He was recognized an immediate potential star with his debut The Impossible, the dramatization of a family swept away by the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. In 2015, he was announced as the new Peter Parker, with Spider-Man swinging over into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He made his debut in Captain America: Civil War, with Peter s wide-eyed sincerity a standout character trait against the superhero mayhem. Holland carried through with two of his own Spider-Man movies and emotional appearances in Infinity War and Endgame.Playing Spidey must take up significant on-camera time, as a lot of Holland s recent non-Marvel work has been voices in films like Spies in Disguise, Dolittle, and Onward. Beyond that, he also kept busy right on through the pandemic, releasing three films The Devil All the Time, Chaos Walking, and Cherry, the latter of which re-teamed him with Avengers directors Joe and Anthony Russo and he not only has another Spider-Man movie scheduled for late 2021, but he s also currently filming the Uncharted movie as Nathan Drake. The young star is officially a quarter-century old now, and to celebrate, we look at all Tom Holland movies by Tomatometer!

Women tended to prefer shows like Downton Abbey (16 percent of women vs. 5 percent of men) and Lucifer (14 percent vs. 7 percent), while men went for The Mandalorian (33 percent vs. 19 percent) and Breaking Bad (31 percent vs. 18 percent). The biggest generational split? That would be The Office — 22 percent of 18- to 34-year-olds picked the NBC sitcom versus only 2 percent of the 55 and over crowd. Conversely, 21 percent of the 55+ demographic chose Downton Abbey versus just 4 percent of the 18-34 demo.Plenty of network sitcoms made the list, but prestige cable dramas also scored many spots on the list. The oldest series is Friends, while the newest entry is Amazon s meta comic book series The Boys.Check out the list below and let us know if your favorites rank where you think they should.亚博APP下载官网安卓(Photo by Melinda Sue Gordon/©Warner Bros. Pictures/courtesy Everett Collection)All Christopher Nolan Movies Ranked by TomatometerChristopher Nolan had such a perfect outsider journey into Hollywood filmmaking, he makes transforming into one of the world s foremost A-list directors look simple. First, you make your requisite black-and-white feature debut for less than a half-million dollars (Following) in England. Then you come over to America, put together an inventive, almost revolutionary indie (Memento), which gets you invited into the big studio system for Insomnia, where two seasoned pros like Robin Williams and Al Pacino can recognize an up-and-coming talent and agree to star. Then, boom: You re good to go in your new career as a rising director. For Nolan, the next step up was a surprising move at the time: Resurrecting Bruce Wayne for Batman Begins, whose big-screen reputation had been trashed by Batman Robin. With The Prestige, he really began to establish himself as a brand and icon whose pictures you can rely on to feature slick-as-ice style, heavy dollops of science fiction, mind-warping concepts and resolutions, and a growing repertoire of actors to fulfill his vision. Inception and Interstellar certainly fit this mold, while The Dark Knight (and its Rises sequel, to an extent) revolutionized comic book movies and pop culture fandom. And lest we think he forgot his roots, Dunkirk was a worthy movie monument to the WWII military evacuation s inspirational stature within British society.Nolan s next film is Tenet, whose release has shifted with the sands of time in the ongoing pandemic. Its currently slated for an international August 26 debut, followed by a rollout to the American market starting September 3. Until then, we re ranking all Christopher Nolan movies by Tomatometer!
The Black Hole (1979) 38% (Photo by © Buena Vista courtesy Everett Collection)The Black Hole is one of the forgotten sci-fi films that came in the wake of the original Star Wars, only this was more of a disaster and horror film with a Dante’s Inferno vibe than a traditional Disney film – and it was the studio s first movie released with a PG rating. It features then-cutting-edge special effects, a star-studded cast (including Robert Forster and Anthony Perkins), and a dark story that isn’t common in Disney movies anymore. David Cornelius wrote for eFilmCritic that it ranks among the very best films to come from the post-Star Wars sci-fi boom. The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes (1969) 50%(Photo by Walt Disney Productions)Long before he played iconic action heroes in the 1980s, young Kurt Russel was the star of a bizarre series of movies for Disney. These movies followed his character, affable college student Dexter Riley, in a series of ridiculous adventures. The first of them was The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes, in which Dexter accidentally becomes a human computer after being electrocuted. What does he do with this power? Well, help his quiz team reach the nationals while he unwittingly helps bust a gambling ring, of course! It’s a funny comedy carried by Russell’s innate charisma, which was enough to make him return for two sequels that saw Dexter fall victim to further freak accidents.FUZZBUCKET (1986)(Photo by Samuel Goldwyn Company)Remember when kids movies were the stuff of nightmares? Fuzzbucket remembers. Fuzzbucket is clearly a blatant attempt to capitalize on the success of E.T. and ALF, only without the cutesy friendship of the Spielberg movie or the weird sarcasm of the puppet-powered sitcom. Visually, Fuzzbucket is something of an abomination, but he still becomes best friends with a young boy named Michael. The twist? He can turn invisible, so for most of the movie, the characters think Michael is talking to an imaginary friend. Fuzzbucket is a bizarre, yet funny, and at times even heartfelt movie that will still haunt your nightmares.Gus (1976) Back in the 1970s, Disney was all about Don Knotts playing oddball characters in comedies, but no movie of his had a premise as off kilter as Gus. Before the endless Air Bud movies put a golden retriever at the center of every sport imaginable, this film made a mule the best football player around, even taking his team to the Super Bowl. With an inspiring message and a cast that manages to play the whole thing straight, this is a Disney movie you have to see to believe. Writing for Common Sense Media, Randy White declared that “kids will get a kick out of this mule tale.”Halloweentown (1998) 80% (Photo by © Disney Channel courtesy Everett Collection)Before Harry Potter sent readers to a school of witchcraft and wizardry, a Disney Channel movie sent us to Halloweentown, a surreal fantasy that introduced many kids to the wonders of horror and practical monster effects. The story follows a 13-year-old girl who discovers she comes from a family of witches, and who has to fight an evil that threatens to destroy the titular town, where all sorts of monsters live in harmony. Variety critic Laura Fries wrote, “What separates this original pic from the usual Halloween fare is that it captures the spirit of a holiday designed for kids. It s sweet and fun, but too much could definitely give you a stomach ache.” The movie not only has a great kid-friendly horror atmosphere, but it also stars the late, great Debbie Reynolds as an inspirational witch, and there are three sequels all on Disney+ to boot. The Luck of the Irish (2001) (Photo by © Hal Roach Studios courtesy Everett Collection)The Disney Channel was full of genre movies with crazy concepts. One of the best one is about a junior high basketball star named Kyle who happens to be extremely lucky in life. When he tries to look into where his family comes from for Heritage Day, he discovers that he has roots in Ireland, and also that he is slowly turning into a leprechaun because someone stole his lucky gold coin. What comes next is a wacky, funny, and heartwarming story of the importance of diversity and how history shapes who we are.Bride of Boogedy (1987) 20% (Photo by Disney+)A novelty salesman moves his family to a town called Lucifer Falls (red flag, anyone?) and discovers that their new home is haunted. This made-for-TV movie was a rare horror film made by Disney that served as a gateway horror for many kids, and featured one of the ugliest and scariest ghosts ever to appear in a family-friendly film. Come for the horror, stay for Mimi Kennedy’s fantastic performance as the mother who tries to invite a ghost in for coffee. As critic Rachel Wagner of Rachel’s Reviews said, “I think you ll have a really good time with your family watching Mr. Boogedy.”Phantom of the Megaplex (2000) (Photo by Disney Channel Productions)What if Phantom of the Opera was remade for kids and set in a movie theater? The Phantom of the Megaplex, another Disney Channel original movie, has something for everyone. Horror fans will enjoy the nods to the classic Universal movies, kids will laugh at the jokes and the zany characters, movie and TV fans will appreciate the addition of Mickey Rooney to the cast, and movie theater employees new and old will instantly connect to the real horrors that the protagonists go through. Cinema Crazed’s Felix Vasquex Jr. wrote that it s “an unusual but entertaining DCOM that really does have its heart in the right place.”The Shaggy D.A. (1976) 50% Made 17 years after the original The Shaggy Dog, this sequel features a lawyer who suddenly transforms into a dog while on the campaign trail for District Attorney. Honestly, its tagline “The only candidate with a law degree and a pedigree” should be enough to pique your interest, but the ridiculous dog costume and Dean Jones’s over the top performance are likely to seal the deal. 7 Pictures’ Kevin Carr wrote, “It s a goofy story, and it s far from a brilliant movie, but The Shaggy D.A. is a fun romp for a family to watch.”That Darn Cat! (1965) 94% Have you ever tried catching bank robbers with nothing but a Siamese cat as your lead? Welcome to That Darn Cat!, which follows the misadventures of two FBI agents tasked with following the only witness to a hostage situation – a cat – to try and locate the thieves hideout. Come for the ridiculous premise, stay for one fantastic four-legged actor and a Sherman Brothers-written title song. Time Out critic Trevor Johnston wrote, “The two legged cast play second string to the marvellous moggie.”The Thirteenth Year (1999) (Photo by Disney Enterprises, Inc.)After Splash got nominated for an Oscar and The Little Mermaid jumpstarted the Disney animated renaissance, Disney decided to continue its mermaid tradition, only cheaper and made for TV. The result was The Thirteenth Year, the story of a teenage boy who was abandoned by his birth mother – a mermaid – and was raised by human parents. When he hits puberty, he grows gills and becomes a great swimmer, but he also somehow inherits the ability to climb walls and control electricity. The Thirteenth Year is a charming coming-of-age story that also gets very close to being a Spider-Man movie.Like this? 0.85.5 1月喜迎Today s Ketchup brings you another 10 headlines from the world of film development news, covering such titles as Dune and Space Jam 2, and new roles for Chris Hemsworth, Michael B. Jordan, and Charlize Theron. This WEEK S TOP STORYTHOR STAR WILL SMASH PUNY WRESTLERS AS HULK (HOGAN)(Photo by Hopper Stone/Columbia Pictures)Professional wrestling may not be as popular as it once was, but that s also relative to exactly how popular it once was, like in the 1980s and the 1990s. The World Wrestling Federation s top star, at the height of their popularity, was indisputably Terry Bollea, AKA Hulk Hogan. Unlike the WWF/WWE s other most popular star, Dwayne The Rock Johnson, Hulk Hogan was never able to convert his wrestling fame to movie star fame, but he was still very, very popular, including starring in a Saturday morning cartoon, many video games, and four seasons of the Hogan Knows Best reality show. Throw in this far-reaching legal ruling, and it makes total sense that Netflix is following up on GLOW with a Hulk Hogan biopic from director Todd Phillips (The Hangover, October s Joker). What s perhaps more surprising is that the famously Floridian wrestler will be played by Australia s Chris Hemsworth (that s right, Thor s going to play Hulk). Having said that, Hemsworth has already shown that he can drop his Aussie accent in movies like Cabin in the Woods and Bad Times at the El Royale. Netflix s film will reportedly focus mostly on Terry Bollea s creation of the Hulk Hogan persona, and the height of his popularity during the Hulkamania era. (If you ve ever been curious about how Bollea was able to even call himself Hulk Hogan, you can actually read his 1985 contract with Marvel Comics right here.)Fresh Developments1. DUNE WORM SURFS INTO PRIME NOVEMBER 2020 RELEASE DATE(Photo by Ben Rothstein/Marvel Studios)One of the hottest times of the year to release a movie is the middle of November, right before Thanksgiving. Notably, that s the period when four of the Harry Potter movies were released, and until this week, it was also when Warner Bros. had scheduled the third Fantastic Beasts prequel (which is now on hold following the second film s disappointing box office). Instead, WB has scheduled their remake of Dune for November 20, 2020, which instantly made it the last big movie scheduled before James Cameron s Avatar 2 (12/18/2020). The writing has been on the sand for a few weeks now that Dune might be a huge movie, as it features an all-star cast that includes Timothée Chalamet (as Paul Atreides), Javier Bardem, Dave Bautista, Josh Brolin, Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Jason Momoa, Stellan Skarsgard, and Zendaya. This week, David Dastmalchian, who had a supporting role in Marvel s Ant-Man and the Wasp, also joined the cast as Piter De Vries (played by Brad Dourif in the 1984 Dune). This Dune remake is being directed by Denis Villeneuve, who has never scored below 71% on the Tomatometer and whose last three films were all Certified Fresh at 86% or higher.2. DANIEL KALUUYA, LAKEITH STANFIELD JOIN BLACK PANTHER BIOPIC JESUS WAS MY HOMEBOY (Photo by Justin Lubin/Universal Pictures)Every once in a while, a new project comes along that takes elements from a few different recent box office (or critical) hits and puts them all in a blender to produce an intriguing new film. For this story, the movies in question are Black Panther, Mudbound, Get Out, and Sorry to Bother You. Daniel Kaluuya (Get Out) is in talks to star as Black Panther Party member Fred Hampton in a biopic called Jesus Was My Homeboy for Warner Bros. Lakeith Stanfield, who starred in Sorry to Bother You and had a small supporting role in Get Out, is also in talks for the film, which will be produced for the studio by Black Panther director Ryan Coogler and Charles D. King (Mudbound, Sorry to Bother You). Coogler is also working with Warner Bros. on 2021 s Space Jam 2 (more on that below).3. JAMES BOND 25 AND FAST FURIOUS 9 SCHEDULED FOR APRIL AND MAY OF 2020 (Photo by Francois Duhamel/Columbia Pictures)Both James Bond 25 and Fast Furious 9 were already scheduled for release next year, but this week saw both films shifting their specific release dates. Let s start with James Bond 25 (the title will definitely change before release), which had been scheduled for Valentine s Day, but has now been shifted back two months to April 8, 2020. That move is good news for the animated fantasy adventure Nimona, which is still scheduled for February 14, 2020. James Bond 25 is taking the date formerly occupied by Fast Furious 9, which has been pushed back a month to May 22, 2020, up against The SpongeBob Movie: It s a Wonderful Sponge (and a week before Disney s Maleficent II). Neither Fast Furious 9 nor James Bond 25 have actually started filming yet. James Bond 25 is scheduled to start production in April, and screenwriter Scott Z. Burns (Contagion, Side Effects) has been hired to rewrite the screenplay with just four weeks to work on it. Daniel Craig will be working on James Bond 25, and then in the spring of 2020 he will move on to The Creed of Violence, set during the Mexican Revolution in 1910.4. MICHAEL B. JORDAN TO STAR IN A JOURNAL FOR JORDAN (Photo by Marvel Studios)2018 was a big year for Michael B. Jordan, as he starred in Black Panther, HBO s Fahrenheit 451 remake, and the Rocky franchise sequel Creed II. Hollywood hasn t been shy about giving him more opportunities either, including the bestselling book adaptation Just Mercy (1/17/2020) and Tom Clancy s Without Remose (9/18/2020). Two other Michael B. Jordan projects moved forward this week, starting with Lionsgate s action thriller The Silver Bear, which will be directed by Gerard McMurray (2018 s The First Purge), who was also one of the producers on Jordan s breakout drama Fruitvale Station. The Silver Bear is based on a series of bestselling novels by Derek Haas (showrunner of NBC s various Chicago shows), so it s seen as a potential franchise starter. Jordan is also (rather appropriately) in talks to star in A Journal for Jordan, a drama expected to be Denzel Washington s next film as director (his Fences was Certified Fresh at 92%).5. CHARLIZE THERON IS NETFLIX S LATEST BIG STAR AS A MEMBER OF THE OLD GUARD (Photo by Andres Otero/Everett Collection)Netflix s recent hit thriller Bird Box, starring Sandra Bullock, was far from the streamer s first star-driven project (Brad Pitt s War Machine comes to mind, too), but it definitely showed that Hollywood A-listers are open to working with them. The latest one to sign on at Netflix is Charlize Theron, who will star in the action movie The Old Guard. The film will be based on the Image Comics title of the same name created by writer Greg Rucka (Wonder Woman) and artist Leandro Fernandez (Deadpool, Punisher: MAX). Theron and KiKi Layne (If Beale Street Could Talk) will play members of a group of immortal mercenaries who must fight to keep their team together when they discover the existence of a new immortal and their extraordinary abilities are exposed. The Old Guard will be directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, who at one point had been expected to direct the Black Cat/Silver Sable movie for Sony Pictures.6. THIS WEEK IN MARVEL: GWYNETH PALTROW DONE, BLACK WIDOW AND LOKI (SERIES) NEWS(Photo by Zade Rosenthal/Marvel Studios)The influence and success of Marvel Studios is so pervasive that it s a rare week with no development news from their corner. This was a relatively slow week, but there were still at least three items of note. The story that seemed to receive the most notice came from Gwyneth Paltrow, who basically announced that after Avengers: Endgame (4/26/2019) she is done playing her Iron Man character Pepper Potts. With no confirmed future Marvel movies for Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man (yet), it s sort of unsurprising, but in the same way, it could be interpreted as a hint that Downey may be the next big Marvel star to drop out (after Chris Evans, who s done as Captain America). One female character Marvel Studios is definitely not done with is Scarlett Johansson s Black Widow, who is expected to get her own film sometime in the 2020 to 2022 range. To that end, the studio has hired screenwriter Ned Benson (The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby) to rewrite the Black Widow screenplay begun by Jac Schaeffer (TiMER, The Hustle). This move is raising some eyebrows because Black Widow, which will be directed by Cate Shortland, had been seen as a heavily female-led production. Finally, in related news, the Loki series that will stream on the upcoming Disney+ app will be written by Michael Wadron of the popular animated series Rick and Morty.7. LEBRON JAMES SPACE JAM 2 CONFIRMED FOR THE SUMMER OF 2021(Photo by Jason Miller/Getty Images)There has seemingly been talk about a Space Jam sequel pretty much since the weekend that the Looney Tunes basketball movie (Rotten at 38%) first came out in 1996. Although it s true that LeBron James has been talking about Space Jam 2 for a while, a skeptical fan still could have wondered if this thing would really happen. Well, Warner Bros. is making it official this week, as the studio has announced a Space Jam 2 release date of July 16, 2021. This puts the CGI/basketball hybrid comedy a week after Indiana Jones 5 and a week before Mission: Impossible 7. The other big move from Warner Bros. this week shifted Godzilla vs Kong (the fourth of their monster movies after this year s Godzilla: King of the Monsters, 5/31/2019) from May 22, 2020 to March 13, 2020. That May 22, 2020 date is where Fast and Furious 9 is now scheduled, and the new competition for Godzilla vs Kong on March 13, 2020 is the less imposing John Cena movie Playing with Fire.
Fan Favorite Actresses 2019With critically acclaimed work in award-worthy films and crowd-pleasing roles in broad entertainment, there was no shortage of memorable actresses who left their mark on pop culture in 2019. Our list of 25 Favorite Actress Golden Tomato Award candidates included a pair of Game of Thrones alumni (Emilia Clarke and Maisie Williams), a quartet of MCU heroines (Brie Larson, Scarlett Johansson, Zendaya, and Tessa Thompson), and genre-hopping work from versatile stars (Awkwafina in The Farewell and Jumanji: The Next Level, Florence Pugh in Midsommar and Little Women). Only one of them, however, was nominated for two Academy Awards in acting categories, and she appropriately blew away all of the competition to win the GTA here. Not only did Scarlett Johansson serve a crucial role in Avengers: Endgame, but her turn as a frustrated wife and mother going through a divorce in Noah Baumbach s Marriage Story and her work as the titular character s activist mother in Taika Waititi s Jojo Rabbit earned her Oscar nominations for both Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress, respectively. While she didn t win either of those awards, she was the runaway favorite here, more than tripling the tally of runner-up Emilia Clarke as she earned almost a third of all the votes. The order below reflects the number of total votes cast for each TV show by users in a poll that ran on RT from January 9 to February 16.« Previous Category Next Category »Scarlett JohanssonNot only did Johansson break our hearts in Endgame, but she earned two Oscar nominations, one for Best Actress for Marriage Story and one for Best Supporting Actress for Jojo Rabbit. 亚博APP下载官网安卓 Few industries enjoy taking really, really long extended holiday vacations quite like Hollywood, and when we get to this time of the year, there s rarely much in the realm of “movie development news” to discuss. Last week, we reviewed 12 of the year’s top Fresh Developments, and this week, we’re looking at each month s most Rotten Idea.JANUARY: JOHN CENA MIGHT STAR AS DUKE NUKEM (Photo by Mary Cybulski/Universal Pictures)Video games continue to be the source of the most Rotten Tomatometer scores (presuming you don t count video-game-adjacent titles like Wreck-It Ralph and Ready Player One). Regardless, Hollywood is still making lots of these movies, despite the relatively low box office on average. There were several news stories about such projects this year, including Sonic the Hedgehog, Monster Hunter, and Dance Dance Revolution. The project that stands out for 2018, though, is Duke Nukem, if only both because it is a project that s been in development since the 1990s and because the source games don t always gets great reviews either. In January, John Cena was reportedly talking to Michael Bay s production company about starring as Duke Nukem. The involvement of Bay and Cena got a little murky recently, but the project is now also being produced by the people who delivered a Assassin s Creed (Rotten at 17%), so Duke Nukem remains a dismal prospect.FEBRUARY: MICHAEL BAY MAY DIRECT DC S BAD BOY LOBO(Photo by Jaimie Trueblood/Paramount courtesy Everett Collection)The first Transformers film following Michael Bay s departure as director was last week s Bumblebee, which is currently enjoying a Certified Fresh 92% Tomatometer score. Instead, Bay is now turning his camera flares and limited color grading towards Warner Bros. DC Comics projects. In February, Bay started talking to WB about possibly directing their long-in-development Lobo movie, based on the cosmic bad boy character who s sort of a cross between Marvel s Deadpool and Guardians of the Galaxy. The film s budget is currently reported as 0 million, so bringing that down will be one of the challenges Michael Bay will face.MARCH: CAPTAIN AMERICA CONFIRMS HE S DONE AFTER AVENGERS: ENDGAME (Photo by Marvel Studios)When you follow movie development news, sometimes a story takes on a second life because not everyone picked up on it the first time around. This year, we saw that happen with a story reported not just for the second time, but a third time as well. You see, we first told you that Chris Evans was hanging up his Captain America shield way back in 2017. Then this year, in March, Chris Evans confirmed that with another announcement. Despite telling the world twice, it was Evans tweet in October that finally seemed to reach the widest audience. Even so, we expect that people are probably going to be surprised in April as well, when Evans departs as Captain America in Avengers: Endgame. Having said that, maybe he s not really done with Marvel Comics, particularly with Fantastic Four likely to join the MCU in the 2020s. Is Michael Chiklis still available too?APRIL: LAWSUIT MIGHT MEAN WE NEVER GET ANOTHER TRIP DOWN FURY ROAD (Photo by Jasin Boland/Warner Bros.)Not every Rotten Idea is based on Tomatometer scores some stories are Rotten because they mean movies with extremely Fresh potential might not happen. That s absolutely what happened in April as we learned about a lawsuit that may jeopardize a fan favorite sequel. One of the most surprising films of 2015 was the sequel/reboot Mad Max: Fury Road, which won dozens of awards, including six of the ten Academy Awards it was nominated for. Though Mad Max: Fury Road was a triumph for its director, George Miller, he found himself engaged in what is being called a bitter court battle with Warner Bros. over what Miller s production company claims is high-handed, insulting, or reprehensible behavior. The financial crux of Miller s lawsuit involves what he says were promised bonuses for bringing Mad Max: Fury Road in under budget, and for breaching a co-financing agreement. Miller reportedly has had screenplays for both Mad Max 5 and Mad Max 6 completed for years, but for now, he s directing Idris Elba and Tilda Swinton in Three Thousand Years of Longing instead.MAY: TWO OF WILL SMITH S ROTTEN FILMS GET POTENTIALLY ROTTEN SEQUELS (Photo by Columbia courtesy Everett Collection)This should surprise absolutely no one, but there isn t always a clear correlation between Fresh Tomatometer scores and box office returns. Take, for example, Will Smith, who has over a dozen films that earned over 0 million domestically, but who also has only received two Fresh scores among his last 16 films (with an average Tomatometer score of 13%, at that). This year, two of Smith s Rotten films received sequels, including May s confirmation that the long-in-development threequel Bad Boys for Life (a sequel to Bad Boys II, Rotten at 22%) is scheduled for January 17, 2020. The year also started with the January news that Netflix is developing a sequel to their fantasy action movie Bright (Rotten at 25%) .JUNE: LUCASFILM HAS A BAD FEELING ABOUT THE STAR WARS STORY PREQUELS(Photo by Walt Disney Studios)Oh, how quickly things can change. On May 25th, the Top Story in The Weekly Ketchup was about Logan director James Mangold signing on with Lucasfilm for the prequel spinoff Boba Fett: A Star Wars Story. And then the box office numbers for Solo: A Star Wars Story continued to roll in ouch! and by June, we were running this story. That meant bad news not just for Boba Fett, but also previously discussed prequel spinoffs for characters like Obi-Wan and Yoda. Several months later, we can also now report that the prequel focus is shifting towards streaming, with Jon Favreau directing The Mandalorian for the upcoming Disney+ subscription service, which will be followed by a Rogue One spinoff series starring Diego Luna.JULY: DIRECTOR JAMES GUNN FIRED FROM GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3(Photo by Marvel Studios)In July, the Marvel Cinematic Universe went all topsy-turvy when Walt Disney Pictures announced that they had severed our business relationship with director James Gunn, who delivered the first two Guardians of the Galaxy movies and had been developing Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. The reason for Gunn s dismissal was the re-discovery of several joke tweets from 2008 to 2011. In response, Gunn said in a statement that, regardless of how much time has passed, I understand and accept the business decisions taken today. Meanwhile, Gunn s firing inspired a wide spectrum of responses, from this Collider editorial to Dave Bautista being NOT ok with it to Selma BLair saying Gunn is one of the good ones to this response calling for criminal prosecution. Eventually, in October, Marvel s Distinguished Competition at Warner Bros. snapped up James Gunn to work on their Suicide Squad sequel.AUGUST: HOLLYWOOD TRIPLES DOWN ON NOSTALGIA(Photo by 20th Century Fox Film Corp. courtesy Everett Collection)Until recently, it seemed like maybe Hollywood was going to ease off its obsession with remakes a little bit, but what we saw simply might have been a respite as the trends moved on from the 1980s to the 1990s, as three such projects were announced all in one week. First of all, there was a project that is not a remake at all, but instead a prequel to the 1993 kids baseball movie The Sandlot (still, no less nostalgic). That original film s writer and director, David Mickey Evans, made a deal with 20th Century Fox for a new movie that would delve deeper into the backstory of The Beast, the English mastiff that terrorized the original kids in 1962. The Sandlot prequel will actually be the fourth film in the franchise, as there were two direct-to-video sequels in 2005 and 2007. Paramount Players is also now developing a remake of the 1993 drama Indecent Proposal, about a young couple who agree to a arrangement in which the wife will spend one night with a wealthy man for million. The remake is being written by screenwriter Erin Cressida Wilson, who adapted 2016 s The Girl on the Train and is also working on Disney s live-action remake of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Finally, Sony Pictures is also developing a remake of the 1987 Bruce Willis/Kim Basinger romantic comedy Blind Date.SEPTEMBER: YIPPEE-KI-YAY, THE DIE HARD ORIGIN MOVIE MOVES FORWARD(Photo by 20th Century Fox)Although 2007 s Live Free or Die Hard was Certified Fresh at 82%, when A Good Day to Die Hard came out six years later, the franchise took a steep dive at a Rotten 14%. That fifth Die Hard movie was a box office disappointment as well, earning the lowest totals of the franchise (especially when you adjust for inflation, ouch). Even so, 20th Century Fox is developing a sixth Die Hard movie, which will be a 1970s-set origin story for John McClane. Up until September, the prequel retained Die Hard in the title, as Die Hard: Year One, but we now know that Fox has decided to go in a different direction, as the film is now known as simply McClane. It s not yet known which younger actor will be cast as the young John McClane.OCTOBER: LEBRON JAMES MIGHT REBOOT FRIDAY THE 13TH (Photo by Mary Cybulski/Universal Pictures)Following big box office for October s Halloween, another major slasher franchise also re-entered development for a reboot, although who might be producing it is arguably the bigger story. Basketball star LeBron James, who recently made the move from the Cleveland Cavaliers to the Los Angeles Lakers, is using his new address to increase his film activity, and apparently, that might now also include producing Friday the 13th movies. James posted this image of himself in 2013 wearing a hockey mask, though he is not expected to be taking on the role as the new Jason Voorhees himself. The negotiations come just a month after original Friday the 13th screenwriter Victor Miller won a lawsuit against producer Sean Cunningham, although the rights are still described as murky, which is why the LeBron James news requires a big might or may in its language.NOVEMBER: GARFIELD IS COMING BACK(Photo by 20th Century Fox Film Corp.)In 2004 and 2006, Bill Murray starred as the voice of the world s most famous comic strip cat in Garfield: The Movie (Rotten at 15%) and Garfield: A Tale of Two Kitties (Rotten at 11%). From one perspective, those low Tomatometer scores could mean that there s nowhere to go but up, but as with video game movies, it s probably more likely to mean that any future Garfield movies probably won t be well received either. Those films also weren t particularly successful financially either, with the first one only earning million domestically from a budget of million and the sequel barely making more than a third of that. Regardless, development is underway on a new animated adaptation of Jim Davis popular comic strip character. The challenging prospect of turning the Garfield ship around is being taken on by director Mark Dindal who is best known for Disney s The Emperor s New Groove (Certified Fresh at 85%) and Chicken Little (Rotten at 37%).DECEMBER: THE TOXIC AVENGER IS GETTING A BIG-BUDGET REBOOT(Photo by Troma Films)Although both 1984 s The Toxic Avenger and Citizen Toxie: The Toxic Avenger IV received Fresh Tomatometer scores of 70%, the second film has an absolutely Rotten 0% and the third film wasn t even reviewed enough to earn a score. The Toxic Avenger became such a cult fan favorite, though, that he became the company mascot of Troma Entertainment, the super low-budget production company behind such chestnuts as Blood Sucking Freaks, Sgt. Kabukiman NYPD, and Poultrygeist: Night of the Chicken Dead. Despite its gonzo origins, The Toxic Avenger is now being developed as a new big-budget superhero franchise by Legendary Entertainment, the company behind The Dark Knight, Watchmen, and Godzilla. In addition to the four feature length movies, The Toxic Avenger was also adapted as a stage musical production, a children’s cartoon TV series, and a Marvel comic.
