亚博真人APP采用百度引擎4(Baidu 5)During Awards Season, Rotten Tomatoes editor Jacqueline Coley will be reporting on the big contenders, the most important ceremonies, and surprise shifts in the race towards Oscar gold.If Toronto and Telluride start the awards conversation, the first two big indie awards nominations of the year start to put that chatter into sharper focus – showing which titles are actually going to do more than get people talking. On Friday, November 16, Crazy Rich Asians actress Gemma Chan and Private Life’s Molly Shannon will unveil The Film Independent Spirit Awards 2019 nominees, and later this month, The Gotham Awards will hold their annual ceremony honoring the lifetime achievements of Willem Dafoe, Rachel Weisz, and Paul Greengrass, alongside their category winners. Keep a close eye on the winners. In recent years, indie darlings Moonlight and Spotlight won big at both ceremonies and ended the season with a Best Picture win, beating out bigger-budget commercial frontrunners.  With the Gotham Awards kicking things off later this month and the Independent Spirits holding their ceremony the night before the Oscars, let’s take a closer look at these two indie awards shows that effectively bookend the season and examine how well they signal future Oscar accolades.Gotham Awards(Photo by Roy Rochlin/Getty Images)Established: 1991Nominations Announced: October 18Ceremony: Monday, November 26, 2018Voting Body: Contenders are nominated by a jury of film critics, journalists, festival programmers, and film curators; a separate jury of filmmakers, writers, producers, and film crew members vote on the winner. Both juries are primarily composed of New York or Northeastern-based industry folk.Criteria: Films made with an economy of means, though no specific dollar amount is listed.Comparable Oscar Categories: Best Feature, Best Documentary, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best ScreenplayIn its early years, The Gotham Awards primarily celebrated films created by Northeastern filmmakers or filmed in the area; thus the awards were aptly named ‘Gotham,’ the unofficial pseudonym for New York City. However, in 2004 The Independent Film Project (IFP), the largest and longest-running not-for-profit dedicated to the promotion of independent film, broadened its scope to include the larger filmmaking community, including international films. Announcing nominees in mid-October, The Gothams hammer down the first stakes on the road to next year s Oscars. But with nominations proposed by a jury looking to champion hidden gems, the winners don t always line up with Oscar nominations. Last year, only Jordan Peele’s Get Out earned similar honors at both the Gothams and the Oscars when he took home the prize for Best Adapted Screenplay. Moonlight and Spotlight went on the win Best Picture after winning Best Feature at the Gothams, beating out early front-runners La La Land and The Revenant. On the acting side, Matthew McConaughey and Casey Affleck sprinted off the blocks with Gotham Best Actor wins and crossed the tape with Best Actor Oscars in 2013 and 2016. But since 2013, only Julianne Moore managed to win both a Gotham and an Oscar for her performance in Still Alice. The nomination numbers slightly favor the ladies, with 40% of Gotham Nominees making it to Oscar night, while only 33% of male nominees accomplish the same feat. In the end, the Gothams are a good indication of Oscar potential but not much more than that.Independent Spirit Awards(Photo by Randall Michelson/Getty Images)Established: 1984Nominations Announced: November 16Ceremony: Saturday, February 23, 2019Voting Body: Film Independent MembersCriteria: US-Based film for major Categories. Cost of the completed film must be less than million.Comparable Oscar Categories: Best Feature, Best Director, Best Female Lead. Best Male Lead, Best Supporting Female, Best Supporting Male, Best Screenplay, Best International Film, Best Documentary Feature, Best Cinematography, Best EditingHeld in a tent off the Santa Monica pier on the Saturday before the Oscars, the Independent Spirit Awards are the laid back California cousin to the NYC-based Gothams, or maybe just a boozy, low-budget Oscar pre-party take your pick. Last year, Frances McDormand sported a pajama-styled dress suit, and Timothée Chalamet arrived decked out in an oversized button-down looking like he’d finished a shift at Kwik Trip. Dress code aside, one thing is sure: the Independent Spirit Awards go hand in hand with Oscar gold. Since 2009, every Independent Spirit Best Feature winner has been nominated for Best Picture, with four of the last five Best Feature winners going on to win Best Picture. Since 2010, the acting nominations are on par with the Gothams, with about 30% of the acting nominees also nominated in comparable Oscar categories. Winning an Independent Spirit, however, significantly ups a nom s chances, with a staggering 65% of Indie winners winning on both nights.Still, the awards are known for rewarding performances that don t get much Oscar love: John Hawkes, Molly Shannon, Mya Taylor, Shailene Woodley, Ben Foster, and Idris Elba all won acting awards at the Spirits without earning an Oscar nomination in comparable categories. Taking all this into account on Friday, November 16th should drop several clues to the films that will shape the season. This year, current Best Picture frontrunner A Star Is Born is ineligible at the Indie Spirits, leaving Netflix’s Roma the presumed favorite among Film Independent voters. But word has it Roma will be relegated to only Best International Film, even though it was produced by and financed by Netflix and Participant Media, two US-based production companies. If Roma pulls any nominations and happens to win when the trophies are handed out in February, don t rule it out for a Best Picture win. Like La La Land and The Revenant before it, A Star Is Born may be just that – a star that burned bright but fizzled out come voting time. Or it could burn bright. Who knows – it s not even December. Either way, stay tuned Friday to see who gets a little heat from the Spirit nominations.

For some, a thrilling fight sequence or a series of Michael Bay-style explosions brings joy; for others, a jump scare does it. For others still, a satisfying mystery; for others romance is key. When putting together the below epic list of feel-good movies – a list we think will do movie lovers some good right now – we didn t overthink it. As a staff, we at Rotten Tomatoes asked ourselves a basic question: What are the movies that, without fail, leave us feeling better than we did before we pushed play.A sort of criteria emerged from our responses. Below you ll find movies that lean heavily into nostalgia – titles that evoke that comfy feeling of going to the cinema as a youngster to see films you ll later watch dozens of times on cable (Hook, The Sandlot, Mrs. Doubtfire). You ll also notice a preponderance of hilarious, and often goofy, comedies (Step Brothers, Friday, Spy), and a bit of romance, too (Crazy Rich Asians, When Harry Met Sally). You ll find big names whose decades spent atop marquees have been a kind of comfort over the years to moviegoers (Toms Hanks and Cruise, Whoopi Goldberg, Eddie Murphy). And you ll find the work of newer filmmaking voices that make us thrilled for the future of the medium (Taika Waititi, Olivia Wilde, and the team behind Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse).The 150 titles featured in our guide to Great Feel-Good Movies are filled with laughs and heart, and characters you root for and relate to. In times like these, we think they ll make good company. What s your favorite feel-good movie? Let us know in the comments. Click on each movie s title to find out more, including where to stream, rent, or buy.

(Photo by Disney+/Lucasfilm Ltd.)Despite a seemingly huge cliffhanger in the season 2 premiere, The Mandalorian maneuvered into its tried-and-true episodic format thanks to series creator-writer Jon Favreau and director Peyton Reed, a new member of the show s growing stable of talent behind the camera. And even though its main story may have diverted from the course we expected, it still offers a few things to consider about Din Djarin s (Pedro Pascal) future. Let s take a look at where the Way took him this week. The following contains spoilers about The Mandalorian, season 2, episode 2, “Chapter 10: The Confrontation.” Stop here if you have not watched the episode. The Way Sent the Mandalorian and the Child to Tatooine(Photo by Lucasfilm/Disney+)Tasked with reuniting the Child with his own people, Djarin began a search for other Mandalorian culverts in the galaxy. His assumption: someone in one of the other groups will know more about the mythical order of space wizards the Mandos clashed with thousands of years ago and who Djarin believes to be the Child s kin. On Tatooine, Djarin worked with Cobb Vanth (Timothy Olyphant) to end a Krayt Dragon threat, winning the Mandalorian armor Vanth was using to mete justice on the edge on the Dune Sea. As he rode back to Mos Eisley, a seemingly familiar bounty hunter watched him from a distance.Read more: The Mandalorian Kicks Off Its New Season With a Monster Star Wars Tale — But Questions Remain The Mandalorian Thwarts Criminals and Is Saddled with a New Quest(Photo by Lucasfilm/Disney+)The Mandalorian s ride back to Mos Eisley is interrupted by raiders more interested in his jetpack than anything else; even if they want to abduct the Child at first. Djarin makes quick work of them, but his speeder bike is destroyed. After a slow march back to Mos Eisley, he finds Peli Motto (Amy Sedaris) hustling credits out of aliens at the cantina. She hooks him up with someone who claims to have good intel on a nearby Mando culvert. The contact turns out to be a frog lady (at least, that s what the captions call her) in desperate need of transport to the moon of Trask. There, her husband awaits to fertilize the last eggs of her life cycle. She also claims Djarin will find a culvert there. The catch: because of her eggs fragility, the Razor Crest must travel at sublight speed.Carson Teva (Paul Sun-Hyung Lee) and Trapper Wolf (Dave Filoni), two New Republic X-Wing pilots patrolling the Outer Rim, interrupt their progress. When Djarin sends his transponder signal, the pilots realize his ship is the same one that invaded a prisoner transport some months earlier. The ensuing chase leaves the Razor Crest stranded on an ice planet.(Photo by Lucasfilm/Disney+)Oh, also, the Child has been surreptitiously eating the Frog Lady s eggs.Djarin and the Child must abandon repairs on the ship when their passenger wanders off to the comfort of a natural hot spring in a nearby cave, where the Child s appetite awakens some of the planet s native inhabitants: spider-like creatures reminiscent of the Krykna or, at least, Ralph McQuarrie s original painting that inspired them. Djarin, the Child, and the Frog Lady flee back to the ship, but a true rescue comes thanks to the New Republic pilots, who ultimately let Djarin go because of his actions during that prison break ( Chapter 6: The Prisoner ).Still in need of many repairs, the Razor Crest breaks atmosphere and limps its way to Trask.Latest Mandalorian Episode Introduces New Characters and Places(Photo by Lucasfilm/Disney+)Since Favreau s applies his use of the Star Wars galaxy with great care, we re going to assume setting the first episode of the season on a desert planet and the second on an ice world is intentional. It mirrors the course of the Original Trilogy and would lead us to believe Trask is a forest world if not for Motto referring to it as an estuary moon. Star Wars planets typically feature one biome, so we imagine Trask will have one big landmass and an almost entirely enclosed ocean within it.Then again, there could be forests in that landmass Let s talk about Motto for a moment. There are a few corners of the online discourse that find her way too Earth-like to be accepted into the Star Wars reality. We disagree; she brings a delightful energy to Tatooine as one of its grubby citizens, but also as a roguish type happy to eek out as little advantage as she can. The way she got Djarin to back Dr. Mandible s losing hand (to say nothing of ferrying Frog Lady to Trask) is the sort of unscrupulous whimsy we like to see from time to time — and that s not just because a Scoundrel was our main on Star Wars: The Old Republic. We will admit Sedaris might be too much if Motto was featured weekly throughout the new season, but we think we re getting just the right amount of her at the moment.(Photo by Lucasfilm/Disney+)Meanwhile, the glimpses we re getting of the New Republic remain fascinating. For one thing, it cares about the Outer Rim.As Shmi Skywalker (Pernilla August) observed in Star Wars: Episode I — The Phantom Menace, the Old Republic didn t exist on remote worlds like Tatooine. And though there may not be a presence on the ground — indeed, planets are charged with organizing their own defense and police forces — New Republic patrols of the space lanes around these distant planets is an upgrade from the leave it to the Hutts stance of the pre-Imperial government. Then again, even the Empire mostly left Tatooine to the Hutts. Also, you have to love a return appearance by Star Wars: The Clone Wars supervising director Dave Filoni as Trapper Wolf. We last saw him in the prison break episode, so it is a nice bit of continuity to have him here (see also: Richard Ayoade’s cameo as Zero s vocoder). Also, we d like to welcome Lee to the small band of New Republic officials we ve seen so far; in fact, if the show ever completely abandons its Lone Wolf and Cub format, we d love to see a season in which Djarin works with the Republic in the core systems — not so much to see any old friends (we re just as happy to never see a Skywalker on the series), but to see what a functioning Republic looks like. Also, from what we ve read of former capital world Coruscant in this era, we d love to see Djarin stop there as well.(Photo by Lucasfilm/Disney+)But the Lone Wolf and Cub format also allowed the show to maintain the tension regarding Boba Fett — and that s assuming the person Temuera Morrison played in last week s final moment is the famed bounty hunter. If you want to entertain an alternate theory to his identity, let s assume for a moment he is Captain Rex of Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels fame. The character is still around — despite the clones accelerated aging process — and may have been on the hunt for the Child even before Djarin took up the contract; of course, that would leave us wondering why Rex hasn t made contact. The question mark around Boba Fett made this week s opening moments all the more thrilling, though. Which, again, is a credit to Favreau s writing. He set us up to believe the confrontation would be immediate. Even afterward, the close-ups to the helmet and the jetpack remind us that some answer is forthcoming. This Week s Unanswered Mandalorian Questions(Photo by Axelle/Bauer-Griffin/FilmMagic; 20th Century Fox)The riddle of Boba Fett leads us to ask:Where is Boba Fett? Assuming that was Boba Fett last week, why didn t he catch up to Djarin on the long march back to Mos Eisley and reclaim the armor? He seemed to know its location all along, so why didn t he take it back from Vanth in the first place? Remember, it s only been four or five years since the bounty hunter fought the Skywalker clan, and he s not a follower of the Way. He would, presumably, be fit enough to fight and consider taking his identity back as a matter of pride. A similar story played out in the old Expanded Universe, in fact; albeit with his ship instead of the armor. But as we suggested last week, it is possible his encounter with the Sarlaac changed him in a fundamental way.Is the culvert on Trask? We re genuinely surprised the episode didn t end with the Razor Crest making it to Trask. That means the answer to this question could be more complicated than Djarin anticipates. For one thing, he asked Motto upfront if it is the same culvert from Navarro. That band of Mandos is still in play, even if the Imps cost them a good number of warriors. But considering our rumor-watch includes Katee Sackhoff reprising her Clones Wars and Star Wars Rebels role as Mandalorian Bo-Katan Kryze, she could, conceivably, be part of the culvert on Trask. Although we are presuming a culvert awaits Djarin, it s possible Frog Lady was lying through her gills. The Mandalorian season 2 is now streaming on Disney+. On an Apple device? 7.22.0 6月喜迎Joel Meares for Rotten Tomatoes: It was really interesting watching this film and then having also recently watched When They See Us, Ava DuVernay s piece on Netflix, and seeing both projects focus on post-prison life in a way we don’t often see. Was there something in doing this film that you learned that you didn t know about what happens people leave prison and have to navigate the systems and rules outside?Just how difficult it is in every element and every aspect. It seems like that world is working against you. Brian has a book now called What Set Me Free, and there you ll learn a whole host of things he went through in terms of dealing with a parole officer who was not very kind to him. And him actually trying to make it; it s like they work to put you back in prison. They don t really have a good start, they don t have help; they’re out, but it seems like the prison system is working as hard as it can to get them back in, cutting off any sense of the opportunity at a real life as much as possible. Before we started shooting, I had to wear an ankle monitor, the same one Brian wore, for about a month. Tom Shadyac, the director, asked me if I would be willing to just wear it without taking it off and I only took it off when we got to shooting a scene where I had to take it off. When you wear it and you re so self-conscious, you realize this thing now is part of your identity – you have to shift how you do everything. The fact that you can t go within a certain distance of a park and parks are everywhere you start noticing parks are everywhere. So that means you can t live in certain places, you can t even eat in certain places, you can t be around certain people. It shifts your entire idea of what the world is. People are still in a cage when they re on parole. Just because they re outside, they re not free.So you weren t just wearing it, you were wearing it and abiding by the rules?Yeah, brother, it s not fun. You have to charge that thing at night or else it starts beeping and will wake you up. You have to figure out how to shower with it. You do not wear shorts for anything; you wear thick socks to cover it. It was a real process. I appreciated that Tom asked me to do that because it was something to get into the mindset. It really put me in the state of mind of what it means to be self-conscious in a different way. I just did a month; Brian had to do five years. How much time did you spend with Brian, and what was your biggest take away from your time with him?We met about a month-and-a-half prior to shooting in Memphis. The moment we had a conversation, right off the bat, I started asking him about his whole training regiment, so I could get a trainer, but I was like, Why don t you train me yourself? We started training together in the gym and we were basically together every single day; we were either together physically in the gym or we talked every single day until we got to Memphis. When we were in Memphis we were still together every single day, even on the days off. It was just me and him. We formed a great bond. We re still friends today. I had a chance to meet his little son a few months ago back in New York. He gave me such a great opportunity to really execute my art and show what I can do and be effective in a different way; hopefully more effective towards a progressive conversation about change. So, he s taught me a few things, but he s a great guy, and the very first time we met, that was what it was about for me. Do I like this guy? Do I respect this guy? I asked him if he was still angry and bitter. He said, “Nah, the anger had its time. I let it go. I just want to be happy.” I was like, this man is elevated, so I can respect that, I can learn from that. That’s my dude right there. You ve done this film and Clemency and played a D.A. in City on a Hill. What draws you to these kinds of stories – about prison and issues in the justice system? And why do you think we are seeing a number of prominent stories like this at the moment?I can t answer why they re getting told at the moment outside of just serendipitous timing, because Brian really started trying to pioneer this project back in 2012. I think the first script was written by 2014. We shot this film in 2017, so it s years in the making before finally getting to a place where I think the universe was just like, “Now is the time.” You couldn’t work out the time better between When They See Us and this movie coming out. I think it s the universe saying, We really do have an issue. Let s really focus on the conversations that need to be had, and actions that need to be taken when it comes to this. Nothing really drove me directly to Brian Banks. He came to me and I answered. I kind of leave myself open these days; I m trying to just not control or live in the illusion of control when it comes to what I m doing. If something feels right, I ll hit it and, you know, the Banks audition came across, I believed in the story, I was personally inspired, so I was like, “Please let me be an asset.” And I was lucky enough to book the job.Thumbnail image: Rachel Luna/Getty Images for Film Independent, Universal Pictures, Lions Gate, Twentieth Century Fox Film Corp, Akhirwan Nurhaidir/©Sony Pictures ClassicsBrian Banks is in theaters August 9, 2019.

Binge Guide: 5 Shows to Watch if You Love Bridgerton If you can't get enough of the steamy romance and period trappings of Netflix's latest hit drama, we've got a few suggestions to sweep you off your feet. by RT Staff | February 1, 2021 | Comments
Chernobyl: Miniseries (2019) 96% (HBO)The threat of nuclear annihilation remained a perennial boogeyman for children of the 1980s, so it was particularly terrifying when news of the Chernobyl disaster spread across the world. HBO s Chernobyl harnesses that anxiety to deliver a bone-chilling reprimand of human arrogance, drawing viewers in by telling some of the smaller stories that played out alongside the big, headline-generating one. Series creator, executive producer, and writer Craig Mazin and director Johan Renck won Emmys for their work here, expertly mixing elements of visceral horror and unsettling dread with deep human drama, and the cast is all aces. Long-time character actor Jared Harris turns in some of his finest work as Valery Legasov, the consultant brought in by the Soviet government to investigate the incident. He s the anchor of the narrative, but he s flanked by Stellan Skarsgård and Emily Watson in excellent supporting roles – all three of them were nominated for Emmys – while Paul Ritter is downright loathsome as Anatoly Dyatlov, the chief engineer at the plant whose obstinacy led to the catastrophe. It feels almost disrespectful to call this entertainment, but Chernobyl is some of the most compelling drama HBO has crafted in recent memory. – Ryan Fujitani, Sr. EditorWhere to watch: HBO or HBO Now, FandangoNOW, Amazon, iTunes, VuduCommitment: 5 hours (five-episode miniseries)Mrs. Fletcher: Limited Series (2019) 82% (HBO)Mrs. Fletcher creator Tom Perrotta is one of our generation’s premier miners of suburbia’s dark corners – he wrote the novel Election as well as the screenplay for Little Children. He also knows a thing or two about compelling TV – he EP’d The Leftovers. Here he brings both skills to bear on a story that we’ve seen before – empty nester searching for new meaning when her son leaves college – but never like this. Part of that is due to the series’ incisive and frank treatment of porn and the way in which it has entered the little ticky-tacky homes of American suburbia and smashed open doors and shattered taboos. In Mrs. Fletcher, the titular divorcee rediscovers herself via a number of pornographic genres, while we also see the way a steady diet of hardcore has affected her college-age son’s ability to be intimate. But mostly the series soars thanks to Kathryn Hahn, who is incredible as Eve Fletcher; touchingly lost in her newfound aloneness one moment, giddily seizing control of new opportunities the next. Hahn was another terrible snub for the 2020 Golden Globes. It’s almost a bonus that Perrotta surrounds her with an endearing cast of characters whose stories are as rich and compelling as Mrs Fletcher’s. – Joel Meares, Editor-in-ChiefWhere to Watch: HBO or HBO Now, FandangoNOW, Vudu, Google PlayCommitment: Approx. 3.5 hours (one season)What We Do in the Shadows: Season 1 (2019) 94% (FX)If you haven’t taken a bite out of Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement’s TV adaptation of their 2014 film, you’re in luck! Now’s a great time to binge season 1 of this vampire reality show satire, because season 2 is right around the corner, premiering April 15 on FX. The half-hour comedy stars Matt Berry as Laszlo, Kayvan Novak as Nandor, Natasia Demetriou as Nadja, and Mark Proksch as Colin Robinson – a group of vampire roommates living-dead in Staten Island. Harvey Guillen slays as Lazlo’s human “familiar,” Guillermo. We won’t spoil the 10-episode first season for you, but there are some excellent cameos to look forward to. And you have our word: This is one vampire-TV offering that doesn’t suck. – Debbie Day, Sr. TV EditorWhere to watch: FXNOW, Hulu, FandangoNOW, Vudu, Google Play, AmazonCommitment: Approx. 5 hours (one season)Supernatural 93% (CW)The Winchester Bros. long and winding road is coming to an uncertain close, so what better time to get caught up on the 14 seasons that started it all? For those new to the monster-hunting party: Supernatural follows brothers Dean and Sam Winchester on a grand, ghoul-bashing tour of the United States. From wendigos and chupacabras to fighting the devil himself, there’s no creature Dean and Sam haven’t faced at least once, if not several times, all the while dealing with a very complicated family history that just won’t leave them alone. The deeper you get into Supernatural’s lore the more bonkers it all gets, but with a reliable creature-of-the-week format and undeniable chemistry between stars Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki it’s an easy binge. And with almost two weeks worth of spooky fun, you won’t have ,to worry about running out of story anytime soon. (But be warned, all ye who enter: the CW has halted production on the back half of the show s final season, leaving the series finale in limbo. With any luck, it ll pull a Winchester and find its way to a small screen near you soon enough.) – Haña Lucero-Colin, TV Curation ManagerWhere to watch: Netflix, FandangoNOW, Amazon, Vudu, Google PlayCommitment: Approx. 13 days, 7 hours (14 seasons)Kingdom 96% (Netflix)Set in Korea, about 400 years ago in the Joseon era, the series kicks off with a “sick King, who no one is allowed to see. There is a movement to crown the illegitimate Crown Prince to the throne. In the middle of the political drama, a mysterious plague spreads and forces the Crown Prince on a mission to uncover and stop the disease. Whether or not you’re still watching The Walking Dead, Kingdom is a fresh take on the zombie apocalypse genre. Plus, thanks to Parasite, South Korean content is front and center these days, and if you already love 2016 Korean zombie movie Train to Busan, you’ll get the same shocking, breathless moments in this series. A period piece, Kingdom will subvert your expectations in a lot of ways, not the least of which is the setting. This is not TWD — the zombies run fast, and no one can hide in a mall 400 years in the past. Add to that, amazing special effects and gorgeous cinematography that bring to life a bloody good time. – Eileen Rivera, Sr. Director of Production Where to Watch: NetflixCommitment: 11 hours (two seasons)Medical Police: Season 1 (2020) 92% (Netflix)If you think a satirical sketch comedy series about a team of Children s Hospital doctors in Brazil who try to find a cure for a disease that s rapidly spreading across the globe may not be the best thing to watch right now, I m sorry but you re wrong.  Medical Police is a spoof of procedurals like CSI, 24, and The Blacklist, in addition to being a spin-off of Children s Hospital (2010-2016), which itself is a spoof of medical dramas like ER and Grey s Anatomy. It s like a sketch comedy house of mirrors where your favorite comedians and guest stars are given free rein to be as weird and funny as they want be. – Sara Ataiiyan, Review CuratorWhere to watch: NetflixCommitment: Approx. 5 hours (one season)Elite 97% (Netflix)It’s Gossip Girl meets Big Little Lies — have we got your attention? A standout of Netflix’s international programming, Elite has everything you could want in a soapy noir melodrama: tortured rich teens, murder, chic fashion, sex – all while the youths are studying for those pesky exams. Elite finds nuance in its pulp and explores themes like classism, racism, and LGBTQ issues with a surprising amount of realism and grit. Power is one of the central pillars of this show; how its characters use or misuse it to get what they want creates a lot of highly entertaining moments, like seeing the students concoct a plan to deflect blame for a death at a nightclub. It also boasts a soundtrack that rivals Euphoria’s. A highlight to look for is former Mexican child-star-turned-acclaimed-pop-star Danna Paola’s turn as Lucrecia, daughter to the Mexican ambassador in Spain. Lucrecia is the best diva-villain-with-a-secret-heart-of-gold since Blair Waldorf. Netflix offers a dubbed version, but we highly recommend watching the series in its native Spanish language with English subtitles. Charles Dickens  A Christmas Carol is one of the most-adapted tales in the history of the English language, and Steven Knight, creator of gritty period series Peaky Blinders and Taboo, is the latest talent to have taken on the task.We all know the story: crotchety miser Ebenezer Scrooge has a Christmas Eve night visitation from his dead former partner Jacob Marley, who warns him of three ghosts who will attend him as he walks through visions of Christmases past, present, and future. This new FX presentation, directed by Nick Murphy (The Awakening), stars Guy Pearce as Scrooge and Andy Serkis as a grumpy Ghost of Christmas Past and promises a darker take on the 1843 novella that made a superstar of its author: A Christmas Carol is a spine-tingling immersion into Scrooge s dark night of the soul, the promotional materials promise. It is a darker retelling. There s no question, Serkis told Rotten Tomatoes. It s a unique retelling in that respect because Scrooge in this is not some sort of old miser character. He s actually a tough businessmen who is in denial and doesn t want to really engage with his own moral relativism. We caught up with the stars to get a feel for the new adaptation — and it indeed feels scary. Here are five ways this Christmas Carol one-ups previous efforts.1. This Cool Scrooge Resonates With Modern Audiences(Photo by Kurt Iswarienko/FX)Scrooge is not as crotchety here as in previous interpretations of the character; in fact, the character may resemble more real-life people than ever before. Pearce offered a personal assessment of his character. They really wanted somebody this time who still had been affected in life the way that we know Scrooge has been, but that his demeanor and his presence in the world was more of a businessman, as a leader who is a kind of a cocky, confident, swaggering kind of asshole, basically, Pearce told Rotten Tomatoes. I think it was important for Nick, our director, and for Steven, our writer, to get away from the crotchety old man who exhibits on the surface the pain and damage that he s experienced in his life. And the fact that he s turned away from the world and plays somebody who s actually up front to the world and says, Come on, bring it on. Bring on your questions about who I am and what it is, because I ve got a really good response for you. And kind of like that, be a little bit more affronting and aggressive. And so, in a way, we still get to the point where we drag him through his past, and we make him look at the things he s done to people, and we crack open the soul that is a damaged soul. 2. This Ghost of Christmas Past Plays Dirty(Photo by Robert Viglasky/FX)But his Scrooge will face a harder fight in Knight s version, Pearce confirmed: It s a tougher journey because the Ghost of Christmas Past is a really hard nut to crack. The Ghost of Christmas Past is jaded, the character description offers. He’s been sent to make lost souls repent before, why should Scrooge be any different? He prods and pokes where it hurts, transforming himself into those known to his charge, finding a place of pain, shame and self-knowledge. But can he get Scrooge to recognize himself, and repent? 3. The Ghost of Christmas Present Has a Much More Personal Relationship With Scrooge(Photo by Robert Viglasky/FX)Charlotte Riley appears as the Ghost of Christmas Present, while Jason Flemyng is the Ghost of Christmas Future. Both ghosts are updated here with new twists on the characters. She plays my sister who has died some years before, Pearce said, and she has now come back as the Ghost of Christmas Present. And — particularly after the ruthlessness of Andy Serkis Ghost of Christmas Past, who shape-shifts into all sorts of characters through my past, and he s really tough on me — then she comes in as the Ghost of Christmas Present, and it s my long lost dead sister, so it s so emotional and so touching and painful. And then it s capped off with Jason playing sort of ruthless again, but silent like the silent-killer kind of attitude, as the Ghost of Christmas Future. 4. Steven Knight s Take Is Indeed Chilling(Photo by Robert Viglasky/FX)One of the most unsettling features of the new story is how closely it hews to issues — and personalities — we face today, which is a very intentional choice. Serkis said he knew he was in for something special when he heard Knight was attached. When I heard that there was another version of Christmas Carol being made, I kind of thought, Wow, OK. Again? Another one?' he said. But as soon as I knew that Steven Knight was writing it, I knew that now, This is going to be an interesting take, because I knew this was going to be the beginning of a journey into his exploration of Dickens in other stories as well, which is the case. Knight and the stars had previously talked about stripping down the story, which Serkis expounded on for Rotten Tomatoes. When we say stripping down, it was more about not getting bogged down in the sort of tropes of a costume drama, Victorian drama, and allowing it to live afresh as a really contemporary piece of writing, he said. And therefore, and so, even though you re what you, of course, allowing the visuals, you do that work, you want to feel that the character is alive and very present and not sort of imagining what it might be like to have been alive in the 19th century. You re not doing that. You re actually saying these are people, people are people, and we still have the same issues, problems. We need to unpack the difficulties of the human condition in this, in a very modern way to make this story resonate with a fresh audience. 5. Serkis Costuming Challenge Continues Here Even If He s Not a CG-Enhanced Character(Photo by Robert Viglasky/FX)Serkis, known especially for his CG-enhanced performances like Gollum and Caesar in the Lord of the Rings and Planet of the Apes franchises, faced a different sort of challenge here. [The costume] was so heavy. It was like going from the sublime to the ridiculous. I couldn t possibly have more makeup or costume to bear, but it was great, actually. It was nice to play a character in the flesh, and it was a particularly challenging character, not least because it was like sensory deprivation actually wearing this costume. I had long locks of hair and an additional beard. I had an eye that I couldn t see out of. I had scars all over my face. I had long nails, so once I got into costume, I was able to kind of get into the character and stay there. I had to. To compound his costuming issues, they filmed in summer. It was pretty brutal at times, Serkis said. I just had to at least take the hat off and get the top layer off as much as I could. But — actor problems. A Christmas Carol airs Thursday, December 19 at 7:30 on FX.Like this? Subscribe to our newsletter and get more features, news, and guides in your inbox every week.

Ghcxuf (Photo by DreamWorks)Star Wars and the Marvel Cinematic Universe are currently two of the absolute biggest properties out there, so it might be easy to forget how much of a niche market sci-fi and comic-book fans in general would have represented just 20 years ago. Before San Diego Comic-Con became a huge phenomenon garnering coverage from pretty much every news outlet around, genre fans were often ostracized and mocked by mainstream media. Everything changed on Christmas Day of 1999, though, when we got an adventure-comedy that was not only a love letter to sci-fi shows like Star Trek, but also one of the first movies to embrace fan culture as something positive.Galaxy Quest has a simple premise: what if aliens watched a sci-fi TV show from Earth and, believing it was real, asked the stars of the show for help in defeating an alien general? The film overcame production issues, including a change in directors from Harold Ramis to one who had barely done any feature films – and certainly no sci-fi movies – to become a cult hit that remains beloved decades later. It was even voted as one of the best Star Trek films by fans (higher than Star Trek Into Darkness). For it’s 20th anniversary, let’s walk in the suns of Warvan and explore why the film that got us to never give up and never surrender still endures to this day.It Nails the Fan Convention Atmosphere(Photo by DreamWorks)Back in the ‘90s, pop culture conventions were niche events, not at all like the juggernauts akin to San Diego Comic-Con. When Galaxy Quest begins, we meet a group of washed-up actors from the eponymous fictional sci-fi TV series at one such convention. The vast majority of the fans are dressed up in cheap costumes based on their favorite characters, and they’re being amped up by a moderator who appeared in one episode (played by Sam Rockwell). When the actors finally show up, it’s a sight that will be familiar to anyone who’s ever attended a similar event. The main actor in Galaxy Quest, Jason Nesmith (Tim Allen, arguably at the peak of his career), thinks too highly of himself, arriving late and soaking in all the attention from the fans while overshadowing his former co-workers. He occupies an entire table himself to sign autographs, while the rest of the cast are forced to share a smaller one. Alexander Dane (the late, great Alan Rickman), another actor on the show, has become absolutely fed up with making convention appearances and dealing with fan after fan coming up to him and repeating his famous catchphrase – to be fair, he did play Richard III.Galaxy Quest depicts not only the absurdity and the pettiness of it all, but also the love that goes into attending these fan conventions. It also predicted the rise of these conventions in ways no one could have foreseen back in 1999. The film, clearly inspired by Star Trek and its loyal fanbase, came at a time when these types of events drew just a few thousand fans. Now, similar events have become so big that they now encapsulate the entirety of pop-culture, and the biggest one, the aforementioned San Diego Comic-Con, draws in over 100,000 fans annually, with major studios dropping big announcements and news outlets reporting on them.It s a Legitimately Good Sci-Fi MovieOne of the reasons Galaxy Quest remains as beloved as it is today is that, unlike many parodies and spoofs, it still makes the effort to be a good sci-fi movie in and of itself. After Harold Ramis left the project, a relatively unknown director named Dean Parisot signed on, and he made sure that the film looked better than just a cheap knock-off of old Star Trek episodes, which is what the original plan called for. In the newly released documentary Never Surrender, producer Mark Johnson says that Parisot directed the film as a drama, focusing on the characters and elevating the movie from operating merely as an extended joke. That feeling of legitimacy comes from the fact that the technical aspects of the film make it look as good as most sci-fi movies from the time. Where Spaceballs and other parodies used their lower budget to make fun of the movies they’re parodying via cheaper recreations, Galaxy Quest aims to look as good as  if not better than some of the Star Trek movies themselves. The special effects were created by Industrial Light and Magic, who had plenty of experience with the Star Trek franchise, and production designer Linda DeScenna, who did set decoration for the first Star Trek movie, also did the set decorations for Galaxy Quest.Never Surrender offers the impression that there were some differences of opinion on how “cheesy” the movie should ultimately be, but the end result erred on the side of realism in order to properly sell the drama of the characters. The creature effects were even created by Stan Winston, known for his work on The Thing, Jurassic Park, Aliens and more. Winston and his team meticulously recreated both the cheap effects that would be appropriate for the show-within-the-movie, like the headpiece worn by Alan Rickman’s character, and the look of the “real” aliens, who might feel right at home in the bigger-budget Star Wars or Star Trek movies. What makes Galaxy Quest special is that the movie is more than a parody, it s an homage. It s not funny at the expense of Star Trek and other sci-fi shows, and it doesn’t turn the staples of the genre into dick jokes like Spaceballs does. Instead, the film plays out as commentary, and it s funny because everyone who worked on the movie loved and understood the genre and knew what elements were worth poking a bit of fun at, and what elements needed to be played completely straight. It Pays Respect to Obsessive FansArguably the main reason why Galaxy Quest became such a hit with fans is the way the movie approaches fandom. This is a movie that came out well before the mainstreaming of geek culture and Comic-Con, before Game of Thrones and superheroes became part of the day-to-day conversation. In other words, the nerds and sci-fi fans of 1999 were more accustomed to being portrayed as basement-dwelling, D D-playing social misfits.Galaxy Quest‘s treatment of this niche culture is best represented by Brandon (Justin Long), a trivia-obsessed fan who uses his knowledge of the show to guide Nesmith and his crew through a replica of the spaceship and save their lives. The movie doesn’t ostracize fans or treat their obsessive cataloguing of pointless details as a waste of time. On the contrary, it treats fan obsession as an asset, which was innovative and way ahead of its time. The movie also depicts how fans can at times mistake fiction for reality. We learn that the Thermians, the aliens who have come to ask Nesmith and his fellow actors for help, have based their entire culture around the TV show, which they consider to be historical documents. Their enthusiasm at watching Nesmith step into the bridge is infectious, and they try to emulate the virtues of the characters in the show, while being completely blind to the many, many flaws of the extremely human people behind the costumes. By the end, their enthusiasm even manages to make the actors themselves embrace the heroic values their characters represent. Nesmith has been so immersed in the success his role had afforded him that he had never considered the positive effect it had on others, how he actually inspired them to do good, until the moment he becomes an actual hero – all thanks to some alien fans.It Predicted the Power of Fan Culture(Photo by DreamWorks)After the actors save the Thermians and return to Earth, they are greeted by a wave of enthusiastic fans at the convention, who cheer at the sight of a literal spaceship crashing into the convention center. The ending of the film reveals that Galaxy Quest the TV show subsequently enjoyed a new wave of popularity that resulted in a revival series, thanks to the fans.In this way, Galaxy Quest was again ahead of its time, as it came out before studios and networks realized the power of fans, but predicted that fans would be able to bring a beloved show back from the dead. It came out a mere three years before the Fox series Firefly, which was cancelled in 2003 after just one season and eventually saw a feature film continuation in 2005 after fans campaigned to bring it back.Though only 20 years old, Galaxy Quest feels like the beginning of a new era for nerd culture. It coincided with the release of Star Wars: Episode I and the rise of blogs and sites that generated online debate. It foresaw the release of major geek-friendly film franchises that weren t merely cult favorites but bona fide blockbusters, like X-Men, Spider-Man, Lord of the Rings, and Harry Potter. Fan conventions became gathering places for hundreds of thousands of like-minded individuals to camp out for days on end in order to catch a glimpse of their favorite pop-culture stars or a trailer for the new movie in their favorite franchise. Fans now not only drive the box office, but they manage to revive their favorite franchises much faster than they used to – just look at the near-instant renewal of Brooklyn Nine-Nine.Galaxy Quest may not be widely regarded as a key player in the rise of geek culture and fandom, but it should be; its influence can be seen in everything from the 2009 Star Trek reboot to Marvel s Guardians of the Galaxy movies. If there’s one thing this cult classic has taught us, it is to never give up, and never surrender.Galaxy Quest was released on December 25, 1999. 😈😈

Today s Ketchup brings you another set of headlines from the world of film development news, covering movies with new roles for Richard Madden, Jessica Chastain, Michael Rooker, Elisabeth Moss, and more. This WEEK S TOP STORYMARVEL S YONDU May SNAP HIS TEETH INTO THE SUICIDE SQUAD AS KING SHARK(Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)Ever since Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn signed on to direct Warner Bros. and DC Comics The Suicide Squad, there have been rumblings that at least one of his Marvel stars would join him. For a while, there was word that might be Dave Bautista as Peacemaker, until recent news that the role will likely go to fellow professional wrestler John Cena instead. Today, we learned that James Gunn still might reunite with one of his Guardians stars, with Michael Rooker now in talks to play the monstrous villain, King Shark. If you re a fan of TV s The Flash, you might recall that King Shark has had some pretty cool scenes on that show. The Suicide Squad cast will also include Idris Elba, Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, and Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn. Warner Bros. has scheduled The Suicide Squad for August 6, 2021. Gunn is expected to return to Marvel Studios for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 after he wraps on the DC flick, suggesting a Guardians release date no sooner than 2022.Fresh Developments1. GAME OF THRONES, Bodyguard FAVORITE JOINS MARVEL S THE ETERNALS (Photo by Tony Gonzalez/Everett Collection)We re now within 10 days of the end of HBO s Game of Thrones, so we re in the midst of a wave of new roles for those many actors. The biggest story for a Game of Thrones favorite this week however was for someone whose last episode was nearly six years ago. Richard Madden, who played Robb Stark, the onetime King in the North, is now in talks with Marvel Studios about starring in The Eternals. If he signs on, Madden would be playing Ikaris, who, in the comics, has been a leader of the Eternals in the past. Angelina Jolie is also starring in The Eternals as Sersi (a long-running member of the Avengers in the late 1980s and early 1990s). Kumail Nanjiani (The Big Sick, HBO s Silicon Valley) and South Korea s Ma Dong-Seok are also attached to play unknown characters. There have also been reports that Marvel is looking to cast an openly gay Asian actor, but that role appears to have not yet been cast. The Eternals will be directed by Chloe Zhao (The Rider, Songs My Brothers Taught Me), whose two films to date both have Tomatometer scores above 90%. There is no official release date for The Eternals yet, but if the filming start dates align with the Marvel s put out, it might be November 6, 2020 (after Black Widow, which might come out May 1, 2020).2. DISNEY SCHEDULES NEW STAR WARS MOVIES FOR 2022, 2024, AND 2026 (Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)Every once in a while, a massive story will come out which is actually several all rolled into one. This week, Disney announced dozens of release dates (or changes), including some pretty seismic revelations. Last September, we heard that Disney planned on slowing down the release of their Star Wars franchise, and we now officially know that there will be a three year gap after this December s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Then, starting with December 16, 2022, there will be Star Wars movies every two years; the next two will arrive in theaters on December 20, 2024 and December 18, 2026. What we don t know is what these Star Wars movies actually are. It s known that Rian Johnson (Star Wars: The Last Jedi) has plans for a new Star Wars trilogy. Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss are also developing a trilogy which is rumored to be set in the Old Republic period most seen to date in various video games. (You can check out a breakdown of five places we think the Star Wars franchise can go in the 2020s here.) We think that some of the release date changes are Rotten Ideas, so please continue to that section to read more.3. BLACK PANTHER’s CHADWICK BOSEMAN TO SLASH AGAIN AS SAMURAI YASUKE (Photo by JA/Everett Collection)Chadwick Boseman has starred in a few movies now where he was a first. Boseman played baseball groundbreaker Jackie Robinson in 42, he played Thurgood Marshall (the first African American Supreme Court Justice) in Marshall, and of course, Black Panther was a significant first. This week, Boseman signed on for another first in the historical drama Yasuke, in which he will portray the first African samurai in Japan. The historical Yasuke was a Portuguese retainer of Mozambique heritage who was brought to Japan as a slave in the 16th century, making him the first black man to set foot on Japanese soil, [as] Yasuke’s arrival aroused the interest of Nobunaga, a ruthless warlord seeking to unite the fractured country under his banner. It s not yet known who will be directing Yasuke.4. Jane Campion is Back, with Doctor Strange and a Handmaid in Tow(Photo by ©Apparition/courtesy Everett Collection)Marvel Studios has tapped so many top stars (and helped others become stars) that a bunch of new films feature those names. Acclaimed New Zealand director Jane Campion (The Piano) hasn t directed a feature film in 10 years (2009 s Bright Star), and she is now preparing to direct The Power of the Dog, an adaptation of the 1967 novel by Thomas Savage. For this film, Campion has cast Benedict Cumberbatch (Marvel s Doctor Strange) and Elisabeth Moss of the acclaimed Hulu series The Handmaid s Tale. Like 1994 s Legends of the Fall, The Power of the Dog is a story of ranchers in Montana, with Cumberbatch playing a wealthy Montana rancher who engages in a relentless war against his brother s son from a secret marriage to a local widow (played by Moss). The brother and son characters have yet to be cast.5. IT: CHAPTER TWO STAR JESSICA CHASTAIN TO PUT ON THE EYES OF TAMMY FAYE (Photo by Kerry Hayes/ © EuropaCorp USA /Courtesy Everett Collection)Nearly 20 years before acclaimed celebrity documentaries like Won t You Be My Neighbor? and RBG, one of the most successful early documentaries in that style was 2001 s The Eyes of Tammy Faye, about televangelist Tammy Faye Bakker. Fox Searchlight is preparing to produce a dramatic biopic about Tammy and husband Jim, to also be titled The Eyes of Tammy Faye. Attached so far are Jessica Chastain (IT: Chapter Two, Dark Phoenix) and Andrew Garfield (The Amazing Spider-Man). Director Michael Showalter (The Big Sick) will be working from a screenplay adapted from the documentary.  There s no word yet about which makeup artist will be hired to work on The Eyes of Tammy Faye, but whomever it is might automatically be in the running for a Hair and Makeup Oscar.6. CHRIS HEMSWORTH AND TIFFANY HADDISH TEAMING UP FOR BUDDY COP COMEDY (Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, @ Universal)Chris Hemsworth is proving himself a master at comedic chemistry – witness the splendor of  Lebowski Thor – and a great foil to a strong female co-star (he will be back on screen with Ragnarok co-star Tessa Thompson in Men in Black: International this summer). The latest female star to sign on to test Hemsworth’s on-screen charisma and comedic chops is Tiffany Haddish, whose career has been blowing up ever since 2017 s Girls Trip. Haddish and Hemsworth will costar together in the buddy cop comedy Down Under Cover, with Haddish playing a cop who teams up with an undercover male stripper police detective.#7. Dark Knight Writer David S. Goyer Rebooting HellraiserJoel MearesBack in the early 2000s, Spyglass Entertainment was a prolific production company which provided Disney s Touchstone with many of its hits, including The Count of Monte Cristo, Shanghai Noon, and 1999 s The Sixth Sense. Spyglass is back in business again as an independent company called the Spyglass Media Group and in the market for new franchises. Their first major project was announced this week: a reboot of the prolific horror series Hellraiser, featuring the erotic horrors of Pinhead and his Cenobite collaborators. When Hellraiser came out over 30 years ago in 1987, there was nothing like it, but since then, movies like Saw and Hostel have made the torture porn horror subgenre almost ubiquitous. Hellraiser is poised to make a big return, and the job of adapting Hellraiser for a new generation is going to David S. Goyer, the screenwriter behind comic book adaptations like Blade, The Dark Knight, and Man of Steel, and this year s Terminator: Dark Fate. It s not yet known exactly how Goyer will reboot Hellraiser.Rotten Ideas2. DISNEY S MASSIVE RELEASE DATE DUMP REVEALS VAST CHANGES(Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)Pretty much every week, there are new release dates or changes for upcoming movies, but usually it s only for a handful of films. This week, Disney announced such a massive slate of new dates and changes that it s had sort of a tsunami-like impact on the calendar. Disney recently finalized its acquisition of Fox s film properties, and part of its ongoing plan is to slow Fox releases down to 5-6 films a year (cut in half from 12 in 2018). Many Fox films are therefore being delayed or outright canceled. For example, The New Mutants (the last Fox/Marvel movie before Marvel Studios takes over the X-Men and Fantastic Four) was originally scheduled for 2018, and now it s not scheduled to come out until April 3, 2020. Harrison Ford s Call of the Wild (February 21, 2020) is one of the other films pushed back into 2020, as is the long-in-development YA novel adaptation Artemis Fowl (May 29, 2020), though that has always been a Disney movie. Dora and the Lost City of Gold has already swept in to take over Fowl’s original August 9, 2019, release date. Disney s slate is also significant for what it doesn t have, such as Fox s various Marvel movies, like Gambit (with Channing Tatum attached), and projects like X-Force, X-23, Kitty Pryde, and James Franco s Madrox the Multiple Man.1. AVATAR 2 PUSHED BACK TO 2021 (SEVEN YEARS AFTER ITS ORIGINAL 2014 RELEASE DATE) (Photo by @ 20th Century Fox)Up until this week, it was believed that Avatar 2 would be released next year, on December 18, 2020, following years of delays from its original release date in December 2014. This week, as Disney also revealed an every-two-years rotation of Star Wars movies in 2022, 2024, and 2026, they did the same thing for the upcoming Avatar sequels. The four Avatar sequels (yes, James Cameron is really working on four sequels) are now scheduled for December releases in the odd years: Avatar 2 (December 17, 2021), Avatar 3 (December 22, 2023), Avatar 4 (December 19, 2025), and Avatar 5 (December 17, 2027). Paramount Pictures took quick advantage of the vacuum left by the Avatar 2 move, pushing their own sequel, Coming to America 2, back to December 18, 2020. By doing that, Paramount also made room for the science-fiction drama Infinite, starring Chris Evans, on August 7, 2020. For their own part, Disney also replaced Avatar 2 with their own films, the double feature of Steven Spielberg s West Side Story remake on December 18, 2020, followed by Cruella (the live-action 101 Dalmatians starring Emma Stone), five days later on December 23, 2020. We can expect the next few weeks to have more release date changes from Disney s competitor studios.Like this?
