Few industries enjoy taking really, really long extended holiday vacations quite like Hollywood, and when we get to this time of the year, there s rarely much in the realm of movie development news to discuss. Last week, we covered the year s biggest Fresh news stories, and this week, we re looking at the ones we deemed most Rotten instead.JANUARY: KEVIN HART PASSES GO, WILL COLLECT (AT LEAST) 0, IN MONOPOLY(Photo by Warner Bros.)Kevin Hart s Tomatometer has been getting better in the last few years, starting with his partnership with Dwayne Johnson in Central Intelligence (which carried into their Jumanji movies), and including his voice role in Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie (Certified Fresh at 88%). Before 2016, however, his track record mostly carried a broad series of Rotten splotches, with only a few Fresh tomatoes, and most of those were for his comedy concert films. Hart had several new movies announced in 2019 (including Black Friday, Extreme Job, and remakes of Scrooged and Uptown Saturday Night), but it all started in January with the long-in-development board game adaptation of Monopoly. The idea of a movie based on the classic Monopoly board game has been kicking around for over a decade, including a time when Ridley Scott was attached, but the Monopoly movie we ll actually get sounds a drastic switch. Kevin Hart will star in Monopoly for Lionsgate and Hasbro, with his Ride Along director Tim Story also on board.FEBRUARY: BRAD PITT S ZOMBIE FIGHT ENDS WITH SCRAPPING OF WORLD WAR Z SEQUEL   (Photo by Jaap Buitendijk/Paramount Pictures)If you were a big fan of Brad Pitt and director Marc Foster s zombie movie World War Z, February brought some bad news. After years of near-starts and delays, Paramount Pictures finally, apparently definitively, pulled the plug on a World War Z sequel. Pre-production was reportedly already well underway for a six month shoot in Atlanta and other nations around the world, but that also meant the budget exploded to over 0 million, and that was the breaking point for Paramount. Technically, it sounds like World War Z might come back, even with a sequel, in the future, but if it does, it would be with a much lower budget, without Foster directing, and possibly without Brad Pitt as well. [Editor s note: an earlier version listed David Fincher as editor of World War Z. This has been corrected and we regret the error.]MARCH: DISNEY/FOX MERGER LEADS TO SHELVING OF PROMISING X-MEN PROJECTS (Photo by 20th Century Fox Film Corp.)In March, Disney finalized its .3 billion deal to acquire the entertainment assets of the Fox film and TV studios. The deal was widely applauded by Marvel Comics fans who are eager to see the X-Men and Fantastic Four characters and properties now available for Marvel Studios in their future movies (though probably not until after 2022). However, that also meant that some/many of the projects that Fox had been developing would be shelved, including X-Force, X-23, Kitty Pryde, and Madrox the Multiple Man. We ll never know what those movies might have been like, and it s definitely possible some would have been Rotten (given Fox s record on recent X-Men movies). They re good examples, however, of the wide scope of Marvel movies we would have gotten if Marvel and Sony also had Fox developing movies every year. How long will it take now for Marvel Studios to go deep enough into their catalog to greenlight movies like Kitty Pryde and Madrox the Multiple Man?APRIL: THE BAD MOMS MOMS TO GET THEIR OWN MOVIE(Photo by STX Entertainment)After Bad Moms earned 3 million globally in the summer of 2016, it was followed by the sequel A Bad Moms Christmas in 2017. That second film introduced grandmother characters played by Christine Baranski, Cheryl Hines, and Susan Sarandon, and in April, we learned that they re going to get their own movie called Bad Moms Moms. It s not yet known if Kristen Bell, Kathryn Hahn, and Mila Kunis will reprise their roles as well, or if the third movie might introduce the next set of older great-grandmas (who could then get their own movie called Bad Moms Moms Moms). Both Bad Moms and A Bad Moms Christmas earned Rotten Tomatometer scores at 58% and 30%, respectively.MAY: SONIC THE HEDGEHOG TRAILER BACKLASH SPARKS REDESIGN (Photo by @ Paramount Pictures)Some of the year s most Rotten stories represent missteps that were eventually corrected, but we are looking at these stories as they were at the time. In this case, Paramount appeared to get the message within the same week, but still, at the time, the reaction was very negative. After all, Paramount Pictures should ve seen this one coming. In April, the first Sonic the Hedgehog trailer debuted, and the collective fan backlash against Sonic s design was even louder this time. (The eyes are too small, the nose is at the wrong angle, and the teeth. Where to even begin on the teeth?) The Sonic the Hedgehog missteps were only accentuated by the timing of the trailer in the same week as the first Pokemon Detective Pikachu reviews, as that film has not one but dozens of video game characters that look pretty much exactly like they do in the games. The good news, however, is that Sonic the Hedgehog director Jeff Fowler quickly responded on Twitter, The message is loud and clear you aren t happy with the design you want changes. Those changes came later in the year as we got a new Sonic the Hedgehog trailer in which he did indeed look a lot more like he does in the games. Sonic the Hedgehog is now scheduled as a Valentine s release on 2/14/2020.JUNE: SECURITY CAMERAS TO BE HAUNTED AGAIN IN PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 7 (Photo by Paramount Pictures)It s now been over four years since 2015 s Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension earned the franchise s lowest box office to date, domestically earning one fifth less than the first film. The Paranormal Activity movies were also relatively affordable to produce, so it was probably inevitable that Paramount Pictures would want to start making them again. Producer Jason Blum (of Blumhouse Productions) is now developing Paranormal Activity 7 for Paramount, although the premise isn t yet known (though it seems obvious that it will probably be another found footage horror film). The Tomatometer scores for the last three films (24%, 39%, and 15%, respectively) don t offer much hope for the next installment, unfortunately. Since this news broke in June, Paramount has scheduled Paranormal Activity 7 for release on March 19, 2021, up against the second Tomb Raider movie starring Alicia Vikander, and the week before The Boss Baby 2.JULY: LOOK WHO S REMAKING LOOK WHO S TALKING(Photo by TriStar Pictures courtesy Everett Collection)One of the oddest examples of movies that ended up getting two sequels to justify it becoming a trilogy might arguably be 1989 s Look Who s Talking (Rotten at 59%), which was followed in 1990 by Look Who s Talking Too (Rotten at 14%), and in 1993 by Look Who s Talking Now (Rotten at 0%). John Travolta and Kirstie Alley starred in those movies about talking babies, and in the third movie, talking dogs. Despite those critical drubbings, Sony Pictures is now developing a Look Who s Talking reboot to be written and directed by Jeremy Garelick, whose 2015 comedy The Wedding Ringer earned a Rotten score at 27%. It s not yet known if Bruce Willis or any of the other voice actors might return for the reboot (but they probably won t).
In 2018, in the lead-up to the release of Avengers: Infinity War, Rotten Tomatoes sat down for an extended interview with Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, in which he gave us a complete oral history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s first three phases. This week, as Marvel gets ready to release its first film into theaters in more than two years – the last being the Phase Three-capping Spider-Man: Far From Home – Feige again sat down with us for an exclusive extended chat, this time to reflect on the end of the Infinity Saga, the studio’s move into streaming limited series, and to preview some of the most anticipated titles coming up in a jam-packed Phase Four, from Chloé Zhao’s Eternals to Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.Recommended: Kevin Feige s Oral History of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Phases 1-3At lot had changed since we last spoke. For starters, the COVID-19 pandemic wreaked havoc on Marvel Studios’ release calendar (Black Widow was delayed more than a year) and its shooting schedule; production shutdowns meant that Falcon and the Winter Soldier, once slated to be the studio s first Disney+ series, ultimately had to follow WandaVision. Speaking of series: Disney launched its streaming service, Disney+, in November 2019, and with it came those two Marvel Studios series, plus Loki, currently airing, along with a dual same-day streaming/theatrical release of movies like Black Widow that will test the superhero giant’s box office might.(Photo by ©Marvel Studios)Then there was the corporate stand-off, in mid-2019, between Sony and Disney over deal terms related to their partnership on the Tom Holland Spider-Man movies, an impasse that threatened to pull Holland’s Peter Parker from the MCU together. We asked Feige about that period, one which he describes as “an emotional few months,” as well as other major moments for the studio over the last several years, including the recent acknowledgment that Loki Laufeyson is bisexual – and thus the first openly LGBTQ+ Marvel MCU character we’ve seen on screen – as well as the tragic death of Chadwick Boseman and what that means for the future of Black Panther.Plus, Feige gives us rare insights into what we can expect from Phase Four’s big newcomers, including Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Eternals. But, in this first part of our interview, he takes us up to Black Widow, beginning with a look back at a moment from Phase Three that still brings him chills – and one which gave millions of fans a sense of hope as the world was mired in lockdown. The Viral Clip of Audiences Reacting to Endgame “Took On New Meaning, Even For Me Personally, During Lockdown Last Year” Relatively early on in the pandemic, that clip from inside with audiences at Avengers: Endgame’s first theatrical run, went viral – with the people cheering for the on your left moment and when the portals opened up. It was wonderful because it reminded me of Endgame and the year before – I think I was in one of those theaters where somebody had recorded that – so that feeling was very special. But coming in the midst of this pandemic, when we had spent so much time in our homes, not surrounded by other people, it was a wonderful reminder of community and of a shared experience. We’ve all shared the pandemic experience apart, but that clip did take on, I think, new meaning, even for me personally, during the lockdown last year – not just a memory of the year before and the wonderful achievement that the Russo brothers and our entire cast and everybody at Marvel Studios pulled off with Endgame, but a promise of the future and of being in a theater again and having a shared experience like that someday in the future. [Editor’s Note: Feige attended a fan screening in late June the day after this interview was conducted.] But every time we make a film, it is with the expectation of delivering on a promise of an experience, to be experienced together in a theater. And seeing where people laugh or seeing where people get very quiet and still, or where people cheer if we should be so lucky, in moments in the movie… We spend years and years trying to work up to those moments, and being in a theater and seeing it and seeing it happen, there s nothing better. Every decision we make is from the point of view of sitting in a crowded theater experiencing the story. In the case of Shang-Chi, 10 or 15 years in the past – we have been working towards a Shang-Chi movie for many, many years; towards the Black Widow movie, as everybody knows, for many, many years. So those were always set as films. When Bob Iger told us about Disney+ and about his desire for us to produce shows for Disney+, it gave us a new avenue, frankly, to do something we hadn t been considering before, which was really doing a deep dive on characters who deserve a deep dive but hadn t had the chance yet. It took us four or five films to tell even a tiny story of Wanda Maximoff and The Vision.Same thing with Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes. It s a testament to those characters, and particularly to those actors, that the audience fell in love with them in what really amounted to a relatively short amount of screen time and a handful of films. But we knew they were being underutilized, both the characters and the actors, and we really wanted to have a showcase to show off how amazing those characters are and how amazing those actors are – and certainly Tom Hiddleston as Loki, as well. And also to do it in a new medium and do it in a way that couldn t be done in a feature film. (Photo by Marvel Studios/Disney+)“By the first few episodes of WandaVision, people are asking, ‘Where is Agnes going to show up again? What else is she going to do?’… Within the MCU, [Kathryn Hahn’s return]  can’t come soon enough.” We were all fans of [Kathryn Hahn] at Marvel Studios. And she had come in for a general meeting coincidentally right around the time we were trying to cast Agnes-slash-Agatha. It was one of those, Why didn t we think of this before? Louis D Esposito [co-president of Marvel Studios] actually sat down and had a general [meeting] with her. And it very quickly went from that: She s great. What could she do for us someday? Anyway, who s going to play Agatha? We really have to cast this part. Wait a second… It was honestly almost exactly like that.One of the great things in building the MCU is seeing audiences respond to characters that they were not expecting or that they were not asking for. I wouldn t say there was a huge contingency of people banging down the door for Agatha Harkness to appear in the MCU, but she s a great character portrayed by a great actress. And by the first few episodes people are asking, Where is she going to show up again? What else is she going to do? I think the same thing s happening right now with John Walker from The Falcon and Winter Soldier series and certainly with Mobius M. Mobius as portrayed by Owen Wilson in the Loki series. So, that is something that is so important to the MCU: including new characters. The comics are filled with many lifetimes of spectacular characters and when you find the best actors to portray them it can quickly go from an audience never hearing of a character to them upset with us that we haven t already announced their own standalone movie. And that makes us all very happy. Rotten Tomatoes: When will we see Agatha next? Someday. Someday soon. You will see Kathryn Hahn in Knives Out 2 next, then maybe an assortment of other things. But within the MCU, it can t come soon enough. Let s put it that way.(Photo by © Marvel Studios)“For Sam Wilson, wearing the red, white, and blue in America would be complex. That is what we were interested in exploring.” Of primary importance [with the creation of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier] was allowing Anthony Mackie to show the full range of what Anthony Mackie can do. Such an amazing, amazing actor, and same thing with Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes. But when old man Steve Rogers handed the shield to Sam Wilson at the end of Endgame, you could see a complexity in Anthony s performance there. Old man Cap says, How s it feel? And Sam says, Like it belongs to somebody else. And old man Steve says, It doesn t. It s yours. It wouldn t be that simple. It wouldn t be that simple for anyone to step into those shoes that Steve Rogers had worn, but particularly for Sam Wilson, wearing the red, white, and blue in America would be complex. That is what we were interested in exploring. That s what Anthony was interested in exploring – our fellow producers, Zoie Nagelhout and Nate Moore. And thankfully when Malcolm Spellman, our head writer, came on, is really when all of that it turned into the series that you saw.It is a series that he had written with his writing staff before the pandemic. We d started shooting that before lockdown. So [that was] in 2019. Some people have asked, Were you surprised that it become even more relevant after 2020? What we d gone through? And what Malcolm says is, Well it was relevant in 2019 as well, it s been relevant for 100s of years, which is exactly correct. Figuring out a way to both wear the red, white, and blue with pride, and acknowledge the past at the same time, seemed like an interesting needle to thread and one that we needed filmmaker like Kari Skogland and writer like Malcolm Spellman and his team to pull off. That thread will certainly continue into the future [in Captain America 4]. Yes, with our new Captain America. (Photo by © Marvel Studios)The Loki Team has taken “the TVA conceit that we ve loved so much and turned it into an entirely different way of looking at the MCU and looking at the timeline of the MCU.” I think everything we do, I hope, are building blocks towards the bigger MCU while actually just being entertaining pieces of art in and of themselves. The Loki series explores an organization from the comics that we ve been obsessed with for years at Marvel Studios called the Time Variance Authority. And honestly, 15, 20 years ago [we were] going, This is a great idea. I wonder if we could ever do something with this… Honestly, [we were] thinking it was a pipe dream that would never come to fruition. (But Avengers was a pipe dream 20 years ago.) And now that we have this series, our producer Kevin Wright and our director Kate Herron and our head writer Michael Waldron and executive producer Stephen Broussard have taken the TVA conceit that we ve loved so much and turned it into an entirely different way of looking at the MCU and looking at the timeline of the MCU.And yes, the potential of alternate realities that we ve heard whispers of from the Ancient One and from other characters in a few of our movies [is there], but [we re] actually being able to explore it and try to understand it in, again, a rather subversive way – in a very bureaucratic organization that may or may not be telling the truth about the way things work. (Photo by Marvel Studios)“Tom can take that enthusiasm with his immense amount of talent and really rally a crew behind him as well, which is what he did on that show.” Tom [Hiddleston] is as great an actor as they come. He s as charismatic a person as there is, but he also honestly loves that he s been given this chance, from the moment we hired him with Ken Branagh on the first Thor film to the response that episode three [of Loki] got the other week when it debuted on Disney+. Tom is just as enthusiastic from that first call to each episode of Loki coming out. And that is so important. I think all of us at Marvel Studios try to maintain that enthusiasm and acknowledgement and humility of how lucky we are to be in this position. Tom can take that with his immense amount of talent and really rally a crew behind him as well, which is what he did on that show.One of the other things that s personally so exciting about continuing a franchise for this long is getting to evolve your relationship with the cast. Tom started as an actor that Ken Branagh knew who – as people may know – famously auditioned not for Loki, but for Thor, and then felt very thankful to get this job as Loki. I now find myself thankful that he said yes and that he is an executive producer on this Loki series and is helping us make the series what it is. Relationships evolving over the years is one of the other great pleasures of working with spectacular talents like that. All Rights Reserved.)On Loki’s Bisexuality: “Representation is important across the board and the comics chart the path.” Representation is important across the board, and the comics charts the path in almost all ways for what we do in the MCU. And in the comics there are many LGBTQ characters and we want to showcase that on the screen as well. We want to bring those characters to life on the screen. As Stan Lee used to say, Marvel represents the world outside your window. And outside of our window there are all different types of people in all different types of places with all different types of preferences and we want that reflected in the MCU and in our fictional world as it is in our real world. So it is of utmost importance that when people go in and see one of our films, or log on to Disney+ and watch one of our series, that it represents the true world outside their window when it comes to the types of people portraying the heroes and the characters in our world. (Photo by Marvel Studios)“That Scarlett chooses to continue to work and to bring Natasha Romanoff to life is a testament to the character of Natasha and how rich she is in the comics and how much more there was to explore.” Scarlett Johansson is just the perfect representation of an amazing actor lending their talents to our stories for a decade. That is an amazing privilege to have and one that we don t ever take for granted. She was nominated for two Academy Awards in one year, a few years ago! She is spectacular and could do whatever she wants. That she chooses to continue to work and to bring Natasha Romanoff to life is a testament, I think, to the character of Natasha and how rich she is in the comics and how much more there was to explore – and a testament to Scarlett, who likes bringing these complex characters to life. It really is a perfect representation of when you find a perfect actor willing to dedicate their talents to an amazing character from publishing that you can go 10 years on and be on the verge of their first standalone movie – and thankfully our first movie in a theater in almost two years. I just can t wait for people to see in a theater, or on Disney+ if they want. But to get out there and see what Scarlett and the entire team has done. And my answer to that is always ‘not soon enough.’” Yelena is a character that s been the comics for many years now and a character that we d wanted to bring to the screen for quite a while. Soon after we cast [Florence], I think she was nominated for Little Women, which was amazing. And again, like Scarlett, being able to traverse these worlds of classic literature like Little Women and moving over to what we consider also classic literature of the Marvel comics – and do both with equal import and with equal pouring of their heart and soul into it, which everybody, all of our filmmakers and writers and the entire team at Marvel Studios do. Florence did that tremendously well.The very first question that often comes out of people seeing Black Widow for the first time is when will Florence Pugh show up again in the MCU? And my answer to that is always “not soon enough,” because she s amazing. It’s another testament to Scarlett – who knew exactly the movie that we were making, who was a part of the development of the movie – [that she chose to] make that film an ensemble and to surround herself with new characters portrayed by new actors entering the MCU and allowing them all to shine, knowing that lifting them up lifts up the whole movie, which is what a smart producer does – which Scarlett is. So every compliment that Florence or David [Harbour] or Rachel [Weisz] or O-T [Fagbenle] get on a movie, I also turn back to Scarlett for being so smart to allow the film to be a showcase for multiple characters, which is what the best of our films can do. An IFC Films Release.)When the team behind Australian thriller The Dry – which includes its lead star and producer Eric Bana – decided to release the film into cinemas there on January 1, it was a risky call. While the country has been largely spared from the worst effects of the COVID-19 pandemic (one of the reasons so many Hollywood productions have set up shop there), audiences were still cautious about large indoor gatherings, and snap lockdowns to snuff out small COVID-19 outbreaks – even in the low single-digits – were a regular occurrence in major cities. But Bana, his fellow producers, and distributor Village Roadshow felt sure they had something special in their adaptation of Jane Harper s hugely popular book of the same name, the kind of Australian movie that might just bring Australian audiences back to cinemas in big numbers. And it turns out they were right.The Dry follows Bana s Melbourne-based detective, Aaron Falk, who returns to the rural town in which he was raised to attend the funeral of a childhood friend who appears to have killed his wife and child in a murder-suicide. Reconnecting with friends and sparring with enemies from his youth, Falk becomes sucked into the case which, it turns out, has links to another mystery from 20 years ago – one in which he may have played a part. These dual twisting threads, Bana s stoic and layered work as Falk, and an incredible look that splays the baked Australian landscape across the screen to stark and arresting effect, made The Dry a hit in Australia. In January and February, it became the movie to see there, a might-have-been-indie-thriller that tapped into the popular consciousness like a big-budget Hollywood action flick, and it now ranks as the 15th biggest Australian movie ever at the local box office. (Fun if unsurprising fact: Crocodile Dundee is number one.)Talking with Rotten Tomatoes, Bana is clearly chuffed with the film s success Down Under, and excited for American and international audiences now to be transported to Kiewarra, the fictional farming community in which The Dry s twin mysteries unfold. The movie opens in theaters here on May 21. From his home in Melbourne, the star of Troy, Munich, and Romulus, My Father – his last Aussie film before The Dry – opened up about the sudden popularity of Australian movies in Australian cinemas (The Dry was part of a high-earning crop of recent films including High Ground and Penguin Bloom), scouting the perfect locations to bring Kiewarra to life, and what he hopes will be the impact of so many overseas productions shooting in his backyard. An IFC Films Release.)Joel Meares for Rotten Tomatoes: I actually had a chance to see The Dry in theaters when I was back in Australia for two months over Christmas. It was a great experience and I have to let you know that you re actually responsible for getting my mother a date: we were in the lobby before the movie and I d gone to get popcorn and when I came back a man had come up to her with a notepad. She introduced me, and she said, This is John and he s giving me his number. Eric Bana: This might be my favorite theatrical story yet from The Dry.Rotten Tomatoes: She took the number and he walked away, but he also said, I had to say your mother was beautiful and I had to shoot my shot. And mom hadn t been to the movies in 10 years! There s not really a question there, but I guess: How do you feel making love happen?Bana: That is pretty spectacular. I love that story. It s in a lot of ways symbolic of, as you mentioned, so many people going back to the cinema for the first time. Not only I guess regular cinema goers, but we ve found that there are a lot of people who, for whatever reason, just really felt compelled to see this film on a big screen, which is so rewarding for us because it s exactly what our intention was. The way that that energy was picked up on by the Australian public was beyond what we had obviously expected, so it was amazing.Rotten Tomatoes: It was a very strange thing to be back in Australia and have the likes of network morning TV talking about this Australian film as a phenomenon. Our films sometimes struggle to cut through the clutter back home. And at the same time as The Dry, cinemas were filled with more Aussie films: Penguin Bloom and High Ground and Rams and all these other films were out. Was it a kind of exciting moment to see Australians going to the movies to see Australian films?Bana: Yeah, it was. It was exciting because it was a deliberate thing. We wanted the film to be commercial. We knew that it had the hallmarks of an indie – with dark themes. But on top of that, there was a potential to try and lure people in with a more commercial sell, which is why [distributor] Village Roadshow were such good partners for us.But you re right, it was the beginning. The release date was really scary when we got it, January 1. [Editor’s note: COVID-19 cases were down in low single and double-digits in Australia at the time, but cinemas were only newly operating at capacity and snap lockdowns were regular occurrences in Australian cities.] It was sink or swim. But we felt really confident in the film and that it helped set up this trend of people going, Yeah, we really want to get behind these Australian films. It has changed the language around theatrical releases for Australian films, which is the thing that I m most excited about and that all the producers are excited about: That we can start seeing the potential for Australian films and think about them differently.(Photo by Courtesy of IFC Films. An IFC Films Release.)Rotten Tomatoes: It s exciting to be here back in America now and seeing these films being released and embraced here. The Dry struck me, though, as quite particularly Australian in some ways – it deals with issues that we face, I think, more acutely than some other nations, like the drought and the problem of gambling; and it also gave me a lot of Wake In Fright vibes with the aggressive macho-ness that your character faces at the pub. But in what ways do you feel the movie is universal, and what are you hoping that international audiences are going to get from this film?Bana: Look, we were really lucky that Jane Harper chose to set the story in a fictitious Victorian town of Kiewarra. The key elements of the thriller/whodunit would have worked in any country, in any landscape, with her writing. But we felt like the worst thing we could have done was set this film in Texas, because the hyper-Australian-ess and the attention to detail of the characters and locations are what makes it so specific and is what makes it unique, and that s what made the book unique.That was playing to our strengths, because it was language we understood, it was characters we understood, it was locations and landscape that we understood. It enabled us, in terms of producers, directors, actors, crew, cinematography, to elevate our game to the highest possible level in a local landscape. By making it hyper-Australian in terms of its detail, I think it helps amp up all those other aspects of an already completely solid story and whodunit, which would have worked like I say in any landscape around the world, but fortunately for us it was set here.To answer your question, I hope the audience enjoys being transported. We re really excited about the idea that Americans will feel like they ve spent two hours in Kiewarra at the end of the film. I m really, really excited to see Americans reactions, because it s a depiction of – as you know – rural Australia that we don t always get in cinema. It s usually quite a caricature. It s usually the Outback. It s not usually these towns, which is how – I don t know about you – but how I identify with rural Australia is through these little country towns.Rotten Tomatoes: And they re towns that are changing, they re affected by a number of impacts. I found the choice for John Polson s character to live in that isolated McMansion/new monstrosity very interesting.Bana: Yeah.(Photo by Courtesy of IFC Films. An IFC Films Release.)Rotten Tomatoes: That said, we do also get these amazing vistas and we do get this beautiful – somewhat despairing if you think about the drought that underlies it – striking imagery. From what I understand, you were part of the location scouting for this film. What was that process like and visually what were you going for in terms of the locations?Bana: We really wanted to try and capture the essence of what Jane had written in the book. We knew that area, the Wheat Belt of Victoria, which is about five hours away from the city in which I am now, Melbourne. There was no one town that could do the job so we based ourselves in a place called Warracknabeal and then we had about an hour-and-a-half circle from there that we could cherry pick all these tiny little towns to stitch together our Kiewarra. So, we use the pub from Minyip, we ll use the main street from Beulah, we ll use the house from here, and so forth.It was a lot of different locations to get the greatest possible visual consistency with what was in the book. Stefan Duscio, our Director of Photography, did an amazing job. He is from the country and really understands that landscape. Because you had to believe that the dryness and the tension and the mental scarring that comes from people not only living through a severe drought, but also being dependent upon rainfall in order to survive financially and emotionally as well.We shot the beginning of 2019, at the peak of the drought and just as the bush fires were starting. It just felt, it did, it felt like it was never going to rain. It did rain after we left, which is traditional for film crews, of course, but it was very important to us.Rotten Tomatoes: You’ve spoken about what was important to you as the producer of this film. I m wondering, as you look at what you re going to produce next, and as you develop a body of work that you ve produced, is there a guiding principle or something you re looking to do with the projects that you want to shepherd now?Bana: They tend to be projects that I want to be very closely involved in myself. I don t want to be someone who just attaches their name to things for the sake of it. So, it will generally be stuff that I m intrinsically involved with. I was fortunate enough that in this case, Bruna Papandrea, the producer who acquired the rights some years ago, was someone that we knew well and wanted to get involved with. That was wonderful to learn from her and my co-producer, Robert Connolly, who is our director as well, who is just so experienced and fantastic.I guess, yeah, it s stuff that I really feel that I can have a solid contribution to and have a voice in. The Dry was a “gimme” because it was in my backyard. I knew the area; we were working out of our office and post-production was just a two-minute walk away, so it was fantastic in that sense.(Photo by Courtesy of IFC Films. An IFC Films Release.)Rotten Tomatoes: It s great to see Australian movies at the cinemas, but the other thing that s happening in Australia at the moment is that it feels like every American production in the world is currently based there on the Gold Coast or in Byron Bay – largely thanks to COVID being fully under control and some generous tax incentives. I m wondering, what do you hope the impact of all this activity that s happening now will be for the local industry? There is a fear I see when speaking to some people that everyone is going to pack up once the pandemic ends and things settle back to normal, and tax incentives won t be enough to keep this level of production in the country. Is there a hope you have or something you re thinking about in terms the impact of all this production happening right now?Bana: I think the volume is such that definitely there will be a slight legacy there – that more people will feel comfortable traveling to Australia to film. I m confident that there will be some kind of continual, residual value in people being comfortable with Australia as a shooting location, even when we lose our ultra-competitive edge due to COVID and the situation being back to normal. Obviously, the UK is a long way off being back online in that strong production sense. We will lose some production, eventually, so hopefully we can regain some of that.But it s really important that we strike the right balance and that we make the most of the theatrical energy that came out of this year with Australian cinema. We re starting to get government to really pay attention now, which is great, both on a state level here in Victoria and on a federal level with the offset remaining at 40% – which was super, super important.I hope that there is a long tail. I think we have to be prepared for that drop-off that you talk of, when the rest of the world goes back to normal and every other shooting location becomes available. But hopefully there will be a bit of a legacy here and people go, “Actually, it was great shooting down there. Studios were great in all the different cities. Australians made us feel welcome.”You d like to think it s not just a tax break that lures someone to a shooting location. And I ve been on the receiving end of that myself. I ve worked in a lot of international cinema that s shot in tax-break locations, so I get it and I ve benefited from that, so I can t criticize that process too much. But at the same time, what makes those locations something that you want to go back to are the crews and the conditions and how great those cities are to be in – it makes a really big difference.Hopefully, we can get our way into people s hearts and all these directors, producers, actors want to keep coming back here. Are you focused on staying there at the moment and working on Australian stories? Or are you still open to what tickles you, wherever it happens to be?Bana: It s not a driving principle for me. Since Romulus, My Father (pictured above), Rob [Connolly, who directed Romulus and The Dry] and I have been looking to find something to do at home because this is where we live and it s obviously hugely advantageous. I don t have to fly 24 hours to go to work; it was novel to shoot something at home!It has to compete with everything else on the pile. I don t feel like a patriotic sense of “I must do this many Australian films.” I d much rather do the greatest work I can possibly do here when it comes along. That, I think, is a more important contribution. I don t have a personal quota or anything like that. Obviously, if I found something else to do here that was of that quality, I d do it tomorrow.But the pool is much smaller here, obviously. The Australian pile is much smaller, and it s much harder for me to find films of that quality here at the same frequency as I do. So, there s no real priority given to it, but obviously it s hugely rewarding when it does come along.Rotten Tomatoes: And just finally, I know you said it s a very particularly Australian story and that s what elevates it. But also because of its interesting structure, this dual mystery, it has a hook where I can see it could be remade. They could take this idea and set it somewhere else as a remake. I m not saying that anyone s suggested that, but it did pop into my head. How would you feel about potentially having a remade version of this in another location or country?Bana: I m good with accents! [Laughs]. I ve had people ask me about a sequel; I haven t had people ask me about a version in another country. I ll just go play Aaron in Denmark or Germany! That s not something I ve heard, yet. Let s hope that the specific nature of this one means that people would rather experience the original and not have the accent subtitled even in English. Let s hope they can understand what the hell we re saying and enjoy. Enjoy our wonderful Australian accents for a change. It s not often Australians get to play Australians in international cinema. I m happy for them to get a real taste of Australia through this film.Rotten Tomatoes: My favorite accent moment in any film, by the way, happens to be Leslie Mann making fun of how you say No in Funny People.Bana: [Laughing] Yeah, it was pretty special. Pictures)When it was first announced, Justice League was intended to be a two-part film with Snyder and stars Henry Cavill, Gadot, Affleck, Jason Momoa, Fisher, and Ezra Miller convening to film the bulk of the first film and portions of the second at Leavesden Studios in London. Much like the efforts of Warner Bros. Pictures cross-town superhero competition, the plan was for these two films to serve as a culmination of storylines began in Man of Steel and through Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Wonder Woman, and Suicide Squad. Although, once the scripts were developed, Snyder said the two films would tell distinct stories.Then, as filming commenced on Justice League in April of 2016, Batman v Superman was released to the derision of critics (it is at 28% on the Tomatometer) and, seemingly, the industry deciding en mass that the film was a creative disaster. In London, this meant the quiet cancellation of the second Justice League film and a hasty rewrite of the first film’s script to bring its story to a true conclusion. As we now understand it, the first Justice League movie was meant to end with the resurrection of Superman with the second film seeing the League assembling to fight cosmic-level bad guy Darkseid. In the years since it dissolved, Snyder offered fans glimpses of design art and storyboards from the abandoned second film thanks to his social media accounts, and lately has been teasing the first trailer for the Snyder Cut on HBO Max.But even as the film soldiered on in production, it was clear to Snyder and his partners at the studio that a period of reshoots would be required. Most big-budget tentpole releases schedule some additional photography these days, but the high-profile nature of Justice League – and the growing bad buzz around Warners’ attempts to bring the DC Comics heroes to the screen – meant the work was regarded with suspicion. Of course, no one would know just how extensive these reshoots would be until Snyder delivered his first cut.The Snyder Assembly : A First Draft(Photo by Clay Enos/© Warner Bros. Pictures /Courtesy Everett Collection)As with the myth of the six-hour version of David Lynch’s Dune, the notion of the Snyder Cut begins with an assembly of the film – a compilation of the best takes chosen by editors David Brenner, Richard Pearson, Martin Walsh, and Snyder himself representing the scenes as written in the script. Lacking complete special effects, utilizing a temporary soundtrack, and featuring the background studio noise of the scenes as they were filmed, an assembly is meant more to reveal what to cut from the script once the actors, technicians, and filmmakers fill in the gutters left behind by the screenplay. An actor’s expression may more effectively convey a piece of written dialogue, for example. But an assembly will give a director of a multi-million-dollar film the first inkling of what he may need to reshoot to massage the story into shape. For Dune, Lynch went back and reshot the scene in which Paul Atreides (Kyle MacLachlan) drinks the Water of Life to unite ideas and clarify ideas from a number of scenes in the assembly which were ultimately cut from the theatrical release.And while assemblies are not typically released to the public, 20th Century Fox Home Video did release an “assembly cut” of Alien3 in its Alien Quadrilogy DVD box set and the subsequent Alien Anthology Blu-ray set. Roughly 30 minutes longer than the release version, it is a surprisingly finished product which more closely reflects director David Fincher’s vision of the film before the studio took it out of his hands and removed the religious overtones and an entire chase sequence. In fact, we re inclined to believe the original Snyder cut fans were calling for, before production began again in earnest on the project, was more a fine assembly or early director s cut than a true early assemblage of material.February, 2016: The Origin of the Snyder Cut(Photo by © Warner Bros. Pictures)Even before Snyder announced his departure from the film in May of 2017, rumors around town indicated footage from London had failed to wow Warner executives. At this point, reshoots were scheduled and Joss Whedon entered the story. At the time, he was reportedly working on a Batgirl film, but was also assisting Snyder and Warner Bros. with writing new Justice League material. Around this time, February of 2016, rumors circulated indicating Snyder had been fired, but both he and the studio quickly shot this down.But then Snyder’s family experienced an unimaginable tragedy when his daughter Autumn took her own life on March 20, 2017. Snyder subsequently said he continued to work on the film for nearly six weeks after her death in the hopes it would mitigate his grief, but it proved to be no comfort at all. He willingly handed the reins off to Whedon for the reshoots and the post-production phase.In that moment, Snyder’s cut was characterized as unfinished – and considering the realities of major Hollywood filmmaking, that is reasonable to believe. Any extensive visual effects would still be in process for months to come. Color grading, sound mixing, and other stages of the final post-production efforts would not occur until the reshoots were completed.Nonetheless, members of the production like storyboard artist Jay Oliva (who also directed many of the DC Universe Animated direct-to-video titles), Momoa, and composer Junkie XL (who was replaced by Danny Elfman for the theatrical version) all claim the film was in a much more finished state than was suggested at the moment Snyder walked away.The Snyder Cut Direct-to-Streaming Is Nothing New(Photo by © Warner Bros. Pictures)Turning a director s cut from a file on a hard drive somewhere to a marketable product is a specialty of the home video market – a tradition carried through now to streamer HBO Max and Justice League. A 2006 DVD release of Dune offered fans a widescreen version of the film’s television cut, supervised by the same Universal employees who prepared the infamous “Love Conquers All” version of Brazil. Both cuts of that film emerged on a celebrated Criterion Collection laserdisc set which was later released on DVD and Blu-ray.Like Alien3, Alien and Aliens also came to DVD and Blu-ray with alternate director’s cuts representing versions of the films those directors felt more aligned with their original visions.And it was out of this ethos that Alien director Ridley Scott and Warner Bros. Home Entertainment assembled its fabulous DVD and Blu-ray releases of Blade Runner. Its high-end collector’s edition came complete with five cuts of the film and a 45-minute deleted scene compilation which almost counts as a sixth cut. As with Alien, Scott wanted fans to experience every extant version in addition to his preferred “Final Cut.” It was the sort of philosophy perfect from home video at the time and one we wish more directors would subscribe to.But in all of these cases, the films are in finished states. Has there ever been a case in which a director walked away from a film, saw it completed by someone else, only to find his vision restored many years later? As it happens, yes – and in an odd twist of fate, it is a film featuring Superman.The Donner Cut: The Movie that Set the Precedent(Photo by © Warner Bros. Pictures)In 1979, Richard Donner was fired from the two-part Superman production after butting heads with producers Ilya Salkind and Pierre Spengler throughout an arduous 18-month shoot. According to multiple sources, Donner managed to shoot around 70% of Superman II before it was decided to concentrate on making Superman the best it could be – which included moving Superman II’s intended ending to the first film. The suggestion may have come from A Hard Day’s Night director Richard Lester, who was on set as a consultant and would go on to finish Superman II after Donner’s departure. As Director’s Guild rules require the credited director shoot over 50% of a finished film, Lester remounted a number of scenes completed by Donner.And like Whedon’s changes to Justice League, Lester infused Superman II with a broader sense of humor. An off-screen voice shouts “I know some judo!” when the citizens of Metropolis threaten the Kryptonian criminals. A minute later, sight gags dominate while Ursa (Sarah Douglas) “blows them a kiss.” But unlike the theatrical release of Justice League, Superman II was considered the more creatively and financially successful of the two original Superman films until a critical reappraisal some years later.In 2001, editor Michal Thau approached Warner Home Video and Donner about reassembling his version of Superman II from extant material. A few years later, footage of Marlon Brando shot for the film but later deleted became available, making the Donner Cut a possibility. Working with Donner, Thau produced The Donner Cut, which accurately depicts the director’s plans for the film – right down to the original ending he later co-opted for Superman. It is a noble effort which cuts down on the broad humor and ups the drama, but also underscores the missed opportunity. Donner never had the chance to find a new ending for Superman II, leaving his “cut” of the film feeling strangely repetitive.

An episode does have a name after all:  Episode 2: "A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms" 87%. The name highlights one of our favorite moments from the newest season 8 episode of HBO s Game of Thrones, which aired on Sunday night.1. “I’ll Get Right On It” (More Than You Know, Gendry)(Photo by HBO)We’ve seen a bit of this in the trailer. Arya (Maisie Williams) says, “I know Death. He’s got many faces. I look forward to seeing this one.” What we didn’t know is that she was showing off in front of Gendry (Joe Dempsie).Persuading him to stop trying to convince her not to fight, Arya starts throwing daggers at a post. They land in a staggeringly perfect formation, and Gendry – well, if he wasn’t aroused by her presence before, he’s clearly sputtering over this display. So no, Arya’s whole “I know Death” speech wasn’t the highlight here. The highlight was Gendry’s worshipful response.2. “How Do You Know There Is an ‘Afterwards’”(Photo by Helen Sloan/HBO)Jaime (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) apologizes to Bran (Isaac Hempstead Wright) for trying to murder him. Bran gets it, though: The Fates had their way so that Bran could be this all-seeing wizard of uncomfortable stares. Jaime appreciates that Bran didn’t rat him out for that tower push, but what’s next? Bran will not confirm or deny that there is an afterwards. And for that, we think he’s being a bit of an asshole – the conversation was a highlight, but Bran is being a bit of a dick (more on that later).3. “What Happens Afterwards?”(Photo by Helen Sloan/HBO)There’s that word again, but let’s give a nod first to the scene in which Ser Jorah (Iain Glen) stands up for Tyrion (Peter Dinklage) and, it becomes apparent, suggests that Daenerys (Emilia Clarke) make nice with Sansa (Sophie Turner). Daenerys takes his advice. She visits Sansa, is surprised by Lord Royce’s (Rupert Vansittart) respectful greeting, and has that awkward “I’m going to try diplomacy” smile on her face – it makes everyone uncomfortable, but then Sansa, truthspeaker, diffuses that weirdness by telling Daenerys that she was as mistaken about Cersei’s true intentions as Tyrion was. (Deflect blame much, Dany?) Daenerys likes it when people are honest, so a point to Sansa. Then, Daenerys notes how Jon Snow (Kit Harington) has derailed her own plans to take the Iron Throne. She loves him, she says. Point to Daenerys. But, really, who’s keeping score? Daenerys and Sansa are having a real moment – kicking and screaming inside probably, but real.4. “I Want to Fight for Winterfell  Lady Sansa”(Photo by Helen Sloan/HBO)Give it up for Theon (Alfie Allen), showing what repentance means (and that Sansa has some power in the room with the queen). Sansa is clearly moved by seeing her father’s former ward again – man parts or no.5. “My little Crow”(Photo by Helen Sloan/HBO)Jon’s reunion with Edd (Ben Crompton), Tormund (Kristofer Hivju), and Beric (Richard Dormer) is like a little amuse-bouche before the war. Tormund: “The big woman still here?” Yes, Tormund, the big woman is here. Will they consummate their thing?6. “I Don’t Know – No One’s Ever Tried”(Photo by HBO)So, the meeting of all of the principal characters (minus Cersei and Euron) at Winterfell had a few spectacular moments within it.First, “He’s tried many times with many Three-Eyed Ravens.” The “many Three-Eyed Ravens” part is baffling: This is a position that needs to be filled every few thousand years? I thought I’d read my histories, but the idea of “many Three-Eyed Ravens” is news to me. And Bran doesn t know because no one s ever tried ? Is the Three-Eyed Raven only seeing the past these days?Daenerys follows Ser Jorah’s advice and publicly declares her faith in and need for Tyrion. Haven’t we all felt like Tyrion at some point in our careers? Sometimes you just need a little PDA to make everything right.Theon steps up with a pseudo-apology to Bran, telling him he took the castle from him, so now he’s willing to face the Night King with Bran to make amends. Good luck with that, Theon. (We have the sinking feeling that we’re about to get a lesson in just deserts.)“We’re all going to die,” Tormund says, which gives voice to that sinking feeling. “But,” he says casting a glance over at his lady love, Brienne, “at least we die together.” New world order question: Tormund’s behavior is “creepy,” not “romantic”? I try to put myself in Brienne’s shoes – they’re big, that’s all I have to say.Finally, Tyrion insisting that Bran tell him his story is hilarious: “If only we were trapped in a castle, in the middle of winter with nowhere to go.” Tyrion surely knows that Bran may not make it – clearly Tyrion is thinking about his future book deal.7. “Do You Want to Grow Old in This Place?”(Photo by Helen Sloan/HBO)A friend summed up the black experience in the Seven Kingdoms: “Can we talk about Winterfell s reaction to black folks comin up in there!!?!” Though I feel Grey Worm’s (Jacob Anderson) intent when he asks Missandei (Nathalie Emmanuel) if she wants “to grow old in this place” and then also  her wish to see Naath again, I also kind of feel like the Seven Kingdoms needs to be integrated. I wish she might have said something along the lines of I think we need to bring Naath to the Seven Kingdoms. Too bad about those dead wights walking.We need a vacation in Dorne to remind us what multiculturalism is. (Here’s hoping the prequel mixes it up lots more.)8. “And Now Our Watch Begins”Jon and Sam are on the ramparts having a – Wait, what? Where the hell did Ghost come from? Don’t try to distract us with clever dialogue from Edd. A direwolf just magicked up in here at Winterfell! That was a reunion we were waiting for, and it occurred off screen? Was there an online short we missed? She kind of insists that he service her before they maybe possibly die because of his shoddy blacksmithing skills on her new spear. Kidding. Honestly, it was a powerful female moment: She stated the facts plainly (they may all die) and said what she wanted (to have sex before that happens). He was free to participate or go on his way. And that is what consent looks like, folks.10. “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms”(Photo by HBO)This episode has been a lovefest between Jaime and Brienne. She vouched for him when the council would have tossed him out, imprisoned him, or straight-up executed him. He scored points with viewers in telling her, “I’ll be honored to serve under your command – if you’ll have me.” Then later – facing an uncertain night with a dead foe – he gets into his cups and knights her. Brienne’s moist eyes reflected all of us in that moment. (If not you, then you have a black heart and only watch for boobs and zombies.)Pod – maker of sympathetic faces, singer of songs. ♥ him! Tormund – a suckler of teats. We’ll leave that there.“In the name of the Warrior, I charge you to be brave. In the name of the Father, I charge you to be just. In the name of the Mother, I charge you to defend the innocent. Arise, Brienne of Tarth, a knight of the Seven Kingdoms,” Ser Jaime said, dubbing her with a sword.11. “I Wish You Good Fortune, Cousin”The one-on-one Ser Jorah had with little she-bear Lyanna Mormont (Bella Ramsey) went exactly as expected, with him trying to convince the tween Lady of House Mormont to retire to the crypt: “You’re the future of the House.” She, absolutely refusing: “I pledged to fight for the North, and I will fight.”Then, you know, Sam (John Bradley) interrupts to give Ser Jorah his family’s Valyrian steel sword, Heartsbane.12. “My Name – My Real Name – Is Aegon Targaryen”Jon’s in the crypt making brooding look good, when Daenerys comes in. “Who’s that?” she asks. “Mom,” he (essentially) says. He tells her the story of Lyanna and Rhaegar, and Daenerys is not exactly happy to have her lover be another contender for the Iron Throne. But before she can get pissed, horns blow and they dash out and nod to each other on the ramparts before, we assume, dashing off to mount dragons Drogon and Rhaegal.Dracarys, motherf ers. The episode also confirmed some people s suspicions about how his Rick Grimes would exit the series, while establishing the series new status quo in its final moments.But considering Rick spent much of the episode looking back on his life and his journey —with special visits from departed friends like Shane (Jon Bernthal), Herschel (the late Scott Wilson), and Sasha (Sonequa Martin-Green) — we were also left in a contemplative mood as AMC aired a special preview of the next three episodes. Specifically, Shane s notion that Rick always had it in him had us thinking about his penchant for violence. While it was typically in the service of his family, it also took on brutal forms as he journeyed from King County to the bridge near Alexandria. So let s take a look back at some of the key kills which defined Rick and informed one of his most surprising decisions.SPOILER WARNING: The below contains spoilers for all seasons of The Walking Dead. Extinguishing Hannah The Bicycle Girl: Season 1, Episode 1: "Days Gone Bye" 100%In some ways, it all really comes back to Rick’s first kill, the Bicycle Girl. The make-up effects and overall mood of the scene featuring Bicycle Girl (Melissa Cowan) were so impressive that AMC went back later to tell the story of Hannah (Lilli Birdsell), the person who once inhabited the corpse Rick encountered. But for Rick, she marks two important moments. She is the first undead corpse he encounters after waking up from his coma and the first walker he kills — even if she can’t technically walk. Though Rick has killed many, many walkers and people since that day, it is the real beginning of his post-apocalyptic life. And though he has accepted he must kill these creatures, he apologizes to the former Hannah nonetheless, establishing a pattern of mercy kills for some time to come.Shooting Sophia: Season 2, Episode 7: "Pretty Much Dead Already" 93%While killing Shane was one of the most significant moments of the second season, the way Rick took charge to shoot Carol’s (Melissa McBride) daughter Sophia (Madison Lintz) established just how easily Rick can set aside his humanity to dispatch a walker with a familiar face. The girl disappeared in the season 2 premiere, only to be discovered when Shane let loose Herchel’s collection of zombies in the barn; after Shane and some of the others dealt with most of the walkers, Sophia’s corpse stumbled out. While the others stood by devastated — and Daryl (Norman Reedus) held Carol back from running to her — Rick took charge and ended the girl’s afterlife. Like Bicycle Girl, it was another mercy kill. But when it comes down to it, Rick demonstrated the capacity to shoot a child. Sure, a walker child, but the swiftness of his actions would reverberate for years to come.(Photo by @ AMC)Offering Tomas A Look At His Machete: Season 3, Episode 2: "Sick" 94%And then there came the day when Rick’s choice to use lethal force switches from errands of mercy to a baser instinct. In the wake of killing Shane, Rick’s ability to trust was at an all-time low; which meant the men he and the group discovered in the West Georgia Correctional Facility were the least likely people to ever get on his good side. Nonetheless, Rick and the men came to an accord: he would help them clear a cellblock infested with walkers for a portion of the remaining food in the cafeteria. It seemed like a good deal until de facto prison leader Tomas (Nick Gomez) allowed the laundry room to fill with walkers and he made two not-so-subtle attempts to end Rick. After the first attempt, Tomas played it off like an accident, saying “s t happens.” Following the second, Rick responded in kind before slamming his machete into Tomas’s skull. As the first significant kill of the prison storyline, Rick’s ruthless murder of Tomas proved any hesitation he once had about killing the living was well and truly gone.Biting Joe The  Claimer: Season 4, Episode 16: "A" 90%While searching Georgia in search of Terminus, Rick, Daryl, Carl (Chandler Riggs), and Michonne (Danai Gurira) found themselves “guests” of The Claimers. Sore about the loss of one their men, Claimer leader Joe (Jeff Kober) announced his plan to kill Rick and Daryl while some of his men rape and kill Carl and Michonne. Rick, unarmed but in a rage, headbutted Joe, leading to a major scuffle. Joe managed to get the upper-hand and pinned Rick, but Rick delivered a killing blow by biting Joe in the neck and ripping out part of his jugular. In the chaos, Rick, Michonne and Daryl managed to kill the other Claimers, but Rick’s animalistic maneuver made it possible. As he later told Daryl, his brutality keeps the group alive.Trapping The Terminants: Season 5, Episode 3: "Four Walls and a Roof" 87%Having survived the journey from the prison to Terminus only to discover there was no sanctuary there, Rick and the others led some of the remaining cannibalistic “Terminants” into an ambush at St. Sarah’s Church. The cannibals were dispatched with Rick saving a special slaughter for their leader, Gareth (Andrew J. West). But unlike some of the other brutal reprisals Rick delivered on our list, here he led the others into orchestrating a mass killing, indicating a potential despotic megalomania should they ever settle down in one place. Sure, they were being chased by cannibals, but once a person is forced into a corner like that, they leave some of their humanity behind. Additionally, Rick’s refusal to hear Gareth’s pleas of mercy — and the way Rick hacked him up — stood in sharp contrast to his more merciful self only a few years prior.Executing Pete Anderson: Season 5, Episode 16: "Conquer" 83%After facing the Terminants, Rick and his team reached the Alexandria Safe-Zone and were invited into the tract home community lead by Deanna (Tovah Feldshuh). Soon after Rick and Michonne became Alexandria constables, he began to tussle with community doctor Pete Anderson (Corey Brill) as he suspected the local physician got off on beating his wife. The situation led to Rick’s incarceration and a community meeting in which Pete killed Deanna’s husband. She gave Rick the go-ahead to execute him, which he did with cold efficiency. Like the Claimers and the Terminants before Pete, Rick’s lethal response came without the regard he once had for human life. And it would have been more terrifying and de-humanizing for the character if Rick wasn’t right once again.(Photo by © AMC)Leaving Jessie And Sam Anderson Behind: Season 6, Episode 9: "No Way Out" 97%In the wake of Pete’s death, Rick became close with his widow, Jessie (Alexandra Breckenridge). But the bond didn t quite hold strong enough when Rick was faced with letting her die to save Carl. Due to circumstances peculiar to The Walking Dead, Alexandria was overrun with walkers. In the chaos, Rick attempted to save himself, Carl, Jessie, and her children by using the walker-blood camouflage again. But, during the escape, Jessie’s youngest son Sam (Major Dodson) froze at the sight of another child walker and began to cry, attracting walker attention. Jessie tried her best to quiet him and get him moving, but in her own panic, she latched onto Carl’s hand. Deciding that she was dooming everyone to death, Rick made the only “sane” choice and cut off her hand off with a hatchet so Carl could get free. The walkers devoured Jessie and Sam as Rick’s cold-blooded streak expanded to people he cared about.Sparing Negan: Season 8, Episode 16: "Wrath" 76%Then there was Rick’s one act of violence which, in the end, did not lead to someone dying. Rick’s journey was leading to this moment: After all the times he was forced to set aside his humanity to kill walkers with familiar faces, end imminent threats to Carl, and sacrifice others close to him, Rick chose not to exact vengeance on Savior leader Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan). Well, he still cut the man’s throat open, but his decision to order Siddiq (Avi Nash) to save him is the sort of mercy generally in short supply on The Walking Dead — especially when you consider how long he and Negan battled. Additionally, it is very surprising that Rick could reclaim some sense of mercy for the man who brutally beat Glen (Steven Yeun) to death.But maybe sparing Negan was the only way Rick could become truly human again. In the 18 months following Rick’s act of mercy, he did a lot to rebuild the community around him. And in defeating Negan without brutally murdering him, Rick seemed to reclaim some sort of hope for the future.(Photo by © AMC)

Even if many missed it at the time, King found a way to express an underlying truth about the place he calls home. In truth, we could make a list solely comprised of films from that time period, and it would still be quite spectacular, but we did include a few from decades prior.With hundreds of titles to choose from, iconic films like The Great Escape, Ocean s Eleven, and lesser-known gems like The Silent Partner failed to earn a spot on our list, but are still definitely worthy of a revisit. For our list below, though, we tried to find diversity within the genre, intermixing confidence schemes with bank jobs and heist comedies with gritty noirs. Each entry is unique, but they work within a shared formula: get a crew, plan the job, and do some nefarious things to take something without anyone finding out. Read below to see our list of classic heist films.Got another favorite heist classic you d add to our list? Let us know in the comments. Dog Day Afternoon (1975) 96% What is it? The true-life tale of a man who storms a Brooklyn bank for a day-time robbery, and everything that can go wrong does.Why you need to see it: A frequent choice in our Five Favorite Film series, this dramatic and at times hilarious tale of a bank job gone awry from Sidney Lumet showcases one of Al Pacino s greatest performances. Trying to get enough money for his lover s sex-reassignment surgery, Sonny Wortzik (Pacino) tries to rob a bank, and everything after that goes from bad to worse in what many consider to be one of the best films from the 70s. One of the highest-grossing movies of its year and a critical hit, Dog Day Afternoon was nominated for six Academy Awards, including Best Actor, which Pacino didn t win. Twenty years later, he would finally take home a golden statuette for The Scent of Woman, but his turn here alongside his The Godfather co-star John Cazale gives us, according to critic Roger Ebert,  one of the most interesting modern movie characters. If by chance you do, The Sting is a must-see con film and one of the best examples of a perfectly balanced heist comedy. Redford and Newman s undeniable chemistry is the main draw here, but the mini-course on the language of large-scale confidence schemes serves as a welcome bonus. The original Ocean s Eleven, The Italian Job, and Going in Style all have modern-day remakes that were received to varying critical and commercial success but, this Depression-era masterpiece from George Roy Hill is thought to be inimitable. A group of narcotics detectives track and try to intercept a large supply of heroin.Why you need to see it: On a list of quintessential 70s cop films, The French Connection would invariably rank high, so we understand if you re surprised to see it here on a list of heist films. Yes, the film follows a group of detectives as they try to get the bad guys, but with the exception of the players (among them leads Gene Hackman and Roy Scheider) all the elements of a heist are there: A group of professionals come together and concoct an elaborate plan to steal something from someone without them knowing – that s a heist movie any way you slice it. Bonnie Clyde is thought to be the first film of the New Hollywood movement – a period in American cinema which ushered in a new crop of dynamic young filmmakers and during which the modern-day blockbuster was born – but The French Connection solidified this new shift in filmmaking and film marketing. Featuring one of the best car chases in the history of film, William Friedkin s cop thriller is gritty, fast-paced, and completely unlike any police drama that came before it. Hackman is electrifying as the short-tempered, boozy bigot Popeye Doyle, and was the rightful winner of the Best Actor prize in 1972, which came alongside four more wins for the film, including Best Picture.Watch it if you like: The Italian Job, Heat, L.A. Confidential, Bullitt, The Untouchables, The Taking of Pelham One Two Three.  Where to watch: Stream now on the Starz app. Rent or buy on FandangoNOW, Vudu, Amazon, Google Play, and  iTunes.The Italian Job (1969) 83% What is it? A group of seasoned criminals fresh out of prison races through Italy trying to hijack a shipment of gold.Why you need to see it: If you enjoyed the 2003 remake of The Italian Job, prepare yourself: where that film was serviceable fun, the original film with Michael Caine was a game-changer. Perhaps a bit too camp and brash for its time, the British heist comedy was not universally loved upon release. The New York Times critic Vincent Canby dubbed the film technically sophisticated and emotionally retarded. Putting aside the dated language, the film does lean into action over plot, but that does not diminish the enjoyment of watching Caine and his cockney band of thieves race around Italy in the iconic MINI Coopers. But what was supposed to be a simple job finds the two lovers caught up in a web of deception and murder.Why you need to see it: Though not the first to do it, The Killing married itself to non-linear storytelling in a way that was wholly unique at the time; and it was a commitment that would also turn out to be a bit too revolutionary and decades ahead audience s tastes. Stanley Kubrick s third feature – but his first with a professional crew – was a headache for Paramount from the moment it was shot. Hated by test audiences, the film barely received an American release and was a commercial flop. However, contemporary critics recognized Kubrick s audacious skill with dialogue and camera movement and heralded the film as a masterwork, and its director as one to watch. It has since earned cult-like status, and its influences can be seen in the work of Quentin Tarantino, Christopher Nolan, and the Coen brothers. A taut noir, the black-and-white drama commits to the realism of pulling off the perfect job. How the subsequent events unravel for our lead con-artist after the job is done is where we find the film s brilliance.Watch it if you like: Reservoir Dogs, The Killer, Chinatown, Thief, The Getaway, The Layer Cake.Where to watch: Rent or buy on Amazon, Google Play, and iTunes.Topkapi (1964) 90%(Photo by Everett Collection)What is it? A woman and her ex-lover plot to steal a priceless dagger in Istanbul with the help of a simple-minded small-time crook.Why you need to see it: Jules Dassin s Topkapi is one of the best cinematic clap-backs ever filmed. In 1955, Dassin s Rififi – which won him a Best Director prize at Cannes – set the blueprint for modern-day heist films and soon became the subject of several parodies, including Mario Monicelli s Big Deal on Madonna Street. Tired of being the butt of the joke, Dassin released Topkapi in 1964 and, in doing so, ultimately got the last laugh as his genre send-up dwarfed all previous attempts. The comedy of the bumbling thieves who might just be inept enough to pull off an intricate robbery is only second in hilarity to the scene-stealing performance of Peter Ustinov who plays Simpson, a low-level crook caught in the wake of the larger crime.Watch it if you like: Casino Royale, American Vandal, Dr. Strangelove, The Whole Nine Yards, The Man From U.N.C.L.E.Where to watch: Stream now on Amazon Prime Video. After breaking out of prison, a career criminal plans one last job to secure his retirement while a dogged police detective is in hot pursuit.Why you need to see it: The godfather of French New Wave, Jean-Pierre Melville was tenacious when it came to authenticity on screen. From props to accents to his documentary style of filmmaking, his attention to detail and reality is present in every frame of Le Deuxieme Souffle. Melville s commitment would inspire the neorealism of directors François Truffaut, Jean-Luc Godard, and Agnes Varda. Sporting a high body count for its time, Le Deuxieme Souffle was a film that let the gangsters be gangsters. Thrilling, and dripping with suspense and violence, the film gives the audience a constant sense of unease as the characters descend deeper into the French underworld. An intimate epic, according to Martin Scorsese, the film was a key inspiration for his Oscar-nominated Jimmy Hoffa epic The Irishman. Watch it if you like: The Irishman, Miller s Crossing, Road to Perdition, Hell or High Water. Where to watch: Stream now on The Criterion Channel app. Rent or buy on Vudu, Amazon, Google Play, and iTunes.High Sierra (1941) 91%What is it? A seasoned ex-con must lead a group of untried criminals in the robbery of a desert resort.Why you need to see it: The first pairing of several between Humphrey Bogart and director John Huston, High Sierra is a thoughtful bridge between the brash 40s gangster flicks and the minimalistic crime-noirs of the 50s. Huston and Bogart would go on to collaborate on The Maltese Falcon, Key Largo, The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, and The African Queen; never was the power of Bogart s appeal more on display than when framed by Huston s lens. High Sierra is a heist film that utilizes early noir elements before they were popularized in the 1950s, and it s distinguished by its smart twists as well as Bogart s complex turn as Roy Earle.
