In this episode of our ‘21 Most Memorable Moments’ series, The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers actor Andy Serkis recalls auditioning for Peter Jackson, creating the sound of Gollum, and shooting the movie s most chilling scene. VOTE FOR THIS MOMENT IN OUR 21 MOST MEMORABLE MOVIE MOMENTS POLLTHE MOVIE: The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002) 95%The Two Towers was the film that proved Fellowship wasn t a fluke – that director Peter Jackson s Lord of the Rings trilogy was going to be a landmark event, with each entry equal to the last. It showed that Jackson and his fellow writers had the skill to match their gargantuan ambition. A year after Fellowship stunned moviegoers, the world once again joined a large collection of characters on their journeys across Middle-earth – Gandalf the (now) White, Sam and Frodo, Aragorn, and the rest – but it was one character, with two natures, who would steal the show. Andy Serkis s Gollum, only glimpsed in Fellowship, took center stage in The Two Towers, and Serkis s performance, along with the technology that made it possible, would change cinema for decades to come. Here, the actor remembers auditioning for the role – one he thought at the time was only going to involve his voice. Can you just get me a decent audition for one of the proper roles? “The way that the job had been explained to me was that they were making these films of The Lord of the Rings down in New Zealand and that they wanted a voice for a digital character. One of my first responses to my agent was, ‘Well, you know, I m not really a voice actor. Can you just get me a decent audition for one of the proper roles?’ When I found out it was Gollum it was like, ‘Wow, gosh, that s a really exciting character.’ I d read The Hobbit when I was at school and I remembered [Gollum] hugely from that. I was fortunate enough to witness my cat throwing up a fur ball It suddenly gave me this idea. I d never considered myself a voice actor, just a regular actor, and I had to kind of think my way into it. I started to work on this notion that he s called Gollum because of the way he sounds – and what would make his voice sound like that? I started to think about constriction of the throat, and as I was doing that, I was actually fortunate enough to witness my cat throwing up a fur ball. It suddenly gave me this idea that the whole physicality of the role would be determined by this force within, which is kind of built out of guilt and torment – this involuntary physical action is what caused this sound coming out of his mouth. (Photo by New Line/courtesy Everett Collection) We are looking at this new technology called motion capture. “[My audition] was at the American [International] Church in Tottenham Court Road in London, and I d already done one audition on tape for Peter. I went inside, and down this long corridor there was this tiny little room. It was quite mysterious actually, and I remember sitting in that corridor waiting for my turn. Then I went down into the corridor, went into the room, and met Pete and Fran [Walsh]… They were saying to me, ‘You ll be on set and you ll be working with these guys, but finally you ll be manifested as a CG character; we are looking at this new technology called motion capture. It s in its early stages and we re not quite sure how it s going to work, and it ll be a cross between that and some animation.’ I said, ‘Look, the only way I can do this character is by acting it out, by actually playing it. I m not a voice actor as such. I ve never done that.’ I started to crawl around and get into character and go through the coughing-up-fur-ball voice and sort of getting into the scene, and played the tortured nature of Gollum. Pete was giggling away, and I thought, ‘OK.’ I think they were just really tickled by what I was doing. Pete was sort of crawling around too with his camera and filming it from various different angles and all sorts of different ways of shooting it.”Gollum as he appears in 2003 s The Return of the King. (Photo by @ New Line/courtesy Everett Collection) When I saw the first fully re-sculpted version of Gollum, it totally looked like my dad. Gradually they asked me to play the former role of Smeagol, before he becomes Gollum. Once that had happened, they decided to redesign the whole of Gollum s face just around my features. Then my performance was filmed on 35mm for every scene, and then the animators, using faders… would then match every single facial expression of mine. In fact, when I first saw the first fully re-sculpted version of Gollum, it absolutely, totally looked like my dad, which was kind of freaky and extraordinary and made sense really. Now I know what I m going to look like when I m you know, 22 years older.”THE MOMENT: Gollum and Smeagol TalkThe Two Towers packs its 179 minutes with a slew of memorable moments and sequences – chief among them the 40-minute-long climactic Battle of Helm s Deep, still considered by many the greatest battle committed to film. Yet it s the dialogue between Gollum and Smeagol, a tortured, moonlit exchange between both sides of the one soul, that lingers. The almost photo-realistic realization of the creature impresses, but it s the writing, sharp editing, and Serkis s performance that make it more than just a memorable evolution in film technology. Gollum is basically an addict or a Ring junkie. “The evolution of the character changed en route. Rather than it just being Gollum, we teased out the notion of Gollum as being this almost schizophrenic personality, and we pushed the voice in different directions. Working with Fran Walsh, and [co-writer] Philippa Boyens as well, we pushed the notion of Gollum being the more visceral, brutal kind of survivor character and Smeagol being the young, innocent sibling, if you like – abused sibling. I had to find for myself something tangible, something real, in the real world, so that the power of the Ring would resonate, and so for me it was really about addiction. Gollum is basically an addict or a Ring junkie. His physicality as such was very much based on someone suffering the terrible physical symptoms of a very strong addiction. It s tearing the body apart and tearing the mind apart, and the decrepitude of his body and the tortured, twisted, emaciated look was the externalizing of what was going on inside his mind and soul. Then Philippa and Fran pushed the writing to really embolden those ideas, and that was exemplified with the scene in The Two Towers where Gollum literally talks to himself. That was something that s actually happened since. For instance, in the Apes movies that I was involved in, we had direct capture on set with motion-capture cameras in the trees – on location, capturing everything in one take. At that point, in the early stages, especially in The Two Towers, I would have to go back onto a motion-capture stage and repeat [the scene] a third time [after shooting it first with the other actors, then again reading lines out of frame with the other actors shooting it]. I would have to then do my performance again on my own in a motion-capture stage. We shot [the scene of Gollum and Smeagol talking] on a location, so the tree that he used and the rocks that he was sort of hiding behind and going either side of in the first few shots, that was all built. That was a real set, and we shot all that on a location, doing that two-part process. We constructed the whole scene like that, with the fallen log and Gollum eventually jumping down and spinning around with all the leaves and all of that being kicked up. You can just concentrate on performance. “There was rewriting. The thing is with Fran and Philippa and Pete, there s always a sort of constant rewriting of the script and evolving the script, and with every take they re looking for something new and something fresh in the moment. Also, from a writing point of view, once they ve shot something, they like to be able to go back in, and with performance capture you have that ability. That is one of the joyful things about performance capture: the ability to completely improvise and try something different, and keep going and keep going and exploring, without the pressure of being on a live-action film set. You re not going to run out of film, you don t have to change lights, you don t have to do anything. You can just concentrate on performance, which is an amazing thing.”THE IMPACT: An Unexpected Journey The Lord of the Rings trilogy would make almost billion worldwide, and its conclusion, The Return of the King, would win Best Picture at the Academy Awards (the two previous films were also nominated in the category, but neither won). The trilogy s impact on film, and studio decision-making, was huge: the 2000s saw a number of fantasy titles get the green light, Jackson would later return to Middle-earth with The Hobbit films, and viewers of TV smash Game of Thrones say its makers owe much to what Jackson and his team put into cinemas every December between 2001 and 2003. For Serkis, The Lord of the Rings was life-changing; he would become the go-to actor for performance-capture roles, starring in The Rise of the Planet of the Apes and its sequels as Caesar, as King Kong in Jackson s 2005 take on that classic story, and he would direct his own film, Mowgli, which would push technology to new places. With each step, the technology advanced and the wow-factor intensified – what remained constant was the strength of the Serkis performance driving it. If I lifted up my arm, Gollum would lift his. The first epiphany moment for me, where I realized how much I loved performance capture, or motion capture as it was at the time, was being on the motion-capture stage and seeing in real time: If I lifted up my arm, Gollum would lift his. I could see a gray-shaded model of Gollum lifting up his arm, and that for me cemented this affair, really, with the technology, and the realization of what it could actually do. I ll never forget [when I first saw the character on the big screen]. It was at the Ziegfeld Theater in New York; it was at the world premiere of The Two Towers. The movie just was so potent and powerful, with the halls of Helm s Deep. Politically where we were – it was just post-911 and there was this sense of doom, of just the world changing. The world seemed so fractured and dangerous and frightening, and seeing that film, it just felt so much like it was reflecting that in some way. It was a very potent experience; such an amazing experience seeing it with a live audience. I did have this extraordinary experience when [the scene with Gollum and Smeagol talking] came up. I could literally feel the audience leaning in and just, like, not quite sure what this was. They couldn t quite work it out. Was this an actor? Was this a creature? That character for me defined a big, big turning point in my career, and opened up a huge world. You know, there isn t a single day that goes past when someone doesn t come up to me and talk to me about Gollum. I mean, it really is quite extraordinary. He s a beloved character, because I think everyone feels something for him. They either feel something very strongly about him, towards him, or they kind of feel themselves to be like him in some way. And with so many great debuts — from family-favorite sequels to refreshing feel good rom-coms — we think this year s slate of new holiday TV and streaming movies are sure to earn a place alongside your favorite holiday classics. So in no particular order, here are our picks for the top 5 best new holiday TV and streaming movies of the year on this week s Binge Guide.On an Apple device? Follow Rotten Tomatoes on Apple News.
k Widow 2 set in the five-year gap between Thanos s (Josh Brolin) death and Scott Lang s (Paul Rudd) return from the Quantum Realm. Would Natasha be as weary as she seems in Endgame? Why would she feel that way if she reestablished ties with Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), Melina Vostokoff (Rachel Weisz), and Alexi Shostakov (David Harbour). Did they get Blipped? Or did another falling out occur, leaving her to run the Avengers with occasional in-person visits from Steve Rogers (Chris Evans)? Alternatively, a sequel could see Nat and Yelena teaming up for another quip-filled adventure as the Red Room still needs further dismantling.Also, we ll point out here that another objective of Black Widow was to establish Yelena as a major Marvel player going forward, so we expect any Black Widow sequel would feature her. That said, a Marvel more comfortable with prequels could go back to the Budapest operation (even if we got the gist of what transpired in Black Widow) or even focus on a story in which Natasha is the villain during her time as a Red Room agent. More prequels mean more possibilities while still maintaining the deaths and actions of certain characters a feat even the comics can t pull off!Implications for the Hawkeye Disney+ Series(Photo by ©Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)But speaking of Yelena, the film s most direct nod to Phase Four comes during the film s post-credit stinger, when the former Black Widow accepts a mission to hunt down Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner), a thread that will be picked up in the upcoming Hawkeye television series. Shot in late 2020 and early 2021, the Disney+ series will see Clint training or assisting Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld), a new Hawkeye with issues all her own. Also, we re pretty sure they re going to run afoul of tracksuit-loving mobsters and adopt an adorable golden retriever with a love of pizza.The project was one of Marvel Studios worst kept secrets, with its existence long-rumored and Steinfeld s part in it leaking a year before the studio made the news official and even then, photos of the actor in costume appeared on the internet a good week before studio president Kevin Feige finally confirmed her participation at the December 2020 Disney Investor s Day presentation. Another rumor about the show indicated Pugh would be making her first post-Black Widow appearance in the series. Then, in December of 2020, it was reported that Pugh officially joined the cast of the series alongside a handful of others. Just a couple of days ago, in an interview with Variety specifically about the post-credits stinger at the end of Black Widow, director Cate Shortland and Pugh essentially confirmed what everyone suspected when Pugh confessed that she didn’t ever really imagine that [her role in the MCU] would continue quite so quickly. It s worth noting, though, that as Black Widow was originally slated for release last year, the Hawkeye reference sets up something well into the Disney+ slate. It sidesteps the initially announced programs in favor of what will be Marvel Studio s sixth television program, although there is a nod to another TV show we ll talk about in a moment. As it stands now, Hawkeye will debut less than year after Black Widow, which means Yelena will be fresher in viewer s minds when she inevitably beats the living daylights out of Clint.The Contessa As Phase Four s Fury(Photo by ©Walt Disney Company)Of course, the stinger also features an appearance by Contessa Valentina Allegra de la Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus). According to Feige, she was always meant to debut in Black Widow, with the stinger serving as a forward link to The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. But since her debut ended up occurring in that series, the Contessa s appearance here has a slightly different effect it amplifies, rather than establishes, the notion that she s serving as Phase Four s answer to Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson).As we theorized after TFaTWS s finale, the Contessa is collecting a team of her own. From her conversation with Yelena, we can gather that Yelena already works for her by the time she learns of Natasha s death on Vormir. But just what is the Contessa s aim in building her own Avengers?The character s comic book history offer some clues, as the character evolved into the most adept rogue agent ever trained. In her lifetime as a comic book character, she has betrayed S.H.I.E.L.D., Hydra, and seemingly Leviathan, although she could still be loyal to that group. So far in the MCU, the Contessa s subordinates include an ex-Russian spy and a failed Captain America. That doesn t feel like an accident, despite whatever promise of glory and country she feeds to John Walker (Wyatt Russell).(Photo by ©Walt Disney Company)Is it possible she runs the current incarnation of the MCU s Leviathan, the Soviet scientific research and espionage agency we mentioned in our round-up of Five Things to Remember Before You See Black Widow? Like Hydra, it was built to survive, and she could easily be its director.Then again, she could be working with Fury. The two have a long history in the comics, and she could be collecting Phase Four characters on his behalf. The motive: a further defense against whatever foe is up in space that Fury is planning for with the Skrulls (as glimpsed in the Far From Home post-post-credits stinger). But that all depends on whether or not the Contessa is in any way altruistic.Lastly, there is always the possibility that she herself is a Skrull and furthering an agenda to be revealed in Secret Invasion another Phase Four Disney+ series due next year.No matter the true answer, it is interesting to see a character assembling a new team for a shadowy purpose.Taskmaster As A Continuing Threat(Photo by Jay Maidment/©Marvel Studios)We admit this one may be built on a flimsy premise Marvel seemingly cast Olga Kurylenko for a two-line role in Black Widow. But a face as familiar as hers suggests to us that we will see Taskmaster again. For one thing, she s a great hand-to-hand foe. Imagine Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) or Shang-Chi (Simu Liu) facing an opponent who knows their every move. Try to think of the quip Clint will deliver after she squarely trounces him.But beyond the physical threat she poses to just about everyone, there is also a further story to tell about her. As opposed to her comic book counter, who is often just a mercenary, Antonia s story is one of trauma and the horrible realization that her own father put her in this situation. How will she come to terms with that? Will her freedom from mind control and apparent turn away from evil at the end of Black Widow actually stick, or will her anger lead her down the villain s path? If the latter, will she be clever enough to organize some of the villains herself, or will she fall in with someone like Helmut Zemo (Daniel Brühl)?(Photo by Adrienn Szabo/©Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)Come to think of it, one of the few things Marvel Studios has yet to attempt is a villain team-up. Is it time for the Masters of Evil? Granted, they ll need a slight rebranding as that name hardly suits Zemo s style or politics.Marvel could also utilize Taskmaster as a recurring villain, which the franchise has done on occasion (not counting big bads like Thanos or Loki). Antagonists generally die or get completely de-fanged by the end of a Marvel movie, and one of comic book Taskmaster s great strengths is his resiliency. Antonia could prove more successful at the recurring villain role than Crossbones (Frank Grillo) or Batroc (Georges St-Pierre). Also, as Taskmaster fights everyone in the comics, Antonia could appear in anything from an Eternals sequel to the Moon Knight series to Blade.Black Widow is in theaters and streaming on Disney+ with Premier Access now.On an Apple device? Few movie franchises maintain the level of perfection that Toy Story has. The first two installments of Pixar’s flagship film series have perfect scores on the Tomatometer. Toy Story 3, which was nominated for Best Picture, is close with 98%. Now Toy Story 4 is on its way to theaters, and initial reviews are pointing to another very high Tomatometer score (it s currently at 100%).Thanks to familiar friends, popular new additions, and another deep story involving the meaning of life, we’ll put to rest any complaints that Pixar is making too many sequels. If it’s the last of them, it ends on a great note, but if not, Toy Story can reach for the sky and go to infinity and beyond, as far as critics are concerned.Here’s what critics are saying about Toy Story 4:Did we really need another sequel after Toy Story 3?Part 3 ended so perfectly and succinctly that Part 4 could only disappoint. Except, the film doesn’t. We’re doing it to more accurately and authentically represent the voice of fans, while protecting our data and public forums from bad actors.As of February 25, we will no longer show the Want to See percentage score for a movie during its pre-release period. Why you might ask?  We’ve found that the Want to See percentage score is often times confused with the Audience Score percentage number. (The Audience Score percentage, for those who haven’t been following, is the percentage of all users who have rated the movie or TV show positively – that is, given it a star rating of 3.5 or higher – and is only shown once the movie or TV show is released.)What you will now see at the top of a movie or TV page, once it has been released, is this:What else are we doing? We are disabling the comment function prior to a movie s release date. Unfortunately, we have seen an uptick in non-constructive input, sometimes bordering on trolling, which we believe is a disservice to our general readership. We have decided that turning off this feature for now is the best course of action. Don’t worry though, fans will still get to have their say: Once a movie is released, audiences can leave a user rating and comments as they always have.Last but not least, you will notice we are making some layout changes to the site. Through our research department we have learned that our users would prefer a cleaner, less cluttered, presentation of the Tomatometer and Audience Score. Most of us won t be heading to cineplexes on Christmas Day this year, though, due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and the widespread business closures associated with it. Like a lot of things in 2020, it s an unprecedented situation, and movie lovers looking for something to pass the time will instead likely turn to HBO Max s Wonder Woman 1984 or Disney+ s Soul to fill that gap. All of this got us thinking about the movies of Christmas Past, and we thought it might be both fun and enlightening to look back at every film ever released on December 25th and try to figure out if one rises above all the rest.One might understandably assume the list would be littered with holiday classics, but since they re typically released earlier than, you know, Christmas Day, we ended up with a hodgepodge of just about anything you could imagine. Considering they include titles as diverse as Magnum Force, Tombstone, An American Werewolf in Paris, and that most celebrated of yuletide standards, 47 Ronin, it s clear that there isn t any rhyme or reason to Christmas Day releases beyond Let s cross our fingers and hope this makes a lot of money. First, our data set includes films that received wide releases on December 25th and have Tomatometers, Audience Scores, and reliable box office numbers. Regarding the latter, we had to stick to domestic box office earnings due to reliability issues with global market totals. Unfortunately, this meant older films like There Was a Crooked Man and Friday Foster failed to make the cut due to incomplete or insufficient data. Once we collected the relevant information, we ranked all the movies by Tomatometer, Audience Score, and Domestic Box Office (adjusted for inflation), added up their ranking numbers, and arranged the results in descending order so that the film with the lowest rank total would take the top spot. We know; it s a lot to digest.With the logistics out of the way, let’s get to why you’re here. After compiling all the statistics and ranking all 124 movies we looked at, we were able to narrow the list down to a Top 10. Will the top spot go to a bloody revisionist Western, an all-timer heist flick, or a stylish take on a legendary sleuth? Check out the full list below, along with each film s rank in our three data categories and a little bit of context, to find out which one is the Best Movie Released on December 25th!10. Tombstone (1993) 50 Points(Photo by ©Buena Vista Pictures courtesy Everett Collection)Tomatometer Score (Rank): 74% (21st)Audience Score (Rank): 94% (4th)Domestic Box Office (Rank): 5 million (25th)While we have no evidence of this, it’s safe to assume that many adults would’ve been O.K. to receive tickets from Santa to go watch Tombstone when it was released on December 25, 1993. The thought of watching legendary lawman Wyatt Earp (Kurt Russell) go to war against an outlaw gang of red-sashed murderers, led by Powers Boothe and Michael Biehn, is simply too epic to pass up. Not only was Tombstone a hit in 1993, but it’s grown in stature since then as its memorable mustachioed characters, epic gun fights, and iconic lines ( I’m your Huckleberry ) have become more and more popular. It also doesn’t hurt that the cast also includes – deep breath – Val Kilmer, Bill Paxton, Sam Elliott, Billy Zane, Michael Rooker, Charlton Heston, Stephen Lang, Thomas Haden Church, Billy Bob Thornton, and Dana Delaney, and they re all excellent. Tombstone is a rollicking good time, and despite some behind-the-scenes friction and director swaps, it s still a fan favorite that boasts an outstanding 94% Audience Score.It’s tough to single out the best moment, as the movie features a plethora of memorable scenes. Whether it’s Wyatt Earp’s takedown of a bully (Billy Bob Thornton in a fun cameo) or Doc Holliday s “I’m your Huckleberry” right before he puts one in Johnny Ringo s forehead, Tombstone has a deep bench of epic moments and characters, which is why it’s on our list.9. Sherlock Holmes (2009) 49 Points (Tie)(Photo by Alex Bailey/©Warner Bros. courtesy Everett Collection)Tomatometer Score (Rank): 69% (25th)Audience Score (Rank): 77% (20th)Domestic Box Office (Rank): 0 million (4th)Riding high off the success of 2008’s Iron Man, Robert Downey Jr. stepped into the well-worn shoes of another famous brilliant person, Sherlock Holmes. The end result was an intriguing modern-day update of the character created by Arthur Conan Doyle in 1887. Rather than simply using his brain, Holmes uses his brawn as well, engaging in underground fist fights that showcase his six-pack abs and uncanny ability to anticipate his foe s moves, which allows him to exert maximum pain on his bare-knuckle boxing opponent (is that cheating?).The Guy Ritchie-directed film about Sherlock’s hunt for an aristocratic serial killer would go on to collect 4 million worldwide and spawn a sequel two years later, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, which also cleared the 0 million mark at the global box office.Fans and critics alike were fairly impressed with the performances by A-listers Downey, Jude Law, Rachel McAdams, and Mark Strong, as well as the stylized directing of Ritchie, which breathed new life into an old character. We re even scheduled to get a third entry in the franchise in December of 2021.9. Magnum Force (1973) 49 Points (Tie)(Photo by Everett Collection)Tomatometer Score (Rank): 72% (23rd)Audience Score (Rank): 77% (20th)Domestic Box Office (Rank): 1 million (6th)As the second entry in the five-film Dirty Harry franchise, Magnum Force had the luxury of trading on the blockbuster success of its predecessor, but it also carried the expectations of the popular film that featured San Francisco Police Department Inspector Harry Callahan (Clint Eastwood) asking people if they felt lucky. Focusing on Harry s hunt for corrupt cops who take the law into their own hands, Magnum Force features explosions, murder, blood, profanity, and more explosions – you know, typical holiday movie stuff – which thrilled 1973 audiences who were looking for all of those things. Director Ted Post, who also worked with Eastwood on the well-received 1968 Western Hang ‘em High, knew what he was doing (making an action sequel), and there is no better evidence of that than in the opening credits: the cast and crew list is played over Harry’s .44 Magnum gun, which he then points towards the screen and shoots (think American James Bond) in a bonkers breaking of the fourth wall that tells the audience immediately what they re in for.7. Broadcast News (1987) 48 Points(Photo by ©20th Century Fox Film Corp.)Tomatometer Score (Rank): 98% (2nd)Audience Score (Rank): 79% (18th)Domestic Box Office (Rank): 6 million (28th)Written and directed by James L. Brooks, the workplace comedy Broadcast News was nominated for seven Academy Awards and is considered to be one of the greatest movies ever about journalism. Holly Hunter, William Hurt, and Albert Brooks all received Oscar nominations for their lively performances, and it would be tough to find a more likable and well-written comedy about three people who love/hate making television together. Hunter famously joined the project shortly before production started, and she’s so good you’d think Brooks wrote the role just for her. Also, if you’ve never watched Broadcast News, go ahead and check out Aaron s (Albert Brooks) sweating scene; it’s an uncomfortable moment that features an excellent reporter absolutely bombing on camera, and Brooks plays it to perfection. Glancing at the reviews, you’ll see the phrases “uproariously funny,” “warm and heartfelt,” and “enormously entertaining” pop up time after time, and for good reason. Broadcast News gave audiences a lot to cheer for on December 25, 1987.6. The Aviator (2004) 47 Points(Photo by Warner Bros. Pictures)Tomatometer Score (Rank): 86% (11th)Audience Score (Rank): 79% (18th)Domestic Box Office (Rank): 7 million (18th)Directed by Martin Scorsese, and starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Cate Blanchett (who won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar), and Kate Beckinsale, among others, The Aviator focuses on the early life of director/aviator/entrepreneur Howard Hughes and his legendary antics. Much like Hughes, The Aviator is larger than life as Scorsese loads it with glamour, plane crashes, and excellent visual effects that blend seamlessly into the period setting. The Aviator was the second (of the now five) collaborations between DiCaprio and Scorsese, and it netted DiCaprio his first Best Actor Academy Award nomination (he was previously nominated for Best Supporting Actor for What’s Eating Gilbert Grape); it also happens to be the first of three – yes, three – appearances on this list by Leonardo DiCaprio. The 0 million-budgeted drama won five Oscars (of a total 11 nominations) and still holds up beautifully, as the work of editor Thelma Schoomaker and cinematographer Robert Richardson give the 170-minute biopic an epic feel.5. Little Women (2019) 42 Points(Photo by Sony Pictures)Tomatometer Score (Rank): 95% (5th)Audience Score (Rank): 92% (6th)Domestic Box Office (Rank): 8 million (31st)Powered by Greta Gerwig’s Academy Award-nominated script and direction, the million-budgeted Little Women pulled in 6 million worldwide and was met with near universal praise. The feat is all the more impressive (and not altogether unexpected, since Gerwig loves the novel) considering Louisa May Alcott’s iconic story about sisters growing up in Massachusetts during the civil war has been adapted for the screen multiple times, dating all the way back to 1917. What makes this adaptation stand out among the rest is the way Gerwig includes a nonlinear storyline and a different ending to offer audiences something fresh and unexpected. Also, bringing back her Lady Bird star Saoirise Ronan to play the pivotal role of Jo March was a smart idea, as the two work wonderfully together, and Ronan received Academy Award nominations for both films. Plus, Gerwig didn t stop with Ronan; she and producer Amy Pascal also landed the immense talents of Meryl Streep, Florence Pugh (who received a Best Supporting Actress nomination), Emma Watson, Laura Dern, Timothée Chalamet, and a host of other incredible actors, lending the film the kind of A-list shimmer you d expect to see in a prestige picture.4. To Kill A Mockingbird (1962) 30 Points(Photo by Everett Collection)Tomatometer Score (Rank): 92% (7th)Audience Score (Rank): 92% (6th)Domestic Box Office (Rank): 8 million (17th)Since its release in 1960, Harper Lee s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel To Kill a Mockingbird has been an American institution that has sold over 40 million copies and been discussed and re-evaluated in classrooms across the country. Two years after its publication, director Robert Mulligan brought To Kill a Mockingbird to the big screen, and it was a smash hit that won three Academy Awards and eventually earned the 25th spot on the American Film Institute’s Top 100 Films list. Anchored by Gregory Peck’s Oscar-winning performance and Horton Foote’s faithful screenplay, Mockingbird tells the story of Atticus Finch (Peck), a lawyer in the depression-era South defending a Black man named Tom Robinson (Brock Peters) who has been put on trial for an undeserved rape conviction.Putting aside the important cultural discussion that continues to this day, To Kill a Mockingbird is an example of a book adaptation done right. Mulligan and Foote knew they had excellent source material to work from, so they stuck to it (mostly), and with the help of Harper Lee presented a faithful adaptation that struck a chord with audiences who saw the movie as a gift when it opened on Christmas Day of 1962.3. Django Unchained (2012) 28 Points(Photo by Andrew Cooper/©Weinstein Company)Tomatometer Score (Rank): 87% (10th)Audience Score (Rank): 91% (7th)Domestic Box Office (Rank): 1 million (9th)Between Four Rooms, Jackie Brown, and The Hateful Eight, Quentin Tarantino sure loves releasing movies on December 25, but his biggest Christmas Day hit came from Django Unchained, a super R-rated revisionist Western featuring a final gunfight that leaves a Mississippi plantation estate flooded with blood. The movie pulled in a whopping million its opening day (Catch Me If You Can only pulled in million) and ended up earning 1 million domestic, winning Academy Awards for Tarantino (Best Original Screenplay) and Christoph Waltz (who won his second Best Supporting Actor Oscar after earning his first for another Tarantino collaboration, Inglourious Basterds).Django Unchained tells the story of a freed slave named Django (Jamie Foxx) who teams up with an eccentric German bounty hunter named Dr. King Shultz (Waltz) in exchange for Shultz s help freeing Django’s wife Broomhilda (Kerry Washington) from the vile clutches of plantation owner Calvin Candy (Leonardo DiCaprio, making his second appearance on this list). Normally, hard R-rated exploitation films with 165-minute running times wouldn’t be nominated for five Academy Awards (and win two). Yet under Tarantino’s supervision, Django delighted audiences around the world and provided Christmas counterprogramming with silver-tongued devils, flesh-ripping torture, and Leo DiCaprio monologuing about skulls.2. Catch Me If You Can (2002) 15 Points(Photo by ©DreamWorks courtesy Everett Collection)Tomatometer Score (Rank): 96% (4th)Audience Score (Rank): 89% (9th)Domestic Box Office (Rank): 7 million (2nd)It wasn’t a hard sell to get audiences into theaters to watch Catch Me If You Can in 2002. Directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Tom Hanks and Leonardo DiCaprio (and that makes three!), Catch Me If You Can is a rollicking film about Frank W. Abagnale Jr. (DiCaprio), a likable con man being chased around the world by Carl Hanratty (Hanks), a likable FBI agent who really wants to, well, catch him. During the globe-trotting caper, we also get to spend time with the very likable Frank Abigaile Sr., played by Christopher Walken, whose performance was so warm and welcoming he received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor.We’re not trying to be reductive about how likable the movie is, either. The expertise of Spielberg, the skill of his cast, and the Oscar-nominated score by John Williams make this 141-minute film fly by faster than a Pan Am airliner. Its appeal to people of all ages can’t be argued because it’s the rare film to receive nominations from the AARP, MTV, and Teen Choice Awards, which essentially makes it the Tom Hanks of movies.1. The Sting (1973) 10 Points(Photo by Universal Pictures)Tomatometer Score (Rank): 94% (6th)Audience Score (Rank): 95% (3rd)Domestic Box Office (Rank): 5 million (1st)Looking to build off the blockbuster success of 1969 s Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, which grossed 1 million domestically and won four Academy Awards, director George Roy Hill and stars Robert Redford and Paul Newman reteamed for The Sting. With an “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” mantra in place, The Sting once again showcased Redford and Newman’s unbeatable chemistry, playing lovable criminals who plan on swindling money from a shifty character played by Robert Shaw in 1930s Chicago (and hopefully avoid a freeze-framed death via a barrage of bullets). The Sting might be one of the most enjoyable films to ever to win Best Picture at the Academy Awards (it won a total of 7 Oscars from its 11 nominations). It also boasts an 5 million domestic box office haul, which would make almost any Marvel film jealous, and it s currently the 21st highest domestic grossing film of all time. If you haven’t watched The Sting, do yourself a favor and check it out, because the A-list star power, the beautiful Oscar-winning costumes, and the charisma of Redford and Newman together are undeniable.On an Apple device? Rosemary s Baby and 1944 s Gaslight combine in this new horror tale from first-time director Joe Marcantonio featuring stellar performances from newcomer Tamara Lawrance and Killing Eve s Fiona Shaw. A young pregnant woman plagued by disturbing hallucinations begins to suspect the family caring for her has nefarious intentions for her unborn child. With impressive, nuanced performances all round, this is a film that grips throughout despite its slow pace. You may decide early on that you know where it s going, but the ending still makes an impact, writes Jennie Kermode in Eye for Film. We recently chatted with Marcantonio about the film, the horrors of parenting, and what is on his Indie Fresh List.Jacqueline Coley for Rotten Tomatoes: Is it better to do horror right now? It seems like horror as a genre might be a bit pandemic proof.Joe Marcantonio: Kindred is a film that skirts many genres there are funny bits, scary bits, thrilling bits, elements of suspense but it isn’t a horror film in a traditional sense. There are no jump scares, maniacs, or monsters. I was inspired by the films of Park Chan-wook and Bong Joon-ho, and the way that South Korean cinema manages to mix genres in really interesting and unique ways. Just look at how hard it is to categorize a film like Parasite.Having said that, it’s clear that times of uncertainly or national trauma always seem to serve as a catalyst for interesting horror films. The Great Depression spawned Frankenstein and The Mummy in the 30s, about the fear of the unknown. McCarthyism spawned Invasion of the Body Snatchers,  about the potential infiltration of an insidious force. The Vietnam War spawned Psycho, Rosemary’s Baby, and The Exorcist, all about the breakdown of traditional family values. The War on Terror spawned the term torture porn, when there was so much talk about torture and whether it is ever justifiable. And recently the Fake News era seems to have produced recent films like His House and Saint Maud that have escapist fantasy elements yet deal with truth and lies. I guess Kindred potentially falls into the same camp. Watching scary films that reflect the society in some way enables people to experience their fears in a safe space, to feel scared or terrified yet retain some control. It acts as a catharsis at times of uncertainty.Many have made the obvious Rosemary s Baby comparisons, but what is it about motherhood and horror? Why can it twist into something terrifying so easily?I remember how helpless I felt when I was first left at home in charge of my son, and how freaked out I was to be responsible for keeping such a vulnerable creature alive. We’d had a home birth, and when the midwife left and my wife was resting, I stood in the kitchen, holding him, not knowing what to do. The level of vulnerability and uncertainty was overwhelming, and if you add the anxiety and terror involved, it is very fertile ground for horror.To be totally honest, the truth is that a lot of the characters in the film are reflecting my own experiences as a parent. There is a monologue that Margaret gives about her regrets as a parent, and there is an uncomfortable amount of truth in there about my feelings and mental health concerns in the wake of my daughter s birth. It’s slightly traumatic for me to watch as, it feels very exposing and raw, but it s probably my favorite scene in the film.Talk about casting Tamara. So much of the film falls on her reaction, and was it always intended to have a Black female lead?The script Jason and I wrote was always non-specific about race, simply because we were open to all possibilities. In the end, we cast Tamara because she was the best actress we saw, not because she was the best Black actress we saw. Maybe I was being naive to what some people s reactions to that choice would be, but I’m very glad we picked her. She’s really terrific, a superb actor and a wonderful person. Race is such a prevalent talking point in the USA at the moment (and it s an issue in the UK too), so I totally understand people reading a lot into that decision, but the film was always intended as one about the British class system and inherited wealth, rather than one about race. Margaret would hate anyone who tried to take her son away, whatever they looked like or race they were. Because of the decision to cast Tamara in the role, we’ve had a lot of comparisons to Get Out, and seem to have caught the ire of some reviewers who think that we were jumping on some kind of bandwagon, or attempting to copy that film in some way, but that was never the case. We do feature an old-fashioned teacup in Kindred, as they do in Get Out, but that’s only because the film is set in the UK and we drink a lot of tea! Margaret wouldn’t be caught dead drinking from a mug; it s far too common.The house is a big part of the drama of the film. How did you find the perfect location?For a variety of reasons, we decided to shoot the film in Ireland, and their political history means that there were a lot of manor houses built by the English landowners that were initially installed by Oliver Cromwell and his cronies. But after Irish independence, a lot of the large houses were burned down or fell into disrepair. In England, a grand house like that would have a car park and a cafe, and they’d charge you a small fortune to walk around and look at the paintings. But their outlook on these things is different in Ireland, so we had a few good locations as options.The house was always intended to be a character in the film, and I had a clear image in my mind about the kind of place we had to find. We found a few okay options, but kept hearing whispers about a place called Stradbally. A few people even suggested we shouldn t go and look at it because of the associated cost problems; it is so far from Dublin you need to put crew up in hotels. But we drove out to visit, and as soon as we saw Stradbally Hall, I apologized to my producer because I knew this was the place and his job was going to get a lot harder. An upside to its remoteness is that not a lot of other people have shot there I think the only shoot was a couple of scenes in the Lassie movie back in 2005. The guy who owns the house is called Thomas coincidently, that is the same name as Jack s character in the film. It felt like a sign.The place looks haunted on its face. Did you feel that in real life?It’s definitely a slightly spooky place. Most of the strange paintings and taxidermy in the film were actually situated around the house; boxing hedgehogs, foxes, ferrets it was all quite odd. The owners are a friendly family with young kids, and they live in a small, modernized part of the house, but one member of the family still lives in that larger part of the house, and every now and then he’d unexpectedly walk past in his dressing gown and give you a bit of a fright.What is on your Indie Fresh List what independent films are you watching, or what are you watching in general?I really enjoyed His House and Saint Maud  they are both genre films, and they feel very considered and cinematic in their approach. Turner is seen in her Stark armor in the EW photogallery and says that Sansa has been enjoying leadership. In the teasers, we saw Sansa greet Daenerys and Jon at Winterfell, and in the trailer, she s shown seeing dragons fly over the castle.Arya Stark — at Winterfell chatting with Sansa on the castle s ramparts, having just executed Lord Petyr Baelish. Arya wears cloth/fur armor that protects her right side, under her sword arm, and leaves her sword unencumbered in the EW gallery, and Williams says her character is somewhat torn between being Arya Stark of old and “her unfinished business.” Arya is show in action in the first full trailer, battling wights and running for her life.Bran Stark — at Winterfell with Samwell Tarly, figuring out that Jon Snow is the true heir to the Iron Throne. In the trailer, Bran says, “Everything you did brought you where you are now…where you belong .home.” He is shown still sitting with Sam, who exhales frosty breath (a previously used sign of White Walkers close by). Hempstead-Wright teased to EW that Bran is less robotic in the final season. In a conversation with Rotten Tomatoes, Hempstead-Wright gave us some insight into how the Three-Eyed Raven thing works: “It’s like he’s got a dictionary in front of him, the whole of time. Coster-Waldau states definitively what we thought saw in that moment at the end of season 7: that Jaime is “choosing to do what he believes is right.” (Why he’s wearing his sword on his left hip when he would need to unsheathe it using his left hand is a mystery – perhaps just for the sake of the photo.) Coster-Waldau had previously told Rotten Tomatoes that he was very much looking forward to Jon and Daenerys’ relationship: “It’s so easy to be morally shocked about the brother and sister thing, and yes, it’s absolutely horrific  I think 95 percent of all the audience are rooting for Daenerys and Jon Snow to get together, which is going to be the next incestuous relationship. He does not appear in the trailer, but Furdik told EW that the Night King is a monster with a mission: He s got a specific target he intends to kill.100,000 or so wights and White Walkers — following closely behind their dragon-rider — which begs the question: Could he be a Targaryen? The Three-Eyed Raven (Max von Sydow–edition) showed us a blond man being stabbed with dragonglass, but who was he and where did he come from?
