The new series is about “an isolated island community experiences miraculous events — and frightening omens — after the arrival of a charismatic, mysterious young priest.”The 100 star Lindsey Morgan will star with Supernatural’s Jared Padelecki in Walker, the network’s Walker, Texas Ranger reboot. She will play Walker’s partner, M urth highest-grossing film of the year, and it certainly has its eye on third place. Second, however, could take a bit of work. Last weekend with an opening that rose above 0 million, the fourth Toy Story was ahead of the third film in the franchise by about million. At the end of this weekend, it is still ahead of Toy Story 3’s pace by about million even if it trails weekend two of part three .3 million to .9 million. Toy Story 3 had a run that did not see a drop of 50 percent until its 13th weekend. Part four dropped 52 percent this weekend, but also had farther to fall. The 2010 chapter fell 46.2 percent and 49 percent in its second and third weekends. Meanwhile, Toy Story 4 sits at 6 million domestic and 6 million worldwide; the sixth-highest total of 2019 to date. Of the 14 films to gross between 0-250 million after 10 days, only three of them (The Hunger Games, Spider-Man, and Toy Story 3) broke the 0 million domestic mark, but Toy Story 4 remains on track.Fresh Surprise: Yesterday Poised To Be One of Danny Boyle’s Highest Grossers(Photo by Universal Pictures)It may sound surprising to some, but Yesterday actually represents the best opening of director Danny Boyle’s career. Then again, it is only the fourth film in his career — on that has included Transpotting, 127 Hours, and Slumdog Millionaire — to open wide its first weekend. The last film of his to do that was 28 Days Later back in 2003, and it earned million. The Beach in 2000 was his previous high with .2 million, even if it remains his lowest scored film on the Tomatometer at 20% and just one of two Rotten films (including A Life Less Ordinary) in his filmography. With a 59% rating currently, Yesterday teeters on the edge of Fresh, but Universal is very likely more interested in the film s million start. (The studio partnered with Boyle on 2015’s Steve Jobs, which opened strong in four theaters but ultimately grossed just .7 million total.) Boyle’s Oscar-winning Slumdog is his crowning box office achievement with over 1 million, but it is also just one of three of his films to gross over million. Yesterday will be the fourth. Will the million–budgeted film have enough word-of-mouth to pass The Beach’s million?Top 10 and Beyond: Latest Annabelle Film Lags the First Two(Photo by New Line Cinema)Annabelle Comes Home opened this past Wednesday to .18 million. As of Sunday, it is estimated to have made .2 million, which is relatively low all things considered. Of the previous Wednesday openers that began with million or more, 47 Ronin (.61 million), Rocky Balboa (.85), The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (.36), and Magic Mike XXL (.89) were the only ones this century to not have million by Sunday. Annabelle Comes Home is the next-lowest after that with The First Purge coming in at .28 million. The first Annabelle made .11 million in its first five days. Annabelle: Creation made .15 million. They both opened on Fridays. Those other three films grossed million to million domestic. The million production has already grossed over million globally, so it is going to be just fine.Eight of the top 10 films this week are either sequels or remakes. John Wick Chapter 3 – Parabellum is approaching 0 million worldwide. It is also Keanu Reeves’ third highest–grossing live-action film after the first two Matrix films. Illuminations’ The Secret Life of Pets 2 has not picked up any international steam yet and is only at 8 million worldwide. Its path is similar to that of this summer’s Pokemon Detective Pikachu and is headed for somewhere between 1 million and 4 million — or, less than 0 million domestically below the first film. Men in Black International is doing better internationally, but much more poorly here. It is only at 9 million worldwide and still needs another 1 million to break even. The remake of Child’s Play cost 0 million less than MIBI, but is not exactly setting the box office on fire either after dropping 70 percent in its second weekend and stands at million.Far more successful is Paramount’s Rocketman. The million production has made over million domestic and 1 million worldwide — 0 million may be off the table now but it remains on track to exceed million. Disney’s Aladdin has crossed 0 million domestically, and its 4 million globally puts it in 63rd place all-time. It needs another million to break into the top 50.Lastly, we have the Avengers: Endgame record watch. Returning to theaters this weekend with new footage not seen in its first nine weeks, the Marvel title made another .9 million. At .76 billion worldwide, it is now million shy of Avatar’s all-time record. This Time Last Year: Dinos Superheroes Emerge Victorious(Photo by Universal Pictures)Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom had no challengers and won the box office for a second straight weekend with .9 million. Incredibles 2 also had nothing to threaten its second-place finish with .4 million, bringing its total to over 0 million. The best the week could offer was the sequel, Sicario: Day of the Soldado, which opened in third with million. Also opening was the basketball comedy, Uncle Drew, which finished fourth with .2 million. The lackluster numbers below that title opened the door for Hindi film Sanju to finish in eighth place with .72 million. The Top 10 totaled 7.20 million and averaged 63% on the Tomatometer. This year’s Top 10 grossed an estimated 5.14 million and averaged 69%.On the Vine: Spider-Man Hopes for Avengers Bump, While Midsommar Chases Critical Acclaim(Photo by Sony Pictures)The next chapter of the MCU arrives when Tom Holland returns as Peter Parker in Spider-Man: Far From Home. Will this film receive the same kind of box office bump that got Iron Man 3 over 0 million as the first one out of the gate after the success of the 2012 Avengers film? It currently has a 91% on the Tomatometer. (Spider-Man: Homecoming has a 92%, opened at 7 million, and went on to make 0 million worldwide.)Then Ari Aster returns with a new horror epic after the praise of last year’s debut, Hereditary, one of the 10 best-reviewed horror films of the decade. Based on the 85% that Midsommar has received so far, Aster (like Jordan Peele) has a shot to own two films on that list. The Full Top 10: June 28-30Toy Story 4 (2019) 97% – .93 million (6.92 million total)Annabelle Comes Home (2019) 65% – .37 million (.20 million total)Yesterday (2019) 63% – million ( million total)Aladdin (2019) 57% – .34 million (5.86 million total)The Secret Life of Pets 2 (2019) 60% – .09 million (1.20 million total)Men in Black: International (2019) 23% – .55 million (.00 million total)Avengers: Endgame (2019) 94% – .53 million (1.31 million total)Child's Play (2019) 64% – .27 million (.40 million total)Rocketman (2019) 89% – .87 million (.17 million total)John Wick: Chapter 3 -- Parabellum (2019) 89% – .17 million (1.31 million total)

There’s a lot of excitement to be had with the release of Black Widow (out in theaters and on Disney+ with Premier Access on July 9). For one, the title character, played by Scarlett Johansson in the Marvel Cinematic Universe since 2010, finally has her own solo movie. Also, MCU fans finally get a new theatrical feature after two years of drought due to an unfortunate delay. And, finally, it’s also apparently pretty good and worth those two waits. The first crop of reviews for Black Widow, most of them positive, highlight additional things to be excited about specifically, from the performances by Johansson and Marvel newbie Florence Pugh to the relatively grounded action scenes and darker emotional themes for the franchise. It’s obviously not as epic as the last two Avengers movies, though, and whether that makes this a lesser entry or a breath of fresh air will be up for debate. Here’s what critics are saying about Black Widow:Is it worth the wait?Black Widow is finally here after years of delays and pushbacks due to the state of the world – but does it deliver where it needs to? The short answer is yes.  Tessa Smith, Mama s GeekyAfter the extended delays of Natasha Romanoff’s long-overdue solo film, Black Widow was certainly worth the wait.  Doug Jamieson, The Jam ReportOur patience pays off… Marvel Studios does it again and delivers the goods.  Danielle Solzman, Solzy at the MoviesBlack Widow manages to be an extremely welcome case of better late than never.  Jamie Jirak, ComicBook.comTruly better so very late than never.  Brian Tallerico, RogerEbert.comThere is a too little, too late sense of closure that makes some of the film’s narrative choices confusing at times.  Mae Abdulbaki, Screen RantHow does it compare to other parts of the MCU?The best aspects of Black Widow echo the ‘70s spy movie tone of one of the best films in the MCU, Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Brian Tallerico, RogerEbert.comThink a scaled-down version of Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Joey Magidson, Awards RadarBetter than Captain America: The Winter Soldier? Probably not. Superior to anything with the word Ant, Doctor, Hulk or even Thor in the title? Most def. Joey Morona, Cleveland Plain DealerBlack Widow is certainly no Thor Ragnarok or Black Panther and has fairly average MCU visuals and fight scenes. Nicole Ackman, Next Best PictureBlack Widow reminds me the most of Doctor Strange — a movie about a complicated adult character facing up to their own actions and redefining their place in the world without blaming it all on bad daddies. Evan Dossey, Midwest Film JournalShifting away from the superhero template into high-octane espionage thriller territory, it makes a far more satisfying female-driven MCU entry than the blandly bombastic Captain Marvel. David Rooney, Hollywood ReporterBlack Widow may be the least Avenger-like movie in the series so far. No offense to the other Avengers, but after all this time a tweak in the formula is a good thing. Caryn James, BBC.com(Photo by ©Marvel Studios)Does it bring anything new to the franchise?More than other Marvel movies, Black Widow tries to ground the story in a personal, character-driven narrative. Brian Lloyd, entertainment.ieIt has some of Marvel s best character dynamics to date. Jamie Jirak, ComicBook.comWhat sets Black Widow apart from the other MCU movies is that it embraces the darkness inherent in the premise of the character. Evan Dossey, Midwest Film JournalMuch of it doesn’t feel like a Marvel film at all, thanks to the darker tone. Nicole Clark, IGN MoviesDoes it work as a standalone movie? The plot… feels small by MCU standards, but that simplicity is a refreshing change of pace for a franchise that’s too often about saving the world. Rob Hunter, Film School RejectsIt s the palate cleanser the franchise needed… a self-contained, back-to-basics adventure that works just as well for newbies and casual viewers as it does for longtime fans. Angie Han, MashableBlack Widow is a pleasure exactly because it is inessential. Nick De Semlyen, Empire MagazineBlack Widow reminds us of the pleasure that can be offered by an MCU movie that isn’t having to do the legwork of setting up the next five chapters. Alonso Duralde, The WrapSomething is definitely set up for the future, but… Marvel could use these occasionally more self-contained films. Joey Magidson, Awards RadarBlack Widow is a rare Marvel production… that almost, almost pulls off the trick of being wholly its own thing. Richard Lawson, Vanity FairBlack Widow is merely a stepping stone film that fills in a few blanks that weren’t really there to begin with. Matt Rodriguez, ShakefireThis movie feels more like an introduction and set up for what is to come, than the solo film this character deserves. Tessa Smith, Mama s Geeky(Photo by ©Marvel Studios)How is the action? The film has some of the best action sequences in recent memory. Mae Abdulbaki, Screen RantA vast team of choreographers, stunt folks and trainers… gives the movie a visual coherence that most Marvel movies lack. Roger Moore, Movie NationThe fight choreography and stunt work here is impressive and occasionally thrilling, but more often than not, the effect is undercut by the over-cutting. Alonso Duralde, The WrapThe editing of the fight scenes is perhaps a touch too unrelentingly fast, often blurring the choreography, but the physical side never feels overwhelmed by CG enhancement. David Rooney, Hollywood ReporterThe physics are different here than in other Marvel movies, more finely attuned to the hardness and weight of things. It all feels a bit more real. Richard Lawson, Vanity FairFeels more grounded than many MCU entries… while we still get some comic book antics showing the expected disregard for physics we also see the physical toll that all that fighting takes on a human body. Rob Hunter, Film School RejectsThe (comparatively) grounded choreography leads to some of Marvel s most thrilling battles since at least Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Angie Han, MashableIt’s a nice dial back from Marvel films whose heroes can feel immortal… feels satisfyingly street level, in a Jessica Jones kind of way. Nicole Clark, IGN MoviesHow is Cate Shortland s work as director? There are moments where Black Widow absolutely benefits from having a woman in the director’s chair. Alonso Duralde, The WrapShortland proves to be one of the few filmmakers to make the leap from the indie circuit and put her own singular fingerprint on the visual identity of the film — Black Widow is one of the most visually coherent solo films of the MCU, with a gritty, streetwise style that feels like Shortland didn’t just hand off the action scenes to a second unit director. Hoai-Tran Bui, SlashfilmShortland s previous work in psychological thrillers The Berlin Syndrome and Lore gives her an edge with the kind of pulpy material at play here. Brian Lloyd, entertainment.ieShortland keeps things moving along, never letting you feel the runtime — efficiently paced and exciting. Joey Magidson, Awards Radar(Photo by Jay Maidment/©Marvel Studios)What about Scarlett Johansson s performance as Natasha?Scarlett Johansson [is] at her best. Jenna Busch, VitalThrills.comJohansson shines in the role, layering her signature bad assery with a previously unseen vulnerability. Joey Morona, Cleveland Plain DealerThe actress makes the most of it and delivers a powerful, moving performance that serves as a fitting farewell to her tenure as this Avenger. Josh Wilding, ComicBookMovie.comIt’s Scarlett Johansson who holds the film together and gives it its touch of soul… [She] makes the most vulnerable emotions part of the humanity of her strength. Owen Gleiberman, VarietyDoes Florence Pugh fit well into the franchise? If you re not already a fan of Pugh, you will be by the end of Black Widow. Yelena s a firecracker with great one-liners. Kirsten Acuna, InsiderOne of the most exciting additions to the MCU in some time. Josh Wilding, ComicBookMovie.comShe nails it with the spark of someone who’s been kicking around the Marvelverse since day one. Philip De Semlyen, Time OutShe shares much of Natasha’s fighting style while displaying even more sass. Rob Hunter, Film School RejectsHer deadpan is pitch-perfect, coaxing humor out of a traditionally stoic Scarlett Johansson. Where Natasha has coped by turning cold, Yelena has coped with humor. Nicole Clark, IGN MoviesPugh has a dangerous physicality to her as well, which lends to one of the best aspects of Black Widow. Hoai-Tran Bui, Slashfilm(Photo by Jay Maidment/©Marvel Studios)How are the villains in the film?Taskmaster certainly isn’t going to go down as one of the MCU’s best villains, but Black Widow makes good use of the character [as] a seemingly unstoppable force. Josh Wilding, ComicBookMovie.comRay Winstone also makes a great antagonist as Dreykov, conveying an insidious cruelty that is more devastating than most other MCU villains that have come before. Mae Abdulbaki, Screen RantOne of the better executions of villainy in the MCU… Dreykov’s character coheres effortlessly and successfully, feeling earned and without a hint of desperate pandering to feminists. Courtney Howard, Fresh FictionJust having Winstone in this picture lifts it several notches, and he is deliciously fun and scarily authentic as the villain of the piece. Pete Hammond, DeadlineRay Winstone is one of the weakest in the franchise. Joey Magidson, Awards RadarHow is the script? The plot [is] blessedly clean, caulking the spaces in between the stepping stones with characters’ interpersonal dynamics while avoiding any convolution. Courtney Howard, Fresh FictionThere is a lot of talking here, and if you aren’t willing, interested or inclined to invest yourself in the characters, it will likely be at the bottom of your re-watch pile. Evan Dossey, Midwest Film JournalThere is a moment that the writers seem to have decided they didn t have an answer to so they just skipped past it and onto the resolution. Amelia Emberwing, WhatToWatchBlack Widow feels of little consequence, delivering a story that has written itself into a corner with nowhere to go. Matt Rodriguez, ShakefireRyan FujitaniIs it a positive step for female characters in the MCU?We finally get to see Natasha… in a film full of women. Sorry, I mean freaking badass women. And it’s wonderful. Jenna Busch, VitalThrills.comBlack Widow puts female issues front and center without ever making it feel forced or preachy. Rob Hunter, Film School RejectsNeedless to say, the movie does a far better job than the rah-rah inclusivity gesture at the end of Endgame to play up its feminist leanings. Black Widow not only passes the Bechdel Test; it forces men to squeam as it puts them in their place. Eric Kohn, IndieWireDeriving strength from enduring suffering feels as slimy as it does tragic, a nail in the coffin to Marvel’s handling of women superheroes. Nicole Clark, IGN MoviesDoes the movie have any major problems?Natasha is more of a driving force for the other characters around her… even with her name in the title, the spotlight is constantly on someone else. Matt Rodriguez, ShakefireThe movie definitely wraps up a little too quickly; it s as if Marvel Studios had suddenly remembered they had to get Natasha where she needed to be for Infinity War. Josh Wilding, ComicBookMovie.comDescribing the horrors of the Red Room and the Black Widow program in a scene that s meant to be solely comedic because Disney s too afraid to get real with its media? That s maybe something we could have done without. Amelia Emberwing, WhatToWatch(Photo by Jay Maidment/©Marvel Studios)Will it leave fans hopeful for the future of the MCU?The themes of family and women s agency that it explores are a welcome addition to the MCU and hopefully a good indication of where Phase 4 is going. Nicole Ackman, Next Best PictureThe swings that the film takes make it an interesting entry… I’m glad the studio was willing to go all the way with it. Here’s to Marvel taking more risks in the future. Evan Dossey, Midwest Film Journal[It] should hopefully set the bar of inclusiveness for the remainder of Phase Four. Nate Adams, The Only CriticBy delivering a story that satisfies on its own terms… it makes a compelling case for moving ahead with this franchise into the future. Angie Han, MashableThe sorry thing of the film, really, is that this needn’t have been a Marvel movie at all. 4. 呼朋唤友 随心所欲
In the nascent days of smartphones, micro-blogging, and social media, The CW premiered Gossip Girl, a teen soap about rich kids causing havoc under the watchful eye of a mysterious blogger known only as Gossip Girl. It aired for six seasons, starting in 2007, and had an audience so loyal that there are some who are still upset about the finale s reveal of who was behind that account.Well, Gossip Girl (and, therefore, Gossip Girl the character) is getting a makeover for the post-millennial crowd. A sequel to the series, which focuses on another generation of elite New Yorkers, premieres July 8 on streaming service HBO Max.But have things changed that much? Here s what you need to know about the new take on Gossip Girl.XOXO.1. It Boasts a More Diverse Cast(Photo by Karolina Wojtasik / HBO Max)The first Gossip Girl brought up plenty of important issues, such as consent and cyberbullying. But almost all of its leads were white and almost no one was queer (Ed Westwick s Chuck Bass admittance that he s kissed guys aside). Connor Paolo’s Eric van der Woodsen — the younger brother of Blake Lively’s Serena — comes out to Chuck before his family because he knows Chuck won t judge him (their mom, Kelly Rutherford s Lily, did have a hard time with the news). The actors who play the kids at the center of the story in the new version come from a variety of racial and ethnic backgrounds. Lead by Jordan Alexander’s Julien Calloway, they include Emily Alyn Lind’s icy bookworm Audrey Hope; Eli Brown’s white, liberal and guilted Otto Obie Bergmann IV; Thomas Doherty’s party-loving Max Wolfe; Evan Mock’s pretty but sometimes slow-on-the-uptake Akeno Aki Menzies; Zión Moreno’s master of the beauty contour Luna La; and Savannah Smith s burgeoning publicist Monet de Haan. In the story s main season 1 plot point, Whitney Peak’s new girl, Zoya Lott, will infiltrate this group.(Photo by Karolina Wojtasik / HBO Max)Many, like Max and Monet, are openly queer. Max also has openly queer parents, played by John Benjamin Hickey and Todd Almond — as opposed to Leighton Meester’s Blair Waldorf, whose dad Harold (John Shea) was closeted until he left his wife for another man. Any show that you work on is its chance to show how you, yourself, have grown and changed and learned, Joshua Safran, the creator of the new Gossip Girl who also wrote on the original series, told Rotten Tomatoes.Safran, who is openly gay, employed several queer writers and there were many talks about sexuality — both their experiences with it and how it s seen today. It was important to not make it a story worthy of shame or guilt. Eric s sexuality was weaponized by Gossip Girl. And that definitely would never happen now, he said.(Photo by Karolina Wojtasik / HBO Max)Conversely, in this iteration of the show, Aki begins to question his sexuality. We discussed the idea that most television shows these days, posit that it s easy to come out in this world, Safran said. And I think a lot of the world believes that that because the queer community has more rights than we ve ever had before, even if we still don t have all the rights that we should have. For Aki, it s a multiple-season journey for him to gain comfort and clarity about sexuality, Safran said.2. Activism and Influencer Culture Are Main Topics (Photo by Karolina Wojtasik / HBO Max)Meester s Blair, Lively s Serena and other characters from the original series mostly took their wealth for granted. They took private jets, rode in limos and basically schemed and harassed each other until they became adults with jobs and amassed more wealth. So did their parents. When Nate Archibald s (Chace Crawford) family fortune was diminishing, his parents plotted ways to find new investments. The latest installment discusses generational wealth and inherent privilege — which reflects upon the conversations many actual people are having after the coronavirus pandemic and movements like Black Lives Matter brought these topics to the mainstream. Obie supports those picketing his family s real estate development by bringing them donuts and volunteers for a non-profit. He and Zoya bond over discussions of classism. Monet and Luna tell Julian to get over her ex in a conversation that dissects the media s history of bulling newly single female celebrities that includes the line f-k the patriarchy. If you re on Tik Tok, if you are on Instagram, if you spend time actually looking at what s out there, you ll see how socially conscious young people are these days, Safran said, and it doesn t matter whether they are what their, sort of, economic arena that there is, they actually are all talking about it in a way that we definitely didn t talk about it when I was their age. (Photo by Karolina Wojtasik / HBO Max)The scripts were written pre-COVID and before the Black Lives Matter uprisings and similar events from last year, but Safran said the writers did use the time when production was shut down to fine-tune the scripts. In one episode, Obi and Zoya talk about being at a protest and they actually both have a framework to talk about, it s not just like an ideological discussion. It was also unclear how well the original crop of kids were known outside of their Manhattan bubble (and with some folks they met in Los Angeles, Paris, or the Hamptons). They weren t like Paris and Nicky Hilton, who were paparazzi fodder even before one of them got her own reality show. In the current world of being Internet famous versus actually famous and what that means for your brand, the show also discusses influencer culture. Jordan is popular, in part, because she s the face of a blue-checked Instagram account that s largely backed by Luna and Monet.(Photo by Karolina Wojtasik / HBO Max)In a side-eye of a casting choice, Gossip Girl 2.0 also employs former child fashion blogger Tavi Gevinson — but as Kate Keller, an adult teacher at the school with an unhealthy interest in her students. Mock is also a celebrity skateboarder with his own strong social media following (including Safran, who wrote this part for him because he s a fan). However, neither of these two were cast because they have a strong social media following. With Mock, Safran wanted to write about the Murdochs and Wendi Deng and base something on that relationship, he said, adding that his casting director, Cassandra Kulukundis, recommended Gevinson and noting that Tavi s Tavi-ness is what makes Kate so great. 3. Storylines and Dialogue Are More R-Rated(Photo by Karolina Wojtasik / HBO Max)There was plenty of parental pearl-clutching when the first Gossip Girl premiered and promised sex and more on primetime TV. The brilliant marketing minds at The CW and studio Warner Bros. turned these into campaigns with lines like OMFG or (to meet FCC and broadcast standards) simply OMG. Now airing on a paid streaming service and free from these constraints, the new Gossip Girl celebrates with cursing, nudity, and sex acts that aren t PG (and aren t appropriate for the youngest of the Gen Z demographic). A storyline sure to put the Parents Television Council on red alert involves cruising in a bathhouse.Safran noted that the show did have an intimacy coordinator on set and that we never wanted a sex scene to be gratuitous; it always was character-based. An example: in the third season, Aki receives oral stimulation from his girlfriend, Audrey. But Safran said this is a story point. It s actually a sex act to show a sex act. The couple also have a conversation in the first episode about fantasizing during intercourse, which Safran said is a scene that s about having a partner that doesn t feel like they should have any ownership of you; that allows you to experience pleasure the way you want to experience it. (Photo by HBO Max)Doherty s Max is open about his recreational drug use (he takes Xanax at school, for example). But Safran said that the character also talks very clearly about how he s very strong in his boundaries. He only does one line; one drink; one pill. This is the antithesis of Westwick s Chuck, Safran said because that character will go as hard and far on anything. Max actually knows his boundaries and sticks within them until an event in the third episode takes him to a dark place. In an interesting twist, the new episodes of Gossip Girl will air on The CW after they first air on HBO Max. It will be interesting to see what kind of editing occurs.4. Gossip Girl Sounds the Same (Photo by Karolina Wojtasik / HBO Max) But her range has increased.Although the face of the titular narrator and chronicler(s) of all of these escapades still remains a mystery to her targets, readers in both series have decided that she sounds like Veronica Mars star Kristen Bell. There was never a question as to whether the new show would keep Bell around. Safran said that if she didn t want to do it, I don t know if we would have done it. However, her monologue has shifted for this digital age. She no longer addresses just the Upper East Siders, and she s no longer solely focused on Manhattan. With WiFi connections everywhere, (presumably only private school) kids in all the boroughs now have targets on their backs because, Safran said, the new account will also include tips about kids at other schools.Perhaps more important: she no longer talks about the scandalous lives of these people. Safran changed it to lies because she points out the fact that it s the change of the show: It s that social media allows you to get a positive version of yourself. 5. Who She Is Isn t a Secret(Photo by Karolina Wojtasik / HBO Max)The first Gossip Girl dragged out the reveal of who was behind the mysterious posts until the final episode when it was revealed that it was Penn Badgley s Dan Humphrey. In Safran s version, the reveal is quite obvious early on and it s not a usual suspect. The first time around, the audience didn t get to partake in watching Dan be the Gossip Girl and do all the things that he was doing, Safran said. If you went back and sort of re-edited the show to see him posting everything, you d see sort of this much more morally complex, dark antihero. He adds that now that you can actually watch what it means to be Gossip Girl and, sort of, the choices you have to make, the things you do that are complicated and morally suspect, but you re doing it for the right reasons — or so you re telling yourself — that s a fresh take on the story. And it s also something that really make the audience feel complicit in Gossip Girl s journey in a way that they weren t allowed to be, by design, the first time around with it. Gossip Girl premieres on Thursday, July 8 on HBO Max and debuts the next night at 8/7c on The CW.On an Apple device? Follow Rotten Tomatoes on Apple News.

Could the social commentary have been a little stronger?“I couldn’t help but see a missed opportunity for a richer, more complex look at what the politically powerful do when the poor gain some power of their own.” Travis Hopson, Punch Drunk Critics“It feels shallow, unwilling to commit to bigger statements beyond vague suggestions to overcome systemic injustice with Black Excellence.” Oluwatayo Adewole, The Spool“The movie’s sexism is predictable and dull; how it navigates race is similarly obvious but a touch more interesting.” Manohla Dargis, New York Times(Photo by © NETFLIX)Does Project Power impress visually?“With the aim of maximizing the use of practical effects…there are a number of standout showdowns featuring dramatic powers.” Nicola Austin, We Have a Hulk“The visuals one scene offers will have college students studying in film classes for years to come.” Allison Rose, FlickDirect“[The] effects fit the world and don’t scream GREEN SCREEN at you like some movies.”  Julian Lytle, idobi.com“The VFX, for the most part, are what you’d expect from any major film – except for one scene in the middle. The CGI in this scene is awful.” Jamal-Dean Grootboom, Independent OnlineHow Is Jamie Foxx?“Jamie Foxx is Jamie Foxx. He brings charisma, he brings charm, he gets you entertained…he does a great job.” Sharronda Williams, Pay or Wait“Foxx, still a movie star to his bones, imbues Art with both fierce purpose and breezy charisma.” Leah Greenblatt, Entertainment Weekly“Foxx holds the center easily with the kind of imposing physicality and emotional stoicism that has long defined the male savior-redeemers played by John Wayne, Clint Eastwood, Denzel Washington and so on.” Manohla Dargis, New York Times(Photo by SKIP BOLEN/NETFLIX © 2020)We hear Dominique Fishback steals the movie  “The real star of the picture is Fishback…such a natural presence, and it’s great to see a young Black woman showcased this way in a major action film.” Clint Worthington, Consequence of Sound“She elevates every scene she’s in. You really feel her absence when she’s not on screen.” Oluwatayo Adewole, The Spool“She brings a smile to your face when she’s on screen…this movie doesn’t work without Dominique Fishback.” Sharronda Williams, Pay or Wait“She’s this movie’s most reliable power and the only thing you’ll remember about it five minutes later.” Justin Chang, Los Angeles Times“It’s a star-making performance.” Richard Roeper, Chicago Sun-Times“While I could do away with the ‘aspiring rapper’ trope writers always saddle on at-risk black protagonists, Fishback at least tries to make the character her own.” Travis Hopson, Punch Drunk Critics(Photo by SKIP BOLEN/NETFLIX © 2020)How Are the villains?“Don’t miss Rodrigo Santoro and Amy Landecker as some amusing bad guys.” Kate Erbland, IndieWire“Frank and Art aren’t fighting Thanos or Blofeld, but the drug itself and the havoc it wreaks: crime, bodily harm, crumbling neighborhoods.” Johnny Oleksinski, New York Post“Like The Old Guard before it, Project Power has a major villain problem, and the story upon which these more charming elements hang suffers as a result.” Clint Worthington, Consequence of Sound“The way they deal with the villains, though very fun and action packed, seems a bit too quick and easy.” Tessa Smith, Mama’s Geeky“There s a primary antagonist, sort of, who barks orders but is never explained…I’m sure this was done purposely to set up the sequel.” Julian Roman, MovieWebWill it leave us wanting more?“I would love to delve deeper into these characters and the origins of the pills, opening up the door for a possible sequel.” Allison Rose, FlickDirect“Perhaps the (inevitable) sequel can pack more juice.” Kate Erbland, IndieWire“This could be turned into a franchise but it also just works as a standalone. You get to the end and you feel entertained and fulfilled.” Julian Lytle, idobi.com(Photo by SKIP BOLEN/NETFLIX © 2020)So, it s worth a stream?“Netflix has indeed found a niche in adrenalized action flicks that’ll keep you entertained during lockdown while providing a little more nuance than you might expect, and Project Power fits right into that niche.” Steve Pond, The Wrap“Project Power is sleek and stylish enough to make it watchable. And these days, that’s almost enough?” Sean O’Connell, Cinema Blend“Since you’re sitting at home, scarfing entertainment on the small screen, there’s an impulse to say, ‘Check this out! It’s good enough!’” Owen Gleiberman, Variety“Project Power [is] an entertaining diversion.” Adam Graham, Detroit NewsProject Power is available on Netflix now.

This Week s Ketchup brings you more headlines from the world of film development news, covering new projects for Jason Statham, Adam Driver, Jamie Foxx, Daisy Ridley, and more. This WEEK S TOP STORYADAM DRIVER JOINS NEW FILM FROM WRITERS OF A QUIET PLACE(Photo by ©Netflix)Adam Driver is coming off a monster 2019, during which he not only completed his run in the Star Wars sequel trilogy as Kylo Ren but also earned a Best Actor Oscar nomination for his work in Noah Baumbach s Netflix original film Marriage Story. Next up for Driver is Ridley Scott s historical drama The Last Duel, which just went back into production after initiating a hiatus due to COVID-19, and he s in talks for Scott s next film, the Lady Gaga-powered based-on-true-events crime drama Gucci, but he s also just landed what could be a very interesting new role. Deadline reports that Driver has signed on to a film called 65, which will be written and directed by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, the duo who wrote John Krasinki s A Quiet Place. Sam Raimi will also be producing the film, which, combined with the presence of Beck and Woods, gives us some idea what kind of movie it will be, though no details on the plot have yet been released. There s also no indication when 65 will go into production, but considering Driver s busy schedule and in-demand status, it could be a while.Other Top Headlines1. JASON STATHAM AND GUY RITCHIE COLLABORATE AGAIN FOR SPY THRILLER(Photo by Gareth Davies/Getty Images)Before he transitioned to big-budget studio blockbusters, Guy Ritchie made his bones with a couple of slick and witty crime capers featuring a then-unknown Jason Statham (Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch). After he turned in the live-action remake of Disney s Aladdin last year, he then returned to those roots with The Gentlemen, albeit without Statham. And while Ritchie and Statham are indeed scheduled to reunite for another caper called Cash Truck, which is currently in post-production, they ll be taking their talents international with a new spy thriller called Five Eyes. The story will follow an MI6 agent (Statham) who is recruited by global intelligence alliance Five Eyes to track down and stop the sale of a deadly new weapon that threatens to disrupt the world order. Including the yet-to-be-released Cash Truck (it s scheduled for January 15, 2021), this will be the fifth collaboration between Ritchie and Statham.2. UPCOMING ZACK SNYDER ZOMBIE MOVIE GETS A PREQUEL AND ANIME SERIES(Photo by ©Netflix)Zack Snyder made a big splash a couple weekends ago during the DC FanDome event when he unveiled the first trailer for The Snyder Cut of Justice League, which will air in four parts on the HBO Max streaming service sometime in 2021. In the meantime, Snyder has been working on a little zombie heist film called Army of the Dead, purportedly developed as a sequel to his 2004 remake of Dawn of the Dead. That film is slated to be released on Netflix, and although we don t yet know exactly when that ll be, the streaming giant has gone ahead and greenlit both a prequel film and a spin-off anime series. Prolific German actor Matthias Schweighöfer (Valkyrie, The Command), who will appear in Army of the Dead, will also star in and direct the prequel, which will center on his character, while Army of the Dead writer Shay Hatten (John Wick: Chapter 3 Parabellum) will write both the prequel and the anime series, the latter of which will be called Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas and focus on Dave Bautista s character from the film. No word on when we ll be getting those yet, either.3. JAMIE FOXX, TEYONAH PARRIS JOIN JOHN BOYEGA NETFLIX THRILLER(Photo by Dee Cercone, Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection)Just a few weeks ago, Netflix released the superhero-themed Project Power to somewhat mixed reviews, further reinforcing their efforts to lean hard into genre entertainment. What set that film apart, like The Old Guard before it, from some of its lesser fare was the presence of A-list talent, namely Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Jamie Foxx. Currently, Netflix is gearing up for another production with Star Wars alumnus John Boyega at the lead called They Cloned Tyrone, which will be the directorial debut of Juel Taylor, the screenwriter of Creed II, and Foxx is one of the two new stars who joined it this week. Ther other is Teyonah Parris (Dear White People, If Beale Street Could Talk), who will appear later this year (presumably) in Nia DaCosta s Candyman. The characters played by Boyega, Foxx, and Parris will be thrust onto the trail of a nefarious government conspiracy after a series of eerie events, evidently involving clones, if the title is any indication. In somewhat related news, Boyega also made headlines this week when an interview he did with GQ revealed that he was not a fan of how Disney and the Star Wars sequel trilogy treated its characters of color Finn in particular prompting renewed debate over the films.4. DAISY RIDLEY JOINS WWII DRAMA WOMEN IN THE CASTLE(Photo by Nicola Dove/©20th Century Fox Film Corporation)Considering the impact it had on the world, it shouldn t surprise anyone that we continue to see new films set during World War II, even despite the wealth of stories we already have about the era. The latest is a film called Women in the Castle, a drama adapted from the 2017 novel of the same name by Jessica Shattuck. The story revolves around three women whose husbands were killed in an assassination attempt on Hitler, and how their lives are individually affected by the event. This week we learned that the three women will be played by Daisy Ridley (Rey from the recent Star Wars trilogy), Kristin Scott Thomas (The English Patient, Darkest Hour), and German actress Nina Hoss, who earned widespread acclaim for another recent WWII film, Phoenix. Women in the Castle will be adapted and directed by Jane Anderson, whose 2017 film The Wife earned Glenn Close a number of awards and an Oscar nomination for Best Actress.5. CHLOE GRACE MORETZ JOINS SCI-FI THRILLER MOTHER/ANDROID(Photo by Shane Mahood/Focus Features)Like Zack Snyder, Matt Reeves made an appearance at DC FanDome to stoke anticipation for his upcoming film The Batman, for which he unveiled the very first trailer. As he continues to pull that film together in the face of unforeseen hurdles (more on that below), Reeves is also putting on his producer hat for a new sci-fi film that will be the directorial debut of Mattson Tomlin, who came on board to help Reeves write the script for The Batman and whose most recent script was for Netflix s Project Power. The new film is called Mother/Android, and it will star Chloe Grace Moretz (who appeared in Reeves Let Me In)as a young pregnant woman who flees with her boyfriend from a war between their country and a malevolent artificial intelligence in hopes of giving birth in a safe environment. Tomlin, who also wrote the script, based the story on his own parents who fled the Romanian Revolution. Mother/Android doesn t have a release date yet, but Tomlin has a number of big projects on the horizon, including the sci-fi drama Little Fish and a big-screen adaptation of the video game Mega Man, so it could be a while.6. DISNEY S HAUNTED MANSION IS BACK IN DEVELOPMENT(Photo by Walt Disney courtesy Everett Collection)While Disney has gotten mixed results from their films based on theme park attractions, most everyone agrees that 2003 s The Haunted Mansion, starring Eddie Murphy, was a tragic misfire. A few years later in 2010, there was some hope that longtime fan Guillermo del Toro would be able to craft something worthwhile as he set about developing a new take on the ride that would be scary and fun at the same time, but the scary will be scary. As the years passed, del Toro struggled to make much headway on the film, even with Ryan Gosling in talks to star at one point, and as recently as 2019, he expressed doubt that the film would ever be made, though he would love to see a Haunted Mansion movie by someone who loves it. That time may have come, as Disney recently announced they are moving forward with a new adaptation of The Haunted Mansion, this time written by Katie Dippold. Dippold s most recent credits include the Melissa McCarthy/Sandra Bullock action comedy The Heat, the 2016 reboot of Ghostbusters, and 2017 s Snatched, as well as episodes of Parks and Recreation. The next big movie based on a Disney ride will be Jungle Cruise, starring Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt, which is scheduled to open on July 31, 2021.7. ROBERT PATTINSON, DWAYNE JOHNSON AMONG STARS WHO HAVE CONTRACTED COVID-19(Photo by Elizabeth Goodenough, Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection)As we ve mentioned frequently over the past few months, the ongoing coronavirus pandemic has resulted in film and television production delays across the board, but lost time is nothing when compared to the very real threat of illness, and famous people are, of course, no more immune to COVID-19 than the rest of us. Back in March, Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson were the first two high-profile celebrities who revealed they had come down with the virus while filming Baz Luhrmann s Elvis Presley biopic in Australia (they re currently recovering),  and they were followed by others, like Idris Elba, Sara Bareilles, Daniel Dae Kim, Bryan Cranston, Lena Dunham, and Zoey Deutch, just to name a few. This week, we learned that two more of Hollywood s biggest stars have also contracted the virus. Dwayne Johnson took to Instagram to announce to his fans that he and his family had tested positive for COVID-19, but were currently on the other side of it and recuperating, while it was also revealed that Matt Reeves production of The Batman had to be halted just days after shooting on the film had resumed because star Robert Pattinson had also tested positive for the virus. The latter announcement comes just a little over a week after DC FanDome, when Reeves unveiled the new trailer for the film and offered fans the first look of Pattinson in action as the character. It remains to be seen how long the delay will be, but it serves as a reminder to the rest of us that nobody is above the pandemic. So please stay vigilant, stay safe, and practice social distancing protocols, so we can all enjoy The Batman together.8. HOLLYWOOD RESPONDS TO DEATH OF CHADWICK BOSEMAN(Photo by Marvel Studios)Last Friday, the world was stunned to learn that Chadwick Boseman, the actor who had portrayed such real-life luminaries as James Brown, Jackie Robinson, and Thurgood Marshall, as well as the Marvel superhero Black Panther, had succumbed to the colon cancer he had been battling since 2016. Part of the shock came because of what he represented to movie fans, but also because no one not even those he worked closely with was aware of his condition, even as he churned out critically acclaimed hits and record-breaking blockbusters. News of his death, as reported by his family on Twitter, resonated powerfully with fans, which resulted in an outpouring of emotion and inspired a number of tributes. In the wake of the announcement, the film Black Panther shot to the top of charts on Amazon and iTunes, while ABC aired the film on Sunday along with a tribute to Boseman anchored by Robin Roberts and TBS made space in its schedule to air the film twice. AMC theaters also decided to rerelease the Jackie Robinson biopic 42 in theaters, beginning this weekend, and after just one day, the tweet announcing his death became the most liked tweet ever. Boseman clearly had a massive impact on the world, and he will be sorely missed.
Kimberly Potts for Rotten Tomatoes: What attracted you to this topic, to this project?Kerry Ehrin: Initially it was Brian Stelter s book, Top of the Morning (which the Apple TV+ series is based on). I really liked it, and the tone of the world he was describing, and I was just saying it felt like a very good stage to write great character stories on, set against this high stakes world, but also there s a social absurdity to that world … so competitive, and the behavior gets a little bit like, almost high school-ish. So that was a very intriguing world to me. And then obviously Reese and Jennifer, getting to create complex female characters with high profile, high stakes jobs, and write about female relationships in a real way was very intriguing to me. All those elements don t line up every day.(Photo by Apple TV+)One of the most things with the stars of morning TV is how much their personal lives are impacted by their jobs. Even just the fact that they have to get up at these ridiculous hours — that has to impact their time with their kids and their family and friends and personal time. How much are you going to get into that, Alex and Bradley s personal lives, as the season goes on?Ehrin: A great deal. I think that s a big part of Alex s story, how much she has sacrificed to get to that top level. And Bradley is really just entering into this world. So her story is more about being from the outside and trying to acclimate and immerse into it … When you live those kind of hours, there s no question that it becomes your life and it dictates your life. Any high-stress job becomes your life and dictates your life.I m guessing that s something you can relate to as a showrunner.Ehrin: Oh, 100 percent. I mean, I could also relate to it when I was working retail. Jobs do end up dictating your life. But yeah, I mean, when you have a ton of financial responsibility for other people, you do live with it all the time.Getting into the characters, viewers are going to assume that Mitch Kessler (Steve Carell) is Matt Lauer. What is your response to that?Ehrin: Well, I mean, it isn t. I get, I guess, why people would go there. I don t know … I don t know why they never pick Charlie Rose. But all I can tell you is … it isn t Matt Lauer. It s an amalgam of human beings that I ve interacted with, that have been in my life, and some people that have been in the public eye. But it really is an original tale. It isn t “The Matt Lauer Story” at all. Nor did I want to write that.(Photo by Apple TV+)In the first three episodes, viewers get some viewpoints that they might not be expecting. This is a discussion of all angles and some nuanced points of view that haven’t played out so much in a scripted series. Episode three in particular, with Mitch’s conversation with the director played by Martin Short — do you think people are ready for, or maybe even craving at this point, a nuanced look at this subject?Ehrin: I feel like there s a lot of layers to that question. I mean, one of them is, there s a specific road we re going down with the stories that we re telling, and you re meeting a character in the beginning, so there s that aspect of it. I m trying to say this without giving too much stuff away. It’s a story about human beings who are in this web. And I don t think (Mitch) is written overly sympathetically. It s interesting to me that people are saying, Oh, he s so sympathetic. And I don t think he s any more sympathetic than anyone in the show. I think everyone on the show is really screwed up in different ways. He’s a narcissist, he clearly lives inside his own reality of what s real and what s right. And I mean, yeah, Steve Carell is a likable, charming guy, but so are a lot of these guys. So I think you have to look at the whole enchilada. And I would say this will be a better discussion after episode ten.It s interesting to see this particular story play out from all these different points of view.Ehrin: It s a huge thing. There s a huge movement. It has affected everybody, and it s seismic. So yeah, it s a story of looking at it and at all the elements.(Photo by Apple TV+)Kudos for keeping the Martin Short cameo under wraps. He was great, and having such a beloved actor playing that character, saying those shocking things about his behavior, and challenging Mitch to consider his own behavior, was impactful. I hope the surprise of his appearance isn’t spoiled for people before they watch the episode.Ehrin: That would actually be great, because it is so exciting to see him, and he s so good. Man, that guy is a great actor. He s really, really good. What s your goal overall with the development of Bradley and Alex s characters? Ehrin: They both have important individual stories. Alex s being about a highly successful person who has sacrificed so much of her life and was so close to this partner who gets fired for sexual misconduct. And it really is about how it dismantles her life. And then Bradley s is about a person who has a lot of demons from her family and isn t really psychologically or emotionally set up for success, and finds herself pulled into this world. And how do you, as sort of an emotional outsider of success, how do you function in that world? And can you survive it? Can you thrive in it or is that impossible? In addition to that, there is the story of these two women who come into each other s lives, and I really wanted to do a realistic story and not make them hate each other, like All About Eve, or they re best friends and they re never mean. I really wanted to do just a real nuanced portrayal of all (aspects) of a female working relationship — all of its wonderful complexities. And that s been the ongoing road. That s the heart of it to me, what that relationship is about and how it develops and evolves.(Photo by Apple TV+)We’ve met Bradley’s family, her mom and her brother, and there have been hints that she has sort of been almost a parental figure for both of them. Is that something we’ll get into a lot more?Ehrin: Yeah. That s a big part of Bradley s character, who she is and dealing with that. If you have baggage that you haven t dealt with and you get thrust into a high-stress, high-profile job, it s a different experience than someone who does not have that baggage. You ve made great television, told great stories, on network and cable, and now a streaming service. Has it been different in any big ways creating this show for a streaming service?Ehrin: There s been more freedom, certainly. I think that was always a challenge for me, because I ve been doing this for a while, and for a big chunk of my career there weren t all these venues available. And you had to fit in (on)  broadcast, and it was always, always, always a challenge to — if you re a little idiosyncratic, if you re a little dark, if you re a little to the left of center, it was just harder to fit into that mold, that box, and still get to play with your whole deck of cards.Do you feel like you finally have gotten to do a show, this show, exactly how you would want to do it?Ehrin: Yeah, I do. I mean, I felt that way about Bates as well, except for the swearing. It really would have made it a little more (realistic) to have people be able to talk the way people actually speak. And also, commercials are just death to me. That used to kill me about Bates, because I felt like it was like an opera, and then you d be so into these huge, crazy things, and then it s an ad for erectile dysfunction or insurance. And it just was like, it completely wrecked it for me. So that was always hard. But this is pretty cool. It is a lot more freedom. It s a lot more money to make stuff. It s been pretty great. New episodes of The Morning Show premiere on Fridays on Apple TV+.

亚博真人APP (Photo by Disney+)Now that The Mandalorian (Pedro Pascal) has a name and a new mission, the stars would literally seem to be the limit for The Mandalorian. A second season has been in production for some time and it seems the characters have a clear objective. Or do they? As many have been saying since The Child first appeared in the floating crib and was dubbed Baby Yoda by fans, the show has a certain Lone Wolf Cub vibe — particularly as it spent most of its first season wandering the galaxy without a seeming endgame in mind. But what does the future hold for series as Din Djarin (The Mandalorian s true name) and the unnamed child search the galaxy for the latter s homeland? Let’s take a look at five possible directions The Mandalorian could take in its second season.More Wandering the Galaxy(Photo by Disney+)While some found The Mandalorian s format a little too episodic, it allowed for several episodes to be Star Wars short films handled by directors like Bryce Dallas Howard, Deborah Chow, and Rick Famuyiwa. And, honestly, we wouldn t mind if the show kept that format a little longer. It honors the nature of the Lone Wolf Cub manga while giving talented filmmakers the chance to examine seldom-seen corners of the Star Wars Galaxy. Who knew we needed its take on Seven Samurai before The Sanctuary ? And who knew a fight between a Mando and a Jawa sandcrawler would be so essential before Famuyiwa put it to screen? These stories needed the self-contained format to flourish. As creator Jon Favreau said from the get-go, the show was meant to highlight new aliens and new characters, and it definitely did that while still feeling part of the Star Wars milieu by letting Djarin roam. And with Favreau and occasional star Carl Weathers joining the directors ranks in season 2, it seems that self-contained stories will continue into the show s future. That said, it seems unlikely that Djarin s wandering will be as directionless as it was this season. With Moff Gideon (Giancarlo Esposito) at his back and that gang of thieves from The Prisoner looking for revenge — provided they escape the prison barge in quick order — it is possible The Mandalorian and his foundling son will face the past a lot more often.Back to Navarro(Photo by Disney+)Considering both Weathers and Gina Carano will return as Greef Carga and Cara Dune, the continued defense of the planet Navarro will be a recurring theme. For one thing, the Mandalorian Armorer s (Emily Swallow) refusal to leave the culvert means the planet will still be a meeting spot for wayward Mandos. For another, the disposal of the Imperial Remnant on the planet makes it a prime target for other former Imps looking to become warlords. It also, oddly enough, becomes a world the New Republic can approach to extend its sphere of influence into the Outer Rim. And even if we know the Republic s fate 25 years later, there is story to tell in its potential failure to bring peace and justice to the Outer Rim, just like the Empire and Old Republic before it.On a more personal scale, the arrival of another Imperial faction or a New Republic contingent could shed more light on Carga and Dune s pasts. Gideon offered tantalizing details like Dune s Alderaan ancestry and Carga s history as a disgraced magistrate. Was he an Imp himself? We have to admit, there s a lot of story to mine in survivors from Alderaan. Are they as dispersed as the Mandalorians or did they center around Leia Organa and remain core members of the Alliance and the New Republic? And if the latter is the case, why was Dune unable to hold onto that sense of community? Was her homeworld already a distant memory before it was destroyed? An Exploration of Mandalore(Photo by Disney+)With the Darksaber making its first live-action appearance and references to both Mandalore the Great and the Jedi/Mando conflict which led to Darth Revan s attempt to control the galaxy, it almost seems like a visit to the planet Mandalore is inevitable. The world offers so many mysteries in terms of the lore. For one thing: The Way of Djarin s tribe is different from the Mandalorian clans seen in both Star Wars: Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels. Something changed during the Galactic Civil War that led the surviving Mandos to adopt the policy about their helmets — or reclaim an older belief about their warrior religion. But as this change (and the Great Purge) occurred in Djarin s lifetime, there may be Mandalorians still alive who do not adhere to the Way.Which leads us to Sabine Wren and the final moments of Rebels — not that we re expecting Favreau to follow up on that scene s promise. She is, nevertheless, a wrinkle in The Mandalorian’s story, because she has no problem taking of her helmet after the Battle of Endor and once held the Darksaber in her hands. And now that we ve seen the Darksaber in Gideon s possession, certain questions come into play. Add to this the continued presence of Rebels creator Dave Filoni as Favreau s key collaborator, and it seems obvious Djarin will have to face the history of his adopted culture. Then there s that seemingly deleted scene in which Fennec (Ming-Na Wen) told The Mandalorian that he could become a legend. Is it possible he will take possession of the Darksaber and attempt to unite the clans, like Bo-Katan Kryze before him?A Search for The Child s Home(Photo by Disney+)Now that The Child is a foundling, Djarin has a duty to find his rightful home or train the creature in accordance with the Way. This would presumably fuel the wandering in season 2 as he looks for some information regarding The Child s species and planet of origin. To which, we say, good luck!Yoda s species is one of the few remaining mysteries in Star Wars’s incredibly rich lore. Prior to Djarin finding the child, only five other members of species had been seen in Star Wars material: Yoda, Yaddle in Star Wars: Episode I — The Phantom Menace, Vandar Tokare in the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic games, Oteg in the Star Wars: The Old Republic Massive Multiplayer Online game, and Minch in the short story Heart of Darkness. Each are small in stature, but great in power, as they were all greatly attuned to the Force and became Jedis.According to Wookiepedia, creator George Lucas declined to create any detail history for Yoda or his species, simply referring to him as a frog or joking he was the illegitimate son of Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy. Considering the way just about every other Star Wars alien and character has been fleshed out in Expanded Universe or Legends material, this omission would seem very deliberate. At one time, rumors indicated Lucas was developing a Yoda-centered Star Wars film, but all of that fell away when he sold Lucasfilm to Disney. The omission offers Favreau (and Filoni for that matter) the chance to generate some concrete details about the species.Well, that s assuming they really want to get specific. Singling out Yoda s species as something enigmatic maintains the mystery he initially held in The Empire Strikes Back. And as we ve learned over the years, sometimes Star Wars mysteries should remain unsolved.Curiously, the Wookiepedia also refers to Yoda attaining the rank of Jedi Master at age 100, which suggests The Child may become more hearty and capable of learning the Way sooner than Djarin thinks.A Jaunt to Coruscant(Photo by 20th Century Fox)While no longer the galactic capital — the New Republic would choose to move the Senate and executive seat on a rotating basis — Coruscant could easily be one of the places Djarin visits in his search for answers. Presumably, records still exist there and even the ruins of the old Jedi Temple may offer some hints as to The Child s origins. But beyond plot details, visiting Coruscant in The Mandalorian’s era may prove more interesting than his short stay on Tatooine. Is it still a world on the go? Does it still have spectacular night life and a heavy death-stick trade? Or did the Empire make it a silent planet of Sith worshipers? In terms of established canon following the Battle of Endor, it should be an occupied world, with Gran Vizier Mas Amedda (the blue alien who shouted order! during Senate sessions in the prequels) acting as a puppet governor on behalf of the New Republic. That in itself offers some intriguing story possibilities, as Djarin must eventually confront the Republic in his travels. Will the representatives of the new government turn out to be as corrupt and/or incompetent as the Imps? But really, Coruscant represents any previously seen Star Wars world Favreau and his collaborators may want to visit. Now that the show has proved it can expand the universe with new characters and locales, it be afforded a certain license to feature places like Nar Shaddaa, Nal Hutta, Dantooine, Lothal, Crait, and Mandalore. If the show adopts a tighter narrative in its search for The Child s origins, a blend of worlds both new and old — or some only featured in games, cartoons, and comics — will continue The Mandalorian’s expert mix of established Star Wars elements and fantastic new ideas. What more could anyone want from a Star Wars television show? The Mandalorian season 1 is available to stream in its entirety on Disney+.

Following through on good vibes from its premiere at the Toronto Film Festival last weekend, Lorene Scafaria’s Hustlers exceeded even the loftiest expectations for its debut. The numbers may not have been enough to take the top spot from Pennywise, but the film’s opening is an important win for STX Films.Queen of the Crop: Hustlers Pulls In .2 Million(Photo by STX)STX’s previous best opening weekend was Bad Moms back in July 2016, with A Bad Moms Christmas taking the company’s second spot. This year’s surprise success, The Upside, which grossed over 8 million, was also a top grosser for STX. Hustlers’ .2 million start is higher than the total domestic grosses of the company’s other 2019 releases, The Best of Enemies, UglyDolls, and Poms, as well as 14 of its other 23 releases. The 13th-highest opening ever in September shows some real potential for Hustlers if word-of-mouth grows on the 87%-approved stripper crime drama. Six of the 11 films to open this month between million and million have gone on to reach the 0 million mark (though two of them were the kid-friendly Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs films). Jennifer Lopez has never appeared in a live-action film to reach that milestone. Her highest-grossing films to date have been Maid in Manhattan (.01 million) and Monster-in-Law (.9 million). Hustlers is poised to already beat her third-best grosser (Anaconda’s .8 million) and any way you slice it, the million production is likely to be STX’s biggest success ever after Bad Moms — and its second with Lopez after last December’s Second Act grossed more than million globally on just a million budget.Rotten Returns: The Goldfinch DisappointsAs prestige projects go, always beware the ones released in late August and early September. Case in point: Warner Bros.’ The Goldfinch. Technically in award season and even given a premiere at the Toronto Film Festival last week, John Crowley’s two-and-a-half-hour film has been poorly received by critics (24%) and now even moreso by audiences. A .64 million opening weekend is a disaster for the million production, though hardly the first for the studio this year. Godzilla: King of the Monsters, The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part, and The Kitchen have all registered losses of more than million each, and now The Goldfinch looks to be joining them. By the end of its run it should be the lowest-grossing wide release Warner Bros. has released in September since 2005’s disaster A Sound of Thunder, which cost million and grossed just .9 million domestically and .6 million worldwide. The Top 10 and Beyond(Photo by Brooke Palmer/© 2019 WARNER BROS. ENTERTAINMENT INC.)It – the first one – dropped 51.3 percent in its second week, grossing more than million. It: Chapter Two, already well behind the pace of the first, dropped 55 percent to .7 million this weekend. That means it is starting to fall behind the pace of Doctor Strange, which made .9 million in its second weekend, but remains still ahead of Logan, which grossed .1 million in weekend two. Both of those films had 2.9 million after ten days while It: Chapter Two has 3.8 million. That puts its current final estimate between 6-232 million, potentially a full 0 million less than the first chapter. Its worldwide total stands at 3 million and is already well into profit.Running down some of the big winners in the top ten we find that The Lion King has passed .61 billion worldwide and Hobbs Shaw is over 0 million, still nearly a half-billion less than The Fate of the Furious. Universal also has a bonafide hit with Good Boys despite still hoping to cross the 0 million mark globally. Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark is in about the same boat as Good Boys, with million worldwide, and is a hit for Lionsgate. As is Angel Has Fallen, which hasn’t started its global run yet, but is at more than million domestic and even an average total overseas will put it into the black.Roadside’s The Peanut Butter Falcon passed million this weekend, making it the seventh-highest-grossing film in the company’s history. A film that was hoping to replicate that success was Amazon’s Brittany Runs a Marathon, which finally entered wide release this weekend. But the company may have waited too long: Expanding into 757 theaters in its fifth week netted the film .55 million, which may look comparable to Moonlight moving from 176 to 650 theaters in week five and earning .48 million, but that film still had an entire award season in front of it. Last award season Amazon moved Beautiful Boy from 540 to 776 theaters in the same period and it earned .45 million. Brittany is ahead of that film’s pace with .8 million to date and may indeed pass it to become the company’s second-highest grossing film after this summer’s Late Night. This Time Last YearShane Black’s attempted reboot of The Predator took the top spot at the box office with .6 million. It would eventually be outgrossed by the week’s third-place finisher, A Simple Favor, which started with million and finished with .4 million, the second-best multiple of last September (3.34) for a wide release. The Nun fell a whopping 66.1 percent to second place with .2 million. Other new openers included White Boy Rick, which started in fourth with .86 million, and the continued story of Louis Zamperini in Unbroken: Path to Redemption, which opened in tenth to just .23 million. The top ten films grossed million and averaged 57.8% on the Tomatometer. This year’s top ten grossed an estimated .09 million (the 12th-best September top ten ever) and averaged 64.3% with critics. On the Vine: Space, Home, and Downton AbbeyThree vastly different films are looking for audience attention next week. The one original title is Brad Pitt’s sci-fi adventure Ad Astra, which looks to become the highest-grossing film of director James Gray’s career. But will it be enough to cover the more than million budget of the film originally supposed to open in May? Then John Rambo is back in Rambo: Last Blood, as the character returns to the home from the end of Rambo (the fourth entry in Sylvester Stallone’s franchise.) This one is not being screened for critics so look for its Tomatometer score later than usual. Then there is the big-screen continuation of Downton Abbey. Will Focus be able to score its own hit from its legion of fans or will we see just how limited its die-hard base really is? The studio is releasing the film in more than 3,000 theaters. The Full Top 10: September 13–15It: Chapter Two (2019) 62% – .73 million (3.80 million totalHustlers (2019) 87% – .23 million (.23 million total)Angel Has Fallen (2019) 39% – .40 million (.38 million total)Good Boys (2019) 80% – .26 million (.31 million total)The Lion King (2019) 52% – .55 million (3.99 million total)Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw (2019) 67% – .70 million (8.31 million total)Overcomer (2019) 56% – .73 million (.98 million total)The Goldfinch (2019) 25% – .64 million (.64 million total)The Peanut Butter Falcon (2019) 95% – .92 million (.04 million total)Dora and the Lost City of Gold (2019) 85% – .85 million (.74 million total)

亚博真人APP (Photo by Walt Disney Studios)There are going to be helluva lot of remakes and reboots this year, beginning with The Upside (the remake of French film The Intouchables that opened back on January 11) and ending with another version of Little Women (scheduled to open on Christmas Day), this time directed by Greta Gerwig. Between those movies we will get to see What Men Want, Pet Sematary, Dumbo, Hellboy, Shaft, Aladdin, Child’s Play, and Disney’s live-action and CGI remake of The Lion King. Often, critics will look at a slate like that and sigh: Where is the originality? Where are the fresh ideas? But are remakes and reboots really such a bad thing? We turned to the Tomatometer to find out. First, we compiled a data set of over 400 remakes and reboots that have been released since 1978 and then we compared their Tomatometer scores to the films they were remaking or rebooting. What did we learn? The Tomatometer averages of all the remakes (47%) and reboots (53%) in our data set comes nowhere close to their “originals” (81% for movies that have been remade, and 69% for movies that have been “rebooted”). And we discovered that only 40 movies had better Tomatometer scores than the original films they were remaking or rebooting that s less than 10%. Also, if you ever make a successful horror movie, odds are it will be remade at least once. The following breaks down Tomatometer data on 40 years’ worth of remakes and reboots (and we’re already planning to remake this article, so check back next year to read it again). If you’re interested (we know you are) we have a breakdown of how we decided which films were remakes/reboots and the number of movies in each category below.Remakes Average a 47% Tomatometer Score Originals Average 81%(Photo by Warner Bros.)The Tomatometer difference between remakes and their predecessors is a considerable 34%. There are 84 different reasons for this difference: specifically, 84 remakes – among them, A Nightmare on Elm Street, The Bachelor, Original Sin, and The Stepfather – have at least a 50% Tomatometer difference between them and their predecessors. That figure seriously drags the average down.Only 33% of the Remakes in Our Data Set Have a Fresh Tomatometer Score(Photo by Lionsgate courtesy Everett Collection)For every Fresh remake, there are two Rotten ones, which means the bad outweighs the good in the vast remake landscape. These kinds of numbers make us love remakes like The Departed, The Thing, 3:10 to Yuma, Dawn of the Dead, Fright Night, and A Star is Born even more, because they are among the rare 33% that worked. And those films have been rewarded for their efforts: some won Oscars (The Departed), some became cult classics (The Thing), and some made over billion at the worldwide box office (Beauty and the Beast).Only 40 Remakes and Reboots Since 1978 Have a Higher Tomatometer Score Than the Original Film(Photo by Warner Bros. courtesy Everett Collection)What do the Coen brothers (True Grit), Martin Scorsese (The Departed), Jon Favreau (The Jungle Book), Steven Soderbergh (Ocean’s Eleven), and George Miller (Mad Max: Fury Road) have in common? They all directed remakes or reboots that have higher Tomatometer scores than the originals they were based on. (And yes, we’re classifying Fury Road – not a direct sequel or prequel – as a reboot; Miller has called it a “revisiting.”) If you are an ambitious filmmaker looking to build some street cred, you should remake a movie with a low Tomatometer score so you can join this exclusive club. (Also, if you have some free time, you need to watch Werner Herzog’s 2009 remake Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans; it improves upon its predecessor and features Nicolas Cage staring at an iguana).2005 Had More Theatrically Released Remakes and Reboots Than Any Other Year(Photo by Universal courtesy Everett Collection)In 2005, there were 18 remakes, two reboots (Batman Begins, The Punisher), and three television adaptations (The Honeymooners, Aeon Flux, Bewitched) that hit the big screens. The overall Tomatometer score for these films is 44%, and only seven of them – including Batman Begins, War of the Worlds, and King Kong – could muster Fresh scores. You might also remember this decade, the 2000s, as the era in which seemingly every single successful horror movie of the 1970s and 1980s was remade. 2005 did its part to help, with The Fog, House of Wax, Dark Water, and The Amityville Horror all coming out and receiving Rotten scores.2006 was a close second with 18 remakes and two reboots (Superman Returns, Casino Royale) released theatrically as well. However, we gave 2005 the edge, because on top of the remakes and reboots, three television adaptations were released theatrically, while 2006 had none. The 1980s Knew How to Remake Movies(Photo by Universal courtesy Everett Collection)When compared to the 1990s (49%), 2000s (41%), and 2010s (45% so far), the 1980s were a most excellent time for remakes – the decade’s remakes have a Tomatometer average of 57%. Movies like The Fly, The Thing, Little Shop of Horrors, No Way Out, Dead of Winter, Scrooged, Scarface, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, and Down and Out in Beverly Hills are all Fresh and recognized as classics of their genre. The fact that the majority of the remakes from the decade (58% of them) have Fresh Tomatometer scores speaks volumes for the 1980s and proves there could be hope for future decades. It’s too bad that remakes of 1980s movies themselves average a very Rotten 37%.Horror is the Most Remade Genre(Photo by Universal courtesy Everett Collection)Since 1978, well over 100 Tomatometer-rated horror films have been remade, and the result is a scarily Rotten 39% Tomatometer average for them. Nothing is sacred in horror – films fall prey to multiple remakes, reboots, or in the case of Evil Dead 2, a remake sequel (a.k.a. “requel”). Even oft-remade directors like John Carpenter (Halloween, Assault on Precinct 13, The Fog) aren’t afraid of remaking movies themselves (The Thing, Village of the Damned), which means there are directors who are remaking horror movies while other directors are remaking their films. And the circle of horror life goes on.Reboots Have Higher Tomatometer Averages than Remakes(Photo by Chuck Zlotnick/Columbia Pictures)With Mad Max: Fury Road (2015), Star Trek (2009), Dredd (2012), Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017), and Casino Royale (2006) leading the way, it’s clear why reboots have higher Tomatometer averages than remakes (53% vs. 47%). What exactly is a reboot? It’s a movie like Star Trek that restarts an established series with different actors and a new storyline. Also, in another improvement from remakes, only 56% of reboots have Rotten Tomatometer scores, and the average difference between them and their predecessors is only 16% (as opposed to 34% for remakes). The James Bond Franchise Has Mastered the Reboot(Photo by Sony Pictures courtesy Everett Collection)The James Bond franchise has been around for 56 years and 26 films, largely because it has embraced the reboot. Five of the six Bond reboots (including Sean Connery’s return after George Lazenby’s On Her Majesty’s Secret Service) have had equal or higher Tomatometer scores than the movies before them. When averaged, the six reboots (On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, Diamonds Are Forever, Live and Let Die, The Living Daylights, Goldeneye, and Casino Royale) have an excellent Tomatometer average of 75%, which is higher than the Tomatometer averages (64%) of the movies that come before the reboots. If you are producer looking to restart a franchise, study the Bond series. (We didn’t include Never Say Never Again because it isn’t MGM Bond canon.)Disney is the King of 21st-Century Remakes(Photo by Walt Disney Pictures)Disney has had their fair share of Rotten remakes (The Shaggy Dog, The Three Musketeers, That Darn Cat, Flubber) but that hasn’t stopped them from perfecting the craft of remaking in recent years. Since 2010, they’ve rolled out wildly successful remakes of Alice in Wonderland, Maleficent, Cinderella, The Jungle Book, Pete’s Dragon, and Beauty and the Beast. These remakes have a Fresh Tomatometer average of 73% and have given Disney the confidence it needs to continue, with new remakes of The Lion King, Aladdin, and Dumbo hitting theaters this year.Do Remakes or Reboots Win Academy Awards?(Photo by Warner Bros.)Only three remakes – The Mutiny on the Bounty (1935), Ben-Hur (1959), and The Departed (2006) – can boast an Academy Award for Best Picture, meaning remakes have only won 3.2% of the Best Picture Academy Awards since 1927. Considering that A-list directors like the Coen brothers, Werner Herzog, Peter Jackson, Christopher Nolan, Kenneth Branagh, David Fincher, Tim Burton, Steven Spielberg, and Terry Gilliam have tackled remakes, it’s surprising that number isn’t bigger. Will Bradley Cooper’s remake of A Star is Born join these three elite remakes?DATA SET CRITERIAWhat is a remake? It is a movie with the same story and title (for the most part) as an earlier film. What is a reboot? A reboot is a new start to an already created fictional world. For example, 2009’s Star Trek is a reboot because it features familiar characters in a brand new adventure. It’s not the same story twice.374 Remakes and 43 Reboots306 remakes and their originals both had Tomatometer scores68 remakes had Tomatometer scores while their originals didn’t (they weren’t included in the first three facts)
