[8/4/20 Update: Walt Disney Pictures has scheduled Mulan for a North American premiere on Disney+ on September 4 at a price of .99 with a simultaneous limited theatrical release in select global markets. The fee will reportedly cover continuous access to the film as long as a Disney+ subscription is maintained.]Let’s get down to business… Disney has produced a live-action reimagining of their 1998 animated feature Mulan, and the new version is more of a martial arts movie and not at all a musical. Also, Mulan’s sidekick Mushu is missing. The changes have had fans worried, but the first reactions from critics, via Monday’s Hollywood premiere, are mostly positive, and they address the differences with reassuring approval. Praise also goes out to the movie’s empowering story and action as well. Sounds like this remake will make a fan out of you. Here’s what critics are saying about Mulan:Is it a movie worth fighting for?Wow. Just wow… I laughed, I cried, and I loved every second of it.  Tessa Smith, Mama s GeekyMulan is absolutely fantastic.  Kirsten Acuna, InsiderMulan is the best of the Disney live-action remakes since Cinderella.  Angie Han, MashableI’m very surprised at how much I liked the live action Mulan. It’s so majestic.  Peter Sciretta, SlashfilmThere’s a great film yearning to break out in Mulan, but it’s surprisingly bogged down by adapting the animation.  Mansoor Mithaiwala, ScreenRantDoes it bring honor to the original?Mulan leaves a lot behind, but offers much more in its absence. Plenty of 1998 throwbacks pepper a story full of incredible action, humor, and heart. Alison Foreman, MashableDifferent enough with great action scenes, but with the heart of the original film. Kirsten Acuna, InsiderFinds new notes in a story we already know while delivering gorgeous action, heart, and humor. Angie Han, MashableThere are lots of little moments that nods to the animated that’ll make the fans happy… a great re-telling of the animated and very fun. Wendy Lee Szany, ColliderI love the animated Mulan and this movie did it proud. Tessa Smith, Mama s GeekyRyan FujitaniBut what about the songs? It doesn t even matter that it s not a musical. If you re a fan of the animated, there are subtle nods to many of the songs. Kirsten Acuna, InsiderI didn’t even miss the songs. Angie Han, MashableWill young audiences feel empowered?Mulan is about a warrior. And that warrior is a legend. Thank you, from all the female warriors that needed this kick-A movie… I’ll be proud to show my daughters this film! Tania Lamb, Lola LambchopsThe film serves as a reminder to be true to yourself. Little girls are going to look up to Liu Yifei. Kirsten Acuna, InsiderTalk about girl power. WOW. Tessa Smith, Mama s GeekyAnd is there enough for adults to appreciate? It aims for a level of sophistication and beauty you don’t expect. Peter Sciretta, SlashfilmA more mature Disney film. Erik Davis, FandangoThe romantic chemistry gets STEAMY. Like chanting kiss in a silent theater steamy. Alison Foreman, MashableSurprisingly sexy for a Disney movie. Case in point: the very loud OH MY GOD that was uttered in the theater when Yoson An took his shirt off. Angie Han, Mashable(Photo by Walt Disney Pictures)How about the action? The action is thrilling. Peter Sciretta, SlashfilmThe first great superhero movie of 2020? It sure feels like it. She soars over rooftops, flies across walls, shoots arrows, and is just a general badass. Kirsten Acuna, InsiderAnd the visuals?Mulan is not only visually stunning, it is absolutely magical. Tessa Smith, Mama s GeekyVery beautiful and epic cinematography. It had more fantastical elements than I expected. Wendy Lee Szany, ColliderHow is the cast? The cast of Mulan is fantastic in the film… Donnie Yen is GREAT. Wendy Lee Szany, ColliderJason Scott Lee is great, but everyone else seems afraid to offend. Scott Mendelson, ForbesRyan FujitaniAre there any major problems? The poor villains and inconsistent action quality results in a mediocre movie… It’s two movies in one and it needed to decide which direction to take. Mansoor Mithaiwala, ScreenRantIt s also respectful to a fault. It doesn t truly cut loose until the climax… Lacks the gonzo energy of The Great Wall or Maleficent: Mistress of Evil. Scott Mendelson, ForbesWill wee want to see it multiple times? Can’t wait to see this again. Kirsten Acuna, InsiderI cannot wait to take my girls to see it. Tessa Smith, Mama s GeekyMulan opens on March 27.

Spoiler alert: The following article contains details about the final episode of The Boys season 2. Apparently, girls get it done on The Boys after all. The second season of the darkly hilarious Amazon Prime Video series wrapped up Friday with an explosive and fiery finale — literally — as the Boys took down the evil Nazi superhero Stormfront (Aya Cash). The win was mainly thanks to Kimiko (Karen Fukuhara) and her powers, of course, plus a little help from gal pals Starlight/Annie (Erin Moriarty) and Queen Maeve (Dominique McElligott).Rotten Tomatoes chatted with some of the women from the series about the implications of the action-packed finale and what it was like to film that memorable final Stormfront scene. Below, we break down the episode and Cash, Fukuhara, Moriarty, Shantel VanSanten (Becca Butcher), and Colby Minifie (Ashley Barrett) share their thoughts on the ending. What Happened in the Episode?(Photo by Courtesy of Amazon Studios)While our heroes were all completing their own mini-missions separately for some of the episode — including Hughie (Jack Quaid) and Annie leaking photos proving Stormfront was a literal Nazi (she s over 100 years old) — they all came together in a big showdown. Billy (Karl Urban) and Becca saved her son, Ryan (Cameron Crovetti), from his sadistic father, Homelander (Antony Starr) and his even more diabolical white power–spewing girlfriend, Stormfront.(Photo by Amazon Prime Video)Hughie, Frenchie (Tomer Capon), and Mother s Milk (Laz Alonso) all ineffectively shot at the super-protected, super-powered Stormfront with guns until Maeve showed up and the women stepped in — Starlight/Annie, Kimiko, and Maeve kicked the crap out of her until she launched herself away to safety.Unfortunately, Stormfront ended up finding Billy, Becca, and Ryan, and despite Becca stabbing her in the eye they couldn t overpower her. As Stormfront strangled Becca, Ryan s eyes lit up and everything exploded. When everyone came to, Stormfront was burnt to a crisp, missing limbs, and muttering in German, and Becca was mortally wounded. She made Billy promise yet again to protect Ryan, and also to make sure he knew that her death wasn t his fault.(Photo by Courtesy of Amazon Studios)Enter Homelander, who obviously did not take Stormfront s injury well and was not pleased that Billy was about to flee with Ryan. Before anything terrible could happen, Maeve saved the day again by blackmailing Homelander with the video of him not saving people on the airplane.Meanwhile, the higher-ups at the culty church decided it was OK that A-Train (Jessie T. Usher) stole the Stormfront photos from their archives and used their influence to let him back into the Seven, leaving the disgraced Deep (Chace Crawford) extremely pissed.(Photo by Courtesy of Amazon Studios)A congratulatory call from church bigwig Alastair Adana (Goran Visnjic) to congresswoman Victoria Neuman (Claudia Doumit) revealed that the two were in bed together somehow, which was a head-scratcher until they hung up, Alastair cracked open a Fresca, and his head exploded. Cut to Victoria staring menacingly into his window. So SHE was the one popping people s heads like grapes! This will probably not be great for Hughie next season, since the episode ended with him asking for a job so he could fight against Vought the right way. Stormfront s Fiery (and Snotty) End Took Six and a Half Hours of Prosthetics Prep(Photo by Amazon Prime Video)The image of a burned, broken, limb-less Stormfront is probably the most haunting scene from a season filled with some pretty messed-up stuff. Cash said that the disturbing look was achieved via gray sleeves to cover her limbs (which VFX artists later covered), and some very talented makeup artists. On the day, I m wearing gray sleeves to do the missing limbs and stuff like that. But I have all the prosthetics on me, which took six and a half hours to put on. And then I have Homelander coming down and snotting on my face, she said. I have like this much of my actual face visible, and I m trying to get away from the snot and I m like, The snot should land on the prosthetic, please. [Laughs] I mean, it s a very intense thing on the day. And then to watch it back, it s the magic of being on a show like this, seeing all the crazy VFX change it into something else and seeing how like sad and pathetic and ridiculous she looks at the end, as Homelander comes down to find her. It s cathartic also, Cash continued, because as much as an actor you want to find some sort of humanity in a role, Stormfront is bad, and I want her to be punished just as the audience does. Corporate Campaigning Aided a Manipulative White Supremacist s Rise(Photo by Jasper Savage/Amazon Prime Video)While Stormfront was more evil than anyone could ve predicted, her rise to prominence was certainly aided by Vought executive Ashley s girls get it done corporate PR campaign. Ashley s job is is to deal with optics, to make the optics look as good as they possibly can, Minifie (pictured above in episode 202) said. And I think it was her really brilliant idea to be like, Yeah, Girls get it done. OK, Stormfront s been dropped on my doorstep, and I m gonna serve it up some good, capitalistic feminist spin, here we go. She will do anything for those optics. But, as Cash added, Stormfront s trying to control the optics for obviously a different reason. It s not monetarily based. She wants to use them to create the genocide that she so desperately would like. But it s all about manipulation and her outward feminism in the beginning is both a misdirect and a manipulation. I think that she understands how to real people in in order to get [what she wants]. She s the YouTube algorithm. She knows what to show you next to bring you down the rabbit hole. VanSanten Shed Many, Many Tears Over Becca s Untimely End(Photo by Courtesy of Amazon Studios)VanSanten shed so many tears over Becca s death, in fact, that she felt like a weirdo for caring so deeply about her character. But she always wants the best for the people she s playing. As the human being who pours her heart and her soul into Becca, all I ever wished for was to have healing and love and redemption and all of these things. I m not going to lie, it s pretty tough to have a finality of a character and that be the end no matter what, for a story to end, she said. It s just like one of your closest, best friends — because this person lives in you in your heart and through you — and their life is now gone. How do I process that? And I can only do that by watching season 3 and being like, please, please, please! Let it not be in vain. Season 3 Will Surely Honor the Fallen Mom(Photo by Courtesy of Amazon Studios)VanSanten trusts that creator Eric Kripke will do right by Becca, however. And she s heartened by the fact that although Billy resisted taking responsibility for Ryan, he did the right thing in the end and realized that Ryan is an extension of his wife, the woman he loves so much. She is happy to watch how the stories continue to play out in the third season, because she knows Kripke and the writers are good at following up on seeds they ve planted. In the first season, some people online were concerned that Becca explicitly said that Homelander raped her, arguing that maybe it was a gray area. But VanSanten knew — and Kripke confirmed — that there was no gray area, a point that she was able to drive home in season 3; in fact, nearly all of the major female characters storylines address some form of sexual discrimination and assault. When I watch the women on our show, it isn t like we just shine this flashlight in the closet and we re like, Let s see, there s monsters in there. Oh, but look at this flashy pretty thing! We re like, No, you know what, we re gonna step in, and we re gonna fucking confront it. We re gonna call attention to it, and I don t care if it makes you uncomfortable, if you don t want to hear the R word. Too fucking bad. It exists. We need to talk about it, whether it s racism, whether it s rape, whether it s sexual assault, whether it s white supremacy — however many issues the show actually confronts, and not only confronts, but actually deals with while still being entertaining. Tiptoeing that line is something really important in TV for me to be a part of, VanSanten continued, to be able to have a bigger narrative where we get to have conversations that aren t just like, So who played the biggest joke on set?' Kimiko Studied Starlight and Becca for Social Cues(Photo by Amazon Prime Video)The fact that all the women characters are so multi-dimensional and strong while also being vulnerable at the same time is something that most of the women on the cast are proud of. They re not just strong female characters, they re also scared and tough and curious.Kimiko had a very isolated upbringing (you know, thanks to the fact that she was kidnapped by a terrorist organization). When she meets Starlight she s a little bit like, Oh, she s kind of like me, she s a woman, but she s so different from who I am. I think she has the same kind of reaction when Becca comes into the story and Becca visits the Boys hideout, Fukuhara said. She s kind of in awe of how they do certain things, their movements. It s feminine, but they also have their own will and they have their own agendas going on, especially Annie does, and it was really fun and exciting to get to play with that side of Kimiko for those themes, because it s such a new experience for her. Moriarty Says the Show s Confrontation of Tough Issues Is Admirable, Timely, and Needed(Photo by Courtesy of Amazon Studios)And like VanSanten, Moriarty is also proud that the show is tackling such important issues in such an impactful way. Sexism, racism, white supremacy, radicalization of youth via YouTube — all things that the show takes on that many other series would be afraid to touch at all. I mean, the darkness of the season, yeah, it is really dark. But then again, this year has been darker in a way that none of us could have anticipated, Moriarty said. But what s been brought to light this year is things that have always been around, they ve just come to the surface in a way where everyone is jumping on board to believe in these things and fight these things. But I think the darkness of season 2 is kind of realistic. And it s refreshing to me, because I m really sick of things that should be addressed being taboo, and being in denial of certain aspects of our society. Because when you re in denial, nothing will be improved upon or addressed.

(Photo by Focus Features)Yes, we know what you’re thinking: Just days after one of the most drama-filled awards seasons in recent memory, we are already looking ahead to next year. Best Picture winner Parasite is still in theaters, and we are several months away from the unofficial kick-off of the awards season in September. Still, we are already eyeing a list of hopefuls we think can go the distance in 2021. With Cannes re-emerging as a launching pad for contender films (Oscar winners Once Upon A Time in Hollywood and Parasite both premiered at Cannes last year, where the latter won the Palme d Or), the “Oscar movie” starting line continues to shift to earlier and earlier in the year. And following huge wins for genre-defying, foreign-language underdog-turned-Best Picture-winner Parasite, the very notion of an awards movie is ever-changing.After a fresh crop of films that premiered at Sundance in January, a number of new trailers from movies likely to be in the Oscar conversation, and festival circuit stops announced by others, we are starting to get excited. Read on to see our picks for Oscar contenders in 2020/2021 and why we are betting on them early.Don’t agree with our picks? Have at us in the comments.Mank (2020) 83% Cast: Gary Oldman, Amanda Seyfried, Charles Dance, Lily CollinsWhat it is:  A biopic about Herman J. Mankiewicz, the co-screenwriter of Citizen Kane, and his battles with co-writer Orson Welles. Why it could win: Director David Fincher has earned at least one Oscar nomination for each of his last four pictures, including the two-time Academy Award winner The Social Network. Following the success of his Netflix show Mindhunter and earlier films like Zodiac, many voters and critics are excited to see what Fincher   the new master of the historical thriller   has in store for this Hollywood tale of betrayal, inspiration, and intrigue.Promising Young Woman (2020) 90%Cast: Carey Mulligan, Bo Burnham, Alison Brie, Connie Britton, Adam Brody, Jennifer CoolidgeWhat it is: A revenge thriller/dark comedy about a young woman who moonlights as a vigilante, feigning helpless drunkenness at bars to bring justice to would-be sexual predators, until she meets an old classmate who helps her shift focus and confront her past. Why it could win: Carey Mulligan has been consistently serving award-worthy performances for the past few years (Wildlife, Suffragette, Mudbound). After a successful nomination campaign for Cynthia Erivo in Harriet, we are betting Focus Features has a plan to get the previously nominated Mulligan back in contention. Writer-director Emerald Fennell is also a threat for a screenplay award following her Emmy-nominated success with TV series Killing Eve.The White Tiger (2021) 91%Cast: Rajkummar Rao, Priyanka ChopraWhat it is: A man s rags to riches tale of self-determination comes to life in this adaptation of the Man Booker Prize-winning novel from India. Why it could win: Aravind Adiga s 2008 novel The White Tiger was an international bestseller, and director Ramin Bahrani has been a darling on the festival circuit since his breakout with 99 Holmes. With the addition of Priyanka Chopra in her first English-language lead role in a feature film, we are motivated to keep our eye on this one for end-of-year accolades.Nomadland (2020) 93%(Photo by Searchlight Pictures)Cast: Frances McDormand, David StrathairnWhat it is: A woman in her sixties loses everything and takes off on an exploration of the West, living in her van as a modern-day nomad. Why it could win: After the critical success of The Rider, we automatically signed up for anything Chloe Zhao wanted to do next. Before she set off to shoot Eternals for Marvel, Zhao filmed Nomadland, starring two-time Best Actress Oscar-winner Francis McDormand, who also shows up elsewhere on this list. We are similarly excited for what McDormand will do, and #Vanlife seems ripe for actorly drama.Dune (2021) 89% Cast: Dave Bautista, Javier Bardem, Rebecca Ferguson, Timothée ChalametWhat it is: An epic sci-fi adventure that chronicles the lives of the royal Atreides family as they strive to protect the most valuable resource in the universe. Why it could win: Dune has been at the top of just about every most anticipated film list since it was announced in late 2017. It may be a stretch as an awards contender, but the fact that Denis Villeneuve is one of the few directors capable of producing pure genre films that still appeal to Academy voters does work in his favor. Add the internet s boyfriend and voter favorite Timothée Chalamet, and it would not shock us if it became a serious contender for above- and below-the-line honors. The Forty-Year-Old Version (2020) 98% (Photo by Courtesy of Sundance Film Festival)Cast: Radha Blank, Peter Y. KimWhat it is: An aging playwright battling with the choice to stay broke or sell out turns to rapping about her life as a 40-year-old as a way to reclaim her identity. Why it could win: Radha Blank was a well established playwright within the theater community when she made her stunning debut at Sundance earlier this year. The film, which delighted critics, was quickly snapped up by Netflix. It s a no-brainer to compete for Best Original Screenplay, so we fully expect a fall roll-out and a heavy awards push from the streaming giant.Benedetta (2021) 85%Cast: Charlotte Rampling, Virginie Efira, Lambert WilsonWhat it is: A 17th-century nun beset by erotic visions forms a relationship with her caregiver, and the two women become engulfed in a passionate love affair. Why it could win: Paul Verhoeven, the director of Elle, is making an erotic lesbian nun love story based on a true story. Need we say more? If, by chance, you think this premise is too much for Academy Voters, we would remind you that Isabelle Huppert was nominated for Oscar and won a Golden Globe for Elle  a dark rape/revenge love story.Respect (2021) 68% Cast: Jennifer Hudson, Audra McDonald, Forest Whitaker, Tituss Burgess, Marc Maron, Marlon WayansWhat it is: A biopic profiling legendary singer-songwriter Aretha Franklin. Why it could win: Musical biopics have worked out rather well, particularly recently, for people like Renee Zellweger and Rami Malek, as well as past Oscar winners like Jamie Foxx, Reese Witherspoon, Barbra Streisand, and Sissy Spacek, so it could do the same for Jennifer Hudson as Aretha Franklin in Respect. Hudson had previously sung her way to an Oscar in 2007 s Dreamgirls, so the long-awaited feature about the Queen of Soul has promise, and thankfully, we expect it won t need much CGI like her last musical offering, Cats. The Eyes of Tammy Faye (2021) 66%Cast: Jessica Chastain, Vincent D Onofrio, Andrew GarfieldWhat it is: A drama charting the rise and fall of televangelists Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker, particularly through the lens of the latter. The film is a narrative adaptation of the 2000 documentary of the same name. Why it could win: Televangelists Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker were reality stars before the Kardashians, and they came with more baggage. They were two of the richest, most popular personalities on television at the height of their success, and their fall from grace was tabloid fodder for decades and tailor-made for awards consideration. Throw in two-time Oscar nominee Jessica Chastain and Best Actor nominee Andrew Garfield, as well as director Michael Showalter, who directed the Oscar-nominated The Big Sick, and there s plenty of reason to think this will resonate with the Academy. In the Heights (2021) 94% Cast: Anthony Ramos, Corey Hawkins, Jimmy Smits, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Stephanie Beatriz, Marc Anthony, Dascha PolancoWhat it is: The big-screen adaptation of Lin-Manuel Miranda s Tony-winning Broadway musical about life in the Washington Heights neighborhood of Manhattan, New York. Why it could win: The fact that the original musical won a Tony is reason enough to get excited about In the Heights, but with the addition of Crazy Rich Asians director Jon M. Chu, we have had a hard time picturing anything topping one of the new songs from this film for Best Original Song in 2020. The colorful visuals and production design we spied in the trailer also had us instantly buzzing.Hillbilly Elegy (2020) 25%Cast: Amy Adams, Glenn Close, Haley Bennett, Freida PintoWhat it is: The film adaptation of J. D. Vance s acclaimed memoir chronicling three generations of his Appalachian family. Why it could win: He has not been in the Awards conversation for over a decade, but double Oscar winner Ron Howard is always a threat, and Netflix is betting big on the memoir s long-awaited adaptation. With the inclusion of two actresses (Amy Adams and Glenn Close) who have 13 Oscar nominations but zero wins between them, there will be a lot of eyes on Hillbilly Elegy come fall.Tenet (2020) 70%Cast: John David Washington, Robert Pattinson, Elizabeth DebickiWhat it is: A mindbending sci-fi tale about time travel and a race to save the world. Why it could win: Christopher Nolan behind the camera alone should be enough for anyone, but Robert Pattinson, Elizabeth Debicki, and John David Washington make Tenet a must-see, albeit a risky bet, for nominations morning, as Tenet might be too genre to capture Oscar voters attention. Still, Nolan earned nominations for Inception and Memento, so his latest, which looks like a cross between the two, is difficult not to picture on the Oscar stage.Greyhound (2020) 79%Cast: Tom Hanks, Elisabeth Shue, Rob Morgan, Karl GlusmanWhat it is: In WWII, 37 Allied ships cross the treacherous North Atlantic while hotly pursued by a fleet of Nazi U-boats during the lead captain s first command. Why it could win: It s hard to bet against a Tom Hanks war movie. After Hanks broke a nearly 20-year Oscar nomination drought with his Best Supporting Actor nom for A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, we like his chances for this based-on-true-events story, which he both wrote and leads on screen. The French Dispatch (2021) 80% Cast: Benicio Del Toro, Adrien Brody, Tilda Swinton, Timothée Chalamet, Frances McDormand, Bill Murray, Owen Wilson, Saoirse Ronan, Léa SeydouxWhat it is: A film anthology of the stories from the final issue of an American magazine published in a fictionalized version of 20th century France. Why it could win: Wes Anderson has been nominated for seven Academy Awards and has never won not even for the beloved The Grand Budapest Hotel, which seems a downright tragedy. However, with this cast of Oscar winners and an expected glitzy debut on the festival circuit later this year, The French Dispatch is an early favorite to lead all nominations next January.Passing (2021) 86%Cast: Alexander Skarsgård, Tessa Thompson, Ruth NeggaWhat it is: Two white-presenting Black women are forced to confront their own choices, and each other, after they reunite to learn one is living as a white woman and the other as Black. Why it could win: Based on Nella Larson s award-winning novel, the premise alone has critics and film fans intrigued. Written and helmed by Rebecca Hall (an actress who s a magnet for stellar scripts built for powerhouse performances), we are anticipating a story that gives stars Tessa Thompson and Ruth Negga plenty of material for an awards highlight reel.Minari (2020) 98% (Photo by A24 films)Cast: Steven Yeun, Han Yeri, Youn Yuh-JungWhat it is: A family drama seen through the eyes of a seven-year-old Korean-American boy whose father moves the family from California to rural Arkansas to learn to farm and make a better life. Why it could win: A24 s Minari left Sundance riding high on praise from critics and, as of today, it s still Fresh at 100%. A quiet story about an Asian-American family with an eccentric grandmother is what earned Lulu Wang s The Farewell the top prize at the Independent Spirit Awards this year, even if it didn t break through with Oscar voters. Starring indie darling Steven Yeun in the lead role, Minari could succeed where The Farewell and Yeun s previous awards contender Burning fell short.Thumnail images by Warner Bros. On Sunday night, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) handed out the 2019 Golden Globes and, as is often the case with the Golden Globes, they delivered some surprises. Rami Malek, Bohemian Rhapsody, Glenn Close, and Green Book didn t walk into the Beverly Hilton on Sunday night favored to win, but each walked out with a Globe statuette.  Check out our recap of the best moments from the ceremony here.Owing to its position on the calendar and ability to host a star-studded awards ceremony, the Globes are often looked at as a measuring stick for awards season. But with such a small voting body it’s unwise to put too much faith in the Globes results as a predictor of Oscar winners or nominations. No slight on the HFPA, but a group of 90 international film journalist cannot be expected to predict the voting habits of 7,258 industry professionals. Since the Academy expanded the Best Picture category to include up to 10 nominees in 2009, only 59% of Golden Globe Best Picture nominees have earned Oscar nominations.Looked at more closely, it can seem that the Golden Globes are more a reaction point than any sort of clear indicator. A snub by the HFPA can spark indignation that helps, or damages, a film or performer s Oscar chances. Last year Three Billboards Outside of Ebbing, Missouri won the GG for Best Drama and the backlash that was already brewing to that film finally bubbled over, likely turning some Oscar voters toward Guillermo Del Toro’s The Shape of Water, which later won Best Picture at the Academy Awards. The same could be said for La La Land vs. Moonlight in 2016; Moonlight won the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture Drama, but was shut out in all the other categories – snubs that only added supporters to its bandwagon come Oscar time. With all this in mind, what do Sunday night’s wins and losses mean for this year’s awards landscape?A Star Dims, But Only Somewhat(Photo by @ Warner Bros. )A Star Is Born has fizzled but not completely faded; save the win for Best Song, the film was shut out of many awards, notably Best Actress Drama for Lady Gaga. It s not out of what is still a very wide-open Best Picture race, but it needs some wins. Look to this weekend’s Critics Choice awards for added momentum, but if Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper fall short again then the movie s chances of big Oscar wins will be er, shallower.Best Supporting Actor Is Still Undecided (Photo by © Fox Searchlight)Can You Ever Forgive Me? s Richard E. Grant lost to Green Book s Mahershala Ali for Best Supporting Actor, but we think that has a lot to do with Ali s having been shut out of a GG nomination for Moonlight a few years ago (and going on to win the Oscar). With a healthy number of wins from the critics guilds, Grant is still very much in contention. Same can be said for First Reformed s Ethan Hawke (for a Best Actor nomination), Eight Grade s Bo Burham (writing and directing), and Roma s Yalitza Aparicio (Best Actress), none of whom were nominated for the Globes but each of whom have enough momentum with critics groups to keep them top of mind with Academy voters.King Continues Her Reign(Photo by @ NBC)Regina King’s winning streak continues – after a slight bump with that bizarre SAG snub. King s work in If Beale Street Could Talk is the most honored performance of 2018 – with nearly 40 nominations and 20 wins – and her Oscar win is looking more and more assured. With momentum and buzz being just as important as the performance, King’s rousing acceptance speech was a final word to silence any naysayers (we pity the conductor who tried to play her off).

(Photo by © IFC Midnight)Female creators are at the cutting edge of modern horror, turning out some of its most inspired, and twisted, offerings. Babadook director Jennifer Kent is one big name you might have heard of, but she s at the crest of a huge wave of talent that s likely to be splattering multiplexes with blood for decades to come.Joining them is actor-turned-writer Kristen Ruhlin, who spoke recently with Rotten Tomatoes about what inspired her to move into the bloody world of horror. It s a tale many female actors and writers tell: she wasn t finding stories that spoke to her. One of my close friends suggested I just write my own thing and stop relying on other people,” she said. The result is Welcome to Mercy, out in limited release November 2, which draws on her religious upbringing to craft a hair-raising tale of abduction and the occult, and one with a specifically female focus. Ruhlin plays Madeline, a young single mother stricken with stigmata, sent to a remote convent where nothing is what it seems.  The correlation between religion and horror goes back to…people searching for answers to things that we can t explain, and that can be itself frightening. As Ruhlin s movie hits theaters in limited release, and film media turns its focus on women in the horror genre, we ve picked five films to watch from female horror filmmakers who are absolutely slaying right now.
