Jacqueline Coley for Rotten Tomatoes: I know you guys said that Uncut Gems had been in your head for 10 years, this idea of telling the story with Howard. So, was this a guy that you recognize from your own personal experience? Why was Howard this character that you were always continually writing over the years? Benny Safdie: In a weird way, the writing part of it is strange, because you have a 10-year project, you have this thing; it s kind of like a receptacle for all of your ideas and your life. It becomes a character that becomes analogous. As a filmmaker who is hustling, trying to get work, trying to get this made, you can t help but try to do whatever you have to do to get to see your dream come to fruition – so you can relate to Howard in that regards. But Howard, there was something about the relentlessness about Howard s pursuit of his own dream. That and the fact that he was trying to not only realize his dream against all circumstances, but also that he was able to be a provider, that he was this guy who provided for all these people around him. He was a world-creator, and he was a vanguard world-creator. Just the idea that Howard was somebody who was never going to stop in pursuit of his dream, and knowing that, in the end, it s going to be good for everybody. You know what I mean? There s something about that, that was very helpful.Josh Safdie: And I ll just add one thing, that he is, almost in a weird way, kind of this archetypal character of a dreamer, but also there s this kind of Jewishness to him. There s all of these characters and literature and movies that it was a feeling of, OK, I want to add to that. I want to build up a guy who was like these people that I ve kind of admired, looked at. Rotten Tomatoes: Talk about casting Adam Sandler as this man you had built up. Benny: Sandler was paramount, always. He s the only person who can make Howard lovable and also infuse the character s insane optimism as a gambler with a humor, with an element of humor, with an air of humor. The humor is so important to the way the film functions. Yes, it s this very tense film that s literally, like, your heart feels like it s going to implode because it s such a tense thriller. But without that comic relief that Sandler so effortlessly infuses into Howard, the movie just does not function. And Howard is, he s a patriarch, and so is Sandler.Josh: Also, whenever Sandler is in a movie, you root for him in the face of the most absurd situations. You really believe the things are happening to him and he s feeling them. So, in this in particular, you need to be rooting for Howard to succeed, because again, all of the things fall into place after that. You know, you could not like him, but you are loving him. And if you re yelling at the screen, you are yelling at him to not do things. And you only do that to people who you want to see good things happen to.Rotten Tomatoes: This movie has gotten everybody all kinds of excited, but people have seen Good Time. They know how tense you guys are. Give me a quick one-liner to prep folks for what they should expect going into the film.Josh: I think they can expect an immersive, thrilling experience that will keep you laughing on the edge of your seat to the point that you fall down and you sit on someone else s popcorn.Benny: Yeah. And you will also hope we have the feeling of actually moving to the edge of your seat.Uncut Gems is in theaters everywhere.亚博官方网站APP下载The news that Patrick Stewart had, after 19 years, agreed to return to the character of Jean-Luc Picard, the Star Trek role that made him a global celebrity, sparked loads of excitement among the fanbase. As the 79-year-old actor explained, the decision to head back into the universe that Gene Roddenberry created, relied on the caveat that Picard would boldly go where no Star Trek series has gone before. I don t mean to give any offense to anyone, but I struggled a little bit with this issue, Stewart told select members of the press at the official junket for Star Trek: Picard. I was so obsessed with this idea that we must leave The Next Generation behind, that we must pull the curtain down on that and explore new things. In the latest Star Trek series on CBS All Access, a strong ensemble of Star Trek newcomers join Stewart; Isa Briones plays the mysterious Dahj, Michelle Hurd appears as former Starfleet Officer Raffi Musiker, Alison Pill plays Dr. Agnes Jurati, and Santiago Cabrera takes on the role of hot-headed pilot, Chris Rios. It is not the same world when we wrapped The Next Generation, Stewart continued. And I argued that I wanted that change and that world to be reflected insofar as it affected Jean-Luc and what had happened to him. The backstory of those 19 years is very, very important. But the great thing about it is — and I wasn t prepared for this — I discovered I also lived through those 19 years; Patrick had lived through them. And I had changed. I m different. I feel differently about the world that I m living in, and in subtle ways. (Photo by Matt Kennedy/CBS)As Star Trek fans know, there are multiple timelines that exist within this cinematic universe. That can add continuity confusion, depending on a viewer s expectations with Star Trek: Picard. Showrunner Alex Kurtzman explained that the Romulan supernova that impacted the events of J.J. Abrams 2009 movie, which sparked a new timeline and universe separate from the original Star Trek series — this event is also referenced in Picard — is the catalyst for the vastly different timelines that exist across the Star Trek universe. That s a lot to take in for new viewers, but the return of Stewart in his iconic role will most likely be a huge draw for people to tune in. Through all the strife Picard has been dealt since we last saw him, he s still the highly-revered Starfleet admiral fans have grown to love and respect. We live in a continuity of a timeline, Kurtzman said. There s emotional experiences that have certainly informed the show, but [Patrick Stewart] did not want to just play the part he had played in the same way. And I think you ll find, as you go on that, fundamentally, Picard, as a character, has not changed. He s not the dark angry version of Picard. He s still very much the man you know from Next Generation. But the circumstances of his life have changed radically and threw him off course. And so he s really wrestling with who he is now and what it means to be Picard in a world where not only does he not have an army, but things are very, very gray. How do you hold on to your clear moral compass in a world that s very gray? There is no greater captain in my mind for that challenge than Picard. (Photo by James Dimmock/CBS)According to series co-creator Michael Chabon, one of the themes Star Trek: Picard explores is the it s never too late concept of age and retrospection. This, according to Chabon, is something mostly unseen in the Star Trek universe. What we haven t ever had before, not just on Star Trek, but on almost any television show ever, and certainly any kind of serious dramatic television show is a central protagonist — a hero — who is effectively 80-years-old. Patrick was 78 when we started, he is 79 now. Jean-Luc Picard, in canon, is about 92. To have a person at that point in his life, reckoning with that question of: What does it mean to be a man, a human, a captain, a leader? And now he s an old man and he s still trying to answer that question, just like Star Trek is always trying to answer that question, but he s answering it in a different way than he did before. (Photo by James Dimmock/CBS)Discovery ended up being the first series in the Star Trek television universe that strayed from the narrative formula of exploring a different mission on-board a starship in every episode. Star Trek: Picard takes that storytelling baton and runs with it. Not only does much of the program take place on Earth, the series, which Kurtzman identifies as the first true adult drama in the world of Star Trek, hones its focus on the characters in the world and not just that of Jean-Luc Picard. Uniquely, that s a kind of storytelling which I don t think has been done much, period. Much less, in Star Trek, executive producer Akiva Goldsman added. So we re super delighted by that prospect because, as storytellers, it gets us to do the narrative hours in a way that s different and complicated. Relationships get to change and move, and you get to show one thing and then reverse it up. (Photo by James Dimmock/CBS)As much as the team was able to switch things up and delve into a more character-driven storyline, essentially creating a 10-hour movie, in the process, Goldsman asserted that Star Trek: Picard was made for both the die-hard Trek fans and newbies alike. We re trying to be able to deliver emotion and information and philosophy and character in a way that is engaging because you re watching it, Goldsman said. And if you know everything about it, you re like, Well, that was cool. And if you know nothing about it, you re like, Well, that was cool. And it might be cool, differently. It may have more color, or more revelation, depending on where you live in that spectrum of audience. But we really, really wanted to be welcoming of a listener s heart. Because that s part of the story we re trying to tell. Chabon agreed: We were absolutely committed to the idea that we wanted to make a show that, if you ve never seen Star Trek — if you re not sure what Star Trek really is even all about and you think you don t like Star Trek because what you ve seen before hasn t really grabbed you — or if you re a total novice, you will be able to sit down and still watch the show and enjoy it. (Photo by James Dimmock/CBS)Of course, having Patrick Stewart involved helps. The familiarity of fans to the actor, whose cinematic repertoire blossomed greatly after leaving the world of Star Trek behind, will surely help bring newbies into the fold. And, against his previous wishes, Stewart eventually warmed up to the notion of bringing some Next Generation characters and storylines back for another go in Picard. I was involved in meetings I d never been involved in as an actor before, Stewart, who had the added responsibility of co-executive producer on the series, explained. I could contribute. And I began, increasingly, to feel my colleagues from Next Generation, we need to see them. They, too, can reflect how the times have changed. I think it was the right thing to do. And I hope, with time, we are able to see more. To keep track, four familiar faces will be joining Jean-Luc Picard on this new adventure. Brent Spiner is reprising his role as android Commander Data. Marina Sirtis is returning, alongside Jonathan Frakes — who, once again, steps behind the camera to direct — as Deanna Troi and William Riker, respectively. Star Trek: Voyager s Jeri Ryan and Star Trek: The Next Generation s Jonathan Del Arco will be bringing their beloved Borg characters, Seven of Nine and Hugh, to this new tale, as well.(Photo by James Dimmock/CBS)Thematically, Star Trek has always operated best when it s held a mirror up to society to show us what works and what needs fixing. The first interracial kiss on television happened in the original series, between Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) and Uhura (Nichelle Nichols). Star Trek has always been a series based on the ideas of inclusion and exclusion while digging into the evolving question: what is humanity? These are some of the ways Roddenberry s concept has thrived for over the past five decades. And that s a trend that continues in Star Trek: Picard. This was one of the shows that our family, as a family, would happily sit down and watch, Michelle Hurd explained. When I got this job, that s the first thing I remembered: sitting with my mom and dad and my two sisters and watching the show. Not only because of Uhur,a but the fact that it was telling the stories of people who were other, the people who were pushed away. It just really brought me back to the understanding that Star Trek is more than just a show; it s a place where we can all be seen and represented and it makes me so proud to be part of it. Every Star Trek has a bridge family, and, in Picard, a rag-tag crew eventually forms. But every unit needs a leader, and Stewart discovered stepping back into his most iconic role was quite easy. He s never left me, the actor admitted during the 2020 Television Critics Association winter press tour.(Photo by James Dimmock/CBS)Jean-Luc Picard may have been gone from our screens for nearly two decades, but his return is coming at just the right time, Kurtzman said. Right now more than ever, we need great leaders. We need great leaders like Jean-Luc Picard. And we don t have them, Kurtzman added. My hope is that we will inspire people to remember that and think about that deeply. And the next generation that is now much more vocal about many of the problems they ve been left with, because of previous generations, will look to something like Star Trek and say it s possible. You know, maybe we won t get there in our lifetime. But maybe we can lay brick for our children s children to get there. Star Trek: Picard premieres on Thursday, January 22 on CBS All Access.

ast, except for Mads Mikkelsen, Boyd Holbrook, and Phoebe Waller-Bridge (whose 1960s-style costume was revealed online this week). The same is true for the latest star to join Indiana Jones 5 (7/29/2022), which is Antonio Banderas, whose role in the film we also know pretty much nothing about. Nevertheless, the Indy 5 cast is shaping up to be an impressive one, so here s to hoping the end result is worth the wait.Other Top Headlines1. WANDAVISION DIRECTOR TO BOLDLY GO TO STAR TREK (Photo by Michael Germana/Everett Collection)The Disney+ mini-series WandaVision (Fresh at 91%) was many things, but it began as a decade-at-a-time love letter to the sitcoms of classic television. It should perhaps not come as a surprise then that WandaVision director Matt Shakman is moving on to a movie franchise that got its start as an adaptation of a classic 1960s TV show. Matt Shakman has signed with Paramount Pictures and J.J. Abrams Bad Robot to direct their next Star Trek feature film, working from a screenplay by Lindsey Beer and Geneva Robertson-Dworet (co-writer of Captain Marvel, Tomb Raider), whose involvement makes this Star Trek the first of the franchise s films to be written by female screenwriters. The premise of this Star Trek film is still being kept secret, including whether it will feature previous Kelvin Timeline stars like Chris Pine, Simon Pegg, and Zachary Quinto. This project should also not be confused with the Star Trek to which Quentin Tarantino was once attached. In related news, Lindsey Beer is also currently filming her directorial debut, which will be a prequel to the 2019 remake of Stephen King s Pet Sematary (Rotten at 57%).2. BILL MURRAY JOINS WES ANDERSON S NEXT (Photo by ©Fox Searchlight Pictures)Although Bill Murray did not appear in director Wes Anderson s very first movie, Bottle Rocket (Certified Fresh at 85%), beginning with Rushmore, he has been in all of Anderson s films since. Two weeks ago, another of Anderson s frequent collaborators, Tilda Swinton, was the first to be announced for his untitled next film, which is described as some sort of love story possibly set in a desert landscape (which is filming in Spain). Naturally, Bill Murray has now also joined the project, although we don t know anything about his character (or, for that matter, Swinton s). Both Murray and Swinton co-star in Wes Anderson s next film, The French Dispatch (10/22/2021), which just held its world premiere at Cannes earlier this week.3. THIS WEEK IN JOHN WICK: IAN MCSHANE RETURNING FOR #4 (Photo by David Lee/©Summit Entertainment)Some movies quietly get made with relatively little hullabaloo about casting, while other publicity departments turn the casting process into an ongoing campaign. One movie currently filming that has been consistently making the news because of its casting is John Wick Chapter 4 , which has been covered here at least three times recently (for the castings of Rina Sawayama, Donnie Yen, and, just last week, Lance Reddick). This week, John Wick Chapter 4 made the news twice, first for Chilean stunt actor Marko Zaror (From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series), and then for Ian McShane, who will be reprising his franchise role as Winston, the proprietor of the Continental Hotel, a neutral zone where assassins can come to recuperate but must refrain from conducting any business. 4. HENRY CAVILL IS LATEST TO TAKE ON THE ROSIE PROJECT (Photo by Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection)Plenty of movie projects take years and years to get made, but generally, these loops tend to affect certain types of films (remakes, sequels, etc.) the most. One genre that seems to be making a comeback, though, is the romantic comedy (partly because Hollywood doesn t make these as much anymore). The Rosie Project is a rom-com that has been bouncing around since 2014, with people like Jennifer Lawrence, Ryan Reynolds, and Jake Gyllenhaal potentially slated to star, and directors like Richard Linklater and the team of Phil Lord and Christopher Miller were once attached. Ultimately, it appears the film will be a vehicle for Henry Cavill, whose spy movie Argylle was just our Top Story last week, as The Witcher star signed on to The Rosie Project this week. Cavill will play an an unlucky-in-love university professor who creates an elaborate questionnaire in an effort to find a wife, but the woman he falls in love with doesn t match his criteria. The Rosie Project will now be the directorial debut of its screenwriter, Steve Falk.5. MICHAEL B. JORDAN S REMAKE OF THE THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR STILL IN DEVELOPMENT (Photo by JA/Everett Collection)For better or worse, some movies get seem to get remade for each new generation (A Star is Born, for example). Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway starred in the original 1968 art heist romantic thriller The Thomas Crown Affair (Fresh at 72%), which was then remade in 1999 (Fresh at 70%) with Pierce Brosnan and Rene Russo. Back in 2016, we first reported that MGM had started development of a third version with Michael B. Jordan attached to produce and star, but since it s been five years, it would have been reasonable to assume the project was shelved. Instead, remaking The Thomas Crown Affair is reportedly still very much a high priority for MGM, which this week hired screenwriter Wes Tooke (Midway, Rotten at 41%) to adapt the concept for Michael B. Jordan.6. ANNA KENDRICK AND LOKI STAR ANSWER ALICE, DARLING (Photo by Jason Mendez/Everett Collection)Academy Award nominee Anna Kendrick (Up in the Air, Certified Fresh at 90%) and Wunmi Mosaku (Hunter B-15 from Loki) are now in Canada filming a psychological thriller for Lionsgate called Alice, Darling. Kendrick is playing the title character, who is behaving strangely, keeping secrets about her mercurial boyfriend (Charlie Carrick) from her two best friends (Wunmi Mosaku and Kaniehtiio Horn). Alice, Darling will be the directorial debut of Mary Nighy, the daughter of British actor Bill Nighy, Coincidentally, there is also an actress named Alice Darling, but she doesn t appear to be co-starring in Alice, Darling. Too bad.7. AMAZON S WHEEL OF TIME TO GET AGE OF LEGENDS TIE-IN TRILOGY (Photo by Tor Books)When fantasy author Robert Jordan died in 2007 at the age of 58, he left behind his popular Wheel of Time series yet unfinished, and another writer eventually finished it off. Wheel of Time is now being adapted as an Amazon Prime series to premiere later in 2021, but given exactly how big Jordan s series is, it might be unlikely that the Amazon show could ever adapt it all. With that in mind, Radar Pictures has hired screenwriter Zack Stentz (co-writer of Thor, X-Men: First Class) to adapt the screenplay of the first of a planned trilogy set during the Age of Legends as a prequel set thousands of years before Jordan s Wheel of Time series. The Age of Legends trilogy is being planned to compliment the Amazon Prime series.8. TOP GUN: MAVERICK DIRECTOR TO TAKE ON TALKING CAR CHARIOT  (Photo by ©Universal Pictures)The Fast Furious franchise has obviously become a box office juggernaut ( billion and counting, worldwide), but other attempts at adapting super fast cars to the big screen have frequently stalled. Specifically, movie versions of the TV show Knight Rider, the video game series Spy Hunter, and the toy line Hot Wheels have all been in and out of development over the last 20 years, but  none of them has been made yet. This week s news seems to promise another movie along those lines, as it s an adaptation of the indie comic book series Chariot, about a criminal who discovers a Cold War-era super spy s weaponized car, only to learn that the agent s consciousness now controls the car (hence our comparisons to Spy Hunter and Knight Rider). Warner Bros. won an auction for the rights to Chariot, with Joseph Kosinski (Oblivion, Tron: Legacy) attached to direct. Kosinski s next films will be Top Gun: Maverick (11/19/2021) and the Netflix movie Escape from Spiderhead, starring Chris Hemsworth.9. REVEALED THIS WEEK: CHADWICK BOSEMAN ALMOST STARRED IN L.A. CONFIDENTIAL SEQUEL (Photo by Marvel Studios)In addition to all of the stories that are officially announced each week, there are also things going on behind closed doors that we as the moviegoing public wouldn t normally hear about. The death last year of Chadwick Boseman has made the non-realization of one such project even more bittersweet. In an interview this week, screenwriter Brian Helgeland revealed that he and L.A. Confidential author James Ellroy had pitched Warner Bros. on a sequel that would have been set decades later in the 1970s. In addition to returning stars Russell Crowe and Guy Pearce, the sequel would have introduced a young L.A.P.D. police officer played by Chadwick Boseman (who had previously worked with Helgeland on the Jackie Robinson biopic 42, Certifed Fresh at 81%).On an Apple device? HBO and BBC have joined forces on His Dark Materials, an edgy, effects-heavy, family friendly fantasy television series. For fans of Phil Pullman s book, The Golden Compass — which this is a new adaptation of — the TV show has been a long time coming. The eight-episode first season of the series, which is set to hit HBO on November 4, stars Logan s Dafne Keen as Lyra Belacqua, James McAvoy as Lord Asriel, Ruth Wilson as Marisa Coulter, and Lin-Manuel Miranda as Lee Scoresby, in a program that is sounding more-and-more like the network s next attempt at Game of Thrones greatness.Die-hard fans of Pullman s work have been wary; after all, we ve been here before. Nicole Kidman, Daniel Craig, Sam Elliott, Eva Green, and Ian McKellan all starred in 2007 feature film The Golden Compass. The Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter movies brought in big money for New Line and its parent company Warner Bros. Pictures, and The Golden Compass might have been the next big thing, but the movie was stripped of the book s critical religious themes, replacing narrative complexities with happier elements. The film bombed big time, leading the studio to scrap its sequel plans. This brings us back to His Dark Materials, produced in part with another Time Warner media property, HBO. The eight-episode first season of the fantasy series aims to tap back into the lush world Pullman originally imagined in 1995. Will the show translate Pullman s fantastical homage to John Milton s Paradise Lost, while maintaining the dark undertones that were lost in the movie? From its lush effects and talking animals to the good-vs-evil, classist elements of the story, there s a lot to unpack. Will the program resonate with today s audiences? Here s what the critics are saying about season 1 of HBO s His Dark Materials.(Photo by HBO)HOW DOES IT COMPARE TO THE BOOK?Fans of the books will be glad to know that care has been taken to get it right this time. From what I’ve seen so far, nothing of consequence has been left out. — Robert Lloyd, The Los Angeles TimesDespite the rich complexities of the novel’s world of daemons, power-hungry players and warring faiths, HBO’s “His Dark Materials” feels like it could have been plucked from most any other fantasy epic out there. — Caroline Framke, VarietyNational Treasure screenwriter (and screenwriting national treasure) Jack Thorne has pulled off the improbable if not quite the impossible, delivering an engaging and sumptuous take on Pullman’s world that cleaves impressively close to the books while still making a few tweaks for the visual medium. — Huw Fullerton, Radio TimesDOES THE ENSEMBLE CAST DELIVER?(Photo by HBO)Keen is spellbinding. She is modern enough not to alienate the younger audience members but also possesses a sort of old-fashioned pluck that helps to propel the action. Among the adult cast, James McAvoy is commanding as Asriel, while Ruth Wilson’s Mrs. Coulter is like an irresistibly enigmatic screen siren from a Forties film noir. — Ben Lawrence, Daily TelegraphDafne Keen, recognisable from 2017 X-Men film Logan, plays main character Lyra with willfulness and spark. James McAvoy is terrific as her Byronic uncle Lord Asriel, while you’d call Ruth Wilson a revelation as the glamorous and mysterious Mrs Coulter if she weren’t always this watchable. — Louisa Mellor, Den of GeekOnly Lin-Manuel Miranda, as “aeronaut for hire” Lee Scoresby, hits a false note. The actor wears his fedora at a determinedly rakish tilt, but his swagger (and his intermittent Southern drawl) are more playacting than performance. — Kristen Baldwin, EW(Photo by HBO)HOW ARE THE VISUAL EFFECTS?While we’re on the subject of the way things look, everything from the tourist-board realism of the canals, via the cobbled streets inhabited by the Gyptians (a group of water travellers whose children are going missing), up to the skyline of Oxford, are sumptuous examples of imagination manifested. — Matt Rodgers, Flickering MythAll the lavish CGI has other limitations. The more ambitious it gets, the more studio-bound the acting becomes. You can t help remembering that the stars are performing in front of green screens, talking to imaginary animals and running through unseen buildings. — Christopher Stevens, Daily Mail(Photo by HBO)SO, IS THIS THE NEXT GAME OF THRONES?This is an ambitious series that tackles some lofty themes about power and faith while still giving us spectacular special effects and thrilling action sequences. In short, this is HBO s first series that has the scale of Game of Thrones but is accessible for all ages. — Alex Maidy, JoBlo s Movie EmporiumHis Dark Materials is very much a fantasy series made in the aftermath of Game of Thrones, with the story’s more fantastical elements given as much weight as the conspiratorial mysteries and complicated character dynamics. — Hoi-Tran-Bui, SlashFilmHis Dark Materials season 1 premieres on Monday, November  4 on HBO.

After one of the greatest television reveals in the history of the small screen, Jimmi Simpson (a.k.a. William or the Young Man in Black from Westworld) didn t waste any time searching for his next project. After a hard-fought audition, the 20-year acting veteran was cast as the lead in the new Epix drama Perpetual Grace, LTD alongside Sir Ben Kingsley. The House of Cards alum quickly plunged himself into the world of grifters and shady characters for this neo-noir thriller, a series with a twisty plot that will make Twin Peaks fans feel right at home. A strangely entertaining tale about robbing a fraud church that would make David Lynch proud, Perpetual Grace, LTD is built for cult-classic appreciation. Only four episodes into this season and we don t know what s in store for James (Simpson) and Pastor Byron Brown (Kingsley), but the first half already has us itching with anticipation.Just hours before he screened the latest episode at the ATX Television Film Festival in early June, Simpson spoke with Rotten Tomatoes about working with Kingsley, what he s streaming, and a graphic television program he finds surprisingly soothing. What’s appointment viewing for you?(Photo by John P. Johnson/HBO)Jimmi Simpson: Do shows even come out every week any more?Jacqueline Coley for Rotten Tomatoes: Well, You were on one last year.[Laughs] No, you re right, if we were not on hiatus, yes I would definitely say Westworld. It s wonderful for that kind of Dickensian quality: here s a little bit and you ll wait, and you ll enjoy waiting. What’s on your streaming queue?PEN15. They re about 5 to 10 years after my time. I was, like, in college when they talking about these things, the preemptive and internet chat stuff, but it s the application of everything that we learned, growing up now as 30-year-olds. They re 30, and having the emotional intelligence and the verbal articulation to share the lessons that we all couldn t process at that time. It just feels like it brings the human growth experience, the adolescence experience, the confusion, into this world where we understand why we do all these things, we understand the trouble we got into, and why we made the bad calls we made, and what actually built who we are as adults. And then it s f ing hilarious. I think it resonates on a sociological level in a way that no comedy show has ever to me. I was raised on Wonder Years, so that s the closest show to this, but that s still an adult tale. It s a middle-aged person describing that experience and we re looking at it from a middle-aged point of view. Whereas, these two women are attacking it from the perspective of a 30-year-old, just with the knowledge and the wisdom of a 13-year-old. I can t believe how good it is. I can t believe how on point both of their performances are. Each time I m just stunned. They bring me to tears about every episode, and then I m laughing my ass off. It s just so good and they call out what needs to be called out, and they let themselves make all those mistakes, so that should win all the awards.  I think it should get a Nobel Peace Prize.(Photo by Liam Daniel/HBO)Anything else?Absolutely: Chernobyl.Great show, but kinda depressing. Well, it s only depressing if we let it keep happening.  I presume that filmmaker knew what he was doing when he was saying, Look at the mistakes they made, and let s try to avoid that, the misinformation. If you look at the United States of America right now and the daily misinformation from our commander-in-chief, he says it to protect his little ego, and he does it at the expense of human lives. In Chernobyl all they re doing is protecting their ego, the ego of the state, the collective ego. But isn t a person s ego even more nefarious, even more worthless to go into such terrible pitches of ill truth? It s stunning to me. We all want to learn lessons, we all want to be better, but it s also a world where everyone wants to watch shows and be really entertained. So how do you achieve both? How do you get your message across, and make one of the most clearly articulate and beautiful, visual stories on TV right now? Every time he sets the camera or doesn t set the camera, every push in, every performance is captivating. It s film at its best, I think, because I just love biography, so to give audiences all of this pertinent information and all these warning signs under the guise of “Holy f this is so entertaining!” That s hard to do man. And so I just clap my ass off for that show. What’s on your DVR?Believe it or not, I unwind to the Forensic Files. I discovered because my wife found it. She s from the U.K., so she s always looking for the next true crime thing that America has. And she found these half-hour investigations into awful crimes, and how forensics got to the bottom of it. At first I was like, oh my God! But with the climate of the world, with so much sadness and so much devastation and no checks and balances, we don t have justice. We have racism at its highest since the civil rights movement. So these little half-hour episodes, they re horrific crimes, but each one is foiled. Each time the bad guy s gotten, and you know at the end of it you re going to see the bad guy thrown in jail. So despite how awful it is you can say, Thank God, evil monsters do go to jail in the end.”  They ll get them every time! That feeling is calming to me. I m less of the superheroes guy. That flight of fancy doesn t quite suit me. I m like, that s not happening! That s not real. But when we go over to Forensic Files, justice pans out. Without a cape. What’s coming soon that you can’t wait for?I don t know if it s soon, but Pen15 season 2.

Best-Reviewed New Series 2020Lucky are the 2020 TV series that finished production before the pandemic shutdowns began; a hellscape of frustrating delays were in store for those that hadn’t. Fortunately, quality didn’t suffer in this strange and challenging television atmosphere. Proof lies in the Golden Tomato Award winner and finalists of our Best-Reviewed New Series category; eight of the 10 series are Certified Fresh at 96% and above on the Tomatometer, starting with our winner, HBO’s I May Destroy You from star and creator Michaela Coel. The top five series are diverse women’s stories: Coel’s devastating tale of assault, the historical lessons of Mrs. America, Netflix’s chess winner The Queen’s Gambit, the friendship and fun of The Baby-Sitters Club, and lesbian love story Feel Good. The order of the rank below reflects the Adjusted Score as of December 31, 2020. The actor has starred in Jim Jarmusch s The Dead Don t Die, is getting plenty of Oscar buzz for his currently-in-theaters Marriage Story, and he will end the year in his last outing – we presume – as Kylo Ren in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. This week he headlines The Report, Amazon Studios critically acclaimed and Certified Fresh new drama about the creation of the Senate Intelligence Committee s almost-7,000–page report into the CIA s use of torture following the 9/11 attacks. Driver plays senate staffer Daniel Jones in the film alongside Annette Bening as Senator Dianne Feinstein, and Jon Hamm. Rotten Tomatoes Jacqueline Coley spoke to Driver, Bening, Hamm, Jones himself, and writer-director Scott Z. 亚博官方网站APP下载 Chris Evans took a break from his Marvel superhero duties in 2013 to star in Bong Joon-ho s sci-fi movie Snowpiercer. Based on the 1982 French graphic novel Le Transperceneige, the story followed a high-speed, non-stop bullet train filled with the final remnants of the human race as a second Ice Age turned the planet into an unlivable, post-climate change wasteland. The inhabitants on-board the locomotive represent a sampling of a society that was all but wiped out. The overcrowded back-end of the train is where the underprivileged exist, forced to follow the various orders handed down by militia, while they eat gelatinous blocks of protein for every meal. Contrasting this gritty despair is that of the passengers residing in the front of the train. Here, it s like a high-class vacation every day, where the elite are pampered with all sorts of perks like sushi, pedicures, and lavish nighttime parties.Bong s film was widely celebrated, so it wasn t too surprising when it was announced two years later that a Snowpiercer TV series was in development. A pilot was ordered in 2016, and TNT ordered the series in 2018.It s been four years since the news hit, though. During that time, the project has been hit with a flurry of setbacks. Behind-the-scenes creative disputes and the shuffling of the project — it was moved from TNT to TBS, and then back again — has kept the series stuck in development hell. After all this time, it is looking like the small-screen adaptation of this futuristic dystopian tale is finally on a hopeful trajectory. So let s get into the nitty-gritty and explore everything we know about the upcoming Snowpiercer TV series.A STELLAR CAST IS ON BOARD(Photo by Monica Burns/Turner)For such a high-concept TV series, one would expect a collection of top-notch actors to come along for the ride, and the ensemble brought together for the TNT series is pretty impressive. After 19 years, Academy Award-winner Jennifer Connelly (Alita: Battle Angel) returns to television — anyone remember the short-lived procedural, The $treet? — to play first-class passenger and head of hospitality Melanie Cavill. Tony Award–winner Daveed Diggs, who is best known for his roles in the musical Hamilton and his feature writing debut Blindspotting, plays former police detective Layton Well, a man who lives in squalor in the back of the train.Other actors featured in the show s cast include Mickey Sumner (American Made), Tony Award-winner Lena Hall (Hedwig and the Angry Inch), Annalise Basso (Slender Man), Steven Ogg (The Walking Dead), and Timothy V. Murphy (Sons of Anarchy).EXPECT MORE CLASS STRUGGLES, SOCIAL POLITICS, AND SOME EPIC WORLD-BUILDING(Photo by TNT)In the new series, the constantly-moving, self-sustaining train that is known to its inhabitants as the Rattling Ark will still be there. But while we re getting the futuristic visuals of this post-apocalyptic version of Noah s Ark — along with the similar themes of class, race, and social politics featured in the graphic novel and movie — the mechanics of the Snowpiercer world will be expanded. As a fan of the film and reading the scripts, it broadens the world exponentially. And that s one of the advantages of TV: you have time, series star Diggs previously told IGN. So the politics that are hinted at in the film are explored in much more depth, and the mechanism of the train [is explored further] — just the little things that create a world, world specificity. During a panel at the 2017 Television Critics Association press tour, TNT boss Kevin Reilly teased a central mystery that would be the throughline in season 1, saying it would focus on characters stuck together in an intense environment in a game of survival. Diggs further touched on the class commentary featured in the series at the program s NYCC panel.“Anyone who’s from a marginalized community knows there’s a kind of togetherness that comes out of necessity, and a feeling of family and lack of lying from having to band together,” Diggs said. “So there are some good things, but no amenities. It’s pretty bleak; it’s hard to raise children with no resources. They’re dealing with truly extreme circumstances, so the idea that there’s something to fight for is pretty intense.”A SHOWRUNNER SHAKE-UP SLOWED EVERYTHING DOWN (Photo by Michael Kovac/Getty Images)A year after TNT ordered Snowpiercer to series, Josh Friedman (War of the Worlds) was brought on to run the show. Just weeks later, after production officially began, Friedman was replaced by Orphan Black co-creator Graeme Manson (pictu
