Robert Eggers became one of the most talked-about new directors of recent times when his The Witch premiered at Sundance in 2015 and went on to become an indie hit and one of the defining films of the new wave of elevated horror. Rumors swirled that he would follow the 17th-century horror tale with a reimagining of Nosferatu, but he instead began work on a mysterious story about two men trapped in a battle of wills – and of disintegrating minds – set in a lighthouse off the coast of New England. That film, The Lighthouse, stars Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe as the 19th-century wickies, or lighthouse keepers, who find themselves trapped in the titular structure when a mammoth storm hits; released in limited theaters last week, it s been drumming up big box office receipts and even bigger questions from audiences who ve seen it. Questions like: What the f k was that? As the mind-bending, critically acclaimed flick expands into hundreds of theaters across the country, Rotten Tomatoes Editor-in-Chief Joel Meares sat down with Egge 《俄罗斯方块环游记》是一款腾讯游戏发行的经典俄罗斯方块正版授权休闲益智手游,本站为玩家提供了俄罗斯方块环游记最新正式公测正版下载,在这里去感受到更多的真人竞技对抗,享受到多种创意玩法的挑战,尽情冒险吧。

(Photo by Karwai Tang/WireImage)Laura Carmichael is experiencing something of a streaming Renaissance. The new Peacock service now offers every season of Downton Abbey and the series companion movie. You ll find her in the first season of The Spanish Princess, in which she plays Maggie Pole in the court of Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon, on the Starz site, on demand, in the app, and on partner sites. And today, her new show The Secrets She Keeps launches on SundanceNow.The series is the tale of two women: Agatha (Carmichael), who is eight months pregnant and working at a grocery store to make ends meet, while Meghan (Jessica De Gouw) is pregnant with her third child, this one unplanned and causing tension in her marriage. Agatha is only just informing naval officer Hayden (Michael Sheasby) that he’s the father and is taking an overzealous interest in Meghan.Carmichael, who recently wrapped a second season of The Spanish Princess, shared her pandemic-influenced TV viewing with Rotten Tomatoes and discussed all three series.WHAT IS APPOINTMENT TELEVISION FOR YOU?(Photo by HBO)I have been watching I May Destroy You as it comes out pretty religiously. So the finale was last night in the U.K. — I just devoured it and looked forward to Mondays when we get another installment, another fix. It’s phenomenal and game-changing work.WHAT IS ON YOUR DVR?(Photo by HBO)Nightly at the moment we’re watching The Sopranos and have been working our way through. That’s been a real treat of lockdown and we’re sort of savoring them now as we’re coming to the end of the show, but it’s been a real treat  I had never seen it before so it’s a real thrill.WHAT IS IN YOUR STREAMING QUEUE?(Photo by VH1)I am a religious watcher of RuPaul’s Drag Race. That show comes out on Saturdays for us. It airs in the U.S. on Fridays, but that’s another, tracking that down immediately. I really enjoyed Shrill. That’s a good one. I loved it. I thought it was so smart and funny, and I thought the casting was just great.WHAT’S COMING SOON THAT YOU CAN’T WAIT FOR?(Photo by HBO)I hear that Larry David’s been making some more Curb. I’m not sure how true that is or if they’re just announcing it. I live for Larry David, so very much looking forward to more of that, please.(Photo by SundanceNow)Fred Topel for Rotten Tomatoes: About The Secrets She Keeps, did you go to some dark places to portray Agatha’s stalker behavior? As the episodes go on, you learn more and more about her backstory, which is incredibly dark and painful. So yeah, it was a real kind of playing detective with her life really and building up the layers so that it doesn’t just feel like she’s not just creepy. It comes from this truthful pain that leads her to do quite outrageous and heartbreaking things. The more you learned about how Agatha suffered, did it give you more empathy for her? That’s it. It does feel like she has the most extraordinary, painful life in such a short time. It gives you a lot to build on and I think the way I saw that was that it’s another thing on top of another thing. It leads her to be so volatile that she’s kind of a coiled spring, one more thing on top of the other that any minute she could go nuts. That was my feeling with her and how that led her to do something so drastic and so awful.(Photo by SundanceNow)We see some of her relationships too. Do you think all of the abuse she’s endured makes it hard for her to accept love?I think that’s right. I think there’s definitely a moment with Hayden where she panics and goes, “Oh my God, is this even what I want?” She is surrounding herself in a lot of lies so it’s a real web that she’s in. I think that she would find it difficult to be in any functioning relationship. How much of this did you know about Agatha going into the series? So I had the book which was a great help. I had, I think, most of the scripts going in, so we knew where we would be headed. So that was a combination of just research and piecing together things. I had a good basis going in, which I think you need with something that jumps around a lot.(Photo by SundanceNow)Was this a really intense step into darkness after Downton Abbey or were there more parallels than we might imagine? It’s different from a lot of things I’ve done. I’ve done a bit of crime thriller before with Marcella, but this is definitely the most intense. It had to be that way, I guess, because of the nature of the part. Yeah, it was really different from the world of Downton certainly.Did you have to do your video seduction scene to a blank screen so they could add the video of your partner in later? We had all sorts of things, because it’s a complicated setup having a laptop and then there are times when you need to have a camera. So we had all sorts of interesting versions of it where we could see each other or not see each other. We were both involved in all of the takes, so it was never nothing, but yeah, it was odd. When you’re working on something as intense as The Secrets She Keeps, are you able to leave it on set? There’s a bit of a mixture. It’s a funny thing being far away, the other side of the world to where I normally live, and doing something so intense. I did feel at times kind of raw, but I was lucky I was able to check it and come home and relax and thankfully, be surrounded by a really warm and friendly cast and crew that got me out of my head a bit.(Photo by © Focus Features /courtesy Everett Collection)What are your hopes for people who now have access to all of Downton Abbey on Peacock, whether they’re revisiting it or watching it for the first time?I hope it’s an enjoyable watch. I feel like it’s great viewing for times like this when you’ve got time to binge it and just relax into it. It’s a really warm hug of a show. It’s a really relaxing thing to watch. I hope people who are coming to it anew get that same feeling. Was it heartwarming for you that Lady Edith became such a sympathetic character for audiences?Absolutely. I felt very lucky the arc that she went on. I loved that she went from not being people’s favorite to being a good one in their eyes. Are you hoping to do a movie sequel? There are rumors of it, which is thrilling because it wasn’t the idea of it. So we’ll just have to see what Julian [Fellowes] comes out with and hope that he’s been busy during lockdown.(Photo by Starz)What can we expect from season 2 of The Spanish Princess? It’s carrying on into their marriage now. Series 1 ended with the marriage, and we see how Henry and Catherine do as newlyweds and further into their marriage. It’s a fascinating unraveling of what we know is a doomed romance really. For my character, she’s restored to her wealth and titles, but there’s still tension within the court. It’s a fresh court and a lot of characters died in the last series, so there’s lots of fresh faces and shuffling of positions. It really sees Henry becomes the king we recognize as Henry VIII, where he is a bit of the philanderer and the drinker, leaving behind the young romantic we got to know in the first series. The Secrets She Keeps premieres July 16 on SundanceNow.

Subscribers of HBO MAX get two Seth Rogens for the price of one with the streaming service’s first original feature, An American Pickle. Rogen stars as a Jewish immigrant in 1919 who winds up thrust forward a century into modern America, where he meets his great-great-grandson — also played by Rogen. The one-man, two-character comedy is receiving mostly positive reviews, which highlight a sentimentality over hilarity as well as a surprising performance from its lead in his dual roles. Here’s what critics are saying about An American Pickle:Does HBO Max have its first hit on its hands? It marks an auspicious beginning and is sure to be a crowd-pleaser.  Pete Hammond, DeadlineAn American Pickle is an absolutely brilliant two-hander… it’s exactly what we need right now.  Courtney Howard, Fresh FictionIn a time when we can all use a good laugh, An American Pickle very much delivers.  Eric Eisenberg, Cinema BlendEven premiering on HBO Max, it feels awfully inconsequential, like an ambitious Funny or Die sketch.  Matt Singer, ScreenCrush(Photo by HBO Max)How is Seth Rogen? This dual performance is the best, purest thing he s ever done as an artist, in front of or behind the camera. Matt Zoller Seitz, RogerEbert.comAn American Pickle features what may be the most mature performance we’ve seen from Seth Rogen in a while. Danielle Solzman, Solzy at the MoviesThe most exciting part of this pickle is Rogen s breaking of his manchild mold to explore roles more challenging, rich, and uniquely funny. Kristy Puchko, IGNAn American Pickle gets by on the strength (or make that strengths) of Rogen’s performance. Chris Evangelista, SlashfilmRogen is so adept at breathing depth into two distinct roles. David Rooney, Hollywood ReporterBoth roles ultimately demand a lot from Rogen, and he is exceptional. Eric Eisenberg, Cinema BlendSo two Seth Rogens isn t too much Seth Rogen?I was expecting something along the lines of Adam Sandler in Jack and Jill, but what I got instead is reminiscent of Nic Cage in Adaptation. Rendy Jones, Rendy ReviewsThe movie trickery, laid on with extensive CGI effects, is impressive, aided immeasurably by Rogen in top form on both accounts. Pete Hammond, DeadlineWhile the premise is promising, the execution aches from the growing pains of Rogen s shifting persona. Kristy Puchko, IGN(Photo by HBO Max)Is it funny? It’s not laugh-out-loud funny; it’s folksy funny. Michael Roffman, Consequence of SoundAn American Pickle is more interesting than laugh-out-loud hilarious. Mike Ryan, Uproxx[It’s] a comedy too contrived to be convincing and too formulaic to be funny. Owen Gleiberman, VarietyThere are some scattered laughs but it s not particularly funny. Brian Truitt, USA TodayAn American Pickle lacks the focus to be hilarious or emotional. Instead, it’s a frustrating, ramshackle affair. Matt Goldberg, ColliderDoes it hold particular appeal if you re Jewish? An American Pickle is most certainly the type of film that will appeal more so to Jewish viewers than a broad comedy audience. Danielle Solzman, Solzy at the MoviesThe humor is for the most part genuinely funny, and even doubly funny if you share in the Jewish references. Gabriella Geisinger, Digital Spy(Photo by HBO Max)Is this a more sentimental affair? There’s a lot of heart behind the picture’s sentiments about familial honor, work ethic and religious heritage. Courtney Howard, Fresh FictionAn American Pickle uses arguably the dumbest concept imaginable to tell a surprisingly tender story. Brandon Katz, ObserverThere’s an undeniable and lovely sweetness at play in this film; a type of warmth and acceptance that helps elevate the entire package. Chris Evangelista, SlashfilmAn American Pickle is swift and nimble enough to avoid weighing itself down with schmaltz. A.O. Scott, New York TimesIts soulful sweetness outweighs its flaws. David Rooney, Hollywood ReporterAn American Pickle premieres on HBO Max on Thursday, August 6.

(Photo by Columbia Pictures)Disney remained in full dominance at the box office this weekend, though Quentin Tarantino had the biggest opening of his career and a shot at his fourth 0 million grosser.King of the Crop(Photo by © Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)No surprise that Disney’s The Lion King was able to hold on to the No. 1 slot this week. Even with a 60 percent drop, the animated film was still able to haul in million. That is the ninth-best second weekend of all time, and with 3 million in the bank it is good enough for eighth place after ten days of release. Incredibles 2 last year had 9.7 million and the live-action Beauty and the Beast was at 9 million in 2017. They now move down to ninth and tenth all-time. All signs right now suggest Jon Favreau’s redo is headed north of 0 million domestic. It is over 2 million worldwide to date and already 47th on the all-time chart.Once Upon a Time…Generally, films about Hollywood and the industry do not draw the same reactions from the public as they do from critics and people in the know. Comedies such as Tropic Thunder, Get Shorty, and Bowfinger have done well enough, but more inside baseball stuff about the business, like Ed Wood and Hail, Caesar!, have not exactly attracted major interest. But throw in two of the most recognizable names in front of the camera and a third behind it and all of a sudden you have Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, which earned the biggest opening of Quentin Tarantino’s career with .35 million. Better even than his last go-round with Brad Pitt in August 2009 when Inglourious Basterds opened to .05 million. However, it may be the other star that is the true secret sauce.Leonardo DiCaprio is as safe a bet these days in casting original projects. Directors like Martin Scorsese and Christopher Nolan help, but the Oscar winner also elevated Baz Luhrmann and Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu to the biggest successes of their careers as well. DiCaprio’s last four films (including his supporting turn in Django Unchained) have grossed 6 million or higher. Go back a full decade to 2010 and you can make the streak six out of seven (with Clint Eastwood’s J. Edgar being the sole outlier with just .3 million total). Inception (.7 million), The Great Gatsby ( million), and Shutter Island ( million) all opened higher, but that just means that Once Upon a Time is the fourth-best opener of DiCaprio’s career, just as it is Pitt’s. World War Z (.4 million), Mr. Mrs. Smith (.3 million), and Troy (.8 million) all opened higher. Pitt has had ten 0 million grossers as either a lead or co-lead. If you count Django, then DiCaprio has had ten as well. An opening like this certainly gives both actors a chance to take those numbers to 11.The Top Ten And Beyond(Photo by Sony Pictures)Spider-Man: Far From Home crossed the billion-dollar line worldwide this week; it is the first Spidey film to do so. With 4 million after 27 days, the film overall is still right in line with 0 million grosser The Hunger Games and still a bit ahead of 2002’s Spider-Man. However, its fourth weekend of .2 million is well behind the respective million and .5 million fourth weekends of those films, so it is fading a bit faster. Transformers: Dark of the Moon posted a million fourth weekend as well, and finished with 2 million. Far From Home is still about million ahead of that film’s place and is likely headed somewhere in the vicinity of Spider-Man 2’s 3 million. Worldwide it is currently the 32nd-best earner of all time and seems on track to pass Skyfall’s .108 billion and become Sony’s highest-grossing film ever.Toy Story 4 is going to cross 0 million domestic next weekend, and after 38 days is the 18th-highest grosser ever. Its .8 million sixth weekend is better than 11 of the top 20 films on that list, and looks ready to finish north of 5 million. That will help get the film over a billion as it currently stands as the 56th-highest-grossing film ever worldwide. Ahead of it at the moment, globally, is Disney’s live-action Aladdin, which, with .009 billion in the bank, is the 39th-highest-grosser ever. Finally, in limited release news, Lulu Wang’s The Farewell — still brandishing a perfect 100% on the Tomatometer — made it into the Top Ten this weekend. It is the first film not in wide release to hit the top ten since the weekend of Mar. 22-24 when No Manches Frida 2 grossed .77 million in 472 theaters. The Farewell is only in 135 theaters nationwide and grossed .55 million this weekend. How does that stack up to similar releases? That is better than A24’s Eighth Grade did last summer when it expanded to 158 theaters in weekend three and grossed .26 million. When Revolutionary Road jumped to the same number of theaters in its third weekend, it grossed .42 million that week and went on to gross .91 million total. Among a sample of some of the more successful indie releases between 125-150 theaters at this point, The Farewell is not quite up to the heights of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon or Midnight In Paris, but with .6 million after 17 days it is ahead of all the rest of them, including such notable titles as There Will Be Blood, Boogie Nights, and Thank You For Smoking. Next weekend’s nationwide expansion will paint a larger picture. This Time Last Year(Photo by © Paramount)It was Tom Cruise and Mission: Impossible – Fallout handily leading the way with a .23 million opening. That was more than the next five films in the top ten combined, including the disappointing bow for Teen Titans Go! To The Movies, which only began with .41 million. Both films were very well-liked with critics, scoring 97% and 91%, respectively. Last year’s entire Top Ten averaged 71% on the Tomatometer and the Top Ten grossed 3.33 million; just the 42nd-best among July weekends since 1990. This year’s Top Ten averaged 73.7% on the Tomatometer and grossed a total of 2.52 million, only the 34th best.On the Vine: Hobbs Shaw Hopes For Spinoff SuccessFor the third week in a row Hollywood is delivering just a single new wide release into theaters and it could be another big one. Fast Furious Presents: Hobbs Shaw hopes to explode next week after the previous three films in the franchise opened to million or higher. Will Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham’s partnership draw the loyal fanbase to similar numbers? Also next week, A24 expands Lulu Wang’s The Farewell nationwide. And look for other well-received Sundance fare in limited release, including Luce (95%) with Naomi Watts, Octavia Spencer, and Kelvin Harrison Jr., as well as Jennifer Kent’s follow-up to

t this November, but was delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic until next year on April 15, 2022. The movie is less than a year away from release, but it was only this week that we found out the voice cast will include Awkwafina, Anthony Ramos (In the Heights), Sam Rockwell, Zazie Beetz, Marc Maron, Craig Robinson. In related news, Searchlight Pictures announced this week that their previously-untitled murder mystery starring Sam Rockwell and Saoirse Ronan will be called See How They Run, and it will be release sometime in 2022.7. MYSTERIOUS PREDATOR PREQUEL SKULL COMPARED TO SURVIVAL THRILLER THE REVENANT(Photo by Fox/Everett Collection)10 Cloverfield Lane director Dan Trachtenberg is currently about 75% finished filming his next project, which was confirmed this week to be titled Skull. What that title doesn t tell you is that the film is actually a prequel to a fan favorite sci-fi action franchise: It will tell the story of the the alien hunters from the Predator series in a survival thriller set some time in the past that s being compared to the The Revenant. The only known Skull cast member right now is Amber Midthunder (Legion, The Ice Road), who was reportedly cast as a Comanche warrior woman who is forced to fight a Predator.8. THE CHI STAR JOINS HOUSE PARTY REMAKE AFTER CAST SHAKEUP (Photo by Showtime)Hollywood s remake fever has nearly run out of ideal properties from the 1980s, so the trend is starting to move more and more towards revisiting the 1990s (and by the end of the 2020s, we ll probably start seeing lots of remakes from the 2000s). After several years of development, New Line Cinema is ready to start filming their remake of the 1990 Kid n Play comedy hit House Party. Tosin Cole (Ryan Sinclair from Doctor Who) and Jorge Lendeborg Jr (Bumblebee) had been cast in April, but Lendeborg reportedly recently dropped out to focus on his mental well-being. His role will instead go to Jacob Latimore of the Showtime series The Chi. The original House Party was an ensemble comedy, so this remake probably will be as well, but none of those roles have been announced yet.9. SCARLETT JOHANSSON SUES DISNEY OVER BLACK WIDOW STREAMING STRATEGY(Photo by Marvel Studios)Walt Disney Pictures received criticism for their decision to stream Black Widow day-and-date with the theatrical release, which has resulted in s its international box office looking like it will to end up about where Scarlett Johansson s Lucy (3 million) did far below most MCU films. Johansson took on the issue directly this week by filing a lawsuit against Disney, accusing the studio over a breach of contract. Key to Johansson s suit is that her contract was based on bonuses from the box office performance of Black Widow, which the lawsuit alleges were significantly reduced because of the decision to stream Black Widow on Disney+.  Disney responded by calling the lawsuit sad and distressing in its callous disregard for the horrific and prolonged global effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Johansson s agent replied to that as being a direct attack on her character. More reactions can be read here. What is unclear is how this lawsuit will impact  Johansson s future dealings with both Marvel Studios and Walt Disney Pictures, where for example, she had just recently developing a movie project based on the Walt Disney Theme Parks attraction Tower of Terror. On an Apple device? The Scream reboot (also sometimes called Scream 5) looks like it might finally happen with this week s news that the project has gone to the team behind last year s Hide and Seek horror film, Ready or Not (Certified Fresh at 88%). The Scream reboot will be directed by the same co-directors from a screenplay by Chad Villella, who executive produced Ready or Not.2. ALL MOVIES FROM THE NEXT THREE WEEKS DELAYED, INCLUDING A QUIET PLACE PART II (Photo by Paramount Pictures)Movie release dates change all the time, but the COVID-19 coronavirus is having such an impact that as of this writing, there are exactly zero movies scheduled for wide release in the next three weeks (3/20, 3/27, and 4/3). After today, the next wide release (unless it also moves) will be Trolls World Tour on April 10. So, how did we get to that huge gap in the schedule? The biggest film to move was A Quiet Place Part II, which was pulled from its release next Friday (3/20/2020) to be rescheduled at a later date. You can read director John Krasinski s statement about the movie on Twitter right here. Incidentally, this delay came soon after John Krasinski revealed that he already has ideas for A Quiet Place Part III, so he might now have more time to work on that third film. Paramount also pulled The Lovebirds from April 3rd, and STXfilms moved My Spy (after many other release date shifts) from today to April 17th. The Jackass-style comedy Bad Trip was also pushed back from April 10th to April 17th. One movie that was pushed back out of this range that actually does have a release date now is Peter Rabbit 2: The Runway, which got moved from its Easter-friendly April 3rd release date to August 7, 2020 (it s not like Peter Rabbit is the Easter Bunny, though many make that mistake).3. DISNEY POSTPONES MULAN, THE NEW MUTANTS, AND HORROR FILM ANTLERS(Photo by Walt Disney Studios)One of the films that was arguably hardest hit by delays caused by Disney s acquisition of 20th Century Fox last year was the Marvel Comics movie The New Mutants, which was originally scheduled for release on April 13, 2018. The long wait for The New Mutants seemed to finally be over as we entered this week, and Disney continued to promote the film s April 3, 2020 release, including this nifty teaser that shows off Magik as played by Anya Taylor-Joy (Emma, The Witch). The beginning of promotion for The New Mutants also included director Josh Boone revealing that the sequel would have been called New Mutants: Brazil and would have introduced Antonio Banderas as Sunspot s dad. That was, unfortunately, soon followed by more bad news for The New Mutants, yet again, as Disney has pulled three films from their March and April release dates: Mulan (was 3/27/2020), The New Mutants (was 4/3/2020), and Antlers (was 4/17/2020). Disney said in a statement that, We truly believe in the moviegoing experience, and we are looking at new potential 2020 release dates to be announced at a later date. 4. DISNEY CASTS ITS PETER PAN WENDY (Photo by Dee Cercone/Everett Collection)As you ll read below, filming on several Disney projects has been suspended, and one of them was Peter Pan Wendy, Disney s live-action remake of the 1953 animated classic Peter Pan. That was actually the second time that Peter Pan Wendy made the news this week, because just two days earlier, Disney announced who was playing the two leads. The role of Peter went to 12-year-old relative newcomer Alexander Molony, who to date has mostly appeared in TV shows like Claude and The Reluctant Landlord. The role of Wendy will be played by Ever Anderson, who, by birth, has perhaps a little more inherent fame, because her parents are actress Milla Jovovich and director Paul W.S. Anderson, who frequently directs Jovovich in video game adaptations like the Resident Evil franchise and the upcoming Monster Hunter (9/4/2020). Ever Anderson made her film debut playing a younger version of her mom (and the Red Queen) in Resident Evil: The Final Chapter.5. F9 PUSHED BACK TO THE 2021 DATE WHEN F10 WAS SUPPOSED TO BE RELEASED (Photo by Universal Pictures)So far, most of the delays related to coronavirus concerns seem to be just for the next month or two, but some studios are reacting with much longer delays. The biggest came from Universal Pictures, which pulled F9 (the ninth Fast Furious movie) from its 5/22/2020 release date, and pushed it all the way back to April 2, 2021. The curious thing about that particular date is that it was previously the release date for the next movie in the franchise, F10, which is presumably now delayed to late 2021 or even 2022 instead. The status of the production and release of F10 wasn t really addressed in Universal s statement this week (though it s worth noting that Vin Diesel has talked about the final film actually being split into two parts ).6. DISNEY DELAYS FILMING OF THE LITTLE MERMAID, SHANG-CHI, AND MANY MORE (Photo by Walt Disney courtesy Everett Collection)While several films have seen their imminent release dates shift over the past few days, there are still others that would have been currently filmed for late 2020 or 2021, and they re also being delayed for similar reasons. One major project that has stopped filming temporarily is Marvel Studios Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2/12/2021), because its director Destin Daniel Cretton has chosen to self-quarantine himself. That news was followed mere hours later by the announcement that Walt Disney Pictures had halted production of several film and TV projects, including the live-action remakes of The Little Mermaid (just nine days before filming was to start in London) and Peter Pan and Wendy, as well as Guillermo del Toro s Nightmare Alley and Ridley Scott s The Last Duel. Other studios are also halting production on some of their projects, including Universal Pictures romantic comedy Bros (starring Billy Eichner) and Sony Pictures The Nightingale (12/25/2020), starring Dakota and Elle Fanning, not to be confused with the 2019 film that shares the same title.7. TOM HANKS TESTS POSITIVE FOR COVID-19 WHILE FILMING BAZ LUHRMANN S ELVIS PRESLEY BIOPIC (Photo by Sony Pictures)There were dozens of stories this week about the impact of the COVID-19 coronavirus on Hollywood and its movies, but there was one story that definitively resonated across social media. Tom Hanks and his wife Rita Wilson have been in Australia to film Baz Luhrmann s untitled Elvis Presley biopic (10/1/2021), in which Hanks plays Colonel Tom Parker. It was there where Hanks and Wilson announced to the world that they have tested positive for COVID-19 (their statement is worth reading if just to learn their symptoms). Meanwhile, production in Australia on the Elvis Presley biopic is temporarily halted, as many other productions have done this week. Hanks son, Colin Hanks, also took to Twitter soon after to give fans an update about their conditions.8. WOODY HARRELSON REPLACES JASON STATHAM AS THE MAN FROM TORONTO (Photo by Glen Wilson/©Columbia Pictures)It can be sort of fascinating to delve into casting stories over time and take note of which actors almost landed certain roles that were ultimately made famous by someone else. Just last week, we reported that Jason Statham had dropped out of the Kevin Hart action comedy The Man from Toronto, and now a week later, we can also reveal who someone in Hollywood thought was comparable enough to Jason Statham to be his replacement. The answer turns out to be a former sitcom star from Texas which is quite different from an English action star  namely Woody Harrelson (Zombieland, Venom 2, The Hunger Games), who has signed a deal to star in The Man from Toronto opposite Kevin Hart. Sony Pictures has scheduled The Man from Toronto for release on November 20, 2020 (up against the monster movie Godzilla vs Kong), and the week before the James Bond movie No Time to Die.9. VIN DIESEL CONFIRMS SEQUEL PLANS FOR THE LAST WITCH HUNTER (Photo by Scott Garfield/©Summit Entertainment)Vin Diesel has become synonymous with his most successful franchise, the Fast Furious movies, even if he s got plenty of other movies on his résumé (like this week s Bloodshot, Rotten at 35%, or as the voice of Groot in the Guardians of the Galaxy movies). Perhaps looking for another possible franchise (especially with Fast Furious 10 expected to be the last in that run), Diesel is now talking about plans for a sequel to the 2015 fantasy action adventure The Last Witch Hunter (Rotten at 17%). It s understandable if you can t remember that The Last Witch Hunter was even a movie (people will probably eventually feel the same way about Bloodshot), as it only earned million domestically. Nevertheless, Vin Diesel confirmed that Lionsgate has hired a writer for the sequel (though he doesn t drop their name), and that he s sometimes approached by fans who want to see him and Michael Caine return for a sequel.

Best-Reviewed Movies 2020: United KingdomWant variety? Look to the best U.K. movies of the year, according to the critics. There’s groundbreaking horror – the 100% Certified Fresh His House and Zoom horror smash Host – plus a searing drama that puts you in the deteriorating mind of a man suffering from dementia (The Father), a zing-filled historical comedy (The Personal History of David Copperfield), and a thrilling documentary (White Riot). Notably, three of the films – His House, The Father, and White Riot – come from directors making their feature film debuts. The order of the rank below reflects the Adjusted Score as of February 28, 2021. Scores might change over time.« Previous Category Next Category » The nominees for the 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards were filled with new faces — like Ted Lasso and its most-ever nominations for a first-year series — and old — The Crown s 24 nods make it the most nominated show of the year, alongside The Mandalorian. But there were plenty of actors and series missing from the list on Tuesday morning, and many who upset some category stalwarts to score coveted nomination slots. There was plenty of outcry when Emily in Paris was nominated for the Golden Globes, but the mixed-reviewed Netflix series managed to sneak into the Comedy category at the Emmys, too. On the other hand, shows like Amazon Prime Video s The Boys and Hulu s Pen15 also managed to score their first series nominations, in Drama and Comedy respectively, leading many to rejoice.Read on for our full list of snubs and surprises then let us know which nomination – or lack thereof – had you angrily texting your group chats on Tuesday morning.Related: • 2021 Emmy Nominations: Full list of Nominees for 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards• Rotten Tomatoes Predicts the 2021 Emmy NomineesSURPRISE: I MAY DESTROY YOU GETS SO MUCH LOVE(Photo by Laura Radford/HBO)Listen, TV critics might have rioted in the streets if Michaela Coel’s singular work of art I May Destroy You didn t land any nominations, but this many? More than a year after it premiered? A very, very pleasant surprise considering sometimes the Television Academy members seem to have the memory of a goldfish. In addition to the show itself, Coel was nominated for her performance, writing and directing, Paapa Essiedu was nominated for his performance, and Sam Miller was also nominated for directing.SNUB: GIRLS5EVA GETS LARGELY IGNORED(Photo by Peacock)Even a near-perfect Certified Fresh score couldn t get the Tina Fey–produced sitcom Girls5Eva, about a ’90s girl group working toward a comeback, the Emmys love it deserved. Renee Elise Goldsberry’s iconic performance as a pop diva? Snubbed (though she did get a nod for her performance in the filmed Hamilton musical). Sara Bareilles many musical compositions? Snubbed. The only nod the show received was for creator Meredith Scardino s writing, a very, very small comfort.SURPRISE: THE BOYS LANDS A DRAMA SERIES NOD(Photo by James Minchin/Amazon Prime Video)Sure, the second season of Amazon s sardonic superhero series The Boys is Certified Fresh at 97%, but did anyone expect the sometimes-stodgy Television Academy to recognize that fact? The Emmy voters occasionally get stuck in their old patterns, and it s hard for new shows to break through, especially when there really is so much great television out there. But The Boys did it — just in time for season 3.SURPRISE: MJ RODRIGUEZ SCORES HISTORICAL FIRST NOMINATION(Photo by Eric Liebowitz/FX)Pose has been recognized many times over with series nods and even a win for star Billy Porter, but the other lead of the series, Mj Rodriguez hasn t even gotten a nomination before — until now. Just as the character of Blanca grew into a confident, wise mentor for her ballroom children, Rodriguez delivered a poised, hopeful, and occasionally heartbreaking performance in the series final season. She s always been worthy of Emmy love, but this time the Academy listened. With this nomination, Rodriguez is the first-ever out trans performer nominated in a major acting category.SNUB: IT S A SIN SHUT OUT(Photo by Ben Blackall/HBO Max)Certified Fresh at 98%, HBO Max drama It s a Sin, about a group of friends enduring the AIDS crisis in London in the 80s, is an incredible feat of small-screen magic, according to critics. (There s also the exquisite cast, empathetic writing, and a distinct visual style, per our Critics Consensus.) But apparently that wasn t enough for the TV Academy to take notice? Sometimes the Emmy voters get it very, very wrong — like in this case.SURPRISE: KENAN THOMPSON NOMINATED TWICE OVER(Photo by NBC/Mary Ellen Matthews)The longest-tenured Saturday Night Live cast member has just one Emmy to his name — for the parody song Come Back Barack in 2018 — and, until this year, had just three more nominations. He scored his third Supporting Actor nomination for SNL in 2021, but also landed his first-ever Lead Actor nomination for sitcom Kenan, which he filmed while starring on this season of SNL, flying back and forth from Los Angeles to New York throughout the season. A long-overdue acknowledgement for someone who s been bringing laughs for 30 years.SURPRISE: SHAMELESS NOMINATION LEAVES OTHER COMEDY ACTORS OUT IN THE COLD(Photo by Showtime)The final season of Shameless went out with a whimper of a Tomatometer score at 67%, but that was nothing compared to the shameful 20% score on its penultimate season. Those figures combined with William H. Macy’s involvement in the college admissions scandal story that broke in 2019 would understandably cast a shadow over his possible nomination. But here he is, honored (forgiven? pitied?) by his peers. Or is it that the 15-time nominee, two-time Emmy winner s performance shone through a just-OK season? In truth, we had expected to see Alan Tudyk (Resident Alien, Certified Fresh at 94%), Rob McElhenney (Mythic Quest, Certified Fresh at 100%), or Billy Magnussen (Made for Love, Certified Fresh at 94%) take a nomination, so this is a surprise.SNUBS: LATE NIGHT MISSES VARIETY TALK SERIES NOMINATIONLate Night with Seth Meyers has been nominated for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series the past four years in a row and got a nod this year for Outstanding Short Form Comedy, Drama or Variety Series. The 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards were expected to be Late Night’s year for that elusive Outstanding Variety Talk Series nomination, but went instead to Conan, receiving its first nomination in the category for its final season; four-time nominee in this category The Daily Show With Trevor Noah; seven-time nominated Jimmy Kimmel Live!; five-time nominated The Late Show With Stephen Colbert; and, of course, Last Week Tonight With John Oliver, which has won in the category for the past six years.SURPRISE: AIDY BRYANT FINALLY GETS RECOGNIZED FOR SHRILL(Photo by Hulu)Aidy Bryant has been turning in reliable, excellent work on Saturday Night Live for years now, so that particular nod is not surprising. What is a bit of a shock is her recognition for the bittersweet final season of Shrill, the show she created and starred in but which Emmy voters had ignored in its two previous seasons.SNUB: PHOEBE DYNEVOR SHUT OUT FOR BRIDGERTON(Photo by Liam Daniel/Netflix)Bridgerton’s Duke might ve gotten his due with a nomination for Regé-Jean Page, but his Duchess (Phoebe Dynevor), whose wide-eyed naiveté was the perfect foil for their Bridgerton antics, missed out. Crackling chemistry like that between the world-weary Simon Bassett and his innocent new bride isn t just one-sided, you know.SURPRISE: EMILY IN PARIS SCORES A COVETED COMEDY SLOT(Photo by CAROLE BETHUEL/NETFLIX)The Golden Globes nominating candy-colored Netflix comedy Emily in Paris after some lavish trips for journalists to the City of Lights? Not surprising. The Television Academy recognizing the series in the Comedy category alongside much, much better-reviewed series like the Certified Fresh seasons of Hacks, Pen15, Ted Lasso, The Flight Attendant, and Cobra Kai that also got nods? Definitely surprising.SURPRISE: STAR WARS SERIES CHARMS TELEVISION ACADEMY AGAIN WITH ITS SECOND SEASON(Photo by © 2020 Lucasfilm Ltd. ™. All Rights Reserved.)Was it a surprise? That’s what we’ve asked ourselves since Disney+ Star Wars series The Mandalorian was announced as a nominee in the Outstanding Drama Series category or the second year in a row. The series has 24 nominations this year to last year’s 15 (with seven wins). We bet on it in our Emmy predictions – maybe we’re just surprised we were right about a series led by a man encased in metal and an adorable muppet.SNUBS: ONE OF THE NOMINATIONS MOST BIRD-BRAINED OMISSIONS (Photo by William Gray/Showtime)No stranger to the awards circuit, Ethan Hawke has been nominated four times for an Academy Award: two for supporting actor in films Boyhood and Training Day and another two for adapted screenplay for Before Sunset and Before Midnight. He also won a Daytime Emmy that he shared with a boatload of people for interactive feature “Invasion!” in 2017. Limited series The Good Lord Bird, Certified Fresh at 97% on the Tomatometer, contains one of Hawke’s most eccentric and finest performances to date. Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie nominees Ewan McGregor (Halston), Lin-Manuel Miranda (Hamilton), Leslie Odom Jr. (Hamilton), Hugh Grant (The Undoing), and Paul Bettany (WandaVision) surely are deserving, but Hawke’s quirky transformation was positively sublime.SURPRISE: COBRA KAI TURNS UP TO COMPETE IN THE OUTSTANDING COMEDY SERIES CATEGORY(Photo by Netflix)The Mandalorian, The Boys, and the Karate Kid sequel series Cobra Kai – the Emmy nominations have never been more fanboy friendly! This pandemic year has provided some great escapism and nostalgia-fueled works, but with heavy competition in the category – and very like its fellow nominee Emily in Paris –this is a title we didn’t expect to see. We had guessed that four other titles would find their way on the list – Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist, Girls5Eva, Made for Love, and Mythic Quest – and we were very wrong.SNUBS: THUSO MBEDU IS OVERLOOKED IN A RED-HOT CATEGORY(Photo by Kyle Kaplan/Amazon Studios)With seven nominations, including Outstanding Limited Or Anthology Series, The Underground Railroad was a major point of pride for Amazon Studios on the day the nominations were announced. But among all of the awards for directing, music, sound, casting, and cinematography, there was not a single acting nod. Baffling. Star Thuso Mbedu faced powerful competition for a spot among the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie nominees with Cythia Erivo (Genius: Aretha), Michaela Coel (I May Destroy You), Kate Winslet (Mare of Easttown), Anya Taylor-Joy (The Queen’s Gambit), and Elizabeth Olsen (WandaVision) showing up. But still.Thumbnail Image Credit: FX, Disney+/Lucasfilm, Netflix

How do you make a Disney film that feels dark and edgy, but still has that magic Mouse House feeling? That was the task set out before director Craig Gillespie and stars Emma Stone and Emma Thompson as they prepped to make Cruella, an origin story for the fashionable and evil villain of Disney’s 101 Dalmatians. What they come up with is delighting critics and is surely going to be a hit with audiences: a punk take on The Devil Wears Prada in which sometime designer and full-time thief Estella (Stone) is slowly taken over by her dark side – Cruella – as she grows closer to the fabulous queen of London fashion, the Baroness (Thompson).Ahead of the movie’s release in theaters and on Disney+, Rotten Tomatoes correspondent Nikki Novak spoke with Stone and Thompson about the inspirations for their feuding divas, making a film perfect for the big screen, and whether they’d be on board for a Godfather: Part 2-inspired sequel that could also feature Glenn Close. (Spoiler: They love the idea.)Plus, we caught up with Gillespie to talk about the challenge of taking Disney to some places it’s never been and why making the big-budget flick felt like an making an indie; and spoke with co-stars Kirby Howell-Baptiste, Joel Fry, and Paul Walter Hauser about their unique spins on characters we know and love… and just how much Cruella is lurking in their own personalities.Cruella is in theaters and available on Disney+ with Premier Access Friday May 28, 2021.On an Apple device?
