O Brien and Muschietti were joined on stage by the second IT half s adult cast: Jessica Chastain (Beverly Marsh), Bill Hader (Richie Tozier), James McAvoy (Bill Denbrough), Andy Bean (Stanley Uris), Isaiah Mustafa (Mike Hanlon), James Ransone (Eddie Kaspbrak), and Jay Ryan (Ben Hanscom). (Pennywise the Clown, AKA Bill Skarsgård, was himself conspicuously absent.)Conan O Brien said that he landed the gig hosting the event because of how much he resembles Pennywise the Clown, in that he s pale and frightens children. To really drive that home, everyone who attended the #ScareDiego event this year received a Funko Pop! of Conan O Brien as Pennywise.@SD_Comic_Con just fyi #ScareDiego gave out the Pennywise Conan pops to all attendees! pic.twitter.com/kYM9qiC8dY Josh (@SuperFistBump) July 18, 2019In addition to the panel interview with Muschietti and the cast, ScareDiego 2019 also featured three exclusive (until September 6, anyway) sneak peaks at scenes from It Chapter Two, plus the full trailer ahead of its debut online Thursday. The first scene shows the reunion of the Losers Club at a Chinese restaurant as the return of Pennywise 27 years later brings them together again to finish what they started back in the late 1980s.The second scene focused on James McAvoy s Bill character, who follows a young boy through a carnival funhouse (complete with trick mirrors), in what will actually be the second such sequence in 2019 after Lupita Nyong o and her younger self both went through something similar in Jordan Peele s Us. One has to wonder if Joaquin Phoenix s Joker (10/4/2019) might end up in a funhouse at some point as well (considering one was central to the classic Joker story, The Killing Joke). (Photo by Warner Bros. Pictures)Lastly, the third scene previewed at ScareDiego was the one that has Stephen King fans talking the most, as it s a departure from the events in King s original novel. The adult Losers return to the run-down old house on Niebolt Street, leading to a frightening scene that people on Twitter frequently compared to John Carpenter s The Thing. For now, most fans will only be able to read about those three scenes, but you can now watch the full It Chapter Two trailer, which plays out with lots of quick glimpses at various scares and scenes of ill ease. The centerpiece is the aforementioned carnival sequence, and around the 2:04 mark, we see Chastain covered in blood. Referring to that scene, Chastain called It Chapter Two Carrie on steroids, saying that they used 4,500 gallons of fake blood, most of it on her. Her reaction? It s rad. (Photo by Warner Bros. Pictures)Since ScareDiego is a horror event, the panel touched upon subject quite a bit. Bill Hader said that acting scared can be very difficult for him because his natural reaction when frightened is to smile, which doesn t sell horror as well. Hader also recounted a time when he was Facetiming with his kids from the set of the film and Bill Skarsgard popped up over his shoulder in his full Pennywise costume to freak the kids out. Jessica Chastain revealed that her mom showed her The Exorcist when she was just 7, and James McAvoy described a nightmare he had of Pennywise stroking his hair, saying, Time to wake up, James. The panel interview also featured a few funny revelations, too. When Andy Bean talked to Wyatt Olef, who played the younger version of his character, Stanley Uris, Wyatt told him, I wanted Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Director Andy Muschietti and his frequent collaborator Jessica Chastain ended the panel by showing off their singing tradition from the start of each shoot, singing a bit of the 1926 Tinpan Alley classic Tonight, You Belong to Me by Billy Rose and composer Lee David.(Photo by Warner Bros. Pictures)As for what the future might have in store for us, Muschietti revealed that he d also love to remake the 1981 classic werewolf film (and franchise starter) The Howling. Given how much Muschietti appears to enjoy casting and working with Jessica Chastain (she also starred in his Mama), one has to wonder if perhaps she could star in The Howling as the news journalist who ends the movie with an iconic reveal. The saga of the Losers Club and their 27-year-old fight with Pennywise the killer clown will conclude when It Chapter Two creeps back into theaters on September 6, 2019.
Though the requisite French fashion designer–diva in Emily In Paris might consider the show s title basic, Americans might instead call it forthright. The name of the new Netflix rom-com starring Lily Collins tells you exactly what you re going to get: the story of a successful young American and her fabulous new life in Paris. From Sex and the City and Younger creator Darren Star, the show follows Collins Emily, a twentysomething marketing manager who gets a promotion and moves to the City of Lights to run social media for a luxury French marketing agency. Culture clashes abound, both in the office and in her personal life. While she quickly makes friends in her French chef neighbor (Lucas Bravo), Chinese ex-pat Mindy (Ashley Park), and stylish Parisian Camille (Camille Razat), Emily finds it much harder to fit in at work, where her all-American effervescence and inability to speak French aren t exactly appreciated.(Photo by Carole Bethuel/Netflix)The series, which was originally commissioned for Paramount Network, but moved to Netflix after some corporate shuffling, is Star s first streaming series. I love the idea that people can binge this show, and they re not waiting for next week and next week and next week, Star told Rotten Tomatoes over Zoom ahead of the Emily In Paris premiere. Before you grab some champagne and chocolate and settle in for a binge, read on to find out what else you need to know about the fizzy rom-com.1. Living In Paris(Photo by Carole Bethuel/Netflix)The first thing to know about the series, which was filmed in Paris late last summer and fall, is that living the Parisian life is just as dreamy as you d expect. I wish for jealousy s sake that I could say it wasn t the best time ever, Park told Rotten Tomatoes, but that just wasn t the case: I couldn t have had more fun if I tried. Days off included strolling along the Seine, trying new restaurants, and sipping plenty of wine. Park got an apartment in the historic 4th arrondissement neighborhood of the Marais, and it was exactly what Emily is going through, but I was living it in real time, Park said. There is a wine bar that I took almost everyone who visited me that had the best orange wine and was about the size of this little living room — it s the best. Lucas Bravo and Camille Razat, they would take me out to their favorite French spots, she said.Of course, moving anywhere new is a difficult and isolating experience, and it takes Emily a little while to feel comfortable. Then there s the fact that although the historic buildings in Paris are beautiful, they do have some downsides; for one, the frequent need of repair.Collins experienced the personality of the city s aging infrastructure first hand. Though she said she had a similarly blissful time exploring Paris — her first time in the city for more than a handful of days — she also had some less-than-idyllic experiences like her character. I had a lot of meta experiences as Lily and Emily, like, where my hot water didn t work for two weeks, or my heating stopped working or just funny things where I was like, OK, this is Lily, but it s also very Emily, Collins said.2. Working in Paris(Photo by Carole Bethuel/Netflix)Like all of Star s series, there s a fantasy element at work in this show. First of all, Emily is described as a marketing executive at the ripe old age of not-even-30, which is a bit of an exaggeration even if she was a wunderkind who worked her way up the corporate ladder quickly. But even so, the culture clash at her new company is very extreme, with the buttoned-up French staff not at all receptive to Emily s over-eager, bubbly personality and ask for forgiveness, not permission work style.Emily is a fish out of water careening forward without first assessing how her new colleagues operate (a rookie mistake). It s an interesting situation for Emily because she was sent there last minute, Collins explained. So the office is expecting someone older who speaks French, and she arrives and she s someone younger who doesn t understand the language at all. So right away, it s like, Oh, wait, this is not gonna work. Emily is very passionate, loves her work, and is very articulate, and quite loud and obvious. And so when she comes bustling in to prove herself right away, it can seem like a lot, Collins said. Her youthful boldness, her youthful passion, at the beginning is like a full train rolling, going straight ahead 20 miles an hour too fast. 3. Romance in Paris(Photo by Stephanie Branchu/Netflix)Paris is also called the City of Love for a reason — it is tres romantic, especially the version of Paris captured by this breezy 30-minute show. Emily has a boyfriend back home, a fancy client who s extremely into her, and sizzling chemistry with neighbor Gabriel, who s also a chef at the bistro downstairs from their apartments. But above all, Collins said, I think this is a romantic comedy where mostly Emily s trying to find love within herself. The City of Love is teaching her so much about finding love within herself, and then obviously with these people that she s meeting. It shouldn t be too much of a spoiler to tease that perhaps something explosive will happen between Emily and her hot chef neighbor — come on, you ve seen a romantic comedy before, right? The situation is very complicated on both ends, Bravo said, but Gabriel ultimately can t resist the sparks between them. He s wearing that charming self-confidence mask, but he s really lost, the Nice-born actor said. And when Emily comes around, and at his doorstep — he is not looking for her, she really steps into his life — he sees this very curious character; he sees an opportunity. It s like, OK, what I m feeling right now, I need to experience it because I felt kind of dead all this time and lost, and I feel something right now so I need to experience it. 4. Cooking (and Eating) in Paris(Photo by Roger Do Minh/Netflix)While Park is Tony-nominated for her work in Broadway s Mean Girls musical and Collins has been a big-screen star for years, American audiences won t be as familiar with Bravo. The actor was born in the South of France but lived all across Europe as the son of a professional soccer player, settling in Paris to finish his studies. After a five-year stint in Los Angeles, he moved back to Paris, where he s worked in TV and film for the past few years. As someone who moved around a lot as a kid, Bravo said he s comfortable in all sorts of situations, and that includes his professional life. But his role as a chef isn t necessarily that big of a stretch, since he s got his own skills in the kitchen from his stint working as a chef. I was bartending, and at some point, I was like, I don t think I can learn anything more about bartending. So I asked the chef, because the sous chef just left, I asked him if I could step in and he said yes, Bravo said. And so I started learning and cooking the little plates at first and then he made me part of the bigger process. And the kitchen was open so the customers could see us, and I was totally overplaying it. Sometimes the omelet didn t have to jump so high, but I would just [do it] just for the sake of it. I discovered what it is to be a chef and the food was actually good! 5. Season 2 in ParisEmily and Gabriel s burgeoning relationship, of course, gets complicated as the season progresses, leaving lots of potential storylines should the series get picked up for a second season. While Netflix typically takes a month or two to decide whether to renew a show, Star said that he has ideas ready should they get the green light. So although he hasn t formally started working on a second season, there s a lot of roads to take. So that s the idea: to have a lot of possibilities. Collins is also excited about further exploring that Emily-Gabriel dynamic and said: Hopefully we get to go to a season 2, because we can kind of maximize on that since we are left with a cliffhanger in the last episode, we don t know how it ends yet. This week s Ketchup brings you another 10 headlines from the world of film development news (the stories about what movies Hollywood is working on for you next), covering new projects for Michael Fassbender, Joaquin Phoenix, and Margot Robbie. This WEEK S TOP STORYM. NIGHT SHYALAMAN WORKING ON MYSTERIOUS MOVIES FOR 2021 AND 2023 (Photo by Jessica Kourkounis / © Universal)On top of everything else in M. Night Shyalaman s Split (Certified Fresh at 77%), the most memorable scene in the movie may have come at the end when it was revealed that it was secretly set in the same world as Shyamalan s Unbreakable (Fresh at 70%), which, of course, subsequently led to this year s Glass (Rotten at 37%). Regardless of how Glass itself was received, the box office success of these movies is a reminder that, like Quentin Tarantino, Shyamalan remains one of the few directors whose name carries marquee value. So, it s little surprise that this week, Universal Pictures moved quickly to schedule two mystery projects from M. Night Shyamalan for release on February 26, 2021 and February 17, 2023. The year 2023 is relatively unclaimed so far, but that date in early 2021 is the week before the reboots of Mortal Kombat and Masters of the Universe, both of which are staked out on March 5, 2021. Although no details are given for Shyamalan s new projects, they are described as being original movies. One possibility has been suggested by Collider, which is that these movies could be a longer story split in two. M. Night Shyamalan has now directed three movies within a superhero framework. What genre might he take on next?Other Top Headlines1. FIRST DETAILS ABOUT JOAQUIN PHOENIX S NEXT FILM AFTER JOKER (Photo by Warner Bros.)Joker (currently Fresh at 75%) doesn t come out for another two weeks, but its future seems pretty bright at this point, following the film s top prize win at the Venice Film Festival and with opening weekend box office predictions in the million range. Joaquin Phoenix will probably emerge from all of this with an even more prospects for major studio prestige films, but this week he signed on to work with an acclaimed independent director first. Joaquin Phoenix s next film after Joker will be an untitled independent drama with a secret premise from writer-director Mike Mills. This will be Mills fourth film following Thumbsucker, Beginners (which gave Christopher Plummer his Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor), and 2017 s 20th Century Women (for which Mills received a Best Original Screenplay Academy Award nomination).2. MICHAEL FASSBENDER JOINS TAIKA WAITITI S NEXT GOAL WINS(Photo by Abbot Genser/TM and ©Copyright Fox Searchlight Pictures)With dozens of Marvel Cinematic Universe movies and various Marvel movies from both Fox and Sony, it s nearly inevitable nowadays that actors and directors with Marvel credentials will end up working together on other projects. Taika Waititi, for example, is fitting two non-Marvel movies in between Thor: Ragnarok and Thor: Love and Thunder (11/5/2021). The first of those two is Jojo Rabbit (currently Fresh at 75%), in which Taika Waititi plays a ridiculous daydream version of Adolf Hitler, and the second will be a soccer underdog true story drama called Next Goal Wins. This week, Michael Fassbender, whose run as Marvel s Magneto finished this year with Dark Phoenix, signed on to star in Next Goal Wins as soccer coach Thomas Rongen, who in 2011 became coach of the American Samoan team in their effort to qualify for the World Cup. Waititi reportedly is now casting actors of Fa afafine heritage to play the American Samoan soccer players. Next Goal Wins is also based upon the 2014 documentary of the same title, which won several awards, including Best Documentary Feature at the British Independent Film Awards in 2014.3. THIS WEEK IN MARGOT ROBBIE: FOOLS DAY AND COMPETITION FOR BARBIE(Photo by Andrew Cooper / © Columbia Pictures)In addition to appearing in Quentin Tarantino s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (Certified Fresh at 85%) and starring in upcoming films Bombshell (12/20/2019) and Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn (2/7/2020), Margot Robbie is staying super busy in her role as producer. It was just last week that we learned Robbie is producing a Tank Girl reboot, but this week, we found out she will also executive produce (and co-star in a supporting role) a feature-length adaptation of a comedy short film called Fools Day (which you can watch on YouTube right here), about a class of 4th graders who accidentally kill their teacher (Margot Robbie) while playing an April Fools Day prank. Cody Blue Snider, who wrote and directed the original short film, will also co-write and direct Fools Day as her feature film debut. Robbie is also attached to star in the long-in-development Barbie movie (5/8/2020), and this week, that project got some indirect competition in the form of Dream Doll, a biopic about Barbie creator Ruth Handler, which will be co-produced by Rita Wilson.4. BOB ODENKIRK JOINS NEW THRILLER FROM JOHN WICK WRITER (Photo by Michele K. Short/AMC/Sony Pictures Television)While many of his contemporaries became big stars much earlier, the career of Bob Odenkirk has been more of a slow burn since the 1980s, although his status has definitely grown with the success of Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul (all four seasons are Certified Fresh at 97% or higher), in which he stars. Above-title billing might be just around the corner for Bob Odenkirk with the news this week that the previously mysterious Untitled Universal Event Film scheduled for August 14, 2020 will be a revenge thriller called Nobody, starring Bob Odenkirk. Screenwriter Derek Kolstad, who wrote John Wick and John Wick: Chapter Two (and co-wrote the third film), is the mastermind behind Nobody, which is described as as a summer thriller in which Odenkirk will play a a suburban dad, overlooked husband, and all-around nobody [with] a long-surpressed rage that explodes after two thieves break into his house, propelling him on a brutal path that will uncover dark secrets he fought to leave behind. (So, basically, Nobody sounds like an adult Home Alone through the lens of John Wick, Falling Down, and Straw Dogs?)5. DIRECTOR LEE DANIELS NEXT HISTORICAL DRAMA: THE UNITED STATES VS BILLIE HOLIDAY (Photo by Jason Smith/Everett Collection)This year marks 47 years since the 1972 biopic Lady Sings the Blues (starring Diana Ross as jazz singer Billie Holiday) was released and eventually received five Academy Award nominations. It s been six years now since director Lee Daniels produced and directed Lee Daniels The Butler (Fresh at 72%), but he s now getting ready for his next film, which will be called The United States vs Billie Holiday. Instead of a full biopic, the drama will focus on a drug sting orchestrated by the Federal Department of Narcotics led by an agent with whom Billie Holiday had a tumultous affair. Singer-songwriter Andra Day has been attached to star in The United States vs Billie Holliday for a while now, and this week, we learned that she will be joined by Trevante Rhodes (Moonlight), Garrett Hedlund (Mudbound), Natasha Lyonne (Russian Doll), and Da Vine Joy Randolph (of Netflix s upcoming Dolemite is My Name). The United States vs Billie Holiday is reportedly inspired by the 2015 bestselling book Chasing the Scream: The First and Last Days of the War on Drugs by Johann Hari.6. FUNKO POP! VINYL FIGURES GET AN ANIMATED FILM(Photo by Bloomberg/Getty Images)In 2014, Warner Animation had a surprise success with The LEGO Movie (Certified Fresh at 96%), which earned over 9 million worldwide, even if the subsequent sequels didn t do quite as well. Part of the formula behind the success of The LEGO Movie was that, like the toys it was based upon, the film was able to borrow characters from franchises like DC Comics, Lord of the Rings, and Star Wars. Another popular franchise that is built largely upon the popularity of other pop culture items is Funko s Pop! vinyl figures, and like LEGO before them, the Funko Pop! figures are also now getting their own movie from Warner Animation. As with LEGO, Warner Bros. and Funko have a long history of licensing brands like Batman and Harry Potter, and the Funko Pop! movie is expected to draw heavily from those in-house properties. It will be a while before we get a release date for the Funko Pop! movie, but in the meantime, future Warner Animation movies will include Scoob (5/5/2020), Tom Jerry (4/16/2021), and Space Jam 2 (7/16/2021).7. WWE PARTNERING ON MONSTER WRESTLING ANIMATED MOVIE RUMBLE FOR 2020 (Photo by Glen Wilson /© Netflix)Much like the Bob Odenkirk movie above, until this week, Paramount Animation also had an untitled film scheduled for next summer on July 31, 2020. We can now report that the movie will be called Rumble, and that it will be a joint project with WWE Studios (Fighting with My Family). Rumble will be set in a world where monster wrestling is a global sport and monsters are superstar athletes, with a voice cast that includes Will Arnett (Batman from The LEGO Batman Movie), Terry Crews (TV s Brooklyn Nine-Nine), Tony Danza, and WWE wrestling stars like Becky Lynch and Roman Reigns. Other Paramount Animation movies scheduled for 2020 include Sonic the Hedgehog (2/14/2020), The SpongeBob Movie: It s a Wonderful Sponge (5/22/2020), and Clifford the Big Red Dog (11/13/2020). In related news, this week Paramount Animation also unveiled their new Star Skipper opening animation that will appear before these 2020 movies.8. THIS WEEK IN REMAKES: THE CRAFT, HOUSE PARTY, AND SET IT OFF Even if you set aside comic book movies and various big budget franchises like Disney, Fast Furious, James Bond, and Star Wars, the hunt for original movies each year is still made difficult by the abundance of remakes, and there s no end in sight. To illustrate the point, this week s headlines included remakes of The Craft, House Party, and Set It Off. First up, the cast for The Craft was announced, with Gideon Adlon, Lovie Simone, and Zoey Luna joining the previously announced Cailee Spaeny (Bad Times at the El Royale). Then, the House Party remake announced it will now be directed by Calmatic, the director of the video behind the hit country/rap song Old Town Road by Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus. That movie has been in the mix for a while now, as it s one of the projects that LeBron James is producing, along with Space Jam 2 (7/16/2021). Finally, the 1996 heist movie Set It Off is also getting remade, which Issa Rae (Insecure) is now developing at New Line Cinema, with Issa Rae likely to take one of the starring roles.9. THE SOCIAL MEDIA WHIRLWIND AROUND THE PRINCESS BRIDE REMAKE (Photo by TM and Copyright © 20th Century Fox Film Corp. All rights reserved)Every once in a while, we get a cautionary tale about the power of social media, frequently at the expense of old school figures who lack the foresight to realize how badly their words can be blown out of proportion. Let s start with this Variety profile of longtime TV producer Norman Lear, who also went on to produce movies like The Princess Bride and Fried Green Tomatoes. In that piece, there are some quotes from Sony Pictures Entertainment CEO Tony Vinciquerra, including this one: We have so many people coming to us saying, We want to remake this show or that show very famous people whose names I won t use, but they want to redo The Princess Bride.' And that right there was enough to explode online, as people took to their phones and computers to voice their disapproval of the mere thought of remaking the beloved 1987 fantasy comedy. Those expressing said disapproval included Jamie Lee Curtis and the original film s star Cary Elwes, who simply said, There s a shortage of perfect movies in this world. It would be a pity to damage this one. The bottom line: there are people in Hollywood who think The Princess Bride should be remade, and those people should be ashamed of themselves.Like this? This week s Ketchup brings you more headlines from the world of film development news, covering such titles as Blade, The Marvels, Red Sonja, and Superman. This WEEK S TOP STORYNEW DETAILS EMERGE ABOUT WB S NEXT SUPERMAN(Photo by ©Warner Bros. courtesy Everett Collection)Three months ago, we learned that Warner Bros. had hired award-winning novelist and comics writer Ta-Nehisi Coates to start work on what was expected to be a Black Superman movie. This week, new details emerged about the studio s plans, including their goal of hiring a director of color for the job. Warner Bros. is reportedly working from a short list that includes Barry Jenkins (Moonlight), Steven Caple Jr. (Creed II), J.D. Dillard (Sleight), Regina King (One Night in Miami), and Shaka King (Judas and the Black Messiah). Ta-Nehisi Coates isn t expected to finish his Superman screenplay until just before Christmas, but Warner Bros. appears to be motivated to use the rest of 2021 to gear up. That will also likely include casting their new Superman himself, and you can see some of the possible candidates in this piece. As for what Coates Superman screenplay is actually about, no villain has been revealed yet, but Superman is still expected to be Kal-El from the planet Krypton, and it might be a period piece set in the 20th century. This film is also not expected to be part of the DC Extended Universe (which includes The Flash, in which Sasha Calle will play the first Latina Supergirl), but will instead be more of a standalone film similar to Joaquin Phoenix s Joker (Fresh at 68%), or the upcoming The Batman (3/4/2022), starring Robert Pattinson.Other Top Headlines1. MARVEL S PHASE 4 TO INCLUDE THE MARVELS, BLACK PANTHER 2: WAKANDA FOREVER(Photo by Marvel Studios)As accessibility to COVID-19 vaccines promises the return of the moviegoing experience, Marvel Studios released a sizzle reel this week highlighting their upcoming films for 2021, 2022, and 2023, including what appears to be the rest of their Phase 4 roster. The video includes our first look at footage from Eternals (11/5/2021) from recent Academy Award-winning director Chloé Zhao (Nomadland) and a release date for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 (5/5/2023). Two of Marvel s upcoming sequels also received new titles, as the movies formerly called Black Panther 2 and Captain Marvel 2 are now officially titled Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (7/8/2022) and The Marvels (11/11/2022), which will see Brie Larson s Carol Danvers joined by Disney+ stars Teyonah Parris (Monica Rambeau from WandaVision) and Iman Vellani (Kamala Khan from the upcoming Ms. Marvel). The video ends with a blue 4 surrounded by a circle, which suggests the final film of Phase 4 will be Fantastic Four, although no release date is given, and we don t know any cast yet.2. MARVEL S BLADE REBOOT APPARENTLY DELAYED OUT OF PHASE 4 (Photo by ©New Line Cinema courtesy Everett Collection)At San Diego Comic-Con in 2019, Marvel Studios announced their films for Phase 4, as well as plans for Blade and Fantastic Four, which, at the time, were not expected to be included in Phase 4. This week, however, Fantastic Four seemed to be teased at the end of Marvel s new sizzle reel, while the Blade reboot starring Mahershala Ali was missing altogether. As it turned out, an explanation for this was to be found somewhat buried in The Hollywood Reporter s story this week about Warner Bros. hunt for a Superman director. Although they have very little else in common, both Blade and Superman will feature black leads, and both studios are seeking black or African American directors, which means both Marvel and Warner Bros. are working from similar shortlists of possible directors. It s for this reason that Marvel has apparently pushed the production start date of Blade from this September back almost a year to July, 2022 instead. In addition to giving Marvel more time to hire their Blade director, this delay will also allow screenwriter Stacy Osei-Kuffour (HBO s Watchmen) more time to fine-tune the Blade screenplay.3. JOJO RABBIT STAR TO PORTRAY OLYMPIC GYMNAST KERRI STRUG (Photo by Scott Green/©Bleecker Street Media)Currently 20 years old, New Zealand actress Thomasin McKenzie had a major breakout role in 2018 s Leave No Trace (Certified Fresh at 100%), which was followed one year later by Taika Waititi s Jojo Rabbit (Certified Fresh at 80%), in which she was basically the female lead (Scarlett Johansson played more of a supporting role). McKenzie has stayed pretty busy in the last two years (even with COVID-19), which includes roles in M. Night Shyamalan s Old (7/23/2021), Edgar Wright s Last Night in Soho (10/22/2021), and Jane Campion s The Power of the Dog. Actress-turned-director Olivia Wilde has also been staying busy following her directorial debut with Booksmart (Certified Fresh at 96%), as she recently wrapped Don t Worry Darling (starring Flroence Pugh, Harry Styles, and Chris Pine), and she s also developing a Sony Pictures superhero movie expected to be Spider-Woman (or something similar). Last year, just before the COVID-19 pandemic fully struck, Wilde also signed on to direct a biopic called Perfect, about 1992 and 1996 Olympic gymnast Kerri Strug, and it appears Perfect is getting closer to being Wilde s next as director. Thomasin McKenzie is now signed to star in Perfect as Strug, who is perhaps best known for participating in the vault competition despite an injured knee, which meant that she then had to be carried to the podium by her coach. Filming of Perfect is expected to start in January following the release of Don t Worry, Darling.4. TENET STAR TEAMING UP WITH ROGUE ONE DIERCTOR FOR TRUE LOVE (Photo by Melinda Sue Gordon/©Warner Bros.)As COVID-19 kept many theaters in the USA closed for at least several months, many films were delayed until 2021, and others were picked up by various streaming outlets (and still are doing so). One of the directors who didn t give up on a theatrical release (for better or worse) was Christopher Nolan, whose Tenet (Fresh at 70%) was released in theaters unlike many other Warner Bros. films, which debuted instead on HBO Max. The star of Tenet was John David Washington (BlacKkKlansman, Malcolm Marie), and this week, Washington signed on to star in the next film from another sc-fi/action director, as he will star in a new film called True Love for director Gareth Edwards (Monsters, Godzilla, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story). The premise of True Love is being kept secret, except that it s a sci-fi story set in the near future, and the title also obviously suggests a romantic element.5. AMY ADAMS TO STAR AS A SCIENTIST WHOSE WORK INSPIRED JAMES CAMERON S AVATAR (Photo by Jef Hernandez/Everett Collection)The world is still waiting for James Cameron s first Avatar sequel, which is currently scheduled for December 16, 2022, eight years after the sequel s first announced release date in 2014. As it might turn out, another movie related to Avatar could feasibly end up being released before Avatar 2. Amy Adams Bond Group Entertainment and Jake Gyllenhaal s Nine Stories production companies are teaming up for an adaptation of the memoir Finding the Mother Tree by scientist Suzanne Simard, with Amy Adams also attached to star in the film as Simard. The memoir is described as a scientific detective story about Simard s studies into the hidden fungus networks underground that trees use to communicate. The connection to Avatar comes in the form of the Tree of Souls featured in that film, which was inspired by Simard s work.6. IT DIRECTOR TEAMING UP WITH THE COUPLE BEHIND THE BIG SICK (Photo by Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection)After years of delays (it was once scheduled for release on March 23, 2018), Warner Bros. The Flash has finally started filming under director Andy Muschietti (Mama, IT, IT: Chapter Two), and at the same time, Muschietti has already started developing another future project. Muschietti and his wife Barbara are teaming up with another husband-wife duo, Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon, who co-wrote the 2017 indie comedy hit The Big Sick (Certified Fresh at 98%), based on their own experiences together. The project bringing these two couples together is an adaptation ofthe Edward Gorey illustrated book The Doubtful Guest, which tells the story of a strange penguin-like creature that drops in unexpectedly at a family manor. It s not yet clear if the film will be adapted as live action (perhaps with a tone like The Babadook), a live-action children s movie, or something else.7. KAITLYN DEVER FROM BOOKSMART LANDS ROMEO JULIET SPINOFF (Photo by Francois Duhamel/©Annapurna Pictures)In literature, there is a form of story called parallel fiction, in which characters from popular works are expanded upon in their own stories. Famous examples of this include Wicked (from The Wizard of Oz), The Mists of Avalon (from the Arthurian Legends), Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead (from Hamlet), and Alan Moore s League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (from dozens of Victorian Era works). This story involves a supporting character from William Shakespeare s Romeo Juliet getting her own movie, starring Kaitlyn Dever from Booksmart (Certified Fresh at 96%). That character will be Rosaline, who was Juliet s cousin, and at the beginning of Shakespeare s play, Romeo s romantic interest. Rosaline will be a modern, revisionist, rom-com take on the entire story (which suggests something more like 10 Things I Hate About You or Clueless), and it makes its way to production at 20th Century Studios after a long development cycle at MGM.8. OWEN WILSON S SECRET HEADQUARTERS TO BE DISCOVERED (Photo by Dee Cercone/Everett Collection)In the CW superhero series Stargirl, Luke Wilson plays a former superhero sidekick who secretly moves back to his hometown, where he has a secret base in a car garage where he keeps a 15-foot-tall robot. That particular character beat might be a coincidence, but this week, Luke s brother Owen Wilson signed with producer Jerry Bruckheimer to star in a family-friendly superhero action movie called Secret Headquarters. It s not yet known for sure who Wilson will be playing, but the premise of Secret Headquarters is about a kid who discovers the secret headquarters of the world’s most powerful superhero hidden beneath his home and must defend it with his group of friends when villains attack. From that, we can probably guess that Wilson might be the hero in question, one of the supervillains, or the kid s dad. Secret Headquarters will be directed by the team of Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman, who also directed the Netflix movie Project Power (Fresh at 61%).9. MARVEL VILLAIN HANNAH JOHN-KAMEN TO DON THE ARMOR OF RED SONJA (Photo by Ben Rothstein/©Marvel/©Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)Some movies have roads to production that are relatively easy to explain, and then there s Red Sonja. Originally created by Marvel Comics as a supporting character in Conan the Barbarian (not the movie), Red Sonja eventually got her own movie in 1985, starring Brigitte Nielsen and Arnold Schwarzenegger, except that he wasn t playing Conan the Barbarian, which remains a weird thing that happened. Fast forward to the 2000s, when director Robert Rodriguez spent several years trying to remake Red Sonja and got as far as making a poster with Rose McGowan in costume kneeling above a release year of 2009 and then that didn t happen either. Then, it also didn t happen under director Bryan Singer. Long story short, this week, Hannah John-Kamen (Ghost from Ant-Man and the Wasp) is now officially attached to star as Red Sonja for indie director Joey Soloway. We should note that the Red Sonja rights (and the Conan rights, and the Robert E. Howard stories she s loosely based on) have all exchanged hands repeatedly since the 1970s, so this Red Sonja movie is now basically its own thing, and is unlikely to have any connections to Conan (and definitely not Marvel). On an Apple device? Director James Gray s previous work includes films like The Immigrant and The Lost City of Z, so he may not be the first person who comes to mind when you think epic space drama. That said, Gray s quieter sensibilities may have worked to his benefit in his latest project, Ad Astra. Brad Pitt stars in the sci-fi mystery as an astronaut who embarks on a dangerous journey into space both to investigate an interstellar threat to Earth and to locate his missing father (Tommy Lee Jones), who undertook a similar mission decades earlier and disappeared. Critics say the film is an ambitious, beautifully photographed space adventure that balances big questions alongside more perso

Riverdale Pays Tribute to Luke Perry, Reveals Season 4 StorylinesThe opening moments of Riverdale s now-annual Hall H panel were, like the season 4 premiere, dedicated to Luke Perry. We suffered a huge, huge, huge loss, and it s something that we re going to be feeling for as long as we re lucky enough to keep making the show, creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa told the crowd before playing a tribute video to the actor, who died in March after suffering a stroke. The first episode will be a standalone hour paying tribute to both Perry and the character of Fred Andrews, and will include a special appearance by Perry s friend and former Beverly Hills, 90210 castmate Shannen Doherty. Also appearing on the show this season will be Molly Ringwald, who plays Archie s mom — and she ll be back more or less full time this season rather than introduce a mysterious, never-before-heard-from uncle or something to take over the parental role.Another special casting: Teen soap veteran Kerr Smith, a.k.a. Jack on Dawson s Creek, who will play the new principal of Riverdale High.K.J. Apa, Cole Sprouse, Lili Reinhart, Camila Mendes, and Madelaine Petsch joined Aguirre-Sacasa on stage to reveal more about the season, which will include a Halloween episode where someone will die (though not someone who was present at the panel), a member of Veronica s extended family dropping by, a battle of the bands episode, and flash-forwards to the jaw-dropping moment from the season 3 finale (with Archie, Betty, and Veronica covered in blood and burning their clothes).Supernatural Says Goodbye to Comic-ConSupernatural hit San Diego Comic-Con on Sunday for one last time after Jensen Ackles, Jared Padalecki, and Misha Collins announced earlier this year that the long-running CW series will end after its 15th season. With the end in sight, Supernatural s final Comic-Con panel brought all the feels, as both Winchester brothers teared up during their hour in Hall H. I’m really lucky because my friendships won’t go away, Padalecki said. And Sam Winchester, for me, won’t go away. He’ll be a part of me forever. Added Ackles, I’m really proud of the work that this team has done for this long. There’s a lot that goes in and it takes a lot of very talented people to give you guys the best product we can make. I’m really proud of that product. After this long on a show to truly love what we do and be proud to hang my hat on that, that’s one of the legacies I’m proud of. I put in the effort, we all did, nobody phones it in and I’m thankful you guys can appreciate that. Supernatural is the longest-running genre show on American television. That is an achievement in and of itself. The legacy the cast and crew are leaving is one people will surely celebrate for years to come. I hope in the future that this fandom continues to function as a family, said Collins as the panel came to an end. I hope that you guys continue to be a force for good and companionship in the world. You’ve been so supportive of one another and so supportive of us. We all love you guys very much. To pay the fans back for their decade and a half of loyalty, the guys surprised the fans at the San Diego Convention Center by giving away a fully restored 1967 Impala (a replica of the show’s beloved “Baby”).Mayans MC Will Welcome Some Sons of Anarchy in Season 2Be part of the club. Also of note: The network screened the first 15 minutes of the season 2 premiere, and according to reports, the episode picks up several months after the first season finale.Doctor Who — The Edge Of Time VR Game Offers Fans A First-Person View Of The TARDISThough Doctor Who sat out Comic-Con 2019, the Doctor’s presence was still felt throughout the weekend via PlayStack and Maze Theory’s Doctor Who — The Edge of Time VR game at the BBC America booth. Strapping on a headset, fans were transported to an alley reminiscent of 76 Totter’s Lane — the key location in the first ever episode of Doctor Who — where the Doctor (voiced by Jodie Whittaker) directs the user in building a device to call the TARDIS. Once it materializes, players get to fulfill the wish of every Doctor Who fan: step inside the TARDIS.The experience is quite intuitive to video game players, but as producer Kiron Ramdewar told Rotten Tomatoes, many fans were just pleased to be in a London back alley picking up different items and working with the Sonic Screwdriver.“One of the key differences in the game is that you do not play the Doctor,” he continued, comparing it to Maze Theory’s Iron Man game, which was also at Comic-Con. “We felt it was important fans had a Doctor Who experience alongside the Doctor.” Instead of playing the Doctor, the player takes on the companion role as the Time Lord, stranded at the end of time, aids the player in piloting the TARDIS through time and space to collect time crystals and repair the continuum. They will also run into familiar Doctor Who adversaries like the Daleks. And it begins with that first glimpse of the TARDIS, which allows players to experience that “it’s bigger on the inside” moment for themselves; a truly palpable sensation we experienced in the demo. Scanned from the actual TARDIS console room set, the entire locale is fully interactive — including the biscuit dispenser.Doctor Who — The Edge of Time comes to Playstation VR, Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, and Vive Cosmos in September.
