ptation of the sixth novel, Confess, Fletch, which Hamm is both starring in and producing. It also turns out that Confess, Fletch will be a Mad Men reunion project for Hamm, as he has cast John Slattery, who played Don Draper s boss and eventual partner Roger Sterling. Other Confess, Fletch co-stars will include Marcia Gay Harden, Kyle MacLachlan, and Annie Mummulo (Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar).7. CHRIS PRATT TO STAR IN KARATE COMEDY THE BLACK BELT (Photo by Chuck Zlotnick/©Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)For most of the last seven years since Chris Pratt scored two big hits in 2014 with The LEGO Movie and Guardians of the Galaxy, his big screen output has focused on big franchise action movies like his various movies as Marvel s Star-Lord and  the Jurassic World franchise. Pratt s first real big break, of course, was as the goofball Andy Dwyer on the NBC sitcom Parks and Recreation, and it looks like he may channel the spirit of Andy again, as he will star in a karate-themed movie called The Black Belt for frequent Saturday Night Live sketch director Paul Briganti. Pratt will star in The Black Belt as an eccentric uncle who trains his shy teenage nephew in the ways of karate. The role of the nephew hasn t been cast yet.8. LANCE REDDICK TO REPRISE CONCIERGE ROLE IN JOHN WICK: CHAPTER 4 (Photo by ©Summit Entertainment)When it comes to franchises with recurring casts, it s easy to take it for granted when it s announced that a particular actor is indeed returning for the next movie, but that doesn t mean it s not news. Prolific TV actor Lance Reddick (The Wire, Fringe, LOST) has been in every John Wick movie thus far as the mysterious Charon, the concierge of the Continental, where international assassins come to mingle and rest up, and he will do the same again in John Wick: Chapter 4. Reddick and star Keanu Reeves will be joined by a cast of new co-stars that includes Donnie Yen, Shamier Anderson, Hiroyuki Sanada, and pop star Rina Sawayama.9. COLD PURSUIT AND GREENLAND SEQUELS THAWING (Photo by ©STX Entertainment)Despite the impact the COVID-19 pandemic has had on the movie business, two actors who showed they were still able to attract audiences (on some level) were Scotland s Gerard Butler (with Greenland, Certified Fresh at 78%) and Northern Ireland s Liam Neeson (with Honest Thief and The Ice Road). Just before COVID-19 struck, Neeson also starred in the action thriller Cold Pursuit (Fresh at 69%), and this week, the news broke that Studiocanal is moving forward with plans for a Cold Pursuit sequel (along with lots of other new projects announced at Cannes on Tuesday), which will presumably find Neeson s snowplow driver again in some sort of danger. Cold Pursuit 2 wasn t the only snow-themed sequel to make the news this week, as Greenland: Migration was confirmed to start filming in 2022, with Butler, Morena Baccarin, and director Ric Roman Waugh all returning for the sequel, which will focus on the family from the first film coping with life (spoiler) in the post-apocalyptic world following the events of Greenland. On an Apple device? Subjective reality is still a key element of the series, and while audiences may still end up sympathetic to David’s pain, Hawley hoped viewers “realize over the course of the season how this need for love — that he feels is solely about him — begins to distance us from David a bit [and think,] ‘Oh, he s a very ill man.’”But even in that, his illness does not necessary equal villainy in the Golden Age comic book sense. David’s selfishness may, however, lead some to see him that way. “We expect our characters to learn and to be redeemed, but there are some people who aren t really capable of that,” Hawley said.Meanwhile, Amahl Farouk is, in fact, trying to redeem himself. Though, as Negahban put it, “it s more about saving the world and also saving David. He really cares about David.” Despite being the unambiguous evil orbiting David’s life in the first season, Farouk is a changed person when we meet him at the beginning of Season 3. “He s trying to be a good boy,” the actor said. “There has been a struggle for him to kind of determine whether [that is] right or wrong for him. And he s trying to discover that through his journey.”In some ways, the journey, as Negahban relayed it, parallels David’s major internal conflict. “He came from nothing. He became somebody, he had the power. He got lost in his power; he didn t know what to do with it. And his rage and anger took over,” he explained. “It goes full circle and it gets to the point that he realizes that that rage and anger is what is destroying him. So if he can get rid of that, he can redeem himself. He can redo everything.”(Photo by Pari Dukovic/FX)To some extent, Hawley said the conflicts mirror the tension between childhood and adulthood, adding that at least some of David’s issues go back to the moment his birth parents gave him up for adoption. And David’s attempt to stop Farouk in the past means he may run into his father, X-Men founder Charles Xavier (Harry Lloyd).Lloyd told us not to expect the “straight-laced Charles we know” from the X-Men films or animated television series.“It s trippy stuff,” said Stevens, adding there is “a lot of confusion and hurt, obviously” in regards to David s feelings on Xavier.“It is nice to finally to have this string that ties our crazy balloon to the main raft of the X-Men stories,” he continued. “And I think that will be satisfying to people who know and love X-Men and Legion. He also suspected Legion viewers not well-versed in X-Men lore will become curious about the Professor and his Merry Mutants: [It] might cause them to go and watch some other X-Men-y type things.”Of course, it remains to be seen if David will follow in his comic book counterpart s footsteps and end the world as viewers have known it. That story was ultimately resolved when somewhat familiar mutants from the new timeline learned about David s actions and prevented Xavier s death. It is a pretty out-there idea and, yet, fits pretty well into the framework of Legion. No one on set was willing to divulge if the ending resembles David s most infamous comic book turn, but Stevens said the end gives the whole story a meaning not readily apparent before. It s really delicately done, I think. And very beautiful, he said.Legion season 3 premieres Monday, June 24 at 10 p.m. on FXLike this? With Thor: Ragnarok, writer-director Taika Waititi showed there was a different way to do comic-book movies; with his follow-up film, Jojo Rabbit, he s showing there s a different way to look at World War 2. That different way is through the eyes of 10-year-old Jojo (Roman Griffin Davis), a young German nationalist who finds his allegiances to his country challenged when he learns his mother (played by Scarlett Johansson) is housing a Jewish teenager in the attic. To help cope he turns to his imaginary friend Adolf, an eccentric version of the Führer played with flair by Waititi himself. Jojo Rabbit won the Audience Award at the 2019 Toronto International Film Festival, and has been impressing critics with its bold, satirical, and laugh-out-loud look at Nazi Germany and the nature of hate. As the film hits theaters on a wave of Oscar buzz, Rotten Tomatoes editor Jacqueline Coley sat down for an extended interview with Waititi to talk about his vision for the film, working with kids, and why he chose to play this imaginary Hitler himself.

4. 呼朋唤友 随心所欲
Every great accomplishment begins with a small idea, something that sparks the imagination or inspires a flurry of creative impulses, but sometimes small ideas stay small ideas. They may get gussied up in the trappings of larger ideas, but they remain small ideas. That appears to be what happened with Countdown, a high-concept horror flick that asks and answers the question, What if there was a mobile phone app that could predict the exact moment of my death? Elizabeth Lail stars as Quinn, a young nurse who, along with her colleagues, downloads the titular app out of morbid curiosity after an unusual encounter with a patient and discovers, much to her chagrin, that she may only have days before her time is up. And what happens to those who attempt to side-step their digitally predestined fate? It still comes to pass, of course, albeit under spookier circumstances. Critics say Countdown is a derivative thriller that reinterprets familiar ideas into a just-different-enough hodgepodge of jump scares and unnecessary subplots in order to stretch its central conceit to feature length. That said, most also agree that Lail and co-star Jordan Calloway are both likable leads, and it s a fairly short run to the finish line, so if you re just looking to get the heart rate up for a little bit, it may do the trick.

It s been nearly two years since the second season of Westworld premiered to HBO and a lot has changed. When we last checked in with the series, which was created by Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan and inspired by Michael Crichton’s 1973 film of the same name, Dolores (Evan Rachel Wood) and Maeve (Thandie Newton), two robot characters who were initially programmed to bend at the whims of the park s uber-rich clientele, had become fully sentient with violent results.Blind with vengeful rage, Dolores went on a murderous rampage. Before ultimately escaping the confines of the Westworld theme park, the killer host pillaged The Forge, the supercomputer holding all of the guest data the Delos corporation had been secretly stealing.  She caused a flood, deleted a whole lot of those data pearls in the process, and installed her consciousness into the host replica of new Delos boss Charlotte Hale (Tessa Thompson) before heading into the Valley Beyond.(Photo by John P. Johnson/HBO)Things for former brothel owner Maeve went a different direction, entirely. After her glitch woke her up, the sentient host infiltrated the inner-workings of the park, enlisting Hector, Armistice and the rest of their outlaw gang, as well as Head of Narrative Design, Lee Sizemore,  to help in the search of her long lost daughter. Unfortunately for her, as she closed in on reuniting with the girl, Delores and Bernard (Jeffrey Wright) rained hell upon the park, leaving Maeve shot. As she bled out, she watched her daughter exit the park for greener digital pastures with Native American host Akecheta (Zahn McClarnon).Discovering they were just pawns in a greater reality out-of-their reach is ultimately what drove each character s journey after their awakening was complete. For Bernard, the right-hand to park-creator Dr. Robert Ford (Anthony Hopkins), his realization that he was a synthetic being this whole time — one who was created by Ford in the image of his former partner — was one of the show s big reveals in its first season. This twist (and there were many) led Bernard to enable Dolores on her bloody journey all while attempting to pick up his own mental pieces, while he fell into an identity crisis, of sorts.(Photo by John P. Johnson/HBO)The HBO series delved further the white hat vs. black hat morality play originally introduced in season 1. It also filled in the blanks regarding the political drama unfolding behind the scenes within Delos. Less-than-savory struggles lie behind the character motivations of Charlotte, Dr. Ford s tenacious young replacement, and Delos investor William (Jimmi Simpson) who evolved into the Man in Black (Ed Harris), the coldhearted gunslinger hell-bent on burning the whole park to the ground. The series, which puts the concepts of free will, corporate greed, and a towering god complex in a blender, gave viewers plenty of answers in the season 2 finale, only to lead us to many more questions once it all ended. Needless to say, ahead of its highly-anticipated return, which takes the story outside of the confines of the park and adds Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad) to the mix, expectations are running high. Does the new season live up to the hype? Here s what the critics have to say:SEASON 3 IS A SLICK-LOOKING CYBERPUNK REBOOT(Photo by John P. Johnson/HBO)Ironically, the best part of Westworld Season 3 might be those overwhelming visual tableaus: the spectacular shots of a copter floating over a metropolis, the romantic European vistas of Maeve’s WWII world, and even the intimate hell that Caleb is going through. Westworld doesn’t just try to show us a haunted vision of the future, but it immerses us in it. — Meghan O Keefe, DeciderTime has passed since the end of season 2, and we find Dolores dealing with her new life in the outside world. In Los Angeles, everything looks like Tesla s version of Blade Runner, with Cybertruck police cars carving up a clean, Japan-inspired city. — Jennifer Bisset, CNETIronically, the best part of Westworld Season 3 might be those overwhelming visual tableaus: the spectacular shots of a copter floating over a metropolis, the romantic European vistas of Maeve’s WWII world, and even the intimate hell that Caleb is going through. Westworld doesn’t just try to show us a haunted vision of the future, but it immerses us in it. — Meghan O Keefe, DeciderTHIS NEW COAT OF PAINT CAN T COVER UP SOME CLUNKY STORYTELLINGWestworld wants to generate another existential conversation in Season 3, but even as the show swaps settings and introduces new faces, the details that make it come to life are perfunctory. — Brandon Katz, ObserverAction scenes are slick and easy-to-track, but they’re also detached, lacking the gleeful turns and grand lines that punctuated similar thrills from previous seasons. Backstory that used to be unveiled with a flourish is delivered sans showmanship, which can be refreshing when the new intel doesn’t warrant a whole to-do, but only contributes further to the new season’s straightforward execution. — Ben Travers, IndieWirePerhaps the flatness of its new setting might have served, or might eventually serve in the season’s second half, as ironic counterpoint: The peculiarity of the robot uprising exists against a backdrop so flat and familiar as to make it all the more intriguing. But what tends to happen instead is that the flatness inflects every corner of the story and sucks away the vibrancy. — Daniel D Addario, Variety Westworld returns with the batteries charged in an energetic start.— Alberto Carlos, EspinofDOLORES IS A VENGEFUL ROBOT WORTH ROOTING FOR(Photo by John P. Johnson/HBO)Season 3 Dolores is a vast upgrade. She s pissed off, but not blindly ruthless. She s bent on giving humans what she thinks they deserve, but smart enough to know this world doesn t operate like Westworld did. This is the kind of Dolores she should have been all along: a victim you feel empathy for with a cause worth fighting for — she s seen the worst that humans can be and believes her kind is the next step in evolution. She s not a one-note horseman of the robo-apocalypse. — Tim Surette, TV GuideDolores has often been a difficult character to track thanks to her regular identity crises, veering between damsel-in-distress and utterly unsympathetic villain, but in the third season, she finally seems to have hit a pleasant and steady middle-ground. We don’t fully know Dolores’ endgame, but we do know the ruthlessness with which she’ll pursue it and the remarkable capabilities she possesses to see it through. — Haleigh Fouch, ColliderAARON PAUL S PERFORMANCE IS FINE(Photo by John P. Johnson/HBO)There’s still plenty to be confused about. Westworld is 100% back on its bullshit and, depending on how much you like your TV to be a rug-yanking crash course in skepticism, still presents beautiful illusion after beautiful illusion for you to doubt. — Jacob Oller, Paste MagazineAll of the standard questions Westworld brings up in viewers remain: Is this person real or a host? Is this something happening now, or a flashback or flash forward? What exactly is reality, anyway? If something feels real, and affects someone like a real trauma, does that mean it’s real even if it takes place in a virtual playground? — Ron Hogan, Den of GeekExpect the passions around “Westworld” to erupt once again when Season 3 arrives, confusion reigns and the series’ fans and detractors face off to defend their side. — Lorraine Ali, Los Angeles TimesWestworld season 3 premieres on Sunday, March 15 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on HBO.

This Week s Ketchup brings you another eight headlines from the world of film development news (those stories about what movies Hollywood is working on for you next), covering up-and-coming titles like The New Gods, A Quiet Place 2, and Disney s Snow White. This WEEK S TOP STORYROBERT PATTINSON CONFIRMED FOR THE BATMAN (Photo by Dee Cercone/Everett Collection)Two weeks ago, the news broke that Twilight Saga star Robert Pattinson was in talks with Warner Bros. to star in The Batman (6/25/2021). That news, however, was watered down slightly by various whoa nelly stories that suggested Warner Bros. was still considering other stars (Nicholas Hoult, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Armie Hammer) for the role in case Pattinson didn t ultimately sign on. Well, you can disregard all of those names now, because Variety has confirmed that Pattinson has indeed signed on with Warner Bros. to star in The Batman. Although no production start date has been announced yet, the studio is expected to start pre-production this summer (which suggests filming will start late this year or early 2020 at the absolutely latest). The Batman will be directed by Matt Reeves, who is coming off directing the two most recent Planet of the Apes movies. Although it hasn t yet been confirmed, the news also broke last week that the villains in The Batman may be Catwoman and the Penguin, suggesting echoes of 1992 s Batman Returns.Fresh Developments1. MIRROR, MIRROR ON THE WALL, WILL THE SPIDER-MAN DIRECTOR GET THE SNOW WHITE CALL?Aladdin is now in theaters and on top of the box office charts, The Lion King is coming this summer (7/19/2019), and both Mulan (3/27/2020) and Cruella (12/23/2020) are due next year. We re deep into Disney s ongoing slate of movies based on their classic animated films, and the number of truly popular films yet to be adapted is getting smaller every year. One of the remaining classics is 1937 s Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (Certified Fresh at 98%), Walt Disney s first animated feature film. Disney may have slowed down plans for a live action Snow White to separate their remake from Mirror Mirror and Snow White and the Huntsman, but those 2012 films are now seven years in the past. With that possibly in mind, Walt Disney Pictures is now developing their live action Snow White, and director Marc Webb (The Amazing Spider-Man, 500 Days of Summer) is in talks for the job. Screenwriter Erin Cressida Wilson (Secretary, The Girl on the Train) is in talks to adapt the Brothers Grimm fairy tale, which will incorporate new songs by La La Land songwriters Benj Pasek and Justin Paul.2. AUDIENCES WILL RETURN TO A QUIET PLACE TWO MONTHS EARLIER(Photo by Jonny Cournoyer/Paramount)When A Quiet Place was released on April 6, 2018, the thrilling trailers helped it attract a surprisingly big opening box office weekend of .2 million, which was almost three times its production budget. Paramount Pictures was quick to schedule a sequel for next May (5/15/2020), and the studio signed John Krasinski to return as director, once again working with his wife Emily Blunt. (Batman Begins star Cillian Murphy will also be co-starring in the sequel.) Paramount delivered more good news for A Quiet Place fans this week, as the studio has bumped the sequel up two months to March 20, 2020, which is just two weeks shy of two years after the first film. The A Quiet Place sequel is now scheduled for the week after The Invisible Man and Godzilla vs Kong (3/13/2020), and the week before Disney s Mulan (3/27/2020).3. BATMAN COMIC BOOK WRITER ADAPTING THE NEW GODS (Photo by Atsushi Nishijima/Paramount Pictures)Back in 2015, there was a period when Marvel Studios was talking to Ava DuVernay (Selma, A Wrinkle in Time) about possibly directing last year s Black Panther. She obviously didn t take the job (Ryan Coogler did), but within a month of its release, DuVernay landed a job at Warner Bros. to direct a movie based on DC Comics The New Gods. We haven t heard much about New Gods in the year since, but it s still in active development with the news this week that WB has hired comic book writer Tom King to adapt the last few decades of New Gods comics into a single movie. King s comic book work includes Mister Miracle (potentially one of DuVernay s New Gods) and DC s current weekly Batman series. The premise and cast of DuVernay s New Gods isn t yet known, but the director has Tweeted in the past that Big Barda (Mister Miracle s wife) is her favorite superhero.4. HARRISON FORD S TOP CHOICE TO REPLACE HIM AS INDIANA JONES IS NOBODY (Photo by Paramount Pictures courtesy Everett Collection)Director Steven Spielberg is currently filming his remake of West Side Story (12/18/2020), but he s still attached to direct the fifth Indiana Jones movie, which remains scheduled for July 9, 2021. That also happens to be four days before Harrison Ford s birthday, July 13, 2021, when he will turn 79. So it s extremely likely that Ford will not be returning for an Indiana Jones 6. Probably with that in mind, Ford was asked this week who he thinks should be cast as the next Indiana Jones, to which he replied, Nobody! Don’t you get it? I’m Indiana Jones. When I m gone, he s gone. It s easy. Chris Pratt (Jurassic World, Guardians of the Galaxy) has been mentioned in the past as a possible replacement, but Ford appeared to confuse his Chris P. movie stars, saying, This is a hell of a way to tell Chris Pine this. I m sorry, man. (Unless of course, Chris Pine from Star Trek has also been in talks for the role. Not impossible.)5. MGM KNOWS HOW TO SELL A CONTRADICTION: BOY GEORGE BIOPIC IN THE WORKS (Photo by Lee/Everett Collection)Following the phenomenal box office numbers of nearly a billion dollars (3 million globally) for last year s Bohemian Rhapsody, there is obviously a strong argument to be made that there is an audience thirsty for musical biopics driven by the right songs, the right personalities, and the right stories. Elton John is testing that theory this weekend as the executive producer of Rocketman (Certified Fresh at 90%), which tells John s own life story. Something else that Bohemian Rhapsody and Rocketman also have in common, besides just being musical biopics, is their subjects sexuality. MGM is now developing a musical biopic about the life of British singer Boy George of the 1980s pop group Culture Club, whose hits included Karma Chameleon, I ll Tumble 4 Ya, and Do You Really Want to Hurt Me? MGM s Boy George biopic will be written and directed by Sacha Gervasi, wh

Ghcxuf (Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, @ Marvel Studios)Critics and fans alike are loving Avengers: Endgame. The movie is Certified Fresh at 95% and made a cool .2 billion at the global box office in its first weekend. It could very well turn out to be the biggest movie ever – and one of the most beloved. The key to its success? Critics say it s all about giving the MCU s loyal fans what they want. Eric Eisenberg of Cinema Blend was typical in his assessment, calling Endgame,  A wonderful gift to all those who have spent the last decade-plus emotionally engaging with the lives and adventures of these characters.” It s stacked with f k yeah moments and delights, the best of which make callbacks to early films in the franchise. And one of those movies is more important than any other. So, hear us out: Endgame owes much of its success to that under-sung hero of the MCU, Avengers: Age of Ultron. While one of the least popular entries in the MCU, and the lowest-rated Avengers flick on the Tomatometer at 75% (which is still not bad!), Ultron deserves credit as the foundation on which the entire second half of the MCU was built. And we re about to make a spoiler-filled case as to why, breaking down the story beats and relationships that Ultron established and that Endgame would use to such great effect – so be warned if you ve not seen Endgame, Ultron, or both.Major spoilers for Avengers: Endgame follow. Hulk Taking Control of Both Sides? It Started With Ultron.(Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, @ Marvel Studios)Around the time of Age of Ultron, there was still hope at Marvel that they would be able to make a deal for the Hulk and start a string of Hulk-only movies. Universal still owned the rights to the character for all standalone films, but behind the scenes, there were talks. When it became clear that a deal was not going to be forthcoming, Marvel spread the planned events for a standalone Hulk film throughout Avengers: Age of Ultron, Thor: Ragnarok, and the Infinity War two-parter. That’s right, the seeds of the fantastic Hipster Hulk payoff in Endgame were first sewn in Ultron. Think back to the Hulk/Banner in Ultron; he’s held back from the team at times to make sure he doesn’t do too much damage. Then, after a wave of the finger from Scarlet Witch, he wreaks havoc. Throughout Ultron, Banner is always questioning whether the team needs a ‘code green.’ He knows the Hulk s a powerful weapon, but he s terrified that he s not in control. By Endgame, we ve finally seen the complete character arc from this struggle in Ultron, to the Hulk completely taking over in Thor: Ragnarok, to Banner s inability to summon the green guy in Avengers: Infinity War, to the eventual blend of the Hulk s might and Bruce s mind in the new movie. (The latest incarnation is a play on a storyline that first appeared in The Incredible Hulk #377, in which Banner finally has control of both the monster and his mind – adding hipster glasses with a huge cardigan is just a lovely bonus.)The Start of a Beautiful and Pivotal Relationship: Wanda and Vision, a.k.a. WandaVision.(Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, @ Marvel Studios)The WandaVision relationship, as well as their powers, would become crucial to the MCU and especially to the Infinity Saga. It is also central to two of the saga s biggest moments: it s Vision s death in Infinity War that breaks our hearts, and it s Wanda s moment of revenge and power in Endgame that gives us such great feels. And that all started with Ultron. From her first encounter with Vision in Age of Ultron, Wanda is drawn to his mind; even when we still didn t know if he was good or evil, her first words about him were, “I can read him… his mind. Ultron introduces Wanda and her brother to his creation in the final stages of completion and even before his birth, Vision s mind called out to her. Talk about a meet-cute.When we finally learn Thanos master plan to gather all the Infinity Stones, we realize quickly that Vision will be in danger. The Mind Stone is the origin of his powers – it s literally fused to his head using whatever tech stuff Shuri was talking about in Infinity War. That connection sets up what might be the Infinity Saga s ultimate and most painful sacrifice: Killing Vision in Infinity War as a last-ditch effort to thwart Thanos turns out to be a pointless and heartbreaking effort – with a twist of the Infinity Gauntlet, it is all undone. We watched them fall in love, beginning in Ultron, and witnessed their tragic end in Infinity War. When she appears in Endgame, summoning her powers in fury, it s a completely satisfying bookend to everything Ultron began.Who is worthy? THE PERFECT SETUP FOR CAP S BIG HAMMER MOMENT.In one of the best scenes in Age of Ultron, the Avengers pal around with a few drinks at an afterparty. What is played as an entertaining comedic break, with the various members trying to lift Thor’s hammer, Mjölnir, actually sets up one of the biggest moments of Endgame. Iron Man, War Machine, Hawkeye, and – comically – Bruce Banner all try to lift the hammer and prove themselves worthy. None are successful, but for one brief moment, Captain America tugs at Mjölnir, and it quivers. The movement wipes a confident smirk off Thor’s face and signals that maybe Steve Rogers could one day wield the hammer. So it’s no surprise in the finale of Endgame to see who is lifting Mjölnir. Thor even exclaims, “I knew it!” (It s actually another direct pull from the comics: Captain America is one of the few worthy enough to wield the hammer forged in the heart of a dying star – we re still getting goosebumps just thinking about it.)Clint Barton, Hawkeye, and the farm.According to Ultron director Joss Whedon, there were several creative differences between him and Marvel Studios during the filming of Age of Ultron, none more contentious than the debate over the trip to the farm to meet Clint’s family. Marvel brass were apparently not into giving Hawkeye a familial backstory – having seen Endgame, we re thankful they lost on that one. The broken, singularly focused, vigilante Ronin that Hawkeye becomes in Endgame doesn t have the same resonance if we haven t spent time with his family. (And what about that opening scene?!) The device of the farm is also used to further establish the closeness between Natasha and Hawkeye, as in Ultron we learn that she is the only one with prior knowledge of the farm and his family life. These quiet moments raise the emotional stakes of the fight we see between Clint and Natasha in Endgame, as they do battle over who will sacrifice themselves for the Soul Stone. Without the Ultron setup, those stakes would not be so high.Tony vs. Cap: A Civil War begins.Civil War may have been the first battle between the Avengers, but some early, quiet shots were fired in Ultron. The argument on the farm during which Steve scolds Tony for creating, and especially for not telling him about, Ultron, is one many will point back to as the start of their fracturing. Then there is the physical fight between Captain America and Iron Man that happens later in Ultron, while Tony tries to finish his Vision . Steve and Tony come to blows about it just before Thor harnesses lighting to finally birth Vision. The Russo brothers told us in our extended interview that the Avengers failed in Avengers: Infinity War because they were divided, and the cracks of that fatal divide first began to appear in Ultron. Even direct quotes from Age of Ultron reappear in Endgame with Tony repeating his warning, “We’ll lose – adding Steve’s reply of “We’ll lose together” is of little solace. That broken version of Tony, ripping his core from his chest, was perhaps even harder to watch than his heroic end.Tony, always trying to get ahead of things.(Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, @ Marvel Studios)It starts and stops with Tony. The whole plot of Ultron comes from one driving force: Tony’s fear of the next thing from space trying to annihilate the earth. That up there, he quips, pointing to the sky and referencing the alien invasion of New York. That s the endgame. And it was, in every sense of the word. Thanos does come to destroy the earth, and that threat is what the Avengers were created to stop. Tony, in creating Ultron, was trying to win a war before it started; during the wood cutting argument, Steve astutely reminds him, “Every time someone tries to win a war before it starts, people die.” Before the events of Ultron, Tony created Veronica just in case they ever lost control of The Hulk (or a lullaby didn’t work). The Hulkbuster back-up plan kind of worked. That drive to plan ahead, to be prepared, may have been a fatal flaw with Ultron, but it also allowed Tony to outsmart Thanos in Endgame. The glove Tony installs on his suit to steal the infinity stones is just that type of planning. He was reluctant to join the second fight and the visions of defeat he saw in Ultron still haunt him, but he was, in the end, able to use that fear to defeat their most formidable foe. It s a complete bookend to the character and his essential motivation.(Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, @ Marvel Studios)And there are so many smaller Ultron setups:Ragnarok: Heimdall first teases Ragnarok and the fact they will lose in Thor’s vision before he later heads to a cave to get more answers. Thor sees the Infinity Stones and the gauntlet for the first time. More breadcrumbs to our final battle.Avengers Assemble: The “Avengers Assemble” line that Captain America calls out in the final battle was first teased in Ultron. A near synonymous tag line for Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, it is a line comic book fans have been waiting to hear. We cut to credits before Cap could call it out in Ultron, but we finally get it in Endgame.Wakanda: In a quick scene with Ulysses Klaw, we first hear reference what would turn out to be the key destination in the highest-grossing superhero movie ever – before Endgame. Vibranium, Andy Serkis with a Wakandan tattoo, and the rest is history.(Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, @ Marvel Studios)Captain America Back With Carter: We’d have to guess it’s not a coincidence that Wanda’s visions sent Captain America back to Agent Carter and the 1940s. Throughout the series, his greatest regret is not being able to share a life with her, thus making his ending as an old man who stole time to get a life all the sweeter. Fine, I ll do it myself : We meet a winking and silent Thanos in The Avengers, and we first spy the Infinity Gauntlet in Thor’s Scarlet Witch vision. But it s not until Ultron s mid-credits stinger that we see our big baddie in full armor – voiced by Josh Brolin – snatching the gauntlet and saying, “Fine, I’ll do it myself.”(Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, @ Marvel Studios)The Avengers Facility: A small but noteworthy moment. The Avengers get a new home. The Avengers compound is basecamp going forward. 😈😈

Curses and miracles aligned over this Easter weekend as Hollywood awaits the flood of moviegoers headed to theaters next week for the conclusion of the Avengers saga. First things first, though, as one superhero is not done yet — even if he would be wise to fly away from the screeching phantom that challenged him this weekend.King of the Crop: Curse Opens on Top, But May Come In for a Soft Landing(Photo by New Line Cinema)Warner Bros.’ Conjuring Universe film, The Curse of La Llorona, opened to a very respectable .5 million. Not terribly well received after its screening at the SXSW film festival this March, the studio then decided to forego press screenings altogether, and it is sitting on a 32% Tomatometer score. That’s the weakest rating for a wide release horror film since last November’s The Possession of Hannah Grace (20%). Even The Prodigy got a 45%. La Llorona’s opening is well ahead other April horror entries like 2008’s Prom Night (.8 million), Scream 4 (.69), and last year’s Truth or Dare (.66). Those three films finished between million–44 million. It is also ahead of this month’s Pet Sematary, which began with .5 million and currently sits at .5 million, just ahead of the pace of White Noise, which finished with .38 million; less than Mary Lambert’s 1989 Pet Sematary (.46 million). But a potential million finish domestically for La Llorona would be solid for the million production. It is already over million worldwide.Rotten Returns: Penguins March to the Bottom of DisneyNature(Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)The DisneyNature films have done fairly well as far as documentaries go. Earth and Chimpanzee are the 6th and 7th highest-grossing docs of all-time, and Oceans, Bears, Monkey Kingdom, and African Cats are still all in the top 20. So they had to be hoping for better with the 90%-rated Penguins, given that March of the Penguins is the second-highest grossing documentary ever with .4 million. Disney’s film has managed just .2 million since opening on Wednesday. Even the weakest entry in the series, Born in China, made .6 million in its first five days. The Top 10 and Beyond: Captain Marvel Hits Milestone Just Before the Endgame(Photo by Marvel Studios)Shazam! dropped to second this weekend, but only with a 29% fall as it joins 15 films to make between 0 million–122 million in 17 days, seven of which are animated. Its .3 million third weekend is the fifth-best amongst them behind just Hitch, Wreck-It Ralph, Coco, and Happy Feet. Those four films grossed between 9 million–210 million, while the 11 films Shazam! beat grossed between 9 million–192 million. DC’s latest could be headed for somewhere in the 0 million range, That is clearly nothing compared to Captain Marvel, which appears to be getting the Black Panther treatment now, as fans want to make sure they are completely caught up for Endgame. It has reached the 0 million domestic mark, and at .098 million, it is the 25th highest-grossing film of all-time. Its 5.7% increase from last week to .1 million this weekend is the eighth-best seventh weekend ever.Another version of a superhero is on display in Breakthrough. Namely, The Almighty, as the power of prayer beats doctors in reviving a drowned boy. Over the weekend the 64%-rated film grossed .1 million, ranking it ahead of Soul Surfer and God’s Not Dead on the faith chart. That’s less than other pre-Easter releases like Heaven Is For Real (.5 million) and Miracles From Heaven (.8 million), each involving children, illness, and revival. Breakthrough has made .6 million since opening Wednesday.Dumbo finally hit 0 million on its 24th day and likely finishes somewhere between 0 million–120 million. That means a worldwide total somewhere in the 0 million range, which may be just enough to be the second-biggest bomb of 2019, leaving the top title to Paramount’s Wonder Park. Annapurna’s United Artists Releasing did no favors for Missing Link, which crash-landed on opening (despite a 90% critical rating). Audiences may have caught on to the critics singing its praises because the film dropped just 26% this weekend — the second smallest drop of the year after The Upside — but it has still only grossed .9 million.(Photo by @ Universal )Last week’s releases fell further down the chart. Little dropped 45 percent from second to fifth and has made million to date. Lionsgate’s Hellboy, though, is a domestic failure. It’s 67.8-percent drop is the third worst of 2019 for a wide release behind Replicas and The Beach Bum. Neil Marshall’s film has made less than Elektra did in its first 10 days; the 2005 film lost more than half its theaters in its third week. If that happens to Hellboy next week, then it may not even reach million. Guillermo del Toro’s Hellboy made .1 million in its opening weekend. Finally, Jordan Peele’s Us looks to be preparing for one more Top 10 stay next weekend. Currently on par in weekend five with X-Men Origins: Wolverine and Thor, it may settle in with a final gross between 9 million–181 million; ahead of Get Out’s 6 million. This Time Last Year: Audiences Chose Quiet Over Rampage(Photo by @ Paramount Pictures)A Quiet Place reclaimed the top spot at the box office, edging out Rampage in its second weekend by less than 0,000. I Feel Pretty ( millon) also took third place by less than 0,000 over challenger Super Troopers 2, which made nearly half of its total money this weekend. The Paula Patton thriller, Traffik, opened all the way back in ninth with just .94 million. The top 10 films grossed 6.60 million and averaged 60% on the Tomatometer. This week’s top 10 grossed an estimated .65 million and averaged 61% with critics. On the Vine: Avengers: Endgame Looking to Bust Some Records(Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, @ Marvel)The summer movie season once again begins in April and no one wants to get in the way of Avengers: Endgame. Eleven years in the making. Who lives? Who dies? All questions the fans want answered, but Disney is looking at others. Will Endgame best Infinity War’s all-time opening weekend of 7.6 million? (Likely.) Could it actually climb to 0 million by the end of Sunday? (Quite possibly.) Does it best Black Panther’s 0 million to become the highest-grossing Marvel film ever? (Could be.) Are the numbers of Avatar and Star Wars in any danger? (We’ll see.) But we will track its progress week-to-week right here. The Full Top 10: April 19-21The Curse of La Llorona (2019) 28% – .50 million (.50 million total)Shazam! (2019) 90% – .34 million (1.34 million total)Breakthrough (2019) 63% – .10 million (.60 million total)Captain Marvel (2019) 79% – .10 million (0.02 million total)Little (2019) 46% – .45 million (.38 million total)Dumbo (2019) 46% – .80 million (1.25 million total)Pet Sematary (2019) 57% – .85 million (.58 million total)Missing Link (2019) 88% – .36 million (.97 million total)Us (2019) 93% – .26 million (0.44 million total)Hellboy (2019) 18% – .88 million (.67 million total)
