Tython with the hope its connection to the Force will shed more light on The Mandalorian s mysteries. The Mandalorian releases new episodes each Friday on Disney+.On an Apple device? Spider-Man is swinging back into theaters anew. No, we’re not getting another franchise reboot. Instead, Sony’s separate animated feature Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is kicking off something completely different, and according to the first, all-rave reviews, it’s a fresh, funny, and groundbreaking start. Focused mostly on the Miles Morales version of Spider-Man, the movie sees him joined by other incarnations from different universes, and the result seems to be as hilariously irreverent as it is moving and sincere. Here’s what the critics are saying about Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse:Let’s dive right into the Positive-Verse:It’s pure dorky fun. Matt Singer, ScreenCrushIt’s terrific — a quick-witted entertainment, daring and familiar by turns, that also proves to be sweet, serious and irreverent in all the right doses. Justin Chang, Los Angeles TimesWait, so it s one of 2018 s highlights?Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse [is] the best animated movie of the year. Jason Guerrasio, Business InsiderThis year’s best animated movie…a great Spider-Man adventure for everybody. Susana Polo, Polygon(Photo by © Sony Pictures Animation)But did we really need another Spider-Man movie?Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse isn’t just the best Spider-Man movie to date, but it’s also better than most of the Spider-Man comics I’ve read. Edward Douglas, The Weekend Warrior[Spider-Verse] has one of the best Spider-Man movie stories ever. David Griffin, IGN MoviesIn a wide field of Spider-Mans to choose from, it is the strength of Miles Morales’ story that makes him a standout character. Susana Polo, PolygonSpider-Verse sounds like an evolution of comic-book movies. Tragic news for anyone who’s sick of superhero movies: Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse completely reinvigorates the genre. David Ehrlich, IndieWireInto the Spider-Verse translates the visual language of comics onto the big screen better than any movie since Ang Lee’s Hulk. Matt Singer, ScreenCrushFew recent films have embraced the comic book style and sensibility as wholeheartedly as Spider-Verse has, or enjoyed as fully the potential in combining the two mediums. Angie Han, MashableHow fresh is the animation style? The film’s wild and contradictory aesthetic — elements of which clash against each other like some kind of dissonant cartoon jazz — dazzlingly explodes the outmoded idea that superhero movies have to look a certain way. David Ehrlich, IndieWireThe unique and often brilliant 3D animation style is a fantastic aspect of the movie, though it does take some time to get used to. David Griffin, IGN MoviesWhile Spider-Verse is colorful, whip-fast and full of visual references to the four-color printing process and comic book sound effects, it never overwhelms. Susana Polo, Polygon(Photo by © Sony Pictures Animation)How are the multiple Spider-folk?What makes Spider-Verse an essential entry in the superhero canon is the richness of its good guys.  Brian Truitt, USA TodayI would optimistically describe [Spider-Gwen’s] role in Spider-Verse as ‘a great setup for a spin-off,’ which isn’t quite the same as saying she gets a lot of great stuff to do in this movie.  Darren Franich, Entertainment WeeklyOK, but what about the script? What distinguishes Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse in the end is that it takes its mission seriously, even when it’s being transparently silly. Justin Chang, Los Angeles Times[Phil Lord and Rodney Rothman[ have written a thoughtful, nuanced story that explores Morales’s uncertainty over whether he deserves the powers he has. Alex Abad-Santos, VoxIs there a ton of Easter Eggs and self-parody?In the same way that The LEGO Batman Movie paid homage to and even poked fun at previous portrayals, Into the Spider-Verse follows suit. David Griffin, IGN MoviesSpider-Verse often feels like a weightier, more ambitious version of The Lego Batman Movie, but it’s not all irreverent wisecracks and goofball voicework. Jesse Hassenger, AV ClubSpider-Verse is a spiritual sidequel to the Deadpool films, another holier-than-thou snarkfest inviting you to laugh at superhero tropes without ever once challenging those tropes.  Darren Franich, Entertainment Weekly

3.48.6 5月喜迎News from Westeros and Deadwood from HBO, 90210 reunion event news, Star Trek plots a new course on Nickelodeon, and more of the biggest TV news from this week.TOP STORYGoodbye, WesterosWhile HBO is well into production on one of the Game of Thrones prequel scripts it commissioned last year, one of the potential spin-off series is dead. Game of Thrones writer and co-executive producer Bryan Cogman, who has written 11 episodes of the series (including Sunday’s “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms”), confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that his spin-off is no longer in the works.“I was developing one of the successor shows with George [R.R. Martin]. George has worked with a bunch of the writers, including Jane [Goldman], whose show is being done [as a pilot]. My prequel show is not happening and will not happen. HBO decided to go a different way,” he told the publication“It is a goodbye. I am done with Westeros,” he added. “It s wonderfully bittersweet. I ll certainly miss it, but I m excited to go out on my own and try to be in the captain s chair of my own projects, armed with everything I ve learned. I ve learned more than I could possibly imagine from eight seasons of this thing. It s been wonderful to look back and watch some of the old episodes, and see some of our old friends at the premiere recently, and to know that we ve done something good. We ve done good work that people enjoy. That s all an entertainer can ever hope for. I m eager to start the next chapter, but a part of my heart will always live with Game of Thrones.”Shannen Dougherty Joins Beverly Hills, 90210 Event Series(Photo by Earl Gibson III/Getty Images)Former Beverly Hills, 90210 good girl-gone-bad Brenda Walsh will appear in Fox s six-episode event series BH90210, the network announced on Friday. Shannen Doherty, who played Brenda in the teen drama, joins her former co-stars – Jason Priestley, Jennie Garth, Ian Ziering, Gabrielle Carteris, Brian Austin Green and Tori Spelling – in the irreverent new series airing this summer. This time when the cast gets back together, it will come with a big twist: the seven former teen idols will be playing heightened versions of themselves, Fox said in an announcement. The series description promises drama inspired by the actors own real lives and relationships with each other: Having gone their separate ways since the original series ended 19 years ago, Shannen, Jason, Jennie, Ian, Gabrielle, Brian and Tori reunite when one of them suggests it’s time to get a Beverly Hills, 90210 reboot up and running. But getting it going may make for an even more delicious soap than the reboot itself. What will happen when first loves, old romances, friends, and frenemies come back together, as this iconic cast – whom the whole world watched grow up together – attempts to continue from where they left off? BH90210 will be produced by CBS Television Studios and Fox Entertainment. Doherty will executive-produce alongside Chris Alberghini, Mike Chessler, Patrick Sean Smith, Gabrielle Carteris, Jennie Garth, Brian Austin Green, Jason Priestley, Tori Spelling and Ian Ziering. The series was conceived by Alberghini, Chessler, Spelling and Garth. New Trailers, C suckersHBO has finally released the first trailer for its long- (long-, long-, long-) anticipated Deadwood continuation, titled Deadwood: The Movie. The feature-length film, which debuts May 31, will star the series’ entire original cast (Timothy Olyphant, Ian McShane, and more) and picks up 10 years after the series finale. It also includes the series’ trademark penchant for blue language, but you’ll have to wait approximately 40 seconds for the first c sucker to drop. Deadwood ran for three seasons from 2004-2006, and the stars and creator David Milch have spent the intervening 13 years fielding questions from reporters and fans about a follow-up. In just one month (and change), that follow-up film will finally be here.Other new trailers this week include:a full-length peek at DC Universe’s Swamp Thing — see it herean extended look at Hulu’s George Clooney–produced adaptation of Catch-22 — see it hereand another look at Epix’s Batman pre-prequel about the caped crusader’s butler, Pennyworth. — see it here.
Debbie Day for Rotten Tomatoes: What was it like to get back together with the Deadwood gang? What was the first day of filming like?Kim Dickens: Instead of getting the band back together, we got the c suckers back together. Day one I would consider the read through. That was pretty magical. You know, when the whole cast gets together with the producers and writers and the network, HBO. It was a remarkable experience for all of us. I m almost flushed right now while I think about it, and while I relive the first moments of that table read. I mean, everybody was overwhelmed with tears and laughter and joy. We just launched right into it. Actually, the opening lines of the movie are pretty great. They re delivered by Calamity Jane and me. She almost couldn t get through those first few lines without having a lump in her throat.I think it was a gift to us as well. I m glad. I hope the fans will feel really satisfied with it, and I think they will. Day one of filming I wasn t there. Day three of filming I was there, and I was also there on the final day of filming. Before we filmed I was able to walk around [the set] and I was actually on the ranch and doing fittings and stuff. So we were getting geared up to it, but my first scene and first day on set was in the Bella Union, in Joanie Stubbs bedroom, in the bed with the mother of characters. So it was pretty much baptism by fire, right back in it. I couldn t have been happier. It actually happens to be one of my favorite scenes in the movie. I mean, I have so many favorite scenes in the movie, but that one just felt so quintessentially Deadwood, you know?(Photo by Warrick Page/HBO)Most actors aren’t able to revisit a character, but in the age of so many reboots and revivals it’s happening more frequently. What has that experience been like for you? Do you like being in her shoes again? It was great to be back in her shoes again, walking around in the muck and the mud, and donning the top hat again. It was remarkable, really. Ever since it was unceremoniously canceled after three seasons there had been rumors of, Well, we re going to do two movies. They talked about two movies forever. And then the rumors would come up that they were trying to do that, trying to do that, but it s a long ways off. And then there would be rumors at times through the years, Oh, absolutely not, it s never happening. So it was a bummer. We all stayed in touch. We all cherished the experience of Deadwood and working with David Milch and working with each other and production, everybody. Everybody was incredible on that — the production designer, the costume designer, cinematographers. … More than just hoping we d get to go back to it, which is part of it, we hoped that we d get to finish the story in a way.It was such a beautiful piece of art and with such a passionate fan base that I thought it was a real disservice for HBO to cancel it. Of course there are so many determining factors that make those decisions. I m not a studio, I m not a network, so whatever they do is beyond my understanding, but from an artistic point of view, and if you re embracing a show like that for what it is, which is a creative gem, then I think you owe it to the audience who you ve asked to stay dedicated. And so finally, 12 years later, we re doing it. It really felt surreal, I think. it was so long. The story is told on our faces; it s been so many years.(Photo by Warrick Page/HBO)As a refresher, can you remind us where we left your character and where we re picking up with her now?You know what? I was rewatching the series, which was just a delight to do. I think I left off — I d started a school. … Joanie Stubbs was making a more respectable woman of herself. I think Stubbs always had a reverence for what is not sinful, and always felt like she could not even get near anything that was not shameful. So to see her make those strides and to do something of worth and purpose shows such a terrific growth for her. And then when we find her 10 to 12 years later, she flipped back on her heels a bit, I guess you could say She s fallen back a bit into addiction, a little under water. And then we ll watch her journey from there. She s lost Cy Tolliver. She s regained The Bella Union. The price is just good. It s run down, as is she.She s still a woman of means, though. Right?Yeah, she s still running the joint. She s not at her best and has taken some hard times. Whatever support systems she had, be it positive and negative at times, is now gone. The language has always been its own character in the show. Did returning to that feel the same? Or did you have a new view of it?It did feel exactly the same. It s the same poetry. I believe it s metered, actually. It comes from David Milch and his genius and his staff that he works with. At first it was a little like, Oh, god! I ve gotta get those muscles loose again, because there s been nothing else like that in the interim. When you’ve got any sort of Shakespeare or any sort of heightened dialogue it sounds a little daunting at first. And then I started rewatching the series, and it s kind of like riding a bike. When I got the script, I knew the character. I knew the language. It had just been a long time. But it s so beautiful. if you re familiar with it, you already know. I didn t have to relearn it. It was already still in my muscles. Is there any concern about attracting new fans to the movie? Not for me as an actor. I m much more artistically minded in it. You certainly don t like to go and feel like you have to lay down some exposition or hand-hold your audience, because we never did that. It was mostly a piece where it was so compelling that audience leaned in. And if they were getting it or not, they were still leaning in, and finally they just started to feel the love and humanity of the whole thing.I would hope that our movie does the same thing with the richness and the characters and the richness of the storytelling. That people will be tuning in and following to it as an experience even if they don t know the characters yet. And then how delightful would it be for a new audience to see it and get to go back and see the other stuff? I think that would be very exciting for them. So hopefully it will work the way it s supposed to work. I feel like HBO had a desire for it to speak to the old fans and a new audience. I think they would want that. I m sure that s a business model that would be desirable for them. It could do both. It’s not very often that a movie inspires people to go back and watch the series.Yeah, it s remarkable. Our storytelling was in the episodic format. It was a very patient form of storytelling. It was in the beginning of what I think is the golden age of television, when it sort of turned that corner with The Sopranos. We were right there with it. It offered up a very nuanced form of storytelling and character development. No hand holding. And to be pushed into a two-hour format to tell a long-form story was, I m sure, tricky.I said to Robin Weigert last night, Look, if they want to see Deadwood as a radio play or an animated series, we ll do it. We ll do whatever form.”Deadwood: The Movie airs Friday, May 31 at 8 p.m. on HBO.Like this? Subscribe to our newsletter and get more features, news, and guides in your inbox every week.

An episode does have a name after all:  Episode 2: "A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms" 87%. The name highlights one of our favorite moments from the newest season 8 episode of HBO s Game of Thrones, which aired on Sunday night.1. “I’ll Get Right On It” (More Than You Know, Gendry)(Photo by HBO)We’ve seen a bit of this in the trailer. Arya (Maisie Williams) says, “I know Death. He’s got many faces. I look forward to seeing this one.” What we didn’t know is that she was showing off in front of Gendry (Joe Dempsie).Persuading him to stop trying to convince her not to fight, Arya starts throwing daggers at a post. They land in a staggeringly perfect formation, and Gendry – well, if he wasn’t aroused by her presence before, he’s clearly sputtering over this display. So no, Arya’s whole “I know Death” speech wasn’t the highlight here. The highlight was Gendry’s worshipful response.2. “How Do You Know There Is an ‘Afterwards’”(Photo by Helen Sloan/HBO)Jaime (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) apologizes to Bran (Isaac Hempstead Wright) for trying to murder him. Bran gets it, though: The Fates had their way so that Bran could be this all-seeing wizard of uncomfortable stares. Jaime appreciates that Bran didn’t rat him out for that tower push, but what’s next? Bran will not confirm or deny that there is an afterwards. And for that, we think he’s being a bit of an asshole – the conversation was a highlight, but Bran is being a bit of a dick (more on that later).3. “What Happens Afterwards?”(Photo by Helen Sloan/HBO)There’s that word again, but let’s give a nod first to the scene in which Ser Jorah (Iain Glen) stands up for Tyrion (Peter Dinklage) and, it becomes apparent, suggests that Daenerys (Emilia Clarke) make nice with Sansa (Sophie Turner). Daenerys takes his advice. She visits Sansa, is surprised by Lord Royce’s (Rupert Vansittart) respectful greeting, and has that awkward “I’m going to try diplomacy” smile on her face – it makes everyone uncomfortable, but then Sansa, truthspeaker, diffuses that weirdness by telling Daenerys that she was as mistaken about Cersei’s true intentions as Tyrion was. (Deflect blame much, Dany?) Daenerys likes it when people are honest, so a point to Sansa. Then, Daenerys notes how Jon Snow (Kit Harington) has derailed her own plans to take the Iron Throne. She loves him, she says. Point to Daenerys. But, really, who’s keeping score? Daenerys and Sansa are having a real moment – kicking and screaming inside probably, but real.4. “I Want to Fight for Winterfell  Lady Sansa”(Photo by Helen Sloan/HBO)Give it up for Theon (Alfie Allen), showing what repentance means (and that Sansa has some power in the room with the queen). Sansa is clearly moved by seeing her father’s former ward again – man parts or no.5. “My little Crow”(Photo by Helen Sloan/HBO)Jon’s reunion with Edd (Ben Crompton), Tormund (Kristofer Hivju), and Beric (Richard Dormer) is like a little amuse-bouche before the war. Tormund: “The big woman still here?” Yes, Tormund, the big woman is here. Will they consummate their thing?6. “I Don’t Know – No One’s Ever Tried”(Photo by HBO)So, the meeting of all of the principal characters (minus Cersei and Euron) at Winterfell had a few spectacular moments within it.First, “He’s tried many times with many Three-Eyed Ravens.” The “many Three-Eyed Ravens” part is baffling: This is a position that needs to be filled every few thousand years? I thought I’d read my histories, but the idea of “many Three-Eyed Ravens” is news to me. And Bran doesn t know because no one s ever tried ? Is the Three-Eyed Raven only seeing the past these days?Daenerys follows Ser Jorah’s advice and publicly declares her faith in and need for Tyrion. Haven’t we all felt like Tyrion at some point in our careers? Sometimes you just need a little PDA to make everything right.Theon steps up with a pseudo-apology to Bran, telling him he took the castle from him, so now he’s willing to face the Night King with Bran to make amends. Good luck with that, Theon. (We have the sinking feeling that we’re about to get a lesson in just deserts.)“We’re all going to die,” Tormund says, which gives voice to that sinking feeling. “But,” he says casting a glance over at his lady love, Brienne, “at least we die together.” New world order question: Tormund’s behavior is “creepy,” not “romantic”? I try to put myself in Brienne’s shoes – they’re big, that’s all I have to say. Finally, Tyrion insisting that Bran tell him his story is hilarious: “If only we were trapped in a castle, in the middle of winter with nowhere to go.” Tyrion surely knows that Bran may not make it – clearly Tyrion is thinking about his future book deal.7. “Do You Want to Grow Old in This Place?”(Photo by Helen Sloan/HBO)A friend summed up the black experience in the Seven Kingdoms: “Can we talk about Winterfell s reaction to black folks comin up in there!!?!” Though I feel Grey Worm’s (Jacob Anderson) intent when he asks Missandei (Nathalie Emmanuel) if she wants “to grow old in this place” and then also  her wish to see Naath again, I also kind of feel like the Seven Kingdoms needs to be integrated. I wish she might have said something along the lines of I think we need to bring Naath to the Seven Kingdoms. Too bad about those dead wights walking. We need a vacation in Dorne to remind us what multiculturalism is. (Here’s hoping the prequel mixes it up lots more.)8. “And Now Our Watch Begins”Jon and Sam are on the ramparts having a – Wait, what? Where the hell did Ghost come from? Don’t try to distract us with clever dialogue from Edd. A direwolf just magicked up in here at Winterfell! That was a reunion we were waiting for, and it occurred off screen? Was there an online short we missed? A Ghost s Journey ?#GameofThrones Ghost showing up in this episode like pic.twitter.com/GWLD8lbamu TAMARA (@Bts_ARMYXOXOX) April 22, 20199. “We’re Probably Going to Die Soon”(Photo by HBO)“Seduced” may be a strong word to describe how Arya asked Gendry to have sex. She kind of insists that he service her before they maybe possibly die because of his shoddy blacksmithing skills on her new spear. Kidding. Honestly, it was a powerful female moment: She stated the facts plainly (they may all die) and said what she wanted (to have sex before that happens). He was free to participate or go on his way. And that is what consent looks like, folks.10. “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms”(Photo by HBO)This episode has been a lovefest between Jaime and Brienne. She vouched for him when the council would have tossed him out, imprisoned him, or straight-up executed him. He scored points with viewers in telling her, “I’ll be honored to serve under your command – if you’ll have me.” Then later – facing an uncertain night with a dead foe – he gets into his cups and knights her. Brienne’s moist eyes reflected all of us in that moment. (If not you, then you have a black heart and only watch for boobs and zombies.)Pod – maker of sympathetic faces, singer of songs. ♥ him! Tormund – a suckler of teats. We’ll leave that there.“In the name of the Warrior, I charge you to be brave. In the name of the Father, I charge you to be just. In the name of the Mother, I charge you to defend the innocent. Arise, Brienne of Tarth, a knight of the Seven Kingdoms,” Ser Jaime said, dubbing her with a sword.11. “I Wish You Good Fortune, Cousin”The one-on-one Ser Jorah had with little she-bear Lyanna Mormont (Bella Ramsey) went exactly as expected, with him trying to convince the tween Lady of House Mormont to retire to the crypt: “You’re the future of the House.” She, absolutely refusing: “I pledged to fight for the North, and I will fight.”Then, you know, Sam (John Bradley) interrupts to give Ser Jorah his family’s Valyrian steel sword, Heartsbane.12. “My Name – My Real Name – Is Aegon Targaryen”Jon’s in the crypt making brooding look good, when Daenerys comes in. “Who’s that?” she asks. “Mom,” he (essentially) says. He tells her the story of Lyanna and Rhaegar, and Daenerys is not exactly happy to have her lover be another contender for the Iron Throne. 2. THIS WEEK IN REPLACING DICAPRIO, PART 2: SAM ROCKWELL AND RICHARD JEWELL(Photo by Fox Searchlight)DiCaprio had also previously been attached to star in Clint Eastwood s next film as director, Richard Jewell (previously titled The Ballad of Richard Jewell), but his role has now gone to Sam Rockwell instead. The title refers to a security guard who discovered a suspicious backpack bomb at the 1996 Atlanta Summer Olympics. Rockwell will play Jewell s defense attorney, and the title role is going to Paul Walter Hauser, who was arguably the breakout star of I, Tonya. (At one point, that role would have gone to Jonah Hill, when he was physically much heavier.) The cast for the film expanded even further this week, though, as Kathy Bates will also be co-starring as Jewell s mother. In related news, Paul Walter Hauser also signed on this week for a lower profile film, Silk Road, which is also based on a true crime story.3. NETFLIX ADAPTING HIT VIDEO GAME THE DIVISION WITH JESSICA CHASTAIN AND JAKE GYLLENHAAL(Photo by JA, Jason Smith/Everett Collection)There are so many Marvel movies (over 30 if you include the various Sony and Fox movies) that it s rare to find a big star who hasn t appeared in at least one of them. Jessica Chastain co-starred as an alien in last week s Dark Phoenix, and Jake Gyllenhaal will play Mysterio in next month s Spider-Man: Far from Home, and we now know that they will both headline an upcoming video game movie. Both of them actually joined the movie based on Tom Clancy s The Division three years ago, but that was so long ago that, until this week, it didn t seem like a sure thing that either was still attached. The big reveal this week is that Netflix has stepped in to produce and distribute The Division, which will be the next film directed by David Leitch, who s coming off Certified Fresh action hits in Atomic Blonde (78%) and Deadpool 2 (83%). Tom Clancy s The Division is an action role-playing game set in New York City following a mass genocide from a viral attack.4. NETFLIX ENLISTS COCO WRITER FOR THEIR TAKE ON CHRONICLES OF NARNIA (Photo by Walt Disney courtesy Everett Collection)Ostensibly inspired by the box office successes of both the Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings movies, Walden Media started adapting C.S. Lewis The Chronicles of Narnia in 2005 with The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe. That first movie was a box office smash (5 million globally), but the second (The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian) and third (The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader) both dropped by nearly half with 9 million and 5 million, respectively. (The third film also dipped the franchise into Rotten territory.) Disney released the first two films, and Fox the third, but nine years later, Netflix now has the rights. To get things started, Netflix has hired screenwriter Matthew Aldrich (who cowrote Pixar s Coco, Certified Fresh at 97%) to work on their ambitious adaptations of Lewis seven novels into both movies and at least one series.5. MELISSA MCCARTHY S ST. VINCENT REUNION THE STARLING (Photo by JA/Everett Collection)Like many comic actors, Melissa McCarthy frequently dips her cinematic toes into more dramatic fare (like last year s Can You Ever Forgive Me?, Certified Fresh at 98%). McCarthy arguably started doing this in 2014 with the dramedy St. Vincent (Certified Fresh 77%), co-starring Bill Murray, Naomi Watts, and Chris O Dowd. St. Vincent was directed by Ted Melfi (Hidden Figures), who had planned to direct a psychiatric dramedy called Fruit Loops (with Woody Harrelson) next, until Disney recently let it go as part of their new Fox plans. Quickly shifting gears, Melfi will instead next direct a tragic comedy called The Starling, with McCarthy and O Dowd reuniting from St. Vincent as a married couple struggling with grief.6. BO BURNHAM WILL WRITE THE NEW SESAME STREET MOVIE S SONGS  (Photo by Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection)Although January is historically seen as a dump month, studios have more recently been enjoying success with the Martin Luther King Jr. Day weekend in mid-January (Glass in 2019, Hidden Figures in 2017, Ride Along 2 in 2016, etc.). Warner Bros. is developing a Sesame Street musical starring Anne Hathaway, and they chose a release date of January 15, 2021 (which would have been MLK s 92nd birthday) a while back. Filming isn t expected to start until April of next year, and this week, we found out who will be writing the new Sesame Street songs. That role has gone to comedian-turned-writer-director Bo Burnham, who is coming off a great 2018 after his award-winning feature directorial debut with teen drama Eighth Grade (Certified Fresh at 99%). As pointed out in this piece, Burnham made an early mark on YouTube by performing raunchy songs like My Whole Family Thinks I m Gay, but it s pretty obvious that his Sesame Street songs won t be like that. Or so we assume.7. CLASSIC HORROR FILM BLACK CHRISTMAS GETTING REMADE (AGAIN)(Photo by MGM courtesy Everett Collection)Possibly more than any other genre, horror movies are particularly ripe for remakes, mostly because they can be made relatively affordably with a high potential box office return. In 2006, one such remake was Black Christmas (Rotten at 15%), based on the influential early 1974 slasher of the same title (Fresh at 71%). Both films featured young actresses as sorority house members who later became more famous: Margot Kidder (Superman) in the original film, and Mary Elizabeth Winstead (10 Cloverfield Lane, TV s Fargo) in the remake. Blumhouse Productions and Universal Pictures are rushing to remake Black Christmas again, and the lead actress this time around will be Imogen Poots, who co-starred in 2016 s Green Room. We say rushing because Universal has scheduled Black Christmas for just six months from now (December 13, 2019), up against the Jumanji sequel. The updated film will be directed by Sophia Takal, who co-wrote the script with April Wolfe, which gives the remake a unique female perspective that might be exactly the jolt it needs.Rotten Ideas2. KEVIN HART REMAKING BILL MURRAY S SCROOGED (Photo by Universal Pictures, Paramount Pictures)Bill Murray s zombie comedy The Dead Don t Die is in theaters this weekend, and he s all over The Weekly Ketchup as well. This is the third story with Murray connections, following Ghostbusters 3 and The Starling (which is a reunion project for St. Vincent, in which Bill Murray starred). Although they don t always hit financially, remakes remain popular with Hollywood because many of them can be made relatively affordably (compared to say, superhero movies), but still have name brand familiarity. In 1988, Bill Murray starred in Scrooged (Fresh at 70%), which was itself basically a remake (more specificially a reimagination) of Charles Dickens A Christmas Carol. Well, that remake is going to get a remake, because Kevin Hart is producing and is expected to star in a Scrooged remake for Paramount Pictures. The Scrooged remake does not yet have a screenwriter or director, so it s probably at least a few Christmases away.1. ANIMATED SPICE GIRLS MOVIE IN THE WORKS(Photo by Columbia Pictures courtesy Everett Collection)Last year marked the 20th anniversary of the 1998 Spice Girls movie, Spice World (Rotten at 35%), which unironically had absolutely nothing to do with Frank Herbert s Dune (melange jokes for the win). As with all mortals, time marches on even for the Spice Girls, but Paramount Pictures has figured out a way to make another Spice Girls movie: animation. All five original Spice Girls members are signed on to star in the new animated film, which will feature both their hit songs and new songs as well. The Spice Girls movie is part of a new Paramount Animation slate that aims to release two movies a year, starting in 2020 with The SpongeBob Movie: It s a Wonderful Sponge (5/22/2020) and the comic book adaptation Rumble (7/31/2020). Paramount is also still developing an animated Mighty Mouse movie. This story isn t the week s Rotten Idea for those films, however, but because of Spice World s Tomatometer score.Like this? David Fincher’s first movie since 2014’s Gone Girl is a throwback to Old Hollywood, even recapturing some of the look and sound of films from the 1940s. Mank is also a passion project, a biopic scripted by his father, Jack Fincher, and focused on screenwriter Herman Mankiewicz and the creation of Citizen Kane.According to the first reviews, the movie won’t exactly go down in history as famously as the Orson Welles classic it’s about, but with great performances by Gary Oldman as the titular protagonist and Amanda Seyfried, plus its unique retro aesthetic, it’s sure to be very popular with Netflix subscribers and awards organizations alike. Here’s what critics are saying about Mank:How does it compare to David Fincher s other films? It’s one of David Fincher’s finest works.  Eric Eisenberg, Cinema BlendOne of his most personal – and most beautiful… it would be tempting to say this is his Citizen Kane.  James Mottram, South China Morning PostHis best movie since The Social Network and one of his most audacious filmmaking experiments since Benjamin Button.  Eric Kohn, IndieWireThe film is pure Fincher — technical and artistic mastery, combined with a script that is perhaps too cerebral or self-referential for many viewers.  J. Don Birnam, Splash ReportMank is, markedly, the least-enjoyable film he’s ever directed.  Nick Newman, The Film StageWill fans of classic movies like it?Mank is a tale of Old Hollywood that’s more steeped in Old Hollywood than just about any movie you’ve seen, and the effect is to lend it a dizzying time-machine splendor. Owen Gleiberman, VarietyThe most gorgeous piece of cinema you ll see anywhere…meant to match the look and feel of its era, as if it s eight decades ago and you just bought a ticket. Peter Travers, ABC NewsThis is a film that transports you back in time. Chris Evangelista, SlashfilmCatnip for devotees of Turner Classic Movies… Mank [is] necessary, if not entirely fulfilling, viewing for film lovers. Alonso Duralde, The Wrap(Photo by Netflix)Will it have broad appeal?Mank’s premise and subject matter would seem to appeal only to a cinephile or fan of a bygone era, but there also lies powerful themes of addiction, genius, collaboration, betrayal, and painful political home-truths. Lewis Knight, Daily MirrorThere’s a way that it’s almost more inside baseball than it needed to be. And that could limit its appeal. Owen Gleiberman, VarietyIt will not be everyone’s cup of tea… a film about people sitting around talking, discussing scripts, or even intrigue, is not superficially appealing. J. Don Birnam, Splash ReportDo you need to see Citizen Kane first? While seeing Citizen Kane before Mank isn’t mandatory, you’ll have a greater appreciation for Fincher’s craft and technique when you can clearly see how he’s echoing the style of Welles’ seminal picture. Matt Goldberg, ColliderThere is some pleasure in spotting the winks and legends and shout-outs, but… you have to give the unfamiliar viewer reasons to care. By the end of Mank, even I wasn’t sure any of this mattered all that much. Jason Bailey, The PlaylistBut does it honor that film s legacy? It only enhances one’s appreciation of the genius 1941 movie at the center of its plot. Eric Eisenberg, Cinema BlendThose looking for a movie about the development of Citizen Kane will likely be disappointed and would be better suited watching the 1999 TV movie RKO 281. Matt Goldberg, Collider[It] never fully nails how the dream of Kane came to be. Owen Gleiberman, Variety(Photo by Netflix)How is Gary Oldman s central performance? One of the greatest performances of his career – which is a statement that should be taken with extreme weight. Eric Eisenberg, Cinema BlendA performance every bit as immersive as his Oscar-winning Winston Churchill in Darkest Hour. James Mottram, South China Morning PostAs is usually the case with the actor, he grabs hold of the role and shakes the life out of it. Chris Evangelista, SlashfilmOldman is giving one of his more engaging performances in recent memory. Alonso Duralde, The WrapSomebody younger should have portrayed the Oscar-winning screenwriter.  This isn’t to take anything away from Oldman’s performance, but to each their own. Danielle Solzman, Solzy at the MoviesWhat about Amanda Seyfried?Amanda Seyfried is a wonderful scene-stealer. Eric Eisenberg, Cinema BlendIt’s the best thing she’s done in her career. James Mottram, South China Morning PostAmanda Seyfried, as Marion Davies, is by far the most human presence, the closest to a lifeblood. Nick Newman, The Film StageHer awards-worthy performance is likely to score her a well earned Oscar nomination. Erik Anderson, AwardsWatchHer awards-worthy performance is likely to score her a well earned Oscar nomination. Lewis Knight, Daily MirrorRyan FujitaniHow is the late Jack Fincher s screenplay?Jack Fincher’s script is brilliant, both in structure and detail. Eric Eisenberg, Cinema BlendThe script is punchy and not afraid to lean into melodrama, and Fincher is clearly having fun bringing his father’s words to life. Chris Evangelista, SlashfilmFincher’s script is wildly uneven, however, but when it hits, it really hits. Jason Bailey, The PlaylistWhat the script never quite cracks is the machinery of the creative process. Leah Greenblatt, Entertainment WeeklyPerhaps it’s inevitable that a screenplay about the screenwriter of Citizen Kane could never live up to its subject’s greatest work. Anna Menta, DeciderHow does the film look? It’s possible to go into a kind of trance at just how beautiful this film looks. Peter Bradshaw, GuardianThe style opens the doors to all varieties of callbacks to the specific and memorable aesthetics of Citizen Kane, instantly making you fall back into the time period. Eric Eisenberg, Cinema BlendYour eyes may see the black and white color as too crisp and intelligible to fully believe this is an 80-year-old movie, but Fincher and his team come deliriously close. J. Don Birnam, Splash ReportThe commitment to immersing us into a 1930s/1940s mood is impressive but I wish cinematographer Erik Messerschmidt had adopted the classic Academy ratio of the time as well. Erik Anderson, AwardsWatchWhy does [Fincher] shoot digitally, on the Red Monstro Monochrome, rather than 35mm, giving the picture an unmistakable (and sometimes unfortunate) digital sheen? Jason Bailey, The Playlist(Photo by Gisele Schmidt/Netflix)And how does it sound? The audio here is not what you’re used to hearing from a Netflix movie… it sounds like the type of audio you’d hear were you watching Mank in some grand movie palace. Chris Evangelista, SlashfilmTrent Reznor and Atticus Ross imbue their score with that same level of commitment to the period that’s unlike anything they’ve ever done. Erik Anderson, AwardsWatchAtticus Ross and Trent Reznor also deliver a seamlessly blended and moody score befitting the origin story of Welles’s directorial masterpiece. Lewis Knight, Daily MirrorBenny Goldman could have written the score, which nattily punctuates the beats on the type of dialogue Mankiewicz was famous for. Fionnuala Halligan, Screen InternationalIs there enough here to care about?Mank left me oddly cold despite its magnificent craftsmanship  The emotional punch never lands, and so while Mank has no problem earning the viewer’s respect, it struggles to find our adoration. Matt Goldberg, ColliderFor all its crisp and glitz its relevant post-capitalist concerns and lament for the theatrical experience Mank is without emotion. Robert Daniels, IGNA movie that mostly unfolds at a distance — esthetically ravishing but emotionally remote. David Rooney, Hollywood Reporter(Photo by Netflix)Will Mank still rank high on end-of-year lists? It’s one of the year’s best films. Erik Anderson, AwardsWatchOne of the very best movies of the year. Peter Travers, ABC NewsUnquestionably one of the best of 2020. Eric Eisenberg, Cinema BlendWithout a doubt one, of the year’s very best. Lindsey Bahr, Associated PressIt’s Netflix’s richest production to date. Hannah Woodhead, Little White LiesMank‘s bad parts don’t outweigh its copious good parts, but it’s not quite the grand slam cinephiles were hoping for. Anna Menta, DeciderMank is still a treat; for those looking for more, we always have Citizen Kane to fall back on, after all. Fionnuala Halligan, Screen InternationalMank opens in limited release theaters on November 13, 2020, then heads to Netflix on December 4, 2020.On an Apple device? 亚博BOB This week s Ketchup brings you more headlines from the world of film development news, covering movies based on true stories like Boston Strangler, I Wanna Dance with Somebody, Oppenheimer, and The Woman King. This WEEK S TOP STORYCILLIAN MURPHY CONFIRMED AS CHRISTOPHER NOLAN S OPPENHEIMER (Photo by Everett Collection)Throughout Hollywood s long history of making movies about real life figures, it s a lingering complaint that actors frequently do not look like the real life figures that they are portraying. For Oppenheimer, about the life of the father of the atomic bomb, J. Robert Oppenheimer, director Christopher Nolan appears to be sidestepping such criticisms by casting frequent collaborator Cillian Murphy, who played his Scarecrow in Batman Begins, as the titular scientist, and the resemblance is sort of uncanny. Universal Pictures has scheduled Oppenheimer for release on July 21, 2023, which puts it around the same late July slot when many of Christopher Nolan s films have been released (Interstellar was on 7/21/2017, and The Dark Knight Rises was on 7/20/2012). Oppenheimer will start filming in early 2022 on IMAX cameras and with a budget of over 0 million. In related news, the Peaky Blinders movie, also starring Cillian Murphy, was confirmed this week to start filming in 18 months (in 2023), after the show s sixth and final season wraps.Other Top Headlines1. KEIRA KNIGHTLEY TO STAR IN SERIAL KILLER TRUE STORY BOSTON STRANGLER(Photo by Barry Wetcher/©Warner Bros.)Although several others have possibly eclipsed his notoriety, the argument can be made that the early 1960s murders ascribed to The Boston Strangler left an indelible mark on the 1960s, including the 1968 film The Boston Strangler (Fresh at 86%), starring Tony Curtis. Filmmaker Ridley Scott is set to produce a new film called Boston Strangler via his Scott Free Productions for 20th Century Studios, and Keira Knightley is the film s first announced star as Loretta McLaughlin, the first reporter to connect the murders and break the story of the Strangler. Writer/director Matt Ruskin (Crown Heights, Certified Fresh at 77%) will adapt the Boston Strangler screenplay and direct when filming starts on location in Boston in December, 2021. The role of Alberto DeSalvo, the Boston Strangler himself, has not yet been cast.2. WHITNEY HOUSTON BIOPIC CASTS THREE KEY REAL LIFE ROLES (Photo by ©A24)The Whitney Houston biopic I Wanna Dance with Somebody (12/23/2022) is now filming at locations in Boston and New Jersey, but until this week, several key roles in Houston s life remained unfilled (or at least, unannounced). Let s start with Robyn Crawford, Houston s longtime assistant, who will be played by Nafessa Williams (Thunder on TV s Black Lightining), after the role s first actress, Moses Ingram, recently parted ways with the role. From the same announcement, we also now know that Whitney s parents, John and Cissy Houston, will be played by Clarke Peters (Lester Freamon from HBO s The Wire) and Tamara Tunie (Dr. Melinda Warner from TV s Law Order: Special Victims Unit). That news all came out on Monday, and then yesterday, we learned that the role of Houston s daughter Bobbi Kristina Brown will be played by 15-year-old Brian Danielle Singleton, who played the young Octavia Spencer in the superhero movie Thunder Force. Comedian Eddie Murphy will also be a character in I Wanna Dance with Somebody, and he will be played by Jimmie Fails, who co-starred in and co-wrote The Last Black Man in San Francisco (Certified Fresh at 92%). Those five actors join other already announced cast members Naomi Ackie (Whitney Houston), Ashton Sanders (Bobby Brown), and Stanley Tucci (Clive Davis).3. SAM RAIMI PRODUCING DYSTOPIAN THRILLER BOY KILLS WORLD (Photo by ©Universal courtesy Everett Collection)Filmmaker Sam Raimi is currently deep into post-production on his return to Marvel as the director of the sequel Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (3/25/2022), but that isn t preventing him from occasionally producing other directors projects. Raimi s production company is just one of the partners on a new dystopian thriller called Boy Kills World, which will soon start filming on location in South Africa. Bill Skarsgard (Pennywise in IT) will play the title character, Boy, a deaf mute with a vibrant imagination who escapes into the jungle when his family is murdered. Samara Weaving (Ready or Not) will also co-star as an assassin in Boy Kills World, which will be the feature film debut of German filmmaker Moritz Mohr.4. TILDA SWINTON AND GEORGE MACKAY LEAD POST-APOCALYPTIC MUSICAL IN THE END (Photo by Olivier Huitel/Avalon Photoshot, Elizabeth Goodenough/Everett Collection)Sometimes, we are blessed with bizarre but amusing coincidences in the movie news world. For example, we just learned some big news about Christopher Nolan s Oppenheimer, which of course centers on a scientist who feared the end of the world. This same week, we also learned that director Joshua Oppenheimer no relation to J. Robert (we think) is preparing his next movie, and it will be a post-apocalyptic musical about the last human family on Earth. Titled The End, this will be Oppenheimer s first narrative feature; he previously directed the Oscar-nominated documentaries The Act of Killing (Certified Fresh at 95%) and The Look of Silence (Certified Fresh at 96%). Tilda Swinton will star in The End with George MacKay (1918) and Stephen Graham (Al Capone in HBO s Boardwalk Empire) as the last human family when filming starts sometime in 2022.5. THREE RISING STARS JOIN AFRICAN HISTORICAL EPIC THE WOMAN KING (Photo by ©IFC Films)We haven t seen many historical epics in recent years, but there was a time when they regularly racked up end-of-year awards and critical acclaim. One notable project still in the works despite this apparent downward trend, though, is The Woman King, about the Kingdom of Dahomey in the 18th and 19th centuries, which had an all-female military unit that may have inspired the Dora Milaje in Marvel s Black Panther. We ve known for a while that the lead role will be played by Viola Davis, and recent weeks have also seen the announcement of other actors like Lashana Lynch (Captain Marvel) and John Boyega as King Ghazo. This week, the film s ensemble cast was further filled out by three rising phenoms in Jayme Lawson (Bella Real in the upcoming The Batman), Hero Fiennnes Tiffin (the nephew of Ralph Fiennes) and Masali Baduza (BBC s Noughts Crosses). The Woman King will be directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood (The Old Guard, The Secret Life of Bees) for Sony/TriStar.6. EMMA STONE PRODUCING A24 HORROR I SAW THE TV GLOW (Photo by Jason Smith/Everett Collection)There are two companies that are now arguably most identified with horror namely Blumhouse and A24 and the types of horror stories that these two companies produce also couldn t be more different. Blumhouse does big concept horror like Get Out, The Purge, and The Invisible Man, while A24 produces films that fall into either indie or folk horror (or both) like The Witch, Hereditary, and Midsommar. Emma Stone s Fruit Tree production company is now collaborating with A24 on a new horror film called I Saw the TV Glow about two teenage outcasts who bond over their shared love of a scary television show, but the boundary between TV and reality begins to blur after it is mysteriously canceled. I Saw the TV Glow will be the second feature film from writer/director Jane Schoenbrun, whose We re All Going to the World s Fair (Fresh at 88%) debuted at the Sundance Film Festival this year.7. GREEN BOOK DIRECTOR ADAPTING FRENCH TIME TRAVEL MOVIE (Photo by Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection)To his credit, few people probably could have ever guessed that Peter Farrelly, the director of Dumb and Dumber and The Three Stooges, would go ont to direct a film that would win three Academy Awards, including Best Picture, but that s exactly what he did with Green Book (Certified  Fresh at 77%) in 2018. With that in mind, perhaps it shouldn t be so surprising that Farrelly is now negotiating to direct an English language remake of the 2006 French time travel drama Seras-tu La. That film was about a 60-year-old widower in 2006 who gets the chance to travel 30 years backwards in time to attempt to prevent the death of his wife in 1976. In the meantime, Farrelly is currently filming The Greatest Beer Run Ever, based on the true story of a man who traveled to Vietnam in 1967 to visit his friends who were actively fighting in the Vietnam War.8. JAKE GYLLENHAAL TO STAR IN ADAPTATION OF PROPHET FROM DEADPOOL CO-CREATOR (Photo by Anne Marie Fox/TM & ©Copyright Fox Searchlight)Much can be argued about comic books of the late 1980s and early 1990s, but for the actual writers and artists who create comics, it all started to change in 1992 when a handful of the most popular young creators broke away from DC and Marvel to form their own company, called Image Comics. One of those Image co-founders was Rob Liefeld, who, during his time at Marvel, co-created Deadpool. For several years now, Liefeld has been working on getting movie deals for his own creations, and it sounds like one of them will finally start filming soon. Jake Gyllenhaal is now signed to star in Prophet, based on Liefeld s comic book of the same title, to be directed by former Marvel Studios stunt coordinator-turned director Sam Hargrave (Extraction, Fresh at 67%). Gyllenhaal will star as John Prophet, a man conscripted by Germans near the end of World War II and subjected to scientific experiments that gave him superhuman strength (basically like Captain America, if he were a Nazi) who then wakes up 20 years later in 1965. In the comics, John Prophet wears a purple-and-gold outfit with a haircut that has to be seen to be comprehended, but Jake Gyllenhaal s movie look will probably be different. On an Apple device?
