So, we did a deep Tomatometer dive into over 80 action franchises and found 12 Fresh series that punched, kicked, and sprinted their way ahead of the pack.Since John Wick: Chapter 3 Parabellum is the third film in the Wick saga, we decided to focus on action franchises with at least three Tomatometer-rated films that told a continuous story. We split up the Spider-Man, Planet of the Apes, James Bond, and Batman franchises into chunks, as they had multiple directors, reboots, and often happened in different universes. For example, we looked at the Sean Connery Bond films as a separate entity from the Daniel Craig Bond films, and the Christopher Nolan Batman films as separate from the 1980s and 90s movies; we did however include Fury Road with the original Mad Max trilogy, as it centers on the same Max – albeit played by a different actor – and is directed by George Miller. Also: sci-fi, fantasy, and animated films were out; superhero flicks were in.Basically, we were hoping for an eclectic list and we got one!Will Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy be ranked higher than Steven Spielberg’s Indiana Jones franchise? Can any action franchise defeat Miller’s Mad Max quartet? How in the hell is Mission Impossible not on this list?! (Sorry, blame the just Fresh first Mission Impossible, and the Rotten Mission Impossible 2.) Check out the list below and let us know which action franchises you love in the comments.12. Iron Man (2008 2013)(Photo by @ Paramount)Tomatometer Average: 81.7%Movies: Iron Man (2008) 94%, Iron Man 2 (2010) 72%, Iron Man 3 (2013) 79%Highest Rated Film: Iron Man (2008) 94%Lowest Rated Film: Iron Man 2 (2010) 72%In 2008, the Jon Favreau-directed Iron Man became a smash hit that was beloved by critics and audiences alike. The 93% Tomatometer-rated film featured Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark, a “genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist” who becomes the superhero Iron Man, and it kicked off the Marvel Cinematic Universe. So, it s significant. Less significant, though still very well regarded, are the movie s two Certified Fresh follow-ups: Iron Man 2, also directed by Favreau, and Shane Black s Iron Man 3. The sequels couldn’t recapture the Tomatometer heights of the first film, but they were box office blockbusters – Iron Man 3 is the seventh highest-grossing MCU movie, just behind Captain Marvel – with high enough Tomatometer scores to land the franchise at the 12th spot on our list.11. Spider-Man (2002 2007)Tomatometer Average: 82%Movies: Spider-Man (2002) 90%, Spider-Man 2 (2004) 93%, Spider-Man 3 (2007) 63%Highest Rated Film: Spider-Man 2 (2004) 93%Lowest Rated film: Spider-Man 3 (2007) 63%With all the superhero films that have been released since 2002, it’s easy to forget how popular Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy was in the 2000s. In 2002, the 90% Tomatometer-rated Spider-Man was a massive success that cleared 0 million in its opening weekend (which was huge at the time) and introduced us to Tobey Maguire’s amazingly earnest take on the popular web-slinger. It was followed up by the 93% Tomatometer-rated Spider-Man 2, which is one of the most critically beloved sequels of all time. The franchise took a bit of dip in 2007, with Spider-Man 3 – OK, a bit might be understating it. However, its Fresh score of 63% was just enough to ensure its placement in this list. Kicking off in 1985, Chan directed Police Story, which introduced the world to Sergeant Chan Ka-Kui (Chan), an incredibly likable and athletic cop who engages in the greatest shopping mall fight ever. The acclaimed Police Story 2 (92% on the Tomatometer) was also a huge success and featured the greatest playground fight ever (are you sensing a trend?). Basically, the four core Police Story movies starring Jackie Chan feature all-time great action scenes – made great because of the brilliance of Chan and his commitment to hurting himself to entertain audiences. (Note, while Supercop was released in 1992, it didn t get a theatrical release in the U.S. until 1996.)9. Sean Connery Bond Films (1962 1971)Tomatometer Average: 85.3%Movies: Dr. No (1962) 95%, From Russia With Love (1963) 95%, Goldfinger (1964) 99%, Thunderball (1965) 87%, You Only Live Twice (1967) 73%, Diamonds Are Forever (1971) 64%Highest Rated Film: Goldfinger (1964) 99%Lowest Rated Film: Diamonds Are Forever (1971) 64%Bond. Sean Connery’s James Bond. The action world was changed forever when Dr. No was released in 1962. The movie, Certified Fresh at 96%, was an adaptation of Ian Fleming’s spy novel and the first to feature Sean Connery as the smooth-talking badass who traveled the world, killed with ease, and wooed way too many women. Peaking with the classic 97% Tomatometer-rated Goldfinger, Connery s six Bond films set a new standard for action in the 1960s, shooting on location around the world and featuring a “hero” who had a literal license to kill.8. Ip Man (2010 2016)(Photo by © Well Go USA / courtesy Everett Collection)Tomatometer Average: 86.3%Movies: Ip Man (2008) 86%, Yip Man 2 (2010) 97%, Ip Man 3 (2015) 76%Highest Rated: Yip Man 2 (2010) 97%Lowest Rated: Ip Man 3 (2015) 76%Many non-action film fans may only know Ip Man star Donnie Yen from Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, XXX: Return of Xander Cage, or Blade 2. However, Yen is an action icon who has been hurting onscreen henchmen since the early 1990s. That’s why it’s awesome to include on this list the Wilson Yip-directed Ip Man franchise, which tells the story of Ip Man, the famous martial artist who mentored Bruce Lee and is considered the grandfather of the Kung Fu hybrid Wing Chun. The trilogy of films have allowed Yen to engage in some truly wicked brawls that showcase his martial arts prowess and ability to learn an insane amount of fight choreography. (Note, we are not including this year s, Master Z: Ip Man legacy, as it does not feature Yen and is a spin-off set in the same universe rather than directly part of the series.)7. Indiana Jones (1981 2008)Tomatometer Average: 86.5%Movies: Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) 95%, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984) 84%, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989) 88%, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008) 78%Highest Rated: Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) 95%Lowest Rated: Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008) 78%We know many people think Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, the fourth entry in the Indiana Jones franchise, nuked the goodwill of the original trilogy. However, its Certified Fresh 78% Tomatometer score got the franchise to swing into the top 10 where it deserves to be — so it’s not all bad. Harrison Ford’s portrayal of the archaeologist who spends his days teaching college students and weekends globetrotting to deadly locations in hunt of ancient artifacts, still feels fresh and full of charm. It also helps that Steven Spielberg directed all four movies and loaded them with action-packed set pieces, memorable characters, and some very twisted moments – yes, this is a family flick featuring hearts being pulled from people’s chests.6. The Avengers (2012 2019)Tomatometer Average: 86.5%Movies: Marvel's the Avengers (2012) 91%, Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015) 76%, Avengers: Infinity War (2018) 85%, Avengers: Endgame (2019) 94%Highest Rated: Avengers: Endgame (2019) 94%Lowest Rated: Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015) 76%The Avengers franchise made the pointy end of the list because of the two critically beloved blockbusters that bookend the franchise. Joss Whedon’s Marvel’s The Avengers, 92% on the Tomatometer, was a massive blockbuster that proved a movie featuring the Marvel Cinematic Universe s mightiest heroes could be funny, surprising, and most importantly, capable of giving every superhero a moment to shine (except for the zombie Hawkeye thing). Most recently, the Russos-directed Avengers: Endgame pulled off an equally impressive feat by giving what feels like 7,000 characters something to do in a narrative that makes logical sense. And it s the highest-rated movie in the franchise, Certified Fresh at 95%.5. Captain America (2011 2016)(Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, @ Marvel Studios)Tomatometer Average: 87%Movies: Captain America: The First Avenger (2011) 80%, Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014) 90%, Captain America: Civil War (2016) 90%Highest Rated: Captain America: Civil War (2016) 90%Lowest Rated: Captain America: The First Avenger (2011) 80%The Captain America franchise kicked off in 2012 with the Certified Fresh Captain America: The First Avenger, 80% on the Tomatometer. The Joe Johnston-directed superhero origin story struck a chord with audiences who loved its nostalgic vibe – Johnston directed The Rocketeer and it showed – and lead performance by Chris Evans. But, it wasn’t until 2014 that the Russo brothers’ Captain America: The Winter Soldier (90% on the Tomatometer) propelled the franchise into the critical elite. The Russos struck gold again in 2016 with the Captain America: Civil War; its Tomatometer score of 91% makes Captain America the only superhero franchise to have its Tomatometer score improve with each installment.4. John Wick (2014 2019)Tomatometer Average: 88%Movies: John Wick (2014) 86%, John Wick: Chapter 2 (2017) 89%, John Wick: Chapter 3 -- Parabellum (2019) 89%Highest Rated: John Wick: Chapter 2 (2017) 89%Lowest Rated: John Wick (2014) 86%Much like the immortal Keanu Reeves, the John Wick franchise keeps getting better with age. Kicking off in 2014, the 86% Tomatometer-rated John Wick introduced the world to an unstoppable assassin who wiped out hundreds of well-groomed henchman in his quest to get revenge on the people who killed his adorable puppy. His quest for revenge lead him to the 89% and 88%-Tomatometer rated John Wick: Chapter 2 and John Wick: Chapter 3 Parabellum, which also feature him killing hundreds of well-groomed henchman and assassins who want him dead. Guided by director Chad Stahelski (and co-director David Leitch for the first film), the trilogy has remained incredibly consistent, and we’re hoping the duo of Stahelski and Reeves keeps up the high-scoring work when Chapter 4 is released in 2021.3. Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011 2017)(Photo by © 20th Century Fox Film Corp. )Tomatometer Average: 88.3%Movies: Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011) 82%, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014) 90%, War for the Planet of the Apes (2017) 94%Highest Rated: War for the Planet of the Apes (2017) 94%Lowest Rated: Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011) 82%OK, so we re bending the no sci-fi rule here a touch, given the technology to enhance apes intelligence doesn t yet exist. But, aside from that, this series is kept relatively grounded (or, at least, tree-bound). Director Rupert Wyatt kicked off the Apes reboot trilogy with Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011), which set up the heroic journey of Caesar (another incredible performance-capture performance from Andy Serkis). The successful prequel/reboot was followed up by the even more successful Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (90%) and War for the Planet of the Apes (93%), which continued Caesar s story, and gave thousands of visual effects artists plenty of work. Matt Reeves directed the two later films, and his insistence of shooting at actual locations, instead of sound stages, made the films look authentic, real, and dangerous. Between the large battles, incredible CGI and committed performances, this trilogy was an inventive, action-packed surprise.2. The Dark Knight (2005 2012)Tomatometer Average: 88.3%Movies: Batman Begins (2005) 84%, The Dark Knight (2008) 94%, The Dark Knight Rises (2012) 87%Highest Rated: The Dark Knight (2008) 94%Lowest Rated: Batman Begins (2005) 84%*The Dark Knight Trilogy and the Rise of the Planet of the Apes Trilogy both have 88.3% Tomatometer averages. The Dark Knight Trilogy has a higher ranking because it has more reviews (967 897).Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Trilogy is the highest Tomatometer-rated superhero franchise ever – impressive, considering expectations were low for 2005’s Batman Begins after Batman Robin put a freeze on the franchise in 1997. However, DC fans and audiences soon learned that Nolan was the right person to guide Batman through three films that took on a grittier tone, featured beautiful cinematography, and gave the world an all-time-great performance by Heath Ledger as the Joker in The Dark Knight. Ledger’s portrayal won him a posthumous Academy Award in 2009 and helped people realize that superhero movies could also be taken ‘so serious.’1. Mad Max (1979 2015)Tomatometer Average: 91.25%Movies: Mad Max (1979) 90%, Mad Max 2 (1981) 94%, Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (1985) 80%, Mad Max: Fury Road (2015) 97%Highest Rated: Mad Max 2 (1981) 94%Lowest Rated: Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (1985) 80%George Miller’s Mad Max trilogy featuring Mel Gibson as the titular Max, is a perfect example of  a handmade action franchise. The mayhem in the Mad Max world felt primal (and feral), which is a testament to Miller’s direction and a fearless crew who didn’t mind blowing up dozens of vehicles. If you haven’t seen Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior, Certified Fresh at 98%, we totally recommend it. Why? Just about everyone has had an opinion on who should play these iconic comic book characters on screen, and they ve been debated, scrutinized, and celebrated in every corner of the internet. But it may surprise some to learn these difficult choices have all rested in the hands of one woman. Over the course of 12 years, 24 films, and hundreds of roles, casting director Sarah Halley Finn has been the unseen force pumping the lifeblood directly into the heart of the MCU. Today, it may seem like a no-brainer now to cast RDJ as Tony Stark or Chris Pratt as Star-Lord, but in the early days, neither name was at the top of the Marvel wish list. It was thanks to Halley Finn s foresight and persistence that both actors were paired with their roles, but the MCU s lead casting director insists her efforts are a collaborative process.  Casting over 1,000 roles has allowed Finn to accumulate a few stories of near-castings and tales of actors who took a little more convincing to say yes, some of which she shared with us when we chatted with her a few weeks ago. Read on for our extended conversation with Sarah Halley Finn, in which she chats about casting not only RDJ and Pratt, but also some yet-to-be-cast actors she hopes to add to the ever-growing universe. Iron Man: He wasn t exactly known as an action hero. (Photo by Marvel Studios) The casting is always this collaborative process with the director and the writers and the producers, each trying to find the absolutely perfect embodiment of this character. And as we were working on Iron Man for a couple of months, we were really talking about a lot of different people that could play the part. But we kept coming back to Downey. Of course, everything you see onscreen is the reason why we kept thinking about him. And ultimately, because it wasn t a slam dunk at the time he tested for it. He had been known for Oscar-nominated work. He was an incredible actor. He wasn t exactly known as an action hero. This was a very different kind of role, and he hadn t been doing the same work for a few years, so he was willing to screen test. And that was the proposal that we made to our people as a way to just find out if it was really the way to go for the character. So because he agreed to screen test, we worked on it fast, and really, he came onto the soundstage in high spirits. I remember walking him in and I remember it so crystal clear   he came in high spirits. He knew what he wanted to do. I think he felt good, and I think as soon as he said the words, we all knew we had arrived. Captain America: No one else could play Steve Rogers except him. (Photo by Marvel Studios) After Chris Evans turned us down, I think it was the creatives who made that happen. It s Kevin Feige, it s Joe [Johnston]. It was really about helping him understand that there is an exciting character to play. It was not just an idea. He might have had a thought of what this means in the comic book universe but not what ideas it was about. But I know he also considered what this represented for his life and all those kinds of considerations you re aware of that and what he was weighing at the time. But it was really the creative engagement detailing about how he was the perfect person to bring this character to life, how no one else could play Steve Rogers except him and why, and what qualities he had that were perfect for it. And then they got creatively engaged to the point where it s harder to say no. Hulk: I had worked with Mark off-Broadway in New York, and it was really exciting when he jumped in. (Photo by Marvel Studios) Hulk was already in production when I came onto Iron Man, so I was not involved in casting [Edward Norton], and I think for whatever reasons, [Norton] was not involved when I was doing Avengers. So again, it was talking to Joss [Whedon], talking to Kevin, my team. How do we see this character now? What are his qualities? What are we looking for? Who is the best person to bring him to life? I had worked with Mark forever ago, off-Broadway in New York, and I had known him for a long, long time. And it was really exciting when he jumped in, and jumped in quickly. He was cast right before San Diego Comic-Con correct?  Yes, but there are hours and hours of stories for every single person, and that happens with more people than you might think, because one of the things is these actors aren t just sent a script. It s not like they re just sent a script that they can say yes or no to it. The scripts are secret. They re confidential. They get hand-delivered with a security guard and they re waiting in the car while you read. It s really sometimes a long process and of engagement with the creatives, with the director, and with Kevin [Feige], to help people understand the world. Maybe there s some artwork, maybe there are some examples of things that can get them to understand what they re going to be playing, but it s not always as easy as it might seem. Thor: Yes, both Liam and Chris Hemsworth read and were the loveliest guys. (Photo by Marvel Studios) It took months. In truth, I have not slept in 10 years. Are you kidding? [Laughs] Yes, both [Liam and Chris Hemsworth] read and were the loveliest guys. But for Thor, Liam was young. He was so young at the time, and it was a long process, and hopefully, we ve gotten it right. But we ve got Liam in our sights. We ll find something for him. [Laughs] It seems like there was no one else to play that part now, but when we were approaching Thor with Kenneth Branagh, we knew this guy had to be part Shakespearean. Asgard had to exist in a complete otherworld and yet be utterly relatable and human. And that was a very difficult combination. And the material we were using for auditions, was a Shakespeare scene. So it took some callbacks, and some work, to really feel like we had arrived there. And then Thor changed entirely with Thor: Ragnorok. Yeah, it s amazing and it s really gratifying for me, because I think another hope when we re casting these roles is that we re going to find actors who have the range to go a really long distance. And I think when Chris Hemsworth broke, we knew he was a movie star, but I don t think people saw in him the performance he just gave in Thor: Ragnarok and Endgame. To see him make that leap to comedy and the way the audiences responded to him, it was so exciting. It s like an actor you know, and yet, you re discovering him in completely a new way, and really fun to be able to surround him with interesting characters like Korg and all the other characters that you see him interact with. Star-Lord: We had to find somebody who was really sympathetic but also understood the humor, pace, and rhythms. (Photo by Marvel Studios) Actually [Chris Pratt] came up after he read because there were a lot of things we were trying to accomplish. We really want this to be perfect. We wanted it to be perfect for us, and a movie for the fans, and it was a long search on Guardians of the Galaxy. It doesn t seem like a difficult role, but it s a difficult role. He s heroic, but he s a bit childish. He comes into his own. He s very funny, and he also has this deep issue that he struggles with abandonment from his father and his childhood so there s a lot of layers that go in. We had to find somebody who was really sympathetic but also understood the humor, pace, and rhythms; and could bring all of the dimensions of the character to life. Chris was known for comedy; he wasn t necessarily known as heroic. He also wasn t known as an action guy. Chris had done another audition for me for another Marvel film, and I had seen those kinds of heroic noble qualities in him, and I knew he had the comedy. And I had seen Zero Dark Thirty and Moneyball, so I knew he could bring the action element to the role.And so, I kept bringing it up to James, to the point where James I read in a print [magazine] called me annoying and didn t really see him for the role. He claims that I tricked him. I don t really remember it that way. [Laughs]  It just so happened that Pratt was coming to read and James was there at the same time. So, yeah. [Laughs] Well, the one thing I will say, what s great about James is that he was very public on the press tour to be like, No, this is Sarah. I didn t see it, but I m so glad she made me do it. That s also great about working with him. It was very generous of him to be as open as he was about the process. And frankly, we had a lot of humor and that kind of camaraderie throughout the casting process. It really helped, and it helped him work with Chris. It helped Dave Bautista, who hadn t had a lot of acting roles, feel comfortable. And I think that his energy, his humor, his compassion, as an artist and as a director, was infused throughout the whole production. I think you can feel that in all the performances. Once we cast Chris [Pratt], we were able to think about the qualities that he brought to the role, and then how to juxtapose that and how to support that in different ways to make the film interesting. So with [Dave Bautista], we knew that their chemistry was going to be really important, for Drax and Star-Lord to have something. And again, we did some mix and matches. We tried different ideas, but Dave and Chris really clicked. And so, it was being able to see that. And then, conversely, with Zoe [Saldana], we knew we really wanted somebody strong who was going to go up against him and give him a run for his money in a certain way, and she really brought that. I think that you need to present the voice as a fully dimensional, living, breathing character, especially with someone like Rocket. There s incredible pathos he brings, and he s damaged and wounded. And yet, you want to care for him, and you want to love him, and you want to laugh with him. And I think the audience got completely behind him. Basically, when we started thinking about the character, we re looking for the essential qualities. Who do we want to convey this emotion? How does the director want that character to come to life? So with Rocket, we had a very good idea of what James wanted, but we went through over a hundred voices, probably more. And that s my team, which is amazing, and taking James thoughts and notes. And we asked the other departments to give us any visual aids we could start pairing and mixing and matching a wide range of vocal qualities, of temperaments, of cadence, to try to see what would and all that comes together for how we could best personify that role. [Laughs] Those guys Asa Butterfield, Timothée Chalamet, and even Tom Holland have been really open about discussing it. Yeah, well they re all amazingly talented actors. I can say that much. They re all amazingly talented actors, but again, it was a role that we were trying to combine very specific elements and a range of qualities. So, for various reasons, I think the search went on for over a year just to cast that one role. And I think they ve all gone on and done great, and I think Tom has really done right by the character. You re still going, What are the essential qualities we re looking for and who s the best person to bring that to life? And in Black Panther, Michael B. Jordan s role was so poignant. It captured everything we hoped to do, which is create a multi-dimensional character who is not one-sided and who audiences can understand even if they re doing bad things. New Faces in the MCU: We can look anywhere. Marvel is so open. We have a deaf actress, Lauren Ridloff, who joined The Eternals, and right now we re looking for an 18-year-old Muslim-Pakistani female. It is beyond exciting. Casting Disney+: We re really approaching the streaming shows like movies. Yeah, it s very early but we re really approaching the streaming shows like movies. They re going to be very satisfying, I hope. We re really not looking at them any differently. They re incredible storytelling. We have incredible writers. We re putting together incredible casts, incredible directors. Very ambitious visions for these shows and the present a lot of new challenges but I m really excited. And I had a moment of panic thinking, Oh, my God, I m going to make the most boring superhero ever. What s it going to be? Nobody s going to relate to it. But [knocks wood] it s worked out well, and I think for these actors, there s a lot to play. There s a huge range to a lot of these characters, and sometimes it s just something really different. Look at what Cate Blanchett did in Thor: Ragnarok. It was fantastic. But Kevin and the mindset at Marvel is very collaborative. It s collaborative with the directors, it s collaborating with the actors. Creatively, they re all able to play in the sandbox. They re able to stretch and do something that might be completely different. So for someone like Brie Larson, yes, it s a leap to go from Room to Captain Marvel, but the way she embraced that character was complete, you know? She did the physical training. She researched it, she dug in with the directors and wanted to find out how to create this character in the way that I think actors approach in a role. So yeah, it was the whole process for her and for every actor to who takes on one of these roles. A Wish List for The Female Avengers? I don t know. I don t know if I can give you a few? In Hollywood (2019) 85% Quentin Tarantino says he s going to call it quits after 10 films, and this week s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood brings us one movie closer to his retirement. Fortunately, critics say the film is Tarantino in solid form, a passion project that reflects the director s love for Hollywood and the moviemaking industry at large. Set in 1969, the story centers on Leonardo DiCaprio s Rick Dalton, a washed-up TV star facing down his own impending irrelevance and the prospect of moving overseas to star in what would eventually come to be known as a Spaghetti Western. His best friend is his longtime stunt double, Brad Pitt s Cliff Booth, and together the pair attempt to navigate the changing industry that employs them and embark on mini-adventures through Tarantino s lovingly recreated Los Angeles, until an explosive climax brings the film s various narrative threads together. Critics say Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is an affectionate ode to and a fantastical reimagining of the Hollywood of 1969; while its plot may take its sweet time and meander a little bit, and while it may find some of Tarantino s trademark flourishes just a touch muted, it s a deeply personal work that s more than the sum of its snappy banter and unexpected narrative surprises.

Are the comic book nods just another distraction from the God of Mischief? And was last week s time bomb really just a misdirection from the Variant s true goal? Let s take a look at this week s episode and see if we can t suss out some good answers to these questions.Spoiler Alert: The following reveals details of the third episode of Loki season 1. Stop here if you have not watched Lamentis. Speculation includes information from Marvel comic books and may also be considered spoilers to some.Is Sylvie a Loki Variant?(Photo by Marvel Studios)Despite spending an hour with Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino), we re still unsure if she s a variant of Loki or something else entirely. To be fair, she self-identifies as a variant, but nevertheless continues to claim that she is something different. Also, we couldn t help but notice she explains her power and not her past when Loki asks for a token of trust.The name she s chosen to use is an obvious nod to Sylvie Lushton, a Marvel Comics character introduced in 2009 who also goes by the name of Enchantress — not be confused with Amora, the earlier Marvel Enchantress, or DC Comics Enchantress, June Moone, played by Cara Delevingne in Suicide Squad. Although an average young woman from Oklahoma, Sylvie s fortunes changed when Asgardia, a modernized version of Asgard its people used after the fall of their homerealm, settled in a geosynchronous orbit above her hometown. She soon developed powers of her own, which, it turned out, were gifted to her by Loki for some unknown purpose. When he later explain himself, Loki says she is merely a whim because he wondered what would happen if a human suspected they were Asgardian. Also, Loki seemed to enjoy the fact she was susceptible to dashed hopes.(Photo by Marvel Studios)Favoring green clothing and blonde hair, the Marvel Cinematic Universe Sylvie certainly resembles the Marvel Comics version (particularly after she abandons the horns during the fight on the train), but diverts in a couple of key ways. For one, a brief shot in episode 2 refers to her as Sylvie Laufeydottir, indicating she is indeed a Loki variant who presented as female very early in her existence. From what little she offers Loki on the train, we also get the impression she did not have much of a family either in Jotunheim or Asgard; she refers to memories of her mother as something out of a dream. Second, her primary power appears to be something Loki terms as an enchantment. As she later explains, she gets into people s memories via physical contact and begins a dance within them to get what she wants. But, as she mentions, the other person is also in control. Sort of. This differs wildly from Sylvie Luston s varied suite of powers.Also, we can t help but notice she instinctively chooses to fight whenever a conflict presents itself.All of which should add up to Sylvie not being Loki; in fact, there s still room for her to be a variant of Amora or even Sylvie Lushton. Hell, we ll even throw in the possibility of Angela for good measure. But we re still not inclined to go in this direction yet because Loki lies; therefore, everything Sylvie has said so far could just as easily be a lie.But then there s the reference to being on a mission and sticking with it even above her natural hedonistic tendencies. All Rights Reserved.)Last week, Hunter C-20 (Sasha Lane) kept saying it s all real, which led us to believe Sylvie somehow revealed to her that she was not created by the Time-Keepers but was, really, a variant press-ganged into working on their behalf.This appears to be true as she tells Loki she dug into C-20 s memories from before she worked for the TVA in order to get the location of the Time-Keepers special elevator. While we are keeping the Loki tendency to lie in mind, that we actually see Sylvie using C-20 s memories of margaritas leads us to believe this is, in fact, the truth. Also, it s just narrative satisfying for Loki to discover everything Miss Minutes (Tara Strong) told him about TVA history is a lie.If the Time-Keepers have been forcing variants into their service, what is their true aim? One option is the simple preservation of their own existence by manipulating the timeline. If we accept the multiversal war as a truth within their larger lie, it is possible they were destined to lose and use the Sacred Timeline as a means of forestalling their defeat. But even within that, there is some ambiguity about their intentions as the stated goal of avoiding another war could still be benevolent. Then again, co-opting variants and robbing them of their memories hardly sounds like something impossibly powerful but benevolent beings would do.Well, presuming they even really exist and are not part of a massive con perpetrated by Ravonna Renslayer (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) and, potentially, Kang (Jonathan Majors).And since we re talking about the Time-Keepers, was Sylvie s time-bomb really just a means of distracting enough of the TVA to get to them? The bomb seemingly caused enough havoc as to upend the Sacred Timeline entirely — which would be as worthy an objective as actually killing the Time-Keepers themselves. Hopefully, we ll learn more about the bomb s effects next week.The Variants Encounter the Mysteries of Lamentis-1(Photo by Marvel Studios)Most of the episode takes place on the soon-to-be destroyed Lamentis-1. The name Lamentis is a relatively obscure pull as a similar world appeared in exactly one Marvel Comic — Annihilation: Conquest Prologue #1. As part of the 2007 Marvel event storyline, Annihilation, it sees the techno-organic Phalanx forming a barrier along the edges of Kree-controlled space. Lamentis is an outworld on the extreme edge of their borders, so Quasar — already there on a mission — sees the shockwave as it passes the planet on its way to the border.The actual Annihilation story features Annihilus, a perennial Fantastic Four foe, attempting to expand his empire by reaching into the positive matter universe and using the negative-charge counterpart to the Power Cosmic (something we ll talk about another time). But by the point of Annihilation: Conquest Prologue #1, he had been defeated and was recuperating in the safety of the Negative Zone, a realm which may matter to the eventual Fantastic Four film.With the comic book mentioning Annihulus and featuring both the Phanalax and Quasar (and the Spaceknights for that matter), invoking the planet Lamentis in this episode could indicate some future happenings in the MCU. The Phalanx, for example, is generally associated with the X-Men. But as with everything else on Loki, it could be also be a master class in misdirection.But there are some questions worth asking about Lamentis-1 and how it relates to the MCU. Is it in Kree-space? None of the humanoids we saw in the episode were blue, the general skin tone of the Kree in the MCU. But being blue is not a requirement to be Kree and nothing says Lamentis has to be a Kree colony for it to be controlled by the Kree — well, presuming the Kree treaty with the Nova Corps still stands in 2077. If it s not Kree at all, then from where do all the humanoids Loki and Sylvie encounter originate? Is the show suggesting Earthers will be out among the stars in few decades? Granted, that is possible in the MCU with all the aliens and alien tech known to the world.Since Sylvie can only hide in naturally occurring cataclysms, we know no force purposely brought destruction to Lamentis-1, but the end of the Ark sure looked purposeful. Is it possible the Time-Keepers (or something else) were playing some long game to keep any survivors from escaping that world? Love Is a Dagger (Photo by Marvel Studios)While Loki s metaphor for love is not as profound as he thinks, it does lead to an interesting new wrinkle about the character — love isn t really something he s familiar with. Sure, there is the familial love Frigga (Rene Russo) showed him throughout her life, but that s clearly not the sort of thing he or Sylvie were discussing. Thanks to his experiences, if not his nature, Loki cannot perceive romantic love as anything other than a long con or, indeed, a weapon. And though he indicates some short affairs — he also self-identifies as bisexual — the notion of a predominately aromatic protagonist is definitely appealing. In the middle of Marvel Studios most technically ambitious hour of television yet, it almost makes sense to declare it will also take romantic stakes off the table for the character going forward. No one, say a Doctor Doom or Annihilus, can ever threaten the life of Loki s version of Jane Foster or Luke Cage. That person does not exist.It would definitely be a bold storytelling choice considering how important romantic stakes tend to be in television shows, but it is also possible this episode s discussion of romantic love is merely winding-up for a punchline about Loki loving himself. Well, provided Sylvie is a Loki variant.Is an Old Loki in the Wind?(Photo by Chuck Zlotnick. ©Marvel Studios 2021. All Rights Reserved.)As we ve now have a tradition of highlighting characters who could appear in Loki s future, this week s candidate is a future Loki. Appearing in the Loki: Agent of Asgard series as King Loki or Old Loki, this variant comes from a future where Earth is in ashes thanks to his scheming, but Thor ascended to the throne of Asgard and ushered in an era of peace among the other Realms. In the early part of the series, Old Loki stated to the ruling triumvirate of Asgardia, the All-Mother, that he merely wished to bring about this era of peace sooner by forcing his younger self to accept the villainous path. The All-Mother agreed to assist even as they locked him up in Asgardia s dungeon.His existence — and his ability to work around the All-Mother s Loki-proof prison cell — brings us back to Sylvie s mission. Is she acting on orders from Loki s future self? Did he create her to appear as a Loki variant to the TVA? And, if so, is all of this just really part of his infinitely-long game to get control of the Time-Keepers power?(Photo by Gareth Cattermole/Getty Images for Disney)To a certain extent, it is more likely than Kang revealing himself. Some already believe Richard E. Grant (pictured) — whose first appearance is expected in next week s episode and who appeared as General Pryde in Disney film Star Wars: Episode IX The Rise of Skywalker — will emerge as Old Loki and the true mastermind behind these events, motivated by the moment his younger self realized the power of the TVA was stronger than the Infinity Stones.It is a good hypothesis as it keeps things squarely on Loki and the series examination of his nature. Indeed, Agent of Asgard pondered on this, too. The title character rebelled against his presumed role as villain while Old Loki reveled in it. But look a bit closer and you’ll see the movie is a decidedly Down Under production: Written and directed by Aussie Leigh Whannell, co-produced by Australian company Goalpoast Pictures, shot in and around Sydney, co-starring Aussie thesps like Harriet Dyer (that knife scene!), and crafted by a largely Aussie crew. It tops a list of five films that speak to the absolutely stellar year for Australian cinema (one that will continue with the release of the acclaimed The Dry, starring Eric Bana, this year). Pictures)If one wanted to find a common theme for Kevin Hart s movie career, he has twice now proven himself adept at finding a straight man to be his big screen partner, first with Ice Cube (Ride Along, Ride Along 2) and then Dwayne Johnson in the recent Jumanji movies. In a move that pretty much no one saw coming, it now looks like Kevin Hart s next movie partner might be Cate Blanchett. Inasmuch as that pairing might be against type, the whole movie might be playing into that theme, because what we re talking about is the video game adaptation Borderlands. Blanchett is attached to star as Lilith, The Siren, and Kevin Hart s character will be Roland, The Soldier. Roland and Lilith frequently partner together in the various Borderlands narratives, but they also have a few other crew members yet to be cast. Borderlands will be directed by Eli Roth, who is best known for his work in horror like Cabin Fever and Hostel, but he s also branched into other genres like he did with the kids movie The House with a Clock in its Walls (also starring Blanchett). Borderlands, its prequel, and sequels have earned over billion in game sales.Other Top Headlines1. DARREN ARONOFSKY TO SET JARED LETO ADRIFT(Photo by Derek Storm/Everett Collection)It doesn t happen that often, but every once in a while, we will hear about a new movie project with a certain title even though there was just another movie with the exact same title not that long ago. Shailene Woodley s survival drama Adrift (Fresh at 69%) just came out three years ago, but yes, we re already getting another Adrift. Jared Leto is now attached to star in a thriller called Adrift which will reunite him with Darren Aronofsky, his director on the addiction thriller Requiem for a Dream ( Certified Fresh at 79%). Adrift is described as being a thriller about a ghost ship based on a short story by Koji Suzuki, who also wrote the inspiration for Ringu (The Ring) (Fresh at 97%). It s important to note, however, that this will not be Aronofsky s next film, as that s already confirmed to be the recently announced overeating drama The Whale, starring Brendan Fraser.2. MICHELLE WILLIAMS TO REUNITE WITH KELLY REICHARDT FOR FOURTH FILM TOGETHER(Photo by Jim Spellman/Getty Images)If there is just one director that is most closely connected to the film career of actress Michelle Williams, it s probably Kelly Reichardt, who has previously cast Williams in Wendy Lucy (Certified Fresh at 85%), Meek s Cutoff (Certified Fresh at 86%), and Certain Women (Certified Fresh at 92%). Williams and Reichardt are now reuniting for an A24 movie called Showing Up, which is a bit of a departure for Reichardt, as it s described as a comedy (Reichardt s movies not super funny.) Williams will reportedly star as an artist on the verge of a career-changing exhibition who has to navigate friends, family and colleagues in the lead-up to her show. Reichardt s most recent film was last year s First Cow (Certified Fresh at 96%), which was a festival darling and has earned a handful of honors so far this awards season.3. TIMOTHÉE CHALAMET JOINS LUCA GUADAGNINO S HORROR ROMANCE BONES ALL(Photo by Jason Smith/Everett Collection)We ve known almost since Call Me By Your Name came out that director Luca Guadignino is developing a sequel, but recent news concerning Armie Hammer suggests why that movie might be put on hold for a bit. Instead, Guadagnino and his other Call Me By Your Name star, Timothée Chalamet, are now considering reuniting for a completely different movie project. Chalamet is now in talks to star in Guadagnino s horror romance Bones All, which has been speculated to involve cannibalism.4. PROMISING YOUNG WOMAN STAR CAREY MULLIGAN SCRATCHES FINGERNAILS Ryan FujitaniAlthough COVID-19 has obviously impacted this year s awards season harshly, it is still technically happening, and one of the top contenders this year is the indie thriller Promising Young Woman (Certified Fresh at 91%), starring Carey Mulligan. While she waits to see how things pan out for her this season, Mulligan has signed to star in a project called Fingernails, which will be the English language debut of Greek filmmaker Christos Nikou (Apples). Another major actress involved with Fingernails is Cate Blanchett, who is serving as one of the film s producers. Christos Nikou is reportedly still working on the Fingernails screenplay, which will reportedly be about a woman who starts to wonder if her relationship with her longtime partner is real, leading her to work at a mysterious institute designed to incite and test the presence of romantic love in increasingly desperate couples. That premise sounds a bit like The Lobster, which was also directed by a Greek filmmaker, Yorgos Lanthimos.5. DRACULA SPINOFF LAST VOYAGE OF THE DEMETER FINALLY SETS SAIL (Photo by ©Columbia Pictures)One of the odd quirks movie development is that some films take years and years to get produced, and along the way, some just never happen at all. One project that has taken its time is the horror film Last Voyage of the Demeter, which is based on one small part of Bram Stoker s original vampire novel Dracula and which has been in development at least as far back as 2010. In Dracula, the Demeter was the Russian ship that actually transported Dracula and his coffin from Transylvania to England. Last Voyage of the Demeter looks like it s finally happening, though, with Corey Hawkins now set to star for director Andre Øvredal (Trollhunter, The Autopsy of Jane Doe, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark). Bram Stoker s novel leaves the exact circumstances of what happened on the Demeter a mystery, except that when the boat finally landed in England, it was empty. Last Voyage of the Demeter is being produced by Steven Spielberg s Amblin Partners, but Spielberg himself is not credited as one of its producers.6. THE CROWN STAR CLAIRE FOY GOES FISHING FOR LOVE IN THE PISCES (Photo by Laurie Sparham/©Bleecker Street Media) Surprise wins have become a common theme at recent Academy Awards ceremonies (we re thinking here of Spotlight, Moonlight, and Parasite), but there is an argument to be made that no recent Best Picture winner was quite as unexpected as Guillermo del Toro s merman romance The Shape of Water, especially given its monster movie character design and roots in GDT s love for Creature from the Black Lagoon. Mermaids have a long history of appearing in movies, and Disney itself is currently producing their own live-action remake of The Little Mermaid, but this week, we also learned of a movie that seems more inspired by The Shape of Water. Claire Foy, who may be best known as the first actress to star as Queen Elizabeth II on hit Netflix series The Crown, is now set to star in The Pisces, an adaptation of the Melissa Broder novel about a PhD student who falls in love with a merman. The Pisces will be directed by Gillian Robespierre, who is currently best known for her acclaimed collaborations with Jenny Slate (Obvious Child, Landline), which may offer some insight into the tone of the film.7. ETHAN HAWKE ANSWERS THE BLACK PHONE FOR SCOTT DERRICKSON(Photo by Lev Radin/Everett Collection)Movie stars reuniting with directors was clearly a theme this week. Adding to the list is Ethan Hawke, who has joined the cast of a film called The Black Phone, starring Jeremy Davies (TV s LOST and Justified) and directed by Scott Derrickson (Marvel s Doctor Strange), the latter of whom previously worked with Hawke on his directorial debut, the 2012 horror film Sinister. The Black Phone will also be Hawke s ninth project with producer Jason Blum (of Blumhouse), following movies like The Purge (and, briefly, its TV spinoff) and the upcoming Showtime series The Good Lord Bird. Ethan Hawke will also soon be seen in the Vikings drama The Northman and the Disney+ series Moon Knight, starring Oscar Isaac.8. Now, Amazon Prime is planning to bring that unique perspective to television, and with some help from people who made the games. And while we don t much about the show yet, what we have learned makes us excited to wander the wasteland again.The world of the Fallout games is one in which the art-deco style of the 1950s persisted, even as we developed robots and nuclear-powered cars. But so did the atomic bombs, as the world learns first hand when a nuclear war decimates the planet in 2077. Good thing people in the 50s were also big on bomb shelters, which is how some people managed to survive in underground shelters called Vaults.In most of the games, it s been 200 or so years since the bombs dropped. What remains of the world is a wasteland full of mutants, giant insects, zombie-like ghouls, and other irradiated wildlife. But there are also some regular people, including a widespread military organization called The Brotherhood of Steel whose members wear suits of armor similar to what Tony Stark built in the first Iron Man movie.(Photo by Bethesda Game Studios)As for a more specific plot the Fallout show may follow, well, that depends on which of the recent games they base the show on assuming they even follow the plot of the game series and don t just create an original story in the same fictional universe, but in a previously unplayable location.If they do follow the games, though, they have a couple of interesting options. In 2008 s Fallout 3, a 19-year-old kid (created by the player) who grew up in a Vault near Washington, D.C. leaves to explore the world of 2277 in an attempt to find their father, who had escaped the Vault as well.Then there s 2015 s Fallout 4, which is set in the remnants of Boston and its suburbs. In that game, a survivor from 2077, who had been in suspended animation for 200 years, is trying to find the baby that was stolen from them while they were asleep.Amazon could also opt to base the show on the most recent installment, 2018 s Fallout 76. Set in 2102, just twenty-five years after the war, that game follows someone who grew up in Vault 76 when it opens twenty-five years after the war, and the former residents head out to forge a new life for themselves in the remains of West Virginia.Granted, there are other scenarios and locations they could explore in the show. There s the Southern California setting of the original 1997 game, or the remains of Las Vegas from 2010 s Fallout: New Vegas. But given that those games were not made by Bethesda Game Studios — who made Fallout 3, 4, and 76, and who are overseeing the show — we re guessing the odds aren t good.Who are the creatives involved?(Photo by Elizabeth Goodenough/Everett Collection)For the Fallout TV show, Amazon has employed the team of Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan, who you may know from their work on HBO s Westworld. The two will be writing and executive producing the series through their company, Kilter Films the same roles they have on Westworld. Joining them is fellow executive producer Athena Wickham, who is also an executive producer on Westworld, and a fellow Kilter employee.As for names familiar to fans of the games, the Fallout series will also be executive produced by Todd Howard, who was the game director on Fallout 3 and Fallout 4, and the executive producer on Fallout 76 and the mobile spin-off Fallout Shelter, as well as James Altman, who is the director of director of publishing operations for Bethesda Softworks, the company that publishes the Fallout games.In a joint statement by Joy and Nolan issued when they announced the show, they said, Fallout is one of the greatest game series of all time. Each chapter of this insanely imaginative story has cost us countless hours we could have spent with family and friends. So we re incredibly excited to partner with Todd Howard and the rest of the brilliant lunatics at Bethesda to bring this massive, subversive, and darkly funny universe to life with Amazon Studios. For instance, the aforementioned father that you re trying to find in Fallout 3 was voiced by Liam Neeson  yes, he of the Taken movies who has guested on such TV shows as Family Guy and The Orville. Other notable voice cast members from that game include Malcolm McDowell, who was the voice of President John Henry Eden and whose TV credits include Franklin Bash and the upcoming Truth Seekers, and Odette Annable, who was the voice of Amata Almodovar, and who s done runs on House and Supergirl.As for the other games, Fallout 76 s cast included Adrienne Barbeau, who s been on such shows as Carnivale and Maude, while Claudia Christian of Babylon 5 and 9-1-1 has voiced multiple characters in Fallout 4 and 76.Then there s Wonder Woman herself, Lynda Carter, who has done voices in Fallout 4 as well as such other Bethesda games as Rage 2 and multiple installments of their Elder Scrolls series (and, we should note, is also married to Robert A. Altman, the Chairman and CEO of Bethesda s parent company, ZeniMax Media).They could even tap the voice cast of Fallout: New Vegas, which is part of the series and published by Bethesda Softworks, but was not made by Todd Howard and the good people at Bethesda Game Studios. Not only did that game feature the vocal talents of Friends star (and Fallout superfan) Mathew Perry, but it also featured such TV stars as Chuck s Zachary Levi (A.K.A. DC s Shazam!), Dave Foley from NewsRadio and The Kids in the Hall, Michael Dorn of Star Trek fame, Battlestar Galactica s Michael Hogan, Danny Trejo, Kris Kristofferson, and, of course, Wayne Newton.But the real question for fans of the games is whether or not they ll get Ron Perlman, who s been the narrator in nearly every Fallout game going back to the 1997 original, to welcome people to the series, or maybe even every episode, with his iconic opening line, War War never changes. To mark its 10-year anniversary, cult classic Scott Pilgrim vs. the World is getting a special theatrical re-release on April 30. And it returns to theaters looking – and sounding – better than ever: The film has been re-imagined in Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, and will play in select locations for a single week. (And yes, we know it s been 11 years, technically, since it hit theaters – but the pandemic scuttled plans for an anniversary re-release last year.)To celebrate the return of Scott, Ramona, the Evil Exes, Knives, and Sex Bob-omb, director Edgar Wright sat down with Rotten Tomatoes for an exclusive and extended deep dive on how he and his creative team brought Bryan Lee O Malley s beloved comic strip to life. Why was Cera the perfect Scott ? How did he convince Beck to help out with the music? And whose teeth were they on the floor, lost in all those coins?Wright reveals all in the extended interview above – and check out highlights from the oral history below.(Photo by Kerry Hayes/©Universal/courtesy Everett Collection)“They cornered me and they said, ‘It s like John Hughes meets Kill Bill.’ I said, Well, I like that idea.’” Scott Pilgrim came into my life after a screening of Shaun of the Dead. It must ve been, I guess, in the summer of 2004, and the producers Adam Siegel and Jared LeBoff, who were producers on Scott Pilgrim, cornered me, and they had a copy of the first book, which was the only one out at the time, Scott Pilgrim s Precious Little Life: Volume 1, and they cornered me and they said, ‘This is your next movie.’ I was like, ‘Okay!’ They said, ‘It s like John Hughes meets Kill Bill.’ I said, Well, I like that idea.’ So they gave me the comic, and, they were half right, because I did make it into a movie, but it wasn t my next movie – I made Hot Fuzz next – but I really responded to the material.I loved the metaphor of the book. Bryan Lee O’Malley had written this book about how dating life and relationships and having to be mature in relationships was like a battleground; charting this journey to being with the woman who you think you re in love with is like a tournament in a martial arts film. I thought that was really interesting, the idea of fighting for a relationship, dealing with the baggage of a new partner, all of those things that you deal with in real life, but to do it in a really fantastical way. (Photo by Double Negative/©Universal/courtesy Everett Collection)“If we’d have cast super-fit Zac Efron, it s not quite the same movie.” Michael was the only person that I thought of for Scott Pilgrim. Anybody that was more – and this sounds like a sort of criticism of Michael, but it s not – but anybody who was more obviously studly and macho, didn t seem to me like the right thing for Scott Pilgrim. If we’d have cast super-fit Zac Efron, it s not quite the same movie, because it would seem like Zac Efron could handle himself in a fight, because he s like ridiculously ripped, whereas it was more funny and more relatable watching somebody like Michael A) be like a Romeo, and B) be like this amazing fighter. That to me was inherently funny. “She came in and auditioned against some more established people and just wiped the floor with them.” Brie Larson had been like a sort of child actor and even a teen pop star, but I remember she came in and auditioned against some more established people than her, and just like wiped the floor with them. Her audition, if you ve ever seen it on the Blu-ray, was just like extraordinary – and she was like 19. I remember I was in the room when she auditioned, and I was with Jared LeBoff, and we looked at each other and it was like, ‘We gotta cast her. Like, she was just amazing. (Photo by Double Negative/©Universal/courtesy Everett Collection)“They used to call me ‘the blink Nazi’ on set.” I wanted it to feel surreal, a bit like anime, and in animation, people don t really blink so much. There s [also] a thing, like Michael Caine, his school of acting, page one is, ‘Don t blink on a close-up,’ it s like classic Michael Caine technique: ‘Never blink on a close-up, it disempowers you, and it makes you look weak.’ And it s true, if somebody doesn t know their lines, they re blinking like crazy, so I sort of thought it was a good thing [to ask for no blinking]. If you look at Brie Larson s performance, particularly, she s so strong and so unblinking, so we got into this thing not blinking during takes, and they used to call me the blink Nazi’ on set. (Photo by Double Negative/©Universal/courtesy Everett Collection) I thought maybe Beck wouldn t wanna do it, because he s Beck and it s too small for him. Nigel [Godrich, the movie’s composer] was the one who said, ‘You should just ask Beck – Beck would love doing this; he would love reconnecting with his low-fi slacker roots.’ And so, it was Nigel who suggested Beck [write the music for Sex Bob-omb], and I thought maybe Beck wouldn t wanna do it, because maybe he s Beck and it s too small for him. But he loved it. Over one weekend, he basically did this demo of, like, 27 songs or something crazy.We d put artwork all around his studio, in his house, and he did it with like an 8-track, and it was just him and one other musician, Brian LeBarton. I remember on Sunday night Nigel texted me and said, ‘Hey, we ve got something,’ and then we went round, he had the CD, and then we drove around Los Angeles in the car listening to Sex Bob-omb, and basically that s the only real work that Beck did on the movie. Because here’s the thing: the demos that he d done were exactly the right sound, and Nigel said, ‘Why would you finish them anymore than this?’ – because this is what Sex Bob-omb could do. Sex Bob-omb wouldn t sound super polished, why don t we just use these? (Photo by Double Negative/©Universal/courtesy Everett Collection)“If you’re gonna make a musical, or a martial arts film, no two fights should be the same.” One of the things I really liked about martial art films from the 70s and 80s – the work of Jackie Chan particularly, and also early John Woo films – is that they had this kinda structure that was like an MGM musical. If you watch a Jackie Chan film from the late 70s through the 80s, you can see that there are elements where they ve got the structure of like a Gene Kelly musical. So if you’re gonna make a musical, or a martial arts film, no two fights [or musical numbers] should be the same, the number of combatants in a fight should be different every time. There should be some new novelty every time, or some new setting, or something that makes it interesting. So we sort of had to think of it in those terms: the second fight, with Lucas Lee, isn t really a fight with Lucas Lee, it s Scott Pilgrim fighting his henchman, you know, like in a video game; the third fight is a face-off; or the fourth fight is not really between Scott and the ex, it s mostly between Roxie and Ramona, and then Scott gets brought into it. Just imagine doing a gym session with Michael Cera and Jason Schwartzman. There s amazing stunt work by doubles in the movie, but also everybody that s in the fight scenes – Mary, Michael, Mae, Jason, Ellen – really worked so hard on those sequences. Probably my fondest memory of the entire shoot was actually before we started filming, the stunt training we did every morning with the stunt team – just working out with the whole cast was really funny. Just imagine doing a gym session with Michael Cera and Jason Schwartzman, and Chris Evans, and Brandon Routh, and Mary Elizabeth Winstead. Michael Cera was incredibly safety conscious, as you should be if you re doing fight scenes, but like maybe above and beyond. If he was doing a scene with a sword, he would have a short version of the sword, and he would be swishing around with the short version, and then for the effects part we would get a stunt double and bring in the long version, and be swishing that around.Michael was doing this take where he s fighting the henchman in the club, and Michael is saying like, ‘Am I I m not too close, everybody okay?’ and they re like, ‘Yeah, you can t hurt us, go as close as you dare, it s gonna be fine, don t worry.’ So Michael s doing his thing, being very conscientious. He then goes off to get a coffee, we do the take with the long sword, and then in the first take – bam! – one of the stuntmen gets hit in the teeth with the long sword and it knocks the teeth out. Then the teeth are on the floor, but also on the floor are thousands of coins. One of my most surreal memories of the shoot, is like myself and the entire stunt team looking on this nightclub floor for two front teeth in the middle of a bunch of coins. It’s not so much it s something that you feel new about [when you watch it again], it s more like: ‘Wait, I don t understand how we made that movie!’ Scott Pilgrim vs. the World is screening exclusively in Dolby Cinema at AMC Theatres starting Friday, April 30, 2021.
