亚博最新版本采用百度引擎7(Baidu 9)(Photo by Rooster Teeth; Mammoth Screen and MASTERPIECE; Dana Starbard/AMC)Updated March 20, 2020There’s so much great stuff to watch, we know. But as cord-cutting becomes more common and networks like NBC, HBO, and CBS decide to stop playing nice with the likes of Netflix, Amazon, and Hulu and launch their own streaming/subscription video on demand (SVOD) platforms or other over-the-top services (OTT), the question is becoming less about what to watch and instead about where to find it.Some choices are obvious, brought to you by established major media brands and are already very much a part of pop culture vernacular:CBS All Access has been churning out new Star Trek series, including Discovery and, the latest, Picard, in addition to series like The Good Wife spin-off, The Good Fight.Sony Crackle is where to find new shows like crime drama The Oath and classics from its library like The Facts of Life and movies like Adaptation and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Facebook Watch has been around a few years and has become known for drama series like the anthology Sacred Lies.Disney+ launched in November and gave the world the gift of Baby Yoda through The Mandalorian, a TV series set in the Star Wars universe, in addition to other original content and classics from the Disney film archive.Apple TV+ also launched last year and has already made a name for itself with awards-worthy programming like The Morning Show (although we re partial to period dramedy Dickinson. And there’s more to come. Soon, we ll all have the answer to what is Quibi, the streaming platform that promises to give us quality (or at least enjoyable) content in 10-minutes-or-less morsels. Programs and channels owned by WarnerMedia — think cable channels like HBO and TNT as well as soon-to-launch shows and classic programming like Friends — will soon be housed under the streaming platform HBOMax. And NBCUniversal will soon launch its over-the-top streaming option, Peacock.(Rotten Tomatoes is owned by Fandango, a division of NBCUniversal that includes film and television on-demand streaming service FandangoNow.)There are also more all-encompassing options like Sling TV, PlayStation Vue, and Pluto TV (the latter of which has expertly curated channels, such as Adam Carolla’s one for car buffs called Chassy). And, in perhaps the ultimate example of clearing the clutter, the service VRV will bundle your select streaming video on demand and fandom content. (One of the service s options is NickSplat, a channel featuring Nickelodeon kids content from the 1990s, including CatDog, Rocko s Modern Life, and The Wild Thornberrys).“With SVOD, if you look at the failures, these are things that are pitched at mainstream, big-stream audience [like Seeso or Verizon’s go90], and they just couldn’t make that work, says Todd Spangler, Variety’s New York–based digital editor.  On the nichier side of things … I think those are genuine, niche genre categories that can support a smaller subscription base and be profitable. They’re not going to be Netflix, but —”What kinds of niche content options are we talking about, exactly? We’ve rounded up some examples of the diverse specialty streaming sites available. Not specific enough? You can always watch that one Roku channel that only airs episodes of the old game show What’s My Line? For TV Addicts Who Love an Accent: Acorn TVThe Acorn TV subscription-based streaming service is one whose “audience is sophisticated, demanding, and passionate about content,” according to General Manager Matthew Graham when he spoke at the winter 2018 Television Critics Association press tour. Its programming is from the United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and beyond. These include celebrated British murder mysteries like Manhunt (92% Tomatometer), and the soon-to-premiere Deadwater Fell (86% Tomatometer), which stars David Tennant and Cush Jumbo. For Unabashed Anglophiles: BritBoxThis SVOD service, which launched in 2017 as a partnership between BBC and ITV, is a speedy fix to anyone craving classic British programming. “What sets us apart from all the others is our ability to present many of these shows within hours of their U.K. premiere,” BritBox North America president Soumya Sriraman told journalists at the winter 2018 TCA press tour. Highlights include Absolutely Fabulous (96% Tomatometer)and Fawlty Towers (100% Tomatometer), as well as newer titles like the sitcom Mrs. Brown s Boys. For Anime-niacs: CrunchyrollLaunched in 2006, this streaming favorite is synonymous with anime and anime-related products like manga, TV dramas, and music. Still, given the plethora of options available from those markets, Crunchyroll Head of Business Operations Brady McCollum tells Rotten Tomatoes that it becomes a “mix of art and science” to find which programs best fit their TV options. While some titles on the site are expected hits — Dragon Ball Super, Attack on Titan, My Hero Academia — the fans have been known to surprise them (some examples include Darling in the Franxx and Megalobox). McCollum says the team also “see(s) a bright future in creating originals for our passionate community to come together through extraordinary content. One of Crunchyroll’s first original series will be High Guardian Spice, which is about four girls who learn about friendship and allegiances while studying sorcery and battles. For Bollywood Lovers: Eros NowOne of many over-the-top platforms to celebrate all things Bollywood films and other regional programming, Eros grew out of film production company Eros International and, according to its homepage, boasts 100 million registered users and 7.9 million paying subscribers.  It also has a lengthy list of television shows and original programs, including sudsy dramas like Kuch Na Kaho, a love story about a couple whose families try to tear them apart. For Those Who Prefer Their Heroes With Capes: DC UniverseDC Universe launched in 2018 and is home to favorites like the 1978 Superman movie and new programs like the animated, but certainly not rated-G, Harley Quinn. Subscriptions also give you access to over 20,000 comic books and information on special events and contests. For Gay-Cinema Devotees: DekkooThis Philadelphia-based streaming service is geared toward gay and bisexual men. It s become known for its trove of art house flicks of pretty much any genre that celebrate or highlight characters who happen to be gay. “When we do our original content, we steer toward episodic because it’s more interesting and it keeps customers attached to the site longer,” says Dekkoo COO Brian Sokel, adding that this also came from necessity as not a lot of TV feature diverse gay characters. “What we find from subscribers is they are looking for content that’s for a gay audience … but they want to be able to see content that’s not about a coming out story; it’s just gay characters in larger stories.” Original series include the dating competition series Love Is Blind (which isn t to be confused with the Netflix series of the same name) and the 20-something comedy I’m Fine. For Korean TV Junkies: KOCOWALaunching as a partnership between South Korea’s three major networks, the Los Angeles–based KOCOWA offers a way for those outside of that country to catch its most popular programming just a few hours after they first air. KunHee Park, the CEO of parent company Korea Content Platform has said that the majority of its users are young, female, and not Asian (In fact, the channel launched in Brazil last year, meaning it now also has Portuguese subtitle options). Popular programming include variety shows like Running Man and dramas like Wok of Love. KOCOWA also has licensing deals with similar services, like the Asian TV powerhouse Viki. For Kevin Hart Disciples: Laugh Out LoudComedian Kevin Hart and studio Lionsgate launched this OTT streaming service in 2017 as a way to showcase content that the comedian endorses and curates. (This is kind of Hart s thing; he also is known for Comedy Central s Kevin Hart Presents: The Next Level, which spotlights up-and-coming talent.) Among the programs on LOL are Cold as Balls, where Hart himself takes ice baths next to the hottest names in sports. There are also comedy specials from D.L. Hughley, Iliza Shlesinger, and more. For Your Baby-Daddy s Online Catfisher/Stripper-Girlfriend: Nosey(Photo by Nosey)Nosey may not be the place to find the most high-brow and intellectually stimulating programming, but have we got a service for those who like to watch hour after hour of men sweating it out over paternity tests. This free app, which is available on the likes of Roku and Google Play, is a carefully curated list of programming like Maury Povich, Jerry Springer — so pretty much every program that would make your family seem like one in Andy Griffith. For Players Who Know When to Hold ’Em, Know When to Fold ’Em: PokerGoAn OTT service that’s willing to bet big on the niche factor? Sam Simmons, VP of content for Poker Central, which oversees PokerGo, says the goal of his service is to “combine the existing television success of longstanding programs like the World Series of Poker with world-exclusive original programming, in order to create a year-round entertainment destination for the game that excites both the most passionate fans and casual enthusiasts.” This means they offer over 100 days of live poker coverage as well as original series like Hand Histories, a new series that looks at real-life gamblers and their stories. For Drama (and Comedy!) Queens: RevryAlia J. Daniels and Chris Rodriguez, two of Revry’s founders, tell Rotten Tomatoes that the goal of their LGBTQ-themed streaming service is to be as inclusive as possible. This isn’t just in regards to gender and sexuality; Revry also strives to highlight racial and ethnic diversity. “I think a driving force behind our programming is reflecting the community as we are as opposed to what’s trendy or what big-wig ex

But it also proved their faith in series creator Jon Favreau and the contributions of Star Wars Rebels creator Dave Filoni was rewarded. And as both reiterated throughout the presentation, they are both giant fans of Star Wars.“I was born in 1975, so I’m a product of this,” added star Pedro Pascal, who recalled meeting with Favreau and Filoni before he was cast. Describing a room filled with storyboards and illustrations of the proposed series, he said his immediate reaction was “What do you want me to do? Play that bug or that robot?” only to be overwhelmed when they said they wanted him to play the Mandalorian. Pascal mimed fainting to describe the sensation of being offered the lead role. But that was just one of the surprises unveiled during the presentation, complete with a Mandalorian sizzle reel exclusive for those inside the Celebration Stage in Chicago. Luckily, we were there and can offer you some of the things we learned about the show.1. Pascal Is the Mandalorian With No Name(Photo by Lucasfilm)Filoni and Favreau are fans of Star Wars, but they’re also found of the series antecedents in Western movies and samurai films. Maintaining a tradition from those genres, Pascal’s Mandalorian has no name. It is unclear if his identity will be revealed later, but Filoni, Favreau, and Pascal referred to him only as “The Mandalorian.” He’s a mysterious, lone gunfighter in the outer reaches of the galaxy,” Pascal explained. “Some would say he has questionable moral character.”In one of the exclusive clips shown, the Mandalorian takes a meeting with Greef Carga (Carl Weathers), the leader of a bounty hunters guild in that section of space. During the meeting, the Mandalorian tries to take all of the bounties Carga has on offer, which the guild leader finds excessive. But it echoes back to the gunslingers from the Westerns Pascal said Favreau assigned him to watch as part of the preparation for the series.“He’s a badass,” Pascal added. “[Jon and Dave] have created an incredible, iconic character.”In an extended clip shown only at the Celebration Stage, fans heard the Mandalorian speak for the first time. In a detail which will thrill long-time fans, his cadence matches the one Boba Fett spoke with back in The Star Wars Holiday Special and the original versions of The Empire Strikes Back and The Return of the Jedi. Of course, that cadence is inspired from another iconic film persona. “He’s got a lot of Clint Eastwood in him,” Pascal said.2. Carl Weathers Plays a Bounty Hunter Guild Leader(Photo by Lucasfilm)For an added surprise, Favreau revealed Weathers’ involvement in the series and introduced him to the stage. After a spontaneous outpouring of love from the crowd — who started cheering for the Apollo Creed actor by that character’s name — Weather’s found himself overwhelmed.“Nothing comes close to this,” he said after the roar died down.Weather’s Greef Carga is “looking for someone to bring back a product for a client which is very valuable,” Weathers explained. “He finds the Mandalorian, and that guy gets done what needs to be done.”In the clip, Carga refers the Mandalorian to a “sensitive client” who demands face-to-face contact with the bounty hunter. Despite the tense situation, their interaction seemed friendly enough. Or at least as friendly as one can be when talking to a masked man with no name.3. Werner Herzog and Giancarlo Esposito Are Imperials(Photo by Lucasfilm)The client turns out to be the character played by Werner Herzog. The legendary director, who recently turned to acting in things like The Mandalorian, recently said he plays a “small part” as a villain, but in the clip, it turns out he represents a faction of the deposed Empire.“It was really compelling to me what happens after the celebration of the Empire falling,” Favreau explained before the clip. “The revolution was successful, but then what happens?”As it turns out, the answer is at least partially inspired from the Expanded Universe interpretation of the post-Empire era. Factions known as the Imperial Remnant continue to flex their might in sectors not as tied to the Rebellion or the emerging New Republic. In the clip, the Mandalorian finds Herzog’s character guarded by stormtroopers. The gleam may be off their white armor, but they still appear battle ready when another Imperial agent (played by Omid Abtahi) enters the room. Guns are drawn, but Herzog defused the situation. He also offers the Mandalorian a few details about his quarry; offering him a locator and the last four digits of the bounty’s gene marker. The preference is to bring the bounty in alive, but Herzog tells the Mandalorian he will accept proof of the mark’s death for a reduced fee. The other Imperial is not impressed by this change in their plan.In the subsequent sizzle reel, Herzog can be heard asking “are things better since the revolution?” Amid scenes of violence and fire (all narrated by Herzog stating his belief in the Empire),  Giancarlo Esposito’s character appears. While also unnamed, his uniform also identifies him as part of the Imperial Remnant. He orders a stormtrooper to ignite his flamethrower and flush out someone from a dwelling. A subsequent shot also reveals Esposito in a TIE fighter.4. The Show Will Feel Gritty(Photo by Lucasfilm) While Favreau and Filoni kept name-checking the campy Holiday Special as an inspiration — indeed, the Mandalorian s rifle is a direct lift from the Special s Boba Fett cartoon — Filoni mentioned the show will have a gritty feel to it. This came through in the sizzle reel, which included dusty village streets, old stations covered in snow, and plenty of run-down technology abandoned and weathering. The overall look evokes the original Star Wars — right down to one shot which may or may not be the original film’s Mos Eisley cantina — which was very much the thing Favreau said he wanted to accomplish with The Mandalorian. But he added that Filoni is making him more of a fan of the Prequel aesthetic as well.5. Gina Carrano Plays Ex-Rebel Shock Trooper Cara Doone(Photo by Lucasfilm)The sizzle reel also offered the first clear look at Gina Carano’s Cara Dune.“She’s an ex-Rebel shock trooper,” Carano explained. “[She’s] a bit of a loner — which is a stretch — and [she] is having a bit of trouble reintegrating into society.”In the preview, the Mandalorian spots her in a cantina, much to his displeasure. The two end up fighting in an alley and eventually draw blasters on one another. It is unclear if this is the beginning of a partnership or a rivalry, but her Mando-inspired shoulder guards suggest there may be some sort of bond.Well, provided the Mandalorian really is what he claims. In his scene, Herzog s character infers the person under than armor may not be a true Mandalorian.6. The Mandalorian’s Ship, the Razorcrest, Is a Practical Effect(Photo by Lucasfilm)Glimpsed briefly in the clip shown early in the presentation, Favreau offered a few details about the Mandalorian’s ship, the Razorcrest. Details he said “most people won’t even know, but we knew you’d appreciate it.”The twin-engine ship will be the title character’s key vehicle, but making it was a labor of love between Favreau, Filoni, and the group at ILM when the executive producer made one request: “Can we shoot a model?”Stymied in using old-school techniques on movies like Iron Man, he was thrilled when Lucasfilm let it happen and the ILM crew became obsessed with creating the ship as a miniature. Parts were kit-bashed from other model kits, just as they did back in the 1970s, while other elements used cutting edge techniques and 3D printing. Members of the ILM team manufactures long-retired motion-control camera rigs in their garages while higher-ups like John Knoll sat in on planning meetings to bring the Razor Crest to life. That dedication to detail was one of the key things Favreau wanted to pull off with The Mandalorian. On screen, it means little throwbacks to the film series. In the extended clip, a food vendor can be seen roasting Kowakian monkey-lizard — Salacious Crumb’s species — and in the sizzle reel, a droid who may or may not be legendary bounty hunter IG-88 gets in on the action as he swivels his torso to take on attackers in a 360-degree arc of fire. Additionally, plenty of familiar aliens are realized with creature effect make-up. There s even a gonk droid hanging out with the Imperials.“We used a lot of tech from Iron Man, The Jungle Book, and even The Lion King,” Favreau said. “But Star Wars, at its core, has to feel handmade. So there are animatronics and puppetry.”“All that passion trickled down,” Carano added. “Jon would well up with tears explaining how much a scene meant [to him], and you felt like you were part of something special. Everybody in every department would be there for 17-hour days. And you wanted to be there because it was worth it. It had this magic. I always want to work with is people passionate about what they’re doing.”That sense of passion was clear from the material Favreau brought to stage. With the film series taking a pause after Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, The Mandalorian will be the key live-action Star Wars product and it looks like it will be a worthy torchbearer. The Mandalorian will launch on Disney+ on November 12, 2019.

The Television Academy announced nominations in its 71st Emmy Awards on Tuesday. (See the full list here.) Among those nominations was crazy love for the final season of Game of Thrones — no matter what critics said about the series last episodes — but none for Homecoming, and massive Schitt s Creek enthusiasm, but little for Succession.Read on to find out who got snubbed and who was a surprise in this year s nominations. Have a snub or surprise you want to add yourself? Tell us in the comments!Surprise: Game of Thrones Supporting and Guest Actor Nominations(Photo by Helen Sloan/HBO)The Television Academy has rewarded Alfie Allen, Gwendoline Christie, and Carice van Houten for their dedicated work on HBO’s Game of Thrones; the former two scored supporting nominations, and the latter received a guest nomination. While the names of Kit Harington, Emilia Clarke, Lena Headey, Sophie Turner, Maisie Williams, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, and Peter Dinklage were all floating high on prediction lists, few expected the drama nominations sweep that the eight-season fantasy series pulled off on Tuesday. With its 32 nominations this year, the most for any program in a single season (beating NYPD Blue’s 25-year standing record), Game of Thrones now has the most Emmy nominations for a drama program in history with 161 and the most Emmys won with 47.Snub: Homecoming Snubbed in All Categories(Photo by Amazon Prime Video)One of the most acclaimed TV series of last year, and the winner of our own Golden Tomato Award for Best Drama, Homecoming was snubbed in a number of major categories Tuesday morning. Sam Esmail’s twisty, Hitchcockian Amazon series missed out on a slot for Outstanding Drama, as well as for Outstanding Lead Actress for Julia Roberts and Outstanding Lead Actor for the excellent Stephan James. Its loss in the Outstanding Drama Series category did make room for kinda-surprises like Pose and Bodyguard, which were not considered absolute locks going into nominations morning.Surprise: Comedy Rules (the Tomatometer)Debbie DayThe average Tomatometer for Best Comedy Series is 97.86% on the Tomatometer, while the average for Best Drama Series is 87.13%. Even if Game of Thrones eighth season 54% is removed, the drama category still only averages 91.29%. Both seasons of Fleabag, for one, are Certified Fresh at 100%, contributing to comedy s dominance.Snub: Richard Madden for Outstanding Lead Actor In A Drama Series for BodyguardDebbie DayWhile Netflix’s U.K. terrorist thriller Bodyguard may have scored an Outstanding Drama Series nomination, star Richard Madden – who had been considered a lock in the drama actor category – was left in the cold. It was one of the biggest snubs of the morning, considering the critical praise heaped on Madden for his dedicated, physically and emotionally demanding performance as war vet David Budd, not to mention his Golden Globe win for the role. Madden’s loss might have been Milo Ventimiglia’s gain, though; the This Is Us star was a semi-surprise, sneaking into the category.Surprise: When They See Us Women Dominate Limited Series Category(Photo by Atsushi Nishijima/Netflix)Pundits were predicting that Jharrel Jerome, who plays one of the five wrongly accused men, Korey Wise, in Ava DuVernay’s When They See Us, might nab a spot in the limited series lead actor category – and he did. The big surprise today was that Niecy Nash, who plays Wise’s mom Delores, and Anjanue Ellis, who plays Sharon Salaam, were both nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or TV Movie. The two women beat out big names like Emma Stone for Maniac and Julianna Margulies for The Hot Zone. A surprise to prognosticators, sure, but anyone who saw their work as desperate mothers fighting the system in the acclaimed Certified Fresh Netflix miniseries might have seen this kind of upset coming. Vera Farmiga also got a nod in the Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or Movie category, a nomination that some saw as a snub of Carmen Ejogo, who was considered a favorite for her role in True Detective.Snubs: Allison Janney for Mom and Pamela Adlon for Better Things for Comedy Lead Actress(Photo by Sonja Flemming/CBS)Seven-time Emmy winner Janney won in this category in 2016 and has been nominated in the role of Bonnie Plunkett five times, and Adlon has one win and seven nominations overall, two for her role as Sam Fox. Both were seen by experts as likely nominees, but those spots went instead to…Surprise: Christina Applegate for Dead to Me and Catherine O Hara for Schitt’s Creek(Photo by Netflix)Where there are snubs, there are also surprises. Applegate and O’Hara give Netflix and Pop, respectively, reason to cheer with their nominations in the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series.Surprise: Speaking of Schitt’s Creek…(Photo by Pop)Eugene Levy was a surprise nomination in the comedy actor category, taking a spot that experts anticipated would go to Jim Carrey for Kidding, and the title itself surprised in the comedy series category, beating out expected nominee The Kominsky Method, which won a Golden Globe earlier this year.Snub: Succession in the Acting Categories(Photo by Peter Kramer/HBO)The HBO title grabbed a best drama nomination — good luck against Game of Thrones! — but was shut out of the acting categories, despite favored performances from James Cromwell for guest actor, Kieran Culkin and Matthew Macfadyen for supporting actor, and Brian Cox for lead actor. Sarah Snook and Jeremy Strong were also in the conversation.Like this? Subscribe to our newsletter and get more features, news, and guides in your inbox every week.

(Photo by © 2020 Lucasfilm Ltd. ™. All Rights Reserved.)This week, The Mandalorian gave fans of the old Star Wars Expanded Universe the same sort of buzz it gave Ahsoka Tano fans last week: the thrill of recognition. From using video game ideas to restoring the cool of a fan-favorite character, the episode gave the Star Wars galaxy back a lot of the texture it accrued in the 1990s, but lost when Disney bought the brand. Also, actor Temeura Morrison, writer Jon Favreau, and director Robert Rodriguez reminded us why Star Wars’ original wearer of Mandalorian armor exuded so much swagger. Now that Boba Fett is once again part of the story, let s dig into The Tragedy and speculate on what these EU callback may mean for the galaxy. The following contains spoilers about The Mandalorian, season 2, episode 6, “Chapter 14: The Tragedy.” Stop here if you have not watched the episode.A Jedi Encounter Set Their Path(Photo by © 2020 Lucasfilm Ltd. ™. All Rights Reserved.)Acting on a tip from Bo-Katan Kryze (Katee Sackhoff), Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) traveled to Corvus, where he and his child ward met Ahsoka Tano (Rosario Dawson, pictured), a Force-user trained in the Jedi arts. Although she could not train the child — whose name, she informed the Mandalorian, is Grogu — she sent the pair to Tython, where the ruins of an ancient Jedi temple may allow Grogu to contact a Jedi capable of training him. With their business complete, Djarin and Grogu left Ahsoka to continue her search for Imperial Grand Admiral Thrawn.A Tragedy Occurs at the Jedi Temple(Photo by © 2020 Lucasfilm Ltd. ™. All Rights Reserved.)Arriving on Tython and reaching the temple ruins with remarkable haste, Djarin places Grogu on a central stone orb. At first, the child seems incapable of doing anything Jedi-like, but after the Mandalorian sees Slave I entering atmosphere, he notices Grogu has established contact with the temple and raised some sort of signal beam/ray shield. Unable to collect Grogu from it, he prepares for another fight.Descending into the nearby valley, he soon meets his apparent opponents: Boba Fett (Morrison) and Fennec Shand (Ming-Na Wen). Fennec reveals Fett saved her from death while Fett reveals well, not much about how he survived on the sands of Tatooine. The bounty hunter s greatest concern is the return of his armor and offers to protect Grogu in exchange. Djarin, still adhering to the Way of the Mandalore, believes Fett has lost his right to the armor as he has been unmasked. The point is academic, though, as Imperial Remnant troop carriers break atmosphere. Djarin, who took off his jetback during the exchange, runs back to the temple ruin to collect Grogu while Fennec and Fett get ready to fight the Imps.Despite their numbers, the Remnant stormtroopers are overwhelmed by Fennec s ease with a rifle and Fett s impressive skill with a Tusken gaffi stick. Djarin, meanwhile, finds he cannot push through the ray shield to get Grogru. Soon, he joins the fight while Fett sees an opportunity to collect his armor from the Razor Crest. And its a good thing he does as Djarin and Fennec are soon cornered by Imps, but Fett flies over head and uses nearly all of the tricks in his armor to inspire fear in the Imperial ranks. He also uses the rocket on his jetpack to destroy the troop carriers as they retreat.(Photo by © 2020 Lucasfilm Ltd. ™. All Rights Reserved.)Moff Gideon (Giancarlo Esposito), observing the scene from his light cruiser in the upper atmosphere, sends down a turbolaser bolt to destroy the Razor Crest and a squad of Dark Troopers to collect the child. The maneuver is successful and Gideon, finally, has possession of Grogu and his Midi-chlorian-rich blood.Fett proves he is the rightful owner of the armor and a man of his word. Since he failed to protect the child, he offers his services in retrieving Grogu from the Empire. Fennec does likewise and the trio make their way to Nevarro where New Republic Marshal Cara Dune (Gina Carano) tells Djarn where he can find former Imperial sharpshooter Mayfeld (Bill Burr); a key part of the Mandalorian s rescue plan. Also, because the child has been abducted, it appears she will aid Djarin in springing Mayfeld from prison.Ghosts of the Expanded Universe(Photo by BioWare)From Tython to Fett to the Dark Troopers, this week s episode proved just how deep into Star Wars lore Favreau and his collaborators are willing to delve for story and action.Tython is the starting planet for Jedi Knights and Jedi Consulars in the Star Wars: The Old Republic MMO. Set thousands of years before the events of Chapter 14, it is still an active hub of the Jedi Order and — at least in that game — the group s ancestral homeworld. This conflicts with the Sequel Trilogy, which states the ocean world of Ahch-To is the original home of the Jedi, but there s room for inconsistency when characters are talking about events in antiquity. Clearly, both worlds felt the presence of the Jedi early in the Order s history. Also, the Tython seen here is a much sparser world than the one in the game, suggesting Favreau reserves the right to alter EU concepts to better fit his story.Nevertheless, the callbacks continue with the look of the temple ruin, which more than resembles the Trayus Core on Malachor V; the sanctum Darth Traya escapes to in the latter parts of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II — The Sith Lords. In that Sith shrine, she is able to tell the player s character, a Jedi in exile named Meetra Surik, about the far future. She even alludes to Boba Fett in her prognostications.(Photo by 20th Century Fox/Lucasfilm)Fett himself, of course, was revived in the Expanded Universe. Despite his apparent death in Return of the Jedi, writer Tom Veitch and artist Cam Kennedy were quick to bring him back in Star Wars: Dark Empire. The comic book series would lead to plenty of post-Return adventures for the famous bounty hunter. But it is important to remember the EU was cursed with various levels of continuity and in the most important tier, the so-called G-Canon (for George Lucas), Fett was still being digested in the innards of the Sarlacc. It was important, therefore, for Favreau to declare on no uncertain terms that this is, indeed, Boba Fett standing before Din Djarin. In doing so, he restored a lot of the coolness the character lost over the years. Since his major scenes in the Original Trilogy see him failing against an partially trained Jedi and a mostly blind Han Solo, he began to look dopey when compared to Mandos like Kryze and Djarin. But now that we ve seen him be a capable fighter with nothing but a Gaffi stick, we re more than glad to see he survived the Pit of Carkoon.Maybe we ll even learn how he did it someday The Dark Troopers, meanwhile, bring elements of the first Star Wars first-person shooter into canon. Star Wars: Dark Forces was a revelation for fans upon its release in 1996 thanks to its Doom-like format and its nods to the larger Star Wars story. In it, mercenary (and future Jedi) Kyle Katarn stumbles into an Imperial plot to create a new battledroids and powered armor for an elite squad of troopers. Sadly, Dark Forces and its sequels — collectively known as the Jedi Knight series — were dumped from any sort of canonicity when Disney declared the EU a collection of legends. The ships Katarn used, the Moldy Crow and the Raven s Claw, remained part of the universe thanks to some tabletop games, but Kyle was lost. The presence of the Dark Troopers several years after the events of Dark Forces suggests Gideon s resources are far more vast than we ve been led to believe. They also make the Dark Trooper project an undisputed part of Star Wars history. All of which adds to the excitement of the episode, particularly for those whose interest in Star Wars was kept alive in the early-to-mid 1990s thanks to the first games and stories emerging from the EU.Expanded Questions(Photo by 20th Century Fox/Lucasfilm)Of course, all of these EU elements returning leads to a number of questions about Star Wars history, the shape of things in the New Republic era, and other characters Djarin could meet.Is Kyle Katarn Back in the Picture? The appearance of the Dark Troopers leaves us wondering how much of Dark Forces is canon. Is there room again for Kyle Katarn? Favreau willingness to use EU ideas suggests he may appear — even if his part in recovering the Death Star plans has been erased from history. If so, he may be a capable teacher for Grogu. Then again, Star Wars: Jedi Knight — Dark Forces II gave players the option to make Kyle switch to the Dark Side. If he is back, his nature could be dubious. How Strong Is the New Republic s Hold on the Galaxy? Considering the Remant s freedom to invade an Inner Core world like Tython, the New Republic s grasp on the galaxy sure feels tenuous. This is largely in line with stories set around the same time in the EU, but it might be something worth exploring on the show; of course, the ambiguous political situation makes The Mandalorian’s ties to Lone Wolf and Cub that much stronger; that series is set in a time when regional daimyos exerted more control over feudal Japan. Nevertheless, Gideon s apparent might will requires a Republic response at some point. How Organized Is the Imperial Remnant? Boba Fett s declaration that The Empire is back suggests Gideon may have marshaled more military strength than we previously believed. Is it just a matter of Gideon knowing where Sheev Palpatine kept all of the secret projects? Or, by way of attrition, has Gideon become the heir to the Empire. If that s the case, is Thrawn on his side or is there still room for conflict within the Imps?Who Did Grogu Contact? Since the child ended the signal beam of his own accord — or because he was fatigued — did he contact a Jedi? And if so, who? The list of possible teachers is pretty slim. There is Luke Skywalker, of course, Kyle Katarn (if he s back), Ezra Bridger (if he s been rescued), and, perhaps, Jedi Master Yaddle (pictured above). This last option is the most intriguing. While she was killed in an Expanded Universe story, her continued existence is possible in the current history. Retiring from the Jedi Council (and any sort of public life) a number of years before the Clone Wars, she may have survived the Jedi Purge. Also, she is from the same species as Grogu. From a narrative standpoint, she would seem the most worthy to train him, at least in Djarin s mind, and the most convincing reason for Grogu and Djarin to part ways. Although, considering the playful scene at the beginning of Chapter 14, we seriously doubt the pair will ever split up.Well, once Djarin and his new band of outsiders rescue Grogu from the Imperial Remnant.Where Is Mara Jade? One last EU thought: the fan-favorite character from the Star Wars EU novels could emerge from the shadows thanks to all of these nods to the old continuity. She could easily be retconned as a Sith Inquisitor and serve as a mighty ally (or foe) for our heroes.Like this? (Photo by Tracy Bennett/©Columbia Pictures)All Adam Sandler Movies RankedThe critics haven t always been kind to Adam Sandler over the course of his film career, but box office receipts don’t lie — his detractors have been handily outnumbered by his many ardent fans, many of whom have been laughing it up over the SNL vet’s shtick for decades. His filmography s certainly had its share of ups and downs, but it includes some of the biggest — and most eminently quotable — comedy hits in recent memory, from Billy Madison to Happy Gilmore, as well as a number of beloved rom-coms like The Wedding Singer and 50 First Dates, and indie gems in the form of The Meyerowitz Stories and Punch-Drunk Love. In fact, one of his latest was exactly that: 2019 s Uncut Gems, the intense crime thriller from the Safdie bros, drew some of the highest critical acclaim of Sandler s career.Watch out for hired goons, giant penguins, and, of course, Bob Barker, and let’s take a look at his entire filmography, from the best Adam Sandler movies to the worst, ranked by Tomatometer!
The Turning (2020) 13% Henry James classic novella The Turn of the Screw is one of the most famous examples of open-ended gothic horror, and it s been the subject of classroom debates ever since it was first published in 1898. So it s fitting that it has seen numerous screen adaptations, many of which offer different interpretations of what exactly the story communicates. The latest is this week s The Turning, brought to us courtesy of director Floria Sigismondi (The Runaways, Marvel s Daredevil, The Handmaid s Tale), who updates the story for a 1990s setting, and critics say it s unnecessary and unnecessarily frustrating. Mackenzie Davis stars as Kate, the new nanny to orphaned high-society siblings Miles (Finn Wolfhard) and Flora Fairchild (Brooklynn Prince), who live on a large, spooky estate in Maine in the care of their maid. Kate quickly discovers that neither the children nor the house is quite normal, and when mysterious things begin to happen, she finds herself ill-equipped to make sense of any of it. Unfortunately, the critics largely also failed to make much sense of the film, which fails to generate much dread from its repeated images of creepy doll faces and ghostly specters in the distance en route to a baffling climax. James original story is clearly meant to inspire discussion, but The Turning isn t likely to spark much other than bewilderment and maybe a little regret.

Ghcxuf the new direction that we were going in. Suits Goes South in Spin-off PearsonGina Torres’ lawyer character Jessica Pearson is used to being a boss on Suits. But in her spinoff, Pearson, which sees her move to Chicago (where she isn t licensed to practice law), she ll have to start over as a fish out of water.  Jessica has to earn her family, Torres said. These are completely different people. It s a completely different world. She doesn t know them. They don t know her. They don t know if they trust me.  Check out what Jessica will experience in the first trailer for the new series, which premieres later this year on USA.Abby’s: Where Everybody Knows Your NameNBC s new sitcom, about a woman who runs a bar in her backyard, will naturally draw comparisons to another famous bar-set sitcom. But star Neil Flynn noted that the setting is really the only thing Abby s has in common with Cheers. Star Natalie Morales, who plays the titular character, welcomes the comparison, though. Any kind of comparison that we could have, or to Ted Danson that I could have, I’m very happy, she said. The setting isn t exactly similar, however. Abby s bar is outside, which meant that the show filmed in front of a live studio audience outdoors in Los Angeles, presenting a few unique challenges. The things we had to worry about were airplanes and helicopters; sirens being noisy, Morales said. But a fun fact is we shot this on Tuesday nights, as opposed to many multi-cams [that] shoot on a Friday night, because we shot on the Universal Lot, and Halloween Horror Nights was going on, and you would have heard the screaming. So we avoided that, which was nice. Abby s premieres March 28 on NBC. 😈😈

亚博最新版本 (Photo by ©Marvel Studios)The numbers look good for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, which pulled in a record-breaking million across the four-day weekend. They look even better for theaters and the industry. The only people  probably looking at the numbers with some grief are the folks at Paramount, which recently pushed both Jackass Forever and Top Gun: Maverick off this year’s schedule into 2022. That could still turn out to be a good idea and ultimately be looked back upon as just a slight delay for some bigger grosses, assuming the pandemic numbers head in the right direction again. But as the box office numbers have been showing for the past month now, people are still going to the movies – especially when there are no streaming options. But even more important for the industry is the extrapolation of these numbers, which are starting to feel more like pre-2020 instead of 2021. And not to bury the lede, but the box office just had its biggest Labor Day weekend ever. Not bad.King of the Crop: Shang-Chi Breaks Multiple Records, But Can It Be the first 2021 Movie to Hit 0 Million?Only four other times in history has the four-day Labor Day holiday grossed over 0 million, led by the likes of Rob Zombie’s Halloween, Lee Daniels’ The Butler, Guardians of the Galaxy, and The Possession (two of those movies did not even debut in that weekend). The films in this Labor Day weekend s top 10 grossed over 1 million, besting the 4 million over the 2007 holiday which was led by Zombie s Halloween.Last week when we measured the success of Candyman, it was the Thursday-preview numbers that served as our guide. This week, we note that Shang-Chi had the second-best preview numbers during the pandemic, with .8 million. That is more than F9’s .1 million and less than Black Widow’s .2 million, which we should remember was made before the film hit Premier Access on Disney+ on Friday. Shang-Chi had no Premier Access on Friday, nor Saturday, Sunday, Monday, nor going forward. The seven past live-action PG-13 films which have grossed between .3 million and .3 million in Thursday previews include 2014’s Godzilla, Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, Transformers: Age of Extinction, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, and The Amazing Spider-Man 2. They averaged a three-day opening weekend of .5 million, with the second Fantastic Beasts film posting the weakest eventual three-day haul with .1 million. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings posted an estimate of .5 million over just the three days. That may be slightly below the average of those other films, which all had more recognizable name brands than Shang-Chi, but it is also the biggest Labor Day opening ever, the second-best opening of the pandemic, and the third-best September weekend ever behind both of the It films.(Photo by ©Marvel Studios)Those are also the only films to ever open in September and gross over 0 million. That is a number the box office has yet to crack since Bad Boys for Life did it before shutdown in 2020. Black Widow opened to million and could not do it – but it was also available for a price at home. F9 opened to million and came up shy of 5 million, despite being a theatrical exclusive. Only five films have ever grossed million or more in their first five days and failed to gross 0 million: Fifty Shades of Grey, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, The Simpsons Movie, and The Day After Tomorrow are four of them; the fifth is this summer’s Black Widow (i.e. pandemic + home availability = some will avoid the risk).Shang-Chi has very little competition over the next few weeks before Venom: Let There Be Carnage releases in its new just-announced date – Sony was clearly encouraged by this weekend s numbers – and No Time To Die comes out. Add Monday’s holiday to the total and Shang-Chi is estimated to have a gross around million over the four days, very much in line with the pre-pandemic average based on its Thursday numbers. What a difference a day makes! If we can begin to measure some metrics by films just being a day or so off their pre-2019 theatrical exclusive wavelengths, we may be making some progress. Especially if we can all just stay safe out there. The Top Ten And Beyond: Candyman Holds Strong As Free Guy Sets Sights on Passing Jungle Cruise(Photo by 20th Century Studios)Shang-Chi could not deliver the best Labor Day weekend ever all by itself. The continuing success of Free Guy can not be overlooked as it made another .9 million over the weekend and .4 million total over the holiday, bringing its total to .5 million in 25 days. That is over half a million more than what Jungle Cruise had in 26 days (.97 million). Cruise, which has been available on Disney+’s Premier Access, still has a strong presence in the top 5 in its sixth weekend of release and has driven its theatrical total to 6.7 million. Free Guy, without any streaming options until the end of the month, is now likely to surpass Jungle’s numbers and possibly get as high as 0 million. Free Guy’s three-day weekend also ranks 16th all-time amongst fourth weekends for August releases – higher than Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Straight Outta Compton, Rush Hour 3, and Lee Daniels The Butler. It has made 9 million worldwide to date. Jungle Cruise is at 9 million.Candyman contributed even more money to the pot this weekend, making .4 million for a 53% drop from last weekend – better than The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It’s 57% fall from a .1 million start and Old’s 59.3% fall from .8 million. With an increase to .3 million through the holiday, Candyman’s .7 million in 11 days is less than a million behind the pace of HBO Max’s The Suicide Squad, which made .6 million in 10 days. Remember that James Gunn’s day-and-date streaming film fell 71.5% down to .4 million in its second weekend. Candyman is now poised to surpass that film’s total and settle in with around million- million.Paw Patrol: The Movie, which Paramount sacrificed into theaters so Clifford the Big Red Dog could live on someday, grossed .1 million this weekend and an estimated .3 million over the holiday. No family film released in the second half of August has ever grossed million, let alone one streaming at the same time. Paw Patrol finds itself with .5 million after 17 days, which is better than The Angry Birds Movie 2 was doing in the same period in 2019 with a .94 million third weekend and .79 million. It went on to gross .66 million. Expect Paw Patrol to end up in that vicinity – lower than most family films gone hybrid this year, but potentially still higher than Sony’s Peter Rabbit 2, which was exclusive to theaters. On The Vine: James Wan s Original Horror Film, Malignant, a Venice Favorite, and MoreJames Wan’s Malignant may be the closest thing to challenge Shang-Chi’s number 1 slot (but that is still further away than Jim Carrey’s shot at Lauren Holly in Dumb and Dumber). The horror film will also be streaming on HBO Max starting Friday. In more exclusive news, STXFilms is putting the Kristen Bell and Kirby Howell-Baptiste crime comedy, Queenpins, into select Cinemark theaters, just their second during the pandemic after this February’s The Mauritanian. Then Focus will be releasing Paul Schrader’s The Card Counter, which debuted to great critical acclaim at the Venice Film Festival this past week. It currently stands at 97% on the Tomatometer.Full List of Box Office Results: September 3-6, 2021

I don t know what the ingredients should be. But I certainly think Nebraska is a credit to the industry of filmmaking and it s done very, very well. And both he [director Alexander Payne] and Quentin [Tarantino, with whom Dern has worked three times] can make a f king movie, trust me. Alexander said to me the first morning, Do you see anything here, you ve never seen before? I went looking around – we were in Nebraska in some little town in the middle of October, cold, freezing – and I said, Yes I do. I said, It seems like everybody here is putting their oar in before 8am. And he said, Well hopefully, that s because we have 91 crew members here and 78 have worked every day on every film I ve ever made. He put his hand on my shoulder and he said, So you, sir, can go take a risk. And he said, This is Phedon Papamichael; he s your cameraman. I met him the day before. And he said, I wonder if you d do something for Phedon and I, that we re not sure you ever did in your career. I said, Well what s that? And he said, Never show us anything. Let us find it. And I knew for the first time in my life I had a partner.Al Pacino came up to me I d never met him at a party and said, You know, I ve not seen your movie yet, Nebraska. But everybody back at the Actors Studio – cause we re both members – is talking about your performance. So Brad Grey is at the party, and he ran Paramount then, and I said, You know, Al Pacino has not got a screener, cause it was Christmas time. So he said, Tell him he ll have one tomorrow morning with his newspaper. At noon the next day my phone rings and I pick it up and he says, Bruce, Al Pacino. I said, Oh wow. He said nothing for about 10 seconds, and then he said, How did you do that? I told him what Alexander told me about “let us find it.” And he said, I have tears in my eyes, because you knew you had a partner. I ve never had a partner. He said, Bruce, I never ever saw the work. You were just the character. And that s the greatest compliment to me I ever had.

DANIEL CRAIG S CHARACTER WILL RETURN IN KNIVES OUT SEQUEL (Photo by Claire Folger/©Lionsgate)Daniel Craig s run as James Bond will end in a few months with the release of No Time to Die (4/10/2020). The relative success (0 million worldwide from a million budget) of the recent whodunit mystery Knives Out (Certified Fresh at 97%), however, is about to give Craig a new franchise to replace his old one. Writer-director Rian Johnson is reportedly already working on a Knives Out sequel that will feature Craig s detective Benoit Blanc investigating a new case, implying that most of the cast will also be new. Lionsgate has not yet given the Knives Out sequel a greenlight, but Rian Johnson is reportedly hoping to start filming within the next year, presumably for a release in late 2021 or 2022.2. NICHOLAS HOULT JOINS MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 7 AS THE FRANCHISE S NEXT VILLAIN (Photo by Elizabeth Goodenough/Everett Collection)Mission: Impossible Fallout (Certifed Fresh at 97%), the sixth film in the franchise, introduced a new adversary for Tom Cruise s Ethan Hunt in the form of a CIA assassin played by Henry Cavill, who in 2018 was coming off his run as Superman. For Mission: Impossible 7, Paramount Pictures is turning to another recently finished franchise for its next villain. Nicholas Hoult, who played Beast in recent X-Men movies, has signed on to join the Mission: Impossible franchise with the seventh film, which is currently scheduled for release on July 23, 2021 (one week after Space Jam 2 and Tom Holland s third solo Spider-Man movie). Other new cast members will include Hayley Atwell, Pom Klementieff (both of the Marvel Cinematic Universe) and, also announced this week, Shea Whigham (Boardwalk Empire). Director Christopher McQuarrie said of Shea Whigham s character, You ll never see him coming, which is leading some to speculate that he may be playing magician Rollin Hand, who was played by Martin Landau on the original 1960s TV series.3. RYAN REYNOLDS CONFIRMS DEADPOOL 3 IS IN THE WORKS AT MARVEL STUDIOS (Photo by Joe Lederer/TM & ©Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation)Although the 20th Century Fox version of the X-Men franchise ended last year with Dark Phoenix, there is one franchise that appears to be making the transition from Fox to Marvel Studios relatively smoothly. Talking this week to the hosts of TV s Live with Kelly and Ryan, Ryan Reynolds confirmed that Deadpool 3 is now in active development at Marvel Studios, with the whole team (preumably screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick) now working on it. It is not clear how Deadpool will transition from one cinematic reality (the world of Fox s X-Men movies) to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but Deadpool s ability to break the fourth wall may be all the explanation the screenwriters need. Deadpool (Certified Fresh at 85%) and Deadool 2 (Certified Fresh at 84%) came out just two years apart from each other (2016 and 2018), but with no release date for Deadpool 3 yet in 2021 or 2022, the gap between 2 and 3 will be presumably be much longer.4. TIMOTHÉE CHALAMET JOINS MUSICAL BIOPIC BANDWAGON AS BOB DYLAN (Photo by Jason Smith/Everett Collection)Following the 3 million earned in 2018 by Bohemian Rhapsody and the accolades this year given to Rocketman, Hollywood is certainly on the hunt for other musical biopics it can greenlight next. Jennifer Hudson is currently filming the Aretha Franklin biopic Respect (10/9/2020) and Baz Luhrmann is preparing to film an Elvis Presley biopic starring Austin Butler (Tex from Once Upon a Time in Hollywood) as Elvis and Tom Hanks as Colonel Tom Parker. We can now add Bob Dylan to the list, as Timothée Chalamet (Call Me By Your Name, Little Women) this week joined an untitled Bob Dylan project (formerly called Going Electric). Not to be confused with the 2007 Bob Dylan film I m Not There (which featured several people as Dylan), this new film will be directed by James Mangold, who previously directed the Johnny Cash biopic Walk the Line and most recently 2019 s Ford v. Ferrari, also based on a true story. As the working title Going Electric suggests, this new Bob Dylan film will focus on the period in his life when he switched from the acoustic guitar of a folk singer to the electric guitar of a rock star. Timothée Chalamet will next be seen in Wes Anderson s The French Dispatch and as Paul Atreides in the remake of Dune (12/18/2020).
