亚博app买球信誉靠谱采用百度引擎8(Baidu 9)(Photo by JSquared Photography/The CW)With its glitz, glamour, and can-do attitude, The CW’s Katy Keene may seem more like an echo of the network’s Gossip Girl than an extension of the emerging Riverdale universe. And that difference may cause fans of the mothership series – or its Netflix cousin, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina – to look at it with some pause. Some of those fears may be unfounded, as Katy Keene charts a new corner of the Archie Comics world on television. Join us as we examine some of the program’s unique details and why it fits in both The CW’s lineup and a place not too far from Betty (Lili Reinhart) and Jughead (Cole Sprouse). It s Got A Magical Tone(Photo by Barbara Nitke/The CW)From his earliest discussions about the program, executive producer Robert Aguirre-Sacasa promised it would have a magical tone. In much the same way Riverdale’s atmosphere stems from film noir and the series occasionally flirts with horror tropes, Katy Keene’s sense of magic seems to come from romantic comedies in which the world itself is, on the whole, a good place. The city Katy (Lucy Hale) walks through is brighter, its denizens smile widely, and a song could break out at any moment. And although the series would seem to set up romantic travails for its four principal characters and each has someone in their lives their truest romance is with the city itself and the sense that anything can happen there. Compared to the way the Riverdale gang seem to loathe their hometown and the soul of Greendale seems a secondary concern for the Sabrina characters, the love of place is a refreshing change – but it might drive those less enamored with New York a little crazy. It s Set Sometime In Rivedale s Future(Photo by Barbara Nitke/The CW)Though the program avoids specifics in its early episodes, the show takes place sometime in Riverdale’s future. Some reports indicated a five year gap exists between them, but we saw no indication of that. Early on, Josie McCoy (Ashleigh Murray) makes references to the time spent between leaving town with her father (as seen last year on Riverdale), but avoids elaborating too much on where she’s been. Additionally, Katy herself is a contemporary of Veronica Lodge (Camilla Mendes) – who availed herself of Katy’s costume-making skills on Riverdale earlier this season – but tells the viewers in the first episode she has been working at Lacy’s Department Store for three years. Perhaps her guest appearance on the February 5th episode of Riverdale will clear up the question of time. If Katy is already working at Lacy s when Veronica heads to New York for some catching-up and shopping, then we know the two shows are within three years of each other. At the same time, the lack of a precise time gap offers both shows some flexibility in terms of future crossovers or characters making long-term migrations from one series to the other. It also means events on Katy Keene are less likely to conflict with Riverdale. Luckily for both shows, Sabrina takes place in an alternate reality and keeps its Devil far from The CW.Katy Is Your Narrator(Photo by Barbara Nitke/The CW)Like Jughead before her, Katy narrates the goings-on of the story. Although, from the episodes we’ve seen so far, she is only privy to her own thoughts and her own life. But also like Mr. Jones, she seems to have some omniscience or future knowledge about her life and may be speaking from some future point in time.Created by Bill Woggon and first debuting in 1945’s Wilbur Comics #5, Katy was a popular character in the Archie stable for roughly 15 years. She appeared in various Archie Comics titles and, eventually, her own self-titled comic, in which the twenty-something character aspired to become a model, actor, and singer. Reader engagement was high, as the company encouraged fans to submit their own dress ideas for Katy to wear. But as the character’s popularity declined in the early 1960s, along with other female-focused comic book genres, she is not as well known as Archie, Sabrina, or Josie. After a short-lived revival in the 1980s (spearheaded by fans of her 1950s exploits), she disappeared once again into Archie trivia. The television series re-imagines her as a would-be fashion designer who has a major talent as a personal shopper at Lacy’s. Seemingly mentored by department head Gloria Grandbilt (Katherine LaNasa) – who reminds us of Sabrina’s Aunt Zelda (Miranda Otto) a great deal – Katy appears to be caught between these two aspects of her chosen industry, much as her comic book counterpart vacillated between three facets of the entertainment industry. At times, she has a Veronica Lodge energy to her, so it’s not a huge surprise she’s the de facto leader of her group of friends, but we wonder how she and V really got along all those years ago.The Poppy Dialogue Remains(Photo by Peter Kramer/The CW)Like Riverdale and Sabrina, the fast, poppy dialogue remains a fixture, but with its references to Broadway, legendary recording studios, and fashion labels, viewers more aligned with the other shows’ reliance on film history and the macabre  may find themselves missing some of the jokes. Nevertheless, Aguirre-Sacasa’s constant voice means fans of Riverdale and Sabrina will just pick up new knowledge bases as the series progresses. It s Also A Josie And The Pussycats Show(Photo by Barbara Nitke/The CW)While Valerie and Melody are nowhere to be seen so far – and have been missing from Josie’s life since sophomore year of high school – Katy Keene features a lot of ideas from the Josie comic book and animated series. Pepper Smith, her original best friend in the comics, is one of Katy Keene’s four principal characters. Played by Julia Chan, she’s been re-imagined as a new media hustler with something of a shady past. Alexandra Cabot (Camille Hyde), complete with a white stripe in her hair, emerges as Josie’s first real antagonist on the series. Alexander Cabot (Lucien Laviscount) appears as a possible romantic interest for Ms. McCoy with a more idealistic vision for a record company than his comic book counterpart s scheming for success and Josie’s affections. Nevertheless, Josie’s encounters with the Cabot siblings ring familiar from the comics, and Alexander s interest in making Josie a star may lead to a reformed Pussycats at least, we hope it does. Other Josie supporting characters like Albert and Sock are still missing, but maybe they’ll pop up at some pint. Long time Josie love interest Alan M. Mayberry is reportedly set to appear on the show (in the form of actor James Maslow), so it is possible the entire Jose and the Pussycats cast will populate Katy Keene. But considering the traditional Katy Keene cast is pretty much limited to Gloria Grandbilt, her boyfriend K.O. Kelly (played on the show by Zane Holtz) and Katy’s sister (who has seemingly been erased for the TV show), the Josie group is a worthwhile set of characters to import into Katy’s orbit. Well, that’s presuming she’ll be an active participant in Josie s story.Riverdale-Style Musical Numbers Abound(Photo by Barbara Nitke/The CW)Riverdale likes its music. Whether it be Kevin Keller’s (Casey Cott) annual school production or the entertainment Veronica programs at La Bonne Nuit, the show has relied on both reality-breaking musical numbers and more diagetic performances designed to showcase the chops of its cast. But even with the excuse of the speakeasy and Kevin’s love of musical theater, Riverdale is somewhat limited in the amount of singing it can credibly feature; keeping such scenes down to one every few episodes.Katy Keene takes it to a whole new level, with several musical interludes per episode. Some may just feature a single person playing piano and singing, while others take to the stage at Molly’s Crisis – the favorite spot of Katy’s circle – but it’s a definite uptick from the amount of singing one might find on Riverdale. This is by design, of course. Initial descriptions of the series noted its intention to be a “musical dramedy.” And while it may not feature as much choreography as an episode of Glee or even the level of production one might see at La Bonne Nuit, Katy Keene is very much about its cast singing. There Are Theatrical Struggles(Photo by David Giesbrecht/The CW)Of course, it can’t all be magical nights filled with song on Katy Keene. Drama still must occur. And in lieu of murder or witchcraft, Katy Keene’s dramatic hooks come from the characters trying to make it while maintaining their romantic notions about life. And though the show is trying to play this material in a more whimsical way – particularly with Katy’s story the struggles are there.Jorge Lopez (Jonny Beauchamp), in particular, has it tough as the program’s only character trying to make it on the Big White Way. Like so many before him, he wants to be a dancer in Broadway shows, but his seemingly fluid gender presentation and his drag act as “Ginger Lopez” may cause him any number of difficulties, to say nothing of the way the theater eats hopefuls of all stripes.Meanwhile, Pepper’s real story has yet to reveal itself. Early press materials suggested she has a secret business plan, but if it’s the one she expressed in the episodes we saw, it will lead her into some rough times in the very near future perhaps even the greatest struggle of her life. But the presence of these struggles will, hopefully, underscore the sense of magic Katy Keene wants to cultivate about New York and establishing oneself in their 20s. Sure, the show may only be paying lip service to things like rent or the rigors of finding a career in the entertainment field, but it is trying to be a hopeful show. At the same time, we wouldn’t be surprised if it makes some sort of pivot into darker material. It is a Riverdale adjacent show, after all.Katy Keene Season 1 premieres on Thursday, February 6 on The CW.

The latest episode of Couch Tomatoes will be available November 20. Ever since the announcement of Jon Favreau s Disney+ series The Mandalorian, Star Wars fans have been champing at the bit for tough, gritty, and action-packed space western – and when the series debuted this month, it certainly delivered that. But it also delivered something completely unexpected: Cuteness overload and one of the most intriguing odd couples to ever hit streaming or TV.Stop reading right about now if you haven t seen the first two episodes of The Mandolorian. That big dose of the unexpected arrived at the end of episode 1, and continued into episode 2, with the revelation that the Mandalorian s (Pedro Pascal) mysterious target was a little green infant creature that appears to be the same species as Yoda. Baby Yoda, as the Internet has dubbed him, has not only charmed the world since he showed up, but kicked off some serious theorizing about the creature s origins and what it could mean for the future of the Star Wars franchise. Our guide to the Best Shows on Disney+In this special edition of Couch Tomatoes, host Naz Perez is joined by Star Wars expert Ken Napzok, Collider s Perri Nemiroff and Fandango s Nikki Novak to talk everything The Mandalorian. Is Baby Yoda a new character, Yoda himself, or some sort of clone? Could that actually be Boba under the Mando s armor? Does live-action Star Wars work even better on the small screen? And could this new series tie into The Rise of Skywalker? With each episode of Couch Tomatoes, we dig into a major series or event and provide Fresh picks of great shows to help you cut through the clutter and only binge the best. The Mandalorian is available on Disney+. Like this? This week s Ketchup brings you more headlines from the world of film development news, covering such titles as Blue Beetle, The Running Man, and Spider-Man: No Way Home. This WEEK S TOP STORYACCLAIMED BLACK PANTHER WRITER TA-NEHISI COATES TO REBOOT SUPERMAN(Photo by Clay Enos/©Warner Bros. Pictures)This week was always going to be a big one for DC Comics, particularly Superman, because Tuesday night was when The CW debuted their new series Superman Lois, which is currently rated Fresh at 85%, and HBO Max announced that Zack Snyder s Justice League, which prominently features the character, will debut online on March 18, 2021. The biggest Superman reveal of the week, however, is that J.J. Abrams will produce a Superman reboot to be adapted by award-winning novelist and Black Panther comic book writer Ta-Nehisi Coates. Speaking about his new assignment, Coates remarked, I look forward to meaningfully adding to the legacy of America s most iconic mythic hero. As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, this reboot is being set up as a Black Superman story that has roots in previous efforts, including one with Michael B. Jordan in 2019. No director has been announced yet, and the search for the new Kal-El has not yet begun (so someone like Jordan could still be in the running). In related news, Rachel Zegler, who will play Maria in Steven Spielberg s upcoming remake of West Side Story, has joined the cast of the DC Comics sequel Shazam: Fury of the Gods (6/2/2023) in a secret role.Other Top Headlines1. EDGAR WRIGHT TO REMAKE STEPHEN KING S THE RUNNING MAN(Photo by ©TriStar Pictures courtesy Everett Collection)Whether they were there for it as it happened (like this writer) or they discovered the era later, fans of 1980s movies likely see the decade as a bounty of riches. Even the movies that weren t your Ghostbusters, your Back to the Futures, or your Goonies can still be someone s beloved gems. Consider, for example, the 1987 Arnold Schwarzenegger science fiction film The Running Man (Fresh at 64%), based on a novel written by Stephen King (under his pseudonym Richard Bachman). It s not exactly a direct adaptation of the book (mostly because the main character is supposed to be an everyman, and there s no world where 1980s Arnold Schwarzenegger would be considered an everyman ), but it has a legion of fans. Now, it sounds like director Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz) agrees that The Running Man deserves another go, because he is attached to do exactly that with an adaptation for Paramount Pictures that is expected to be more faithful to the source material. No cast has been announced yet. The Running Man was set in the year 2025, so pretty soon, it ll be time to start running! 2. DC SIGNS CHARM CITY KINGS DIRECTOR FOR ITS BLUE BEETLE MOVIE (Photo by DC Comics)Over the past several years, both Warner Bros./DC Comics and their competition at Marvel Studios have released movies that broke new ground in the interests of wider representation, both in the audience and on screen. For example, later this year, Marvel will be releasing Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, which aims to do for an Asian cast what Black Panther (Certified Fresh at 96%) did for a mostly Black cast. This week, WB/DC made a similar move towards a film with a Latino lead superhero with Blue Beetle, based on the second Blue Beetle, whose alter ego is Mexican American teenager Jaime Reyes. Warner Bros. has hired director Angel Manuel Soto (Charm City Kings, Certified Fresh at 81%) to develop the Blue Beetle movie with screenwriter Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer (Miss Bala). Reyes Blue Beetle will be DC s first Latino superhero to headline a film.3. CHRISTIAN BALE TO STAR IN EDGAR ALLEN POE MYSTERY THE PALE BLUE EYE(Photo by Jaap Buitendijk/©Paramount)Christian Bale is now attached to reunite for a third film with director Scott Cooper after previously working with him on Out of the Furnace (Rotten at 54%) and Hostiles (Fresh at 71%). The film will be The Pale Blue Eye, based on the novel by Louis Bayard about a series of murders that take place at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, with Bale playing a veteran detective investigating the murders, aided by a detail-oriented young cadet who will later become a world famous author, Edgar Allan Poe. Scott Cooper s latest film, the horror drama Antlers (10/29/2021) is scheduled to be released on October 29, 2021 after being delayed in 2020 by the COVID-19 pandemic.4. RYAN GOSLING WILL BE THE ACTOR(Photo by Elizabeth Goodenough/Everett Collection)Crime novelist Donald E. Westlake died in 2008, leaving behind a film legacy which includes Point Blank (Fresh at 92%), The Stepfather (Fresh at 88%), and The Grifters (Certified Fresh at 91%). Director Duke Johnson, who made his feature film debut alongside Charlie Kaufman with the intense animated drama Anomalisa (Certified Fresh at 92%), is now attached to direct The Actor, based on Donald E. Westlake s novel Memory. Ryan Gosling is also now attached to star in the film as the title character, a New York City actor in the 1950s who is beaten and left for dead in a small town in Ohio. Before Gosling signed on, Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Pietro from Avengers: Age of Ultron) was also considering joining the project.5. JULIA ROBERTS AND GEORGE CLOONEY TO REUNITE FOR 4TH FILM (Photo by ©Warner Bros.)Julia Roberts did not return for Ocean s Thirteen (Fresh at 69%) after co-starring in the first two films, but she and George Clooney did reunite for a third film together in 2016, namely Jodie Foster s Money Monster (Rotten at 58%). We can now report that Roberts and Clooney are now attached to star in a fourth film together, which will be a romantic comedy for Universal Pictures and Working Title called Ticket to Paradise. Ol Parker (The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel) will direct the comedy about a divorced couple who journey to Bali to stop their daughter from getting hitched to stop their daughter from making the same mistake they think they made 25 years ago. The screenplay is being written by Ted Melfi (St. Vincent; cowriter of Hidden Figures).6. TITLE OF NEXT SPIDER-MAN REVEALED(Photo by Sony Pictures Entertainment)We should start this particular story by noting that April 1st was not in this week (and also that April Fool s Day movie joke posts sort of became Internet uncool about ten years ago, anyway). Having said that, it s not like Hollywood studios make a habit of trolling their fans (though they could probably get away with it), so Sony Pictures probably gets a pass this week for their little bit of fun. See, what happened was that the three young stars of the next Spider-Man movie (12/17/2021) each posted a still from the film, along with what they claimed was the movie s title. Tom Holland s title was Spider-Man: Phone Home (as in the catchphrase from this movie), Jacob Batalon s title was Spider-Man: Home Wrecker, and Zendaya s title was Spider-Man: Home Slice. Except, of course, that those were all fake and the title will actually be Spider-Man: No Way Home, which suggests a story that follows the cliffhanger at the end of Spider-Man: Far From Home. As for his future as Spider-Man, Holland also confirmed this week that Spider-Man: No Way Home is the last film for his (current) Marvel Studios contract, but if they want me back, I ll be there in a heartbeat. 7. NEILL BLOMKAMP DEVELOPING DISTRICT 9 SEQUEL DISTRICT 10(Photo by ©Sony Pictures Entertainment)South African genre director Neill Blomkamp experience a hot streak of popularity following his 2009 aliens living among us sci-fi action film District 9 (Certified Fresh at 90%), including  a period when he almost got to make one of the Alien movies. Six years after his third film, Chappie (Rotten at 32%), Blomkamp now appears to be returning to the setting of District 9 (or, at least, one district over from it) with the sequel District 10, which Blomkamp will direct and is currently co-writing. Blomkamp s writing partners on District 10 are Sharlto Copley (his District 9 star) and Terry Tatchell. Copley isn t yet confirmed to be starring in District 10, but considering where his character landed at the end of District 9, it s unclear how large a part he could have even if he did return.8. FLORENCE PUGH AND MORGAN FREEMAN TO STAR IN ZACH BRAFF S NEXT (Photo by A24)Zach Braff may always be best known for his lead role on the medical comedy TV series Scrubs, but he s also developed a career as a director, starting in 2004 with Garden State (Certified Fresh at 86%) and most recently including the 2017 remake of Going in Style (Rotten at 47%). For his next film, Braff has attracted two impressive stars in both Florence Pugh (Midsommar, Black Widow) and Morgan Freeman (one of Braff s Going in Style stars). Pugh will star in A Good Person, which Zach Braff is directing and writing, as a woman whose life falls apart after a fatal accident who forms an unlikely relationship with the older man (Morgan Freeman) who would have been her father-in-law. Pugh will also soon star in Olivia Wilde s second film as director, Don t Worry, Darling.9. RESIDENT EVIL TEAM TACKLING GEORGE R.R. MARTIN NEXT (Photo by Rafy/©Screen Gems courtesy Everett Collection)Fantasy and science fiction author George R.R. Martin is very much an old school writer whose legacy has now arguably been claimed by a series that is, relatively speaking, just a teensy-tiny percentage of everything he s written. Specifically, we re talking about his (yet unfinished) A Song of Ice and Fire series, which was adapted for HBO as Game of Thrones (Fresh at 89%) and spawned the upcoming prequel series House of the Dragon. One of the many other things Martin has written is the short story In the Lost Lands, a sword-and-sorcery fantasy, which is now going to be adapted by director Paul W.S. Anderson (the Resident Evil franchise) with his wife (and Resident Evil star) Milla Jovovich attached. Jovovich will star as a dangerous and feared sorceress who is hired by a desperate queen who teams up with a drifter played by Dave Bautista. Paul W.S. Anderson and Milla Jovovich also recently teamed up on another video game adaptation, Monster Hunter (Rotten at 46%), which opened back in December. On an Apple device? LADY BIRD DIRECTOR GRETA GERWIG TAPPED FOR BARBIE MOVIE(Photo by Jason Smith/Everett Collection)The toy company Mattel has been attempting to get a live action Barbie movie going for a few years now, including an effort at Sony that almost featured first Amy Schumer, and then Anne Hathaway. The Barbie movie eventually moved to Warner Bros. late last year, at which point their Harley Quinn actress Margot Robbie also started talks to star in the film. At first, Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins had also been in talks to helm Barbie, but this week, Warner Bros. instead hired Greta Gerwig (Lady Bird, Certified Fresh at 99%), who will also adapt the screenplay with Lady Bird co-writer Noah Baumbach. The premise isn t known yet, but it s expected that it will no longer be anything like the story it would have been with Schumer or Hathaway. Warner Bros. had previously scheduled Barbie for May 8, 2020, but this news may mean it will be delayed.3. EMMA STONE AND BRAD PITT MAY CO-STAR IN DAMIEN CHAZELLE S BABYLON(Photo by Jef Hernandez, Gregorio Binuya/Everett Collection)We re now less than two weeks from the release of Quentin Tarantino s ninth film as director, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, which is his tribute to the Los Angeles of the 1960s. Tarantino is not the only director revisiting the Hollywood of the past, though, as La La Land director Damien Chazelle is preparing for his next film, Babylon, which will be set in the silent era of the 1920s. Emma Stone is now in talks to reunite with Chazelle on Babylon, which might start filming before her starring role in Disney s 101 Dalmatians prequel Cruella (12/23/2020). In a move that would really tie Babylon to Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Brad Pitt is also reportedly circling the film. Babylon will reportedly be an R-rated movie in the three hour range with a budget of between million and 0 million, with Lionsgate and Paramount among the studios vying to distribute.4. POP SINGER HARRY STYLES MAY JOIN DISNEY S THE LITTLE MERMAID AS PRINCE ERIC (Photo by Kristin Callahan/Everett Collection)In just a few weeks, we ve gone from not knowing when Walt Disney Pictures might ever remake The Little Mermaid to having almost every major role cast (pretty much everyone but King Triton and Sebastian the singing crab). All in the same week, actually, Disney started negotiating with Melissa McCarthy (as the octopus sea witch Ursula), Awkwafina (as Scuttle the seagull), Room star Jacob Tremblay (as Flounder the fish), and Halle Bailey as the title character of Ariel. We can also now report that Disney is in early talks with One Direction pop singer Harry Styles to star as the film s romantic male lead, Prince Eric. The live action remake of The Little Mermaid will be directed by Rob Marshall (Chicago, Mary Poppins Returns).5. BAZ LUHRMANN FINDS HIS ELVIS(Photo by Kristin Callahan/Everett Collection)Following the staggering success of Bohemian Rhapsody and the pretty good numbers for Elton John s Rocketman, the musical biopic has come back in a big way. There are several similar projects now in the works, including biopics for Boy George and Aretha Franklin (with Jennifer Hudson attached), and a Mamma Mia! style jukebox musical featuring the music of Prince. Right up there with The Beatles, one of the biggest stars never to receive a big budget Hollywood biopic is the King of Rock and Roll, Elvis Presley, but that s exactly what Moulin Rouge director Baz Luhrmann is getting ready to work on next. In the same week as the Little Mermaid casting news earlier this month, we also learned about the various contenders to play Elvis (including Ansel Elgort, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Miles Teller, and One Direction s Harry Styles, who will apparently co-star in The Little Mermaid instead.) Baz Luhrmann s Elvis will be Austin Butler of MTV s The Shannara Chronicles, with Tom Hanks already attached to co-star as Colonel Tom Parker.6. GIRLS TRIP DIRECTOR TAKING OVER SPACE JAM 2(Photo by Michael Gibson/©Universal Pictures)Until this week, Space Jam 2 was to have marked the big budget studio debut of director Terence Nance, whose first film was the 2013 independent drama An Oversimplification of Her Beauty. Citing differing visions, Warner Bros. and producer and star LeBron James have now hired director Malcolm D. Lee to direct Space Jam 2. Although his most recent film, Night School, received a Rotten Tomatometer score at 27%, Lee s two prior films both received Certified Fresh scores: Barbershop: The Next Cut at 90% and Girls Trip at 91%. We don t yet know which NBA stars will be joining LeBron yet, but Don Cheadle signed on last week. Warner Bros. has scheduled Space Jam 2 for July 16, 2021, which is the week after Indiana Jones 5, and the week before Mission: Impossible 7.7. FIRST TEASER TRAILER REVEALS WHAT THE HUNT IS ABOUT (SPOILER: IT S ABOUT A HUNT) (Photo by Universal Pictures)There was once a time when people often didn t know that a movie even existed, much less what the film was about, before the first trailer came out. These days, however, mainstream cinema is dominated by sequels, remakes, and adaptations of comics and video games, the news of which break months or years ahead of time (for example: this column). In that climate, then, it s rather refreshing when we have a movie like The Hunt (9/27/2019), which was just described as a political thriller until the teaser trailer was released this week. As it turns out, the title was quite literal, as the movie now appears to be nearly a remake of the classic story and film, The Most Dangerous Game, as twelve strangers find themselves being hunted by the uber-wealthy on a private estate.Rotten Idea2. ARCADE CLASSIC SPACE INVADERS GETTING AN ADAPTATION(Photo by Producers Distribution Agency/Courtesy Everett Collection)This year s Pokémon Detective Pikachu made Tomatometer history with the first Fresh rating (at 67%) ever for a mainstream video game movie. While it s great that this long-standing Rotten record was broken, it s only a mere step in the right direction for the genre;  video game movies still trend towards Rotten, even though we continue to hope that will change someday. One of the oldest video game franchises is Space Invaders, which celebrated its 40th anniversary last year in 2018, Warner Bros. has been developing a Space Invaders movie for several years now. This week, the Space Invaders movie moved forward with the hiring of screenwriter Greg Russo, who is also working on another video game movie, the Mortal Kombat reboot (3/5/2021). Good luck, Greg!1. STRANGER THINGS BILLY REVEALS POWER RANGERS TO BE REBOOTED YET AGAIN (Photo by © Lionsgate)Ostensibly, one of the reasons a movie might cast several young up-and-comers is that if there are ever sequels, the franchise might benefit from getting in early on the careers of promising young stars. For example, just two years after the 2017 Power Rangers reboot, its cast seems to be in a pretty great place, as the Pink Ranger was played by Naomi Scott (Jasmine from Aladdin), and the Red Ranger was played by Dacre Montgomery (Billy from Stranger Things). (And that s without mentioning Elizabeth Banks as Rita Repulsa, or Barry star Bill Hader as the voice of Alpha 5.) So, it was a crazy headscratcher this week when Dacre Montgomery revealed that Power Rangers is being rebooted once again, with another completely new cast. Although it is true that the 2017 reboot received a Rotten score at 50%, that was actually a step up from the older films, like the first movie in 1995, which was Rotten at 37%.Like this? Beasts of the Southern Wild debuted at Sundance in 2012, cementing Benh Zeitlin as a uniquely imaginative filmmaker. The movie blew audiences away and wound up with four Oscar nominations, including one for Best Picture. Fans couldn’t wait to see what this new auteur would deliver next. Well, Zeitlin took eight years to finish his sophomore feature, the Peter Pan-inspired Wendy, and it just premiered at Sundance to mixed reviews. If you love Beasts, though, there’s a good chance that you’ll want to see this movie, too. Here’s what critics are saying about Wendy:Is Zeitlin s follow-up worth the wait? That magnificent eye is still there… Zeitlin is an auteur just as we thought he was and he’s going to continue to challenge his audience.  Gregory Ellwood, The PlaylistWith Wendy, Zeitlin aims for the stars, often forgetting what direction to fly in… Most disappointing.  Ian Thomas Malone, Ian Thomas MaloneWhat felt so revolutionary in 2012 is no less visionary today but packs a disappointing sense of familiarity this time around.  Peter Debruge, VarietyThere’s a reason that films that take this many years to get to screens often come up short… Wendy is a cautionary tale about what causes sophomore slumps.  Brian Tallerico, RogerEbert.comWill fans of Beasts of the Southern Wild enjoy it?Zeitlin’s wondrous Pan riff feels like such a natural continuation of the Beasts experience that it practically unfolds in the same immersive universe. Eric Kohn, IndieWireWendy bears some of the same elements — rambunctious kids, magical realism, unknown actors, climate awareness — [but] it feels like an even stronger picture thanks to its filmmaker’s growing ambition. Matt Goldberg, ColliderMaybe some people will think Zeitlin is revisiting the style and themes of Beasts a little too closely, but that movie was thrilling and so is this one. Steve Pond, The WrapIt seems hard to imagine anyone who didn’t respond to Beasts somehow thinking this one works, and even fans of that film may be startled at the repetition. Brian Tallerico, RogerEbert.com(Photo by Fox Searchlight Pictures)What about fans of Peter Pan?Wendy both honors its inspiration and creates something original. Steve Pond, The WrapAs with David Lowery’s transportive live-action remake Pete’s Dragon, Zeitlin has taken an overwrought children’s story and given it a fresh identity without toppling the original’s core ideas. Eric Kohn, IndieWireZeitlin’s adaptation overflows with imagination as it manages to deconstruct the myth while never losing its timeless energy… The result is constantly enchanting and beguiling. Matt Goldberg, ColliderIt’s thrilling to discover how Wendy reinvents the particulars of a fairy story audiences know so well, and which Disney has so strongly codified for nearly everyone alive today — although the omission of Tinker Bell and the other fairies will likely be a let-down. Peter Debruge, VarietyThere are times when you can feel the film straining to deal with aspects of the original story in a so-called organic way. Todd McCarthy, Hollywood ReporterWill children enjoy it?The movie’s a bit too intense, and more than a little too arty, to suit young audiences. Peter Debruge, VarietyKids will be bored by this movie. Brian Tallerico, RogerEbert.comThe lack of any real narrative structure — and the few odd surges of menace, one of which blooms into a moment of shocking physical violence — make it hard to imagine that a younger audience will follow. Leah Greenblatt, Entertainment WeeklyMileage will vary when it comes to Zeitlin’s Terrence Malick for kids aesthetic, which turns on awe-inspiring cues at every turn, and sometimes threatens to turn into a parody of that very thing. Eric Kohn, IndieWireHow does it look?Wendy is an absolutely beautiful film. Largely filmed in the Caribbean, the cinematography provides visual overload time and time again. Ian Thomas Malone, Ian Thomas MaloneThe new movie uses the expansive landscapes of the Caribbean to imbue the proceedings with a spiritual tranquility that lingers in every shot. Eric Kohn, IndieWireEvery frame of the film is excitingly alive and freshly conceived, making it something very much worth seeing on the big screen. Brian Tallerico, RogerEbert.com[Devin France] resonates with a richness that carries you through the story and often when Zeitlin needs it the most. Out of all the young (and old) actors she makes you believe in this scenario.
