电子真人在线采用百度引擎4(Baidu 0)Breakthrough (2019) 63% Faith-based movies are being made and released more frequently than ever, but they rarely come with the kind of mainstream-friendly cast that Breakthrough boasts, and you can go a long way when you ve got solid, experienced performers on board. Chrissy Metz (This Is Us) and Josh Lucas play Joyce and Brian Smith, adoptive parents to John (Marcel Ruiz), a 14-year-old from Guatemala. They re also Evangelical Christians, so when John falls into a coma after suffering a near-death drowning accident, they set about praying for his recovery alongside their community, who has rallied around them. The film is based on a true story, and inspirational Christian movies never end sadly, so you can guess how everything turns out, but critics don t entirely seem to mind. They say the story is appropriately uplifting and the cast, which includes Mike Colter (Luke Cage), Topher Grace, and Dennis Haysbert, all put in strong work. It s all a little predictable, and it s not especially nuanced, but the right performances from a capable cast can do a lot to make up for some narrative and thematic shortcomings.

For years, feature film takes on beloved games like Super Mario Bros. and FarCry have been the butt of jokes thanks to producers who take the title and little else from the source material. Even more recent, high-gloss, and faithful efforts seem to lose something in the translation. (See our guide to 47 Video Game Movies Ranked Worst to Best. )But Paramount+ hopes to buck that tragic big-budget trend with a high-end series based on Microsoft’s epic game franchise Halo. As Showtime Networks co-president Gary Levine put it at the 2019 Television Critics Association summer press tour, “Our challenge on this series was to take a video game and make it into a character drama that belongs on Showtime.” Two years later, Showtime’s corporate parent, ViacomCBS, announced the series would instead be one that belongs on its rebranded Paramount+ streaming service.Navigating the landscape from game mechanics to filmed entertainment is often as difficult as any mission series main character Master Chief confronts, but here are the details we know so far about the Paramount+ Halo series.[Updated on 2/24/21]1. It Is Based Upon a Huge Game Universe(Photo by Elizabeth Goodenough/Everett Collection)Beginning with 2001’s Halo: Combat Evolved, the Halo series charts the ongoing conflict between a spacefaring humanity in the 26th century and an alien theocracy known as the Covenant. In that first game, Master Chief John-117, a genetically enhanced Spartan supersoldier encased in advanced armor, faces off against the Covenant for control of a Halo — a ring-shaped space station/super weapon created by an ancient and extinct race the Covenant worship as gods. The game changed the perception of first-person shooters on home consoles and gave Microsoft its first huge win in that market when the game was released as a launch title for the original XBox.Sequels followed — five so far in the main series with a sixth, Halo Infinite, due out in 2021 (we hope) — and a surprising number of spin-offs. New characters appeared to play off against the stoic Master Chief and the spin-offs further developed the Halo universe by featuring more story-driven first-person shooters or switching to other game mechanics like Real Time Strategy. Books, comics, and animated series further deepened the breadth of the franchise s universe and history. The television series will attempt to “weave deeply drawn personal stories with action and adventure set within that richly imagined vision of the future.” Anchoring those stories will be Master Chief, played by American Gods’ Pablo Schreiber (pictured). In a 2019 interview, Levine told Rotten Tomatoes and a small group of reporters that Schreiber has “the physicality to be a Spartan, to be Master Chief. But he is [also] a great dramatic actor.” A mention of Schreiber’s comedic chops and the “twinkle in his eye” suggests Master Chief may be seen without his helmet or armor; a first for Halo should it happen. Although Levine added, “we’re not violating anything big,” so Master Chief may remain within his armor throughout the series.2. Steven Spielberg Is Involved (Sort Of)(Photo by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures /Courtesy Everett Collection)Since 2013, Spielberg’s Amblin Television has been involved in developing the current iteration of the Halo TV project. At that time, he was said to be on board as an executive producer, but it seems he will not take on any direct creative duties. Nonetheless, there is always the potential he will take an interest in the series, particularly as it focuses on two of his favorite topics: war and aliens.Microsoft’s 343 Industries — an entity it established to manage the Halo brand following the departure of original developer Bungie — will also produce the series, suggesting a level of direct developer control seen only with Ubisoft producing 2016 s Assassin’s Creed. That film, however, proved developer input may not lead to a great adaptation as that film only garnered a 19% on the Tomatometer and an audience score of 43%.3. Its Cast Reflects Halo’s Past And Future(Photo by Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection)Joining Master Chief on this television journey will be Yerin Ha as Quan Ah, a new character devised specifically for the series. First announced alongside Schreiber, the character is described as a “shrewd, audacious 16-year-old from the Outer Colonies who meets Master Chief at a fateful time for them both.” The series will also feature Californication’s Natascha McElhone (pictured), Fargo’s Bokeem Woodbine, Shabana Azmi, Bentley Kalu, Natasha Culzac, and Kate Kennedy.McElhone will play Dr. Catherine Halsey, inventor of the Spartan super-soldiers and Cortana, the advance AI who is the key to humanity’s survival and a constant element in Master Chief’s adventures. Cortana is also the name of Microsoft’s AI assistant on its platforms; the name was, in fact, derived from Halo. At one point, McElhone was set to voice Cortana, but scheduling issues led to the character s original voice, Jen Taylor, stepping in and creating one bit of continuity with the games.Woodbine will take on the role of Soren-066, another established Halo character. He is an old friend of Master Chief’s and a privateer in conflict with the military — which means he may come into direct conflict with Azmi’s character, Admiral Margaret Parangosky, the head of Naval Intelligence and another character from the games who seemingly places the Halo TV series in a specific part of the franchise’s history. But, as Levine said, “you re going to get new information in our series, but we are not going to violate any of the things in the canon.”Kalu, Culzac, and Kennedy all play new characters to the Halo universe with familiar affiliations. Kalu is Spartan Vannak-134, Master Chief’s de facto deputy. Culzac is Spartan Riz-028, a “cybernetically enhanced killing machine,” and Kennedy is Spartan Kai-125, another Spartan super-soldier tasked to the mission. Actors Yerin Ha, Charlie Murphy, Olive Gray, and Danny Sapani are also part of the series in unspecified roles.”4. It Has Great Talent in the Writers’ RoomExploring the “richly imagined universe” is executive producer and showrunner Kyle Killen, creator of critically acclaimed Lone Star (83% on the Tomatometer) and the fan-favorite NBC series Awake (89% Audience Score). Both series featured protagonist who faced dual realities — literally in the case of Awake’s Micheal Britten (Jason Isaacs). Both shows also faced tough competition on broadcast television and did not last beyond their initial episode orders; nonetheless, a 10-episode cable series may turn out to be the best format for Killen as a writer and producer. And should Halo s protagonist find themselves caught between two worlds — say humanity versus the culture of The Covenant — Killen will be a great fit for the material. The Last Ship’s Steven Kane also serves as showrunner alongside Killen. His TNT series has an 83% on the Tomatometer and proved to be success on that network over the course of five seasons. Kane reportedly oversees production in Budapest while Killen supervises writing and other stateside production efforts. Also, the initial episodes will be directed by Robin Hood’s Otto Bathurst, who replaced Rupert Wyatt due to scheduling conflicts.“[He] is a marvelous director,” Levine said of Bathurst. “Unbelievably passionate about the project, and he has been leading our team beautifully.”5. This Is Not the First Attempt Adapt Halo(Photo by Vanguard Cinema)Halo nearly became a feature film in the early part of the 21st century. In 2005, 20th Century Fox and Universal picked up the project thanks in part to a script written by Annhilation’s Alex Garland. According to Garland, the story was a fairly faithful adaptation of the two Halo games available at the time. Peter Jackson was poised to produce with both Guillermo del Toro and Neill Blomkamp eyeing the director’s chair. Sadly, tough negotiations between the studios, Jackson, and producer Peter Schlessel led to the project’s collapse. After to the project’s implosion, Blomkamp said he would have used Master Chief as “the most important supporting cast member” with other characters doing “most of the emotional heavy lifting.”Since the time of the failed feature attempt, Microsoft produced two live-action webseries which were later released as films: Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn and Halo: Nightfall. The latter was produced by Ridley Scott’s production company Scott Free and featured Luke Cage’s Mike Colter as Agent Jameson Locke, a playable character in Halo 5: Guardians.6. The Switch to Paramount+Although intended to be a Showtime original series, David Nevins, CBS Chief Creative Officer and Showtime Networks Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, surprised reporters during a February 2021 Investor Day presentation by adding the program to the Paramount+ roster. The streaming service, a rebrand of the existing CBS All Access, intends to encompass more of ViacomCBS’s programming. According to Nevins, Halo fits right in with the sort of content the streaming service intends to highlight. “From all the early glimpses we’ve seen, it’s crystal clear that Halo is a visually stunning thrill-ride, anchored in riveting, character-driven storytelling,” he said. “With such tremendous appeal to every audience, we realized Halo had the potential to become a defining show for what will become the broadest streaming platform at ViacomCBS – the new Paramount+.” Showtime will still be involved as a producer alongside 343 Industries and Amblin.7. What s the Status? Production began in Budapest during the fall of 2019, but the COVID-19 pandemic led to a long delay. It is currently in production again with Paramount+ setting it for an early 2022 debut. On an Apple device? Follow Rotten Tomatoes on Apple News.

This week s Ketchup brings you another nice headlines from the world of film development news (the stories about what movies Hollywood is working on for you next), covering such titles as The Suicide Squad, The Eternals, and Halloween Kills. This WEEK S TOP STORYTAIKA WAITITI JUMPING THE GUNN ONTO THE SUICIDE SQUAD IN UNKNOWN ROLE(Photo by Jasin Boland/© Marvel / © Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures /Courtesy Everett Collection)Last year, Walt Disney Pictures briefly fired director James Gunn from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (if you re wondering why Marvel s not moving forward on that movie faster, that s the reason) over old jokes in poor taste were found on his Twitter feed. James Gunn has since been hired back, but in the meantime, he jumped ship to work for Warner Bros and DC Comics for The Suicide Squad, which will be a soft reboot sequel to the 2016 super villain movie starring Will Smith and Margot Robbie. This week, James Gunn cast one of his frequent collaborators as well as one of Marvel s stars. First up was Nathan Fillion, who previously worked with James Gunn on both Slither and Super, and who also had a cameo voice acting role in the first Guardians of the Galaxy. The biggest surprise, however, came with the news that Taika Waititi will also have a role in The Suicide Squad. In addition to directing Thor: Ragnarok (in which he also voiced the alien Korg), Taika Waititi is also returning to write and direct Thor: Love and Thunder (11/3/2021), which will come out less than three months after The Suicide Squad. James Gunn also this week cast comedian Steve Agee to provide the voice of the monstrous super villain King Shark. Warner Bros has scheduled The Suicide Squad for release on August 6, 2021, which will be five days after the fifth anniversary of the release of Suicide Squad on August 1, 2016.Other Top Headlines1. KIT HARRINGTON TAKING THE BLACK (KNIGHT) AGAIN IN MARVEL S THE ETERNALS(Photo by George Kraychyk/©TriStar Pictures/courtesy Everett Collection)One of the big reveals at Disney s D23 this past weekend was the casting of Kit Harrington as Dane Whitman, AKA Marvel s Black Knight, in next year s The Eternals (11/6/2020). Harrington will be joined by Richard Madden, he of Robb Stark in Game of Thrones, as Ikaris. This came along with confirmation that Gemma Chan will costar in The Eternals just one year after she also costarred in Captain Marvel as the Kree warrior Minn-Erva. The inclusion of Black Knight and Minn-Erva in The Eternals is significant because both characters were long-time members of The Avengers from the 1980s to the 1990s. Black Knight actually first joined as the 14th Avenger in 1969, in-between Vision in 1968 and Black Widow in 1973. So if one wants to speculate about a future Avengers movie, they re both possibilities.2. BLACK PANTHER II SNAGS MARVEL S BIGGEST RELEASE DATE FOR THE SUMMER OF 2022(Photo by Marvel / © Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures /Courtesy Everett Collection)Marvel Studios didn t invent the notion of the weekend closest to May 1st being the best spot to start the summer season (that was arguably the 1999 reboot of The Mummy), but they ve certainly perfected the move. In recent years, that has included Avengers: Age of Ultron (5/1/2015), Captain America: Civil War (5/6/2016), Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (5/5/2017), Avengers: Infinity War (4/27/2018), and Avengers: Endgame (4/26/2019), and will include Black Widow (5/1/2020) and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (5/7/2020). One of the highly anticipated films that was left out of Marvel s big panel of announcements at SDCC this year was Black Panther II, but we learned last weekend that they were just saving that news for D23, where Marvel revealed that Black Panther II is scheduled for May 6, 2022. No other premise or cast details were confirmed, but presumably, Chadwick Boseman, Martin Freeman, Danai Gurira, and Letitia Wright will all be back.3. BOYHOOD DIRECTOR TO SPEND 20 YEARS FILMING MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG(Photo by Wilson Webb/©Lionsgate/courtesy Everett Collection)As of this writing in 2019, Broadway singer/actor Ben Platt is 25, and actress Beanie Feldstein is 26. But when their new movie comes out, they ll be more like 45 and 46. That s because Platt and Feldstein have both signed to star in a new musical from director Richard Linklater, who famously spent 12 years making the 2014 Academy Award-winning drama Boyhood. That musical will be an adaptation of Stephen Sondheim s 1981 play Merrily We Roll Along, which was itself based on the 1934 play of the same name. Sondheim s play was set across a period from 1957 to 1976, and as with Boyhood, Richard Linklater plans on filming Merrily We Go Along over a 20 year period just like how its plot unfolds. Presuming Merrily We Roll Along is released around 2039 or 2040, Richard Linklater (born 7/30/1960) will be between 78 and 80.4. JAMIE FOXX AND TINA FEY TO STAR IN NEXT YEAR S SECOND PIXAR FILM, SOUL (Photo by Walt Disney Studios)As much of an info dump as San Diego Comic-Con is, Disney s own D23 convention almost matches that. This year, a lot of that went to the upcoming Disney+ streaming app s content, but Disney itself made a few big feature film announcements. We ve known for a while now that Pixar s next film will be Onward (3/6/2020), a modern fantasy starring MCU stars Tom Holland and Chris Pratt. But that s not all for Pixar in 2020: They also have Soul on their schedule for release on June 16, 2020. Pixar revealed at D23 that the stars of Soul will be Jamie Foxx and Tina Fey. Fey will voice a disembodied human soul in the afterlife, with Jamie Foxx voicing a music teacher who appears to kick it just before a big career opportunity (cue the comparisons to Mr. Holland s Opus and also Pixar s Coco). Foxx and Fey will also be joined by the voices of Daveed Diggs (Blindspotting), Questlove (of The Roots and The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon), and Phylicia Rashad (TV s The Cosby Show), with Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails) collaborating on the film s score.5. PAUL RUDD GROWS UP TO BE ANTHONY MICHAEL HALL IN NEXT YEAR S HALLOWEEN KILLS (Photo by Vertical Entertainment / courtesy Everett Collection)Quite the phenomenon when a future megastar gets their career start in a horrible horror movie. Take, for example, Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers, the sixth film in the horror franchise, which featured Paul Rudd as Tommy Doyle, one of the kids Laurie Strode was babysitting in the first movie. Jamie Lee Curtis returned as Laurie Strode in last year s hit soft reboot sequel Halloween (which earned over 5 million worldwide), and she s returning for Halloween Kills (10/16/2020) and (possibly) Halloween Ends (10/15/2021), which will soon be filmed back-to-back. Paul Rudd was indeed approached about returning as Tommy Doyle, but due to scheduling conflicts with Ghostbusters 2020 (7/10/2020), Tommy Doyle will instead be played by Anthony Michael Hall. Rudd and Hall may not resemble each other, but if the Halloween slasher franchise now serves as a nostalgia feast, the casting of the costar of 1980s movies like Sixteen Candles, Weird Science, and The Breakfast Club fits that theme perfectly.6. DISNEY ANIMATION S POST-FROZEN II TO BE RAYA AND THE LAST DRAGON (Photo by Disney)Disney has had a mystery project scheduled for November 25, 2020 for a while, but it wasn t until last weekend s D23 that Disney revealed that it will be Raya and the Last Dragon. The animated fantasy adventure will be set in a fictional kingdom called Kumandra, which will be inspired by the cultures of Southeast Asia. Raya and the Last Dragon will mark the directorial debuts of Paul Briggs and Dean Wellins, who previously worked on Disney movies like Big Hero 6 and Zootopia. The screenplay is being written by Adele Lim, whose Crazy Rich Asians featured Awkwafina, now also a voice role in Raya. The title character to be voiced by Cassie Steele of TV s Degrassi: The Next Generation.7. EVA LONGORIA TO DIRECT THE FLAMIN HOT CHEETOS MOVIE(Photo by Bauer Martinez Films/courtesy Everett Collection)Fox Searchlight has been moving forward with plans for a movie called Flamin Hot about how the popular brand of Cheetos snack foods came to be. They re hiring Eva Longoria to direct the true story of Richard Montanez, who was a janitor at Frito-Lay when he came up with the Flamin Hot Cheetos concept after noticing that regular Cheetos were not as flavorful as Mexican snacks on the same convenience store shelves.8. HAPPY DEATH DAY DIRECTOR TO BODY SWAP VINCE VAUGHN AND 22-YEAR-OLD KATHRYN NEWTON(Photo by Giles Keyte / © Warner Bros. / courtesy Everett Collection)Director Chris Landon is newly available as it appears unlikely that Happy Death Day will receive another sequel after this year s box office disappointment of 2U, which earned just million domestically. For his next film, Landon will cowrite and direct a body swapping thriller. Vince Vaughn will star as a deranged serial killer whose body is taken over by a high school student played by 22-year-old Kathryn Newton, whose previous work includes Paranormal Activity 4 and Detective Pikachu.Like this? How well do Kevin Hart and Dwayne Johnson know their own movies? And how do they react when they come face-to-face – or, at least, face-to-text – with their critics? That s what we found out when we sat down with the Jumanji: The Next Level leads for a game of Name the Review. The concept is simple: Each actor reads the other a line from a review of one of their films – then they have to guess the movie being referenced. Which film was merely tolerable ? And how does Hart react to that blunt assessment? Find out in the video above. And be sure to play along – you may know the guys careers even better than they do.

With WandaVision revealing just how expansive and stylish Marvel Studios’ series on Disney+ can be and with The Falcon an Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame directors Anthony and Joe Russo are reteaming with Tom Holland, but the project is a dramatic change of pace and scale from their previous work: In Apple TV+’s drama Cherry, Holland plays an army medic who returns home with PTSD and turns to crime – and, crushingly, drugs – to deal with his trauma. Ahead of the movie’s release in theaters and then on streaming, Rotten Tomatoes correspondent Erik Davis spoke with the Russo Brothers, Holland, and co-star Ciara Bravo about bringing a story to the big and small screens that they hope will open people’s minds about the substance abuse crisis in the US. Plus, the filmmaking duo reveals why they chose Cherry as the follow-up to the biggest film in history and tease a return to the superhero genre sooner than we think (potentially outside the MCU), while Holland says he wants to work with them for as long as he possibly can.Cherry is in theaters Friday, February 26, 2021 and on Apple TV+ from Friday, March 12, 2021.On an Apple device? 电子真人在线 (Photo by Leon Bennett/Getty Images for Essence)Certified Fresh romance Love Basketball was the breakout hit for director Gina Prince-Bythewood. It has become a hallmark of Black cinema, and impacted the industry by blending romance and sports in a new way. Since then, she has worked on projects in other genres because she refuses to be pigeonholed – both in TV and film. (Though she did return to romance, triumphantly, in the acclaimed drama Beyond the Lights.)Her latest film, the big-budget adaptation of Greg Rucka s graphic novel, The Old Guard, was perhaps her biggest departure yet. Starring Charlize Theron, Kiki Layne, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and more, the action flick hit Netflix last year after a planned theatrical release was scuttled by the COVID-19 pandemic. Action is a genre that few women get the opportunity to tackle, and there are even fewer Black women at the helm of big-budget action features. Prince-Bythewood may have pushed the door open a little further: The Old Guard was a huge success for the streaming service, with 72 million views in the first month of release and talk of a sequel. She is following it up with The Woman King, starring Viola Davis as General Nanisca of Dahomey, who leads all-female unit known as the Dahomey Amazons who fought back against the French in the 19th century.Read more: Filmmaker Selects: Alma Har el s 10 Movies (and a Series) for Women s History MonthRead more: Filmmaker Selects: Issa Lópex s 10 Movies For Women s History MonthAs part of our “Filmmaker Selects” series for Women’s History Month, Prince-Bythewood shared 10 films from creatives that inspired her, and spoke with Top Critic Valerie Complex about what makes her tick, her favorite directors, and what the future is looking like for women filmmakers.Gina Prince-Bythewood on the set of The Old Guard. (Photo by Mohammad Kamal © Netflix 2020)Valerie Complex for Rotten Tomatoes: Do you miss the movie theater?Gina Prince-Bythewood: Yes! I love the collective theater experience of sitting with a group of people I don’t know, yet we all laugh/cry at the same thing. I love sitting in the theater when those opening credits come up. Especially when it s a movie that I’ve done and it s an exciting moment we all have to miss right now. What was the first film that made you really want to become a director?Prince-Bythewood: It s interesting because I didn t have that epiphany watching a movie. I had that epiphany that I was a director working on a movie. I was working on a student film at UCLA. I was on set and looked around then it hit me in that moment: you re a director. From then on, I worked on improving the craft and watching great films, which is the benefit of film school. You get to see so many movies that you normally wouldn t be able to. As time moved forward, I became more and more enamored with the craft and the power of filmmaking.Being on set, what were some of the challenges you remember having when shooting your first feature Love Basketball?Prince-Bythewood: While in school, you’re given room to fail, but for Love Basketball, that was my first shot. I worked on the script for so long and fought hard to make it. I was in a constant state of anxiety that I couldn t fail. It was the fear of: If I blow this, I’ll blow my entire career. Working on the film, the crew developed a sense of family, and everyone there wanted me to win, which helped fuel me to see it through to the end.Gina Prince-Bythewood and Sanaa Lathan while making Love Basketball. (Photo by © New Line Cinema)When you talk about that collective anxiety about failure, where does that stem from for you? Is it like a collective thing of being a woman, and being a woman of color? Was it being new in the industry? All of the above?Prince-Bythewood: It’s history. Women, Black folks, and people of color don t have the luxury of failure in this industry. It is very hard to get a second film, and a third film. Suddenly, you look around and you don t see anybody that looks like you – and I learned this pretty early on in my career. Are there any particular women filmmakers that you admire?Prince-Bythewood: Well, there is Kathryn Bigelow, and Euzhan Palcy – she is someone who looks like me, and is working with people like Marlon Brando. Then there is Kasi Lemmons who directed Eve s Bayou. It’s a film I respect immensely and was so different from anything that had come out before it. When Eve s Bayou came out, it was on such another level. The craft, the storytelling, the performances inspired me. The two sisters and their story, the performance that she got from Journee Smollett and Meagan Good, that movie stayed with me. I thought it was such an incredible debut from Kasi. I’ll never forget when I met Kasi before directing Love Basketball, and she was so giving of her time, support, and encouragement.Adepero Oduye in Dee Rees Pariah. (Photo by © Focus Features)What new filmmakers are you into right now?Prince-Bythewood: There are also some dope young women out there. I get excited, not only by their work and their talent, but the fight. I know what it takes to get a film made, and for them to have the grit to get it done is impressive. There is Dee Rees, her film Pariah blew me away. I loved Tina Mabry’s film Mississippi Damned; Little Woods by Nia DaCosta, and looking forward to her next film Candyman; and Channing Godfrey Peoples, who impressed me with Miss Juneteenth.Miss Juneteenth is such a great film.Prince-Bythewood: The movie took me into a world that I had no idea existed. There are a couple of scenes in there that are devastating to watch in the best way. Peoples did phenomenal world-building, which brought me into this small Texas community and taught me something. I cared about Turquoise (Nicole Beharie) and her daughter Kai (Alexis Chikaeze). She wants a better life for them both, and will do what it takes to change her circumstance. I just think Peoples created something special.I hear you really enjoyed Mati Diop’s first feature film, Atlantics, as well. I saw that one at Cannes in 2019.Prince-Bythewood: There was a lot of buzz about it, and I finally got a screener to watch it. I’m glad I didn’t know much about the film because it was exciting to experience that way. It s a quiet, beautiful movie, and I was just so invested in the love story. It’s beautiful, surprising, and heartbreaking.Radha Blank in The Forty-Year-Old Version. (Photo by © Netflix)And one of your favorites of last year is The Forty-Year-Old Version, which is written and directed by Radha Blank.Prince-Bythewood: Blank created something with all the elements: There’s drama, comedy, and an honest depiction of one woman s life who works in the creative arts. She has a fresh voice and clear vision that’s dope, dynamic, and bold. And shooting in black-and-white? A brilliant touch. I also loved the music and how it helps tell the story. It’s the best kind of humor because it comes from a place of truth.Your portfolio is super diversified. Like you got action, drama, romance. Do you like to do it all? Do you want to experiment with horror next? What s coming?Prince-Bythewood: I love every genre except for horror and westerns. I can t even tell you why. That s not to say I can t recognize a great western or horror film, but it s not my thing. Personally, I crave to do another love story. That is my favorite genre. However, I certainly want to see women, particularly Black women, creating in every genre. The next thing I am working on is The Woman King with Viola Davis. It s a historical epic. I m so hyped about the project because it’s a beautiful story, and we don’t often get epics of this caliber with women at the forefront.Kiki Layne with Gina Prince-Bythewood on the set of The Old Guard. (Photo by Amy Spinks / © Netflix)Do you think, since you directed Love Basketball, that the industry has changed for women filmmakers?Prince-Bythewood: It s interesting you asked that, because I came across an interview I did 21 years ago during the press tour for Love Basketball, and I talked about my hopes for the future, and the fact that we re still having those conversations 21 years later is wild to me. When I shot The Old Guard I thought to myself that few women get the opportunity to do big tent-pole and action films. When I was in film school we had Kathryn Bigelow. She was the only woman I knew doing big-budget movies. This past year, seven of us – and the majority of us, women of color – got the opportunity to do the high title films. However, you can’t get too excited though because you see the actual numbers and it s like, Oh my God, how is this still happening? How are we at 12% of anything?! But it’s important to remember there are so many great films by a fantastic group of women that are in the awards conversation this year and it s long overdue.Kathryn Bigelow on the set of Point Break in 1991. (Photo by Courtesy the Everett Collection)What do you hope to see for the future for not just women directors, but for Black women specifically? Paint a picture of how that would work if you had it your way.Prince-Bythewood: More Black women in the director s chair. I had this conversation with Regina King for another publication and we talked about that, what we bring as Black women to our storytelling. Hollywood needs to understand that we all bring something different, that we are not a monolith. We don t all share the same experiences, so we need women who are bringing different things, in different genres to the table. My life experiences are what s important to me and a large part of my work. Things are wide open, and there are so many stories and different perspectives to share. I want all of these women to have the opportunity to tell a story that no one else can tell.Gina Prince-Bythewood s The Old Guard is available on Netflix; Love Basketball, The Secret Life of Bees, and Beyond the Lights are available on Vudu and FandangoNOW.
