亚博APP官网入口采用百度引擎1(Baidu 2)Dark Phoenix is finally out in theaters and, well, it isn’t the greatest X-Men movie ever released. It’s currently Rotten at 23% on the Tomatometer  although audiences seemed to appreciate it more than the critics – and a strange epitaph to 20th Century Fox’s 20-year relationship with Marvel’s Merry Mutants. But considering the film is Fox s second attempt to adapt the landmark Dark Phoenix Saga, we can t help but wonder if the story is just too big to be contained in one film. As with X-Men: The Last Stand, it feels like vital pieces were lost and, while the casts of X-Men films are always sprawling, this one was missing a number of key characters. Does the story require a trilogy of its own? The Marvel Cinematic Universe proves audiences will wait a long time for payoffs, but building these ideas and characters in a way that resonates like the comic book series may be asking too much of the X-Men movies. Perhaps television is the best place to tell this story we previously got versions of it on two different X-Men animated series  and considering the way HBO and streaming services have pushed TV into feature quality, here are five reasons why Dark Phoenix is better suited for that format. It Can Build To Proper Payoffs And Endings(Photo by @ Twentieth Century Fox)Despite marketing the film as the end of the series, Dark Phoenix can t help but feel like connective tissue to another chapter. Of course, the same could be said for just about any X-Men project. It s baked into the concept, thanks to writer Chris Claremont, who made Uncanny X-Men the most important Marvel title in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Planning to stay on the book for a very long time, he seeded ideas he wouldn t pay off for years. One could call it soap opera plotting, as he provided enough hooks and payoffs to keep readers engaged while telling the ongoing tales of the X-Men as a whole. But in the case of the overall Phoenix Saga – a story comprising Jean Grey’s death, resurrection, and transformation into the Dark Phoenix – Claremont had an ending in mind. It was ultimately changed for reasons we will discuss later, but in its finished form, it offered a clear endpoint for a story told across nearly four years of comics.Tentpole filmmaking used to be comfortable with definitive endings. The first Matrix, for example, ends at a place that would have served as a satisfying conclusion had the film proven to be unsuccessful at the box office. And though we were promised a Star Wars Sequel Trilogy since 1980, Return of the Jedi is certainly an ending to the story begun in 1976. Nowadays, big movies more closely resemble the Claremont style than ever before, with endings teasing a subsequent hook for another story. In the case of Dark Phoenix, a prestige series would have the time to properly seed ideas like Xavier’s apparent mistake with Jean, the X-Men as celebrities a concept criminally underutilized in the film and one key idea not in the movie we’ll discuss in a moment. With room to breathe, these concepts would have greater weight and emotional resonance than a single two-hour film affords them. And as Claremont proved in the comics, the pace is essential. The Characters Can Be Characters(Photo by © Marvel / © Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation)Despite Jean Grey appearing in films since 2000, what do we know about her? She was Xavier’s star pupil, she has extraordinary telekinetic abilities (with telepathy added at some point), and she has the hots for Wolverine despite dating Cyclops. It s thin characterization when an entire movie rests on her shoulders. And while Sophie Turner does a lot with that rough sketch, it s no accident Dark Phoenix re-frames her story in the context of Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) apparently making a mistake. He is, after all, the character all the films have invested in since X-Men: First Class. That’s not a bad thing, as someone has to anchor these films besides Wolverine. But once you come back to the Dark Phoenix Saga, you need more of an emotional investment in Jean (and Cyclops, for that matter) than X-Men: Apocalypse and Dark Phoenix afforded her (or Scott).A prestige X-Men series focusing on the Dark Phoenix Saga can actually frame the story around Jean and who she is besides Xavier’s greatest student and Cyclops girlfriend. Her struggle with the Phoenix Force would mean something, as viewers would know what would be lost if she let the Phoenix have complete control. In the film, these ideas are there, but rushed or inferred for the most part. And since we’re talking characters, a series also means we get to know Cyclops – a character the films have always shortchanged because he’s not as romantic as Wolverine – Storm, and Nightcrawler beyond their powers. As a result, deaths would also carry more weight, because the characters would genuinely matter to viewers. The Hellfire Club Could Be UtilizedKevin Bacon and January Jones as Sebastian Shaw and Emma Frost in X-Men: First Class (2011) (Photo by Murray Close/20th Century Fox)One set of characters criminally absent from both cinematic versions of the Dark Phoenix story is the Hellfire Club. Created by Claremont and artist John Byrne – though apparently inspired by a 1966 episode of the British spy series The Avengers – they debuted as a social club whose inner circle was made of mutants attempting to control the course of world events. Characters like Sebastian Shaw and Emma Frost (played by Kevin Bacon and January Jones, respectively, in First Class) first appeared as members of the inner circle, who try to take control of a Phoenix-addled Jean Grey.Jean’s flirtation with domination and control is a key element of the story and something definitely missing from Dark Phoenix. Jessica Chastain’s Vuk tries to fill the role of the Hellfire Club, but the change lacks the power it should have because Vuk is more of a cipher than an actual character. Consider the satisfying biblical allusions when Jean is presented with classic, decadent temptations in the Hellfire Club. And while we’re at it, Emma Frost could offer Cyclops a temptation of his own, considering their eventual relationship during one of Jean’s many dormant periods in the comics.Incorporating the Hellfire Club also offers the story a true, seductive evil compared to the poorly realized, grubby D’Bari of Dark Phoenix. It would also give Jean, as a character, the moment to revel in her power that she never really gets in the film, and that key pivot in Jean and the Phoenix s time together is crucial to setting up the story s conclusion.Mutants In Space!(Photo by Twentieth Century Fox Film Corp. / ©Marvel / Everett Collection)Because Marvel Comics featured alien species from nearly the beginning of its superhero universe, the Phoenix Force’s origin as an alien entity needed very little scaffolding. And when she left Earth following her time with the Hellfire Club, her feasting on the D’Bari star also needed little set-up; the alien race was established years earlier in an issue of The Avengers. But because neither of the Fox film cycles set up aliens, the culmination of the Dark Phoenix storyline could not be used.In the comics, the Dark Phoenix returns to Earth after destroying the D Bari home world, and a council made up of the Kree, the Skrulls, and the Shi’ar Empire determine the Phoenix is too dangerous. The Shi’ar arrive on Earth and pronounce a death sentence on Jean, but Xavier convinces the Shi’ar Empress to allow the X-Men to duel her Imperial Guard in an attempt to save Jean, whom Xavier has de-powered back to her original abilities. When Jean and Cyclops prove to be the last X-Men standing, she uses a Kree device to disintegrate her body and, seemingly, disperse the Phoenix Force. It’s a big ending. But without the time to establish the Shi’ar, both Dark Phoenix and The Last Stand eschew that development in favor of smaller ideas. A television show, on the other hand, would have that time. In fact, the scenario becomes more intense if the X-Men are confronted with the reality of what Jean could do as the Phoenix and try to find an ethical outcome with the Shi’ar. It s a moral dilemma completely absent from Dark Phoenix, as the D’Bari survivors led by Vuk never seem too broken up about the billions of dead brethren they left behind on the smoldering wreck of their world.(Photo by Twentieth Century Fox Film Corp. / ©Marvel / Everett Collection)And, really, that moral dilemma is part of what makes the Dark Phoenix Saga so compelling. Its ending was changed when Marvel’s then Editor-in-Chief Jim Shooter learned Jean and the Phoenix would face no real punishment for the D’Bari genocide. The Phoenix Force – meant to be a recurring X-Men villain in the story’s aftermath – was shelved for a time, and Jean was barred from returning until a writer could give Shooter a satisfactory way to absolve her of the crime. It eventually happened, as no one stays dead in the comics, but the implications gave the story a lasting importance across decades of subsequent X-Men comic book storylines. This is the weight Dark Phoenix should have. But without the careful planning of a Marvel Cinematic Universe or the build-up of a television series, the impact will always be lost. At this point, we would favor a television show, as it could give these ideas the chance to grow and give us a live-action X-Men team we genuinely care about as they face their greatest ethical conflict. Until that happens, if it ever should, we still have the comics, which offer the story in its grandest scale.Dark Phoenix is in theaters now.Like this? Alita: Battle Angel (2019) 61% Rating: PG-13, for sequences of sci-fi violence and action, and for some language. It may look colorful and lively, and the main character may seem inviting with her wide, inquisitive eyes. But Alita: Battle Angel is really quite violent and not meant for young viewers. Fans of the manga series that inspired the movie probably won’t be surprised to learn that. And granted, much of the graphic violence happens to cyborgs who bleed blue, but still – they’re imbued with human characteristics, and we’re meant to care about them as such. So when they get stabbed or sliced in half or dismembered entirely, the imagery can be shocking. The visual effects and elaborate action sequences in the film from director Robert Rodriguez and writer-producer James Cameron are really the main reason to see Alita – that, and the game, physical performance from Rosa Salazar as the title character. She’s an abandoned cyborg whom a doctor (Christoph Waltz) brings back to life in a futuristic, post-apocalyptic society. But she can’t remember who she was; she only knows she has formidable warrior instincts and abilities that make her both powerful and a target. Alita also takes part in a Rollerball-type game that’s fast-paced and treacherous. She’s basically in constant peril. Jennifer Connelly, Mahershala Ali, Ed Skrein, and Jackie Earle Haley are among the impressive supporting cast. I didn’t bring my 9-year-old son with me to the Alita screening I attended, and I was glad afterward. It’s a big, mindless spectacle, but it really earns its PG-13 rating. 21. Mary Louise Screams, Sets Internet Alight, in Big Little Lies: Season 2 (2019) 86%Who’s powerful enough to face off against the collective force of Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Laura Dern, Shailene Woodley, and Zoe Kravitz? Meryl Streep, that’s who. Queen Meryl is at the top of her game as the grieving mother of Alexander Skarsgård’s Perry in the second season of the HBO drama, and asserts her power in the premiere with a primal scream that went viral across social media.20. “F k the Police” from Us (2019) 93% (Photo by Claudette Barius / © Universal )The biggest laugh in Jordan Peele’s mind-bending horror hit, Us, comes during one of its most gruesome scenes. Elisabeth Moss’s Kitty is crawling on the ground having been attacked by a doppelgänger of her husband, and – her voice just audible as blood presumably pools in her lungs – she calls out to her Google Home-like device to “call the police.” The device misunderstands her and switches from “Good Vibrations,” which has been playing in the scene, to N.W.A.’s “F k the Police.” Universal Pictures film music president Mike Knobloch told IndieWire that the scene could have gone a different way – the punchline was originally going to be a song by The Police. The movie was tested, though, and audiences responded to the N.W.A. song. “I think it became very clear at a critical point in the process that N.W.A was a much more satisfying choice,” Knobloch told IndieWire.19. Sweet Birthday Baby from Russian Doll: Season 1 (2019) 97%(Photo by Netflix)The first time Natasha Lyonne’s Nadia walked out of her friend’s bathroom during her weeknight birthday party, the peppy piano of Harry Nilsson’s “Gotta Get Up” seemed like a fun retro soundtrack cue. The 20th or the 30th however, and the tune became a little more ominous — as did her pal Maxine’s (Greta Lee) slurred greeting of “sweet birthday babyyyy.” The call became a signature for the show, which was one of Netflix s biggest and most acclaimed hits (Certified Fresh at 96%) of the first half of 2019. 18. Kit Harington Discovers Dany s Fate in Game of Thrones: The Last Watch (2019) 100%(Photo by HBO)Emilia Clarke knew the fate of Daenerys Targaryen when she sat down for the table read of Game of Thrones’ final season, but many of her costars didn’t. Not even her on-screen beau/nephew Kit Harington, whose tearful reaction when he learned what would happen — and how he would be involved — was a rare behind-the-scenes look into the making of season 8, which received a mixed reception from critics.17. Selina sells Gary Out in Veep: Season 7 (2019) 97%(Photo by Colleen Hayes/HBO)For seven seasons, HBO’s savage political satire Veep never let up in its pursuit of breaking our funny bones with vicious one-liners and some of the darkest comedy we’ve seen on American TV. In its final episode, though, it broke our hearts. The moment comes just before Selina Meyer (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) takes the stage to accept the Democratic nomination for president, and, hugging her loyal bagman, Gary (Tony Hale), tells him she couldn’t have done it without him. She’s almost teary, and so are we, because we know what Gary doesn’t: Selina has made him the fall guy for nefarious goings on at the Meyer Foundation; a few minutes later, as she rouses the crowd with talk of sacrifice, we see FBI agents approaching Gary offstage. In an epilogue set 24 years later at Meyers’ funeral, a loyal-to-the-end Gary shows up, armed with lipstick in her favorite shade.16. Michael Marshall Sings San Francisco In The Last Black Man in San Francisco (2019) 92%The Last Black Man in San Francisco, directed by Joe Talbot from a story by Talbot and the film’s star, Jimmie Fails, features some of the year’s most beautiful cinematography. But this tale of gentrification on the Bay also features one of the most incredible music moments, as the film essentially pauses for a rendition of Scott McKenzie’s 1967 “San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Flowers In Your Hair).” The song is given a new, jazzy spin as performed by Michael Marshall (he does the hook/chorus on “I Got 5 On It,” part of another great movie music moment this year) and with tuba courtesy of Norway’s Daniel Herskedal. The song features heavily in the trailer for the film above.15. The Vampire Council Convenes in What We Do in the Shadows: Season 1 (2019) 94%FX’s TV version of the cult vampire movie was always in good hands coming from the film’s co-writer, co-director, and star Jemaine Clement, but things got extra-special when the comedy paid tribute to the vampire genre with a next-level star-studded seventh episode, directed by the film’s other star/co-writer/co-director, Taika Waititi. As Staten Island vampires Nandor, Laszlo, and Nadja prepare to face the all-powerful vampire council and answer for their wrongdoing, prepare yourself for a cameo-fest that will blow your mind.14. WTF Did Goose Just Do?! in Captain Marvel (2019) 79%(Photo by © Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures / © Marvel)Comic book fans might have known what was coming, but most moviegoers checking out Carol Danvers’ origin story were as shocked as Nick Fury when Goose the cat suddenly spewed out a bundle of alien tentacles and swallowed the Tesseract. Turns out Goose is a Flerken, a shape-shifting, egg-laying, tentacle-having species of alien with the capacity to house a pocket dimension inside themselves. Duh! In a movie full of scene-stealers – Lashana Lynch as Maria Rambeau, Ben Mendelsohn as Talos – this feline sidekick stole the whole damn show.13. Whisperers massacre survivors in The Walking Dead: Season 9 (2018) 89%Samantha Morton s Alpha wants the survivors from Alexandria, Hilltop, The Kingdom, and elsewhere to know where her boundaries end, so she mounts the (still jabbering) heads of 10 survivors on pikes and embeds them in the ground to mark the edge of the Whisperers’ territory. R.I.P. Addy, Rodney, Tammy Rose, Highwaymen Ozzy and Alek, DJ, Frankie, and, most shockingly, Henry, Enid, and Tara. The scene is a bloody tableau that Michonne (Danai Gurira), Daryl (Norman Reedus), Henry’s adoptive mom Carol (Melissa McBride), Siddiq (Avi Nash), Yumiko (Eleanor Matsuura), and fans won’t ever forget.12. Elton performs Your Song in Rocketman (2019) 89%(Photo by © Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures / © Marvel)Dexter Fletcher’s Elton John biopic is big on spectacle: the director’s staging of “Saturday Night’s Alright for Fighting” in a pub and carnival and of “Crocodile Rock” at the Troubadour left us with some of the most memorable screen images and sounds of the year. But it’s a quieter Rocketman scene that lingers longest. Sitting in his family’s living room, Elton (Taron Egerton) starts to put music to Bernie Taupin’s lyrics for “Your Song”; as the song takes shape, Taupin (Jamie Bell), as well as Elton’s mother (Bryce Dallas Howard) and grandmother (Gemma Jones) become transfixed. Egerton delivers show-stopping numbers throughout the Certified Fresh film, but this could be the scene they play come Oscar night.11. Andy Is Willing to Go the Distance in Netflix s Fyre (2019) 92% Andy King has seen all of your FYRE Fest memes — and he loves them! pic.twitter.com/mCNgDoHpjW Netflix (@netflix) January 29, 2019In the battle of this January’s Fyre Festival docs, it was Netflix’s Fyre that came out on top according to the Tomatometer, with a Certified Fresh score of 90%. While Hulu’s Fyre Fraud was no slouch at 78% on the Tomatometer, we think one key sequence may have given Netflix’s film the edge – and you know exactly what we’re talking about. With four 18-wheelers’ worth of Evian sitting in Customs, event producer Andy King confesses he agreed to “take one for the team” and perform fellatio on a government official to free the water. “I drank some mouthwash,” he tells us, before getting in his car fully prepared to do his duty for the fast-imploding festival. In the end King didn’t have to bend the knee – he says Customs released the water on the condition they would be paid soon after the festival ended – and things ended very happily for him. King’s story went viral, he became something of a folk hero, and has been fielding offers from networks for his own TV show.10. The Knife Fight in John Wick: Chapter 3 -- Parabellum (2019) 89%(Photo by © Lionsgate)In a franchise characterized by lethal stationery and unpleasant night-outs at the club, what makes a lowly, stabby knife fight stand out? First, it begins with a dash of humor: Keanu Reeves John Wick has been chased into an antiquated New York building, and as he and his assailants pummel each other, they take a second to pause and realize their surroundings. My God, it s full of knives! And then comes the audience wincing as sharp blades of every curve and edge are tossed up and down the hallway, mixed in with some trademark Wickian gun-fu, all shot in steady and crisp camera angles. Then, as Wick emerges victorious, but with one would-be assassin still alive, he hurls an axe in a comically large arc into the guy s skull – just for that last dash of mordant humor. The knife fight captures everything brutal and entertaining about the series.9. The Hot Priest Monologue in Fleabag, Season 2(Photo by Steve Schofield)This moving moment from the series finale from series creator, writer, and star Phoebe Waller-Bridge starts after Jake’s beautiful bassoon piece. The Priest – Andrew Scott, forever known as hot priest hereafter – delivers a speech about love at the wedding of Fleabag’s Dad (Bill Paterson) and godmother (Olivia Colman), starting with “Love is awful!” Claire (Sian Clifford) is alarmed: “There’s something wrong with your Priest.” Fleabag thinks maybe he’s talking about her, but it turns out, it’s a love letter to God — The Priest later dumps her at a bus stop. Check out the full speech: Love is awful. It’s awful. It’s painful. It’s frightening. It makes you doubt yourself, judge yourself, distance yourself from the other people in your life. Makes you selfish. Makes you creepy. Makes you obsessed with your hair. Makes you cruel. Makes you say and do things you never thought you would do. It’s all any of us want, and it’s hell when we get there. So no wonder it’s something we don’t want to do on our own. I was taught if we’re born with love, then life is about choosing the right place to put it. People talk about that a lot: It feeling right. When it feels right, it’s easy. But I’m not sure that’s true. It takes strength to know what’s right. And love isn’t something that weak people do. Being a romantic takes a hell of a lot of hope. I think what they mean is: When you find somebody that you love, it feels like hope. 8. Ducky and Bunny have a Plan in Toy Story 4 (2019) 97%(Photo by © Pixar, © Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)Not to take anything away from Forky or Duke Caboom – both great additions to the Toy Story world, and both with their own fantastic moments in the series fourth film. But for pure scene-stealing skills, we re going all in on plush with Ducky and Bunny, voiced by Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele. As the movie turns into pure heist flick, these two carnival toys kick into comedy high gear, and their one-note suggestions for how to steal a key provide for one of the most gut-busting running gags we ve ever seen in a Pixar film. Definitely stay for the credits. 7. Keanu Makes An Entrance in Always Be My Maybe (2019) 90%In the Year of Keanu Reeves, formerly known as 2019, there was just so much Keanu goodness going around – Duke “Yes I Can-ada!” Caboom; John Wick on a horse; the promise of next year’s Bill and Ted reboot. But perhaps our favorite Keanu moment came in Netflix’s Ali Wong-Randall Park rom-com Always Be My Maybe, in which Reeves makes one of the movies’ great entrances, strutting slow-mo into a fancy San Francisco restaurant, shaking hands and blowing kisses as Awolnation’s synthy Sails blasts on the soundtrack. It was the walk that launched a thousand memes, and Reeves performance as a cocky and surreal version of himself in the film is inspired.6. Barry Fights Feral Martial Arts Guru, Lily, in Barry: Season 2 (2019) 100%(Photo by Aaron Epstein/HBO)Sent to kill Ronny Proxin (Daniel Bernhardt), Bill Hader’s Barry has the misfortune of learning during that job that Ronny is a taekwondo champion. Barry manages to break the guy’s windpipe and appears to kill him – and that s when little Lily (Jessie Giacomazzi), Ronny’s daughter and also a martial arts master, comes home. The fight that ensues is the highlight of an incredible season of the Emmy-winning show. Feral with grief, Lily growls and shows off some supernatural leaping abilities. She finally subdues Barry by stabbing him repeatedly, then runs away. “What are you?” Fuches (an always hilarious Stephen Root) screams into the night when the petite warrior later takes a chunk out of his cheek with her teeth. The episode was directed by Hader.5. Reactor 4 explodes in Chernobyl: Miniseries (2019) 96% (Photo by HBO)The story in HBO s acclaimed miniseries Cherobyl begins in Moscow on April 26, 1988, with the dramatic suicide of enfeebled Valery Legasov, played to perfection by Jared Harris (The Terror). In a recording, Legasov indicts Anatoly Dyatlov (Paul Ritter), the man who ran the room at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant exactly two years earlier when its core exploded, and calls for his death. The explosion resulted in the worst man-made environmental disaster in history and in untold deaths — estimated in the thousands when reduced life expectancy is included. The story then flashes back to Pripyat, Ukrainian SSR, in 1986 and takes viewers directly into the room following the explosion. Dyatlov embodies blind arrogance, as he denies eyewitness accounts that the core has exploded. “You’re confused,” he tells one of his men. “RBMK reactor cores don’t explode.” It turns out that under exactly the right circumstances — one having to do with cost cutting and infuriating incompetence — they do. This scene is where the horror story begins. (Check out our interview with series director Johan Renck.)4. Tony Vanquishes Thanos in Avengers: Endgame (2019) 94%(Photo by © Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures / © Marvel Studios)Avengers: Endgame is chock full of moments that are like emotional kryptonite to Marvel fans (hello, mixed media metaphors!). But you re going to need Doctor Strange doing magic hand jazz to hold back the onslaught of tears most of us felt when Tony Stark snapped his fingers as the Infinity Stones were infused into his Iron Man armor, sending Thanos back to the dust from whence he came, and frying himself in the process. It s a pulverizing moment coming at the end of a very long battle – or the end of a very long movie, or the end of a very long series depending on how you look at it – made all the more devastating with the funeral and reunion that immediately follows it. Or how about the moment preceding the snap, when Stark looks straight into the purple fiend s eyes and proclaims, I am Iron Man ? It s all a whirling carousel of rising intensity and action, and that snap really ties it all together.3. A Trumpet and a Verdict in When They See Us: Season 1 (2019) 97%(Photo by Atsushi Nishijima/Netflix)Ava DuVernay’s When They See Us is a gripping and harrowing journey through the darkest corners of the criminal justice system: from bent investigations and interrogations to heavily weighted legal proceedings to the corruption and horrors of the prison system and finally the way that the label of “prisoner” sticks hard in a post-prison life. The four-part retelling of the eventually overturned rape and assault convictions of the so-called Central Park Five – Kevin Richardson, Antron McCray, Yusef Salaam, Korey Wise, and Raymond Santana – is stacked with moments that shock, anger, and move, but there’s one image that lingers perhaps more than any other (or anything else we’ve seen on TV this year). In the closing moments of episode 2, as the boys are read their guilty verdicts, DuVernay cuts to Richardson (played by Asante Blackk) sitting in the middle of a Harlem street and raising his trumpet to his lips, a pair of handcuffs dangling from his left wrist. Richardson plays a few tortured notes before we cut back to court to see him, wide-eyed in terror and shock, lower his head, closing out the episode.2. Arya Kills the Night King in Game of Thrones: Season 8 (2019) 55%(Photo by HBO)The Stark family’s own Faceless (Wo)Man schools us on what that whole Braavos excursion was for: to wield an ancient Valyrian-steel dagger and kill the Game of Thrones villain many viewers thought was destined to face Jon “Aegon Targaryen, sixth of his name” Snow in his final confrontation. But for every Jon Snow fan whining about how the Night King was his to kill, there’s an Arya Stark fan fist-pumping because the gal has mad skills. Yes, even silently stalking her prey and becoming virtually invisible when the undead masses are focused on their leader as he readies a death blow against the No. 1 target on his hit list, the Three-Eyed Raven. Stealthy assassin Arya would not let her brother go out like that.1. Avengers Assemble! from Avengers: Endgame (2019) 94%(Photo by © Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures / © Marvel Studios / )Think cutting off Avengers assemble mid-line at the end of Age of Ultron was a major blockbuster tease for MCU fans? They d only been waiting since 2012 when the first Avengers movie came out – diehard comic book fans have been anticipating to hear the famous battle cry on the big screen since the 60s. And everybody got what they came for in the fan service fantasia that is Avengers: Endgame. During the climatic battle, as Captain America tightens his shield, standing alone against Thanos and his cosmic hordes, Infinity War s fallen come rushing out of the portals. As the triumphant music swells, the heroes stand in unison, awaiting Cap s command, which comes softly growled, with the impact of destiny fulfilled at last. Premiering during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Ted Lasso became the feel-good sports comedy we didn t know we needed. The series from Jason Sudeikis, Bill Laurence, Brendan Hunt, and Joe Kelly slowly found its way into our hearts, garnering multiple accolades and a Peabody Award along the way.The gist of the program follows U.S. Football Coach Ted Lasso (Sudeikis) as he travels from America to the U.K. to coach a struggling soccer team. Season 1 put underdog team AFC Richmond on competitive ground, even though they faced a loss and were relegated. Now Lasso and his crew — Rebecca (Hannah Waddingham), Coach Beard (Hunt), Keeley Jones (Juno Temple), Higgins (Jeremy Swift), Nathan (Nick Mohammed) — must maintain the team s relevancy in the professional sports world while dealing with personal challenges along the way. With new episodes launching on AppleTV+ on Friday, July 23, and a third season in development, does the show still hit the mark? Here s what critics are saying about Ted Lasso season 2:HOW DOES IT COMPARE TO SEASON 1?(Photo by AppleTV+)The premiere does get off to a bumpy start with a clunky plot point that’s out of character for a normally grounded series, but it leads to the introduction of Season 2’s big addition: sports psychologist Dr. Sharon Fieldstone, played by Sarah Niles (I May Destroy You). She’s brought in to help get the players’ heads on straight, and she quickly lets Ted know she’s not a fan of juvenile horseplay… or cookies. The players love her, but she’s seemingly immune to Ted’s charms — and her arrival triggers a fresh wave of anxiety in the old ball coach.  Dave Nemetz, TVLineLuckily, after a less-than-successful start to the season, Ted Lasso quickly regains its footing, and the writers reveal they haven’t completely forgotten how to make good TV.  Kaitlin Thomas, Paste MagazineIn the opening minutes of the new season’s first episode (“Goodbye Earl”), Ted eloquently espouses on how life and death can make us better people, evoking the heightened dramedy of Lawrence’s Scrubs. The episode also carries a reminder to avoid blanket assumptions as “all people are different people” as well as the insight that “intimacy is leaving yourself open to being attacked.” Pearls of wisdom deployed as easily digestible sitcom bites.  Brandon Katz, ObserverWHAT ARE THE BIG THEMES THIS SEASON? (Photo by Apple TV+)If Season 1 was a fish-out-of-water story about a man who succeeds through kindness and positivity and baking really great biscuits, then Season 2 is all about the health and success of the team and expanding the narrative beyond Ted’s immediate influence on those around him.  Kaitlin Thomas, Paste MagazineHopefully, the addition of stern sports psychologist Dr. Sharon Fieldstone (Sarah Niles) will help correct that balance. Her presence alone is evidence enough that – contrary to how this show often positions him – Lasso doesn’t have the answers to all of life’s questions. In the season premiere, Sharon is deliberately written as distant and enigmatic, which doesn’t give Niles a huge amount of room to play, but the character’s potential is already clear to see.  David Craig, Radio TimesTed Lasso embraces the fact that life is sometimes very hard; it s just also committed to the idea that we can still make it easier for each other.  Liz Shannon Miller, ColliderDOES IS STILL HIT THE FEEL-GOOD MARK?The emotional intelligence of Ted Lasso remains remarkably high. It’s what continues to elevate the series above common feel-good stories, which are often given a pass by audiences to exist as middle-of-the-road creations that opt for simplicity over nuance. But Ted Lasso is a more aspirational entry in this specific lane of storytelling.  Brandon Katz, ObserverSo much of its appeal lies in its essential good-naturedness — that belief that good people model goodness for each other, and that selflessness and community thinking can make everyone feel, work, and live better.  Clint Worthington, ConsequenceThe laughter quotient remains high for me; the more things change, the funnier things get, in large measure because the characters are better defined and the actors have a better handle on what makes their personalities distinctive, and different from everyone else.  Peter Martin, ScreenAnarchyThe show’s success would be meaningless without the eloquent, witty, and refreshing writing, which only grows more powerful as it progresses. In some ways, the new season of Ted Lasso changes right in front of our eyes. Previously a baby, the story is now reaching its full potential, with the characters maturing and learning new things about life.  Zofia Wijaszka, AwardsWatchHOW IS JASON SUDEIKIS PERFORMANCE?(Photo by Apple TV+)Sudeikis slides back into the mustache and button-down/sweater combo of Ted with as much bright-eyed joy and unexpected vulnerability as last season, even as we see season 2 starting to throw up some more roadblocks for him.  Clint Worthington, ConsequenceIn reaching for a criticism of this relentlessly upbeat season so far, it’s the over-reliance on Ted’s folksy witticisms. There’s a conversation early on in the season in which he uses three similes and metaphors back-to-back-back. It’s smirk-worthy when Ted responds to a cocktail invitation by saying the “same thing I’d say to Diane Sawyer if she ever asked me on a date: yes please.” The show has never been about traditional setup-punchline jokes and this personality tic substituted for that humor in Season 1. But after the umpteenth usage in Season 2, it begins to feel a tad cloying. Still, that’s far from a fatal flaw.  Brandon Katz, ObserverNot only does Sudeikis take his performance to new levels in season 2, he ventures into new territory with the character, and the show built around him is better for it.  Rick Marshall, Digital TrendsWHAT ABOUT THE REST OF THE CAST?(Photo by Apple TV+)In particular, Sam Obisanya (Toheeb Jimoh) and Danny Rojas take more central roles in the narrative. Jimoh is a revelation, charming with every smile or grimace. Fernández propels Danny past the one-joke punchline of his original appearance ( football is life! ) and shows superb comedic skills.  Kelly Lawler, USA TodayLike his titular character, executive producer Sudeikis doesn t lead with his ego, and the best material in the new episodes goes to his fellow writer-performer Goldstein. Roy Kent is a blisteringly funny bastard with a fierce heart, and Goldstein deepens his character s emotional core every week — including, if you can believe it, as the key player in a rom-com tribute episode.  Kristen Baldwin, EWHannah Waddingham and Juno Temple continue their strong on-screen chemistry as club owner Rebecca and model-turned-publicist Keeley, who became unlikely besties over the course of season one.  David Craig, Radio TimesThe series has doubled down on what works—Ted’s ability to lead, Rebecca’s (Hannah Waddingham) strength, Keeley’s (Juno Temple) PR acumen, and Nate’s (Nick Mohammed) keen insight into the team—while also finding new and fun ways to explore characters like Roy (Brett Goldstein) and Jamie (Phil Dunster).  Kaitlin Thomas, Paste MagazineANY FINAL THOUGHTS?(Photo by Apple TV+)“Ted Lasso” hasn’t succumbed to any easy temptations; it still embodies its coach in being sweeter than it should be able to get away with and smarter than you’d expect, given its unassuming nature. “Ted Lasso” hasn’t been changed by its success, aside from a few guilt-free indulgences.  Ben Travers, IndiewireThis time out, Lasso comes out of the locker room ready to play from the first whistle. The jokes land correctly from the start, the characters seem as rich or richer than when we last saw them. Happily, Ted Lasso looks poised to dodge any sort of sophomore slump.  Tim Stevens, The SpoolSeason 2 of Ted Lasso loses none of the show’s momentum heading into its next story arc, and builds on the successes of its first season in all the right ways. It continues to be one of the smartest, most entertaining, and most rewarding shows running right now, thanks to a talented cast that remains as invested in the series and its messages as their characters are in the optimistic outlook of the show’s titular coach.  Rick Marshall, Digital TrendsTed Lasso Season 2 is premiering at a very different time, comparatively, but that doesn t make it any less important or valuable or necessary. It s hard to imagine a world where we wouldn t need a show like this.  Liz Shannon Miller, ColliderTed Lasso season 2 premieres on Friday, July 23 on AppleTV+.Thumbnail: Apple TV+

6.22.8 4月喜迎Often in comics, one miniseries or event title leads directly into another comic book series with little or no downtime. And while The Falcon and the Winter Soldier does not intend to pick up any of WandaVision s batons — in fact, it was originally scheduled to bow first — debuting two weeks after that other show s finale offers viewers a little bit of the thrill of picking up the first issue of a follow-up story. That sensation changes as soon as the first episode truly begins and Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) reveals a part of what he s been up to for the last few months: fighting dudes like Batroc (Georges St-Pierre) for the U.S. government. So let s catch up with him, James Buchanan Barnes (Sebastian Stan), and the Marvel Cinematic Universe as a whole as we dive into the first episode of The Falcon and The Winter Soldier.Spoiler alert: The following reveals details of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier episode 1, New World Order. Stop here if you have not watched the episode. The Timing Matters(Photo by Chuck Zlotnick/Marvel Studios)As we go further into Phase 4, the end of Avengers: Endgame becomes an important marker of time. WandaVision takes place mere weeks after the Avengers restored roughly 3 billion people to life. Spider-Man: Far From Home occurs the next summer. Black Widow, as it happens, will apparently occur six years prior to Endgame. And the first Falcon episode establishes that some months have gone by.It appears that distance from everyone coming home will be an important plot point. The economic instability suggested in Wanda s (Elizabeth Olsen) first trip to Westview continues to matter and even seems to be contributing to an as-yet-unspecified political upheaval. To be sure, Sam s difficulty in securing a loan is a mostly separate issue — more on that in a moment — but the tense situation Rhodey (Don Cheadle) and a few other government types keep dancing around seems connected to the sudden (and we assume occasionally fatal) return of everyone who was lost when Thanos first snapped his fingers in Avengers: Infinity War.In terms of those whispered economics, we imagine insurance companies went right to work trying to reclaim any death benefits they paid out in the previous five years. The returned also probably expected to go back to work at jobs that either evaporated or found new hires to fill the vacancies. Of course, there s the individual psychological toll to consider, but the instability people keep telling Sam about is the aggregate of those things and is typically expressed in terms of financial and political unrest. And in this episode, we re only seeing the edges of that picture.Nevertheless, the timing still matters as Far From Home presents a world — or at least certain European cities and New York — more or less recovered. Whatever powder keg the generals at Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) memorial expected to explode in the short term sure hasn t a handful of months later.Or, perhaps, Sam and Bucky were instrumental in preventing it from happening. When Even an Avenger Can t Get a Loan(Photo by Chuck Zlotnick/Marvel Studios )One interesting element of the episode is seeing just how accustomed Sam became to the privileges of being an Avenger. To be fair, he lost them as soon as he and Steve defied the Sokovia Accords in 2017, but his expectation that his status as a world-saving superhero would make his loan application a breeze is a bit naive. Nevertheless, it is an interesting way for Marvel Studios as a whole to broach a topic like systemic racism. Each dimension of the scene is fascinating to examine, in fact. Beyond Sam s seeming overconfidence, you have the loan officer unsure of Sam s identity (ouch) and his inability to approve the loan because of the bank s rules, which are built against people like Sam and his sister, Sarah (Adepero Oduye). Then you have her understanding that this was the only way their visit to the bank could transpire — a reality Sam has seemingly forgotten thanks to years in the service and his time in a much more egalitarian organization. Then there is that question: was he receiving income from Tony (Robert Downey Jr.) during the time he worked out of the Avengers HQ? And is his current government contracting something he can claim on the application? We ll also step back a bit and note the bank appears to be offering no sort of amnesty for those who were Blipped. Their five years without jobs or income stands against them. Although, we imagine the bank bends that rules in certain situations. But no matter the reasons for Sam and Sarah to walk out of there defeated — or however an individual viewer may regard the scene — it indicates a growing maturity for the Marvel method while feeling like a natural extension of the Captain America film series philosophy. Now, it s finally pointed to a contemporary situation.Bucky Got a Haircut, Found a Date, and Can t Deal With His Guilt(Photo by Chuck Zlotnick/Marvel Studios )This might be kind of shallow, but we re very glad to see Bucky finally did away with his grungy Winter Soldier hair. Yes, there s definitely a psychological advantage to doing so — he can look in the mirror and not see the monster who haunts his nightmares— but on a purely aesthetic level, Bucky is a much more handsome man with a closer-cropped do.We imagine it is something his therapist encouraged him to do, but it s also possible he chose to do it all on his own in the hopes of reclaiming some part of the man he was before he went to the war. The visual similarity to the dashing lad who showed Jenna Coleman around that science expo in Captain American: The First Avenger is striking. But there is also the sharp contrast of this shattered old man hidden just under Bucky s relatively youthful appearance.Although, we ll admit, it is easier to see that 106-year-old man when he and Yori (Ken Takemoto) go to lunch. It is interesting that these scenes (and his therapy session before them) are the first time we ve really seen Bucky try to cope with everything. Sure, he had that period in Wakanda, but note the way that s minimized in this episode. Those handful of scenes in Black Panther and Infinity War are not about a solider and conscripted killer processing 70 years of trauma. And, really, they couldn t be. Now, though, both we and Bucky have the chance to explore it.(Photo by Marvel Studios)Which makes the date Yori gets for him and his guilt-induced nightmare all the more fascinating. In regards to the former, it make for a fascinating contrast with the cocksure kid in The First Avenger. He absolutely fumbles at every turn and she carries that date until he walks out. But, really, Bucky s in no place to date. He has to finish making amends. At the very least, it would resolve his nightmare. But telling Yori the truth may be the hardest thing he will have to do to complete the task. Sure, Yori may think he wants to know that truth, but what will happen when he finds out this man he s befriended is his son s killer? Bucky has a real ease with him — to the point where the first scene at Izzy s plays as though Yori knows Bucky s real identity — and to lose that bond would be a real setback even if the truth is, ultimately, more important. It s a different sort of jeopardy for the Winter Soldier to experience, but it reflects the sort of show Falcon wants to be. We just hope Bucky gets some sport of peace by the time we get to the end of it.The Portents of Trouble(Photo by Marvel Studios)Curiously, though, the first episode resists the temptation to feature Helmut Zemo (Daniel Brühl) or reveal any aspects of his plan. Although, it s pretty easy to imagine the Flag Smashers as a nascent Masters of Evil. That group, formed by Zemo s father in early issues of The Avengers comic book, will never use that name in the MCU. But it will be interesting to see if The Falcon and the Winter Soldier attempts to employ one of their better known lineups under a different moniker. As it happens, Flag-Smasher is a singular villain in the pages of Marvel Comics and Erin Kellyman briefly appears in the episode as a female version of that character.Of course, because we re assuming a lot this week, we imagine the Flag Smashers are tied to Zemo. But what if they re not? Their aims may be there own while he stays true to his plans as a lone operative. To a certain extent, Zemo is the most successful MCU villain. He tore the Avengers in half, and although they did reform, they are no longer the imperial force he saw when Sokovia fell. But considering the views we ve heard him espouse in trailers, moving his brilliance to ending superheroes entirely could lead to a number of broken costumed folk. Then there s that counterfeit Captain America (Wyatt Russell). Fans of the comics will recognize U.S. Agent on the spot, but we ll hold off on examining him and his comic book counterpart until next week when, presumably, we ll know more about his status in the MCU and what he does to inspire Sam s desire to retake the shield. But for all these uncertainties, at least Sam and Bucky will have allies in the coming fight thanks to people like Sharon Carter (Emily VanCamp) and First Lieutenant Joaquin Torres (Danny Ramirez), a kid in the army who may have a fascinating destiny as the series wears on.The Falcon and the Winter Soldier premieres new episodes on Fridays on Disney+.

Chris Evans took a break from his Marvel superhero duties in 2013 to star in Bong Joon-ho s sci-fi movie Snowpiercer. Based on the 1982 French graphic novel Le Transperceneige, the story followed a high-speed, non-stop bullet train filled with the final remnants of the human race as a second Ice Age turned the planet into an unlivable, post-climate change wasteland. The inhabitants on-board the locomotive represent a sampling of a society that was all but wiped out. The overcrowded back-end of the train is where the underprivileged exist, forced to follow the various orders handed down by militia, while they eat gelatinous blocks of protein for every meal. Contrasting this gritty despair is that of the passengers residing in the front of the train. Here, it s like a high-class vacation every day, where the elite are pampered with all sorts of perks like sushi, pedicures, and lavish nighttime parties.Bong s film was widely celebrated, so it wasn t too surprising when it was announced two years later that a Snowpiercer TV series was in development. A pilot was ordered in 2016, and TNT ordered the series in 2018.It s been four years since the news hit, though. During that time, the project has been hit with a flurry of setbacks. Behind-the-scenes creative disputes and the shuffling of the project — it was moved from TNT to TBS, and then back again — has kept the series stuck in development hell. After all this time, it is looking like the small-screen adaptation of this futuristic dystopian tale is finally on a hopeful trajectory. So let s get into the nitty-gritty and explore everything we know about the upcoming Snowpiercer TV series.A STELLAR CAST IS ON BOARD(Photo by Monica Burns/Turner)For such a high-concept TV series, one would expect a collection of top-notch actors to come along for the ride, and the ensemble brought together for the TNT series is pretty impressive. After 19 years, Academy Award-winner Jennifer Connelly (Alita: Battle Angel) returns to television — anyone remember the short-lived procedural, The $treet? — to play first-class passenger and head of hospitality Melanie Cavill. Tony Award–winner Daveed Diggs, who is best known for his roles in the musical Hamilton and his feature writing debut Blindspotting, plays former police detective Layton Well, a man who lives in squalor in the back of the train.Other actors featured in the show s cast include Mickey Sumner (American Made), Tony Award-winner Lena Hall (Hedwig and the Angry Inch), Annalise Basso (Slender Man), Steven Ogg (The Walking Dead), and Timothy V. Murphy (Sons of Anarchy).EXPECT MORE CLASS STRUGGLES, SOCIAL POLITICS, AND SOME EPIC WORLD-BUILDING(Photo by TNT)In the new series, the constantly-moving, self-sustaining train that is known to its inhabitants as the Rattling Ark will still be there. But while we re getting the futuristic visuals of this post-apocalyptic version of Noah s Ark — along with the similar themes of class, race, and social politics featured in the graphic novel and movie — the mechanics of the Snowpiercer world will be expanded. As a fan of the film and reading the scripts, it broadens the world exponentially. And that s one of the advantages of TV: you have time, series star Diggs previously told IGN. So the politics that are hinted at in the film are explored in much more depth, and the mechanism of the train [is explored further] — just the little things that create a world, world specificity. During a panel at the 2017 Television Critics Association press tour, TNT boss Kevin Reilly teased a central mystery that would be the throughline in season 1, saying it would focus on characters stuck together in an intense environment in a game of survival. Diggs further touched on the class commentary featured in the series at the program s NYCC panel.“Anyone who’s from a marginalized community knows there’s a kind of togetherness that comes out of necessity, and a feeling of family and lack of lying from having to band together,” Diggs said. “So there are some good things, but no amenities. It’s pretty bleak; it’s hard to raise children with no resources. They’re dealing with truly extreme circumstances, so the idea that there’s something to fight for is pretty intense.”A SHOWRUNNER SHAKE-UP SLOWED EVERYTHING DOWN (Photo by Michael Kovac/Getty Images)A year after TNT ordered Snowpiercer to series, Josh Friedman (War of the Worlds) was brought on to run the show. Just weeks later, after production officially began, Friedman was replaced by Orphan Black co-creator Graeme Manson (pictu

But once it does, the series will blow the roof off of its more contained plot to reintroduce the Titans as a team and explore more of its past, even as newer members join the reformed group.Dick Grayson/Nightwing (Brenton Thwaites), Rachel Roth/Raven (Teagan Croft), Koriand r/Starfire (Anna Diop), Gar Logan/Beast Boy (Ryan Potter

This Week s Ketchup brings you more headlines from the world of film development news, covering such titles as Captain Marvel 2, Cyrano, John Wick 5, and Disney s Pinocchio. This WEEK S TOP STORYKEANU REEVES TO FILM JOHN WICK 5 BACK-TO-BACK WITH JOHN WICK 4(Photo by David Lee/©Summit Entertainment)Staging any major film production is a costly affair, so for decades, when a studio knows they re going to make more than one movie anyway, they will sometimes produce movies back to back, which basically means two or more movies are produced at the same time, using the same cast, crew, etc. The most famous example of back-to-back production was probably Peter Jackson s Lord of the Rings trilogy, but other examples include Keanu Reeves two Matrix sequels, the two Back to the Future sequels, and Quentin Tarantino s two Kill Bill films. Lionsgate obviously has something of a cash cow in their John Wick franchise, so it s not surprising that this week, the studio announced the greenlighting of John Wick 5, which will be filmed back-to-back with John Wick 4. Lionsgate had originally scheduled John Wick 4 for release on May 21, 2021, but the COVID-19 pandemic pushed that film s production back, so the release was pushed back a year to May 27, 2022. John Wick 5 does not yet have a release date. In related news, director Chad Stahelski (who will be directing the two John Wick sequels) and screenwriter Derek Kolstad (who has written or co-written all of the John Wick movies) are also now signed to adapt an English-language remake of the 2010 South Korean action thriller The Man from Nowhere, whose plot incidentally bears some resemblance to the first John Wick.Other Top Headlines1. CANDYMAN DIRECTOR NIA DACOSTA TAPPED FOR CAPTAIN MARVEL 2(Photo by Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection)This story is best started with a little bit of recent history. In 2018, director Gina Prince-Bythewood was getting ready to direct the Marvel Comics movie Silver Black (about Silver Sable and Black Cat) for Sony Pictures for what would have been their 2019 release after Venom, but then the studio flinched and pulled Silver Black from their calendar, and Prince-Bythewood directed The Old Guard (Certified Fresh at 80%) for Netflix instead. Also in 2018, Selma director Ava DuVernay signed with Warner Bros. to direct the DC Comics property The New Gods, but two years later, we still don t know when that project will start production. That means that before this week, neither Marvel nor DC had yet had a major superhero movie directed by an African American woman, but it may be Marvel Studios that gets there first. Nia DaCosta (Little Woods, Certified Fresh at 95%), who directed the upcoming Candyman reboot, has signed with Marvel Studios to direct their sequel Captain Marvel 2 (7/8/2022), starring Brie Larson. The premise of Captain Marvel 2 is not yet known, but one possible story could involve Monica Rambeau, who in the comics was the first woman to be called Captain Marvel. Monica Rambeau was depicted as a young girl in the 1990s in the first Captain Marvel movie, but the upcoming Disney+ series WandaVision will introduce Teyonah Parris as the adult version of the character. Other possibilities include the MCU introduction of the New Avengers, and also a continuation of the Kree/Skrull war from the first Captain Marvel. There are seven other Marvel Cinematic Universe movies scheduled before Captain Marvel 2: Black Widow (11/6/2020), The Eternals (2/12/2021), Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (5/7/2021), Tom Holland s third Spider-Man (12/17/2021), Thor: Love and Thunder (2/11/2022), Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (3/25/2022), and Black Panther II (5/6/2022).2. LIVE-ACTION MULAN TO DEBUT ON DISNEY+ FOR A PREMIUM FEE (Photo by ©Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)As studios and theater chains alike struggle with the financial realities of the COVID-19 pandemic, Walt Disney Pictures arguably made the biggest move of the year by announcing that their epic live-action remake of Mulan (originally scheduled for March 9th) will debut in the United States on September 4, 2020 on Disney+ for a price of .99. That price is more than some of this year s other VOD debuts (like Trolls World Tour for a .99 rental), but the difference is that Mulan will not have a rental window of 24 or 48 hours, but will instead remain on Disney+ accounts as long as the subscription remains active. Marvel fans were quick to demand a similar release for Black Widow (11/6/2020), but Disney CEO Bob Chapek was quick to promise that the Mulan offer is a one-off that will not apply to Black Widow (though the pandemic has repeatedly had a way this year of changing plans and circumstances). Disney s decision to effectively pull Mulan from theatrical release in most theaters in the US has also had a quick reaction from the theatrical distribution industry. The Mulan news also came in the same week that Disney+ announced that they had met their five year goal of over 60 million subscribers in just eight months. The other, other related news, Lionsgate announced this week that they will also be releasing the Janelle Monáe horror film Antebellum (originally scheduled for 4/24/2020) on PVOD streaming on September 18, 2020.3. BRADLEY COOPER IN TALKS FOR PAUL THOMAS ANDERSON S 1970S TEEN DRAMA(Photo by John Baer/Rogue Pictures)Many film directors are influenced throughout their career by the period in which they were born, and Paul Thomas Anderson (born in 1970) is no different. His first major success, Boogie Nights (Certified Fresh at 93%) was mostly set in the 1970s, Inherent Vice was entirely set then, and the films of the 1970s have had an influence over most of his work, starting with 1996 s Hard Eight. Anderson has also worked with some of Hollywood s biggest stars, including Mark Wahlberg (Boogie Nights), Tom Cruise (Magnolia), Daniel Day Lewis (There Will Be Blood), and Joaquin Phoenix (Inherent Vice), and this week, he added another luminary to that list. Bradley Cooper is now in talks with MGM to star in Paul Thomas Anderson s next untitled project, which is described as a coming-of-age drama about a child actor set in the San Fernando Valley (also the setting of Boogie Nights) in the 1970s, though it s not yet known what role Cooper will be playing. Cooper s other upcoming film is Guillermo del Toro s remake of 1947 s Nightmare Alley (Fresh at 100%).4. PADDINGTON 2 DIRECTOR RECRUITS RYAN REYNOLDS FOR MONSTER MOVIE EVERYDAY PARENTING TIPS (Photo by ©20th Century Studios)One of the more disappointing stories in 2018 was the reporting that director Paul King, who directed both Paddington (Certified Fresh at 97%) and Paddington 2 (Certified Fresh at 100%) likely will not be returning for a third installment. Instead, King is preparing to direct a family comedy called Everyday Parenting Tips set during the Great Monster Uprising, based on a short story in The New Yorker, which you can read right here. Universal Pictures has put together a package for Everyday Parenting Tips that includes Ryan Reynolds attached to play one of the titular parents, with Paul King directing from a screenplay by the short story s author, Simon Rich, who also wrote the short story that inspired this week s Seth Rogen comedy An American Pickle. Bringing to mind Pixar s Monsters Inc, the story is based on a father s advice to his kid about what to do if a monster lurks under their bed, and then shows what happens when such Lovecraftian beasties as Gorgog the Annihilator [and] Ctharga the Eater of Souls actually do show up.5. PETER DINKLAGE WILL HAVE A NOSE THAT KNOWS THE CYRANO MUSICAL (Photo by HBO)When George R.R. Martin s A Song of Ice and Fire novels were adapted for HBO as the popular series Game of Thrones, one of the many details that were changed involves the face of Tyrion Lannister, as played by Peter Dinklage. Specifically, it s Tyrion Lannister s nose, which for much of the story in the novels doesn t even exist, while Peter Dinklage s version instead got away with n nothing but a nasty scar across his cheek, presumably so HBO viewers wouldn t be disgusted by one of their favorite characters having a huge hole in the middle of his face. In this week s news, Dinklage is fully going the opposite direction, as he is now attached to star in an MGM musical called Cyrano based on the classic 1897 play Cyrano de Bergerac by Edmond Rostand, which has previously been adapted as a film a few different times, including one in 1950 starring Jose Ferrer and one in 1990 starring Gerard Depardieu. Peter Dinklage also starred as Cyrano de Bergerac in a 2018 stage production, and Hayley Bennett, who co-starred opposite Dinklage as Roxanne, will also reprise that role in this musical version. Cyrano will be directed by Joe Wright, who recently earned Gary Oldman a Best Actor Oscar for his performance as Winston Churchill in Darkest Hour, and whose next film is the upcoming The Woman in the Window (which will debut on Netflix), starring Amy Adams. Ben Mendelsohn and Brian Tyree Henry will also co-star in Cyrano.6. TOM HANKS TO REUNITE WITH ROBERT ZEMECKIS FOR DISNEY S PINOCCHIO (Photo by Everett Collection)As Walt Disney Pictures proceeds to adapt the bulk of their classic animated canon as live action remakes, one of the biggies that still hasn t happened yet is 1940 s Pinocchio (Certified Fresh at 100%), which was Disney s second feature film after Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Disney has gotten close in the past few years, with a few different filmmakers attached, but it appears this week that they may have finally found the winning combination. Tom Hanks has remained in talks to co-star as Gepetto, and the new director now being eyed for the job is Robert Zemeckis, himself a frequent collaborator with Tom Hanks. The pair first worked together in Forrest Gump, which was followed a few films later by both Cast Away and The Polar Express. Zemeckis next film, still awaiting release during the COVID-19 pandemic, is his remake of Roald Dahl s The Witches, featuring Anne Hathaway, Octavia Spencer, and Chris Rock.7. JAMES WAN REVVING UP A KNIGHT RIDER REBOOT (Photo by ©Universal TV courtesy Everett Collection)In between directing and producing the first several Saw movies and directing The Conjuring 2 and Aquaman, James Wan also directed the 2014 car heist sequel Furious 7 (Certified Fresh at 82%). Wan is now looking to add another movie featuring, no doubt, some crazy automobile handling, as his Atomic Monster production company is on board bringing back the classic 1982-1986 NBC TV show Knight Rider. David Hasselhoff starred in Knight Rider as Michael Knight, an ex-cop recruited to pilot an A.I.-powered super car called K.I.T.T. as they travel across the United States solving various crimes. This is far from the first time that a Knight Rider movie has been put into development, which dates at least as far back as the 2000s. Former video game writer TJ Fixman is now adapting the Knight Rider screenplay, which will reportedly be set in the present day.8. WHITNEY HOUSTON BIOPIC I WANNA DANCE WITH SOMEBODY LIKELY FOR LATE 2022 (Photo by Suzie Gibbons/Getty Images)Following the 2018 box office success of the Queen movie Bohemian Rhapsody, Hollywood has been stepping up its various plans for musical biopics, with both Respect (about Aretha Franklin) and Baz Luhrmann s Elvis Presley project now due out by late 2021 (thanks, pandemic). One of the projects we ve been hearing the most about is I Wanna Dance With Somebody, chronicling the life of Whitney Houston. This week, Sony Pictures came on board the project, with director Stella Meghie (The Photograph) now attached. Sony reportedly hopes to start production in time for a release around Thanksgiving, 2022. In the meantime, of course, Meghie and Sony will have to find the singer and/or actress who will be able to reasonably approximate Houston s singing talent.9. JENNIFER GREY S NEW DIRTY DANCING MOVIE OFFICIALLY CONFIRMED (Photo by Vestron Pictures courtesy Everett Collection)One of the stories in The Weekly Ketchup just a few weeks ago involved what at the time was just this side of a rumor. What was known was that Jennifer Grey, who probably remains best known for starring in Dirty Dancing (just above playing Ferris Bueller s sister), was rumored to be producing and starring in a new Dirty Dancing movie, possibly set in the 1990s. The setting is not directly confirmed in this week s news, but we can now report that Lionsgate has indeed confirmed that they are developing a new Dirty Dancing movie in which Jennifer Grey will star and executive produce. The major new element to be added to the story this week is that the film, whatever it actually is, will be directed by Jonathan Levine, a frequent Seth Rogen collaborator whose credits include 50/50 (Certified Fresh at 93%), Warm Bodies (Certified Fresh at 81%), and Long Shot (Certified Fresh at 81%). It s not yet known if Levine s involvement might suggest Rogen could join Jennifer Grey as one of the new Dirty Dancing stars. Is it okay to put Seth Rogen in the corner?

This Week s Ketchup brings you more headlines from the world of film development news, covering such titles as Star Trek, Swan Lake, and TRON: Ares. This WEEK S TOP STORYJARED LETO TO STAR IN TRON: ARES(Photo by Derek Storm/Everett Collection)It s now been ten years since the release of the long-in-development sequel TRON: Legacy (Rotten at 51%), which was perceived by some as a box office disappointment, despite actually earning over 0 million worldwide. That sequel came about 28 years after the first TRON, but it looks like the gap between 2 and 3 will be a lot shorter. That s because Disney is moving ahead with a third TRON movie, which will be directed by Garth Davis (Lion, Mary Magdalene). Original TRON star Jeff Bridges returned for TRON: Legacy, along with newcomer Garrett Hedlund, but it appears that the star of this third TRON movie will be Jared Leto (though it s also possible others will return as well). Although plenty of what Disney makes these days is for Disney+, it sounds like this new TRON is indeed planned for a theatrical release (presuming the pandemic ends soon). We also learned this week, via Jared Leto s Twitter, that the title will be TRON: Ares, which is a reference to the Greek god of war  maybe this is the name of Jared Leto s character, or maybe it s a God of War or Assassin s Creed-style game that is the new film s in-game setting. In related news, Jared Leto also confirmed on his Instagram this week that he is attached to star in an upcoming movie as famous pop art superstar Andy Warhol, although it s unclear what movie that might be (an Andy Warhol biopic was announced in 2016, but not much has been heard of it since).Other Top Headlines1. ELISABETH MOSS AND BLUMHOUSE REUNITE FOR MRS. MARCH (Photo by Mark Rogers/©Universal Pictures)Most of 2020 is completely borked when it comes to box office numbers because of the COVID-19 pandemic, but one of the year s (relative) successes happened just before theaters shut down. Universal Pictures and Blumhouse Productions released their reimagining of the classic monster movie The Invisible Man (Certified Fresh at 91%), starring Elisabeth Moss, on February 28, earning 0 million worldwide (a number impacted by the shutdowns in March) before pivoting to a premium VOD release. Elisabeth Moss and her Love and Squalor Pictures production company are partnering again with Blumhouse on a psychological thriller called Mrs. March, in which Moss will also star. Mrs. March will be an adaptation of an upcoming novel by Virginia Feito about an a polished Upper East Side housewife who unravels when she begins to suspect the detestable protagonist of her husband’s latest bestselling novel is based on her.
