cope.It Was a “Traditional” Disney Story in a Way No Other Pixar Movie Is(Photo by Buena Vista Pictures courtesy Everett Collection)These days, Pixar is celebrated for its truly innovative premises. What if the emotions in your head were personified, here to teach you a lesson about how sadness is good? What if humanity ruined the Earth and left a cute, largely silent robot behind to clean up? What if art deco superheroes fought against the struggles of marriage, and also maybe loved Ayn Rand? A Bug’s Life is not like that. In fact, it’s probably the most traditional Pixar movie when compared to Disney’s classic animated canon. The film, like so many of the classic Disney movies, was based on an old tale from the public domain — in this instance, the Aesop’s Fable about the ant and the grasshopper.Anybody who has watched The Little Mermaid and then gone and read the original Grimm’s Fairy Tale knows that Disney frequently makes major (and typically good) changes when adapting an old story. A Bug’s Life was no different, taking this fable of a lazy grasshopper and hardworking ant and spinning it into a new tale about individualism, make-believe actors becoming real-life heroes, and triumph over extortion. It was Pixar’s only real take on what had been Disney’s M.O. for decades, and while the studio’s creative ambitions would only grow greater, A Bug’s Life is worth remembering for being a singular Pixar reinterpretation. It Proved That Pixar Wasn’t a FlukeIf the worst thing A Bug’s Life has going for it is that it isn’t one of the greatest animated movies ever made from arguably the greatest animation studio of all time, then that’s a pretty good sophomore slump. After the success of Toy Story, Pixar, which had since become a public company, needed to deliver a success to keep the momentum going.“We felt the future of the studio was resting on it,” A Bug’s Life producer Darla K. Anderson recalled in that filmmaker’s roundtable. Had Pixar’s second movie been a total bust, Pixar might’ve been written-off as a one-hit wonder. Instead, A Bug’s Life was a critical and financial success — maybe not as good as Toy Story, but a sure sign that there were plenty more good things to come.Twenty years later, now that computer graphics have progressed so much, it’s easy to overlook the visual and technical leaps that A Bug’s Life Made. Compared to Toy Story, A Bug’s Life is much more complex. Animators needed to create entirely organic-looking worlds on a much bigger scale than Toy Story’s mostly bedroom settings. There were significantly more characters in A Bug’s Life than in the earlier film — heck, the ant colony alone dwarfs Toy Story’’s entire cast. Pixar also had to use or develop new animation techniques to handle light flickering through semi-transparent grass and the flickering flames of the finale. In other words, A Bug’s Life was no small feat, and that warrants a bit of celebration.A Bug s Life was released on November 25, 1998.manbetx手机版网页版登录另外,王者荣耀的发展太早。这类型的手游用户早就被王者荣耀收割完成了,而且英雄符文皮肤都有好几年的积累,不会轻易转过去英雄联盟手游。

Ryan Reynolds stars in Free Guy, a movie about a video game character who suddenly breaks from his expected monotony to reach his full potential. And as it turns out, it’s also a movie that breaks from expectations to reach its full potential. That’s the consensus from the surprisingly very positive reviews from the new action-comedy, which hits theaters on August 13.While familiar in its premise and the latest movie to capitalize on a studio’s willingness to mash up famous pop culture IP, Free Guy is said to be a lot of fun, with tons of action, laughs, and heart, plus a bunch of surprises that critics aren’t divulging. The only place where reviews really disagree, though, is in where they land on Taika Waititi’s scene-chewing villainous role. Here’s what critics are saying about Free Guy:Is Free Guy more than it seems? “Free Guy is way better than you may have been expecting — in fact, it’s absolutely joyful.” Germain Lussier, io9.com“A very pleasant surprise.” Mark Cassidy, ComicBookMovie.com“Free Guy is surprisingly far more complex than expected.” Robert Daniels, The Playlist“I never expected to see a film that hilariously deals with philosophical conundrums the way The Good Place used to.” Sherin Nicole, idobi.com“One of the summer’s bigger surprises.” Joey Magidson, Awards RadarHow does it compare to other video game movies?“The best-ever video-game movie.” Ian Sandwell, Digital Spy“One of the best video game movies that Hollywood has managed to churn out.” Hoai-Tran Bui, Slashfilm“[One] of the best video game-themed movies in recent memory.” Germain Lussier, io9.com(Photo by 20th Century Studios)Will it appeal to gamers?“It actually understands what makes video games tick.” Hoai-Tran Bui, Slashfilm“There are numerous Easter eggs for gamers to find in the background details and, crucially, it s done with love for the culture, rather than any cynicism.” Ian Sandwell, Digital Spy“Very clearly a movie aimed at young gamers… and for a film aimed at gamers, it seems pretty oblivious to what that audience actually wants in a game.” Rob Hunter, Film School Rejects“When branching off the core story and trying to bring in certain elements, gamers may be less impressed with some of the gag choices.” Aaron Neuwirth, We Live EntertainmentWhat about non-gamers?“While it’s very respectful and true to gaming culture, it’s one of those movies that almost anyone could watch and find enjoyment in.” Germain Lussier, io9.com“If you’re not into video games, I wouldn’t say that’s a hurdle for Free Guy any more than not being into Lego is a hurdle for The Lego Movie.” Matt Goldberg, Collider“Free Guy is fun and visually stunning enough to hold the interest of anyone looking for a literal escape to something far away from the real world.” Catherine Springer, AwardsWatch“Free Guy is nothing if not a movie that wins you over in spite of your better judgment and best defenses.” David Ehrlich, IndieWire(Photo by 20th Century Studios)How is the action?“The film is loaded with wall-to-wall action, albeit the cartoonish kind that makes this solid family entertainment.” Chris Bumbray, JoBlo“The action is used not just to entertain, but to develop characters, which in turn endears them to the audience.” Germain Lussier, io9.comAnd the visuals?“The world-building is incredible… The set design and VFX are impeccable and engaging.” Yolanda Machado, Nerdist“They’re just flashy enough to make the world of Free City seem both fun to live in and kind of real.” Germain Lussier, io9.comWhat about the script?“Incredibly uplifting.” Matt Goldberg, Collider“However predictable, the journey to get there makes up for it by being akin to a rocket ship.” Germain Lussier, io9.com“So much energy has been poured into the creation of Free City that the plot suffered as a result.”  Ian Sandwell, Digital Spy“If it sounds complicated, plot-wise, that s because it is, overly so, to the point that the film has to stop a couple of times to explain itself to some extent, although certain plot points remain unexplained, perhaps because the credited screenwriters could not remember the narrative point and/or lost the cocktail napkin on which the script was originally jotted down upon.” Peter Martin, Screen Anarchy“Free Guy is the unfortunate example that fails to add anything new… It neglects to build character and narrative of its own.” Rob Hunter, Film School Rejects(Photo by 20th Century Studios)Is it funny?“One of the funniest movies of the year.” Robert Daniels, The Playlist“Hilarious thanks to a few laugh-out-loud surprises courtesy of the merger between 20th Century Studios and the Walt Disney Company.” Joey Morona, Cleveland Plain DealerBut does it have heart?“It really believes in itself…there’s a real, beating heart beneath all that plastic packaging of Free Guy” Hoai-Tran Bui, Slashfilm“Will make your heart swell and burst.” Joey Morona, Cleveland Plain DealerDoes the r

6.93.4 8月喜迎Shazam! has wowed critics with its heart and laughs, and surprised comic-book fans with its faithfulness to the character — who once went by a name now owned by Marvel — his history, and the more recent revisions made in the 21st Century. But as it is a modern era superhero film, there are a number of easter eggs and hooks that might leave those less versed in Billy Batson history a little confused. So here’s a handy guide to a few of the head-scratchers from Shazam! – including that caterpillar in the post-credits stinger!Warning: Major spoilers ahead.Who Is Mr. Mind?(Photo by DC Comics, Shazam! 3)When young Sivana (Ethan Pugiotto) first arrives at the Rock of Eternity, the Wizard’s (Djimon Hounsou) dwelling, he sees a jar containing a caterpillar. Nothing more is said of it throughout the film until we see the jar has been destroyed sometime later. In the mid-credit stinger, the caterpillar appears in Sivana’s (Mark Strong) prison cell wearing a speaker and suggesting they can do great things together. In the comics, the creature is known as Mr. Mind and as the teaser heavily implies, he will be Billy’s (Asher Angel) opponent in Shazam! 2. First appearing in 1943’s Captain Marvel Adventures #26, the character was created by principal Captain Marvel creator C.C. Beck and writer Otto Binder. When the Golden Age Captain Marvel first tussled with Mr. Mind, he was a caterpillar-like worm with mental faculties beyond those of mortal men. He was also telepathic and could spin nearly indestructible silk webbing. And as seen in the film, he used a “talk box” slung around his neck to amplify his voice into the human range of perception. He was also the leader of the Monster Society of Evil, a group of, well, evil monsters dedicated to destruction and villainy in a very earnest Golden Age kind of way. A perfect set of opponents for Billy and his growing Shazam Family — more on them in a bit.Over the years, his origins evolved. He eventually claimed to be an alien worm, which later writers made canon by revealing Venus as his planet of origin. He also became closely tied to Sivana, who gave the telepathic creature its name. With formidable abilities and an inferiority complex well in excess of his physical form, he should prove a worthy opponent for Shazam (Zachary Levi). Doubly so if he and Sivana organize the Monster Society.Where’s Black Adam?(Photo by Robert Viglasky / © MGM)For over a decade, the Shazam! project was overshadowed by a potential spin-off, the Black Adam film starring Dwayne Johnson. The concept first came to light when the actor asked his fans if he should play Shazam. They responded with the overwhelming suggestion he was better suited to play the character’s best enemy, Black Adam. He has been attached to a film starring the character ever since.Created by Beck and Bill Parker in 1945’s The Marvel Family #1 — his one Golden Age appearance — much of Black Adam s history was outlined decades later by writer and artist Jerry Ordway. Teth-Adam was the son of Egyptian Pharaoh Ramses II (who in real life famously sired over 100 children). The Wizard Shazam was the Pharaoh’s high priest at the time and, looking for a successor even then, thought Teth-Adam would be the perfect candidate. But Adam was double crossed by the Wizard’s daughter Blaze. Instead of inheriting the Wizard’s powers, he derived his abilities from the Egyptian gods Shu, Heru, Amon, Zehuti, Aton, and Mehen.Nonetheless, he proved an able hero for the nation. But his duties kept him away from his family, who were all eventually killed when a power-mad priest swept through his home state of Kahndaq.Believing Blaze’s corruption to be absolute, the Wizard eventually trapped Adam’s soul in a scarab and entombed his corpse in a sarcophagus where he referred to his former apprentice as “Khem-Adam,” or “Black Adam. When Adam eventually escaped, he extended his animosity toward the Wizard to the entirety of the Marvel – or Shazam – Family. While the details might be different — and contain a number of DC Comics characters like Blaze — the key elements of Black Adam’s Golden Age origin remain the same. The Wizard believed him to be a worthy successor and bestowed upon him the powers of Shazam. Adam was corrupted by the power, forcing the Wizard to banish him. If this sounds familiar, it is because it is the story the Wizard tells the young Sivana in the opening moments of the film. Black Adam even makes a cameo appearance as the Wizard conjures up images of his first pupil. The entire Black Adam misadventure sets up the whole reason why the Wizard spends millennia looking for someone with the “purity” of Billy Batson. So while not a key player in the first film, the character is ultimately important to the story director David Sandberg appears to be telling. But considering the Mr. Mind stinger, it seems as though Black Adam and Billy will not meet until the third film. In the interval, that Black Adam movie will presumably be made. According to Johnson’s recent Instagram post congratulating Shazam! on its success, he said production will begin “in about a year.”What Is The Shazam Family?(Photo by @ Warner Bros. Pictures)OK, we’ve mentioned “the Shazam Family” once or twice, and that term is important and it is the name of the group of heroes Billy creates toward the end of the film. And as the movie went out of its way to discuss, names are important. So much so, you might be wondering why they do not receive proper names of their own.In the Golden Age, Billy was ultimately joined by three other heroes deriving their powers from the Wizard: Captain Marvel Jr, Mary Marvel, and Uncle Marvel. A few others also joined the crusade with variations of the Marvel theme as The Marvel Family. Each was a person Billy knew in his civilian life, with Mary presented as Billy’s sister. But as we’ve discussed at length before, the “Captain Marvel” trademark was abandoned when Fawcett Comics agreed to stop publishing comics based on the character or his family in 1953 after a protracted legal case initiated by DC Comics. Marvel Comics eventually scooped up the trademark, so when DC bought the characters from Fawcett, they began to use the word “Shazam” in place of Marvel. Which means the Marvel Family is now “the Shazam Family.”And as seen in the film, the group is composed of Mary Bromfield (Grace Fulton), Freddy Freeman (Jack Dylan Grazer), Darla Dudley (Faithe Herman), Pedro Peña (Jovan Armand), and Eugene Choi (Ian Chen) — all of Billy’s new foster siblings in a story point which ties together one of the movie’s great themes about finding home. It also originates from a revision to the Shazam Family orchestrated by writer Geoff Johns, who created Darla, Pedro, and Eugene with artist Gary Frank. Their appearances and characterizations in the film are taken almost directly from the Johns/Frank stories – right down to their lack of proper superhero names.Which may leave you wondering about Freddy and Mary. As both originate from the Golden Age, they had proper names, Mary was the Mary Marvel mentioned before while Freddy had the curious title of Captain Marvel Jr. It may look strange to modern eyes, but it made perfect sense at the time. Sadly, as both names prominently feature Marvel, it remains to be seen if Freddy and Mary will ever get new, proper hero monikers. Much like Billy in the first film, that issue of identity could form part of their story in the sequel. Why Didn’t We See Superman’s Face?(Photo by @ Warner Bros. Pictures)Shazam! functions as a perfectly solid film without big ties to the Justice League, but the film concludes with a reminder that some sort of unified DC world still exists. To help Freddy with the kids teasing him at school, Shazam (Zachary Levi) comes round with a friend: the Man of Steel. But the scene is awkwardly shot. Superman’s head is cutoff throughout and the John Williams theme appears in lieu of the character saying any sort of iconic phrase or cutesy remark. At one time, Henry Cavill was supposed to film a cameo scene for the film — though everyone evolved denied the scene’s existence until its debut at the special preview screenings in March — but scheduling reportedly kept the actor out of the blue suit. It is unclear if facial hair was part of the problem this time.It only adds fuel to the speculation about Cavill’s Superman future. Some say it is already over while Cavill’s only comment on the matter was a video in which he brandished a Superman action figure featuring his likeness. It remains to be seen what will become of the cinematic Superman, but it forms a real life cliffhanger almost as intriguing as Mr. Mind’s prison cell appearance.Like this? This Week s Ketchup brings you more headlines from the world of film development news, covering such titles as Black Adam, Fletch, and Wishbone. This WEEK S TOP STORYCHRIS EVANS AND RYAN GOSLING TO STAR IN NETFLIX MOVIE BY THE RUSSO BROTHERS(Photo by Elizabeth Goodenough, Jef Hernandez/Everett Collection)It was just in 2017 that Netflix shocked many pundits with the news that they were investing over 0 million (which eventually became something more like 0 to 0 million) on Martin Scorsese s ambitious mob hitman biopic The Irishman (Certified Fresh at 96%). Perhaps even more surprisingly, The Irishman did not receive a wide release in theaters, but was still seen as a success. On the heels of that success, Netflix announced plans this week to break their own record with a spy action-thriller called The Gray Man, which will have a production budget north of 0 million. Chris Evans (Marvel s Captain America) and Ryan Gosling will star in The Gray Man, which will be adapted from the novel of the same name by screenwriter Joe Russo and directed by Russo and his brother Anthony Russo, who are best known for the Marvel movies Captain America: Civil War (Certified Fresh at 91%), Avengers: Infinity War (Certified Fresh aty 85%), and Avengers: Endgame (Certified Fresh at 94%). As the source novel is the first in a successful series, Netflix reportedly hopes to start a new action franchise comparable to James Bond. The Gray Man will tell the story of a deadly cat-and-mouse came as one assassin (Gosling) called The Gray Man is hunted down across the world by another agent (Chris Evans). It s worth noting, since the Russo Brothers are so tied to comic book movies, that Netflix s The Gray Man has no connection to the DC Comics character of the same name. It s also worth noting that Joe Russo is the writer of the Netflix original film Extraction, which starred the MCU s Chris Hemsworth and became the streaming service s most-watched movie of all time when it premiered in late April.Other Top Headlines1. TO ALL THE BOYS NOAH CENTINEO JOINS DWAYNE JOHNSON S BLACK ADAM(Photo by ©Netflix)DC Comics Justice Society of America is a super team that some fans are just now discovering because of Stargirl on The CW, but it actually has a history dating back to the early 1940s as the very first comic book superhero team ever. Some JSA members are tricky to comprehend because of those 80 years of continuity, but one of them is the original Atom (who was short but not to be confused with the Atoms who can shrink), who was then followed by his super-strong godson (now called Atom Smasher). There have been rumors before this week that Dwayne Johnson s upcoming Black Adam (12/22/2021) will, in addition to being a Shazam! spinoff, also feature some members of the Justice Society of America, and this week, Atom Smasher became the first to be confirmed. The actor joining Black Adam will be Noah Centineo, who is probably currently best known for his roles in a few different Netflix projects, including To All the Boys I ve Loved Before, Sierra Burgess is a Loser, and The Perfect Date. When production of Black Adam starts off in Georgia in early 2021, the film will be directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, who also directed Johnson in Disney s upcoming theme park attraction adaptation Jungle Cruise (6/20/2021).2. JON HAMM TO STAR IN REBOOT OF CHEVY CHASE COMEDY FLETCH (Photo by Elizabeth Goodenough/Everett Collection)Hollywood obviously has a decades-long obsession with remaking films of yesteryear (they ve actually been remaking movies since 1918), but the decade that has seemingly inspired the most remakes is the 1980s. Although he was quickly followed by stars like John Belushi, Dan Aykroyd, and Eddie Murphy, the first Saturday Night Live star to leave the show for a movie career was Chevy Chase, and in 1985, he starred in the journalist comedy Fletch (Fresh at 77%), which was then followed in 1989 by the sequel Fletch Lives (Rotten at 37%). Director Kevin Smith has long wanted to reboot the franchise with a project called Fletch Won, starring Jason Lee (TV s My Name is Earl), but that obviously never happened. Instead, the actor who is now attached to star in the Fletch reboot, based on the eleven original novels by Gregory McDonald, is Jon Hamm. The new Fletch will be directed by Greg Mottola (Superbad, Adventureland), who previously worked with Hamm on the made-for-HBO movie Clear History (Fresh at 61%). You can read more about Jon Hamm s other upcoming projects in this piece.3. PETER FARRELLY IS PRODUCING A WISHBONE MOVIE(Photo by ©Big Feats! Entertainment courtesy Everett Collection)Although some genres are still struggling in the movies compared to where they used to be (romantic comedies, westerns, etc), Hollywood appears to be content with the results they get from dog movies. (Harrison Ford s Call of the Wild has been described as a box office bomb, but it also had to deal with the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic.) One of the upcoming dog movies is the adaptation of the animated PBS series Clifford the Big Red Dog (11/13/2020 ), and this week, another canine PBS show is getting its own movie. Wishbone was a live-action show that ran on PBS from 1995 to 1997 in which Wishbone the dog taking on the personas of various literary characters each week, and now Green Book (Certified Fresh at 78%) director Peter Farrelly is attached to produce the Wishbone movie. As long as we re on the subject, another dog movie in active development that was announced earlier this year is Arthur the King, starring Mark Wahlberg.4. THE OLD GUARD DIRECTOR GINA PRINCE-BYTHEWOOD TEAMS UP WITH VIOLA DAVIS FOR THE WOMAN KING (Photo by 20th Century Fox courtesy Everett Collection, Jason Mendez/Everett Collection)You may recall that we almost got a Marvel Comics adaptation called Silver Black (about Silver Sable and Black Cat), which was once scheduled for February 8, 2019. That film was to have been directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood (Love and Basketball, The Secret Life of Bees), who instead moved to Netflix where she directed their recent action movie The Old Guard (Certified Fresh at 81%). It appears that the good will from The Old Guard has resulted in a pretty quick benefit for Prince-Bythewood, because she has already set up an ambitious period drama at TriStar Pictures called The Woman King. Viola Davis will star in The Woman King as Nanisca, a general of an all-female military unit in the Kingdom of Dahomey, an African nation that once existed in the area that is now Benin. The other lead role in The Woman King will be Nanisca s daughter, Nawi, who reportedly was almost played by Lupita Nyong o. In related news, Charlize Theron is already talking about possible sequel plans for The Old Guard.5. HENRY GOLDING TO VOICE LEAD IN CHINESE ZODIAC-INSPIRED THE TIGER S APPRENTICE(Photo by Sanja Bucko/©Warner Bros. Pictures)Some of this year s animated features ended up releasing (or will be released) on Video on Demand due to widespread theater closures (Trolls World Tour, Scoob!, The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run in 2021), but Hollywood appears to be otherwise committing to keeping other future animated movies in theaters (when the world goes back to having any movies released). One of those companies is Paramount Animation, who is continuing development on a project called The Tiger s Apprentice, which will be inspired by elements of the Chinse Zodiac. We can now report that the lead character, a talking tiger, will be voiced by Henry Golding, who first came to attention as the male lead in the 2018 romantic comedy Crazy Rich Asians. Golding s next big movie role will be as Snake Eyes (10/23/2020), in a spinoff movie for the popular G.I. Joe character.6. IS JENNIFER GREY MAKING A DIRTY DANCING SEQUEL SET IN THE 1990S?(Photo by (c)Vestron Pictures courtesy Everett Collection)For the most part, movie rumors don t get covered by major souces like Variety and Deadline, which is basically where we draw the line between rumors and confirmed news stories to begin with. This week, however, both of those sources ran with a story that is still firmly being described as a rumor. Reportedly, Dirty Dancing (Fresh at 69%) and Ferris Bueller s Day Off star Jennifer Grey is partnering with Lionsgate to produce an unique dance movie which she will star in and produce. The mystery project, which is also set in the 1990s, is rumored to possibly be a sequel to Dirty Dancing. If true, Grey would presumably be playing the 40-something older version of Baby from Dirty Dancing, but it s anyone s guess what that character might be doing 30 years later after that one memorable summer in the Catskills in 1963. We should also point out that Dirty Dancing already had a re-imagining in 2004 with Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights (Rotten at 23%), and a TV movie remake in 2017 (Rotten at 19%).7. RIVERDALE STAR KJ APA TO HEADLINE MICHAEL BAY S PANDEMIC THRILLER (Photo by Jack Rowand/©The CW)Amidst all of the speculation about how most Hollywood productions will get going again, we ve also been hearing about producer Michael Bay s project called Songbird, which is inspired by the COVID-19 pandemic we re all currently living in. Set two years in the future, Songbird will be told through the eyes of the characters, and we now know that the two leads will be KJ Apa (Archie on TV s Riverdale) and Sofia Carson, one of the stars of Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists. Filming of Songbird reportedly started on location in Los Angeles on Wednesday. Apa will play an essential worker who is able to deliver to people, including his girlfriend (Carson), due to his having a rare immunity to the disease. Demi Moore will also have a supporting role.8. JEAN SMART TO STAR IN LATEST FROM TATE TAYLOR(Photo by Jason Mendez/Everett Collection)Director Tate Taylor is probably best known for his frequent collaborations with actress Octavia Spencer (like The Help and the thriller Ma), but he s also done movies like The Girl on the Train with other lead actresses. For his next movie, Taylor has recruited veteran character actor Jean Smart, who s coming off her recent supporting role in HBO s Watchmen mini-series (playing the same Silk Spectre character depicted in the 2009 movie by Malin Akerman). Jean Smart will be starring in the movie, called Miss Macy, as an eccentric woman who becomes a mentor to a young girl. The screenplay was adapted by screnwriter Beth Henley (Crimes of the Heart, Nobody s Fool). Miss Macy will be produced by Amblin Partners, the production company that spun out from Steven Spielberg s DreamWorks Pictures, and which has recently produced 1917, Dark Waters, First Man, and Ready Player One.9. UNIVERSAL S CLASSIC MONSTERS FRANCHISE WILL INCLUDE A KIDS MOVIE (Photo by ©TriStar Pictures courtesy Everett Collection)Univeral Pictures previous plan for a Dark Universe built around reboots of their Universal Classic Monsters famously fell apart in 2017 following the disappointing box office for Tom Cruise s The Mummy, but the studio did not give up on the idea of reboots. Their new strategy paid off this year, just before the pandemic fully hit, with The Invisible Man (Certified Fresh at 91%), which was both a box office and critical hit. Other classic monsters projects Universal now has in the works include a remake of The Wolfman (starring Ryan Gosling) and a project called Dark Army from director Paul Feig (we don t yet know what that one s about). We can also add to the list a family-friendly movie called Little Monsters from the director of Toy Story 4, which will reportedly feature various characters from Universal s monster roster. That concept has sort of already been done a few times, including movies like The Monster Squad and Adam Sandler s animated Hotel Transylvania franchise, but the difference here is Universal Pictures official stamp of approval (Hotel Transylvania, for example, is a Sony Pictures franchise).

ive Pepsi Super Bowl ads. The 28-day shoot wrapped without incident, and seven months later Macgruber was released into 2,551 theater screens, only for critics and audiences to react as if MacGruber had personally upper-decked their toilets. Critics throat-ripped the film, which ended up with a Rotten 48% on the Tomatometer, and audiences proved to be as stingy as MacGruber himself, resulting in a million worldwide box office and a theatrical run of about three weeks.Ten years later, the film has built an audience of die-hard fans who embrace MacGruber’s mission to stop villain Dieter Von Cunth (Val Kilmer) from destroying Washington D.C. The once maligned screenplay by Forte and John Solomon is now appreciated for its flipping of action movie tropes and its borderline psychopathic dedication to making MacGruber as horrible as possible while still somehow making him likable. The film looks like a million dollar movie because of the inspired work by cinematographer Brandon Trost and production designer Robb Wilson King, and the assured direction by Taccone, who was making his feature debut, is so focused and fearless that it has to be appreciated (his drunk DVD commentary is pretty epic, too).As MacGruber celebrates 10 years of polarizing audiences, we decided to look back at what makes it such a beloved cult classic.ITS BOX OFFICE FAILURE WASN T SURPRISING, BUT NEITHER IS ITS CULT STATUS(Photo by Greg Peters/©Universal courtesy Everett Collection)Looking back at MacGruber now, Taccone, Forte, and Solomon couldn’t have believed that their hilariously aggressive R-rated comedy would be as successful as other SNL-based films like Wayne’s World or The Blues Brothers. They were asking summer movie audiences to embrace a profane movie best suited for midnight screenings and home viewings courtesy of the cool friend who let you borrow the DVD. It didn’t feature any A-list stars, it earned poor critical and audience (C- Cinemascore) reviews, and it was sandwiched between 0+ million earners Iron Man 2, Shrek Forever After, Sex and the City 2, and Robin Hood.MacGruber also features one of the most unlikable, insecure, and chauvinistic protagonists which was the joke ever put on screen. Unsuspecting audiences expecting an SNL farce were treated to moments like MacGruber urinating on the charred corpse of his nemesis and sex scenes punctuated by grunting and sweating with pliers and a ghost. These rough edges chased off the majority of the film s viewers but were embraced by a loyal audience who were able to get on the film’s wavelength. Will Forte’s MacGruber follows in the footsteps of other oddball cult characters like Jack Burton (Big Trouble in Little China), The Dude (The Big Lebowski), and Ash Williams (particularly in Army of Darkness), who initially threw audiences for a loop but became fan favorites years later when people began to realize how amazing they were. Between its disappointing box office results, middling Tomatometer score, and divisive comic sensibilities, MacGruber is the perfect example of a cult classic.WILL FORTE WAS 100% COMMITTED TO THE ROLEThere’s a moment in MacGruber when his teammates Vicki Gloria St. Elmo (Kristen Wiig) and Lt. Dixon Piper (Ryan Phillippe) are being shot at by mercenaries, and a distraction is necessary. Rising to the occasion, MacGruber pulls down his pants, shoves a stalk of celery in his posterior (Forte’s mom was on set that day), and prances around to draw attention away from his partners. His plan works, the bad guys are wiped out by Piper, and MacGruber takes credit for the kills (classic MacGruber). What makes the scene work is that there’s no winking at the camera or goofy caricature; Forte plays MacGruber totally straight. It s this commitment that allows him to pull off the kind of moment when MacGruber explains exactly how far he s willing to go to enlist Lt. Piper s help. You believe his desperation, hubris, and sadness, and that s what makes him unique. Will Forte fully inhabits the 54-year old character (someone did the math), who has no problem crying, pleading, or getting naked in a cemetery to have loud sex with the ghost of his wife. Forte somehow finds a way to make MacGruber nuanced enough for us not to hate him, but also not quite likable enough for us to admire him. The guy is a complete idiot who uses his teammates as human shields, and he doesn’t understand why Von Cunth his former best friend hates him after he stole his fiancée and convinced her to abort his child (pretty dark for an SNL movie, right?). Despite all of that, MacGruber actually gets things done (albeit usually in a roundabout or incorrect way); he rips throats, defuses bombs, and gets revenge on KFBR2392 (Forte actually wrote out all of the KFBR2392 doodles in his notebook).Forte does everything in his power to make the character look bad onscreen, and we appreciate that effort. It takes someone who is committed to the role and doesn’t mind looking stupid in the process, which is admirable in its own way and frequently priceless in comedy.DIRECTOR JORMA TACCONE AND WRITERS WILL FORTE AND JOHN SOLOMON HAD FREE REIN TO DO WHAT THEY WANTED Our budget was not huge, and as a result of that, we were kind of given free rein to do whatever the hell we wanted to do, which was really exciting.   Will Forte,  A.V. Club, 2010One benefit of a miniscule budget (for a modern-day, wide-release film) is that there aren’t many studio notes to consider or nervous executives lingering around. Nowadays, million is probably the budget for a Marvel movie’s craft services alone, and since Taccone and crew were able to stay on schedule and complete each day’s shot list, they further avoided more eyes on the project. They took that freedom and created an action film with moments so twisted, you don’t know if you should laugh. MacGruber’s monologue about how he met his deceased wife is jaw-dropping, and it’s told in such a matter-of-fact way that it takes a moment for the joke to register. Even Ryan Phillippe’s disgust is so subtle that it doesn’t immediately clue you in to the fact that it s supposed to be funny. That’s the occasional brilliance of MacGruber. The finale of the film sees Mac engaging in a super violent confrontation with Von Cunth. At first, MacGruber is only too eager as he has been for the entire film to cut off Von Cunth’s penis and shove it down his mouth. But when Mac realizes the appendage in question was blown off in an explosion he himself failed to prevent, he pushes Von Cunth off a cliff, shoots him with a machine gun on the way down, launches a grenade at his lifeless body, and finally urinates on the flaming corpse. The overkill is exceptional, and even though it’s playing on over-the-top kills in prior action films, the scene is edited so straight that it gives viewers zero catharsis in regards to the villain dying. Taccone and Forte ask the viewer to accept an awful lot of awfulness and doesn t apologize for it, because MacGruber the rare film that really goes for it, consequences be damned.IT’S A PERFECT SPOOF OF BOMBASTIC 1980s ACTION FILMS“The Legendary MacGruber. Former Navy SEAL, Army Ranger, and Green Beret. Served six tours in Desert Storm, four in Bosnia, three each in Angola, Somalia, Mozambique, Nicaragua, and Sierra Leone. Recipient of 16 Purple Hearts, three Congressional Medals of Honor, seven Presidential Medals of Bravery, and starting tight end for the University of Texas, El Paso.” When we are first introduced to MacGruber, we learn that he faked his death and has been living in Rambo-esque isolation in Ecuador since his fiancée was blown up by Dieter Von Cunth on their wedding day. After Phillippe s Lt. Piper recalls MacGruber’s past achievements, a child disrespectfully steals MacGruber’s necklace and makes a fool out of him. For the next 85 minutes, the film pumps MacGruber up, only to promptly deflate his hero credentials each time.Taccone and Forte were inspired by Die Hard, Rambo: First Blood Part II, and Road House,  and they wrote MacGruber as an homage to them. They took the well-known tropes of those films the heroes are amazing lovers, brilliant with guns, and impossible to kill and flipped them on their heads. While MacGruber is occasionally successful (he literally can rip throats, remember), his lovemaking is sweaty and loud, he’s afraid of guns, and he rather enjoys having bullet holes in his body.In the end, MacGruber saves the day, but he blows up his first team of war heroes, uses his comrades as human shields, and puts his crew in dangerous situations that are so frightening they pee their pants. In other words, he’s far from a hero, despite his heroics, but that also makes him a rather effective parody of the action stars who preceded him.THE SUPPORTING CAST IS ACESAfter 10 years, the sight of Kristen Wiig disguised as MacGruber or the bearded hitman Hoss Bender is still hilarious. Wiig’s performance as capable agent and talented vocalist Vicki St. Elmo is an absolute delight. It’s an all-in performance that features her screaming loudly in coffee shops and dodging Will Forte’s sweat during their outrageous love scene. The brand of weird self-delusion that she brings to the film serves as the perfect complement to MacGruber s antics the two of them seem happily in sync discussing whether Vicki’s going to take a number one or two when she walks off to the bathroom. On the other hand, Ryan Phillippe’s performance as Lt. Dixon Piper is wonderfully straight-faced, and he’s at his best when he’s listening to MacGruber recall the shocking details of his history with Cunth, his body language subtly communicating the gradual horror that overcomes him. Val Kilmer is also perfectly cast as the pony-tailed Dieter Von Cunth, bringing balance to Forte s manic energy with his wry delivery and sarcasm. Powers Boothe adds dignity and gravitas to the role of Colonel Faith, and former WWE wrestler Chris Jericho offers a scene-stealing cameo as Frank Korver, a friend of MacGruber who loves hearing his dick jokes.MacGruber is the star of the show, of course, but without a supporting ensemble who understood the material, the movie couldn’t have worked. That’s why we hope the folks at NBCUniversal have the good sense to recruit the same cast for the MacGruber TV series co-written by and starring Forte that was announced earlier this year for the Peacock streaming service. That s right: Soon you ll be able to watch the clueless buffoon spout casually offensive lines and blow up his friends every week, and if done right, it could be a lot of fun.Where You Can Watch It NowFandangoNOW (rent/own), Amazon (rent/own), Google (rent/own), iTunes (rent/own), Vudu (rent/own)MacGruber was released on May 21, 2010.
