And while that may leave some hoping for certain cameos disappointed, the lingering questions will continue to fuel our speculation about the overall Phase 4 story for sometime. WandaVision may have seen its series finale, but the Marvel Cinematic Universe continues. Let s take a look at the program s contributions to the MCU s ongoing tale.Spoiler Alert: This article reveals details from WandaVision episode 9 “The Series Finale.” Stop here if you have not watched the episode. The Scarlet Witch Was Foretold in The Darkhold — or Was The Darkhold Waiting for a Victim?(Photo by Suzanne Tenner/Marvel Studios)Suggesting the book in Agatha s (Kathryn Hahn) basement was The Darkhold may be our only correct guess during the series, but we ll take it. The book is an immensely powerful tome, as we previously discussed, and a key object for any of Marvel s magic users to obtain. But Agatha added an interesting wrinkle by telling Wanda (Elizabeth Olsen) the Scarlet Witch has a whole page devoted to her. It declares she will end the world. The series seems to agree with The Darkhold as Wanda s powers grew exponentially this week and looked quite destructive. Then there s Wanda s style as the Scarlet Witch. While we re sure fans are happy to finally see her with a costume inspired by the late, great Jack Kirby — seriously, we love Kirby s penchant for thrilling headgear — it looks far more like a villain s get-up than that of an Avenger. But, perhaps, that is the point. If Wanda s abilities are as dangerous as The Darkhold suggests, then Wanda still has quite a struggle ahead of her to combat the more impulsive and destructive aspects of her soul. Look at the way she initially strangled the Westview residents when they confronted her. That was instinct. And though Wanda released them and removed the Hex, the final shot of her reading The Darkhold sure feels like a clear indication that she will be Doctor Strange s (Benedict Cumberbatch) opponent in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Or, at least, he ll have to battle the Scarlet Witch even as Wanda fights against her from inside.Maybe we ll even get a recreation of The Patty Duke Show during the film. Now that The Darkhold is an artifact in the MCU, it still leaves us wondering about Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and its role in that series. Considering that series firmly established the book corrupts all who read it, will it be the true source of the Scarlet Witch s desire to end all things? Was It Ralph All Along?(Photo by Marvel Studios - episode 105)Though WandaVision s plot, and Wanda s powerset, always seemed like a great opportunity to introduce the Mutants into the MCU — Wanda s ties to the X-Men are almost as strong as her association with the Avengers — the hoped for moment was dispelled once Monica (Teyonah Parris) looked at a Water and Power statement addressed to one Ralph Boehner (Evan Peters) and one of his headshots. The fake Pietro was an actor all along! He was also Agnes s never-seen husband Ralph. Honestly, it s a nice tying of the bow as any other explanation for the guy (short of another reality s Pietro Maximoff) would require a lot of screentime. But, of course, it means no X-Men related revelations occurred in the series as a whole. And in the last month, speculation about certain cameos ran rampant. We participated, of course, and until we saw Wanda s father, Olek (Daniyar), last week we started to wonder if, perhaps, Ian McKellan would appear as Magneto at the last second just for Wanda to ask Papa? as the screen turned to black.Such a scene is still possible in some other project, of course.Unfortunately, much of the cameo game turned out to be a joke on the part of Paul Bettany, who admitted earlier this week that he was referring to himself as The Vision (more on that in moment) and not some truly earth-shattering special appearance.(Photo by Marvel Studios)Which leads to a question: Is WandaVision lesser for not having that shocking cameo? We ve striven to let the show s text guide us in our ponderings — even when it led us away from the Agatha Harkness fan theory. And while we always suggested Wanda s powers could give us the X-Men — and used the Kick-Ass joke as evidence — we re not exactly sad they didn t appear. The one thing we ve definitely held onto was Wanda s grief as the reason for the Westview Anomaly. And though the show ended on a more melancholy note than we expected, we re satisfied with the resolution to the mystery presented in the first three episodes. Those expecting Mephisto may not be so satisfied. But hope for the Devil springs eternal and Billy (Julian Hilliard) and Tommy (Jett Klyne) shouts in the last moments of the end-credit stinger should fuel the further possibility of his eventual arrival. With The Darkhold, the Dark Dimension, and a Mutliverse of madness in play, he is — like Thanos — inevitable. But he may, ultimately, have nothing to do with the twins continued existence.Vision vs. The Vision: Which Is Which?(Photo by Marvel Studios)As in the comics, the use of the definite article in regard to Vision (Bettany) is inconsistent. To be sure, he is often addressed as The Vision on comic book covers and in stories, but characters just as often drop the as he becomes more than a title — an interchangeability he shares with the Batman, oddly enough. But in the program s final cast list, it credits Bettany as both both Vision and The Vision, using that grammatical option as a way to differentiate the Vis we grew to love over the course of the series and the reanimated corpse of the original synthezoid. And we re here for it because it also speaks to the underlying conflict in their battle: the authenticity of Visions.Indeed, after their thrilling fight, they have an equally thrilling conversation about who is The Vision really is — leading to, we suspect, the proper resurrection of the true Vision. The Vision s mention of having been J.A.R.V.I.S., the AI in Tony Stark s early Iron Man suits, seems to indicate his memories, self-awareness, and autonomy are again intact. But the fact their argument ends with them both truly being Vision and not The Vision (or is that vice versa?) also indicates The Vision will need to continue soul-searching before he can obtain his true colors.Or, perhaps, that piece of the Mind Stone residing in Wanda will someday lead to The Vision becoming whole. In the meantime, we definitely love the elegant wordplay in differentiating Vision from The Vision. It s definitely better than our pitch from last week: New Vision and Vision s Corpse. All that said, we love for both versions of the character to merge some day. Well, presuming Vis didn t download his memories into The Vision already. Will Monica Rambeau Become Director of S.W.O.R.D. or Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.?(Photo by Suzanne Tenner/Marvel Studios - episode 105)While it may have been the briefest resolution in the series, we were glad to see Dr. Darcy Lewis (Kat Dennings) trap S.W.O.R.D. director Hayward (Josh Stamberg) so he could be taken into FBI custody. Although, we admit it would ve been nice to see him get a more just dessert — a la Agatha becoming Agnes again.Nevertheless, it puts Monica in a prime position to become director of S.W.O.R.D. But considering all that she s learned about the organization in the last week, would she want the job? The fact she s still wearing a S.W.O.R.D. shirt is a visual clue that it is indeed possible and, clearly, she could do good work there. But there is another tempting offer on the table.(Photo by Marvel Studios - Captain Marvel)In what has to be our first glimpse of Secret Invasion, a Skrull operative spirits Monica away from the scene of Hayward s crime to tell her an old friend of her mother wants to talk. In space. Now, there are two people who could be Maria Rambeau s old friend: Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) and Nicholas J. Fury (Samuel L. Jackson). In terms of Marvel Studios production chronology, we ll next see Monica in the Captain Marvel sequel, but we re going to assume Fury has invited Monica to the orbital staging platform glimpsed at the end of Spider-Man: Far From Home. Which, of course, only leads to more questions about Fury. For one thing: How long has that platform been there? Considering he was erased during the Blip, he could not have put this thing together in just a few weeks. That suggests it s been there for a while and, perhaps, what he was working on before he turned to dust in 2019. But the Skrull operative leads to a new possibility — is the outpost even his? Perhaps the Skrulls put it there as part of their decades-long secret invasion.Or, possibly, the platform is a next generation S.H.I.E.L.D. helicarrier capable of trans-atmospheric travel. Although Fury seemingly washed his hands of the agency at the end of Captain America: The Winter Solider — or left it in Agent Coulson s (Clark Gregg) capable hands if you accept Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. as canon — we doubt he d truly let it wither away no matter how disgraced Hydra left it or how many of its secrets Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson) exposed. If that is the case, it leaves Monica with an intriguing choice: lead S.W.O.R.D or join S.H.I.E.L.D. Granted, we re presuming a lot about both organizations — like Fury having no stake in S.W.O.R.D. — and Monica s interest in them. One thing is clear though from what we know of her so far: an invitation into space is something she cannot refuse. And while her powers are still mysterious — is she a being of pure light now? — we have no doubt the next time we see her, it will be out among the stars. What s Next? Will Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness Provide Answers?(Photo by Marvel Studios)The 20th century television sitcoms Wanda loved and emulated within the Hex took great pains to restore the status quo at the end of any given episode. On Bewtiched, Sam s magic remained hidden and Darren stayed employed. The Bradys always found family unity and their housekeeper, Alice, always found the right quip. But WandaVision eschews that tendency — and, perhaps, Wanda s greatest wish — for such tidy resolutions.Although we now know Agatha s main objective was to steal Wanda s powers because she was undeserving, she is now imprisoned as nosey neighbor Agnes. It is unclear if she will continue to live in Westview with poor Ralph or in some sort of stasis near Wanda s Sokovian cabin. And though it feels like a fitting punishment, is it really Wanda s to dole out? She evaded any accounting for her own transgressions, after all. And while she did apologize to Monica, it feels incomplete without one of the townspeople offering some sort of absolution. Then consider what Westview becomes without the Hex: dilapidated houses and a nearly abandoned downtown. It was on the brink of economic collapse before Wanda got there. And yet, the obvious pain its citizens were in, compounded by Wanda inadvertently forcing them to experience her own, means her cosmetic enhancements came at a terrible cost and further cement her as a villain. Nevertheless, Wanda is also the protagonist and by the grammar of the shows she idolized, she should be able to at least restore Westview to some prosperity as reparation. The fact she cannot is an interesting counter to the world she tried to make for herself. And in removing the Hex, she sacrificed the handful of things which brought her some joy in the weeks since the battle with Thanos.(Photo by Marvel Studios)Of course, trying to weigh that out leads back to the question of authenticity Vision and The Vision confronted. Does the pain she unleashed to create a false reality negate the grief she was in? Whose pain is the pain? That ambiguity, and the haunting foreshadowing of the Scarlet Witch as an extinction-level event, is something we ll have to live with until Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness picks up the thread. But as we were always sympathetic to Wanda s grief, we hope the character finds the help she needs and comes back from the brink. In the meantime, we ll congratulate WandaVision for using the grammar of television and the language of sitcoms to present these ideas to us. Also, we ll thank them for eight weeks of wild theories, endless possibility, and one of Marvel Studios most emotionally resonant stories.Read Also: How WandaVision Recreated the Sitcoms of the Scarlet Witch’s Childhood On an Apple device? Ian McShane is back big time in 2019.The British actor s Starz series American Gods returns in March — no small feat after showrunners Bryan Fuller and Michael Green departed the series, delaying its season 2 premiere. And John Wick: Chapter 3 Parabellum is out in May. HBO s long-awaited Deadwood movie is coming this spring; McShane won a Golden Globe best actor drama award for his part as foul-mouthed Al Swearengen in the Western series. There s also McShane s role in Hellboy, and the jazz biopic Bolden.Rotten Tomatoes spoke to McShane about his numerous projects on Tuesday following the American Gods panel during the Television Critics Association s Winter Press Tour in Los Angeles.First, while the third film in the John Wick series hits theaters in May, Starz is planning a spin-off series called The Continental that would be set at the movies hotel for assassins. Though a vital character at the films Continental hotel, don’t expect to see McShane s Winston on the series. That doesn t mean he won t be involved at all, however.“No, McShane told RT when asked about appearing on the series. But I may give em a voiceover. A series, no. They talked about that.”(Photo by David Lee/©Summit Entertainment/Courtesy Everett Collection)There s also the matter of finding out where Winston ends up at the end of John Wick 3. When it begins, he’s going to be in a bit of trouble for letting John Wick (Keanu Reeves) get away at the end of Chapter 2.“Oh yeah, you know The High Table will be pissed off,” McShane said. “The High Table are very pissed off, and they’re very angry.”American Gods casts McShane as Mr. Wednesday, the ancient Norse god Odin living on Earth and trying to lead his fellow old gods — among them goddess of dawn Easter, Slavic god Czernobog, and Ghanaian trickster god Anansi — into battle against the new gods, including Media, Technical Boy, and Mr. World, the god of globalization. Wednesday regularly plays gods, humans, and other entities off each other.McShane hinted that a similar dynamic exists in the world of John Wick, that we’ve only just begun to see the forces behind the scenes at The Continental, and they could all be coming out to hunt John Wick.“It all shifts around,” McShane said. “Talk about shifting alliances, it’s the same thing.”(Photo by HBO)There s also the matter of HBO s long-gestating Deadwood movie. Fans have been waiting to see Al Swearengen again since the network canceled Deadwood following its third season in 2006. McShane said that the intervening 13 years have not been kind to his character.“Al’s a little diminished from what he was,” McShane teased. This time, because the cast and crew are not hoping for a fourth season, the movie gives the show its long-overdue definitive ending. But, of course, there s always the possibility of the movie s unparalleled success.“It’s a full ending,” McShane said. “I say that, but if it’s a huge success for HBO, they’ll go, ‘Can we get another one? Can we squeeze another one of out of you?’ It’s a two-hour movie so it’s a finite thing.”Rumors of a Deadwood limited series or movie have persisted for more than a decade, so McShane still can’t quite believe he actually filmed one. And while HBO has yet to confirm a premiere date — only the vague promise of spring — McShane might have some intel on that matter.“Now it’s coming out in May,” he said. Pencil that into your calendar, but wait until the network confirms to set it in pen.亚博竞猜APP下载(Photo by Warner Bros. courtesy Everett Collection)There were a handful of forgettable war-related films released in 1999: The General’s Daughter, All The King’s Men, the Robin Williams-starrer Jakob The Liar. And then there was Three Kings (Certified Fresh at 94%), part action comedy, part heist movie, and 20 years later, still holding up as one of the best and most subversive war films ever made.Directed with adrenalized panache by David O. Russell (Silver Linings Playbook, American Hustle), Three Kings followed on the heels of Steven Spielberg’s heroic 1998 WWII epic Saving Private Ryan, which canonized the sacrifices made by the Greatest Generation. But Russell had no such patriotic flag to wave. Like Catch-22, Three Kings satirically probes the insanities of war; like Apocalypse Now, it revels in surreal set pieces and sharp visual juxtapositions; like M*A*S*H, it mixes black humor with moral complexity. Its heroes are reluctant ones, soldiers who start out consumed by their own self-interest until forced by untenable circumstances to take a moral stand.IT HAS A KILLER VISUAL LOOKInspired by color photos of the war that appeared in newspapers at the time, Russell and his cinematographer, Newton Thomas Siegel, devised a saturated, blown-out look for the Iraqi desert (actually Arizona) in the film. They increased the contrast and graininess and bypassed the bleaching stage of the film process, giving the desert landscape a foreboding, surreal look, which set the visual template for other films about contemporary wars that followed. The Iraqi village was designed by production designer Catherine Hardwicke, who served the same role on films like Tombstone and Tank Girl and would go on to direct the first Twilight and Lords Of Dogtown.IT MAKES ASTUTE POLITICAL POINTS WITHOUT BEING PREACHY(Photo by Warner Bros. courtesy Everett Collection)Russell exposes the hypocrisy of American foreign policy in the Middle East and indicts the Bush Administration for its abandonment of anti-Saddam insurgents – whom the U.S. had encouraged to rise up against the Iraqi dictator – all without pedantic speeches or heavy-handed scenes. The soldiers who steal back the Kuwaiti gold from Saddam – George Clooney, Ice Cube, Mark Wahlberg, and Being John Malkovich director Spike Jonze – spend the latter part of the film, at great risk to themselves, helping a group of insurgents reach the Iranian border, foreshadowing the refugee crisis of future wars to come.IT HAS THE MOTHER OF ALL INTERROGATION SCENESWhat’s a good war movie without at least one hard-to-watch interrogation scene? Most of these scenes tend to follow a simple formula: someone, usually a soldier, is captured behind enemy lines and tortured for information. But the scene between Moroccan actor Saïd Taghmaoui as an Iraqi army officer and Mark Wahlberg as the captured American soldier gets up close and personal in a way few of these scenes manage to.While the Iraqi does torture Wahlberg s character with electric shocks, he’s no faceless sadist; our sympathies are engaged when we learn he’s lost his young son and daughter to American bombing raids. But the capper comes when Taghmaoui forces oil down Wahlberg’s throat, a searing indictment on what many felt was the real point of America’s intervention in Kuwait: to protect its oil reserves in the Middle East.IT’S THE FIRST WAR FILM TO SHOW GRAPHICALLY WHAT A BULLET CAN DO TO THE HUMAN BODYRussell was concerned about viewers being anesthetized to gun violence; his answer was to give the audience the uniquely visceral experience of how a bullet traumatizes the human body. In the scene, Clooney lectures his men: What makes any gunshot wound bad, provided you survive the bullet, is something called sepsis. Say a bullet tears into you right now. It creates a cavity of dead tissue, the cavity fills up with bile and bacteria, and you’re f ed. As the soldiers listen, the camera tracks a bullet as it smashes into the body, tearing through flesh and filling the organs with bile. While doing press for the film, Russell grew so irritated with a reporter’s questions that he made up a story about how the bullet scene was done using a real corpse. Needless to say, the studio did not find it funny.IT TRANSFORMED GEORGE CLOONEY’S CAREERIn 1999, Clooney was still playing a doctor on NBC’s hit TV show E.R. After the disappointment of 1997 s Batman Robin (11% on the Tomatometer), he was desperate for meatier roles in prestige projects.  In particular, he wanted the role of Three Kings’ disillusioned Special Forces Major Archie Gate (it didn’t hurt that Warner Bros., who produced Three Kings, also produced E.R.), but his relationship with Russell was volatile from the start. The weather on set in Arizona was hot, and the shoot proved to be chaotic. Clooney would often show up on set only to find that Russell had completely rewritten his scenes. As recounted on Slate.com, the two famously came to blows after Clooney objected to Russell physically manhandling an extra on the set.Nevertheless, the film helped to cement Clooney as a leading man, as he jumped to starring roles in The Perfect Storm and O Brother, Where Art Thou? Late in Three Kings, after Jonze is killed and Wahlberg is wounded by a sniper, he even gets an E.R. moment, placing a flutter valve in Wahlberg’s chest to allow air to escape from a punctured lung.Three Kings opened on October 1, 1999.Like this? rt of carries the spirit of Voldemort, in part, and they have this unity, and I had this idea that Harry and Voldemort are at the top of a school tower, and as they confronted each other Dan would grab Ralph, and actually pull him off this tower, and they would apparate around the school together, and as they apparated around the school together, we d explore this weird visual synthesis that exists between the two of them, and they d eventually tumble down into the courtyard. Read David Yates full interview about the confrontation between Harry and Voldemort.Avengers Assemble in New York from Marvel's the Avengers (2012) 91%Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige: “The moment I realized that this could be an iconic moment, not just for the MCU, but for these kind of films, was on the mix stage. When the effects were final and when Alan Silvestri’s amazing score was coming in, and the timing, and the experience of watching the whole movie up to that point That[ s when] I got chills and I realized Joss had pulled it off. Because once the squibs started going off, you couldn’t see anything. You had to count your steps and kinda go into it. And I remember looking at him and going Uh, OK, this could be a little tricky. And he’s like Eh, OK. And he nailed it first take. So that was pretty cool.”Read Chad Stahelski s full interview about the government lobby moment. I See Dead People  from The Sixth Sense (1999) 86%Actor Haley Joel Osment: “There was an even-more morbid element to that scene that actually ended up getting cut out: When I tell Bruce my secret, [at] the last shot of the scene they pull back from my bed and you look out the window where you can see another entire wing of the hospital and in every window there is a person with some horrible injury or someone who’s gone pale because, you know, being in a hospital is a pretty heavy place for a ghost to linger around in this world. So, you pull back and you see all these people lined up on the other side of the frame.”Read Haley Joel Osment s full interview about the I see dead people moment. The Chest-Waxing Scene from The 40-Year-Old Virgin (2005) 85%Writer-director Judd Apatow: “I basically set up four cameras and we had some basic beats we wanted to hit. We knew that we had to get Steve s real reactions, so we shot it like a documentary. We wrote out tons of curses, because we did plan the main joke to be that he would just curse right into her face. And we also made lists of words that weren t real curses that sounded like curses. That s how we got to Steve screaming ‘Kelly Clarkson!’ Off to the side, Seth Rogen had made this enormous list of curses, and I would just yell them out to Steve, and each time they ripped the hair off of something he would scream out one of the curses.”Read Judd Apatow s full interview about the chest-waxing moment. No Man s Land from Wonder Woman (2017) 93%Director Patty Jenkins: “I think that the biggest reason I was obsessed with [the scene] was really from a character place. From Diana’s point of view, it is: What is the birth of a superhero? Just like Superman pulling his shirt open the first time and revealing the ‘S,’ these are definitive, incredible moments, and so I knew that Wonder Woman needed an incredible moment and because we were doing her origin story, it really needed to be the moment that she made the decision to go from being a younger person who was hopeful and idealistic to one who decides to be a hero despite knowing more. And so in this story, that was what I cared about.”Read Patty Jenkins full interview about the No Man s Land moment.  Santa, here? I know him! from Elf (2003) 85%Actor Will Ferrell: “That kind of exclamation of ‘Santa!’ and screaming it, that was just my articulation of Buddy literally taking that piece of news [that Santa is coming] at face value and [thinking] what would be his literal reaction. A man without a country in this strange land finally getting to see someone he knows really well – it would just be the most jubilant reaction ever. I know that the first couple takes really took people by surprise, that I would go that big with it. And all of that, ‘Santa, I know him,’ all of that playing around we did, that was all improvised there.”Read Will Ferrell and director Jon Favreau s full interviews about the Santa, here? moment.
With a growing sense of awareness in the United States of the prejudices and hate crimes inflicted upon Asians, Asian Americans, and Pacific Islanders, it’s an interesting time for the premiere of The CW’s Kung Fu.A new take on the martial arts franchise often associated with the David Carradine–starring Western from the 1970s, this version focuses on Olivia Liang’s Nicky Shen. A Chinese American college dropout from San Francisco, Nicky ditches the life her parents had planned for her and ends up practicing martial arts in a Shaolin monastery – until tragedy strikes and she ends up back home just when her family might need her the most.(Photo by Kailey Schwerman/The CW)In the series, which premieres April 7 and is created by Lost and Hawaii: Five-0 vet Christina M. Kim, Nicky is seen protecting herself and those closest to her with jabs, strikes, spins and kicks while barely breaking a sweat (and sometimes to the surprise of her siblings; Shannon Dang’s tech-wiz Althea and Jon Prasida’s medical student Ryan).“It definitely conflates my own sense of self confidence,” Liang admitted during a recent phone interview with Rotten Tomatoes.“Especially with the things that are happening in the world right now with Asian hate crimes and violence, I find myself walking on the street and being, like, OK what fight choreography did I learn that I can translate if need be at the drop of a hat right now?” she said.Fight training is a relatively new skill set for Liang. Although she has a background in dance, martial arts was a completely new art form for her when she was cast as Nicky. Training began when she was still busy at her previous job on The CW’s Legacies. That Atlanta-set show’s stunt coordinator, David Morizot, showed her basic moves between takes before she worked with stunt coordinator Sam Ly to prep for the Kung Fu pilot. Then it was an aggressive three-to five-hours-a-day schedule for two weeks where  “they molded me and they whipped me into shape,” she said.(Photo by Dean Buscher/The CW)Although she’s not allowed to do any of the intense wire work lest she get injured and cause a delay in production, she said, “you can maybe expect to see at least 65% me” on screen during the fight scenes and that “I try to do as much as possible because it s also just really fun and really empowering and I feel really cool when I do it.” But she gives credit to her stunt double, Megan Hui, and others in that department “if I ever look cool and badass and powerful during a fight scene.”The show also both fits in with the other programs on The CW and stands out from them. It’s one of the few options on that channel that concentrates on a woman and is the only one with a predominately AAPI cast. And, although Kung Fu is about a woman crimefighter and counts Arrowverse kingpin Greg Berlanti as one of its executive producers, Liang’s lead doesn’t come with either superhero powers (like The Flash or Supergirl) or – depending on the season of Batwoman family connections or the luck of finding the high-tech suit of a lost vigilante.“I think it s pretty cool that Nicky’s just a regular person who has a skill set and wants to use it for good,” Liang said. “She s not a superhero and she s not necessarily wanting to be a hero, but she is very heroic.”(Photo by Kailey Schwerman/The CW)Kung Fu also has the hefty task of demystifying the world of martial arts, an art form that Americans may find alluring and stereotypical when we see it portrayed by people of Asian descent (like in Ang Lee’s Oscar-winning Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and in Bruce Lee’s films) or as agro when portrayed by white men (like in TV series like Cobra Kai, Arrow, or even the original Kung Fu).“The great thing about our show is the diversity all around that s happening,” Liang said, mentioning the Kim-led diverse writers room in particular and that she and other cast members have been reading Charles Yu’s National Book Award-winning Interior Chinatown, which discusses both immigrant Asian stories and TV’s depiction of them.“I think, because we’ve so long been on the receiving end of this voyeuristic [depiction] of ‘the Orient’ and the mysticism of Asian-ness or otherness, we really know how it feels .. to be under that lens. We know what we don’t want,” Liang said.(Photo by Kailey Schwerman/The CW)The show also brings up the question of what is a stereotype and what is part of a culture. In the first episode, Nicky is angry that her mother’s (Tan Kheng Hua s Mei-Li) big dream for her was that her daughter attend Harvard. This could be perceived as trumpeting a tired trope, but wouldn’t most parents want their kids to get good grades and go to a respected university?“The interesting thing about stereotypes, from my perspective, is that sometimes they are true,” Liang said, adding that she had “kind of a Tiger Mom growing up [who] did want me to be a genius” and that “I took Abacus lessons for some reason.”“I think the problem with stereotypes is if that s the only thing we know about that person and that s the only thing that they re defined by,” Liang said, explaining that Mei-Li may come across as a Tiger Mom in the first episode, “but we also get to see her backstory and get to see her care for her kids and where she s coming from.”With Nicky, Liang said, “She was the kid who was pressured to go to Harvard and to be everything that her parents wanted her be [but] we also get to see her break out of that. We get to see her forge her own path, fall in love, fight with her siblings. We see a full life; not just the stereotypes.”Kung Fu premieres at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, April 7 on The CW.On an Apple device? Follow Rotten Tomatoes on Apple News.
ers. The pandemic matters. While we can probably expect another strongly-worded “I told you so” from the National Association of Theatre Owners (NATO) this week, the numbers do not lie. Streaming or not, since the end of June, when F9 opened, only two films have grossed more than 2.5 times its opening weekend: The Boss Baby: Family Business (3.42x), which was also streaming for free on Peacock, and The Forever Purge (3.47x), which was exclusively in theaters. Here is a breakdown of the rest.THEATER EXCLUSIVEF9 (2.43 / 7 weeks)Old (2.27 / 3 weeks)Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins (1.94 / 3 weeks)Escape Room: Tournament of Champions (2.51 / 4 weeks)The Green Knight (1.77 / 2 weeks)Stillwater (1.92 / 2 weeks)DISNEY PREMIER ACCESSBlack Widow (2.16 / 5 weeks)Jungle Cruise (1.86 / 2 weeks)HBO MAX (SINCE GODZILLA VS. KONG)Mortal Kombat (1.81)Those Who Wish Me Dead (2.59)The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It (2.70)In the Heights (2.58)Space Jam: A New Legacy (2.08 / 4 weeks)But let’s not let the HBO Max decision off the hook either. Repeat business seems to be at a stand still until we get a true all-clear on COVID and Delta, and streaming only doubles down on that. So the opening weekend is more crucial than ever before. The Suicide Squad is just the seventh film during this time to start with over million, joining HBO Max compatriots Godzilla vs. Kong and Space Jam: A New Legacy. The former stretched its legs through a still-wide open marketplace while vaccine hope was at its peak; the latter dropped like a stone and may end up with the worst multiple for a family film this year.We could just drop all the variables and statistics and know that in our hearts, Gunn’s film goes nowhere south of million in normal times. And that is as conservative as it gets. The top “R”-rated opening in August is still Straight Outta Compton, with .2 million, so it s hard to even suggest that a high-profile DC film whose almost universally-maligned “PG-13” effort is the highest opening weekend ever in August with 3.68 million wouldn t make  million or more. Not when both Deadpools opened to over 5 million, Joker to over million, and Logan with .4 million. The only thing we know for sure is that this year, in our current circumstances, The Suicide Squad will not be joining the 0 million club and the odds are very much in favor that nothing from the rest of Warner Brothers lineup for 2021 will be invited in either. The Top Ten And Beyond: Jungle Cruise Sailing Towards 0 Million Last week’s no. 1 film is showing some potential to eventually join the 0 million club. Jungle Cruise fell 55% to .7 million this weekend. In this environment that actually constitutes a victory given that it is the lowest drop for a no. 1 film in its second weekend since Spiral fell 47.5% from a meager start of .7 million. That puts Jungle’s 10-day toll at million, which is ahead of Godzilla vs. Kong’s .05 million at 10 days, though with that film’s Wednesday opening it only had four weekend days to accumulate that total compared to Jungle’s six. Nevertheless, it is still a better second weekend than GvK’s .88 million, so we’ll give Jungle Cruise a puncher’s chance of breaking that ceiling.M. Night Shyamalan’s Old fell back just a single spot for the third straight week. It is right in line with The Forever Purge’s third weekend of .1 million. Overall, it is still ahead of that film’s pace by almost million, so look for Old’s final tally to be in the range of million, just getting over Lady in the Water’s total and avoiding being the lowest-grossing film of Shyamalan’s post-Sixth Sense career. Black Widow dropped to fourth place with million, which is the third-best fifth weekend this year behind A Quiet Place Part II (.19 million) and F9 (.82 million). Still, it did pass F9 this week and now certainly has a lock to claim the crown of summer champion, not to mention fairly decent odds to compete for the highest-grossing film of the year, with possibly No Time to Die and Spider-Man: No Way Home as its biggest challengers.(Photo by © A24)Amongst last weekend’s adult entries, Stillwater dropped 45% to .86 million and stands total at million. It looks like Focus Features, which has put every one of its 13 films into theaters since Kajillionaire last September, is going to have its highest-grossing film of the pandemic – but just its second to pass million and one which is unlikely to hit million. The Green Knight is just A24’s third theatrical release during this time and their numbers have actually gone up. From Oscar nominee Minari (.1 million) to Zola (.1 million) and now to David Lowery’s film (the first in the company s history to start in third place), which has earned million so far.On The Vine: A Background Player and the Queen of SoulThings get a little more crowded in theaters next week. Delayed multiple times since last year, audiences can finally see Ryan Reynolds as a video game character trying to escape in Free Guy (which critics are digging). More folks are trying to rob Stephen Lang’s abusive blind guy in Don’t Breathe 2, and Jennifer Hudson takes on the role of Aretha Franklin in the biopic, Respect. All three films will be exclusive to theaters.Full List of Box Office Results: August 6-8, 2021

亚博竞猜APP下载 This week s Ketchup brings you more headlines from the world of film development news, covering new titles like The Bodyguard, Gladiator 2, and Wonka. This WEEK S TOP STORYAPPLE WINS HEATED AUCTION FOR A CLOONEY AND PITT REUNION(Photo by ©Warner Bros. courtesy Everett Collection)Movie stars fake friendships on movie sets all the time, but one franchise in which the stars seemed to genuinely enjoy working together was Steven Soderbergh s Ocean s Eleven (and its sequels), and that included the franchise s three biggest stars, George Clooney, Brad Pitt, and Matt Damon. Over last weekend, the news broke that George Clooney and Brad Pitt were attached to star in an untitled thriller package that became the subject of a heated bidding war amongst such companies as Amazon, Annapurna, Apple, Lionsgate, MGM, Netflix, Sony, Universal, and Warner Bros. When the dust settled, the project was won by Apple Studios, which will reportedly give the film a robust theatrical release in addition to a likely release on Apple TV+ as well. The premise of the thriller is being kept secret, but the director who s attached is Jon Watts, who is coming off his hot streak as the director of all three Spider-Man movies starring Tom Holland. Critics generally loved both Spider-Man: Homecoming (Certified Fresh at 92%) and Spider-Man: Far from Home (Certified Fresh at 90%), and the third film Spider-Man: No Way Home (12/17/2021) suggests some multiverse-shaking changes for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. When the trailer for the latter dropped, it also broke Avengers: Endgame s record for most views in 24 hours, which indicates it ll likely be another hit when it debuts in December.Other Top Headlines1. TONY-WINNING PLAYWRIGHT REVEALS CHANGES FOR THE BODYGUARD REMAKE (Photo by Warner Bros. courtesy Everett Collection)Playwright Matthew Lopez became the first Latino writer to win the Tony Award for Best Play (for The Inheritance) Sunday night, and that was also an opportunity for reporters to find out more information on the high profile film project Lopez is working on right now. It was just two weeks ago that we learned Lopez was now working on the remake of the Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner 1990s classic The Bodyguard, and we now have a better idea of how Lopez is revisiting the premise. Lopez revealed that the singer in his version will be a young Latina performer, rather than the established star that Whitney Houston played in the original. Lopez elaborated, It’s about how her life has changed because she is an overnight sensation. In the 21st century, that means she’s in immediate need of protection. It s not yet known who Warner Bros. might be considering for the role of the singer or the title character.2. RIDLEY SCOTT PROMISES GLADIATOR 2 WILL BE NEXT AFTER HIS NAPOLEON MOVIE (Photo by ©DreamWorks courtesy Everett Collection)Prolific director Ridley Scott turns 84 next month, but he shows no sign of slowing down anytime soon, especially considering that he has two films being released in the next two months: The Last Duel (10/15/2021) and House of Gucci (11/24/2021). Scott is currently preparing to direct Joaquin Phoenix as Napoleon Bonaparte in the historical epic Kitbag for Apple Studios, but he s already making promises about the next film after that. Ridley Scott said this week that I m having [the next] Gladiator written now. So when I ve done Napoleon, Gladiator will be ready to go. If it s okay to spoil a movie that came out over two decades ago, several of the characters in Gladiator didn t survive, so it s unclear who will be featured in the sequel, since there were plenty of gladiators in ancient Rome to pick from. The Napoleon epic Kitbag is expected to be released in 2023, so we might get Gladiator 2 in 2024 or so.3. TIMOTHEE CHALAMET S WONKA PREQUEL ADDS THREE FAMOUS BRITS (Photo by Steve Mack, Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection)Timothée Chalamet s Dune remake is still a few weeks away from release (in the USA anyway), but he is already preparing to work on another ambitious project that revisits a popular character. Chalamet will be the third actor (after Gene Wilder and Johnny Depp) to play the title character in the prequel Wonka, which will be directed by Paul King, director of the Paddington movies, which are both Certified Fresh at 97% and 99%. The Wonka cast has been slowly growing over the past few weeks (including the addition of Jim Carter from Downton Abbey and Keegan-Michael Key), but this week it expanded impressively with the addition of three popular British actors. The new Wonka co-stars are Rowan Atkinson (Mr. Bean), Sally Hawkins (The Shape of Water), and Olivia Colman (The Favourite). Although Wonka has already started production, it sounds like it s going to need several months of post-production work, because Warner Bros. has scheduled it about 18 months away, on March 17, 2023.4. MICHAEL B. JORDAN TO PRODUCE ADAPTATION OF AWARD-WINNING BROKEN EARTH (Photo by JA/Everett Collection)Once they get to a certain level of success, many actors take on the role of producer as well, though not all of them are equally, well, productive. One actor-turned-producer who is keeping quite busy is Black Panther and Creed star Michael B. Jordan, who in just the three years since 2018 already has 12 projects on his IMDb page as producer. The latest one that his production company Outlier Society is taking on is Sony s adaptation of the three-time Hugo Award-winning sci-fi trilogy The Broken Earth by author N.K. Jemisin. The first book in the trilogy, The Fifth Season, introduces a post-apocalyptic future in which humanity is continually faced with devastating weather events. It s not yet known if Jordan also plans to appear in the films.5. THREE NEW CHARACTERS SHED LIGHT ON AQUAMAN AND THE LOST KINGDOM(Photo by ©Warner Bros.)Going into this week, we still didn t know much about the premise of the superhero sequel Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom (12/16/2022), except that Yahya Abdul-Mateen II s Black Manta will be one of the villains. But the addition of three new cast members offers a better idea of where the movie is headed. Indya Moore (Queen Slim) will play Karshon, who in the DC Comics is a Green Lantern villain and a shark endowed with intelligence and telepathic powers. Vincent Regan will play Atlan, an ancient ruler of Atlantis who gave the city its name, and Jani Zhao will play Stingray, who appears to be a new character created just for the film. Put it all together, and it sounds like Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom will feature flashbacks and characters that don t look entirely human.6. INDIGO GIRLS TO GET MAMMA MIA-STYLE MUSICAL GLITTER DOUBT (Photo by Effie Naddel/Everett Collection)They re still more common on stage than on film, but jukebox musical movies are growing in popularity. The subgenre is defined by its use of pop songs rather than original compositions, and very often, those songs are thematically connected, whether by genre or by artist. 2008 s Mamma Mia! (and its sequel), for example, used the songs of the pop group ABBA to tell its story. Now, the songs of the Indigo Girls will be used to similar effect in the LGBTQIA+ summer romance Glitter Doom, starring Alex Diaz and Alan Cammish as the titular characters. Other supporting characters will include Ming-Na Wen (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.), Missi Pyle (Galaxy Quest), and Lea DeLaria (Orange is the New Black), along with cameo appearances by Tig Notaro and the Indigo Girls (Amy Ray and Emily Saliers) themselves.7. TYLER PERRY AND BLUMHOUSE TEAM UP FOR THE FIRST TIME (Photo by Kristin Callahan/Everett Collection)On the creative side, people tend to identify films with directors more than producers, but there are indeed some producers who have established strong reputations. Two such examples are Tyler Perry (who s also a writer, director, and star) and Jason Blum, whose production company Blumhouse is one of today s most successful specialists in the horror and thriller genres. Perry and Blum are now teaming up for the first time on a thriller called Help, to be written and directed by Alan McElroy, whose credits as a writer include Star Trek: Discovery and The Vampire Diaries on television and the first Wrong Turn movie (but not the sequels). The premise of Help is being kept secret for now, but we do know that it s already scheduled to start filming in Atlanta in 2022.8. J.K. SIMMONS TO LURK IN THE WOODS AS EVIL KILLER (Photo by Daniel McFadden/©Sony Pictures Classics)Prolific character actor and Academy Award winner J.K. Simmons has played plenty of tough guys in film and TV (including his neo-Nazi character in HBO s OZ (Fresh at 92%). Simmons said this week that he didn’t want to play any truly scary bad guys when our kids were young, but now that his two children are in college, he has freed himself to unleash his inner villain. With that in mind, it was announced that Simmons will star as a sociopathic killer in the indie thriller The Woods, to be directed by Michelle Schumacher, who co-starred with Simmons in nine episodes of OZ but also directed him in her feature film directorial debut, 2017 s I m Not Here (Rotten at 38%). Simmons co-stars will include Allen Leech (Downton Abbey), Isabelle May, and Fernanda Urrejola, as he plays an evil killer who stalks a teenage girl suffering from anxiety due to a tragic event from her past. 9. MOVE OVER GARFIELD; HEATHCLIFF IS GETTING HIS OWN MOVIE TOO (Photo by Everett Collection)Pop culture is littered with characters that feel thematically similar. This is far from a new phenomenon, and you don t need to look any further than the newspaper funny pages to see the evidence. Garfield might be the most famous orange cat in the comic strips, but there was also Heathcliff, who was actually introduced in 1973, three years before Garfield. Legendary Entertainment, the production company behind recent movies like Godzilla vs Kong and the upcoming Dune remake, has acquired the film and TV rights to Heathcliff, which is now written and drawn by the nephew of the Heathcliff creator, Peter Gallagher. Gallagher will also act as producer alongside Steve Waterman, whose credits as producer include Stuart Little (Fresh at 67%) and the various Alvin and the Chipmunks movies. On an Apple device?
