It s been 22 years since the series finale of Animaniacs hit the air. Much has changed in the world of cartoon entertainment. But nostalgia never goes out of style. Hulu execs understood this when they announced the highly-anticipated reboot, now considered a Hulu Original, back in 2018. As an added bonus, all 99 episodes of the original series, which premiered back in 1993, were added to Hulu s streaming library. The original Animaniacs had an anthology format, but the program was generally centered on three zany characters: The Warner brothers Yakko (Rob Paulsen), Wakko (Jess Harnell), and the Warner sister, Dot (Tress MacNeille). In each episode, these three troublemakers would escape their water tower prison on the Warner Bros. lot and wreak havoc as they went, interacting with celebrities and iconic characters from the big screen while delivering hilarious riffs on pop culture and some catchy songs along the way. And of course, there was Pinky (Paulsen) and The Brain (Maurice LaMarche) — the mouse duo hell-bent on world domination were so popular, they even got their own spinoff. And now, Hulu has gotten the band back together. Most of the original voice cast has returned, along with Steven Spielberg, who is once again the executive producer on the series. All 13 episodes are now streaming. But is the return of the animated classic as satisfying as fans are hoping? Here s what critics say about the now–Certified Fresh first season of Hulu s Animaniacs. How Does the Animation Compare to the Original?(Photo by Amblin Television/Warner Bros. Animation)One thing that’s clear from the start is that the production paid close attention to how the animation of the original worked when it was at its best. Yakko, Wakko, and Dot have been updated to 2020 without losing any of the zany stretching and wacky expressions that made them endearing in the first place. It’s by no means the same show (and the updated Acme Labs building and Pinky and the Brain intro should make that immediately apparent), but it pays all due respect to its delightfully disrespectful past. — Rollin Bishop, ComicBook.comIt has an updated digital, vectored look. Much like the original series, seven different animation studios across the globe worked on this, but it manages to stay consistent. For starters, all the character designs have thinner outlines. There’s no shadowing and it leans more towards flat designs. The backgrounds, updated to resemble something like a watercolor painting, and the art direction are gorgeous. — Rendy Jones, Rendy ReviewsIt copies the animation style of the original, though the now-digital format gives the human characters an uncanny valley feel. The clean lines and brighter tones clash with the show’s purposefully ugly moments—like watching a toddler scream or the new Warner Bros. CEO laugh maniacally at the idea she’d ever eat refined sugar. (It reminded me a bit of Tom and Jerry: Willy Wonky and the Chocolate Factory, which is something I never want to say again.) — Beth Elderkin, io9.comWhat Other Characters Show Up?(Photo by Amblin Television/Warner Bros. Animation)It’s also worth noting that while several segments from the previous version didn’t make the jump — so long Slappy Squirrel and Rita and Runt — there do appear to be entirely new segments in the mix this time around.— Rollin Bishop, ComicBook.comWe don’t have all the secondary characters back — yet. I am really hoping to see the Goodfeathers and Buttons and… well… everyone! We did get Pinky and the Brain though and that is something I cannot complain about. It was so great to see them still trying to take over the world 22 years later. — Tessa Smith, Mama s GeekyOnly one of the new episodes included a brand-new short in a similar vein, called Starbox and Cindy, that featured an alien trying to escape a little girl’s house. It had the most interesting animation choices by far and I loved how it featured an actual child’s voice, but it wasn’t an instant classic. It did leave me hoping to see more original shorts, though, as the episodes felt kind of repetitive without them. — Beth Elderkin, io9.comYou can’t have “Animaniacs” without “Pinky and the Brain,” and the series returns the saga of the two mice seeking world domination despite their Of Mice and Men dynamic. Even more than the Warner siblings sketches, these segments certainly feel like unabashed continuations of the same series. And even with some peppering of jokes about memes, or references to the movie “Ex Machina,” it’s easy for the show to feel like it’s on autopilot. It s the same thing they do every night, but it s still a segment that pales compared to Dot, Wakko, and Yakko s antics. — Nick Allen, RogerEbert.comDo the Jokes Still Land?(Photo by Amblin Television/Warner Bros. Animation)The same kind of humour found within the 90s series can be found in the new Animaniacs. It was both brilliant and nostalgic. — Britany Murphy, Geeks of ColorThe series is as topical as things can get for writing the new episodes in 2018. Only five episodes were available for review and I quickly devoured all of them just before Election Day. There’s no shortage of material when it comes to jokes about Russia. The series even has an election special that is on the money–it’s a basic bit that satires what we see on cable news.— Danielle Solzman, Solzy at the MoviesThe series fails in part because it didn’t update its nostalgia to make sense for fans who were kids then but are adults now. Instead, it’s stuck in the ’90s. This presents itself in dated references to things like Seinfeld’s “The dingo ate your baby” and a Cold War-esque view of Russia. During times Animaniacs skews more modern, the satire is not “biting,”—as Dot herself claims in an early episode—it’s weak. — Beth Elderkin, io9.comInstead of going to the rich well of entertainment industry nonsense and historical larks that kept Ruegger’s “Animaniacs” afloat, Wild’s “Animaniacs,” relishes the opportunity to take shots at Politics Today in a way that has kept “Family Guy” running for years, but rarely fits the Animaniacs themselves. Yakko, Wakko and Dot are shrewd, sure, but they’ve always rather been agents of chaos accidentally on purpose upending the world than just snarky pundits commenting on its flaws. — Caroline Framke, VarietyAny Final Thoughts?(Photo by Amblin Television/Warner Bros. Animation)Some bits are far better than others, but thanks to the brief runtime for any given segment, nothing ever truly overstays its welcome. If the gang being extremely gross, then extremely cute, then extremely gross again doesn’t sit right with you, all you need to do is wait another eight minutes for something else to come along. — Rollin Bishop, ComicBook.comThe show’s spirit is still completely intact. It hits all the beats that captured what the original was all about: the self-aware meta-humor, catchy music, unapologetic bashing of modern celebrities and figures, and satirical commentary on the state of the world that will fly over kids’ heads but that adults will immediately comprehend, all while being targeted towards a general family audience. — Rendy Jones, Rendy ReviewsSo while the 1993 “Animaniacs” was aggressively self-aware, this 2020 version feels aggressively so, even defiant, as it constantly works to justify its existence. — Caroline Framke, VarietyFilled with hilarious songs, self aware main characters, and of course current event humor, the Animaniacs 2020 reboot is something that everyone can enjoy! If you like the original show, you are sure to love this one! — Tessa Smith, Mama s GeekyHulu’s Animaniacs is fun, outlandish, nostalgic, and manages to bring a fresh modern perspective. — Daniel Hart, Ready Steady CutAnimaniacs season 1 is now available on Hulu. 东南亚手游市场都有哪些特点?玩家有哪些共同特点?热门品类都是哪些?在推广策略上又有什么需要注意的地方?马上跟着小编一起来了解一下吧!

(Photo by © Netflix / Courtesy Everett Collection)After such a brutal year, you might think the Razzie Awards – the annual awards that celebrate(?) the worst of the worst in the past year of cinema – might take the day off. You d be wrong.(There will be an award acknowledging just what a struggle 2020 was for the industry, with a Special Governor s Award for 2020 marking it as “The Worst Calendar Year EVER!”.)Aside from the year itself, the other big winners/losers on nominations day were 365 Days – remember the Polish Fifty Shades of Grey-alike that got people all hot and bothered in the early days of the pandemic? – and the mega-budget Dolittle, starring Robert Downey Jr. as the titular doc with the gift of the gab when it comes to animals. Both films topped the noms tally with six nominations a piece.Controversial titles like Sia s Music and Ron Howard s Hillbilly Elegy – which became something of a critical punching bag despite much love from moviegoers, if you look at our Audience Score – also racked up plenty of noms. And a little editorial note from RT: We protest any and all nominations for Hubie Halloween, the just-Rotten Adam Sandler Halloween comedy which is an absolute romp; we have similar feelings about Kristen Wiig s nomination for Wonder Woman 1984 – her Barbara Minerva was one of the best things about the movie, according to many critics.OK, with that off our chest, here is the full list of nominations for the 41st Golden Raspberry Awards. Does that make it harder than just playing three different characters?James Wolk: In some ways, it is more challenging because you can t just go and create three different characters. You have to really think about, in a nuanced way, how someone s life can change in 10 years. So it s basically creating the same backstory from birth until 21. And then everyone takes a divergent road.Obviously, costumes and makeup play a part in this. But does that also affect your posture, your cadence, etc.?Yeah, absolutely. All three versions of this guy are so different, right? You have the rock star, who is super confident versus the nurse, who s down on his luck. I think that s a posture thing, for sure — just the way we hold ourselves when we re feeling really confident versus when we re feeling down on our luck. And then the cop, who s to me is kind of like a big kid. So he s just kind of like a big Labrador. Wardrobe help big time. There s wigs. there s a beard expert that came in and hand-laid that beard for each for each time I was rock star (Photo by NBC Entertainment)The musician character, naturally, performs a lot and the police officer sings in the pilot. You can sing. But do you play the guitar and the piano?I sing, but I sing to my kids: my four-year-old and my two-year-old. So what you hear is my voice. I do play guitar. But they did bring in a guitar aficionado to really play it. That is me singing. That is me playing guitar. And when you hear it in the mix, you re hearing the guitars, but you re getting my voice because my guitar skills are like that of a camp counselor. I can play, like, Cats in the Cradle and a couple of songs around the fire. I don t have rock-star technique. And there was a great vocal coach in Chicago. I haven t sung seriously since high school when I used to do high school musicals. And they brought in this guy and he was amazing. He added two notes to the top of my register that I never thought I could hit.In all versions of this, Joe is successful. He s a really good nurse. He s an extremely successful musician. He s a really good cop. Was that interesting? Were there conversations about having a Joe who wasn t doing well in his career? It s interesting. Nurse Joe is down on his luck, but it s with his marriage. They all have their thing [that s not going well] like, in their show, his marriage isn t going well. Music Joe: he s always wanted to be a dad. It appears in the pilot that his dad passed away on 9/11 and there s a whole backstory that will come out as the series goes on. I think, he has always wanted to replicate that father-son relationship. For him, he and his wife deal with infertility. With Cop Joe, he never moved on with his life. He froze in time; he has Peter Pan syndrome. So they all have something that s eating at all of them. You keep calling them Music Joe or Cop Joe. Is that what you call them on set or are there nicknames for them?We should get nicknames for them.(Photo by Jaimie Trueblood / © AMC / Courtesy: Everett Collection)This isn t the first time you ve played characters with a sort-of double life. You did the short-lived series Lone Star. And even your character on Mad Men, Bob Benson (pictured), had a sort of double life because he was a gay man living in the closet. Is there something that draws you to these characters?Subconsciously, I m attracted to that duality. I think that I m someone who went on this path to become an actor. But prior to this, I had so many different interests. I was attracted to that script because I felt like I had a lot of ways I wanted to go at 21 — like vastly different ways. Like grad school. Or did I want to pursue acting? Or did I want to stay in my hometown of Michigan? Or did I want to go to New York? Each one of those choices would have led me to completely different paths. I m married with two kids now. And I m in love with my wife, and I have these two amazing kids. Had I made a different choice, the probability is that I would have a totally different family. So that concept is really interesting to me.And then along those lines, Lone Star and Bob Benson: just the idea of the faces we show versus who we really are inside? It also interests me.Ordinary Joe premieres at 10 p.m. September 20 on NBC.On an Apple device? Follow Rotten Tomatoes on Apple News.

Golden Globes 2020 Red Carpet Arrivals See all the stars, celebrities, and artists who showed up on one of the biggest nights in Hollywood! by RT Staff | January 5, 2020 | Comments
Pain and Glory (2019) 96%   Spotlight Pick! Playing in only four theaters, Pedro Almodóvar s new film pulled in an impressive per-screen average last week and is set to expand to more screens this weekend. That s right, Antonio Banderas is back, finally getting his due, and we couldn t be happier. He and Almodóvar have a long history of collaboration, and now in their eighth team up, they have crafted their most highly acclaimed film. Playing in Almodóvar s signature style of autobiographical fiction, Pain and Glory follows Banderas as an aging director, who has been sidelined by chronic back pain, reflecting on his filmography, frequent collaborators, and, more importantly, his youth and those first sparks of inspiration. The result has netted both Banderas and the Bad Education director rapturous reviews since the film s Cannes Film Festival premiere earlier this year. Katie Walsh of Tribune News Service said of Almodóvar, Working with the legends of his long career to operationalize his past, [he] crafts a singularly unique and medium-specific autobiography in which cinema is inextricably linked to his own story, to his heart, soul, and body. Playing New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Washington DC, San Fransico this weekend; expanding to more screens on October 18.  Along with Judy (2019) , a biopic of the tragic starlet Judy Garland, primarily focused on the last performances of her London residence in 1963. The Peanut Butter Falcon (2019) , a drama about a man with Down syndrome who befriends a drifter and flees his assisted living facility to pursue his dreams of professional wrestling stardom. First Love (2019) , an action flick/broad comedy/pulse-racing thriller/heartfelt rom-com that follows a young boxer and a call girl through a wild night in Tokyo. Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice (2019) , a thoughtful tribute to the life and legacy of Linda Ronstadt, one of the most successful singer-songwriters in modern music. Monos (2019) , a South American Lord of the Flies – but about 1,000 times bloodier.
Which Network Came Out On Top at the 2019 Emmys?HBO, Amazon, Netflix and more who were the biggest winners at last night s Emmy Awards?Posted by The Rotten Tomatoes Channel on Monday, September 23, 2019The trophies have been handed out, the champagne has been drunk, and the dust has finally settled from the 2019 Emmy Awards, but who ultimately came out on top in the battle for network supremacy? As it turns out, it may not have been a network at all, considering major contenders from streaming services like Netflix, Amazon, and Hulu shook up the proceedings, and HBO s own Game of Thrones racked up a record 32 nominations all by itself. The night wasn t without its upsets either, as we saw a few surprising wins in categories like Drama Directing, Drama Supporting Actress,  and Comedy Lead Actress, just to name a few of the big ones. Rotten Tomatoes recently held its first Rotten Tomatoes Critics Workshop, designed to help freelance critics and journalists navigate festivals, develop industry contacts, and get their stories placed. We asked the industry professionals who spoke at our workshops to provide their top tips for freelancers; the below come from President of the African American Film Critics Association, Gil Robertson.Covering Sundance is an entertainment writer’s dream. As one of the industry’s most important festivals, it attracts the world’s biggest entertainers and decision makers. I’ve had the privilege of attending the festival for over a decade now as both a film critic and film advocate. Over the years, I have developed a few strategies that help me get the most out of each visit that I am now sharing with you. Check out some of my best practices below to help you get the most out of this incredible opportunity!1. PurposeSundance fosters a very “open” and inclusionary environment with films, installations and panel discussions that reflect the industry’s global diversity. New faces are plentiful and welcomed even, so make sure you have your game plan intact to meet your goals and get the most out of your experience. The festival is a tremendous opportunity to connect and network with those who can truly help grow your career and help you make a mark in this industry.2. PlanPlan: The best way to get what you need attending Sundance is to come pre-prepared. Study the program and be sure to sign up for all alerts. Send intro letters to PR professionals or points of contact for screenings and events that outline the coverage that you plan to provide. Also give yourself options with multiple events on your itinerary. Remember to be persistent, but not overbearing.3. WardrobeIt gets very cold in Park City, so dress warmly and layer well because you absolutely will spend a lot of time in long lines.4. PacingIt’s very easy to get overwhelmed by the glamour and fan fair at Sundance. There will be a lot of receptions, parties, premieres and even impromptu gatherings that will leave you exhausted and can throw you off track. Don’t lose your head! Enjoy everything, but remember to stay focused on your goals to manage your time wisely.5. ResponsibilityGetting Sundance media credentials is a huge opportunity and privilege and you should treat it as such. Make sure to show up to screenings and press opportunities on time. It’s also very important to file your reviews and articles covering the festival promptly so that they have the greatest impact. Doing this will ensure that you get invited back and will also provide you with entry to be invited to other film festivals.Gil Robertson is a journalist, author, and producer. Ghcxuf With classic characters such as Supergirl and Batgirl making an indelible mark on pop culture — along with more recent characters including Harley Quinn — the iconography for the DC Super Hero Girls range of comics, toys, and books was strong and the appeal immediate. Debuting in 2015 with a web series and a toy line, it re-framed characters like Batgirl and Harley as students at Super Hero High who experienced typical young teen problems along with complications from their side gigs as heroes. It eventually led to direct-to-video features, an animated broadcast special, and graphic novels as part of a continual expansion of the brand. But last week s debut of a new DC Super Hero Girls animated series on Cartoon Network, developed and executive produced by My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic’s Lauren Faust, establishes a new cartoon continuity for the brand that is separate from the web series. And as voice actors Tara Strong and Kimberly Brooks — veterans of both versions — told Rotten Tomatoes, the new series is very different from its predecessor. The show focuses on a group of girls at a Metropolis-area high school who discover they all moonlight as superheroes. The team includes Batgirl, a.k.a. Barbara Gordon (Strong); Wonder Woman, a.k.a. Diana Prince (Grey Griffin); Zatanna (Kari Wahlgren); Green Lantern, a.k.a. Jessica Cruz (Myrna Velasco); Bumblebee, a.k.a. Karen Beecher (Brooks); and Supergirl, a.k.a. Kara Danvers (Nicole Sullivan). Characters including Lena Luthor, her older brother Lex, and Barry Allen also populate the world. Harley Quinn (also Strong) even makes a cameo appearance in the series’ 60-minute debut, “#SweetJustice;” a frantic, silly, and fun introduction to the characters as they learn to be friends and heroes.(Photo by Warner Bros./Cartoon Network)“The last version was geared toward a younger audience,” Strong explained. While the earlier format “had its place” and drew in plenty of little girls who were fans of the superheroes, she noted the new show is “a lot sleeker and more sophisticated and appeals to a much broader audience.”The growing sophistication and broader intended age range also means an added emphasis on what superheroes do best: fight.“[On] this show we actually do some serious fighting,” Strong said. “We have serious weaponry. The stakes are a lot higher. In my view, it s a completely different show, although still encapsulating what it is to be a female superhero and be a teenager.”The series is also hilarious and will attract plenty of boys as well, the women added, but most importantly, it ll appeal to families.“The kids are going to like it and also there s humor that adults are going to get, too. It s not wasted on us,” Brooks said. Gags include punny names for businesses, an extended Twilight pastiche in #SweetJustice, and nods to more obscure elements of DC Comics mythology.Wahlgren credited Faust and her deep knowledge of the comics as essential to shaping the series and explicitly communicating to her stars what she wants to achieve.“She s so talented and she s also really, really open to suggestions and interpretations from the actors,” Wahlgren said. “I think we ve all had a chance to find our characters because she s given us a lot of leeway to do that.”(Photo by Warner Bros./Cartoon Network)Added Strong, “I just thanked her last week for having every single body type represented in this show. As a little girl, I was never, like, a little stick-skinny thing, and when you see magazine covers of supermodels you think, Oh is that what I m supposed to be? And so the fact that every single body shape is represented in superheroes [means] … there s an authenticity to these characters that translates.”As it happens, Faust was fostering a concept very similar to DC Super Hero Girls for ages. As part of Cartoon Network’s 2012 DC Nation block, she produced a pilot of sorts with Super Best Friends Forever, five animated shorts featuring a bulked up Supergirl (Sullivan), a tiny and energetic Batgirl (Strong), and a confident Wonder Girl (Griffin) leading the pack. So the fact that aspects of the designs and the voices return in DC Super Hero Girls is no accident.“As a concept series for these females, I thought [Super Best Friends Forever] was such a strong idea. It was not long after Powerpuff Girls and I thought, let s keep this rolling. And it didn t get picked up,” Strong recalled. The continued success of the DC Super Hero Girls range led to discussions with Faust to revive elements of Super Best Friends Forever as the new DC Super Hero Girls show. As production began, Faust produced a new version of the Super Best Friends Forever short “Time Waits for No Girl” — in which Batgirl waits for her father to go to sleep so she can join the other heroes — as DC Super Hero Girls “#TheLateBatsby,” which ran in front of the theatrical release of Teen Titans GO! to the Movies. All three actors have long associations with the DC Comics characters. Brooks voiced Oracle in the Batman: Arkham video game series, Lightning and Mari McCabe in the previous DC Super Hero Girls, and Batgirl in the Lego Batman 3: Beyond Gotham video game. Strong often voices Harley in projects as varied as the earlier DC Super Hero Girls, Batman: Arkham City, and an infamous scene on Arrow ( for which she’s credited as Deranged Squad Female ). She is also well known for voicing Raven in the Teen Titans and Teen Titans GO! animated series. Wahlgren has voiced Starfire in the DC Animated Universe direct-to-video features, Saturn Girl, and Zatanna once before in the Justice League Heroes video game. The three stars agreed that the new DC Super Hero Girls is a particularly special project. Each time they return to a character, as they do here, it requires bringing something new or different to the role depending on whether the tone of the project is dark or silly or crazy or anything else.(Photo by Warner Bros./Cartoon Network)“When we go in to audition or we meet the team, they ll say, you know, This is really dark, or, This is really silly, or, This is really crazy, ” Strong said. “You have to tweak it a little bit to match the world that you re performing in.“We become these characters in our minds, we envision ourselves,” she continued. “You could ask these girls anything about their characters, and they ll be able to tell you from a very organic place what they re all about.”With their understanding of the characters, they said the key appeal of the new DC Super Hero Girls series is their camaraderie and sense of fun.“[They’re] these kick-ass chicks doing some pretty incredible things together,” Strong said. “Navigating friendship and superhero and teenager all wrapped up in this fun, beautiful package.”In addition to inspiring feelings of empowerment, it also sparks nostalgia for the stars.“This show, I think, is so much fun because we get to tap into our youth — at least that s important to me, anyway,” Brooks said, adding, “I love that all of those different types that you went to school with in high school are represented. Everything from the more hippie, environmentally conscious to the overly theatrical girly girl, to the really shy, studious smart kid. I just feel like everybody s going to be able to see themselves in at least one of the characters.”DC Super Hero Girls airs Sundays at 4 p.m. on Cartoon Network.Like this?
