欧宝官方app采用百度引擎5(Baidu 0)What Will Happen to Jesse in El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie? What s in store for Jesse Pinkman? And will we see Walter White? We explore everything the brand new trailer tells us about El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie.Posted by The Rotten Tomatoes Channel on Tuesday, September 24, 2019Six years after Jesse Pinkman drove off into the New Mexico night, Aaron Paul returns to reprise the role that made him a star in El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie. We last saw Pinkman breaking free from Jack s (Michael Bowen) Nazi compound. He was held prisoner by the group with the sole purpose of creating Heisenberg s signature meth until Walter White (Bryan Cranston) mowed the clan down with a semi-automatic weapon attached to the trunk of his car, liberating Jesse in the process.Vince Gilligan decided a proper send-off was in order for White s former protégé, penning the script and stepping behind the camera to direct the final leg in Pinkman s emotional journey. But is El Camino a necessary story to add to Gilligan s Breaking Bad universe? That depends on who you talk to.Die-hard fans will surely relish in the cameos that pop up during the movie s two-hour running time. We already knew Skinny Pete (Charles Baker) and Badger (Matthew Lee Jones) would make an appearance, but some of the other characters who make appearances will probably keep people talking. This type of fan service may not please every viewer who watches the sequel whether they choose to tune in to Netflix or head out to watch the movie on the big screen on opening weekend. But this is a Vince Gilligan joint, so obviously there s going to be more to El Camino than these juicy aesthetic tidbits. Here’s what critics are saying about El Camino: A Breaking Bad Film:(Photo by Netflix)IS AARON PAUL S PERFORMANCE WORTHY OF ANOTHER EMMY?Paul earned three Emmys for his supporting role on Breaking Bad, and in El Camino he delivers a mesmerizing lead performance that proves he deserves a spot on Hollywood’s A-list.  Judy Berman, TimePaul impressively juggles multiple eras of Pinkmania: “Yeah, bitch!”-ing meth student, wuvvy romantic, wrecking ball of soul-scabbed vengeance.  Darren Franich, Entertainment WeeklyAaron Paul is fantastic in his return to his most famous role.  Nick Harley, Den of GeekHe’s again great here, capturing the push-and-pull of trauma and need within Jesse.  Brian Tallerico, Roger EbertAnd as ever, Aaron Paul as Jesse Pinkman is one of the most tragic, moving, emotional performances on television.  Linda Holmes, NPR

the year adds to the poetry of it all. Brian Tallerico, RogerEbert.comThere is a beautiful score by Ludovico Einaudi that complements the sweeping vistas of the vast open spaces that Fern encounters on her journeys. Jo-Ann Titmarsh, HeyUGuysLudovico Einaudi’s solitary, piano laden score makes every composition of this character study ache as though it were ripping off highway to reveal the tread marks of abandonment. Robert Daniels, 812filmreviewsThe use of famed Italian composer Ludovico Einaudi s music is exemplary in guiding our access to Fern s inner life, starting with delicate piano melodies and steadily growing richer and more emotional as the movie progresses. David Rooney, Hollywood ReporterMy one major gripe with the aesthetics of the film is the use of the great composer Ludovico Einaudi’s music, which sometimes telegraphs emotions that don’t really sync up with where Fern’s psyche seems to be. Richard Lawson, Vanity FairRyan FujitaniAre there any major criticisms? The film falters whenever it slips into sentiment… the film does not quite deliver the emotional impact Zhao is likely striving to achieve. Gary M. Kramer, SalonZhao’s elegant, wise offering to us could, perhaps, use a little more grit and nastiness to roughen up its tranquility. Tomas Trussow, The Lonely Film CriticDoes the film have something to say about America? This may not be a story that could only ever happen in America, but it s a story that speaks to both the promise and the lie of a uniquely American mythos. Angie Han, MashableThe film’s genius is in deciding to shatter the paradigm of the American Dream completely to argue that the Dream doesn’t get to serve as a metric of a life well-lived. Matt Goldberg, ColliderThis is a story about the end of the American dream, but we needn’t interpret that as a negative thing. Norman Wilner, NOW TorontoNomadland is a snapshot of contemporary America where the American dream is in tatters, but hope for a better alternative nevertheless resides. Pat Mullen, POV MagazineNomadland is currently set to open in limited release on December 4, 2020.

As is befitting a secret agent, there aren’t many details about the film that are public knowledge yet, but here’s what we do know. [Updated March 4]It Finally Has a TitleFor a long time, Bond 25 was known simply as Bond 25. Fans were hoping that the official title might be revealed on April 25 of 2019, during a live-streamed presentation about the film broadcast from the Jamaican villa where Bond author Ian Fleming wrote all the original novels, but that was not the case. Instead, we all had to wait until late August before the official James Bond Twitter account announced that the new entry will be called No Time to Die.The First Trailer is OutThe first trailer for the film dropped on December 4, 2019, and it shows Bond leaping from aqueducts, getting trapped under ice, and withstanding a barrage of gunfire in his bullet-proof, classic Aston Martin DB5. He also faces possible betrayal from Dr. Madeleine Swann (Léa Seydoux) after settling down with her at the end of Spectre, a (friendly?) rivalry with a fellow 00 agent Nomi (Lashana Lynch), and a dangerous new villain — Rami Malek’s scarred, masked Safin.“History isn’t kind to men who play God,” Bond warns Safin in one of the trailer’s best lines, so it seems safe to assume that the latter s evil plan is quite ambitious and very dangerous. It Has an Official SynopsisThere were very few details about the plot before the trailer came out, and while it hints at a globe-trotting story of betrayal and friends and foes — both new and old — the synopsis explains a little bit more.“In No Time To Die, Bond has left active service and is enjoying a tranquil life in Jamaica. His peace is short-lived when his old friend Felix Leiter from the CIA turns up asking for help. The mission to rescue a kidnapped scientist turns out to be far more treacherous than expected, leading Bond onto the trail of a mysterious villain armed with dangerous new technology.”Cary Fukunaga is DirectingCary Fukunaga, known for True Detective Season 1, Beasts of No Nation, and Maniac, will direct No Time to Die. Fukunaga, who said that Daniel Craig is his favorite Bond, signed up to direct in September 2018 after original director Danny Boyle left the picture in August, citing “creative differences.” The switch in directors pushed back the film s release date, as it was initially set to come out in November of this year.“I want to make sure that this run of films, which has been fantastic, has a great next chapter and just keeps upping the ante,” Fukunaga said at the event. In addition, Neal Purvis, Robert Wade, Scott Z. Burns, and Fleabag’s Phoebe Waller-Bridge are writing the script.Daniel Craig is Returning(Photo by Francois Duhamel/Columbia Pictures)It was touch-and-go there for a while, though: Craig told Time Out London back in 2015 that he d rather break this glass and slash my wrists than play the suave spy one more time. But he s back for his fifth outing, havi

What it is: Based on the Coen brothers film of the same name, FX’s anthology miniseries explores new characters, new crimes, and new eras tangentially related to the film each season, deftly adapting the trademark Coen brothers mix of violence, dark humor, and compelling characters for the small screen. Season 4 shifts gears to 1950s Kansas City, Missouri, as two crime syndicates (one a group of Black Americans fleeing the Jim Crow south (led by Chris Rock as Loy Cannon), the other the city’s resident mafia) duke it out for power. Why you should watch it: What do Chris Rock, Jason Schwartzman, Ben Whishaw, Timothy Olyphant, Kirsten Dunst, Billy Bob Thornton, Ewan McGregor, Jesse Plemons, Carrie Coon, Jean Smart, Bob Odenkirk, Martin Freeman, Patrick Wilson, and (phew) Jim Gaffigan all have in common? They’ve all starred (or come season 4, will star) in the small-screen adaptation of Fargo, and that impressive cast alone makes it worth watching. FX and Noah Hawley’s Fargo, which debuted all the way back in 2014, is at least in part to blame for the rise and saturation of prestige miniseries and limited series, and for good reason. An ingenious blend of humor — both silly and gallows — and enrapturing crime mystery, the series succeeds in translating its Oscar-winning source material into Emmy-winning must-see TV. After a three-year break (and a delay due to the novel coronavirus pandemic), Fargo finally returns with its fourth season Sept. 27 on FX.Where to watch: Amazon, FandangoNow, Google Play, Hulu, Microsoft, VuduCommitment: About 27 hours (for the first three seasons)

Dark Phoenix is finally out in theaters and, well, it isn’t the greatest X-Men movie ever released. It’s currently Rotten at 23% on the Tomatometer  although audiences seemed to appreciate it more than the critics – and a strange epitaph to 20th Century Fox’s 20-year relationship with Marvel’s Merry Mutants. But considering the film is Fox s second attempt to adapt the landmark Dark Phoenix Saga, we can t help but wonder if the story is just too big to be contained in one film. As with X-Men: The Last Stand, it feels like vital pieces were lost and, while the casts of X-Men films are always sprawling, this one was missing a number of key characters. Does the story require a trilogy of its own? The Marvel Cinematic Universe proves audiences will wait a long time for payoffs, but building these ideas and characters in a way that resonates like the comic book series may be asking too much of the X-Men movies. Perhaps television is the best place to tell this story we previously got versions of it on two different X-Men animated series  and considering the way HBO and streaming services have pushed TV into feature quality, here are five reasons why Dark Phoenix is better suited for that format. It Can Build To Proper Payoffs And Endings(Photo by @ Twentieth Century Fox)Despite marketing the film as the end of the series, Dark Phoenix can t help but feel like connective tissue to another chapter. Of course, the same could be said for just about any X-Men project. It s baked into the concept, thanks to writer Chris Claremont, who made Uncanny X-Men the most important Marvel title in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Planning to stay on the book for a very long time, he seeded ideas he wouldn t pay off for years. One could call it soap opera plotting, as he provided enough hooks and payoffs to keep readers engaged while telling the ongoing tales of the X-Men as a whole. But in the case of the overall Phoenix Saga – a story comprising Jean Grey’s death, resurrection, and transformation into the Dark Phoenix – Claremont had an ending in mind. It was ultimately changed for reasons we will discuss later, but in its finished form, it offered a clear endpoint for a story told across nearly four years of comics.Tentpole filmmaking used to be comfortable with definitive endings. The first Matrix, for example, ends at a place that would have served as a satisfying conclusion had the film proven to be unsuccessful at the box office. And though we were promised a Star Wars Sequel Trilogy since 1980, Return of the Jedi is certainly an ending to the story begun in 1976. Nowadays, big movies more closely resemble the Claremont style than ever before, with endings teasing a subsequent hook for another story. In the case of Dark Phoenix, a prestige series would have the time to properly seed ideas like Xavier’s apparent mistake with Jean, the X-Men as celebrities a concept criminally underutilized in the film and one key idea not in the movie we’ll discuss in a moment. With room to breathe, these concepts would have greater weight and emotional resonance than a single two-hour film affords them. And as Claremont proved in the comics, the pace is essential. The Characters Can Be Characters(Photo by © Marvel / © Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation)Despite Jean Grey appearing in films since 2000, what do we know about her? She was Xavier’s star pupil, she has extraordinary telekinetic abilities (with telepathy added at some point), and she has the hots for Wolverine despite dating Cyclops. It s thin characterization when an entire movie rests on her shoulders. And while Sophie Turner does a lot with that rough sketch, it s no accident Dark Phoenix re-frames her story in the context of Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) apparently making a mistake. He is, after all, the character all the films have invested in since X-Men: First Class. That’s not a bad thing, as someone has to anchor these films besides Wolverine. But once you come back to the Dark Phoenix Saga, you need more of an emotional investment in Jean (and Cyclops, for that matter) than X-Men: Apocalypse and Dark Phoenix afforded her (or Scott).A prestige X-Men series focusing on the Dark Phoenix Saga can actually frame the story around Jean and who she is besides Xavier’s greatest student and Cyclops girlfriend. Her struggle with the Phoenix Force would mean something, as viewers would know what would be lost if she let the Phoenix have complete control. In the film, these ideas are there, but rushed or inferred for the most part. And since we’re talking characters, a series also means we get to know Cyclops – a character the films have always shortchanged because he’s not as romantic as Wolverine – Storm, and Nightcrawler beyond their powers. As a result, deaths would also carry more weight, because the characters would genuinely matter to viewers. The Hellfire Club Could Be UtilizedKevin Bacon and January Jones as Sebastian Shaw and Emma Frost in X-Men: First Class (2011) (Photo by Murray Close/20th Century Fox)One set of characters criminally absent from both cinematic versions of the Dark Phoenix story is the Hellfire Club. Created by Claremont and artist John Byrne – though apparently inspired by a 1966 episode of the British spy series The Avengers – they debuted as a social club whose inner circle was made of mutants attempting to control the course of world events. Characters like Sebastian Shaw and Emma Frost (played by Kevin Bacon and January Jones, respectively, in First Class) first appeared as members of the inner circle, who try to take control of a Phoenix-addled Jean Grey.Jean’s flirtation with domination and control is a key element of the story and something definitely missing from Dark Phoenix. Jessica Chastain’s Vuk tries to fill the role of the Hellfire Club, but the change lacks the power it should have because Vuk is more of a cipher than an actual character. Consider the satisfying biblical allusions when Jean is presented with classic, decadent temptations in the Hellfire Club. And while we’re at it, Emma Frost could offer Cyclops a temptation of his own, considering their eventual relationship during one of Jean’s many dormant periods in the comics.Incorporating the Hellfire Club also offers the story a true, seductive evil compared to the poorly realized, grubby D’Bari of Dark Phoenix. It would also give Jean, as a character, the moment to revel in her power that she never really gets in the film, and that key pivot in Jean and the Phoenix s time together is crucial to setting up the story s conclusion.Mutants In Space!(Photo by Twentieth Century Fox Film Corp. / ©Marvel / Everett Collection)Because Marvel Comics featured alien species from nearly the beginning of its superhero universe, the Phoenix Force’s origin as an alien entity needed very little scaffolding. And when she left Earth following her time with the Hellfire Club, her feasting on the D’Bari star also needed little set-up; the alien race was established years earlier in an issue of The Avengers. But because neither of the Fox film cycles set up aliens, the culmination of the Dark Phoenix storyline could not be used.In the comics, the Dark Phoenix returns to Earth after destroying the D Bari home world, and a council made up of the Kree, the Skrulls, and the Shi’ar Empire determine the Phoenix is too dangerous. The Shi’ar arrive on Earth and pronounce a death sentence on Jean, but Xavier convinces the Shi’ar Empress to allow the X-Men to duel her Imperial Guard in an attempt to save Jean, whom Xavier has de-powered back to her original abilities. When Jean and Cyclops prove to be the last X-Men standing, she uses a Kree device to disintegrate her body and, seemingly, disperse the Phoenix Force. It’s a big ending. But without the time to establish the Shi’ar, both Dark Phoenix and The Last Stand eschew that development in favor of smaller ideas. A television show, on the other hand, would have that time. In fact, the scenario becomes more intense if the X-Men are confronted with the reality of what Jean could do as the Phoenix and try to find an ethical outcome with the Shi’ar. It s a moral dilemma completely absent from Dark Phoenix, as the D’Bari survivors led by Vuk never seem too broken up about the billions of dead brethren they left behind on the smoldering wreck of their world.(Photo by Twentieth Century Fox Film Corp. / ©Marvel / Everett Collection)And, really, that moral dilemma is part of what makes the Dark Phoenix Saga so compelling. Its ending was changed when Marvel’s then Editor-in-Chief Jim Shooter learned Jean and the Phoenix would face no real punishment for the D’Bari genocide. The Phoenix Force – meant to be a recurring X-Men villain in the story’s aftermath – was shelved for a time, and Jean was barred from returning until a writer could give Shooter a satisfactory way to absolve her of the crime. It eventually happened, as no one stays dead in the comics, but the implications gave the story a lasting importance across decades of subsequent X-Men comic book storylines. This is the weight Dark Phoenix should have. But without the careful planning of a Marvel Cinematic Universe or the build-up of a television series, the impact will always be lost. At this point, we would favor a television show, as it could give these ideas the chance to grow and give us a live-action X-Men team we genuinely care about as they face their greatest ethical conflict. Until that happens, if it ever should, we still have the comics, which offer the story in its grandest scale.Dark Phoenix is in theaters now.Like this? 2.32.3 9月喜迎When it comes to TV, January 2019 is bringing an embarrassment of riches. With so many quality TV series returning to the small screen this month, we decided to recommend the best of the best in our January binge guide — below, find nine series returning in early 2019 that have one or more Certified Fresh seasons. Happy bingeing in the new year! You're the Worst 95% (FXX)What it is: This dark comedy from creator Stephen Falk is the love story of Jimmy (a pitch-perfect Chris Geere) and Gretchen (the magnetic Aya Cash), two world-weary, self-destructive cynics who want anything but to fall in love — until they do.Why you should watch it: The type of distinctly unheroic antics our lovebird heroes get into in You’re the Worst is enough to make Walter White blush. No joke — this FXX comedy is about as real as it gets. Its fifth and final season premieres January 9.Where to watch: Amazon, FandangoNOW, Google Play, Hulu, Microsoft, VuduCommitment: Approx. 19 hours (for the first four seasons)Brooklyn Nine-Nine 95% (NBC)What it is: This hit comedy series from creators Dan Goor and Michael Schur is a workplace sitcom featuring some very distinct personalities — the aloof and gregarious Det. Jake Peralta (Saturday Night Live’s Andy Samberg), his fictional precinct’s dry commanding officer, Captain Ray Holt (Andre Braugher), and the rest of the motley crew of the Nine-Nine.Why you should watch it: We’ve seen fan-initiated primetime resuscitations before, but rarely do they happen as swiftly and unanimously as Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s after its unceremonious cancellation at Fox. The online outcry had barely begun before Universal Television began shopping the sitcom around, and it was scooped up by NBC just a day later — with good reason. The series is much more than the Andy Samberg show; it’s a tried-and-true ensemble piece with beloved supporting characters and as much humor as heart. Season 6 premieres January 10.Where to watch: Amazon, FandangoNOW, Google Play, Hulu, Microsoft, VuduCommitment: Approx. 41 hours (for the first five seasons)Future Man 91% (Hulu)What it is: A hapless janitor named Josh Futturman (Josh Hutcherson) has one joy in life: video games. And surprisingly, it’s that passion that eventually gets him recruited into saving the world from certain doom. After beating Biotic Wars, a game so difficult that most gamers have given up on it, he learns it was all a test from the future, and is greeted by two mysterious visitors who hang the safety of mankind in his capable gamer hands. Why you should watch it: Considering the creative pedigree behind this series (it’s created by Howard Overman, Kyle Hunter, and Ariel Shaffir and executive produced and directed by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg), it should come as little surprise that Future Man is quite funny. But it’s also a high-octane, rollicking adventure and fitting homage to sci-fi genre classics (in case you’re into that sort of thing, too). Season 2 premieres January 11.Where to watch: Amazon, FandangoNOW, Google Play, Hulu, Microsoft, VuduCommitment: Approx. 6.5 hours (for the first season)True Detective 78% (HBO)What it is: Like the very best mystery series, much of True Detective’s third installment is being kept under wraps, but what we do know sounds pretty compelling: Over the course of three decades in the Arkansas Ozarks,  a pair of detectives work to uncover the truth behind a grisly crime involving two missing children. Why you should watch it: This gritty anthological crime series from creator Nic Pizzolatto was a hit out the gate with season 1, which featured a pair of surprising and career-best performances from Woody Harrelson and Mathew McConaughey. Season 2 was largely seen as a creative misstep, but with Moonlight Oscar winner Mahershala Ali leading season 3 (and a team that professes to have learned from its mistakes), we highly recommend tuning in for its January 13 return.Where to watch: Amazon, FandangoNOW, Google Play, HBO Now, Microsoft, VuduCommitment: Approx. 17 hours (for the first two seasons)Star Trek: Discovery 84% (CBS All Access)What it is: Star Trek: Discovery is set 10 years prior to the original series and in the same universe as Kirk, Spock, and the Enterprise, and sees the titular ship venturing out to discover new worlds and quell violent alien forces. As always, it’s the cast of characters on board that is the series’ beating heart. Why you should watch it: Creators Bryan Fuller and Alex Kurtzman (not to mention star Sonequa Martin-Green, among others) had big shoes and a devout fandom’s expectations to fill when it premiered in September 2017. Our verdict: a job well done. Season 2 premieres January 17 and features Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount), the U.S.S. Enterprise, and (another) young Spock (Ethan Peck). Catch up before it starts airing. Where to watch: Amazon, CBS All Accesss, FandangoNOW, Google Play, VuduCommitment: Approx. 12 hours (for the first season)High Maintenance 98% (HBO)What it is: From husband-and-wife co-creators Katja Blichfeld and Ben Sinclair, High Maintenance began as a hit web series starring Sinclair as a traveling weed deliveryman living in New York City. HBO picked it up to series in 2016 and largely retained the comedy s original format, just made its episodes longer. Why you should watch it: While there are plenty of primetime programs that paint a great snippet of present-day NYC, few get the full picture the way High Maintenance does. That’s because each episode features various characters who — whether they’re hosting a swingers party, rebelling against their ultra-religious parents, or sitting home alone collecting cans of La Croix — are from such disparate walks of life that they end up inadvertently highlighting the similarities between all dwellers of the concrete jungle. (And we promise those similarities go beyond enjoying the green.) Season 3 begins January 20.Where to watch: Amazon, FandangoNOW, Google Play, HBO Now, Microsoft, VuduCommitment: Approx. 8 hours (for the first two seasons)SMILF 91% (Showtime)What it is: SMILF is a lot of things, perhaps most of all unexpected. But for the elevator pitch: a single mother named Bridgette Bird lives in South Boston and struggles to find a balance between the toddler son that relies on her and the expectations of work to make ends meet. Why you should watch it: As SMILF’s creator, director, writer, star, and real-life single mom, Frankie Shaw is a force of nature. Pulling semi-autobiographically from her own experience as a working mother, the series is smart, unflinching, and funny. Better yet, the twice Golden Globe–nominated series’ runtime and episode count make it very easily bingeable. Season 2 premieres January  20.Where to watch: Amazon, FandangoNow, Google Play, Microsoft, VuduCommitment: Approx. 4 hours (for the first season)The Magicians 91% (Syfy)What it is: Based on the acclaimed fantasy series by Lev Grossman and from producers Michael London, Janice Williams, John McNamara, and Sera Gamble, The Magicians follows Quentin Coldwater (Jason Ralph) after he enrolls in Brakebills University for Magical Pedagogy in New York. What follows for the young magician is a collision between our world and a threatening fantasy world with nothing less at stake than reality as we know it.Why you should watch it: The Magicians has all the straight-up drama that comes with magic, secret academies, and battles between good and evil — and it s a whole lot of crazy fun, too. Season 4 premieres January 23.Where to watch: Amazon, FandangoNow, Google Play, Microsoft, Netflix, VuduCommitment: Approx. 30 hours (for the first three seasons)Broad City 99% (Comedy Central)What it is: Creators Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer capture all the tomfoolery of your 20s in their  full glory while writing a sometimes-messy love letter to the Big Apple. Why you should watch it: Sadly, all good things must come to an end, and Broad City was a pretty great thing. Irreverent but relatable, honest but larger than life, this hit comedy series about two twentysomething Brooklynites just trying to keep it together tapped into the cultural zeitgeist with gutsy and goofy hot takes on matters of the moment. Its fifth and final season premieres January 24.Where to watch: Amazon, FandangoNow, Google Play, Hulu, Microsoft, VuduCommitment: Approx. 14 hours (for the first four seasons)

One of the first scenes in P-Valley shows a scantily clad woman on a pole — but she’s not gyrating or enticing some horny onlookers in the audience. No, this woman – Mercedes, star Brandee Evans’ queen bee of The Pynk strip club – is backstage mocking one of the patrons she so easily cons into parting with his hard-earned cash. After performing show-stopping routines all night, she is also sore and tired.Starz series P-Valley centers on exotic dancers in the swampy Mississippi Delta, and — make no mistake — nudity and sex scenes definitely occur. But the show is less about tantalizing and twerking and more about the talented (and often voiceless) women who work hard to make it look like they can fulfill sexual fantasies while barely breaking a sweat. And it s getting rave reviews for its efforts. P-Valley blends the profane, the sacred, and the politics of the almighty dollar to tell engrossing stories about Black women on the margins who use their bodies to keep families and communities afloat. It s also one of the year s best new shows, TV Guide s Malcolm Venable wrote about the first season, which is currently Fresh on the Tomatometer at 100% with 10 reviews.Series creator Katori Hall told Rotten Tomatoes that one of the intentions of her show was to explore the female gaze.“We have inherited this huge box of hyper-sexualized images of women,” said Hall, who made a point of only hiring female directors for the eight-episode first season. But on P-Valley, Hall said, “we were just adamant that all sexuality was going to be in service to plot, and it was always going to be a reflection of characters in the world.”(Photo by Starz)Hall adapted the drama from her play, P y Valley, which uses the missing letters of that title. The show’s opening credits also show the full title, but Hall said that they are officially using this “little, clean nickname” because that will make it easier for things like billboards and TV listings. Hall developed the play s story by conducting research and interviews in visits to more than 40 strip clubs over a span of six years. She met the female performers and was able to “really get behind the scenes with them — not only at the club, but [be] really interested in their lives. I ve met their husbands, their sons, their daughters, and really got to know them on an intimate level.”“When people think of the strip club, they don t think of a theatrical experience,” Hall added. “They don t think of strength. They just think of exploitation, and we wanted to show there s flight in this space, and there s also falling in this space. And there is a dance between exploitation and liberation.”The opening credits song, which Hall wrote with Memphis rapper Jucee Froot — and which Froot performs — includes taunting lines like “we make falling on the sky look easy,” but also “green on the floor/money talk/can you hear me?”The show features a predominately Black cast, which is authentic to what Hall experienced in these clubs during her research, but may look different to viewers in other parts of the world.Series star Evans explained: “On P-Valley, we’re showing you the Southern style; we’re showing you the Black experience in the South. So you’re going to hear people say ‘that’s not how we are’ and that’s OK. But that’s how this is. In the South. In the Black club. This is what’s truly going on, and I hope that you look beyond the ladies on the pole and on the stage and go, What’s in their heart?’”(Photo by © Starz)Beyond the dancing, a mysterious new girl, Autumn Night (Elarica Johnson) joins The Pynk s ranks, and another plot involves talk of a shady corporate takeover. An LGBTQIA love story centers on Nicco Annan’s Uncle Clifford, the Pynk’s madam who identifies as gender fluid, uses “she/her” pronouns, and knows how to rock some eyeliner and heels. This character could easily have become a stereotype with one false step, but Hall said she and the other writers made a point of grounding her by showing how she reacts in various environments — be it as a mom, a pimp, a savvy business person, or simply a comforting friend.“It’s this very kaleidoscopic lens that we re viewing this character from,” she said. “That’s why Uncle Clifford feels like this fully fleshed-out human being instead of this walking stereotype with the hair and nails. We actually see when the hair and nails come off.”Uncle Clifford is just one of many ways the show is fighting preconceived prejudices – and not just from potential audiences. Although star Evans taught a dance class called Hip Hop in Heels, which was meant to help inspire confidence in its women attendees, she told Rotten Tomatoes that exotic dancing was a whole other matter, and she had to learn to twerk for the part. She eventually did almost all of her own stunts and dances in the show.(Photo by Starz)Evans is also a preacher’s daughter from Memphis. She remembers tentatively telling the wife of her current pastor about the part, worried she’d be shunned by her community. Instead, the other woman excitedly asked for the show’s time and channel.Evans’ Mercedes, however, does not have such a positive experience with the church. P-Valley discusses the character’s relationship with her mother, Patrice (Harriett D. Foy), who has found Jesus in her later years. Patrice dreams of her turn at the pulpit, just as Mercedes dreams of leaving the pole behind to open a gym where she can build out her other business as a cheerleading coach. Although the two women do not see eye-to-eye, P-Valley argues that they have a similar ability to hustle.“The church is held up because it is this patriarchal system, and the fact that you have this woman who really wants to have her own business and be on her pulpit,” Hall explained. “Juxtapose that with Mercedes. She wants to be with her own studio; on her own stage. They’re actually striving for the same thing, just in two completely different worlds.”Hall added that though many women have to struggle to break into most arenas, “this show really demonstrates that you can be a woman of high moral regard in one space, but you re still gonna struggle as much, if not more than, the woman that you look down upon.”

This week s Ketchup brings you more headlines from the world of film development news, covering such titles as Dungeons Dragons, Hello Kitty, and Searching 2.This WEEK S TOP STORYALEJANDRO GONZÁLEZ IÑÁRRITU HAS BEGUN FILMING HIS NEXT PROJECT(Photo by ©Roadside Attractions courtesy Everett Collection)Getting a feature film produced is difficult enough, even without the spectre of the COVID-19 pandemic looming over society for the past year or so. Just over five years ago at the 88th Academy Awards, Alejandro González Iñárritu won the Oscar for Best Director for The Revenant (Certified Fresh at 78%), which also won Best Cinematography and Best Actor for Leonardo DiCaprio, and this week, Iñárritu was finally able to start filming his first feature film in the five-plus years since. The project, called Limbo, is now filming on location in Mexico City. Iñárritu also wrote the film, which doesn t yet have an official synopsis, except that it explores the political and social modernity of Mexico. Iñárritu s choice to film in Mexico City following his Hollywood success with The Revenant could also be compared to Alfonso Cuaron s Roma (Certified Fresh at 95%), which was filmed in Mexico City following his own Hollywood success with Gravity (Certified Fresh at 95%). No casting announcements have been made yet for Limbo.Other Top Headlines1. J.J. ABRAMS HIRES FIRST FEMALE STAR TREK FEATURE SCREENWRITER(Photo by Paramount Pictures)It was just last week that producer J.J. Abrams and his Bad Robot production company hired award-winning writer Ta-Nehisi Coates to work on the new Superman reboot (featuring an actor of color as the lead, for a historic first). This week, Abrams moved forward with another first as Bad Robot has hired screenwriter Kalinda Vasquez to work on the next Star Trek feature film. This project should not be confused with the Star Trek that Quentin Tarantino was announced as partnering with Abrams and Bad Robot in 2017 (as that one appears to have cooled down in the years since). If Vasquez s work on this project makes it to production, she will become the first woman ever to write a Star Trek feature film. In addition to serving as executive producer on shows like Runaways, Star Trek: Discovery, Once Upon a Time, and Fear the Walking Dead, Kalinda Vasquez has also written episodes of all of those shows, plus four episodes of Prison Break and seven episodes of Nikita. It is not yet known if her Star Trek project will introduce a new cast or use one of the previous casts (like say, the Kelvin crew of Chris Pine, Simon Pegg, Zoe Saldana, etc.) Paramount Pictures does not currently have any Star Trek feature films on the studio s release schedule.2. ANNETTE BENING TO PORTRAY RECORD-BREAKING SWIMMER DIANA NYAD (Photo by Suzanne Tenner/©Focus Features)Diana Nyad is a record-breaking long distance swimmer whose accomplishments include swimming from Cuba to Florida without a shark cage, swimming from Jamaica to Florida, and swimming around the island of Manhattan in under 8 hours. Nyad s amazing life is now set to be adapted as the biopic Nyad, with four-time Academy Award nominee Annette Bening attached to star. Nyad will mark the narrative feature film directorial debut of the team of Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin, who won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature for their 2018 documentary Free Solo (Certified Fresh at 98%), which depicted a similar form of endurance sport (free solo mountain climbing). Nyad is being adapted from her autobiography Find a Way, with filming expected to start sometime this summer.3. RUSSELL CROWE TO STAR AS ABSTRACT ARTIST MARK ROTHKO (Photo by © Universal Pictures)There have obviously been dozens of biopics about famous painters, but so far, we have relatively few to date about abstract painters (Pollock, Certified Fresh at 80% starring Ed Harris, is a notable exception). That field will soon expand as the life of artist Mark Rothko is about to be portrayed by Russell Crowe in Rothko. Mark Rothko is best known for his color field paintings of large fields of bright colors in squares or rectangles. Rothko will be directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson (Fifty Shades of Grey, Nowhere Boy). The Rothko cast will include Irish actress Aisling Fraciosi (as Rothko s daughter), Jared Harris, Michael Stuhlbarg, and the director s husband Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Pietro from Marvel s Avengers: Age of Ultron). Adapted from the book The Legacy of Rothko by Lee Seldes, Rothko will focus on the protracted legal dispute between Kate Rothko and the painter’s estate executors and the directors of his gallery, Marlborough Fine Art, which you can read more about here.4. MELISSA MCCARTHY TO PORTRAY MAJOR MARVEL VILLAIN IN THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER SORT OF (Photo by Hopper Stone/©Columbia Pictures)Some of the funniest surprises in Taika Waititi s Thor: Ragnarok (Certified Fresh at 93%) came early in the film when we first saw some Asgardian actors depicting the events of earlier Thor movies, including Matt Damon as Loki, Sam Neill as Odin, and Chris Hemsworth s brother Luke Hemsworth as Thor. There has been a fair amount of new coverage of actors like Matt Damon returning to Australia for filming of the fourth movie, Thor: Love and Thunder (5/6/2022), but this week, we actually heard about someone new. Several photos have emerged online this week of comedic actress Melissa McCarthy in costume on the sets in Australia as the villainous character Hela, as portrayed by Cate Blanchett in Thor: Ragnarok, with the other actors-playing-actors like Matt Damon also on set with McCarthy. In similar news, we also learned this week that the upcoming sports comedy sequel Space Jam: A New Legacy (7/6/2021) will also feature cameo appearances by some of Warner Bros other film properties, including Batman, Mad Max, and Casablanca.5. THIS WEEK IN MUSICAL BIOPICS: BOB MARLEY, AND ROBBIE WILLIAMS (AS A MONKEY?)  (Photo by Everett Collection)Although both films are now a few years old, the box office successes of Bohemian Rhapsody and Rocketman (Certified Fresh at 89%) continue to have a ripple effect on other musical biopics getting produced. That includes musical biopic projects which have languished in development for years, or in some cases, decades. The life story of famed reggae musician Bob Marley is one such example. Paramount Pictures is finally getting closer to production with the news this week that the studio has hired director Reinaldo Marcus Green, who comes to the Bob Marley biopic even as he continues work on another biographical film, King Richard, about the father (played by Will Smith) of future tennis stars Venus and Serena Williams. In a sad coincidence, the movement on the Bob Marley biopic comes in the same week that saw the passing of Marley s musical partner Bunny Wailer at the age of 73. British pop star Robbie Williams is also getting a biopic called Better Man to be directed by Michael Gracey (The Greatest Showman). In a bizarre revelation, this week, Deadline reported that the role of Robbie Williams will be portrayed by a CGI monkey, apparently, quite seriously.6. DUNGEONS DRAGONS MOVIE CASTS DETECT EVIL SPELL ON HUGH GRANT (Photo by Jay Maidment/©Warner Bros. Pictures)Actor Jeremy Irons has had a film career with many great heights, but one of his lowest lows may have come in 2000, when he starred as the evil villain in the first Dungeons Dragons feature film (Rotten at 10%). One has to speculate that Hugh Grant is hoping for a better result with his decision this week to take the role of the main villain (called Forge Fletcher) in the new Dungeons Dragons movie (5/27/2022). Sophia Lillis, who has recently starred as both Nancy Drew and Beverly in the IT movies, has also take a role as a character named Doric (neither of these names seem to point towards popular characters from existing D D stories). This new Dungeons Dragons reboot is being written and directed by the team of Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley, who also collaborated on Game Night (Certified Fresh at 85%). It is not yet known if the Dungeons Dragons movie will be set entirely in a fantasy world, or if some part of it might also depict real world players. Hugh Grant and Sophia Lillis are joining a cast which already includes Regé-Jean Page (Bridgerton), Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, and Justice Smith.7. WRINKLE IN TIME STAR STORM REID MAY GET LOST IN SEARCHING 2 (Photo by Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection)Although it wasn t a box office blockbuster, the independent social media mystery drama Searching (Certified Fresh at 92%) was still a surprise hit relative to its budget. Jon Cho and Michelle La starred as father and daughter in the first Searching, but apparently for the upcoming sequel, a new cast is being sought as the formula will be applied to a new family and setting. We don t know specifically how different or similar the sequel s premise will be, so we have relatively little to guess on, but we can report that 17 year old actress Storm Reid is now in talks for a lead role in Searching 2. Reid made her feature film debut in 12 Years a Slave, had the lead role in A Wrinkle in Time, and is also one of Zendaya s co-stars in HBO s Euphoria.8. HELLO KITTY FINALLY GETTING HER BIG SHOT AT THE MEOW-VIES (Photo by Saban International courtesy Everett Collection)The Japanese design company Sanrio has had over 45 years of success with their popular Hello Kitty character, including in the United States, but for the most part, attempts to carry Hello Kitty over in formats like TV or the movies have not taken off outside of Japan. Back in October of 2019, we reported that New Line Cinema had acquired the film rights to Hello Kitty, but we hadn t heard much since then. This week, we finally got confirmation that the studio is actively developing a Hello Kitty feature film that will combine live action and animation (like this week s Tom and Jerry). New Line Cinema has hired two directors for their Hello Kitty movie: Jennifer Coyle and Leo Matsuda. Coyle s credits as director include 23 episodes of DC Super Hero Girls and 13 episodes of Bob s Burgers, while Matsuda s credits are mostly as an animator or story artist on projects like The Simpsons Movie, Wreck-It Ralph, and Zootopia.9. JONATHAN MAJORS TO STAR IN MILITARY DRAMA 892(Photo by The Washington Post/Getty Images)One of the shows that premiered right in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic when many people were hungry for something to binge was HBO s spooky Lovecraft Country, starring Jonathan Majors. In the months since, Majors was able to translate that show s success to a new gig at Marvel Studios as one of the company s most prolific super villains, Kang the Conqueror, in the sequel Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (TBA 2022). This week, Majors signed on for another project, which will be a drama called 892 about a marine war veteran who suffers from PTSD. In somewhat related news, following recent allegations, rapper-turned-actor T.I. will not be returning for Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania after co-starring in the first two Ant-Man movies. It is unclear if this was always the plan, or if Marvel Studios is making the change based on the allegations against T.I. and his wife Tameka Tiny Harris. Likewise, we also don t know if the other Ant-Man supporting characters played by Michael Peña and David Dastmalchian will be returning or not.On an Apple device? Ghcxuf (Photo by United Artists/courtesy Everett Collection)All Child s Play and Chucky Movies, Ranked By Tomatometer Hi, I m Chucky! Wanna play? Audiences were game to tango with the possessed, murder-bent action doll in 1988 s Child s Play, and so the slasher golden age got in one last big stab before the decade closed. Even critics, who had largely turned their nose up at the genre, were relatively on board, praising Child s Play s novel villain, creepy puppetry work, and the compact, efficient plotting and kills.Brad Dourif returned as Chucky for two direct sequels (and all subsequent films until the 2019 reboot) to menace Andy, kid hero of the original, into his teenage years, as writer/creator Don Mancini deepened the Chucky mythos in unexpected, bizzare fashion. This allowed the franchise to pivot into meta black comedy territory with Bride of Chucky and Seed of Chucky, whose highlights include Jennifer Tilly (as herself) giving birth to the Chuckster s twins.Mancini, who was also occupying the director s seat by this point, revived the series nine years later with 2013 s Curse of Chucky, reverting back to straight slasher horror. Critics approved of the new earnest approach, compelling characters, and its narrative ties back to the original film. 2017 s Cult of Chucky continued to defy the laws of diminishing horror sequel returns with its most outsized story yet, generating the best reviews of the 20-year-old franchise.Meanwhile, Mark Hamill was tapped to voice the doll-face killer in 2019 s Child s Play, which dug up a new chilling storyline attuned to today s technological world. Whichever timeline you re here for (and who says Chucky and Buddi can t meet up at one point?), we re ranking all Child s Play and Chucky movies by Tomatometer! 😈😈

欧宝官方app (Photo by Neon / Courtesy Everett Collection. Thumbnail image: Universal, RADiUS-TWC/Courtesy Everett Collection.)All Elisabeth Moss Movies RankedWith a full steam TV career ranging from The West Wing to Mad Men and The Handmaid s Tale, it took until last decade for Elisabeth Moss to start building her profile as a leading movie star. But in the years since 2014 breakthrough dramatic thriller The One I Love, she s put together an impressive catalog of diverse, complex film roles that complements her television work, as seen in Certified Fresh movies like Queen of Earth, Listen Up Phillip, Us, and Her Smell. In 2020, she made headlines on both sides of the pandemic: first with The Invisible Man (one of the last major theatrical offerings to enjoy some semblance of a full release window), and then with the dark, literary Shirley after it set up shop on streaming. She ll have an appearance in Wes Anderson s The French Dispatch, which was due for later this year and has now been unset without a new release date. Until then, we re ranking all Elisabeth Moss movies by Tomatometer!

(Photo by Columbia Pictures)Disney remained in full dominance at the box office this weekend, though Quentin Tarantino had the biggest opening of his career and a shot at his fourth 0 million grosser.King of the Crop(Photo by © Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)No surprise that Disney’s The Lion King was able to hold on to the No. 1 slot this week. Even with a 60 percent drop, the animated film was still able to haul in million. That is the ninth-best second weekend of all time, and with 3 million in the bank it is good enough for eighth place after ten days of release. Incredibles 2 last year had 9.7 million and the live-action Beauty and the Beast was at 9 million in 2017. They now move down to ninth and tenth all-time. All signs right now suggest Jon Favreau’s redo is headed north of 0 million domestic. It is over 2 million worldwide to date and already 47th on the all-time chart.Once Upon a Time…Generally, films about Hollywood and the industry do not draw the same reactions from the public as they do from critics and people in the know. Comedies such as Tropic Thunder, Get Shorty, and Bowfinger have done well enough, but more inside baseball stuff about the business, like Ed Wood and Hail, Caesar!, have not exactly attracted major interest. But throw in two of the most recognizable names in front of the camera and a third behind it and all of a sudden you have Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, which earned the biggest opening of Quentin Tarantino’s career with .35 million. Better even than his last go-round with Brad Pitt in August 2009 when Inglourious Basterds opened to .05 million. However, it may be the other star that is the true secret sauce.Leonardo DiCaprio is as safe a bet these days in casting original projects. Directors like Martin Scorsese and Christopher Nolan help, but the Oscar winner also elevated Baz Luhrmann and Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu to the biggest successes of their careers as well. DiCaprio’s last four films (including his supporting turn in Django Unchained) have grossed 6 million or higher. Go back a full decade to 2010 and you can make the streak six out of seven (with Clint Eastwood’s J. Edgar being the sole outlier with just .3 million total). Inception (.7 million), The Great Gatsby ( million), and Shutter Island ( million) all opened higher, but that just means that Once Upon a Time is the fourth-best opener of DiCaprio’s career, just as it is Pitt’s. World War Z (.4 million), Mr. Mrs. Smith (.3 million), and Troy (.8 million) all opened higher. Pitt has had ten 0 million grossers as either a lead or co-lead. If you count Django, then DiCaprio has had ten as well. An opening like this certainly gives both actors a chance to take those numbers to 11.The Top Ten And Beyond(Photo by Sony Pictures)Spider-Man: Far From Home crossed the billion-dollar line worldwide this week; it is the first Spidey film to do so. With 4 million after 27 days, the film overall is still right in line with 0 million grosser The Hunger Games and still a bit ahead of 2002’s Spider-Man. However, its fourth weekend of .2 million is well behind the respective million and .5 million fourth weekends of those films, so it is fading a bit faster. Transformers: Dark of the Moon posted a million fourth weekend as well, and finished with 2 million. Far From Home is still about million ahead of that film’s place and is likely headed somewhere in the vicinity of Spider-Man 2’s 3 million. Worldwide it is currently the 32nd-best earner of all time and seems on track to pass Skyfall’s .108 billion and become Sony’s highest-grossing film ever.Toy Story 4 is going to cross 0 million domestic next weekend, and after 38 days is the 18th-highest grosser ever. Its .8 million sixth weekend is better than 11 of the top 20 films on that list, and looks ready to finish north of 5 million. That will help get the film over a billion as it currently stands as the 56th-highest-grossing film ever worldwide. Ahead of it at the moment, globally, is Disney’s live-action Aladdin, which, with .009 billion in the bank, is the 39th-highest-grosser ever. Finally, in limited release news, Lulu Wang’s The Farewell — still brandishing a perfect 100% on the Tomatometer — made it into the Top Ten this weekend. It is the first film not in wide release to hit the top ten since the weekend of Mar. 22-24 when No Manches Frida 2 grossed .77 million in 472 theaters. The Farewell is only in 135 theaters nationwide and grossed .55 million this weekend. How does that stack up to similar releases? That is better than A24’s Eighth Grade did last summer when it expanded to 158 theaters in weekend three and grossed .26 million. When Revolutionary Road jumped to the same number of theaters in its third weekend, it grossed .42 million that week and went on to gross .91 million total. Among a sample of some of the more successful indie releases between 125-150 theaters at this point, The Farewell is not quite up to the heights of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon or Midnight In Paris, but with .6 million after 17 days it is ahead of all the rest of them, including such notable titles as There Will Be Blood, Boogie Nights, and Thank You For Smoking. Next weekend’s nationwide expansion will paint a larger picture. This Time Last Year(Photo by © Paramount)It was Tom Cruise and Mission: Impossible – Fallout handily leading the way with a .23 million opening. That was more than the next five films in the top ten combined, including the disappointing bow for Teen Titans Go! To The Movies, which only began with .41 million. Both films were very well-liked with critics, scoring 97% and 91%, respectively. Last year’s entire Top Ten averaged 71% on the Tomatometer and the Top Ten grossed 3.33 million; just the 42nd-best among July weekends since 1990. This year’s Top Ten averaged 73.7% on the Tomatometer and grossed a total of 2.52 million, only the 34th best.On the Vine: Hobbs Shaw Hopes For Spinoff SuccessFor the third week in a row Hollywood is delivering just a single new wide release into theaters and it could be another big one. Fast Furious Presents: Hobbs Shaw hopes to explode next week after the previous three films in the franchise opened to million or higher. Will Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham’s partnership draw the loyal fanbase to similar numbers? Also next week, A24 expands Lulu Wang’s The Farewell nationwide. And look for other well-received Sundance fare in limited release, including Luce (95%) with Naomi Watts, Octavia Spencer, and Kelvin Harrison Jr., as well as Jennifer Kent’s follow-up to
