The film, which was originally dropped by Warner Independent after the studio doubted its commercial prospects, would go on to gross over 0 million worldwide, win Best Picture at the Academy Awards, and make international stars out of leads Patel and Freida Pinto. It would be hard to match that kind of explosive feature debut, and for the next several years, only the Best Exotic Marigold Hotel cinematic universe films would come close to that early critical and box office success. But Patel came roaring back with Lion, the true-story drama that would earn him a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nom, with the film itself ultimately in the running for Best Picture. The Certified Fresh Hotel Mumbai and Personal History of David Copperfield followed, and now Patel is getting career-best review write-ups for A24 s Arthurian jam, The Green Knight.Read on to see all Dev Patel movies, ranked by Tomatometer!

For Spanish-speaking fans, Cine-Mundial was a godsend. Founded in 1916 as an offshoot of the trade magazine Moving Picture World, the New York-based Cine-Mundial quickly established an identity of its own, and in doing so, “positioned Spanish-speaking readers as an integral rather than peripheral audience for films,” wrote Rielle Navitski in the book Cosmopolitan Film Cultures in Latin America, 1896-1960.Cine-Mundial began as an attempt to capitalize on the growing Spanish-speaking audience in the United States, Latin America, and Europe. Within a few years, the magazine shifted its focus from a trade paper to a fan magazine, with celebrity interviews, glossy photo spreads, witty columnists, and eye-popping front covers. In particular, Jose M. Recoder s striking pastel celebrity portraits graced the front of the magazine frequently in the 1930s and early 1940s.Cine-Mundial’s rise coincided with the Hollywood celebrity of Mexican stars like Dolores del Río, Ramón Novarro, and Lupe Vélez, and came at a moment when notable directors like Sergei Eisenstein (Que Viva Mexico!) and Fred Zinneman (Redes) shot films in Mexico. (In addition, some studios concurrently made English and Spanish versions of certain films, the best example being the well-regarded Spanish version of Dracula.) With correspondents in Mexico City, Havana, Buenos Aires, and Madrid, Cine-Mundial featured detailed chronicles of local filmmaking scenes and popular movie theaters. One of Cine-Mundial’s most venerable contributors was Elena de la Torre. Originally from Spain, she wrote a syndicated movie column in which she was an outspoken advocate for women both in front of and behind the camera. Eventually settling in Los Angeles with her husband Miguel de Zárraga (himself a contributor to Cine-Mundial), she was arguably the magazine’s most prominent critical voice. In addition to her work with Cine-Mindial, De la Torre also contracted with Fox to evaluate Spanish-language books for potential movie projects. While Moving Picture World ceased publication in 1927, Cine-Mundial held on for two more decades before closing its doors in 1948. By that point, homegrown film industries in Mexico and Argentina were peaking creatively and commercially, holding firm on their own turf against Hollywood fare. But over the course of its three decade run, Cine-Mundial demonstrated the strength and passion of the Spanish-speaking audience while documenting the rise of regional Latin-American cinema.(Photo by The Library of Congress via Internet Archive)Read Cine-Mundial on Some of the 20th Century s Most Seminal FilmsHere s what Cine-Mundial had to say about classic movies (the full reviews are in Spanish):The Wizard of Oz (1939): The Wizard of Oz will have people enchanted with its spell for a very long time.  – Elena de la Torre, November 1939

Sonic the Hedgehog had a lot of hurdles to overcome, from the fan backlash to its character design (and the subsequent production delay in response) to the general low expectations that come with video game movies. Fortunately, based on the relatively positive reception of the Sega adaptation, many fans and families will find this to be a pleasant surprise. Mostly harmless fun with a scene-stealing throwback performance from Jim Carrey, Sonic is nothing revolutionary but is hardly a prickly affair either. Here’s what critics are saying about Sonic the Hedgehog:Is it better than expected?I admit I had my reserves about Sonic the Hedgehog, but it completely blew my mind.  Tessa Smith, Mama s GeekyRaise your expectations. Sonic the Hedgehog is the first cinema surprise of the year.  Julian Roman, MovieWebA movie miracle or at the very least an unexpected surprise, this adaptation… largely presses all the right buttons — and even does so in the right order.  Oliver Jones, ObserverAre the updated visuals worth the wait? The effects, while maintaining fidelity to the popular video game, turned out stellar. Yolanda Machado, The WrapYou know what, it works. It’s a really effective rendering of the classic character many of us grew up playing. Wenlei Ma, News.com.auNot only did the animators go above and beyond in fixing Sonic to look more like his video game origins, but they might’ve saved the movie. Dami Lee, The VergeThe filmmakers were able to get what amounts to a stuffed toy to emote more successfully than, say, the filmmakers behind last summer’s The Lion King. Oliver Jones, ObserverIn the finished film this new, cartoony Sonic might be more aesthetically pleasing, but he’s a bizarre outlier in an otherwise photorealistic world. Huw Fullerton, Radio Times(Photo by Paramount Pictures)How does it rate as a video game movie?Sonic the Hedgehog succeeds where so many other video game adaptations fail because it captures the spirit of the games and the character. Spencer Perry, ComicBook.comSonic the Hedgehog is a fairly middling family-friendly adventure movie, but a comparably good video game adaptation. A.A. Dowd, AV ClubYou might have to go all the way back to 1993’s Super Mario Bros. to find such a striking disconnect between the experience of playing something at home and watching it in a theater. David Ehrlich, IndieWireIt’s not quite Detective Pikachu, but it’s fun enough. Huw Fullerton, Radio TimesHow is Jim Carrey?Sonic offers Jim Carrey in a performance almost as full-tilt as those of his mid- 90s heyday. . John DeFore, Hollywood ReporterCarrey’s physicality and comedic timing evoke memories of his Ace Ventura and Liar Liar heyday, proving the gifted comedian hasn’t lost his touch. Akeem Lawanson, IGNThis is peak Carrey, a delightfully unhinged, physical performance reminiscent of his work in Ace Ventura or The Mask. Wenlei Ma, News.com.auCarrey is the film’s most prized weapon…his vitality makes an otherwise routine endeavor worthwhile. The movie is fine, but the villain’s a delight. Bilge Ebiri, VultureHe’s far more animated than Sonic. And far too good for this. Steve Rose, Guardian(Photo by Paramount Pictures)And James Marsden?Marsden manages to mine the heartwarming moments with Sonic even if it’s ultimately not a standout turn in his career. Akeem Lawanson, IGNTo Marsden’s credit, there’s a natural camaraderie… which is impressive given that the critter was likely represented on set by a tennis ball on a stick. Jake Cole, SlantIs the movie funny?I found myself laughing out loud several times, and yes, I even shed a few tears. Tessa Smith, Mama s GeekyOne of the strengths of the film is that it s always throwing new gags and jokes at the audience, so even if one doesn t work, there s another right around the corner that arrives as quickly as Sonic himself. Spencer Perry, ComicBook.comGets away with [one fart joke], otherwise bypassing the all-too-common cheap laughs for a story that’s loaded with smart humor [and] snappy dialogue. Kristen Page-Kirby, Washington PostThe jokes are almost all uniformly awful, following a formula of some zany thing happening and a character merely describing aloud what just happened in an incredulous voice. Jake Cole, Slant(Photo by Paramount Pictures)How is the script? The script itself is very light-hearted, even with undercurrents about being an outsider and the loneliness that comes with it. Yolanda Machado, The WrapEven when grappling with potentially heavy themes like government-sponsored drone warfare and situational depression, Sonic the Hedgehog never loses its buoyant sense of storytelling. Oliver Jones, ObserverSonic the Hedgehog has a terrific script. Screenwriters Patrick Casey and Josh Miller infuse a lot of creativity into the Japanese source material. Julian Roman, MovieWebSonic the Hedgehog is frustratingly old-school in its condescension, as the filmmakers constantly hold the audience’s hand. Jake Cole, SlantWriters Patrick Casey and Josh Miller spend too much time trying to modernize Sonic… but they sacrifice so much of his character in the process. Rendy Jones, Rendy ReviewsIs it strictly for fans of the game?First and foremost for Sonic fans. If you’ve been there for the little blue fella these past 29 years… then Sonic the Hedgehog is the love letter you’re probably looking for. If you’ve never really cared for the Blue Blur, you’ll probably want to avoid this flick like one of Dr. Robotnik’s badniks. Akeem Lawanson, IGNIf you spent your afternoons collecting rings and battling Dr. Robotnik as a kid like I did, you will LOVE this movie. Tessa Smith, Mama s GeekyFans of the video games will find a host of allusions, but there’s plenty to please any moviegoer who can’t tell a Sega from a Switch. Kristen Page-Kirby, Washington Post(Photo by Paramount Pictures)Is it really family-friendly?Make no mistake, Sonic The Hedgehog is a kids’ movie, but there’s enough here for their parents so that it’s not a total slog. Wenlei Ma, News.com.auSonic is a children’s movie that recognizes it may be kids’ first introduction to the hedgehog, so it makes minimal references to the video game world he comes from. Dami Lee, The VergeSonic the Hedgehog is what a family movie should be – entertaining, delightful, a good story, fun for all ages, and packed with life lessons. Tania Lamb, Lola LambchopsFew but diehard fans and young children will be charmed by this predictable, derivative caper. Steve Rose, GuardianAny major complaints? It’s not a great sign of creative storytelling when a kids film plugs Amazon, Zillow, and Olive Garden in the span of a single scene, without a trace of irony. David Ehrlich, IndieWireI can put up with product placement that is tastefully done but if we pay for a ticket to a movie we don’t expect to constantly see advertisements especially in movies for children. Rachel Wagner, Rachel s ReviewsSonic could ve used more of the attitude that made him Sega s antithesis to Nintendo s Mario during the video game console wars. Travis Hopson, Punch Drunk CriticsTo add insult to injury, they added a sassy Black woman stereotype. Why is this present in 2020 and in a Sonic movie? Rendy Jones, Rendy ReviewsWill audiences want more?It has me beyond hyped for a sequel. Tessa Smith, Mama s GeekyHopefully Sonic the Hedgehog will get the chance to explore its world and take more risks in a followup. Molly Freeman, ScreenRantSonic the Hedgehog is in theaters on February 14.

The holiday weekend delivered nearly 0 million to a pair of new releases, though each are headed in different directions. One of them is looking to be the biggest film in its series, as well as having the second biggest opening over the Martin Luther King holiday. The other is on the path to become the first big disaster of the new year and decade. It is one of the few negatives within a top 10 set to rank as the fifth-biggest Martin Luther King holiday weekend ever.King of the Crop: Bad Boys for Life Dominates Weekend With .4 Million(Photo by Columbia Pictures)The two biggest MLK holiday moneymakers are American Sniper and Bad Boys for Life. The third entry in the very spaced-out series with Will Smith and Martin Lawrence earned an estimated .2 million over the weekend and .4 million in its first four days. That eclipses the .6 million that Ride Along opened to back in 2014 (the Ice Cube–Kevin Hart comedy was the MLK leader until Eastwood’s film exploded with 7.2 million the following year). Bad Boys II opened to .5 million in the summer of 2003. Bad Boys for Life’s total makes it the seventh best opening amongst sequels opening more than 10 years past their previous entry. It is a list that includes The Force Awakens, Jurassic World, Incredibles 2, Finding Dory, Toy Story 3, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull in front of it, and Men In Black 3, Mad Max: Fury Road, and Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines behind it.Depending on who you talk to, Bad Boys II is either one of the greatest action films ever made (see: Hot Fuzz) or one of the worst, most vile films ever produced (see: Michael Bay). For a July release it may have grossed 8.6 million, but that is still just a 2.97 multiple over its opening, representing on the lower scales of word-of-mouth success for a summer film. Of the 18 films to open between million– million in July only four films had a worse multiple (The Nutty Professor II, Lucy, 2016’s Ghostbusters and The Village). How will the million Bad Boys for Life rank with audiences? On the surface, it would seem unlikely for the film not to replace Paul Blart: Mall Cop as the all-time January champion with 6.33 million. (American Sniper technically began its run in December.) Given this third film is unchartered territory because of the disparity between the Sniper and Ride Along openings, it is hard to pinpoint precisely. On the other hand, only 25 percent of the true January-openers have had a multiple lower than the 2.46 Bad Boys for Life would need to knock down the Mall Cop, even if one of them was Taken 3.

urth highest-grossing film of the year, and it certainly has its eye on third place. Second, however, could take a bit of work. Last weekend with an opening that rose above 0 million, the fourth Toy Story was ahead of the third film in the franchise by about million. At the end of this weekend, it is still ahead of Toy Story 3’s pace by about million even if it trails weekend two of part three .3 million to .9 million. Toy Story 3 had a run that did not see a drop of 50 percent until its 13th weekend. Part four dropped 52 percent this weekend, but also had farther to fall. The 2010 chapter fell 46.2 percent and 49 percent in its second and third weekends. Meanwhile, Toy Story 4 sits at 6 million domestic and 6 million worldwide; the sixth-highest total of 2019 to date. Of the 14 films to gross between 0-250 million after 10 days, only three of them (The Hunger Games, Spider-Man, and Toy Story 3) broke the 0 million domestic mark, but Toy Story 4 remains on track.Fresh Surprise: Yesterday Poised To Be One of Danny Boyle’s Highest Grossers(Photo by Universal Pictures)It may sound surprising to some, but Yesterday actually represents the best opening of director Danny Boyle’s career. Then again, it is only the fourth film in his career — on that has included Transpotting, 127 Hours, and Slumdog Millionaire — to open wide its first weekend. The last film of his to do that was 28 Days Later back in 2003, and it earned million. The Beach in 2000 was his previous high with .2 million, even if it remains his lowest scored film on the Tomatometer at 20% and just one of two Rotten films (including A Life Less Ordinary) in his filmography. With a 59% rating currently, Yesterday teeters on the edge of Fresh, but Universal is very likely more interested in the film s million start. (The studio partnered with Boyle on 2015’s Steve Jobs, which opened strong in four theaters but ultimately grossed just .7 million total.) Boyle’s Oscar-winning Slumdog is his crowning box office achievement with over 1 million, but it is also just one of three of his films to gross over million. Yesterday will be the fourth. Will the million–budgeted film have enough word-of-mouth to pass The Beach’s million?Top 10 and Beyond: Latest Annabelle Film Lags the First Two(Photo by New Line Cinema)Annabelle Comes Home opened this past Wednesday to .18 million. As of Sunday, it is estimated to have made .2 million, which is relatively low all things considered. Of the previous Wednesday openers that began with million or more, 47 Ronin (.61 million), Rocky Balboa (.85), The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (.36), and Magic Mike XXL (.89) were the only ones this century to not have million by Sunday. Annabelle Comes Home is the next-lowest after that with The First Purge coming in at .28 million. The first Annabelle made .11 million in its first five days. Annabelle: Creation made .15 million. They both opened on Fridays. Those other three films grossed million to million domestic. The million production has already grossed over million globally, so it is going to be just fine.Eight of the top 10 films this week are either sequels or remakes. John Wick Chapter 3 – Parabellum is approaching 0 million worldwide. It is also Keanu Reeves’ third highest–grossing live-action film after the first two Matrix films. Illuminations’ The Secret Life of Pets 2 has not picked up any international steam yet and is only at 8 million worldwide. Its path is similar to that of this summer’s Pokemon Detective Pikachu and is headed for somewhere between 1 million and 4 million — or, less than 0 million domestically below the first film. Men in Black International is doing better internationally, but much more poorly here. It is only at 9 million worldwide and still needs another 1 million to break even. The remake of Child’s Play cost 0 million less than MIBI, but is not exactly setting the box office on fire either after dropping 70 percent in its second weekend and stands at million.Far more successful is Paramount’s Rocketman. The million production has made over million domestic and 1 million worldwide — 0 million may be off the table now but it remains on track to exceed million. Disney’s Aladdin has crossed 0 million domestically, and its 4 million globally puts it in 63rd place all-time. It needs another million to break into the top 50.Lastly, we have the Avengers: Endgame record watch. Returning to theaters this weekend with new footage not seen in its first nine weeks, the Marvel title made another .9 million. At .76 billion worldwide, it is now million shy of Avatar’s all-time record. This Time Last Year: Dinos Superheroes Emerge Victorious(Photo by Universal Pictures)Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom had no challengers and won the box office for a second straight weekend with .9 million. Incredibles 2 also had nothing to threaten its second-place finish with .4 million, bringing its total to over 0 million. The best the week could offer was the sequel, Sicario: Day of the Soldado, which opened in third with million. Also opening was the basketball comedy, Uncle Drew, which finished fourth with .2 million. The lackluster numbers below that title opened the door for Hindi film Sanju to finish in eighth place with .72 million. The Top 10 totaled 7.20 million and averaged 63% on the Tomatometer. This year’s Top 10 grossed an estimated 5.14 million and averaged 69%.On the Vine: Spider-Man Hopes for Avengers Bump, While Midsommar Chases Critical Acclaim(Photo by Sony Pictures)The next chapter of the MCU arrives when Tom Holland returns as Peter Parker in Spider-Man: Far From Home. Will this film receive the same kind of box office bump that got Iron Man 3 over 0 million as the first one out of the gate after the success of the 2012 Avengers film? It currently has a 91% on the Tomatometer. (Spider-Man: Homecoming has a 92%, opened at 7 million, and went on to make 0 million worldwide.)Then Ari Aster returns with a new horror epic after the praise of last year’s debut, Hereditary, one of the 10 best-reviewed horror films of the decade. Based on the 85% that Midsommar has received so far, Aster (like Jordan Peele) has a shot to own two films on that list. The Full Top 10: June 28-30Toy Story 4 (2019) 97% – .93 million (6.92 million total)Annabelle Comes Home (2019) 65% – .37 million (.20 million total)Yesterday (2019) 63% – million ( million total)Aladdin (2019) 57% – .34 million (5.86 million total)The Secret Life of Pets 2 (2019) 60% – .09 million (1.20 million total)Men in Black: International (2019) 23% – .55 million (.00 million total)Avengers: Endgame (2019) 94% – .53 million (1.31 million total)Child's Play (2019) 64% – .27 million (.40 million total)Rocketman (2019) 89% – .87 million (.17 million total)John Wick: Chapter 3 -- Parabellum (2019) 89% – .17 million (1.31 million total)
(Photo by © Marvel Studios 2021)This week’s episode of What If…?, with its double Doctor Stranges and magical madness, was a tour-de-force example of the power of the program s animation staff and further evidence of an emerging “prestige animation” format.“I think there s no denying that animation is having a moment and that new types of programs that we could not have done a few years ago, either because just the industry wouldn t go for it or because the technology wasn t there, is happening now,” What If ? animation supervisor Stephan Franck said when Rotten Tomatoes had a chance to talk to him and other members of the production team recently.“I sure hope so,” added production designer Paul Lasaine. “It’s been a long time coming, in the US, anyway.”While animation is varied in terms of genres, formats, and technical sophistication in other parts of the world, the United States market still aims most of its animation at all-ages demographics or younger children – not that this stops some adults from admiring available programs or appreciating the work involved in creating these shows. But What If…? definitely continues a trend toward sophistication in terms of story and craft roughly analogous to high-end, live-action series.“The directive we had from the studio was to push the limits, to really see how far animation can be pushed,” editor Graham Fisher said. “I think that as an anthology, it s probably one of the ambitious animated shows that s ever been made, just because you re going to see, as more and more episodes come out, no holds were barred in the making of the show. It s impossibly complicated.”Here we chat with some of the people who manage the complexity of What If…? and deliver that ambitious, prestige-style animation.Designing the Characters(Photo by © Marvel Studios 2021)For Ryan Meinerding, character designer and head of visual development, part of the fun is “starting from that firm ground of how people understand the characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe” and either building on those strong graphic designs or subverting them. “If you mix them, if you change a character, if you want to take a component of T Challa, meaning like his necklace, and sort of put that into a Star-Lord context, it allows you to be subtle.”On the other hand, the wicked Doctor Strange seen this week offered an opportunity to be more obvious in changing a Marvel icon. “[We could] do sort of classic, pointier chins and sharper shapes in the collar, and in a slightly darker costume while [Strange is] sort of gaunt in the face.” The result: a demonic take on the usually heroic character worthy of the wilder outcomes inherent to What If…?.“‘What if Dr. Strange busted his heart instead of his hands?’ meant that we could create that evil Dr. Strange in a very, very straightforward way,” Meinerding said. “I think one of the things that was super fun for me was having him go down that more evil road. By taking in those additional creatures to become more powerful, [there was] also a specific cost to him that he couldn t control at the end of that episode we saw the fun of that spiral spiraling out of control. Evil Strange exemplifies one of the great aspects of the show for Meinerding. As he put it, “so many of the conceits of each episode is really tied up with the design.”Although most of the characters on the series have their design origins in the live-action features, Meinerding relished the chance to visually define The Watcher and work him into unexpected moments in each episode. “The idea [is] that he s often painted into backgrounds, literally. Or, the notion that you re looking at him, and seeing the silhouette that s painted or executed with time and space,” he explained. “I think that s one of the more fun design challenges of the show: ‘How do we create a Watcher that feels like he s in every episode, but then you might have to look really hard to find him?’ Creating the Performances (Photo by © Marvel Studios 2021)Animation is full of obscure terms which, to even the enthusiast, are hard to keep straight. So a term like “animation supervisor” may sound like a purely administrative post. But according to Franck, his primary role on the series is far more direct: he aids the animation team in crafting the visual performances of the characters.“When you re doing an animated movie or TV show, you have half of the acting performance that is coming from the voice,” he explained. “They re creating a moment, they re getting everything you need to know about that moment and that scene. But it only exists [audibly]. So the animators think of themselves as actors who create the visual part of that performance.”Listening closely to those vocal tracks, it becomes the purview of the animator to determine the “look” of those sounds on a character’s face or how it translates into their movements. “[The actor] said it this way, is it one of those moments where she s saying what she means or is she lying? Or is it sarcastic? It s trying to really live [the moment], you just put yourself inside the performance and you re recreating the visual aspect of it.”In terms of the supervisor role, Franck works with all the animators to create those acting choices, whether it s through the movement or through the poses, and discover if it is the right one for the moment on screen. An example of those choices can be seen this week as Strange s expressions and body language reflect his increasing frustration about his inability to prevent the accident. But it is just one example of the 7,000 or so shots Franck supervised across the first season. “Every frame is important,” he said. So even small changes will make a scene that you think, ‘Yeah, I guess it s working’ [turn into] something more like, Wow!' Getting to that visceral reaction is always the goal.Showcasing the Environments(Photo by © Marvel Studios 2021)What If…? is also a wonderful showcase of Marvel’s expansive environments – from intergalactic bars to the Lost Library of Cagliostro. The person in charge of designing those landscapes is production designer Paul Lasaine. Working in the Marvel Multiverse means some of those locations will have certain Jack Kirby- or, in the case of Doctor Strange, Steve Ditko-feel to them – although Lasaine noted that creating the feel of What If…? as an animated series required a wider scope of reference material to get to its signature atmosphere. For one thing: The program s overall visual feel is inspired by the work of Saturday Evening Post cover artist J.C. Leyendecker, although Lasaine said that was “a beginning” of the show’s style. “If you look at Leyendecker and you look at our stuff, it s like, ‘Okay, I can kind of see it.’ It s not priority, it s its own thing. We started with that, and then we evolve into our final look, which is where we are at today.”The Kirby vibes, meanwhile, come out mostly in the look of the characters, although Lasaine pointed to the pulsating, bubbly energy effect known as “Kirby Crackle” as the most direct reference his team pulls from the legendary artist. “If we re trying to do [that] effect, then we re definitely looking at Kirby,” he said. But as his department is concerned with giving the show some of its more cinematic feel, they also look to the work of live action cinematographers like Roger Deakins (Skyfall) and Darius Kondji (Seven). The results lead to the colors used and the sense of smoke or atmosphere in What If…?’s take on the Sanctum Santorum or the “trippy hellscape” Strange enters to absorb demonic beings, to say nothing of the Lost Library itself, one of the locations Lasaine and his team built specifically for Episode 4.Cutting the Action
This Week s Ketchup brings you more headlines from the world of film development news, covering new films from the Academy Award nominated directors of Black Swan and American Hustle, and more. This WEEK S TOP STORYCHRIS EVANS TO RETURN TO THE MCU, BUT HOW?(Photo by Jay Maidment/©Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)When it comes to big-budget superhero movies, press releases will frequently keep some details hidden or vague in the interest of not spoiling the film s premise or story beats. This week s big news, however, was possibly a rare example of film speculation run amok. Let s start with the baseline story, which is that Chris Evans is expected to return for at least one more Marvel Studios film after ostensibly leaving the role of Captain America in Avengers: Endgame (Certified Fresh at 94%). Most sources reporting the announcement filled in the blanks to assume Evans was returning as Steve Rogers, but the original story didn t actually say that. The other possibility to consider is that Evans could be reprising his role as Fantastic Four member Johnny Storm, A.K.A. The Human Torch, possibly in a small cameo role. Kevin Feige confirmed just a few weeks ago that he is currently casting the Fantastic Four reboot, and we ve also heard recently about the next Spider-Man movie bringing in actors who played villains in the Spider-Man movies starring Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield. So, it seems plausible that alternate realities or a multiverse could be at play in the future of the MCU, and Chris Evans could have a cameo as someone other than Captain America (it would also explain why Evans tweeted News to me in response to the Captain America speculation). Having said that, if Evans is returning as Captain America, the obvious explanation would involve time travel. We already know from the Loki trailer and the casting of Jonathan Majors as the time-traveling villain Kang in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania that the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe will likely feature be very wibbly wobbly timey wimey. We ll just have to wait and see.Other Top Headlines1. We still don t have a title for his next film yet, which has already signed Christian Bale, Margot  Robbie, and Tenet star John David Washington. The cast expanded twice this week, starting on Wednesday with the news that Rami Malek (Bohemian Rhapsody) and Zoe Saldana (Marvel s Gamora) had signed on. The very next day, the cast grew even bigger with the additions of Robert De Niro, Mike Myers, Alessandro Nivola, Timothy Olyphant, Andrea Riseborough, Chris Rock, Matthias Shoenaerts, Michael Shannon, and Anya-Taylor Joy (The Witch, The Queen s Gambit). The project is currently filming in Los Angeles, but details are being kept vague as to what it s actually about, except that Christian Bale and Margot Robbie are playing a doctor and a lawyer (not necessarily respectively). Whatever the movie ends up being titled, the end result will be distributed by 20th Century Studios, possibly as a late 2021 awards season release.2. DARREN ARONOFSKY CASTS BRENDAN FRASER AS THE WHALE (Photo by ©Lionsgate)After taking a few years following his most recent film, 2017 s mother! (Fresh at 68%), director Darren Aronofsky (The Wrestler, Black Swan) appears to be getting closer to filming his next, an adaptation of the 2012 play The Whale by playwright Samuel D. Hunter. For the lead role, Aronofsky has cast Brendan Fraser to play a six hundred pound recluse hiding away from the world and slowly eating himself to death. A24 will be distributing The Whale, but the project does not currently have an announced production start date, so we don t have a firm idea of when it might be released, either.3. BEN AFFLECK JOINS DISNEY TO DIRECT KEEPER OF THE LOST CITIES (Photo by Universal Pictures)Author Shannon Messenger s 2012 children s fantasy novel Keeper of the Lost Cities has become a series of nine books (and counting), including a few New York Times bestsellers. Walt Disney Pictures obviously hasn t gotten out of the live-action fantasy movie business, but aside from something like Artemis Fowl, many of their films in that zone lately have been remakes of their animated classics. In that light, it makes total sense that Disney is moving forward with a Keeper of the Lost Cities movie, but what s more surprising is that it s Ben Affleck (Argo, Certified Fresh at 96%) who they ve hired to direct and co-write the adaptation. Studio-wise, the hiring of Ben Affleck is sort of a get for Disney, since he has worked quite a bit for Warner Bros. in recent years, including appearance in a few recent movies (and an upcoming HBO Max mini-series) as Batman.4. THE GOOD WIFE WRITER TAKING ON SENATOR JOHN MCCAIN BIOPIC  (Photo by Robert Spencer/Getty Images)This coming August 25th will mark the third anniversary of the death of U.S. Senator John McCain, whose other accomplishments include surviving five years as a prisoner of war in Vietnam and his two campaigns for president in 2000 and 2008. McCain s life has been detailed in a number of books, and this week, three of them (The Luckiest Man: Life with John McCain, Faith of My Fathers, and Worth the Fighting For) written by former McCain speechwriter and chief of staff Mark Salter were optioned by Stampede Ventures to be adapted into a bigraphical feature film. Stampede Ventures is also the production company currently developing Frosty the Snowman starring Jason Momoa and the Walter Cronkite drama Newsflash. Salter will also co-write the adaptation with producer Craig Turk (TV s The Good Wife, F.B.I.), with McCain s widow Cindy McCain acting as the project s executive producer. Faith of My Fathers was adapted as a TV movie in 2005 with John McCain portrayed by Shawn Hatosy, and Ed Harris also co-starred as McCain in the HBO film Game Change (Fresh at 67%).5. FIRST FEMALE DIRECTOR ALICE GUY-BLACHÉ GETTING HER OWN BIOPIC (Photo by Everett Collection)We recently started a new year, which also could have offered a good jumping off point for the #52FilmsbyWomen challenge, during which movie fans commit to watching at least one movie from a female director every week for a full year. Although male directors ha obviously dominated the industry for much of the last 120+ years, the very first female film director, Alice Guy-Blaché, made her debut in 1896 with the short film The Fairy of the Cabbages (note: in 1896, all movies were short films). The life of Alice Guy-Blaché is now being developed as a biopic from the same filmmakers who also adapted her life story as the 2018 documentary Be Natural: The Untold Story of Alice Guy-Blaché (Certified Fresh at 95%). At the time a secretary for the Gaumont studio, Guy-Blaché was actually in the room when the Lumiere Brothers held their very first public screening in 1895, and within a year she was making her own movies. This eventually led her to America, where she directed over 1,000 short films during the Silent Film Era, working with stars like Lionel and Ethel Barrymore. Jodie Foster narrated the Be Natural documentary, but it s not yet known if she will also be involved with the biopic.6. CARDI B TO MAKE HER LEAD ACTING DEBUT WITH ASSISTED LIVING (Photo by Stephane Cardinale - Corbis/Getty Images)Rapper and pop star Cardi B has had a lot of success in her musical career, but it has been less than three years since her first studio album came out, and only 16 months since she made her feature film acting debut in Hustlers (Certified Fresh at 87%), starring Jennifer Lopez and Constance Wu (admittedly, Cardi B s screentime in Hustlers is almost blink-and-you ll-miss-her). With all that in mind, she s ready to take on a lead role, as she is now signed to star in a Paramount Pictures comedy in the vein of classic funny films like Tootsie, Sister Act, and Mrs. Doubtfire called Assisted Living. Cardi B will play a small-time crook on the run from the law who finds refuge disguising herself as an elderly resident at her grandmother s nursing home. Assisted Living got its start at Paramount as a spec script by TV producer and writer Kay Oyegun (This is Us). Cardi B will also have a supporting role in Fast Furious 9 (5/28/2021, tentatively).7. ANNA PAQUIN JOINS SHAZAM! STAR IN FOOTBALL BIOPIC AMERICAN UNDERDOG (Photo by Jason Smith/Everett Collection)One of the last films to have a wide release in the USA in 2020 before COVID-19 shut down theaters was the faith-based romance I Still Believe (Rotten at 51%), which still managed to earn back its production budget (.4 million against million). That film was the first from a new faith-based production company called Kingdom Story Company, and their second and third movies will both feature Shazam! star Zachary Levi. The teen drama Unbreakable Boy is currently filming, and production will soon start on the football biopic American Underdog: The Kurt Warner Story. Zachary Levi will star as Warner, who overcame a series of hurdles (including having the bad luck of trying out for the QB job for the Green Bay Packers early in Brett Favre s career) to become the only person inducted into both the Pro Football Hall of Fame and the Arena Football Hall of Fame. The news this week is that True Blood and The Piano star Anna Paquin has also signed on to co-star as Brenda Warner, Kurt Warner s wife. American Underdog will be directed by Andrew and Jon Erwin (who also directed I Still Believe) and the film will be distributed by Lionsgate.8. MICHAEL PEÑA JOINS ROLAND EMMERICH S DISASTER MOVIE MOONFALL(Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)After trying a few other genres (Anonymous, Stonewall), disaster movie specialist Roland Emmerich has been getting back to his roots more recently (Independence Day: Resurgence and the war movie Midway), and will especially do so with Moonfall, which is about exactly what it sounds like. The Moonfall ensemble cast will include Halle Berry, Charlie Plummer, Donald Sutherland, Patrick Wilson, John Bradley (Samwell Tarley from Game of Thrones), and until this week, Transformers star Stanley Tucci. Tucci had to drop out of the production due to recently imposed travel restrictions preventing him from flying from the U.K. to Canada where the film is being produced. Instead, Ant-Man MVP supporting actor Michael Peña has signed on for Tucci s role as a a wealthy car dealer who is married to the ex-wife of Patrick Wilson s character. Presumably, some of those used cars are about to get demolished by some big old moon rocks.9. ARMIE HAMMER DROPS OUT OF J.LO ROMCOM SHOTGUN WEDDING (Photo by Daniel Smith/Warner Bros.)Armie Hammer became the focus of an online controversy this week, the nature of which we won t get into. The news came out just before Hammer was about to spend four months in the Dominican Republic filming the romantic comedy Shotgun Wedding with Jennifer Lopez, but the production will now need to recast the role, as he has dropped out. This will actually be the second time the role will be recast, as it was originally supposed to be played by Ryan Reynolds (who is still executive producing Shotgun Wedding). Lopez and whoever-replaces-Armie-Hammer will star in Shotgun Wedding as a couple having a destination wedding in the Caribbean who then begin to get cold feet, just as everybody in the wedding party also gets taken hostage. Shotgun Wedding will be directed by Jason Moore (Pitch Perfect, Sisters) from a screenplay by Liz Meriwether (No Strings Attached) and Mark Hammer (Two Night Stand), who as far as we can tell, isn t related to Armie Hammer. On an Apple device? From its curiously involved narrator (James Brolin) to its leading protagonist, human-deer Hybrid child Gus (Christian Convery), Sweet Tooth surprised viewers with its mix of post-apocalyptic dread, boy s adventure, and the brightly-colored hope of a world slowly repairing itself. At only eight episodes, the series — based on the comic book by Jeff Lemire — left us on something of a cliffhanger, but enough of the characters and stories have converged to give us some idea of where the program will go next.Rot

Ghcxuf TV news didn t rest over the weekend — instead, DC Universe, AMC, History, BBC America, and more network shared news with reporters at the Television Critics Association winter press tour in Los Angeles on Saturday and Sunday. Read on to find out new intel on Killing Eve, Knightfall, Doom Patrol, and more.TOP STORYHow Doom Patrol Sets a New Tone for DC TVThere’s plenty of source material available for the showrunners of Doom Patrol, DC Universe’s second live-action series, to choose from when breaking stories. Showrunner Jeremy Carver said the series dips into several different versions of the characters in the series.“A great jumping off point is the Grant Morrison run in the ’90s,” Carver told reporters at a Television Critics Association winter press tour panel in Los Angeles over the weekend. “We dip into the Silver Age where we are seeing the Celsius and Lodestone characters. We’re going to see some other characters that have graced over the years, such as Danny the Street. We’re going to see one of my more beloved characters, the Beard Hunter.”While most of DC’s television properties live on the CW, land of the perma-shirtless, sexy twentysomethings, this cast includes decidedly non-twentysomethings Brendan Fraser, Timothy Dalton, and Alan Tudyk. But fans of DC’s CW series will not be put off by the age-diverse cast of Doom Patrol, which premieres Feb. 15.“I think DC has made a decision, quite smartly, to separate the feature world and the television world,” executive producer Sarah Schechter explained. “I don’t think there’s been any confusion, and comic books have always had multiple versions of the same character, created by different writers, different artists, with different adventures. I think it’s really fun, I think that the two work really nicely together, and help fans to experience fully the characters that they love.”What Do Killing Eve and Harry Potter Have in Common (Besides Fiona Shaw)?(Photo by Aimee Spinks/BBC America)New Killing Eve showrunner Emerald Fennell took over for the Emmy-winning series’ second season from creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge (who focused on the second season of her Amazon series, Fleabag, instead). But star Sandra Oh told reporters at the show’s TCA panel that the transition between the two was seamless.“Emerald and Phoebe are friends and had been friends for a long time,” Oh said. “I feel like they have a kinship — the sensibility, where they come from, their humor, their style. And Emerald has her own voice entirely, but it really moves from one hand to a similar hand.”When the series comes back to BBC America on April 7, it’ll pick up approximately 30 seconds after the events of the season 1 finale, and Eve (Oh) and Villanelle (Jodie Comer) will be at odds once again. The duo said that their characters’ relationship will definitely evolve in season 2.“I think what is most interesting about Eve’s stabbing Villanelle at the end of series 1 is Villanelle’s reaction to that, and just how emotionally she perceives that. And I think it both affects them and changes them in a way neither of them are quite expecting,” Comer said.(Photo by Aimee Spinks/BBC America)Added Oh, “And I think you see them vulnerable in slightly different ways. They’ve crossed the line and there’s no going back. I think we have a lot of energy at the beginning of the series, and that pushes both of them into a different place of vulnerability.”The characters are inextricably linked to one another, much like two other famous literary characters from the past 20 years — Harry Potter and He Who Must Not Be Named, of course, where neither can live while the other survives.“I kind of like the Harry Potter theory,” Comer said.Joked Fennell, “So Villanelle’s a Horcrux.”In all seriousness, though, the characters’ true relationship is still being explored.“It’s something that we’re also still figuring out and finding the pieces to as we play out scenes on set, which is actually really exciting, Comer said. I actually really like the fact that we can’t put our finger on it.”New Knightfall Star Mark Hamill on the Ties Between the Knights Templar and Star Wars’ JediThe Star Wars film saga s Luke Skywalker, Mark Hamill, joins the second season of History’s Knightfall as Talus, a tough, wise, hardened, and devout master who trains new members of the Knights Templar and who spent 10 years being tortured as a POW during a Crusade. Hamill told reporters at a TCA panel for the show that he never intended taking on a project like Knightfall, but was hooked after watching a few episodes.“I just thought, ‘I’ve never been offered anything like this before.’ I mean, I’d never done a character quite like this before — a religious zealot, a man of deep convictions, and, yet, such a paradox, Hamill said. He’s lecturing the troops and he says, ‘Once you become a Templar knight you shall become God’s executioners.’ How could there be such a thing? I thought, ‘Thou shalt not kill.’ But that’s the thing, I was flattered that they would think of me in such a diverse character part, and I thought, ‘Oh, I have to do this. I really do have to do this,’ to be part of a largely British cast and in a period drama like this, which I’d never done before. That’s what I look for: challenges to try not to repeat yourself, and this was certainly a challenge.”It’s no secret that the Knights Templar inspired another secret order Hamill has been a part of (Star Wars’ Jedi, duh). But the ties between the two actually didn’t occur to him until he’d already said yes.“I didn’t really think it through, but the truth of the matter is that I’m sure George Lucas came from so many different inspirations of his own, both from the movies and literature, Hamill said. He was probably thinking more of King Arthur and the Knights of the Roundtable, because it was more idealized and glamorous, certainly, than the Templar Knights, but there’s no question that his inspiration was rooted, partially, in this mythology.”Pennyworth Creators Explain Why Batman’s Butler Needs an Origin Series(Photo by Epix)Fox’s Batman prequel series, Gotham, is coming to an end this year. But more pre-Batman stories will continue to be told on television in Epix’s Pennyworth, an origin story about the early life of Batman’s butler, Alfred Pennyworth (played by Jack Bannon).“It’s really the chance to make him the center of a story and explain that journey: How did he get from being a young SAS soldier to being a butler in America? And it also gives us a chance to create a real world around him, a world in England that fits the whole DC universe,” executive producer Bruno Heller said. “It’s surprising to all of us the depth and range that you can go to with this character.”While the character’s creator, Bob Kane, set the 1930s as Alfred’s origin, but the Epix series is set in the 1960s. Executive producer Danny Cannon said that as someone from London, that seemed like the most dynamic time period to set a show.“It’s after the war, before things change for good. You could see the change in the air. Things were happening, culturally, artistically, that — it was an inspiring time, I think, that English people always revisit,” Cannon said. “So, to say that that was the foundations of which we were starting with and then making it 13 degrees more DC, 13 degrees darker [is when the series] really came alive for us.”The Story Behind NOS4A2’s Title(Photo by Zach Dilgard/AMC)The people involved in AMC’s new supernatural horror series NOS4A2 know that the title (pronounced like “Nosferatu”) is a little bit out of the ordinary. But the series, which stars Zachary Quinto as a vampire of sorts who feeds on the souls of children, is based on the book of the same name by Joe Hill (who happens to be the son of Stephen King), and series creator Jami O’Brien said the cast and producers are going to do their best to educate the audience about it.“One of the wonderful things about the book is that there are a lot of word games in it. One of the characters is a Scrabble master and librarian. And I think that the title itself, you know, Manx [played by Quinto] talks about it deeper in the book than where we get in the first season, but it’s a joke. And it’s also a puzzle,” O’Brien said. “And I think both of those things speak to the humor of the book and the humor of the character and is kind of a fun twist on the vampire genre, you know? Charlie Manx is a kind of vampire, but he’s not any kind of vampire that we’ve seen before. He doesn’t suck blood. He sucks souls. So, I think it’s a little irreverent, and I think — I’m glad that we have it because I think it’s a lot of fun.” 😈😈

Stranger Things returns to Netflix on July 4, and the streaming service has finally released a full trailer for the show s new season. We ve been tracking season 3 info all year, but the two minutes and 45 seconds of footage in the trailer are the clearest look we ve had yet — and provided eight new revelations about the upcoming season, whose tagline reads one summer can change everything. David Harbour, Winona Ryder, Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, Noah Schnapp, Sadie Sink, Natalia Dyer, Charlie Heaton, Dacre Montgomery and Joe Keery all return for season 3, and they ll be joined by new cast members Cary Elwes, Jake Busey, Maya Hawke, and Francesca Reale. While the few teases Netflix has released have — in true Stranger Things fashion —been vague, the new trailer revealed some telling information about the upcoming season. Here s everything we know about the mysteries set to unfold in Stranger Things season 3.1. DUSTIN IS HOME FROM CAMP(Photo by Netflix)Dustin (Matarazzo) spent part of his summer at Camp Know Where (which, judging by the icon, is a computer camp), complete with classic 80s uniform of khaki shorts and a green-and-yellow ringer T-shirt.The other kids surprise him upon his return home, and Eleven (Brown) controls his robot toys to make him follow them into the living room. There was probably an easier way to surprise Dustin without giving herself a bloody nose.2. THE KIDS HAVE A SUMMER PROJECT(Photo by Netflix)Phone home much? The kids’ summer project seems to be putting up a big antenna on the top of a hill. Given all the creatures the group has encountered without seeking them out, you’d think they d enjoy being off the grid, but we ll see what this antenna is all about.3. ELEVEN AND MAX ARE BONDING(Photo by Netflix)Eleven spent most of season 2 separated from the boys, so this summer is the first chance she’s had in a while to play with other kids. It looks like she’s getting really close to Max (Sink) as they play in her bedroom, then head to the mall food court — where Eleven looks like a kid going to Disneyland for the first time. They also slide in between the escalators. Don’t try this at home, kids.4. THE TOWN FAIR IS A DANGEROUS PLACEWe knew about the swimming pool featured prominently in the trailer, but not Hawkins town-wide Fun Fair (or, rather, Mayor Kline’s Fun Fair). Kline (Elwes) hosts a Fourth of July event at the fair in the trailer, and there’s a gunman stalking the hall of mirrors.5. HOPPER HAS A DATE(Photo by Netflix)We see Hopper (Harbour) all dressed up (in a nice Miami Vice–style light suit) at a table for two, but his date isn’t there yet. We hope he hasn’t been stood up. It s nice to see Hopper s casual summerwear, too, as he tells Nancy (Ryder), “I want you to feel like this can still be your home.”6. THERE S POLITICAL TURMOILThere’s a big protest outside the mayor’s office with homemade signs reading “Mayor Swine,” “Support Downtown,” and “Hawkins is Downtown.” If the 80s taught us anything, it s that small towns face an uphill battle.7. BILLY HARGROVE IS ON THE PROWL(Photo by Netflix)Summer at the Hawkins pool is a great chance for Billy (Montgomery) to show off his abs. He s making eyes at the lifeguard (Reale) in the trailer, so why is he macking on Karen Wheeler (Cara Buono) in the above photo?8. OF COURSE, MORE MONSTERSWe get one clear shot of a big new monster growling in the hallway — and it s not even the Shadow Monster, who’s still lurking around the Upside Down. And in one of the shorter, fast-paced clips at the end of the trailer, it looks like Billy has a nasty bite that’s getting infected.9. STARCOURT MALL IS OPENING IN HAWKINSNetflix previously released a trailer featuring Hawkins fictional Starcourt Mall, which includes such staple 80s stores as The Gap, Waldenbooks, and Sam Goody music. Only The Gap still exists here in 2018. In the food court, we got a glimpse of Steve Harrington (Keery) working at the fictional ice cream shop Scoops Ahoy, along with a new character Robin (Hawke). Hope there s no demogorgon in the Rocky Road.10. IT’S SUMMER(Photo by Charley Gallay/Getty Images for Netflix)Seasons 1 and 2 of Stranger Things both took place when the kids were in school, with season 2 even culminating at the winter ball. So it’s about time they enjoy a summer break.“It’s about the swimming pool and campfires and parades and Fourth of July and fireworks,” Shawn Levy told Variety at PaleyFest in March 2018. “So there’s kind of a poppy fun to season 3 that’s really enjoyable before things inevitably turn super dark.”On the red carpet for Netflix s annual FYSEE event in 2018, Brown was coy about Eleven’s appreciation of the summer: “Eleven has a great time with summer. That’s all I can say.”11. WE HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL SUMMER TO SEE ITStranger Things season 3 was supposed to return in 2018 (and was filmed and ready to go), but Netflix pushed the premiere to summer 2019. Netflix Vice President of Original Series Cindy Holland told the Television Critics Association that the production team needed more time to create bigger visual effects.“There are more special effects, and I think it’s going to be a really exciting season, but it just takes a little more time,” Holland said. “It’s a hand-crafted show. The Duffer Brothers and Shawn Levy have worked really hard, and they understand the stakes are high. They want to deliver something bigger and better than what they did last year. I think it’s going to be a fantastic season, worth the wait.”12. IT S 1985(Photo by Charley Gallay/Getty Images for Netflix)Jumping ahead to the summer sets season 3 firmly in 1985, Levy told The Hollywood Reporter in March 2018. For those of you who didn’t get to live through that glorious summer, it was the time when Back to the Future, The Goonies, and Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure came out. Stranger Things star Noah Schnapp suspects the boys have seen those movies.“Yeah, of course,” Schnapp told Rotten Tomatoes at FYSEE. “There are so many references from different things from the ’80s. They do such a good job of it.”13. THE POOL HAS A MYSTERIOUS NEW LIFEGUARD(Photo by Charley Gallay/Getty Images for Netflix)The show has cast Francesca Reale (Haters Back Off!) as the Hawkins Community Pool Lifeguard, Deadline reported. The lifeguard is said to “become a centerpiece of a dark mystery.”Other new casting includes Elwes as Mayor Kline and Jake Busey as a reporter for the Hawkins Post, whom we see glimpses of in the new trailer.14. MAYA HAWKE JOINS THE CAST(Photo by Charley Gallay/Getty Images for Netflix)Casting director Carmen Cuba said on a panel that Hawke (PBS s Little Women), whose character is being described as an “alternative girl,” is a true talent. (Plus, judging from both the teaser video and the trailer, she wears a Scoops Ahoy uniform well.)“What’s great about her, just like these kids and the other one, is that she’s just an individual,” Cuba said. “There is not another human on this Earth like Maya Hawke — her rhythm, her energy, her humor.”Whoever Hawke plays has scenes with Eleven too, Brown revealed during the panel.“She’s so good,” Brown said. “I remember the Duffers and I looked at each other and were like, ‘Wow, she’s really good.’ I want to say so much more, but I can’t.”15. SIBLINGS HAVE BIGGER ROLES(Photo by Netflix )Priah Ferguson has been made a series regular, so expect to see Lucas little sister Erica hassling the boys a lot more. Take that, nerds.Levy also told THR that Keery would have more to do as Steve Harrington. Even though he s not related to any of the boys, Steve protecting them as a father figure worked out so well that they’re going with that.“We’ll definitely get to see some more of Steve Harringon in season 3,” Levy said. “I’ll just say we won’t be abandoning the Dad Steve magic.”16. THE COUPLES FROM THE DANCE ARE STILL COUPLES(Photo by Netflix)The winter ball saw Eleven and Mike (Wolfhard) pair off and share a kiss, and Lucas (McLaughlin) and Max kiss too. Those couples are still together in the summer, Levy told THR. That does not include, however, Dustin and Nancy (Dyer), who was being nice at the ball, but promised Dustin the girls would appreciate him when they’re older. Brown also told Variety more recently that season 3 finds Eleven adjusting to her human side.“It’s really a coming of age for her and understanding what being a normal teenage girl is,” Brown said.17. THE SHADOW MONSTER HASN’T GONE ANYWHERE(Photo by Netflix)The kids may have vanquished the demogorgon in season 1 and demodog in season 2, but the big shadow monster is still waiting for them.“The shadow monster is still lurking up there out there in the Upside Down,” Levy told Variety. “He is determined to find a way to achieve his goals.”18. THEY’VE BEEN FILMING SINCE APRILNetflix released this video of the Stranger Things cast gathering for the first season 3 table read back in April of 2018, and confirmed that production began on April 20 of that year.19. EVERYONE’S GETTING PAID MORE(Photo by Charley Gallay/Getty Images for Netflix)The first bit of season 3 news ever reported concerned the pay raises given to the Stranger Things cast: The main young cast got bumps to between 0,000 and 0,000 an episode, while Ryder and Harbour could have gotten as much as 0,000, Deadline reported. They’ve earned it, making Stranger Things Netflix’s biggest original series hit. Even Dyer and Heaton joined the six-figures club, with between 0,000-150,000 per episode.Stranger Things seasons 1 and 2 are now streaming on Netflix.
