From carriage rides and boat rides on the lake to archery and handwritten letters to communicate, they will be immersed in a time-traveling quest for love. In the end, our heroine and her suitors will discover if the ultimate romantic experience will find them true love.” Wannabe contestants, er, “heroines and suitors,” can apply to be on the series in this lengthy document.Showtime Networks has extended a deal with Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Partners that will mean additional Amblin films will air across Showtime channels and streaming service. Origin: Mexican FolkloreMemorable Adaptations: Mama, The Curse of La LloronaAt some point in every mythology, there s a tale of female, particularly maternal, vengeance think Dionysus or Medea (the Greek myth, not the Tyler Perry version). Even the original Friday the 13th can be traced back to a mother scorned. In The Curse of La Llorona, a mother drowns her children in a jealous rage to seek revenge on her cheating husband. Reckoning with what she did, she commits suicide, only to be denied entry to the afterlife, cursed to roam the earth weeping, drowning children, and tormenting mothers for all her days. It s a true word-of-mouth legend, unable to be traced back to any known story or event, and director Michael Chaves told us, It can be difficult to manage the nuances of it being an oral tradition. It s hard to pin down what is the right version. So you [go] through all of it to find [the] core experience that so many people grew up on, [what was] told to them as kids. That s what we wanted to bring on screen.

tures to Columbia Pictures, which was, by then, a component of Sony Pictures Entertainment. Marvel, still limping out of bankruptcy, was more than happy to sell the film rights to the studio when they briefly held them again in 1999.This led to Sam Raimi’s 2002 Spider-Man, its sequels, and the short-lived Amazing Spider-Man film cycle in 2012. By the early 2010s, Marvel Studios’ success with a cinematic universe was noted by Sony, and the company plotted its own similar endeavor with The Amazing Spider-Man 2, setting up their ambitious plan… at least until that film proved to be a creative and financial misstep.Sony, Marvel Studios, and Disney soon made a deal to introduce Spider-Man into the MCU. According to reports, Disney received a small percentage of the gross profits for Spider-Man: Homecoming and Spider-Man: Far From Home. And, from the view of Marvel fans, things were as exciting as swinging from a Manhattan skyscraper. But as corporations never prove to be easy bedfellows, a crisis was brewing.A Duel of Corporate Titans(Photo by Jay Maidment / © Columbia Pictures / © Marvel)According to Tuesday’s reports, Disney was seeking a co-financing deal with Sony for two additional Spider-Man films. Co-financing means a bigger piece of those precious profits in this case, to the tune of a 50/50 split. Sony was not interested in changing the arrangement, instead looking to maintain the profit sharing established with Homecoming. Initial reports suggested both companies dismissed these offers immediately without any hope of resolving the issue. This should not be a surprise, as both studios are quite secure in their positions. Avengers: Endgame is the biggest movie ever, while the successes of Venom and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse leaves Sony in a better position than when they made the Homecoming deal.Since fans love Spider-Man in the MCU, it s easy to dismiss Sony s objection as hubris, but we also imagine some Disney-haters are waving the Sony banner right now.By late afternoon on Tuesday, there were signs the companies may sit down and continue negotiations, but if no agreement can be reached, it looks like Spider-Man will once again be off in his own world while the MCU goes on without him.Oh, and you’ll probably have to explain all of this to your relatives when they ask you why Spider-Man isn’t an Avenger anymore.Marvel Without Spider-Man(Photo by Marvel Studios)As we keep track of Marvel Studios’ calendar fairly regularly here at Rotten Tomatoes, we noticed something interesting in its Phase 4 calendar of films and Disney+ limited series: the complete lack of Spider-Man. Since Phase 4 only covers the next two years of Marvel Studios releases, this didn t seem too strange during the Marvel panel at Comic-Con. Now, Spidey’s absence screams across that screenshot of the release calendar. It seems they knew this was a possibility. So what can Marvel Studios do if they really lose Spider-Man?Well, a fairly obvious way to go is to just ignore it for the time being, since the Phase 4 films have nothing to do with him. The first one, Black Widow, is reportedly set before he made his MCU debut in Captain America: Civil War; two more are meant to establish new characters – The Eternals and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings; and the two sequels, Thor: Love and Thunder and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, will presumably take place far from the Manhattan where Peter was outed as Spider-Man and blamed for the chaos in Far From Home.As it happens, that outing by J. Jonah Jameson (J.K. Simmons) may provide all the explanation Marvel Studios needs to remove Spider-Man from the story: he’s in deep cover until he can clear his name.(Photo by Jay-Maidment / © Columbia Pictures)Of course, it s not a truly tidy solution, as Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) was counting on Spider-Man to be part of whatever army he’s building in space a plot point that reflects Feige’s own love for the character. All the talk in Far From Home of Spidey being “the next Iron Man” means something even if the character can t really be the next Tony Stark. The implication throughout the film was clear: come Phase 5 or Phase 6, he would be holding the metaphorical Infinity Gauntlet, if not leading a new group of young Avengers himself. He was on a course to be the central MCU hero, and right now, that status is threatened by the dispute.Perhaps that role will fall on Shang-Chi’s shoulders, should Spider-Man be snapped back by Sony. And looking at the production calendar now, it almost seems as though Marvel Studios embedded a contest of champions just in case they lose the Webhead. Could Shang-Chi (Simu Liu), Sersi of the Eternals, or Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) easily take Peter s place? Then there s the worst case scenario: the MCU moves on without ever mentioning Spider-Man again. No explanation is offered because they do not have the rights to give one. In that case, there would be a permanent sense of loss that the films could never acknowledge.Spider-Man Without Marvel(Photo by © Columbia Pictures/courtesy Everett Collection)Sony, meanwhile, always had a plan. It s right there in the name of its Academy Award-winning animated feature, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. As mentioned above, the studio has been hot to build a cinematic universe of its own since the successes of Marvel s Avengers and its own The Amazing Spider-Man. At the time, the plan was to produce films centered on each member of the Sinister Six, the ensemble of Peter’s biggest foes whose formation was teased in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. That plan got shoved to the backburner when Amazing 2 killed all the goodwill audiences had for the cinematic Spider-Man and Sony agreed to lend Peter Parker out to Marvel.Sony soldiered on with a Venom film – which turned out to be a surprise success – and Into the Spider-Verse, a true creative triumph that earned Oscar gold. But even before the one-two punch of Venom and Spider-Verse, Sony was already in development with films based on Spider-Man characters like Black Cat, Silver Sable, and Morbius the Living Vampire. The latter s feature debut, Morbius, is slated for release on July 31, 2020. Black Cat and Silver Sable s journeys to the big screen, however, are taking a lot longer than planned. As it happens, they were supposed to share the spotlight in a film called Black and Silver, but that disintegrated as Venom neared release, and the two will now appear in separate projects.(Photo by Chuck Zlotnick/ © Columbia Pictures)Should a deal never be struck between the two studios, Sony has a clearer path than Marvel does, in some respects. Director John Watts and star Tom Holland technically work for them, not Marvel. The scene-by-scene creative merits of Homecoming and Far From Home remain in place, even if a third film cannot reference what happened to Peter in any of his MCU adventures. We assume any mention of Tony Stark, the Snap, and the Blip will be struck from the record. It may prove to be a bigger stumbling block than the studio thinks, though. So much of the story that set Holland s Peter Parker apart from the two previous incarnations is baked with MCU ingredients. Tony took the place of Uncle Ben as a father figure and motivating force in Homecoming, and his ghost haunts Far From Home. Peter’s connections to Stark Industries, the budding relationship between Marisa Tomei s Aunt May and Jon Favreau s Happy Hogan, the five-year gap, and Mysterio’s (Jake Gyllenhaal) motivation in Far from Home all turn to dust if Holland’s Spider-Man should find himself marooned in Sony s Spider-Verse. It still leaves the character outed, but without any underlying reasons why it matters. The silver lining for Spider-Man fans is that Sony will, of course, continue to make Spider-Man movies. They will also likely build up MCU-style crossovers until it feels confident about making that Sinister Six movie.Without An Agreement, Fans Lose(Photo by Chuck Zlotnick/ © Columbia Pictures)Should the companies fail to reach an agreement, fans will, in principle, lose the third Spider-Man film promised by Far From Home’s mid-credit scene. They will also lose whatever Feige and Marvel had planned for the character in upcoming phases, but that third film – which we jokingly called Spider-Man: Homeless at one point – will be a materially different film so much so that we cannot imagine the franchise would continue to use home as a key word in the subtitle.Marvel will still have its MCU and Sony will have its Spider-Verse, but this jockeying for profits will result in a Spider-Man film starring Holland with all of the MCU texture scrubbed clean. Despite his great talent in the role, Holland s journey as Peter Parker will be missing key aspects of his backstory, which new writers will have to work around. Also, Watts clever use of the MCU as a setting will also be lost; in its place will be the much shallower world of Venom. At least, for the moment, this is still a mid-credit cliffhanger and not a funeral by a lake. Sure, the outlook isn’t so good, but things seemed grim for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 at one point, too. Because of its success, Marvel Studios gets almost everything it wants admittedly, that s a questionable prospect in its own right and it may yet prove persuasive enough to make its parent company and Sony shake hands. Even in the span of one afternoon, the story has changed from “Spider-Man is leaving the MCU” to “anything is possible.” And, as in their films, Marvel Studios always banks on the hope of what is possible.Like this? This Week s special Comic-Con Ketchup brings you a recap of some of the reveals and announcements from this weekend s Comic-Con@Home 2021, including new and returning shows like Blade Runner: Black Lotus, Star Trek: Prodigy, The Walking Dead final season, and The Wheel of Time.FRIDAY 10 A.M. A CLOSER LOOK AT ANIMATED STAR TREKS: PRODIGY AND LOWER DECKSWith both Marvel and DC passing on Comic-Con@Home this year, one immediately obvious question was whether other film studios would step up to fill their vacancy, or if the event would be dominated by television. That question was quickly answered just by looking at Friday morning s TV and streaming–heavy schedule, and the event kept the same momentum the whole way through.Paramount+ got things started Friday morning with its Peak Animation panel focused on four shows, half of which from their Star Trek franchise. Kate Mulgrew will reprise her Captain Janeway character from Star Trek: Voyager in Star Trek: Prodigy, which was one of the four trailers. The comedy series Star Trek: Lower Decks, which received its season 1 reveal at last year s event showed off its season 2 trailer this year including the return of Jonathan Frakes as William Riker.Stephen Colbert Presents Tooning Out the News was also teased with its satirical special coverage  of this year s Comic-Con@Home itself. The final new show revealed and which had a trailer debut was The Harper House, featuring cast members like Rhea Seahorn (Better Call Saul), Jason Lee (My Name Is Earl), and Tatiana Maslany (Orphan Black), star of the 2022 Marvel-Disney+ series She-Hulk.FRIDAY 11 A.M. This week s Ketchup brings you another 10 headlines from the world of film development news (the stories about what movies Hollywood is working on for you next), covering such titles as The Batman, Clue, Jurassic World 3, and the next Spider-Man.This WEEK S TOP STORYDISNEY AND SONY MAKE NICE FOR ANOTHER SPIDER-MAN MOVIE IN 2021(Photo by Chuck Zlotnick/ © Columbia Pictures)You may remember that last month, there was a huge story that talks between Sony Pictures and Walt Disney Pictures (and their Marvel Studios) had fallen apart over future Spider-Man movies starring Tom Holland within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Reportedly, Disney and Marvel wanted a 50% cut of future Spider-Man movies , and Sony wasn t willing to budge. People understandably reacted quite passionately to the news, with plenty of folks saying one or the other studio was being greedy at the expense of what the fans wanted. Well, after all of that attention and feedback, the relevant parties started up talks again, resulting in today s big news, which is that Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios will indeed work together on a third solo Spider-Man film starring Tom Holland, which will be released on July 16, 2021. The financial compromise calls for Disney to receive 25% of the film s profits (leaving 75% for Sony), down from their original request of 50%. As part of the new deal, Tom Holland will also appear as Spider-Man in one more MCU movie, the title and premise of which haven t been revealed yet. The new release date (7/16/2021) for the next Spider-Man movie is the same as Space Jam 2, a week after Indiana Jones 5 (7/9/2021), and a week before Mission: Impossible 7 (7/23/2021). Marvel Studios other films scheduled for 2021 are: Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2/12/2021), Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (5/7/2021), and Thor: Love and Thunder (11/5/2021).Other Top Headlines1. MARVEL STUDIOS BOSS KEVIN FEIGE IS DEVELOPING A STAR WARS MOVIE (Photo by Greg Doherty/Getty Images)Before the news about Spider-Man broke, this writer thought for sure that the top story of the week was going to be this revelation about the future of Star Wars. In addition to the Star Wars movies that have actually been released since Disney acquired Lucasfilm, there are nearly as many projects that have been rumored or are still in development for the future, past 2020. We re thinking, for example, of the now apparently cancelled Star Wars Story movies for Boba Fett, Obi-Wan, and Yoda, and the projects from both director Rian Johnson and Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss.  As far as we currently know, the first movie from Benioff and Weiss is still scheduled for December 16, 2022 (with two more to follow in 2024 and 2026). It was announced this week, however, that what appears to be another Star Wars project is being developed by Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige. No other details have been revealed, except that there is reportedly a major actor that Feige hopes to attract. Considering it was reported earlier this year that Feige had been talking to Keanu Reeves about joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Reeves is now everyone s top guess as to who Feige is courting. Other names included in this piece by The Hollywood Reporter include previous Marvel stars Hugh Jackman and Michael B. Jordan, current Captain Marvel star Brie Larson, former Dark Knight star Christian Bale, and Leonardo DiCaprio, who has mostly avoided starring in franchise movies.2. JONAH HILL LIKELY JOINING THE BATMAN AS THE RIDDLER(Photo by Glen Wilson/©Sony Pictures Releasing)Few modern actors have transformed themselves within the last 15 years or so quite like Jonah Hill has. Based on some of the speculation this week, it would seem a lot of people haven t actually seen what he looks like since 2010 or so. It all started with the news that Hill had begun early talks with Warner Bros. about joining The Batman (the one starring Robert Pattinson) as one of the superhero reboot s villains. That led many to conjecture about him playing the Penguin, but Collider quickly confirmed that the role Jonah Hill is up for is the Riddler instead. The Penguin is still thought to be in The Batman, but another actor will take on that role. The Jonah Hill news ended up overshadowing the report a few hours earlier that Jeffrey Wright (of HBO s Westworld and the Hunger Games franchise) is also in talks to join The Batman as Gotham City Police Commissioner James Gordon, taking over the role previously played by Gary Oldman and, briefly, J.K. Simmons. Warner Bros has scheduled The Batman for release on June 25, 2021 (a week before Sing 2, and two weeks before Indiana Jones 5).3. ORIGINAL JURASSIC PARK STARS TO RETURN FOR JURASSIC WORLD 3 (Photo by Universal courtesy Everett Collection)In the past, we ve seen some of the stars from the original Jurassic Park return for sequels, with Sam Neill and Laura Dern returning for Jurassic Park III, and Jeff Goldblum having a small role in last year s Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. What hasn t happened yet, however, is all three of them returning for the same movie, and in more than just small roles or cameos. That is, until this week, as Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum, and Sam Neill are all now set to reunite for Jurassic World 3 (6/11/2021). Jurassic World director Colin Trevorrow, who skipped Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, will return to the franchise with Jurassic World 3 after also recently releasing a Jurassic World short film called Battle at Big Rock. No official premise for Jurassic World 3 has been announced yet, but the most common speculation involves the world s response to the various dinosaurs expanding their dominance over the Earth after escaping into the wild at the end of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. Jurassic World 3 is scheduled for release on June 11, 2021, which puts it a week after the Micronauts and Sesame Street movies on June 4, 2021.4. THIS WEEK IN RYAN REYNOLDS, PART I: JASON BATEMAN TO DIRECT CLUE REMAKE (Photo by Matt Winkelmeyer/Getty Images)Sometimes a given star or director will have more than one big story in the same week. That s what happened this week for Ryan Reynolds, who we last saw on the big screen in Pokémon Detective Pikachu (Fresh at 68%), back in May. Let s start with a movie we already knew about, namely the reboot of Clue, based on the popular board game. Clue came out in 1985, and though it currently has a Rotten Tomatometer score of 59%, its legacy suggests fans feel otherwise. Jason Bateman is now in early talks with Fox and Disney to direct and star in the Clue reboot, along with Ryan Reynolds, who is also producing and expected to star. Bateman and Reynolds previously costarred together in 2011 s The Change-Up (Rotten at 25%).5. THIS WEEK IN RYAN REYNOLDS, PART II: A CHRISTMAS CAROL WITH WILL FERRELLL(Photo by Hilary Bronwyn Gale / © Focus Features)Not only did we get news about two movies starring Ryan Reynolds this week, but they re both basically remakes/reboots. Unlike Clue, however, the other reboot is something that has been adapted dozens of times in film and television. Reynolds is teaming up with Will Ferrell to star in a new musical adaptation of Charles Dickens A Christmas Carol. So far, none of the stories about this new project specify which roles Reynolds and Ferrell will be playing, although this writer is going to speculate that Ferrell might be playing Ebenezer Scrooge, and Reynolds might be playing his unlucky and much put-upon employee, Bob Cratchit. (The roles could be going the other way, as well.) Musical adaptations of A Christmas Carol in the past have included the 1970 film Scrooge starring Albert Finney and 1992 s The Muppet Christmas Carol, among others.6. SYLVESTER STALLONE S SUPERHERO MOVIE SAMARITAN SCHEDULED FOR 2020 (Photo by Barry Wetcher/MGM)Now that Sylvester Stallone has starred in what is reportedly the last film in his most popular 1980s action movie franchise, Rambo: Last Blood (Rotten at 26%), it appears he now wants to jump on the superhero bandwagon in earnest. After a brief appearance in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Stallone will now reportedly star in Samaritan, which we first heard about in February. In a time when some movies take decades to get produced (like Will Smith s Gemini Man), Stallone s Samaritan is moving at breakneck speed, as MGM has already scheduled Samaritan for release on November 20, 2020. The director will be Julius Avery, who is coming off last year s World War II zombie movie, Overlord (Certified Fresh at 81%). Other movies coming out in November of 2020 will include Clifford the Big Red Dog (11/13/2020), Disney s Raya and the Last Dragon (11/25/2020), and King Richard (11/25/2020), in which Will Smith will star as the father of future tennis stars Serena and Venus Williams.7. SONY PICTURES CONTINUES SPIDER-VERSE PLANS WITH MADAME WEB Although Marvel Studios retains the film rights to most of their characters, Sony Pictures retains the feature film rights to over 900 Marvel characters who are directly connected to Spider-Man. That number might seem outrageously high, but one has to remember exactly how many Spider-Man comics there have been since the early 1960s, especially since, for decades now, there have been multiple Spider-Man comics running concurrently. That being so, not all of the Spider-Man supporting characters and villains are necessarily well-known, even to most comic book fans. Case in point: Madame Web is one of those lesser-known characters, but that is indeed the latest title that Sony Pictures is now developing with the writers of next year s Spider-Man spinoff vampire movie Morbius (7/31/2020). What remains unclear is which Madame Web this movie will actually be about, as that name has been used by two very different characters in the comics: the elderly blind psychic Cassandra Webb and the much younger superhero (formerly known as Spider-Woman II), Julia Carpenter.8. HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON DIRECTOR SAYS, LET S GET SMALL WITH MICRONAUTS (Photo by Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection)The argument can be made that one of the casualties of the immense popularity of the Star Wars action figures in the late 1970s and early 1980s was the Micronauts toy line, which had just started to take off in 1977 and 1978. The Micronauts toys were relatively innovative in that they allowed for mix-and-match play (you could attach the wheels of one Micronaut to the body of another). However, what Micronauts is best known for today is for inspiring a long-running Marvel Comics series in which the tiny heroes from the Microverse ended up coming to our larger Earth. Paramount Pictures, the studio which has in the past given us movies based on other Hasbro toy lines like Transformers and G.I. Joe, has scheduled Micronauts for release on June 4, 2021, but until this week, we didn t know who might direct it. That job is going to Dean DeBlois, who has spent much of the last decade writing and directing the various movies in the animated How to Train Your Dragon franchise. Micronauts remains scheduled for June 4, 2021, which is the same week as the Sesame Street musical film starring Anne Hathaway, and the week before Jurassic World 3.9. REMAKE FRENZY CONTINUES TO REVISIT THE 1990S WITH NEW JACK CITY (Photo by Warner Bros. courtesy Everett Collection)Hollywood has been hooked on revisiting its past for decades now, with most reboots and remakes usually centered about 20 or 30 years in the past at any given point. We re just now starting to see the focus move on from the 1980s to the 1990s, and the expectation is that the 1990s will continue to be revisited for most of the 2020s. The latest such remake to be announced will take audiences back to 1991 s New Jack City (Fresh at 77%), which was part of a wave of early 1990s urban crime dramas, featuring such future stars as Wesley Snipes, Ice-T, and Chris Rock. Warner Bros. has started development of the New Jack City remake by hiring actor and filmmaker Malcolm M. Mays (Snowfall) to start work on the screenplay. New Jack City was very much about the then-topical crack cocaine epidemic, but it s not yet known if the remake will remain in the early 1990s as a period film, or if the setting will be updated.Like this? You really feel her absence when she’s not on screen.” Oluwatayo Adewole, The Spool“She brings a smile to your face when she’s on screen…this movie doesn’t work without Dominique Fishback.” Sharronda Williams, Pay or Wait“She’s this movie’s most reliable power and the only thing you’ll remember about it five minutes later.” Justin Chang, Los Angeles Times“It’s a star-making performance.” Richard Roeper, Chicago Sun-Times“While I could do away with the ‘aspiring rapper’ trope writers always saddle on at-risk black protagonists, Fishback at least tries to make the character her own.” Travis Hopson, Punch Drunk Critics(Photo by SKIP BOLEN/NETFLIX © 2020)How Are the villains?“Don’t miss Rodrigo Santoro and Amy Landecker as some amusing bad guys.” Kate Erbland, IndieWire“Frank and Art aren’t fighting Thanos or Blofeld, but the drug itself and the havoc it wreaks: crime, bodily harm, crumbling neighborhoods.” Johnny Oleksinski, New York Post“Like The Old Guard before it, Project Power has a major villain problem, and the story upon which these more charming elements hang suffers as a result.” Clint Worthington, Consequence of Sound“The way they deal with the villains, though very fun and action packed, seems a bit too quick and easy.” Tessa Smith, Mama’s Geeky“There s a primary antagonist, sort of, who barks orders but is never explained…I’m sure this was done purposely to set up the sequel.” Julian Roman, MovieWebWill it leave us wanting more?“I would love to delve deeper into these characters and the origins of the pills, opening up the door for a possible sequel.” Allison Rose, FlickDirect“Perhaps the (inevitable) sequel can pack more juice.” Kate Erbland, IndieWire“This could be turned into a franchise but it also just works as a standalone. You get to the end and you feel entertained and fulfilled.” Julian Lytle, idobi.com(Photo by SKIP BOLEN/NETFLIX © 2020)So, it s worth a stream?“Netflix has indeed found a niche in adrenalized action flicks that’ll keep you entertained during lockdown while providing a little more nuance than you might expect, and Project Power fits right into that niche.” Steve Pond, The Wrap“Project Power is sleek and stylish enough to make it watchable. And these days, that’s almost enough?” Sean O’Connell, Cinema Blend“Since you’re sitting at home, scarfing entertainment on the small screen, there’s an impulse to say, ‘Check this out! It’s good enough!’” Owen Gleiberman, Variety“Project Power [is] an entertaining diversion.” Adam Graham, Detroit NewsProject Power is available on Netflix now.

We wrote about the latter just last month, as we explored animated movies that weren t necessarily intended to be horror pieces, but still managed to traumatize young viewers. But the former, the kids movies that are actually meant to be scary, are quite a special thing. The 80s and early 90s gave us plenty of darker movies for kids that managed to be creepy enough to scare the young audience – and frankly, many of the adults who were sitting with them – but still provided enough wonder and entertainment for those kids to return to the films again and again. Just to be terrorized once more.Among these darker films, there is one that stands above the rest: the Nicolas Roeg adaptation of Roald Dahl s The Witches. The story of an orphan and his grandmother who happen upon a convention of witches at a seaside hotel – and the beginnings of a scheme to rid the world of children – landed in U.S. theaters in August of 1990, and was immediately heralded as a groundbreaking entry in the canon of dark kids movies. With grotesque makeup courtesy of Jim Henson s team, a chillingly memorable Anjelica Huston as the Grand High Witch, and Dahl s ceaselessly dark story, it would become a VHS favorite for more adventurous children. (A remake, directed by Robert Zemeckis and starring Octavia Spencer and Anne Hathaway, is due in theaters in 2021.)To mark the 30th anniversary of the terrifying, hilarious, and unforgettable original, we re going to avoid eating the soup and explore why this is the scariest kids film ever made. Period.Forget Scream: This is the Opening 10 Minutes That Still Keeps Us Up At Night Plenty of horror movies, both for kids and adults, take their sweet time getting to the good stuff. Thankfully, The Witches wastes nary a minute, opening with evil witches, a terrifying short story, and establishing its lore as grandma Helga (Mai Zetterling) explains to Luke (Jasen Fisher) her hatred for the story s vicious child-killing witches and how to spot them. Right out of the gate, the film taps directly into the Stranger Danger panic of the 80s, as Helga says,  You can never be sure if it s a witch you are looking at or a kind lady. Then shit gets really creepy. As Helga explains how to spot a witch – no toes, purple tinge to their eyes – she tells the story of how her childhood friend Erica became a victim to the witch that lived next door. The way the film frames Erica s disappearing in a laneway, kidnapped by the friendly neighbor, is enough to send chills down both kids and adults spines. But then Helga reveals that a few weeks after the kidnapping, she noticed a strange little girl in the painting Erica s dad bought the day she went missing. Turns out, Erica is trapped within the painting, cursed to live her life in a 2-D space, growing old until one day she disappears. (Find us a 90s kid who doesn t remember the haunting image of Erica in that) painting. In just 10 minutes, the movie mixes the fantastical concept of witches with the real fear of child abduction, and shatters our view of a group that we re traditionally taught to see as safe — the nice old lady across the street who gives you candy and pinches your cheek. Then, to cap things off, Luke s parents die.The Director Is A Horror Genius And Doesn t Hold Back Despite his reputation as a children s author, Dahl writes plenty of disturbing imagery into his work. While many directors adapting his stories play down that aspect of the material — think Matilda, The BFG — the director of one of the best and most adult horror films ever made, Don t Look Now, was determined to bring the cruelty and ugliness that The Witches required.Having Nicolas Roeg direct a kids movie certainly was an odd choice, on the surface, given the director s reputation for thrillers with plenty of sex appeal. And yet, Roeg manages to perfectly translate the unpleasantness of the titular witches to the big screen, and create a sense of unease throughout. Watch as he uses extreme close-ups and Dutch angles to give the entire film an unsettling vibe. This is particularly effective when Huston s Grand High Witch pushes a baby carriage towards a cliff s edge and a chase to save it unfolds; the scene is already shocking by its nature, but Roeg treats it with the same seriousness as he did his nightmarish, lost-in-Venice scenes in Don t Look Now, turning it into an unspeakable act of unfathomable sadism.Roeg has admitted that he accidentally let his son watch the dailies, which helped him realize what scenes were too terrifying for the final film.Roald Dahl Knew How to Exploit Kids  Worst FearsOf course, the film wouldn t have been possible without the bizarreness and horror of Dahl s original story. Though we mostly remember him for his classic works of children s fiction like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, James and the Giant Peach, and Matilda, Dahl was not a stranger to horror. The author even hosted a pre-Twilight Zone sci-fi and horror anthology series called Way Out for CBS, and he always knew how to be scary without crossing a line, but also without ever talking down to his audience. In The Witches, Dahl explores that period in which kids start to realize the world may not be as safe or as bright as their parents made them believe. First, he does it by turning the nice old lady into a vicious monster, allowing Roeg to force us to look with suspicion at every character who enters the frame and sow distrust with every purple glint in a hotel worker s eye. Then, Dahl pulls a reverse Willy Wonka, using the chocolate bar as a poisonous weapon that threatens to turn every kid in England into a mouse. In Dahl s world, as faithfully rendered by Roeg – until the tacked-on happy ending at least – nothing is safe.Jim Henson s Grotesque Witch Makeup Caused Us All Kinds Of Nightmares(Photo by © Warner Bros. Pictures./Everett Collection)If there is one defining image of The Witches, it s the unmasking of Huston s Grand High Witch as she delivers her keynote address at the convention. After the stylish woman in that lush purple-lined cape walks onto the stage to the applause of her adoring fellow witches, she removes her wig to reveal a bald head — which we already knew to expect thanks to Helga s warnings. But then she goes a step further, removing her face mask to reveal a gnarly monster that seems part Skeksis, part Freddy Krueger. It s incredible work by Jim Henson s Creature Shop, and a far cry from either Kermit or even most of the creatures they conjured up for Labyrinth. The Grand High Witch is a masterpiece of horror makeup, and Henson s team dive fully into the ugliness and gnarly-ness of the look, which reportedly took several hours to put on and then even more hours to remove. There is more incredible work, too, as children and witches are transformed into mice, but it s Huston s transformation that sticks in the memory. The moment the witch removes her face is the moment the film affirms what it has so far only hinted at: behind the gentle smiles hide heinous monsters ready to devour you.Anjelica Huston Delivers One of the Great Horror Movie PerformancesIt s one thing to have a villain who looks the part, but The Witches only remains as memorable as it does because its villain also acts the part. Even before her nightmare-inducing transformation, Huston is an enthralling menace, vamping it up – what even is that accent – as she sashays flirtatiously one minute, and stares down and terrorizes the next. The Oscar-winner sells a completely different attitude than any other witch in the film. Instead of warm, gentle, and easy to approach, Huston s Grand High Witch exudes sex appeal, talks with a cold and detached voice that shows she knows she s more powerful than everyone in the room – she s Miranda Priestly, with certain unsavory appetites – and then writhes with pleasure when she s about to demonstrate her child-killing abilities. The film is constantly warning us against strangers, especially those who approach us with faked kindness, but Huston s Grand High Witch doesn t need to fake anything.  She is a repugnant and vile monster, and yet we – and seemingly every man who encounters her in the film – are drawn to her, almost admiring her for daring to be herself: a true witch, mask on or off.The Witches was released in U.S. theaters on August 24, 1990. It is available to stream on Netflix, and to rent or buy on FandangoNOW, Vudu, Amazon Prime, and iTunes.
Historically speaking, September has not been fertile ground for big moneymakers or awards season favorites at the movies. But with the COVID-19 pandemic continuing to throw everything out of whack, and with the film industry continuing to shift into more fluid release strategies, that may be changing. This month, we ve still got some big movies with big names behind them, ranging from superheroics to psychological terror to pure fantasy. Based on numbers compiled from our Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter polls, here are the five most anticipated movies of September!1. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021)#1 on Facebook and Instagram, #2 on TwitterIn theaters on September 3As is typically the case for these lists, the most anticipated movie of the month should come as no surprise to anyone. Simu Liu s Shang-Chi is the first Asian superhero in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to get his own film, so there is considerable excitement for his debut. The film also picks up on loose threads from both Iron Man and Iron Man 3 and boasts another noteworthy cast that includes Michelle Yeoh, Awkwafina, and the ahem legendary Tony Leung, which only makes it more of a must-see. Shang-Chi was only bested by one other movie in our social media polls, but more on that a bit later.2. Malignant (2021)#2 on Facebook and Instagram, #3 on TwitterIn theaters and on HBO Max on September 10James Wan was courted by some big franchises the Fast and Furious and DCEU, to be precise to step away from horror a couple of times in the past few years, and the last time he brought us an original creation was the very first Conjuring movie back in 2013. Now he s back with some new tricks up his sleeve in Malignant, which stars Annabelle Wallis as a woman who suffers from recurring nightmares about violent murders, only to discover her dreams are actually happening in real life. This one sat right behind Shang-Chi in all of our social polls, only slipping to third on Twitter because of the next movie on this list 3. Cinderella (2021)#1 on Twitter, #3 on InstagramOn Amazon Prime on September 3It would appear the Camilla Cabello fans came out in force on Twitter, as the singer s feature debut rocketed to the top of that poll. She plays the titular princess in a reimagined, jukebox musical version of Cinderella, starring alongside Billy Porter, Idina Menzel, Pierce Brosnan, Minnie Driver, and more. The new film takes a few small liberties with the classic tale Ella is an aspiring dressmaker, Porter plays her Fab G and fans are sure to find the creative interpretations of familiar songs delightful. Originally scheduled for a theatrical release, this one will stream exclusively on Amazon Prime.4. Dear Evan Hansen (2021)#4 on Facebook and Twitter, #5 on InstagramIn theaters on September 24Speaking of musicals, the fourth spot on this list belongs to a film based on a multiple Tony-winning Broadway hit with the stage production s star reprising his role. Ben Platt stars as the titular high school student, who finds himself wrapped up in an ever-expanding web of lies when a classmate commits suicide and his family believes Evan was his only friend. Based on the original musical s success, it s not surprising to see the film s roster of A-listers, which includes Julianne Moore, Amy Adams, Kaitlyn Dever, and Amandla Stenberg, among others, and fans looking forward to the adaptation helped propel it into the top five.5. The Card Counter (2020)#3 on Facebook, #5 on TwitterIn theaters on September 10Lastly, we have a somber, thoughtful drama from writer-director Paul Schrader, whose last film, First Reformed, was such a stunner that everyone was clamoring to see what he d do next. Oscar Isaac stars as a card-playing ex-con who runs into young man (Tye Sheridan) with a dark connection to his past life in the military and attempts to set him on a path to redemption. The film just had its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival, and reviews thus far have been glowing, making it a solid choice to round out the top five of the month.Thumbnail by Marvel StudiosOn an Apple device? 亚博网站是什么 (Photo by ©AV Pictures/Courtesy Everett Collection)The Best Australian Horror MoviesYou might expect a list of Australian horror films to be teeming with the beasties people associate with the continent: poisonous snakes, deadly spiders, mammoth crocs. Yet while this collection of essential Aussie horror flicks does contain several of those Down Under biters – two crocodile movies, one shark movie, and one about a giant wild boar (didn t see that coming, did ya?!) – it also features works that tap into something just as threatening: the vast land itself, from the mystery of its desert center to the dark possibilities of its cities sprawling suburbs. Movies like Wolf Creek and Road Games play with our anxiety about who, and what, we might encounter dare we venture into the endless Outback, while Hounds of Love and The Babadook explore what might lie behind your neighbor s door.Recent international breakouts like Jennifer Kent s Babadook and Natalie Erika James atmospheric haunted house chiller Relic traffic in the slow-building dread of today s elevated horror, but Australian genre films have been largely marked by a certain hard brutality over the years. Consider Wolf Creek and its sequel, or the more recent Killing Ground, which tell ripped-from-the-headlines slasher tales of terrorized backpackers and campers, but do so with an almost merciless insistence on graphic, real-feeling violence. And while we re talking brutal, check out The Loved Ones, a darkly comic tale of obsession that found new ways to drill into the torture porn trend of the 2000s.To be included in the list, movies had to be made and set in Australia, by a predominantly Australian crew. They also had to have more than 10 reviews – which is why the great maybe-horror Bad Boy Bubby, with only nine Tomatometer-approved reviews, didn t make the cut; ditto the excellent anthology Dark Place. We then culled the selection down to the 20 highest-rated movies, which included a couple of Rotten-but-fun (Bait) or seminal flicks (Patrick), and even a Jamie Lee Curtis sort-of-slasher. (Yes, Curtis s Final Girl phase even took her to entirely different hemispheres.) Purists may quibble with the choice to include Phillip Noyce s Dead Calm, a twisty and taut three-hander with Sam Neill, Nicole Kidman, and Billy Zane – it s not horror in the traditional sense, perhaps, but it will have you squirming. As will Justin Kurzel s The Snowtown Murders (released as just Snowtown in Australia), a crime drama with grisly horror elements you won t soon forget. Take shots at us in the comments if you must, but won t regret watching them. With all that said, here are the 20 highest-rated Australian horror films, according to the Tomatometer.Best Spanish-Language Horror Movies | Best Korean Horror Movies | Best Italian Horror Movies | Best French Horror Movies | Best Japanese Horror Movies2020’s Best Horror Movies | 200 Best Horror Movies Ever
