欧宝体育网页登录版采用百度引擎8(Baidu 7)Like many who have come before her, director Melina Matsoukas began her career behind the camera in the music world, crafting award-winning videos for the likes of Beyoncé, Ne-Yo, Lady Gaga, and Katy Perry, before she went on to helm episodes of critically acclaimed TV series Insecure and Master of None. It was on the latter that she first worked alongside Lena Waithe, most notably on a pivotal Thanksgiving episode centered on Waithe s character, Denise. The two of them reunite for this week s Queen Slim, Matsoukas feature directorial debut and Waithe s feature writing debut, and critics are calling their new collaboration a success. Daniel Kaluuya and Jodie Turner-Smith star as the titular duo, a young Black couple on a first date who are pulled over by a cop presumably for a routine traffic stop. The situation escalates quickly and erupts into violence, and when the cop ends up dead, Queen and Slim flee the scene and become heralded as a modern-day Bonnie and Clyde when video of the incident goes viral. Critics say Queen Slim is a provocative examination of timely issues that tackles its potentially thorny themes thoughtfully, but also roots them in a gripping drama bolstered by powerful performances from its two leads. It may not necessarily be an ideal post-turkey pick-me-up, but it should be rewarding to viewers willing to engage with it.

For almost two decades, Judd Apatow has been the king of a certain kind of American movie comedy – as he described it to Rotten Tomatoes, films about people who are stuck and whose lives are falling apart… because “life falling apart is usually funny.  In movies like Knocked Up, The 40-Year-Old Virgin, and Trainwreck, the writer and director has given us some of recent cinema’s funniest moments, from a chest-waxing scene that almost cost Steve Carell his nipple to an epic breakdown in the principal’s office courtesy of a foul-mouthed Melissa McCarthy in This Is 40. His latest comedy, The King of Staten Island, is a semi-autobiographical feature starring and co-written by Saturday Night Live star Pete Davidson, and it packs in Apatow’s signature mix of big laughs and big feels.Ahead of the movie’s release, Apatow sat down with us to break down the mechanics and stories behind some of the funniest scenes he’s put on the screen – including an messy pool fight that’s getting the biggest laughs from audiences who’ve seen his newest film.

(Photo by Robert Viglasky/Amazon)Vanity Fair’s Becky Sharp has seen her fair share of film and TV adaptations over the years — Reese Witherspoon in 2004’s film version, Natasha Little in the 1998 BBC version, Eve Matheson in the 1987 BBC version, Susan Hampshire in the 1967 BBC version — but the literary heroine gets her most modern take yet thanks to Olivia Cooke, star of Amazon’s Certified Fresh 2018 miniseries. The show, which hits Prime Video on Dec. 21, is based on the classic William Makepeace Thackeray novel, and while it’s still set in early-19th century Britain, there are plenty of modern touches that make Becky’s story feel less like a stuffy period drama and more like an evergreen story about a resourceful woman clawing her way out of poverty at any cost is applicable to any era.Gwyneth Hughes’ adaptation is set against the backdrop of the Napoleonic Wars, and features the “Villainy, crime, merriment, lovemaking, jilting, laughing, cheating, fighting, and dancing,” as Cooke’s spirited Becky climbs her way up English society all the way to the court of King George IV.In anticipation of the series’ U.S. release, Rotten Tomatoes spoke with star Cooke about playing a classic literary character, nailing a posh English accent, and what shows she’s been streaming lately. What’s appointment viewing for you?Recently, just cause it s off the top of my head, Sally4Ever, the Julia Davis HBO show. It is so outrageous. It is so, so good. I mean, me and my boyfriend are watching it and we have to watch the past episode two or three times during the week just so we can get ready for the next episode that comes out on Sunday. It is so outrageous. It is so, so good. I mean, me and my boyfriend are watching it and we have to watch the past episode two or three times during the week just so we can get ready for the next episode that comes out on Sunday. Her sense of humor is so off color and so dark and so wacky. You can kind of see the improvising, and I actually love that you can see the actors just barely holding it together because of what they re saying and what s coming out of the other person s mouth is so outrageous. It s delicious. It s so wonderful to watch. What’s on your DVR?I don t have cable! I have Amazon, I have Hulu, I have Netflix, I have HBO.What’s on your streaming queue?I just started watching on Netflix — I know, blasphemy! I m in an Amazon show — it s about all these investors trying to work out if they ought to invest in a new restaurant: Million Pound Menu. One the other day was Cuban-inspired street food that we want you to invest like 0,000 in to house six or seven restaurants around the country. I think it s these usually lovely eccentric people that just want to create a product that serves people and doesn t harm anyone else. It s low stakes, and it s really nice to kind of switch your mind off, too.The Bisexual on Hulu. I ve watched that actually in England. That was Channel Four in England, now it’s just come to Hulu. It shows the part of London that I think is quite cool and aspirational but also realistic and the writing s really good and the acting is wonderful and it’s about the sexual politics around different gendered relationships. It s really interesting.Forever on Amazon. I just finished watching. It was great. I mean, Maya Rudolph and Fred Armisen I m always there for. What’s coming soon that you can’t wait for?(Photo by Amazon Prime Video)Fleabag season 2. I m excited for that. I don t know if I m allowed to say what, so I won t, but I just worked with an actor who just filmed it and I was trying to get him to tell me secrets. I’m excited for that to come out next year. And Veep! I ve been going back recently and watching all the Veeps from the beginning to end and I m excited about that. I m especially excited to see what they do with their administration in light of everything that s happening here. It s so funny watching it a few years ago and being like, “This is crazy. This would never happen,” and then some of the storylines that were filmed before this current administration are now so realistic and so real and you re just like, “Oh my God, they are Nostradamus.”Jean Bentley for Rotten Tomatoes: I feel like being in a period historical drama is a right of passage for an English actor. So what was it like doing this, for you?Cooke: It was great. I ve done a historical period piece before but that was only two months and it was a film. But doing this for five months and getting dressed in the morning and being put into your corset and then being sewn into your dress. You kind of start the day with this weird meditation/tradition, which helps you get into

This Week s Ketchup brings you more headlines from the world of film development news, covering new titles like Don t Breathe 2, The Flash, Resident Evil, and Thomas Friends. This WEEK S TOP STORYDOCTOR STRANGE TO CO-STAR IN NEXT SPIDER-MAN(Photo by © Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)We don t know when the next Avengers will be after Avengers: Endgame, but that movie also became the box office champion of all time (a record that COVID-19 may have made impossible to break), so obviously, Marvel isn t going to give up on the Avengers theme, even if the movies don t have Avengers in the title. The fourth MCU movie on the schedule awaiting release (after Black Widow, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, and Eternals) will be the not-yet-titled third Spider-Man movie (12/17/2021) starring Tom Holland. Just last week, that movie was the focus of the surprising news that Jamie Foxx will be reprising his role as Electro from The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (starring Andrew Garfield, not Tom Holland). We now know that Benedict Cumberbatch will also be appearing in the next Spider-Man as Spidey s Avengers teammate Doctor Strange, which we l
The wait is almost over! Vin Diesel and his family — now including John Cena — are back for F9, the latest installment of the Fast Furious franchise, and it’s finally arriving in theaters on June 25. More than a month ahead of that release, though, a number of critics have had the chance to see the sequel and were permitted to share their thoughts on social media. As you’re no doubt expecting, this movie is reportedly filled with ridiculous action to the point that it’s potentially too silly in its physics-defying spectacle. Does it have any script problems? Who cares, right? Especially when Han (Sung Kang) is back and properly honored. Regardless, it’s still fun seeing the positive buzz on this highly anticipated blockbuster. Here’s what critics are saying about F9:How does F9 compare to the rest of the franchise?F9 is outrageous and one of the biggest, baddest additions to the Fast family franchise.  Shannon McGrew, Nightmarish ConjuringsF9 was AMAZING! Justin Lin s return is a high ranking entry.  Mike Reyes, CinemaBlendIt s a TON OF FUN!! This is ultimate Fast Furious.  Molly Freeman, Screen RantF9 is grandiose fun. Bombastic, brazen, bold.  Courtney Howard, Fresh FictionF9 is by far the biggest and most ridiculous Fast Furious yet. [But it’s] miles from the precision of Fast Five or the fun of Tokyo Drift.  David Ehrlich, IndieWireThis is one of the weakest entries in the franchise, probably near the bottom. If they continue this, I honestly hope they are spin-offs like Hobbs and Shaw, which I enjoyed much more.  Scott Menzel, We Live EntertainmentIt s the worst FF movie to date.  John Campea, The John Campea Show(Photo by ©Universal Pictures)How is the cast?Vin Diesel and John Cena are terrific. Tyrese is the stealth MVP. Courtney Howard, Fresh FictionTyrese steals the whole god damn show. Shannon McGrew, Nightmarish ConjuringsAlso HAN IS STILL GREAT!!! Molly Freeman, Screen RantHow is the action? The action continues to be pure bonkers adrenaline…absolute blockbuster bliss. Mike Reyes, CinemaBlendSupercharged stunts and ambitious action set pieces mix with combustible soap opera dramatics. It’s a cacophony [of] car-crunching mayhem. Courtney Howard, Fresh FictionAnything is possible, there are surprises at every turn, the stunts are at their best. Shannon McGrew, Nightmarish ConjuringsThe action feels fresh and innovative, if not necessarily bigger. Molly Freeman, Screen Rant(Photo by ©Universal Pictures)Does the plot match the spectacle? The story actually gets some exciting depths. Mike Reyes, CinemaBlendIt weaves in John Cena s Jakob in a smart way that builds on the theme of family, giving it some real heart. Molly Freeman, Screen RantIt takes a while to rev up but won me over by the end. David Ehrlich, IndieWireIt’s overly long, convoluted. Scott Menzel, We Live EntertainmentDoes it get too ridiculous? The Fast movies 4-8 work well because they embrace the ridiculousness. But at some point it s way too much. The couple of moments of laughs and charm are totally overwhelmed by the eye rolling nonsense. John Campea, The John Campea ShowF9 gets busy (too busy)… in its outer-space sequence, flirts with jumping the shark. Owen Gleiberman, VarietySo ridiculously over the top that it borders on being insulting rather than fun and entertaining. Scott Menzel, We Live EntertainmentEverything is over-the-top, and I loved every second of it. Shannon McGrew, Nightmarish ConjuringsI found myself giggling at the sheer audacity of a few of the big set pieces and some other stuff. It’ll absolutely make you forget your troubles for a few hours. Courtney Howard, Fresh FictionHearing other people laugh around me when some ridiculously over the top action happened was the best part. Thank you science. Steve Weintraub, Collider(Photo by ©Universal Pictures)So it s worth seeing in a theater? If you feel safe going I definitely definitely definitely suggest seeing it on the big screen cause wow wow wow. Shannon McGrew, Nightmarish ConjuringsMAN I MISSED GOING TO THE MOVIES. and Fast Furious 9 was definitely a fun one to be my first movie back in theaters!! Molly Freeman, Screen RantDo we need to watch all the previous movies ahead of time?I m glad I watched all eight main Fast Furious movies before seeing F9 — the movie rewards longtime fans in some cool ways. But I m gonna give myself a headache trying to make the franchise timeline make sense! You just gotta roll with it! Molly Freeman, Screen Rant[F9 delivers] satisfying answers to some important questions. Mike Reyes, CinemaBlendSo the franchise is still going strong? With Justin Lin at the helm it feels like things are finally moving in the right direction. David Ehrlich, IndieWire[There’s] plenty of gas left in the tank. Courtney Howard, Fresh FictionThis franchise has officially run out of gas. Scott Menzel, We Live EntertainmentF9 opens in theaters on June 25, 2021.On an Apple device? Follow Rotten Tomatoes on Apple News.

欧宝体育网页登录版 Tracking services took another hit this weekend, though maybe not as sharp as the one that Warner Bros. got. After all they were relying on the optimism that their Harley Quinn film was going to live up to the expectations that box office watchers had based on the awareness of their advertising. The result is a number that looks decent in a rather downbeat start to 2020, but is far from what anyone associated with the project wanted looking forward.King of the Crop: Birds of Prey Tops Weekend, but Disappoints(Photo by Warner Bros. Pictures)For weeks Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) was being touted for an opening in the million range. That would be in the Shazam!/Green Lantern range for DC properties and was already subject of some concern for the reported million production. Word-of-mouth and international sales were going to be essential to making the film a hit with 0 million worldwide the magic number to begin having that conversation. If the film were able to follow the paths of those two other films, it could have ended up in the 6 million–0 million range domestically and probably cross its profit margin with no issue. But at least part of that journey may be over right from the get-go.A .25 million start for Birds of Prey puts it in a rather precarious position. Only a third of the films opening in February between million– million have crossed the 0 million line: Get Out, Identity Thief, The Lego Movie 2, and Just Go With It. The writing was seemingly on the wall Friday morning. While some were touting million in Thursday previews as a solid start, all one had to do was look at the films grossing that specific amount to suggest Birds was off to a rocky start. The two R-rated films with that start — Annabelle: Creation ( million opening) and Blade Runner 2049 (.75 million) — a prequel and sequel from WB finished with 2 million and million, respectively. (The PG-13 films opened between million–75 million.)The film could still be saved by its international release, however. Last year, Shazam! grossed over 4 million overseas, and that is the lowest showing for a DC property since 2011 when Green Lantern only accumulated an additional 3 million internationally. Birds of Prey debuted with million overseas.

After a year off the air, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. returns to ABC for its sixth season on Friday, May 10 with a refreshed premise, a seeming departure from its big screen Marvel Cinematic Universe cousin, and a new director at the center of television’s Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division. Luckily, Rotten Tomatoes had the chance to visit S.H.I.E.L.D. HQ and debrief the cast ahead of the new season s premiere. As first revealed at the end of season 5, Alfonso Mackenzie — better known as “Mack” — succeeded the dying Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) as the head of the agency after Daisy Johnson (Chloe Bennet) turned down the position. Season 6 picks up sometime after Coulson’s apparent death, with Mack now firmly entrenched as S.H.I.E.L.D.’s director. It is a leadership role actor Henry Simmons, who plays Mack, said he loves. In previous seasons, Mack was most frequently seen offering a bewildered punchline about the group s latest adversary or impossible scenario. But now he s front and center.“Now, you have to drive the scenes as a director. I was talking with Clark about this, Simmons said. The weird thing is when you become director you feel responsible for each person, for what s happening in the scene. It s weird. And I enjoy that. I am grateful for the fact that they put it in my hands.”(Photo by ABC/Mitch Haaseth)As the actor recalled, Mack started as a mechanic who wound up in S.H.I.E.L.D. prior to the events of Captain America: The Winter Soldier. He first became part of Coulson’s team when another faction of S.H.I.E.L.D. wanted to test their loyalty following the revelation that Hydra had infiltrated the organization. But after years of dealing with demons and traveling though time, Mack grew to respect Coulson and his team. And as seen in some of the previews for the new season, Mack still refers back to a hologram of Coulson contained within Nick Fury’s (Samuel L. Jackson) toolbox from earlier seasons.“This is a daily thing,” Simmons explained. “Mack really relies on this hologram for advice, for direction … there s a lot to deal with. We have a member that s out there somewhere, a team member that we have to find. And we have an occurrence that s happening around Earth that is unpredictable and deadly.”Both objectives will hopefully allow Mack to prove to himself he was the right choice to succeed Coulson, a theme executive producer Jeff Bell said will recur through the season. In the same way that Coulson questioned his ability after Fury — Can I be a director? Do I have what it takes?  — I think Mack is going through his own version of that, he said.Meanwhile, the missing team member Simmons mentioned is Fitz (Iain De Caestecker), who also died at the end of season 5. But thanks to the malleable nature of time travel on the series, an earlier version of Fitz is still alive somewhere in deep space and it’s up to a team comprised of Daisy, Jemma Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge), Agent Piper (Briana Venskus), and Agent Davis (Maximilian Osinski) to find him.(Photo by ABC/Mitch Haaseth)For Daisy, the mission is particularly fraught considering the future version of Fitz tried to kill her to prevent the world from ending. (Things got a little crazy last season.) But this Fitz never hurt her.“I think the one thing that connects all of them is that they re all trying to be the best versions of themselves, but still at the end of the day, there s darkness within every character, Bennet said. That darkness may be most apparent in Jemma Simmons, whose dedication to finding Fitz tests the patience of the others as the season begins.“Ethically she s just so biased on finding him. So she is not worried about other people s feelings. She doesn t care what the consequences are,” Henstridge said of her character’s state of mind. She noted the character has become single-minded before, but never to this extent — threatening the lives of the others. “She s can t fit anything else in her head at the moment, because as soon as she starts to think about other people, she ll start to think about the crazy odds of what she s trying to do and she ll break down.”For Piper and Davis, the mission means a certain sacrifice, but for Venskus and Osinski, it means a promotion. After appearing on the series off-and-on for the past four years, both will feature regularly for the first time this season. It means an expansion of the characters and a new role for them to share.“We are kind of like the everyman of the show,” Osinski explained, adding, “We don t have superpowers; we don t have robotic arms or special weapons. Said Venskus, “We re the ones who are more surprised by things still — which is kind of cool. We provide that comedic relief of being, like, ‘This isn t normal, right?’”They are, however, highly trained S.H.I.E.L.D. agents who managed to survive just about every upheaval since S.H.I.E.L.D. s initial fall in The Winter Soldier. As Venskus put it, that means Piper went to from learning about aliens in her first episode to treating space travel like “no big deal” in season 6. And if previous seasons are any indication, the duo s deep space adventure will continue for quite awhile.(Photo by ABC/Matthias Clamer)Back on Earth, Mack and the rest of the team face those anomalies Simmons mentioned. They crisscross the planet in something resembling a pattern. And as previews have hinted at, it may have something to do with Gregg’s new character, Sarge; a sort of “anti-Coulson” who is as much of a mystery as the anomalies.“They have a similar drive and focus,” Gregg said of Coulson and Sarge. “They re both, I think, not someone whose willpower you want to question. But everything else, the moral framework, all that stuff, is different.”According to executive producer Jed Whedon, Sarge’s frame of mind will be “so shocking to people” that it “actually has its own power.” At the same time, watching Sarge make the choices he does while looking and sounding like Coulson “gives those moments more weight than they normally would have.”“It was very, very hard to get my balance,” Gregg said of switching gears into Sarge. “It really felt odd. There s a part of [his thinking] that s so clean. He has a mission and he does [it] life means nothing to him. He wants what he wants. And he s going to get it done. And that s very freeing, and it s kind of sexy, it feels like it s fun. And yet I had a lot of questions about how he s justifying that.”One character also having a hard time justifying Sarge’s presence is Agent Melinda May (Ming-Na Wen). She stayed with Coulson during his last days and returned to S.H.I.E.L.D. a “freer” person. As Wen put it, “She doesn t have the burden of dealing with either him being sick or die or come back after he died and die again.”(Photo by ABC/Matthias Clamer)Of course, that sense of freedom gets “skewered” when she first sees Sarge.“It s a moment of disbelief and major angst for her,” Wen explained. But once May understands the real story behind Sarge, the character will have a familiar Melinda May reaction. “She s pissed,” Wen added. “She s really pissed.”Beyond her reaction to Coulson, May brings her experience and honesty back to S.H.I.E.L.D. This includes an advisory role to Mack and Yo-Yo (Natalia Cordova- Buckley). The latter continues to serve as a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent and, but Cordova-Buckley noted that her character has undergone a shift from the rebellious Yo-Yo we first met.“It was really interesting for me to go from a girl that s so [about] her word, her mind, her beliefs, and always really going against anything that goes against that,  Cordova-Buckley said, to now saying, You know what, there s a bigger picture. I need to be more diplomatic. I need to settle the fire down and find my way within the institution, the bureaucracy, and all that stuff. ”That said, Cordova-Buckley said Yo-Yo may still decline a leadership position within S.H.I.E.L.D., although she would become a great leader if circumstances forced the role upon her.“I get a sense that she would rather be a mentor of sorts to young children, to Inhumans coming up, to sort of be the leader underground, she said. Not the face of [a group]. (Photo by ABC/Matthias Clamer)Circumstances always change quickly for S.H.I.E.L.D., both within its world and without. Last season, events appeared to coincide with Thanos s (Josh Brolin) arrival on Earth to collect the Time and Mind Stones. But as the series was unclear when it would coming back — or even if it would come back — they could not plan a proper connection with the events of Avengers: Infinity War or Avengers: Endgame. That means the slightest bit of retconning will be on display in the season to come.“However the Time Lords want to work it out, all of this had to happen before the Snap,” executive producer Jeph Loeb explained. “Otherwise, we d be living in the world that was brilliantly showed in Endgame.”Then again, perhaps Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will employ the notion of tangent timelines to explain itself in some yet-to-be-written episode. The show always excels at finding the odd corners of the MCU to examine and that would be a fine one to use. In the meantime, though, S.H.I.E.L.D. has plenty of personal crises and intergalactic stakes to keep themselves busy ahead of the already planned season 7.Like this? (Photo by ©History Channel)In the Vikings Season 6 midseason finale earlier this year, brothers Ivar and Bjorn shared a dream-like sequence on the beach while the battle between their respective armies raged around them. Ivar, who at that point had the upper hand, calmly and cloyingly assured Bjorn that he lost favor with the gods long ago, and that he was destined to lose this war. The episode then ended with the shock of Ivar’s sword stabbing clean through his brother’s abdomen. Bjorn falls to the ground, possibly dead, as the rest of his army retreats from the Rus around him. While Vikings is no stranger to the season finale cliffhanger, this one in particular left us with a lot of question marks as they relate to our hero Bjorn. Is he dead, or will he live to fight another day? Is there the possibility that the stabbing was also part of a larger surreal dream sequence? What could possibly be next for our viking hero?If you’re like us and have been waiting for months to get answers to these questions and more, you’re in luck: The final season premiered in full Dec. 30 on Amazon Prime Video before it’s set to debut in weekly installments at its original home on History. To talk about the big premiere, we jumped on the phone with the actor behind Bjorn himself, Alexander Ludwig, and creator and showrunner Michael Hirst. Warning: If you haven’t yet watched the season 6B premiere, we recommend you stop reading this article, as THERE ARE MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD!(Photo by Bernard Walsh/©History Channel)Now, with the proper spoiler warning behind us, let’s talk about the bleeding elephant in the room: Bjorn, indeed, is dead. He survived the battle at the end of 6A, but is gravely wounded and expected to pass from infection. But miraculously from his deathbed, with the Rus army returning to battle, he musters the energy and the courage to put on his armor and ride into battle with all the viking armies of Norway at his back. Uniting them all in a way that King Harald couldn t, Bjorn saves his home country and forces Ivar, Oleg, and the rest of the Rus army to retreat. It’s while leading the vikings into battle that he takes a round of arrows to the chest and dies a hero atop his horse, leading the charge.“I felt like it was the send-off that the character deserved and that the fans deserved—and what I loved about it was it definitely wasn’t something that most people would’ve expected,” Ludwig says of his beloved character’s final moments. “It was such poetic justice… In those final moments for Bjorn, he’s finally become the man that he always hoped he could be and that his father always knew he could be. I really couldn’t have asked for a better send-off.”(Photo by Jonathan Hession/©History Channel)Hirst says that while Bjorn has accomplished some great things, up until this point, his life “hasn’t altogether been a success,” considering his poor decisions while ruling Kattegat, his inability to win the kingship of all Norway (“He didn’t come out of that looking very smart”), and his consistent mistreatment of the women in his life. Throw into the mix his mounting heartbreaks and losses in the last season alone with the deaths of his son and unborn child, his mother Lagertha, and the leave of his brother Hvitserk after he pledges allegiance to Ivar, and Bjorn was in quite a low spot for a man who was expected to live up to the legacy of his father, Ragnar.“In some senses, if he died only having done those things, his life might not have lived up to the expectations of Ragnar Lothbrok; it could’ve been not a memorable life,” Hirst admits. But having died in battle while uniting the viking kingdoms against the Rus and essentially sacrificing himself in the process? That was “completely redeeming,” Hirst says. “He summons up extraordinary willpower to do something quite remarkable and to save his country. So his ending is tragic and heroic and wonderful all at the same time. And I was so pleased to come to that ending for him. I think he deserved to be redeemed. His last actions and by what he did, he was certainly the son of Ragnar.”Bjorn, for what it’s worth, seems to know that he could have been a better man in this life. “I wish with all my heart I could go back and start again,” he laments in the premiere, wounded and bedridden. But it’s in part his guilt that drives him to do the courageous thing in the end.(Photo by Jonathan Hession/©History Channel)“I think it’s less him being forgiven by others and more about him forgiving himself,” Ludwig posits of the character’s redemption arc. “He’s finally been able to forgive himself for simply being human. That, to me, was a really beautiful moment to be able to play. It certainly wasn’t an easy one for me to do, and I’m so grateful for the opportunity.”So it’s with a heavy heart that we report Ludwig’s time as Bjorn has come to an end—at least as the living-in-the-flesh version of the viking we’ve come to know. (Both creator and star refused to say if we see more of him later in the final season.) The actor first made his debut as Ragnar’s son a whopping six years ago, and he has in turn grown up himself onscreen with the role.“When Alexander joined us, he was very young, and he behaved like it!” Hirst says with a laugh. “He had a very puppy-ish way about him. He was very spirited and full of youthful energy, and he was so in awe of the show and where he was and being cast and he loved everything about it. One of the great joys was to watch Alexander mature as a man and as an actor until he could carry the show, as it were. He [now] looks like a man who has been through many, many difficult circumstances and situations. He does no longer look like a puppy.(Photo by ©History Channel courtesy Everett Collection)“We put him through some pretty tough experiences, and he did it, he did everything totally uncomplainingly,” the creator continues. “And he was on the show for a long time! If you think about it, the show is really about him because it starts with him being a young boy and it ends with his death many, many years later. Meanwhile, both of his parents have died, and he’s a consistent factor in the whole show, him and his younger self. I hold him in the highest esteem.”Ludwig says that he was lucky to know from the start that the total of Bjorn’s arc would be a great one. He’s known for some time, too, that Bjorn’s end was near. The biggest challenge along the way was also the greatest pleasure: growing and developing with the role and rising to the new demands of each episode, each season. And finally, the concluding moments of the character dying while sitting horseback, sword drawn, came together after much conversation between Ludwig and Hirst.“Michael sat me down and pitched the idea of what he was thinking, and he said he wanted it to be reminiscent of El Cid [with Charlton Heston], and I felt like that would be amazing,” Ludwig says. “Furthermore, it was important that Bjorn help carry this story over, and I felt like it was such an ingenious idea for Bjorn to leave at the beginning of the season as opposed to the end, because I don’t believe it’s nearly as predictable. It gives room to really conclude the story for the other brothers.”(Photo by Bernard Walsh/©History Channel)As far as what he’ll miss most? Well, sometimes, it’s about the vikings you meet along the way.“I will certainly miss the opportunity to explore this kind of growth of a human being and eventually a leader, but I also loved the world; I loved everything about this show, but most important, the family we created,” Ludwig concludes. “It sounds so cliche, but it’s so true. I spent six years with the same crew, the same cast (give or take). I spent 11 months out of the year [filming] in Ireland for six years. So it’s bittersweet because I’m so grateful to be back home surrounded by my friends and family because I miss them so much, but I’m also gonna miss my other family, and that’s the family I created in Ireland.”Part 2 of the final season of Vikings premiered December 30, 2020, on Amazon Prime Video.
